What's the best way to set up a home exterior security camera system?

bobseditsu

I want to put up a camera (with night vision) on the front of my house, pointed at the road to record nighttime activities.

I want to record the video onto my computer.

I have several questions:

1. What's an effective and cheap way to do this?

2. What kind of camera should I look for? I'm thinking possibly using a standard Logitech webcam. Good idea?

3. What software do I use to receive the video & record it?

Thanks in advance.

Answer
Effective... get a decent quality video camera. Cheap, try using a webcam (quality of picture leaves much to be desired).

Best suggestion is to talk to a local electronics store. They will know how to set it up and best hardware to use.

Logitech webcam no good at handling moving pictures. Frame rates way too slow.

You might also want to look for issues of Canadian Security Magazine. Always good suggestions in there for home & business security at semi-affordable prices.

When you get the cam, it will supply you with a very basic vid record software. Try going to google ask looking up video recording software...

Using hand held camcorders for home security...?

Nydine

I am wondering if it is possible to use a hand held camcorder for a home security camera.

Would it be possible to link it up so the footage is recorded live on the computer?

If so...how would you go about doing it?

Answer
My friend uses a handicam but it runs continuously. I bought a simple Logitech web cam & point it out the window over my front door. The camera has a motion sensor & the included software is easy to set up so video is only recorded to your hard drive when something is actually happening. This makes for some great office pranks, too!

garage door with camera?

Kelly L

i need to see when my husband gets home as he is opening the garage door

Answer
so you need a surveillance camera right? one of those cheap cctv like cameras you could hook in to your computer is logitech's security cam. another one is from linksys.

they both have sensors which triggers recording when detected a motion. this can be set on its settings. you can also time the recording as well.

you can also view the camera even when you're halfway around the world thru the computer via the internet.

i'm planning to get one of the logitech but not anytime soon.

Which security camera is better for the money?

Logitech alert 750e or Loftek Nexus 543? Both can be found on Amazon. I need an outdoor camera with night-vision for the home. Eventually I will probably need to install 3-4 camera but will start with one before spending more money. Or is there a better, inexpensive camera system for outside the home? I live in a relatively good neighborhood with some occasional mischief from neighborhood kids.

http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Outdoor-Master-Security-System/dp/B003X26LXW/ref=pd_cp_p_3
http://www.amazon.com/Loftek-Nexus-543-Waterproof-conversion/dp/B004Y8TO8I/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1310251093&sr=1-2

Answer
Both cameras have a CMOS image sensor which is the cheapest image sensor out there and provides the worst quality of video among security cameras. The images show in the amazon product description are smaller versions to hide how horrible these cameras are. I have used these and they are total junk. The ip camera also has the same poor quality, possible even worse. You are better getting a CCD type wireless camera. Do your search for that on Google. Once company that has some good ones is Avalonix. If you can run a wire then pick up yourself a $300-400 4 camera system with CCD cameras that will provide better quality.

Looking for some type of (inconspicuous) camera to place in my home, that I can watch remotely via my PC while I'm at work. Must also record video so I can catch a thief red handed. Suggestions please?

Answer
Logitech Wi-Life Security Camera's fits all your criteria. Also, easy to install.

Easy to install and operate security camera?

We want to purchase a security camera for our backyard. Is there a camera we can install ourselves and connect it to our computer? We would like to be able to access the camera while traveling. Thanks.

Answer
There are a few different ones out there.

To buy at a retail store you can get Logitech security cameras. Easy to use and set up.

If you are looking for something wireless you can check out Panasonic or Linksys cameras for home use.

Any of those should give you remote access as well.

are there any wireless security cameras?

Q. I was thinking of getting some security cameras for my home and was wondering if there were any wireless ones available. I live in an apartment complex so I can't really drill holes and run cables outside. So I want something that I can just screw into the wall outside. Do you have any recommendations?

Answer
Linksys, D-Link, Logitech and many other brands do offer wireless security camera.

What is home plug and play technology?

best home security camera logitech on ... is no longer available continue shopping at logitech logitech harmony
best home security camera logitech image

All Smiles

I am looking to install a security system in my small business.
I have looked at a few models there are a few that say they have --"home plug and play technology".
-What is home plug and play technology ?
-Also, what do they mean by it sends encrypted video on existing wiring?
-What do you recommend for someone who is not a techie but needs a small basic but good surveillance system?
(I was looking at the Logitech survelliance clock / spy camera from J and R store).

Answer
It may refer to HomePNA which allows you to send data/video over the existing phone/coax lines (see http://www.homepna.org/en/index.asp)

If you are not a techie, I recommend hiring a professional security installer.

Is there a webcam software that works with any webcam no trials?

So I Can Use To Take Videos To Take Pictures And Use For MSN Messenger

Answer
Fwink is a free and open source webcam application for Windows. It takes still images from your camera at timed intervals and puts them on your web site with FTP. You can add effects like text messages, time stamps and an overlay image.

Fwink does not make live video calls. For that, you may want to try Windows Live Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, Skype, etc.

You can superimpose a logo, or any image you want, on top of your webcam image. The following image formats are supported: JPEG, GIF (transparency is supported), PNG (transparency and alpha are supported), BMP, TIFF and WMF.

You can trigger your camera with the ATI Remote Wonder. Instructions for configuring this plug-in are provided with Fwink.

Are there security cameras that i could watch online?

Matthew

I have two dogs that stay in the backyard while i'm at work. I was wondering if there are security cameras that i could set up in the backyard and watch online. Are there any with sound too? I just want to be able to check up on them periodically through out the day make sure they are ok and not barking up a storm and not have to go home. Any suggestions?

Answer
Yes definitely!

Logitech and Linksys sell cameras that are easy to set up with your network so that you can access them from anywhere. They offer consumer grade products. They have software that you can install as well for recording and other additional features.

For a more professional product you can look at Axis cameras. They have many different types but are going to be a bit more expensive than the Logitech or Linksys products.

Hope that helps. Let me know if you have further questions.

Peter
