I'm looking for a network security camera that I can put on the front porch (out of the rain/snow, but not out of the cold!). It needs to meet the following critera: 1) Can take HIGH RES pictures - I need to be able to actually SEE who was there, and identify them in court, for example. 2) It must be able to take pictures when it senses motion. 3) As there is lighting on the porch, night vision isn't required, but a low-light feature might be helpful. 4) It needs to store the pics centrally on a local server via ethernet, it case someone tries to damage it. Lastly 5) It has to be "home affordable" - I've found this camera for $3000, now I need a home version.

I've looked everywhere, and all recommendations had horrbile reviews. 3 out of 5 stars at best. HELP ME OUT!!!

I want to get a security camera, just one for now to watch the driveway of my house. I checked Amazon and eBay, there are so many camera I can't tell which is right for me. 420, 525, 36mm, etc I can't tell which one is important.

My problem: for the past few months deliveries from UPS were reported as having delivered (even those required signatures were just left unsigned) and when I checked, the packages are nowhere to be found. I am tired of filing complaint and waiting for replacement. I have no way of knowing if I have a dishonest delivery truck or if someone has been coming in and stealing after UPS leaves. Nothing like a stolen $1,000 camera lens that were supposed to be signed for (but never signed) to make someone at UPS HQ hopping mad.

I would like a camera that is able to use wireless network with WPK2 encryption or a plain wired ('d have to run a cable from router to outside), is outdoor friendly, and can be accessed from computer on network. What I plan is to use software that connects to the camera and record video if there's any movement. But I am open to suggestion as long as I can see the video and it can show what is going on in front of my house.

I do not want one that has overly wide angle, I'd like to see just the drive way from the under eaves of my house, not the whole world. Not too expensive, probably around $50. Two-way audio support is also not needed as I probably won't be at home if a crime occurs at my house. It'd have to be network capable as none of my computer has video capture hardware.

Outdoor security camera system?

We have recently installed a chain link fence behind our home and are planning on letting our great pyreneese out during the day when we are at work so she is not kept in her kennel. We have an awning for shade and shelter, and we will be home around 4:30 or 5:00 each day to check on her. With that being said, we have had issues somewhat in our neighborhood, due to a busy road behind our house. I am not comfortable leaving my dog outside all day or at any time actually without some sort of security system to monitor and video my dog, in case someone was to stop or try to pester etc my dog. I have looked online and have found a ton of outdoor security cameras, however, I have no idea what I am even looking for. I want something that records so that if I come home and somethings amiss, I can check the recording to see what happened that day. I also am needing this to be wireless and obviously weatherproof. All information, models, reviews etc are greatly appreciated.

Two types of systems:

1) Analog cameras connect to a DVR. The DVR connects to the computer network at your house. The DVR has the feature/functionality for the cameras (i.e., motion detection, send you email when an alarm event is triggered, local video storage for later review, etc.).

2) IP-network based cameras connect to the computer network at the house. The camera becomes a network node. For local video storage, a Network Video Recorder (NVR) is used.

Both methods have pros and cons. What I have found:

1) "Wireless camera" is an inaccurate description. The camera needs power (wire 1). For the first option, the wireless video signal is sent to a base station (or receiver). The receiver plugs into the DVR (video signal) and power (wires 2 and 3). Usually, these cameras are transmitting in the 2.4 Ghz range. This is a shared spectrum and can have interference from lots of sources - including wifi, garage door openers and cordless phones.

2) IP network cameras seem to be more expensive than the analog cameras. The imaging chip seems to be the first thing to go on any security camera, so I use the analog cams (connected to a DVR). The decent consumer cams start at about $150 or so. Less than this and I find myself replacing them at least annually - but at this price point (or higher), they seem to last a bit longer.

3) Because the DVR is on the network and maintains the features for the cameras - including network connectivity for remote viewing and storage, the cameras can be "dumb" = less expensive.

4) Set a budget. I like/use Swann and Lorex gear. It is more expensive than some others, but I have learned (the hard way) that you get what you pay for.

