Home Security System?

tata

My neighbor just got broken in yesterday and I'm thinking about put in the home security system at my house. Can anyone please recommend one? There are so many out there. I need to keep the cost as low as possible. If you have experienced with one please let me know what you think of them, the good and the bad.

Thank you for your time.

Answer
all home security systems offered by companies like ADT,will charge a monitoring fee, this can be expensive. you can go to radio shack and get almost the same stuff. plus with radio shack stuff you have the convienince of adding additional equipment to the main system, grant it radio shack isnt the top of the line but it its not bad,you can also get infrared-motion sensing color cameras. the are relatively inexpensive. you can place them in areas wherever you want. menards may still sell a motion sensing light that you can hookup to an outside source and with this kit there is a separate plug in piece that you can put anywhere in your house and plug things into it.when the motion sensor is trippped, whatever you have plugged in to the separate piece will turn on. the nice thing about this is you do not have to have the light in the external motion sensor itself and the internal connection still works by doing it this way if the internal piece is activated the would be robber will not even know that he tripped it,you can add up to 4 internal sensors on the 1 outside motion sensor.also all you have to do, other than wiring the external fixture is simply plug the internal piece in-thats all. the only bad thing is if you want additional inside alarms, they are not sold separate, so you have to buy the whole kit for each additional inside alarm.i think they are about $40.00 a piece. i have two of them on my house and they work great. my neighbor has one that he has hooked up to a an external loud speaker, its pretty f***ing loud and when it goes off it emits a siren noise. i will definately be enough to draw some attention. you may also want to contact a security company and see if you can get an evaluation and some tips to make your home less penetrable

What's the best surveillance camera system for home security?

brittany

...preferably something not really expensive but decent, and with motion detector (and night vision)?

Answer
Hello,

A good camera system is available but you need to decide what areas you want to cover. Did you just want to watch outside or inside too? Just the doors or the driveway and the backyard. Camera systems can be a waste of money if you don't have them on and recording.
You need to do a site survey as well , go ahead and walk around the outside of the house, where would you try to get in? Are there woods behind the house?

A good thief has no problem driving up your driveway and walking right in the house so your neighbors would not think anything of it. Placing the cameras to cover all the ways a person could walk up to the house is the most important thing, its better to spend a few dollars more today with extra cameras rather than pay the deductible on your insurance

An inexpensive system like this complete camera system http://www.spyville.com/svat-cv300-4ch-001.html will have all the features you want, like night vision and motion activation. This system will do that and record for months at a time and allow you to view the video remotely on the internet. in some cases you can even view on your Iphone or Smart phone like blackberry and droid.

good security camera system for home?

vs2009

I have a budget of max $300 for a good security camera system to monitor my backyard and front of the house, any suggestions?

Answer
You may have trouble finding a reliable and working camera system for only $300. I might suggest saving up a little more to add to your budget if at all possible. Good wireless cameras are going to run $180-$400+ for each camera. The ones you can buy at Wal-Mart or whatever don't work very well and are more trouble than they're worth.

You should check out either SafeMart or Home Security Store. Home Security Store is more like a "home depot" for alarm system equipment.

Here's a good article on camera systems and a link to a review of SafeMart. Hope this helps.

I am looking for an home security camera sytem that I could link with my tv on it's own channel.

Any suggestions?

Answer
You can do this a couple of different ways:

Method 1) Wireless cameras, transmitting to a Receiver. From the receiver run the signal into a modulator, which will output the video as an actual TV channel. You'd need to add the signal onto your video network using a splitter/combiner.

Method 2) Wireless cameras and receiver, and connect the output from the receiver to an unused video input on your TV. View the cameras by selecting the correct input using your TV remote. This is cheaper and simpler than Method 1.

Keep in mind that the first method using modulation can have problems. The quality of the pictures may be poor, due to interference from nearby channels on your TV network.

The second method is almost foolproof, since you're using the "raw" signal straight out of the receiver.

Good luck!

I want to install security cameras outside but my husband feels we should have a home security system.?

Czarina

What are the pros and cons of each?

Answer
First of all - Why do you wish to get a security system? Has your house been broke into, or violated in some way?

Or do you live near a "bad" neighborhood?

Well, let me be honest. If I wanted to break into your house, I wouldn't give a fuck about security system, or security cameras. It takes security systems 5 mins, at the min. to react to a break in, and it takes the cops 10 more on top of that to react. (They gotta make sure it wasn't a accident and such)

So I have 10-15mins (min) to snatch a grab and make a escape...

I like my chances. Even with the alarm blaring.
The camera...haha! I don't suggest it at all. No matter what, they wont do a damn thing, it'll just make you paranoid. It ain't gonna stop no one. And it wont help "find" anyone neither.

Get the alarm system, but if you really wanna make your house "safe"

Change your locks for all your doors outside - Theirs also a plate you can by that keeps the door steady even when being kicked. Change the window locks too. You can also by "storm" windows, with stronger glass, so its not easily broken into.

Your better off make your house "sound" then spending money on some damn system. Because if I can't kick the door down in the first go, I'm not wasting my time. The next house over might be a better score anyways.

Can you recommend a great home security camera system?

Bgirl9488

I would like to be able to hook it up to my computer system through my wireless network. Anything affordable out there?

Answer
"Affordable" means different things to different people.

All the IP or Network cameras will do what you want - remember, wireless is not totally accurate. The camera still needs a wire for power.

Do you need color? Night vision? How far does the night vision need to be?

Because the cams are on your LAN, they get assigned an IP address and you get to them through a browser on your computer. There is no "system" - it just depends if you want the computer to record the camera activities. IP cameras are typically more expensive than the analog cameras.

