Takes a pretty special camera to do that. Most cameras are fixed and just cover a big area, you can go in on the "tape" later and zoom in on people. Other ones just wave back and forth on some program, we could program ours to do a pattern. There are some cameras that activate on movement but to follow it is a whole nother deal

I am a network administrator. Recently, a number of local companies have been hacked, some from the Internet and some by physical break-ins. I need to address these possibilities for my company. What security tools and procedures can anyone recommend to deploy and use in a situation like this? For the network? What vulnerabilities would these monitor or correct? With these in place, what would the network still be vulnerable to? All info is appreciated.. thanks â¥

You can reduce the risk by applying good business judgement and procedures. Someone mentioned SANS and INSECURE.ORG as a start. You will also need to implement good governance and risk management programs at the company to...again...reduce the risk from these things to happen.

For IT Governance you can use COBIT 4 and GAIT (ITGeneral Controls Scope Based on Risk (GAIT).) from ISACA and The IIA respectively. Their links are:

You can use also the European version of COBIT if you search for ISO17799 and also ITL.

All these are control objectives of the IT Environment that serves as the guide to best practices.

For Internet break-in you need to watch your entry points and their vulnerabilities. This inclues the settings on the firewall, VPN, Remote Access, and Web Services (IIS, FTP, Email) for example. On each you would like to harden their configuration to prevent misconfigurations that a hacker can use to break into your systems. The Center For Internet Security (cisecurity.org) has develop benchmarks for OS and some appliances that you can test the configuration and apply best practices design by experts.

This is just one step, you can do your own checks with nessus to verity you don't have holes in your network. Be careful running this tool. There is an option to run scans that are very intrusive and can perform denial of service attacks (DOS) on your machines. If you decide to run these scans you should coordinate them to make sure you can recover if something goes wrong.

Next, you should have Intrusion Prevention Systems (IPS) and Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) depending on your taste and budget. A good free IDS that runs on LINUX is Snort (snort.org). There is a lot of add ons for Snort that are GPL and can be found at sourceforge.net. If you don't want to mess around the configuration of LINUX and the Snort application you can download a virtual appliance from VMWare already pre-configured (www.vmware.com). The server version that runs on LINUX or Windows Servers is free of charge. I would be surprise if you are not using VMWare or MS Virtual PC. However, VMWare is the leader on virtual technology.

Now that you have preventive and detective controls is time to look at each individual vulnerabilities of the services you provide or the devices you are trying to protect.

For email you would want to have an appliance that can filter spam and that can block individuals from browsing places that can get infected with internet scripts. This can still be achieved centrally on the network.

On the desktop you would want to have good antivirus software installed and periodically scanning for viruses. The leaders are Symantec and McAffee. Each one has its pro/cons.

You would want to establish a periodic review to check what software gets installed all computers including the servers. Look for P2P, IRC, FTP Servers, and anything that can create a conversation with the exterior.

Establish a periodic review to check rouge devices, wireless, with netstumbler (netstumbler.org) and confiscate any that is physically connected to the network ASAP (extends your network and your security risks)

For physical security I can send you an audit program that covers some basic and standard things us IT Auditors look for. For example things we look at like security guards, cameras, the position doors open, ornamental barriers that serve as physical security, signs that can give the location of the data center, barriers to prevent cars crashing into the building, access configurations, etc...

Also, you should implement a security awareness program if you have not done so. This will educate the end-user on thing to watch for and things not to do while using email, internet, and other treats like social engineering attempts.

Anybody have any experience with security cameras and their capabilities?

My friend and I have been searching for security cameras for his bar. We have searched the internet to see basic capabilities. Basically, he is searching for something to help deter the vandalism and bar fights in the parking lot. I have came across some sites on the internet that show night time footage and none are very good at distance in low light areas. Hell in fact none are that good at night period. You can see the actual acts going on but actually identifying the perps is nearly impossible. Even some of the footage from the UK where they have cameras every where is pretty unclear at night. Is this what is to be expected from fixed position cameras at night? Even the cameras that have IR and high resolution are not that great at night, when it comes to picking up good images, is this just the norm when it comes to cameras at night? I think you are just not thinking outside the box enough. How about going into some Hunting sites and looking at the cameras they have for photographing(in the dark) deer & other hunted animals. These cameras have to be sturdy & water resistant/waterproof. They can be set up on trees or where ever needed. You can try:

Basically, I've had this idea for a plot for the last 5 years, I've tried to write it but I ran out of time with school & stuff happening at home


It will be called âThe Wordsmithâ and basically follows the life of a writer. He doesnât adhere to deadlines and neglects his relationships when immersed in writing. However, he is an excellent writer, and his publisher hangs on to him in hope of him producing good quality works.

One day he comes up with a character that mesmerises him. Obsessed with her, he starts to write about her, without planning the book or considering the plot. In his dreams/when he blacks out (alcohol etc.), he starts to visualise her â imagining being in her room, following her, etc. and the scenes are written onto his computer in his prose. It scares him, but he is addicted, and slowly the book involves a massive community and whole new world. He continues blacking out and existing in this otherworld and starts writing the book to put himself in positions of power. He gets into arguments with locals & then kills them through writing and he makes changes appear out of nowhere (characters canât ever remember it not existing), etc.