5) We don't know the yard layout. Generally, I would install cameras under the eaves of the house so they have some protection from the elements. We don't know where you are, but extreme heat and cold are not good for electronics. Installing under the eaves helps protect them from the elements (even though they are outdoor rated). If there are environmental extremes in your area, plan to replace the cameras often - or install them in protective housings. This also makes access to power a little easier if you go the wireless route. If you go with wired cameras, then running the single cable between a camera and the DVR may also be easier. That single cable has a couple of plugs on each side - one for power one for video.

You can have a mix of wired and wireless cameras.

6) Set a budget. For just the cameras and DVR, plan on about $1,000. If you can do the installation, great - otherwise, plan on that expense. Again, we don't know the layout... I suggest starting with a 8 or 9-camera DVR, but with 4 cameras. Example:

If you choose to use only 4 cameras for your stated purpose, no big deal - add cameras to the front and side of the house if you want... or leave the channels unused.

7) You can provision the DVR to send you email when there is an "alarm". If you set up the motion detection areas, that can be an "alarm". Be careful with this - you can end up spamming yourself with unnecessary email alarm alerts.

8) If you are familiar with how routers work, you can set up remote access through your home's router and get into the DVR remotely (after you get an email alert) using a smartphone with an installed client or a computer (Windows or Macintosh).

9) POWER:
if you are concerned about power outages and losing video then some sort of power back-up will be needed. This is where the wired cameras are easier - with the power and video signal coming to a single place, the DVR and all cameras can be plugged into a "UPS" commonly used for computers. And if the DVR is located near the computer network router, that can be plugged into the UPS, too. If "wireless" cameras are used, then each camera will need its own battery backup power supply.

I just moved into a new neighborhood and have had some issues with (what I believe to be) one of my neighbors. I have a set schedule every day and my roommates schedule varies (no one is home at all times to watch), but one particular neighbor has been trespassing and verbally harassing my pets.

We've caught him shining lights through our windows (from his property) at night as well as caught him harassing my dog through our front window. I want a camera to record these behaviors so I can go to the cops with confidence that something will be done about it.

I'd like to get a security camera that records to my laptop while I'm at work, and I can review it when I get home. I would like to place it on my second story wall (ample power supply there).

That camera isn't bad, but you probably don't need anything that elaborate. My suggestion would be to get a simple, but good quality, webcam and a USB extension cable. Look for a camera that has decent resolution, and is fairly small thus making it easy to conceal. You can easily record a webcam session for review when you get home.

IMPORTANT NOTE: DO NOT RECORD AUDIO! You'll noticed that whenever you see video surveillance images on the news and other shows that there is never any sound. The reason for this is because unattended recording of audio can be considered to fall under the illegal wiretapping provisions of federal (and in many cases state) law. It's stupid, I know, but there it is. You don't want to end up getting in trouble yourself while trying to protect yourself and your four-legged friends.

I had some friends over for a dinner party last weekend. It was a couple that I had known for several years who came in from New England, "Linda" and "Joe" my neighbor's from across the street "Karen" and "Pete" and their daughter "Jane". Jane is only 15 but she's a little trouble maker and I've had several problems with her, she wasn't even allowed at my house but I okayed it this time because she was grounded and her parents didn't want to leave her at home alone. In the past this girl has lied to me, she stole alcohol from my house, she teased my foster-son because his mother died of cancer, and she broke into my yard while I was away and used my pool (I found out through security cam video) This girl is bad news. Last weekend she took it too far and she destroyed my friendship with her parents.