Another method is to get the wireless 2.4 GHz analog cameras and feed the video into a multi-channel DVR like
http://shop1.frys.com/search?cat=-45940&pType=pDisplay
Since the DVR would get assigned an IP address, then you access the DVR - not the individual cameras. Some of the DVRs require you to buy a hard drive, too - 250 gig or 500 gig HDDs are pretty cheap...

I am looking for an home security camera sytem that I could link with my tv on it's own channel.

Any suggestions?
Trying to stay below $400, I could do any wiring myself. I live in South Florida so it gets to be around 90 degrees on average. Just a standard resolution in color. Night vision would be a big plus but not needed. If it could be directed to the video input on a receiver that could work also. Would want it to store recordings.

Answer
Analog, composite video? There are lots.

On its own channel? Some RF modulators can be expensive, especially if you want to select the channel. Easier if you just use one of the other video inputs that are not in use.

What is your budget?
What resolution are you looking for?
Will the video need to be recorded and stored? If yes, what surveillance DVR are you looking at?
Only one camera?
Is night vision required? If yes, how far does the camera need to see in darkness?
Does the camera need to be outdoor rated?
Does it snow where you live? If yes, you may need a housing with a heater unit.
Does it get REALLY hot where you live? If yes, you might need a housing with a cooling system.
Is the video signal to be wired or wireless?
Is there power available where you plan to install the camera?
Is the camera going to stay in one position or is pan/tilt/zoom control required?

You have not provided enough information for anyone to provide you a good recommendation.

Install a home security camera?

Isabella D

I already have an alarm system at home. Should I still install a home security camera?

Answer
Yes, this is a great deterrence. The crook is more likely to pass you by and hit a less well defended home, just like a bonehead will look for an unlocked car to hot wire.

Also, if the camera is hooked up to a recording device, you stand a good chance of catching and convicting a burglar if a break-in does happen.

This link will explain your options.

What kind of security camera system should I buy to watch my house from a laptop?

I've heard-of a security camera system that I could watch my home from a laptop while at work. What company should I refer to get this setup, and will any laptop work?

Answer
Hello

Not all DVRs are created equal, in fact there are many options that offer varying performance much like the automobile industry. In the world of DVRs you can find the equivalent of a $10,000 Kia and a $350,000 Ferrari and everything in between. Both have 4 wheels and windshield but that where the similarities end, itâs under the hood that counts. Just like any other consumer electronic in the end you get what you pay for.

I suggest you buy a PC based DVR has they have more processing power and normally have a much smaller file size and offer more features then Standalone DVR's. I know many people buy a cheap standalone DVR, only to upgrade to a PC based in 6 months especially when they are using it to manage a store remotely. Also PC based allows you to record up to 64 cameras where a standalone will have a limit of 16.

Many people have the misconception that a PC-Based DVR is simply an off-the-shelf PC with video capture (encoder) cards, display (decoder) cards and some generic OEM software. A true DVR requires years of research and development to facilitate the seamless integration of both the hardware and software. DVRs are highly complex systems that must run 24/7, processing millions of images per day. This makes consumer-level hardware inadequate for DVRs which is why Ascendent uses custom-built PCs with performance-level hardware.

My personal favorite DVR is Ascendent X4 series: Ascendentâs Tri-Fusion Hybrid Platform allows for the creation of a true hybrid surveillance system by utilizing the advantages of Analog, Megapixel, and IP technologies for unparalleled customization and expandability. I am working on government projects and use Ascendent cameras and DVR because the offer superior performance and cost less then comparable brands like bosh, Honeywell and pelco.

The X4 also uses the latest H.264/SVC codec offer video substantially better quality,. While its file size sizes is 30% smaller than MPEG-4, 60% smaller than MPEG-2, and exponentially smaller than MJPEG.

File size is crucial to streaming because most DVRâs on the market record at real time performance (30FPS per channel) so on a 4CH is trying to send 120, 8CH 240, and a 16CH 480 images per second which requires way too much bandwidth even for the most extreme internet connections.

The smaller the files size the more images are able to be sent, and the faster they can be processed improving both FPS and speed. File size is the heart of any DVR and goes far beyond just its streaming capabilities, as it also determines the recording storage time, how much you can back up at once, how fast it renders and searches video. The file size of a DVR impacts the performance of the DVR in just about every aspect from speed to longevity and is often the most important spec of any DVR.

If you are buying a DVR and streaming is a high priority I suggest you ask for a demo and connect to the DVR to make sure it is able to stream fast enough for your needs. Most DVRs say they have remote viewing but it is often too slow and laggy to be of any use especially if it is a standalone. Some good DVR brands that I recommend are Bosch, Pelco, Honeywell and Ascendent. These brands are what security professionals use, Q-see, Swan and Lorex are only used in residential applications because they are sold by Tiger Direct, Spytown, Newegg, Sams Club, Costco and other retail outlets but are not used by any security professionals also their tech support rarely speaks English as their first language...

These brand manufacturers also have a complete line of CCTV cameras for any application from residential to military.

You should check out either SafeMart or Home Security Store. Home Security Store is more like a "home depot" for alarm system equipment.

Here's a good article on camera systems and a link to a review of SafeMart. Hope this helps.

I cant seem to find a home security camera system online that is windows 7 compatible, wireless, and USB connects to a PC. Looking to spend a few hundred dollars.

Answer
Hi there,

This one is $200 for 2 cameras + software, and is compatible up through Vista 32-bit which means it is very likely compatible with Windows 7 32-bit as well: http://www.q-see.com/products/security-product.php?ProductId=3

Click the 'Ask us a question' link to contact the manufacturer and see for yourself! Good luck :)
