ive got a small business. and ive got cameras at my shop. can i view them from home online on my computer without software or without spending a bunch of money? thanks

There are 2 types of CCTV cameras:
1. traditional CCTV cameras with analogue video signal output
2. modern network cameras (IP cameras) with Ethernet network plug RJ-45

In case of traditional CCTV cameras you need additional equipment for remote monitoring

But if you have IP cameras installed mostlikely you can easily organize remote monitoring.
With most of IP cameras you can see live video using your Internet browswer (like Internet Explorer) when you type IP address in the browswer. Something like http:// 192.168.1.1
(if the camera as IP address 192.168.1.1).

To record the video you need additional software. There are plenty (maybe 50) diffrent IP video software vendors. For a start you can have a look on software list at http://www.video-home-surveillance.com/

Additionally some IP cameras can send emails with images when motion detectors "sees" motion. In this case you can go without any additional software. E.g. have a look on AXIS cameras at http://www.axis.com

But in case if you have traditional CCTV cameras to make the remote monitoring you will need
a DVR (digital video recorder) with remote access or a DVR board with a special surveillance software to make remote monitoring.

Along with the cameras, you will also want a security digital video recorder (DVR) to record the video. If anything occurs while he is out of town, he can access the video remotely anywhere in the world using an internet connection.

If the cameras are only going to be installed inside of the house, then a simple color CCD camera will be fine. If any cameras are going to be installed outside of the house, he should go with a day/night camera that automatically switches from color to black & white in low-light conditions (black & white produces a much clearer picture in low-light). He will also need an enclosure for any of the outdoor cameras to protect from the elements.

I do not recommend buying any "no-name" products when it comes to security/surveillance. As a professional in the industry, I can tell you that there are literally hundreds of new manufacturers trying to break into the rapid-growing surveillance market. There products are cheap, unreliable, and it is very easy to hack into all of their products if they are being used with remote access.

security camera tampering?

I work at our local school district which is equipped with security cameras. Recently, a theft occurred which may have involved a supervisor/night time security. When the employee asked for cameras to be checked, the supervisor claimed she "did not see anyone" going into a locked closet where the employees keys were taken out of. Also, when asked to view the footage along with the supervisor, the supervisor said, "No.You don't need to see." My question is, can frames of footage be edited out or deleted out. The security system is loaded into the supervisors computer that is equipped for real-time viewing and archive viewing.

If it's an "inside job", someone besides the supervisor in question needs to see and review the original video files. Most CCTV systems have to be installed & maintained by licensed professionals, and have data security measures (time stamping, log files, file encryption & backup measures) to prevent tampering or to show when tampering has been attempted.

But on simple DVR-based (digital hard-drive video recorders), a skilled person could attempt to modify or delete certain scenes. As I said, attempts like that by anyone but the most-skilled data hacker would leave a "trail" on some data log or file-change log, in a well-designed system.

Someone at the School District level (District Superintendant or School Board rank) should intervene in the matter, since civil employee theft and fraud has become commonplace in many School Districts (especially at the maintenance & purchasing department levels).

If you need to, do an anonymous "whistleblower" report to the District higher-ups and/or whatever County Commissioners or overseeing tax body handles the budget money. They'll tend to get beneath the suspicious veneer of "You don't need to see...".

Q. i have in greece my summer home where i do vacations for the last 10 years when we came back for easter or summer something was stollen or the home was robbed (we knew who but we couldnt prove it) at january the 1 st my home was vandalized from one of the neighboors and also took as land where we had our main doors some old bakery avoun and all cost 20000 euros and for that we put 6 security cameras {also my father owns a security company} so we put only sings that the place was protected by a security company and that we have security cameras and when i came back at 10 of mayand i saw on the recorder 2 of the thiefs and pressed charges on court.now the are making the neighboors a temporally court because they want 2 take off our security cameras because they are being anoyed[...it seems that they are bothered that they stole us and we have them on cam..] and they say that they dont want the security cameras. CAN U PLEASE GIVE ME SOME ADVISE ALSO CAN A LAWYER CAN ADVISE ME ANYTHING HE OR SHE THINKS THAT I SHOULD TELL ON COURT...?

OK here is a scenario. If someone breaks into your home and steals your computer... Or what if your computer crashed... no this never happens with Windows :P

There are many computer video card systems out there, however you may want to consider a separate DVR (Digital Video recorder). There are many models out there but if you are looking for usable image quality you need to be careful about the unit you choose.