Here is what happened:
I have a deck in front of my house use it to relax on we have outdoor furniture and a fireplace. Jane was sitting near the fire along with her parents, and my friend Joe. His wife, Linda was helping me in the kitchen. My husband and foster son were on the back deck BBQing. At some point Karen and Pete come inside to help set the table leaving Jane and Joe outside on the deck, alone. About 5 minutes later Joe comes inside and we start talking about how it was still 70F outside where I live (California) and it's raining and cold where he was living. Everything seemed fine until Jane comes in the house, she asks her mother if she could have a sip of her wine and Linda says "that's a no-no in my house, i'm a social worker you know...and i've seen kids kill themselves thinking they could drink." I added "sorry no underage drinking in my house" and Karen than added "you heard the women!" pissed she left the room. Later all the adults were in the dining room (dinner wasn't quite ready) and my fosterson and Jane were sitting in the living room where we have a full bar (it's usually locked but since we had guests over and there is a trap door under the bar into the wine cellar we had it open) My foster son comes into the dinning room and says "umm Jane's getting into the bar" Karen and I come out and Jane is trying to open the liquor cabinet in the bar, and a scene ensued.
Jane now crying, says she just wanted to "drowse" her sorrows because she was "molested by that creepy guy" ( she was trying to get out of being grounded for another 4 weeks) when her parents asked her to explain she said that when they left her out on the deck with joe that he walked up to her and showed her his penis told her "you better suck it and you better not tell" and than shoved himself in her mouth. As you can imagine Joe was freaked out he just keeped saying "never happend, never happend I just asked her how she was doing in school, id never do that." of coarse her parents took her side and were about to call the police when I told them to hold on let's all sit down for a sec before the police are called and talk about this, but no they just screamed at me and said I was enabling a child molester and that I should be ashamed they left and the police were called. Linda and Joe didn't leave my home since the police were coming. While we were waiting for the police my foster-son said "why don't we just review the security cameras like we did when the brat broke into our pool" so I did and the camera showed Joe sitting about 4 feet away from Jane, than it showed Jane talking to Joe, the audio was really hard to understand but this is what we could make out:

Jane: do you like the snow?
Joe: Not as much as when I was a child
Jane: I like the snow
Joe: do you have snow around her?
Jane: not that kind of snow, the kind that goes up your nose (laughing)
<silence for about 30secs>
Joe: how are you doing in school are you a good student?
Jane: <says something but we can't make it out>
Joe : Oh, I see. I better go back inside and sit with the wife

Joe than walks away the opposite direction of Jane at no point did he come close enough to Jane to shake her hand let alone what she was claiming.

The police asked Janes parents to come back over to see the video themselves, they did and they said sorry to all of us (but I don't think I will be talking to them again) They just made excuses for her saying that "She has a learning disability and it causes her to have a low self esteem and act out." when I asked what her learning disability is they said "dyslexia" I think it's something else because there has to be some other cause for her inexcusable behavior.

Sorry I know it's a long one but thanks for the advice.

Well, that is a long question indeed.
Personally, we all know that nearly everyone has things in their lives that make them difficult, maybe this girl did as well, but as you have mentioned, that is absolutely no way to deal with it.
Dyslexia obviously can not cause a child to have that much anger and problems, maybe OCD, or ADD.
That would be understandable.
But not this.
I highly doubt he "raped" her. From what you have told us, it is obvious that the child is lying.
Isnt it somewhat revolting.. the extents some go for attention?
That just might be it.. she might be doing all of this to get attention, maybe her parents never gave her enough attention as a child, or in other specific circumstances.
She might feel neglected, therefore acting out in such a manner is her way to make up for all of the loss attention she never got.
She most definitely is not good news, but keep in mind, everybody has a breaking point, and this girl still has a heart even though at times, her heart might in fact seem dark/cold.
I pity the fact you and the man who was accused of being raped had to endure this, I hope it is all over for the most part.
For the family, be friendly (as in acquaintance friendly) but not overly welcoming, and inviting. Avoid the child as much as possible and your problems will soon vanish in a mere amount of time.

I've priced a base system (1 camera with infrared capability / 80G DVR / labor) for $1100 w/ a local security company. It jumps up to $2200 for additional cameras and higher-functioning DVR (160G). Can a regular man install this sort of system?

Yes, I've installed two different digital video recording systems myself, bought the PCs from the local computer store, bought the PCI cards on-line and bought used CCTV cameras off eBay, bought the wire and connections at a local electronics store. They work like a champ.

The advantage of PCs is that the image is already digitized and I can monitor and review over the internet from another location (securely).

