security camera - glare from the window from the nightvision/IR?

romantikni

Hi, i have a security camera that has night vision / IR lights, it is pointed out the window. I have a glare from the IR on the window. During daylight the picture quality is clear , but as soon as it goes nighttime i can't see out the window because of the glare.

So my question is - how can i stop the glare? so i can use the nightvision out the window.

Answer
The problem is the same as that with normal light. During the day it is hard to see inside houses because the light source is reflect back off the glass. However it is easy to see out of the house because the light source is outside. At night it is easy to see into a house with the lights on, but hard to see out. Again, the light will reflect off the glass on the side of the light source.

To solve your issue, you need to block the IR source inside the window and provide an IR source outside the window. The camera itself can stay inside.

I have a security camera pointed out my window. It has IR lights for night vision, but there is window glare.?

Jay

During the daytime, the image quality is great, but nighttime viewing is impossible since the reflection from the night-vision IR lights reflect off the window the camera is pointed out of. Any suggestions as to how I can coat the small portion of window to block the reflection while allowing the camera to see through it?

Answer
Depending on the camera angle, you could get some nast glare.

Is there an outdoor rated trip wire that would remain silent outdoors but alert me indoors?

MattLives

For instance, say I have this trip wire set up outside my house and something activates it. Ideally I would like the "subject" which activated it to remain unaware of my knowledge of their presence. Kind of like those car alarms that make your key fob vibrate or beep while remaining silent outdoors. Also, said trip wire would have to be outdoor rated. Rain/impact/cold proof.

I really don't know how to go about finding such an item but if anyone has any ideas they'd be much appreciated.

Answer
'Trip Wires' are not what you want.........50 years ago maybe. But today we have battery operated motion detectors, we have battery operated night vision cameras for under $29 and wireless battery operated cameras for under $40.

Instead of a trip wire - you simply put up a battery operated color daytime and IR nighttime camera with a wireless transmitter. Indoors you connect the wireless receiver to your tv or computer and use the software to view the picture...... the security cameras will have software that alerts you if a certain percentage of the image changes suddenly.

The internet is chock full of stores that sell this stuff. Most have cute web site names like spytown.com or can be found on ebay. They make some really powerful liner amps to boost the signal - and using directional or Yagi high db gain antennas you can push one of those little cameras up to 7 miles.

8 yeas ago I was able to mount a wireless camera on top of a Radio Shack 4x4 RC truck and we drove it all over the yard wile watching the camera image on the tv in our living room. I cabbaged that rig together from stuff bought off of ebay for under $90.

Many of these little cameras have an auxiliary contact. You mount the camera and attach a motion detector to the aux contacts. When the motion sensor detects something it triggers the contacts - the camera sends a signal to the receiver in your home and closes the aux contacts there - this will set off what ever light, bell, siren or what ever you want to alert you. This is the same signal usually used to jump a digital recorder from low fps to high fps (frames per second) or higher resolution.

Bottom line - there are tons of cheapo goodies out there. Start at ebay and take notes on what they are calling the different things - then hit the internet.

What's the best way to set up a home exterior security camera system?

I want to put up a camera (with night vision) on the front of my house, pointed at the road to record nighttime activities.

I want to record the video onto my computer.

I have several questions:

1. What's an effective and cheap way to do this?

2. What kind of camera should I look for? I'm thinking possibly using a standard Logitech webcam. Good idea?

3. What software do I use to receive the video & record it?

Thanks in advance.

Answer
Effective... get a decent quality video camera. Cheap, try using a webcam (quality of picture leaves much to be desired).

Best suggestion is to talk to a local electronics store. They will know how to set it up and best hardware to use.

Logitech webcam no good at handling moving pictures. Frame rates way too slow.

You might also want to look for issues of Canadian Security Magazine. Always good suggestions in there for home & business security at semi-affordable prices.

When you get the cam, it will supply you with a very basic vid record software. Try going to google ask looking up video recording software...

Need a 6 hour battery standalone wireless security camera to put in my car?

Hank600RR

I am moving into an apartment complex and need to put a camera up to watch my motorcycle when I am gone and am sleeping. It needs to have infrared vision for nighttime surveillance and about 100-200 feet range of a wifi connection.

Answer
Not many options available that I was able to find but I did find one that is technically a mini DVR that is capable of recording video or taking pictures when motion is detected. This way you don't have to worry about the Wi-Fi distance limitation.

is this vandalism? what can i get them for?

blackie

one night a group of people went to my girlfriends house and piled EVERYTHING on there porch in front of the doors and windows on the porch. in the morning they couldn't get out and had to have their neighbor come over and start moving things from the outside.

repeatedly things like this have been happening, but not quite as extreme. this morning there was just a large traffic cone sitting at the top steps in the middle of the porch.

its obnoxious and makes me worried for her. she also lives with 3 other girls.

i plan on buying some basic nighttime security cameras. its clearly happening very late at night. cause i went there last night at 3am to take care of her cause she was getting sick and it was not there, but it was when we woke up.

so im thinking if i can get video proof it can be maybe vandalism? but im unsure of that since nothing was damaged.
and trespassing
harassment since its constant
and endangering the lives of others when they piled things in front of the doors and windows.
their reporting it today. but i doubt police are going to care much about a traffic cone on the porch.

so what do you all think?

Answer
One possible scheme would be to put in a small solar system with batteries that can run for a few days without significant charging (depending on your typical weather patterns). The system would need to be big enough to operate a satellite-based internet connection (ex: HughesNet), the camera and lights for nighttime operation.

How well do they work? And how far away can you use the video or get pictures?

Answer
I do and they work great, I have at least one at each common entrance to my property, about 3, I go about once a week to switch out SD cards, not a big deal and I get a few pictures, I've even caught a couple poachers in the act, kinda hard to deny a picture of you dragging a deer in the dark with a rifle off a private property with the "no trespassing" sign in the picture lol.
range is usually marked on the camera's box, around 20-30 feet in dark, as far as the eye can see for daylight.
note: micheal, most nighttime able game cameras use infared camera tech and lights, so it's invisible to the naked eye, the reason the flash doesn't scare the animals away.
