How do I setup my internet Security Camera?

drunkenold

I have an Internet Security Camera that only connects to an Ethernet cable and a powercord. I have it set up through my router, (it gives it IP 192.168.1.3) I can access this camera from within my network; but how can I access this from the Internet? That 192. number obviously isn't it's real IP number it's what the router gives it. So what do I do?

Answer
First you will need to determine what port number the camera is configured to use for access. Not knowing your make of the camera I can only speculate what features are available. If it has a built in web engine then you will need to go into the settings and find the port # ie:8000, 8080 etc etc. In your router you will need to set the port forwarding to the camera's IP address and that port number. Some camera clients use more than one port for other features so include those in your forwarding if you are planning to use the camera's software and not a web browser. Lastly it is likely you have a dynamic ip address meaning that your isp issues your IP address on a lease...some for hours, days others for months and the IP could and most likely change. If you want to always check your IP address before you go (hopefully it won't change while ur out) then disregard the following and you are done. However you can go to some of the available dns service sites like http://www.dyndns.com/services/dns/dyndns/
which allows you to install software that automatically updates your ip address to a free domain name. So when you are out you would type in the domain name vs the ip. ie: theallseeingeye.dyndns.org which would resolve to your external ip address (you can replace the dyndns.org from a list they have available) I have several dlinks that already have dynamic dns options available so check your settings. Hope this helps. Good Luck

I need something real cheap, its for outside. I'm fine with using a webcam if that'll work

I've had to deal with police, and want to know from inside if someone is outside.

what is the best security camera setup for me?

Chris

ok so here this goes. I'm a pretty aware person, I've worked in security for over 5 years. Im not a doomsday prepper but i like to have extra stuff in case i need it. i recently moved in with my girlfriend and her family in a condo complex. There are no cameras in the complex. today i walked outside to go to an apointment and im starring at a blank spot where my motorcycle used to be. some fuckers picked it up and loaded and ran. i had it covered and the fork locked. i have insurance that will cover it but what burns me inside is i dont know who did it. so to cut this shorter i want to know if someone out there could give me advice on what security cameras to buy. heres my idea. i can mount a camera in the kitchen window facing the parking lot that will record 24/7. it doesnt need to move, but will need night vision. i just want peace of mind for my car now and for all my roomates as well. so im wondering what are some good brand of cameras for this? im not looking to spend a whole lot im unemployed at the time. a couple of hundred would probably be my limit. so what would i want my setup be able to do? id like to be able to see a vehicle or person at approximately a hundred feet. maybe im overreacting with this idea. but i feel vulnerable. when your at a complex and all your vehicles are parked outside anyone can just come along and snatch them....

What is the cheapest system to record the video from a security camera i just bought. I bought it on ebay its a 30 led color security camera with audio and i can connect it to the tv but i need something so it can record the video and also something cheap im new to this because someone threw rocks at my window randomly and we thought it was gunshots. I tried a vcr but it dosent record for that long

Answer
You can use your vcr if you set it for EP (extended play mode). That way, it will, with a T-120 tape, record up to 6 hours in it's most basic mode. If you can find a T-160 tape, it will record 8 hours worth.

You could program your computer to record to it's harddrive, but I'll leave that answer to others more familiar with the setup and technique.