Approximate cost: New PC: $200 (open-box store PC returned by a previous customer, works fine), new PCI card: $29, 4 used CCTV cameras from eBay $80 ($20 each), wire and connections I didn't add it up but may run something less than $100 unless you want really long lines.

You cannot beat the quality and price of used CCTV cameras off eBay, although, like anything else eBay, you have to buy things that work. A few CCTV cameras I bought didn't work. Not knowing anything about cameras, I opened them up anyway and resoldered loose connections and they worked!

My second system has a similar PC except I bought a nicer PCI card for about $250 and have indoor/outdoor IR (night lighted) cameras that cost around $100 each.

They both have been running fine for over a year so far. And I'm not a security or PC expert but have learned a few things along the way.

My cat has been gone for a week is that too long?

He was an outdoor cat then we moved and tried to make him and indoor cat but every week or so he gets really weird and I mean weird so he does his best to get out and has done so three times before this. The first time he was gone for a day and we caught him in the yard and the second he was gone for like three days and we caught him in the yard again but the last time he was gone for four days and just came back on his own up to the porch while we were sitting there. He has been gone for a week now and we leave food out for him and something sure is eating it but I'm afraid something has happened to him or when he comes home he doesn't stay because we aren't outside like he has no way in so he leaves. It's getting cold and snowy so it worries me even more because shouldn't he want to come home to get out of the cold? What should we do?

I'd find a place to put a covered box with a doorway and pet bed, or old blanket, in it. This will give the cat a place to be where it can be warm, and near you. place the food and water dish nearby, and hope for the best. One never knows what to expect, and the only way to be sure whats eating the food is a security camera on the area, with tapes to review.

I'm looking for a good office camera security system. Any recommendations?

I would prefer the cameras to be wireless and to have a DVR. It would be nice if there was an app I could access the system from my phone. I would probably need at least 12 cameras.

I like Swann and Lorex systems for these (or smaller) systems.

There may be valu in getting two systems so if one fails, all the cameras are not down - but that is up to you.

Since we do not know the office layout, we do not know how the "wireless" part will work going through walls made of various materials.

Quick review:

Wired security cameras have a single "bundled" cable that contains the video feed and power. There are two plugs at the camera - one for power and one for video. At the DVR there is a connection for the video and the power plug connects to a power source - usually a "wall wart" or some sort. You can locate a battery back-up system at the DVR to power the DVR and the camera in the event of a power outage.

Wireless security cameras send only the video wirelessly. The camera still needs power (wire #1). If battery backup is needed, then some sort of local UPS is needed. The video is transmitted wirelessly to its base station mate. The base station needs power (wire #2). The base station connects with wire (#3) to the DVR.

You will also want to invest in a couple of monitors that connect to the DVR. 16 channels is a lot to watch. For the monitor at the DVR, a low priced, VGA-connected computer monitor is fine. There may be a need to have auxilliary monitors around the rest of the property. Use of the composite video out makes that easy.

Connecting the DVR to the computer network is easy enough - be sure the network is segmented using a network switch (not just a hub) so the video traffic and be isolated from the rest of the network. Use of PnP is easy, but a network admin with half a clue will know how to set the IP address and security properly. Also, for the remote access you want, setting up the router to allow your access while maintaining network security is needed. Again, any half skilled network admin who understands IP networks and router configuration can do this. This works best if your internet provider gives you a static IP address, but can still work if a dynamic address is used - there are some work-arounds and compromises you'll make is you go this route.

I would suggest sizing the system with more ports for cameras than you think you need - in case you decide to add cameras. In this case, two 8-channel systems gives you decent coverage. And a composite security camera will work on any manufacturer's system. I have installed Swann DVRs with Swann, Lorex and other manufacturer's analog, composite video, security cameras...

You did not tell us if the cameras will all be indoors or if there will be any out door (parking lot, alley, etc) in which case you may want outdoor-rated night-vision cameras in addition to the indoor versions.

I just moved into a new neighborhood and have had some issues with (what I believe to be) one of my neighbors. I have a set schedule every day and my roommates schedule varies (no one is home at all times to watch), but one particular neighbor has been trespassing and verbally harassing my pets.

