what is a good, cheap, camera security system? (1 camera)?

coryw68122

I would like an outdoor single camera security system that can detect motion and begin recording. It should be able to store the video onto a video tape or my computer or something. I need it so that if my car or something has been broken into in my driveway or parked on the street, I will have it on video for the police.

If there is some system that has a light to be triggered with the video that would be good as well.

I am 16 so I don't have alot of money to spend, but my windshield was broken last night for no apparent reason, and I feel helpless in this situation, and I can't afford to continually replace the windshield if it is broken again.

Answer
There are plenty of external cameras that can record onto a DVR, or your computer. However, I think it would need to be running perpetually. Motion detector cameras work fine inside, where it will automatically begin when someone walks past. In this case, you would only set it to run when no one is home. Outside, a leaf, a bird, anything can trigger your motion detector. It would have to run all of the time. You could choose not to run it during the day. Run it at night and delete the video the next day (for storage purposes) if nothing happened.

However, you need to check into your local laws. Cameras are not allowed to invade other people's privacy. I would guess that videotaping the street would not be ok.

Watching security cameras on phone?

help in ny

I am able to watch my cameras from my phone on my home network but as soon as I leave they stop working. What might the problem be? My router and modem are both from time warner cable. Thank you

Answer
When you view your camera footage through your home network, your viewing software has no problems connecting to your camera since they both share IP addresses in the same subnet. Viewing your home security camera over the Internet usually requires that you enable this service in your camera's software, and likely registering with a cam viewing website service. Your security camera software would connect with this external service, and you would view your camera's footage through this site. You need to check your owner's manual or contact the manufacturer directly for exact instructions. If you post the exact make and model of your camera, someone may be able to assist further.

The remotely viewable security camera system at my business requires that I enter the ip address for access. Since I installed a wireless router to my modem, the ip address won't let me view video surveillance. Going to "What is my ip address" gives me information that is not relavent to the DVR.

Answer
You can try clicking start then run which would be the bottom right of the start menu and then type cmd in the command prompt type: ipconfig/all and that would display your ip address which is usually the first one that comes up. I hope that helps, if not the IT suggestion would work to. To find out the external ip address which is usually assigned by the ISP you can trying typing the "nslookup" command in the command prompt as the one above. I think that command gives the external IP.

Home security camera surveillance-how much does a basic set up cost?

Lost of crime in my neighbor and interested in home camera surveillance. Is it expensive and is it worth it?

Answer
You can purchase a variety of different systems, ranging from a few hundred dollars to a few thousand. You probably don't need the most expensive systems (unless your house is huge). A good option would be to place external security cameras in areas that a thief would most likely pass through before he entered your home. You can then attach the security cameras to a DVR so that they only record when there is activity.

However, I think its important to point out that while security cameras are great, they are only one (optional) component of home security. Your first goal should be a home security system. You can purchase these online and install them yourself. They are the same models as you would receive from ADT or Brinks, but at a fraction of the cost, since you do the actual installation (which is not that difficult). The site below is a good resource for home security systems and camera systems. Good luck.

How do I find out which ports are open on my network?

I am trying to use port forwarding to view security cameras over the internet. My camera system, using DHCP, has an IP address of 192.168.0.100. The data is set to come out of port 1026. The camera system is plugged into a hub with an IP address of 192.168.0.1 (set statically). That hub is, in turn, plugged into a DSL modem (which can also work as a Wireless Hub/DHCP server) with the internal address of 192.168.0.2 and an external address of 71.38.68.47. Internally, I can see all devices on the network whether I am plugged into the hub or have linked to the wireless modem. I have set port forwarding on the DSL modem to forward 192.168.0.100 port 1026 for both TCP and UDP protocols. It seems like I have done everything right. I have set-up a similar arrangement in the past with success. But currently, I cannot call the WAN IP address of the modem : port number of the cameras and get the picture. Maybe it is in how the modem and wired hup are linked. Appreciate any help.

Answer
On the *nix box in question type:
netstat -anp | grep LISTEN

and it'll show you all the open ports.

From another box use the nmap program (find on Yahoo! search) to scan for open ports on your boxes.
