Good home security cameras?

Q. I live overseas and want to be able to check on my house in the United States from my house overseas. Are there any cameras that are motion activated that i can setup and it will record the video and send it to me or somehow allow me to view it from overseas?

You may want to consider ADT's Pulse feature. It's a combination mobile access/home automation package that includes a security camera option. Also, ADT recently added a motion sensor activation feature for surveillance camera systems. The remote access technology should work just fine with your smartphone or tablet.

I'm wanting to install a home security camera/DVR system. Good info seems hard to come by. I am temped to try the x10 wireless, (easiest looking solution), and also I do have one location that I would like to include, (outside building), that has AC power, but I can not get a wired (video) connection to . Does anyone have a recommendation between the x10 systems and the bundled systems, (First Security etc, Sams Club), type hard wired systems. Is there a good up to date reference book about this ? I have an attic and cellar, although it's difficult at my age to do much, (wiring/crawling), in the confined attic space. Does anyone have an opinion about image quality/distance transmission of the x10 system ? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. THANK-YOU in advance for your help !!

You didn't say how many cameras you want to install, however there are always issues with wireless cameras such as, lost signals, ghosting and most of all someone getting your signal and seeing what you are seeing.

A really great system is the Wilife system which records directly to your PC with the included software. Set up is simple and the cost is really low. All you need to do is the following: 1) Load the software (PC Only) 2) Plug the USB receiver into the wall and the USB cable into your computer and 3) Just plug the cameras into any electrical outlet.

The video is streamed along the ELECTRICAL lines (not wireless) directly to the USB receiver and onto your computer and the default is motion detection so the system records only when the cameras sense activity. This system gives you the ability to set up 1-6 cameras so after you purchase the "Starter Kit" which comes with one camera of your choice you only need to buy additional cameras.

- If you mean hook up to a PC monitor it says it has a vga port that supports up to 1280 * 1024 resolution. The DVR is already a "Network DVR" means that you could connect it on an existing LAN in your home or office and with a proper configuration you can access the device on a desktop or laptop anywhere inside your own local area network. You'll only need the internet if you want your device to be "port forwarded" on your router meaning access your device outside your home &Office LAN through internet on another location (e.g. on a mall internet cafe).

- There are analog cctv cameras that you could connect its cable directly on a A/V RCA connector on the tv. When the cctv is powered up(usually 12v) it will display its video feed directly to the tv and the tv will display it. This setting will not record anything thus rather just display live feed from the cam.
-The router is only optional if you want to connect your dvr on your existing LAN without it your cctv system will just work fine.

what exactly is a video input in reference to a home security camera ?

I am looking to buy a home monitoring system and I found some but they mentioned hooking up the cable to any video input so what are my options ? I am looking to do this myself so I dont want to hire a company or an electrician to install these for me .

Any source of video is "video output".
Any video monitor or video recorder can have a "video input".

The security camera will provide video out. In order for you to see that video, the camcorder needs to be connected to a video input. This could be a monitor or Digital Video Recorder (DVR).

If the camera's video output is connected to the DVR's video input, then the DVR's video output must be connected to the monitor's video input.

When you look at the connectors, they should be marked.

This is not much different than any other video you may already have. The cable box, satellite dish, DVD player or VHS tape deck is the video source and has a video output that connects to the television's video input...

The link you gave us if for a small, low-end, night vision camera. The cable attached to the camera will have three plugs.
One for power. An AC adapter is included with the camera.
One for audio. This will be a RCA, male, jack - it could be black, red or white - color does not matter but it will NOT be yellow.
One for video. This will be a yellow, male, RCA jack.

We don't know which TV you are using so we do not know if it has any available audio or video inputs.

If you want to record the video (and audio), you would plug the camera's AV-outputs into a recorder's AV-inputs, then connect the recorder's AV-outputs to a TV's AV-inputs...