We've caught him shining lights through our windows (from his property) at night as well as caught him harassing my dog through our front window. I want a camera to record these behaviors so I can go to the cops with confidence that something will be done about it.

I'd like to get a security camera that records to my laptop while I'm at work, and I can review it when I get home. I would like to place it on my second story wall (ample power supply there).

But I have absolutely no clue what it records to or anything like that. Any camera suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Also, if there's a camera that can record to a USB device or the like and THEN I can review it on my laptop that would work fine. It needs to record at least 8 hours (while I'm at work.)

That camera isn't bad, but you probably don't need anything that elaborate. My suggestion would be to get a simple, but good quality, webcam and a USB extension cable. Look for a camera that has decent resolution, and is fairly small thus making it easy to conceal. You can easily record a webcam session for review when you get home.

IMPORTANT NOTE: DO NOT RECORD AUDIO! You'll noticed that whenever you see video surveillance images on the news and other shows that there is never any sound. The reason for this is because unattended recording of audio can be considered to fall under the illegal wiretapping provisions of federal (and in many cases state) law. It's stupid, I know, but there it is. You don't want to end up getting in trouble yourself while trying to protect yourself and your four-legged friends.

what could be going on in this girls life that she would do such a thing?

I had some friends over for a dinner party last weekend. It was a couple that I had known for several years who came in from New England, "Linda" and "Joe" my neighbor's from across the street "Karen" and "Pete" and their daughter "Jane". Jane is only 15 but she's a little trouble maker and I've had several problems with her, she wasn't even allowed at my house but I okayed it this time because she was grounded and her parents didn't want to leave her at home alone. In the past this girl has lied to me, she stole alcohol from my house, she teased my foster-son because his mother died of cancer, and she broke into my yard while I was away and used my pool (I found out through security cam video) This girl is bad news. Last weekend she took it too far and she destroyed my friendship with her parents.

Here is what happened:
I have a deck in front of my house use it to relax on we have outdoor furniture and a fireplace. Jane was sitting near the fire along with her parents, and my friend Joe. His wife, Linda was helping me in the kitchen. My husband and foster son were on the back deck BBQing. At some point Karen and Pete come inside to help set the table leaving Jane and Joe outside on the deck, alone. About 5 minutes later Joe comes inside and we start talking about how it was still 70F outside where I live (California) and it's raining and cold where he was living. Everything seemed fine until Jane comes in the house, she asks her mother if she could have a sip of her wine and Linda says "that's a no-no in my house, i'm a social worker you know...and i've seen kids kill themselves thinking they could drink." I added "sorry no underage drinking in my house" and Karen than added "you heard the women!" pissed she left the room. Later all the adults were in the dining room (dinner wasn't quite ready) and my fosterson and Jane were sitting in the living room where we have a full bar (it's usually locked but since we had guests over and there is a trap door under the bar into the wine cellar we had it open) My foster son comes into the dinning room and says "umm Jane's getting into the bar" Karen and I come out and Jane is trying to open the liquor cabinet in the bar, and a scene ensued.
Jane now crying, says she just wanted to "drowse" her sorrows because she was "molested by that creepy guy" ( she was trying to get out of being grounded for another 4 weeks) when her parents asked her to explain she said that when they left her out on the deck with joe that he walked up to her and showed her his penis told her "you better suck it and you better not tell" and than shoved himself in her mouth. As you can imagine Joe was freaked out he just keeped saying "never happend, never happend I just asked her how she was doing in school, id never do that." of coarse her parents took her side and were about to call the police when I told them to hold on let's all sit down for a sec before the police are called and talk about this, but no they just screamed at me and said I was enabling a child molester and that I should be ashamed they left and the police were called. Linda and Joe didn't leave my home since the police were coming. While we were waiting for the police my foster-son said "why don't we just review the security cameras like we did when the brat broke into our pool" so I did and the camera showed Joe sitting about 4 feet away from Jane, than it showed Jane talking to Joe, the audio was really hard to understand but this is what we could make out:

Jane: do you like the snow?
Joe: Not as much as when I was a child
Jane: I like the snow
Joe: do you have snow around her?
Jane: not that kind of snow, the kind that goes up your nose (laughing)
<silence for about 30secs>
Joe: how are you doing in school are you a good student?
Jane: <says something but we can't make it out>
Joe : Oh, I see. I better go back inside and sit with the wife

Joe than walks away the opposite direction of Jane at no point did he come close enough to Jane to shake her hand let alone what she was claiming.