The characters start to get suspicious about him but canât remember what is wrong/different. They start following him and notice he disappears and reappears. Meanwhile, he is getting more obsessed (stalking) and tries to force her to love him â instead she contacts the local police, gets security cameras/alarms and buys a gun. She also starts writing down everything she does. He makes the police, security cameras/alarms & her gun disappear, and tries to write in her love for him. It lasts for a day, but she reads her notes and her love is lost. The locals also find his notebook listing all the things he plans to change. They think he is psycho/demonic/magical & responsible for the disappearances/deaths. He loses control and is unable to unwrite the entire communityâs memories and canât stop visiting the place. In desperation whilst stalking, he tries to tie up the girl in her house, but she pulls down a cupboard on him & knocks him out. She alerts others, who, in mob-style fashion, decide the only thing to do to stop him is to kill him (because he can disappear & reappear). They attack him with poles/stones/fire until he dies, and in the real world, he ceases to have ever existed

Right at the start, he is in complete control of the characters, but quickly they develop their own personality, actions and memories and reject his power so he is unable to control the characters or kill them off through writing. The town is an alternate, very real reality, which currently exists just as the town. Although he doesn't realise this, he is literally transporting from one reality to the other each time he blacks out


What do you think & are there any ways I could make it better?

by characters, I mean the people the author made and then interacted with when he enters the world he created
@Somnus: It is an 'alternate reality' he has created (it only consists of the village), but he is not in complete control. The characters still have memories, personality and such and their personalities are unable to be changed by his perspective. He initially believes the girl loves him and is submissive, and tries to write her that way, but when brought into existence, she is not submissive and her own person, which means she eventually physically rejects his words. So his characters have as much power as he does, plus he would be entirely unable to erase an entire 'village'. Maybe I should include a section where he tries to end everything but it fails?

If I park my car on my driveway (close to the street) with a sign on the back reading "Hooray Zimmerman is NOT guilty!"

I took a tour of a detention center sometime ago here in Maryland, and apparently there's a guy in a control tower that looks at all the security cameras... deciding when to open doors for people. What's that guy's job title?

He is just a regular corrections officer just like the rest of them in the control room who can see everything with cameras. They just rotate that certain position.

I work for a chain of restaurants with IBM till systems. We will soon be connecting our tills to DSL modems. I need to allow certain programs to access our modem / internet connection (security cameras and credit card processing software), but I don't want my employees surfing the web. Does anyone know how to put a password on the browser so that they can't bring up the window?

What operating system are you using? If you are running Windows XP, 2000 or 2003, you can apply Group Policy which restricts the use of Internet Explorer. If you can provide more details on your operating system, I'll be in a better position to advice.

Just follow the listed instructions........
Just decide where you want to position the camera and drill holes to mount the bracket.
Drill a hole through the wall for the camera wire.
Attach the mounting bracket.
Attach wires to the camera.
Feed the security camera wire through the wall.
Attach the camera to the mounting bracket.
Position the camera so that it faces the proper area.
Attach the security camera wire to the monitor or receiver inside your home.
Test your home security camera to make sure it is working properly.

I am looking for an home security camera sytem that I could link with my tv on it's own channel.

Trying to stay below $400, I could do any wiring myself. I live in South Florida so it gets to be around 90 degrees on average. Just a standard resolution in color. Night vision would be a big plus but not needed. If it could be directed to the video input on a receiver that could work also. Would want it to store recordings.

On its own channel? Some RF modulators can be expensive, especially if you want to select the channel. Easier if you just use one of the other video inputs that are not in use.

What is your budget?
What resolution are you looking for?
Will the video need to be recorded and stored? If yes, what surveillance DVR are you looking at?
Only one camera?
Is night vision required? If yes, how far does the camera need to see in darkness?
Does the camera need to be outdoor rated?
Does it snow where you live? If yes, you may need a housing with a heater unit.
Does it get REALLY hot where you live? If yes, you might need a housing with a cooling system.
Is the video signal to be wired or wireless?
Is there power available where you plan to install the camera?
Is the camera going to stay in one position or is pan/tilt/zoom control required?

You have not provided enough information for anyone to provide you a good recommendation.

Why don't the ships in danger of hi jacking have security cameras to watch for pirates?

We have mega technology available in security Cameras. You would think the Insurance companies insuring the ships would be screaming for security like this.
Would it not be a simple idea to mount the camra on a water cannon that the ships have and drown the pirates. If you put armed guards on the ships it will Increase prices.Plus the armed guards will cause the pirates to increase thier firepower. The days of USA super power is fadding fast if we don't get it right. We are not as strong as in 1959. George seen too that. $$$$$$$$$ To China

I don't know if you've noticed, but it is taking DAYS for the Navy to get in position. Security cameras only document what's going on. You still need someone to respond to the situation, or you need to have armed guards on the ships.