As for wireless camera's? Why? Image quality wise you can't beat hardwire. It may look good on a colour monitor but if you compare the two next to each other you will notice major differences in facial details etc. Of course that being said, if you are just doing it for entertainment and basic info I wouldn't worry about the quality.

When it comes to quality lens and camera selection is the most important factor. After all if you have crappy camera's the best DVR will not make a difference. The same goes for a DVR if the camera's are great but the compression on the DVR results in crap images, why waste your money on a DVR?

Okay, my uncle is quite paranoid, so he had asked me to ask a question

1. We have security cameras in our factory. We have tapes to record things. Is it possible to have backup recorders in the other parts of the building

2. If there was a commotion outside, is it required of a police/officer to run out of the camera room (thus leaving the room open for anyone)? Or is it required that the officer should stay in his room?

well, answering your first question, yes, it is possible to have back-up recorders in other parts of the building.

I think not all security cameras are real or functioning. Some security team uses fake cams to make the burglars avoid the fake ones and make them visible to the real ones.

Regarding your 2nd question, the police officer should not get out of the camera room to respond if there was a commotion outside, thus, alarming the guard posted nearest to the place of the commotion and the patroling guards to respond to it. In that way, he/ she can still manage to secure all areas covered by the security cameras even he/she is responding to the commotion by alarming his/her fellow guards on site if there's any additional threat.

Cheap Security Camera?

What is the cheapest security/surveillance camera on the market? - Any camera that can record footage, that can later be hooked up to a computer, so that the footage can be extracted.

A webcam is about the cheapest thing going, works as well as anything else. It really depends on what you want the camera to cover, and how close the computer is to that spot.

Security cameras, as in the ones you see at the stores, don't record anything. They are connected to a central recording device, via cable or WiFi. If you need a remote camera that can't be connected to a central recorder, you would really need to get a video camera. Not really a good option, but better than nothing. Power would be the main problem with a video camera.

With most of IP cameras you can see live video using your Internet browswer (like Internet Explorer) when you type IP address in the browswer. Something like http:// 192.168.1.1

Very easy to do with the technology available in today's CCTV industry.

Along with the cameras, you will also want a security digital video recorder (DVR) to record the video. If anything occurs while he is out of town, he can access the video remotely anywhere in the world using an internet connection.

If the cameras are only going to be installed inside of the house, then a simple color CCD camera will be fine. If any cameras are going to be installed outside of the house, he should go with a day/night camera that automatically switches from color to black & white in low-light conditions (black & white produces a much clearer picture in low-light). He will also need an enclosure for any of the outdoor cameras to protect from the elements.

I do not recommend buying any "no-name" products when it comes to security/surveillance. As a professional in the industry, I can tell you that there are literally hundreds of new manufacturers trying to break into the rapid-growing surveillance market. There products are cheap, unreliable, and it is very easy to hack into all of their products if they are being used with remote access.

3. You will need at least DSL, preferably high-speed cable at your friends home which will be directly connected into the DVR. He will not be able to access the video remotely on a regular dial-up internet connection.

I suggest you buy a PC based DVR has they have more processing power and normally have a much smaller file size and offer more features then Standalone DVR's. I know many people buy a cheap standalone DVR, only to upgrade to a PC based in 6 months especially when they are using it to manage a store remotely. Also PC based allows you to record up to 64 cameras where a standalone will have a limit of 16.

File size is crucial to streaming because most DVRâs on the market record at real time performance (30FPS per channel) so on a 4CH is trying to send 120, 8CH 240, and a 16CH 480 images per second which requires way too much bandwidth even for the most extreme internet connections.

The smaller the files size the more images are able to be sent, and the faster they can be processed improving both FPS and speed. File size is the heart of any DVR and goes far beyond just its streaming capabilities, as it also determines the recording storage time, how much you can back up at once, how fast it renders and searches video. I've ths idea of using my webcam as a security camera which will record the videos in the hard disk while I'm not at home. To do so, I need a video recorder software which'll take the video feed input frm the webcam and save it into the hard disk. Am I right?

I have a creative webcam, and it came with software that turns your pc into a security system with a program that came with the camera called Webcam Monitor. In this program you can set up your camera to start recording a clip when it detects motion, and then it will send an e-mail to a specified e-mail address. I wasn't able to set it up correctly though and I don't know what I was doing wrong.

Some of the smaller units are wireless and cost under $75. Some of the self-contained units are a bit more.