The police asked Janes parents to come back over to see the video themselves, they did and they said sorry to all of us (but I don't think I will be talking to them again) They just made excuses for her saying that "She has a learning disability and it causes her to have a low self esteem and act out." when I asked what her learning disability is they said "dyslexia" I think it's something else because there has to be some other cause for her inexcusable behavior.

Sorry I know it's a long one but thanks for the advice.

Well, that is a long question indeed.
Personally, we all know that nearly everyone has things in their lives that make them difficult, maybe this girl did as well, but as you have mentioned, that is absolutely no way to deal with it.
Dyslexia obviously can not cause a child to have that much anger and problems, maybe OCD, or ADD.
That would be understandable.
But not this.
I highly doubt he "raped" her. From what you have told us, it is obvious that the child is lying.
Isnt it somewhat revolting.. the extents some go for attention?
That just might be it.. she might be doing all of this to get attention, maybe her parents never gave her enough attention as a child, or in other specific circumstances.
She might feel neglected, therefore acting out in such a manner is her way to make up for all of the loss attention she never got.
She most definitely is not good news, but keep in mind, everybody has a breaking point, and this girl still has a heart even though at times, her heart might in fact seem dark/cold.
I pity the fact you and the man who was accused of being raped had to endure this, I hope it is all over for the most part.
For the family, be friendly (as in acquaintance friendly) but not overly welcoming, and inviting. Avoid the child as much as possible and your problems will soon vanish in a mere amount of time.

My cat has been gone for a week is that too long?

He was an outdoor cat then we moved and tried to make him and indoor cat but every week or so he gets really weird and I mean weird so he does his best to get out and has done so three times before this. The first time he was gone for a day and we caught him in the yard and the second he was gone for like three days and we caught him in the yard again but the last time he was gone for four days and just came back on his own up to the porch while we were sitting there. He has been gone for a week now and we leave food out for him and something sure is eating it but I'm afraid something has happened to him or when he comes home he doesn't stay because we aren't outside like he has no way in so he leaves. It's getting cold and snowy so it worries me even more because shouldn't he want to come home to get out of the cold? What should we do?

I'd find a place to put a covered box with a doorway and pet bed, or old blanket, in it. This will give the cat a place to be where it can be warm, and near you. place the food and water dish nearby, and hope for the best. One never knows what to expect, and the only way to be sure whats eating the food is a security camera on the area, with tapes to review.

I've priced a base system (1 camera with infrared capability / 80G DVR / labor) for $1100 w/ a local security company. It jumps up to $2200 for additional cameras and higher-functioning DVR (160G). Can a regular man install this sort of system?

Any and all information is appreciated.

Yes, I've installed two different digital video recording systems myself, bought the PCs from the local computer store, bought the PCI cards on-line and bought used CCTV cameras off eBay, bought the wire and connections at a local electronics store. They work like a champ.

The advantage of PCs is that the image is already digitized and I can monitor and review over the internet from another location (securely).

Approximate cost: New PC: $200 (open-box store PC returned by a previous customer, works fine), new PCI card: $29, 4 used CCTV cameras from eBay $80 ($20 each), wire and connections I didn't add it up but may run something less than $100 unless you want really long lines.

You cannot beat the quality and price of used CCTV cameras off eBay, although, like anything else eBay, you have to buy things that work. A few CCTV cameras I bought didn't work. Not knowing anything about cameras, I opened them up anyway and resoldered loose connections and they worked!

My second system has a similar PC except I bought a nicer PCI card for about $250 and have indoor/outdoor IR (night lighted) cameras that cost around $100 each.

They both have been running fine for over a year so far. And I'm not a security or PC expert but have learned a few things along the way.