If you want it to be directly on a computer network (IP-based), and there is no base station (but yout wireless router needs to be working propertly), then an IP network camera is appropriate - and you see what the camera sees by connecting to it using a web browser on your computer...

In either case, for no- or low-light applications, the camera needs to see in the dark using infrared LEDs which come on when it gets dark enough.

Also, keep in mind that "wireless" is ONLY the video connection. The camera still needs a wire - for power. Some - not all - also have a small mic for picking up audio, too.

I am looking for an home security camera sytem that I could link with my tv on it's own channel.

Any suggestions?
Trying to stay below $400, I could do any wiring myself. I live in South Florida so it gets to be around 90 degrees on average. Just a standard resolution in color. Night vision would be a big plus but not needed. If it could be directed to the video input on a receiver that could work also. Would want it to store recordings.

Analog, composite video? There are lots.

On its own channel? Some RF modulators can be expensive, especially if you want to select the channel. Easier if you just use one of the other video inputs that are not in use.

What is your budget?
What resolution are you looking for?
Will the video need to be recorded and stored? If yes, what surveillance DVR are you looking at?
Only one camera?
Is night vision required? If yes, how far does the camera need to see in darkness?
Does the camera need to be outdoor rated?
Does it snow where you live? If yes, you may need a housing with a heater unit.
Does it get REALLY hot where you live? If yes, you might need a housing with a cooling system.
Is the video signal to be wired or wireless?
Is there power available where you plan to install the camera?
Is the camera going to stay in one position or is pan/tilt/zoom control required?

You have not provided enough information for anyone to provide you a good recommendation.

How do I hook up an IP wireless security camera via a mobile broadband hotspot device?

I want to add security video cameras to an area that does not have an internet cable connection. There are wireless IP-based cameras that let you view them remotely. The devices broadcast to a wireless router so you can view the camera over a browser. The problem with a broadband hotspot is that it would be broadcasting the camera 24x7. That'd output too much data to the hotspot. I need a way to hookup a remote camera to a broadband hotspot that doesn't use data until I actually go to the page to look at what the camera's seeing.

Kevy I don't understand the stream vs. non-stream answer. I think you're saying that the IP cameras send a signal 24x7 regardless of whether I connect to that signal.

For the SAN server, I think that's a DVR in the video surveillance parlance. The good thing about a DVR is that we can see what happened in the past. The bad thing about a DVR is that we can't view it remotely.

Remote real time viewing would be best because the motion detector has triggered the police twice in two weeks. No one was obviously in the house either time. It would have been great to remotely view the camera to see what triggered the motion detector. A DVR solution is the next best thing. Its a real time streaming software that does it and only streams which you connect to the HTTP server of your System...

It wont stream (use bits/data) unless you connect to it... you know until you go to the page to view it.

You can have it record to a SAN server... so you have all the data saved... and real time it when you connect...

It will only use data when you connect to it.

Yes while its on its streaming/viewing locally and these bits are the one used by the speed of your router... when you connect to it through the internet (remote connection) your using internet data the speed what your ISP give you.

Basically you only use internet data if you connect to it remotely.

To use the internet... bits from end must travel to bits on the other end... if not internet is not being used... So yes ip cameras are activated connected to a server, but until you remotely connect to it no internet data is used. If you was in your home viewing them... still no internet data is used if your use the Private IP of the cameras... if you use the Public IP of the camera (your WAN IP) data will be used even from your local home.

Like a webpage from a server... its up and running 24/7... no data will transfer unless some goes to their computer and types www.mywebsite.com and connects to my server for my web page...

If i was in the location of my webserver and connect using the private ip of 192.168.1.16 the page still loads and works as if im connecting remotely but no internet data will be used... but since your not locally at your location and in a remote location you must use the internet to view my website... and because of port forward and DNS... DNS says www.mywebserver.com is at the Public IP address of 209.28.93.12... when you connect to it port forwarding says port 80 is located on the 192.168.1.16 and connects you...

That's how remote (internet) connections works.
