I have been using a PC for my entire life and I am now considering making the switch to a MacBook Pro.

What is the compatability of files between the 2 systems and can I get the same applications on Mac that I would get on PC.

Really what I should be asking is 'Why should I buy a mac over a PC?'

There are really no reasons to buy a Mac over a PC, Here are reasons why not. And Mac OS X runs it's own software, not windows compat by default.

PC=Variety of specs, options, quality, prices, vendors, support
Mac=One vendor, limited options, still more expensive. Look below for more information..

Today, Macs use a subset of PC hardware. Why spend extra to get the same CPU chips, graphics cards and OS X isn't as secure as you think..

Now is a Mac worth buying for OS X?

I say: NO... for the following reasons...

ADVANTAGES WINDOWS :
Aprox 90% of the market is Windows and most PCs have windows already pre-installed.
1) Some websites require Internet Explorer, to run IE on Mac you really get ies4osx which is the Windows version of IE running really buggy and illegal if you don't have a legitimate copy of Windows.
2) Supports more devices (printers and other things you hook into the computer).
3) More business software/games
4) Want the dock on OS X (Mac)? google/yahoo rocketdock, objectdoc.
5) Used by businesses.

ADVANTAGES LINUX :
1) FREE (most versions are)
2) Install software by either 1) Synaptic Package Manager, 2) Add/Remove 3) Opening a .deb or .rpm file (depending on distribution)

Mac OS X was hacked in 2006 less than 30 minutes, and within 2 minutes in a contest in 2008, and within 10 seconds in 2009. In 2008, Linux and Vista were not hacked until another day when restrictions were lowered. Vista was next, and then Linux. In 2009 Windows 7 fell shortly after the Mac but Linux was unscathed.
Macs are standardized with Cameras, if your Mac gets hacked, the hacker can turn on your camera with more ease.

Mac OS X has viruses (and significantly on the rise), a friend of mine has a virused Mac. As more users use Macs, more viruses will come out for it. Especially when users think "they are safe".

Contrary to belief, Macs are not better quality. Apple also has been changing suppliers to try to "lower the price" and thus lowering quality. Even with the lower prices, Macs still cost more, they spend a higher percent of budget trying to make it look pretty, and marketing.

Sample of problems: Overheating Macbooks, OS X- not responding to keyboard, some units with 16bit screens, etc. Apple statistics are misleading since Mac users with problem machines are more likely to go out and buy a new computer than PC users. Apple is lowering prices which means you can expect lower quality than in the past. Apple had switched the manufacturers producing parts. OS X also has problems slowing down.

Repairs are more expensive than PCs since the IMac, Mac Mini are compact units, and Apple charges a premium for their services. Some repairs can be done by another repair service but the compact design of the computer causes problems.
With an IMac, if the problem is with the monitor, the whole computer would have to be brought in.
IMac and Mac mini lack expansion.

PLEASE NOTE: I compare Apple Mac's vs Dells best deal. If you really want an all-in one the Dell all-in-one has more ram, wireless keyboard and mouse and equivalent to $400 for free making the Imac still more expensive when you matching specs. Personally I don't think the All-in-Ones are a good choice, and consider them overpriced, lack expandability and repairs both more expensive and require the entire computer.

PS: Apple knows that they need to make Macintosh look different than PC so all Macs except the Mac Pro will not have a tower option. Apple's low end lacks expandability but it makes the Mac "look different", if Mac had a tower for low-end, more people would realize the similarities between the two.

I have never used Mac but I've heard many times that one big advantage of Macs over Windows PCs is that Macs do not get infected with viruses so I don't have to buy anti-virus software like I do with my PC. Is that true? Why is it that Macs are immune to computer viruses?

95% of cameras and DVR will not allow you to view them with the I phone or other smart phones.

Does Mac have a system restore function like a PC?

My Mac system recently updated itself and now when I connect my digital camera, it won't show up on the desktop. It worked fine yesterday, and the only change was the new software that came from Apple, which the computer initiated itself.

Iphoto does open when I plug the camera in, and it does recognize the camera, but if I hit download, Iphoto just freezes.

Usually to copy photos to the computer, I would plug the camera in, double click on the camera icon that pops up, and just drag the photos to the folder where I wanted them, but now the icon doesn't appear.

PCs have that system restore function, but I don't know how to do that on a Mac.

The biggest reason why Windows needs system restore is the registry. Nothing wacks out Windows more than a flipped out registry. Since Mac OS doesn't have a registry, there is very little need for a restore program.

But restore is not the core issue here. Camera is the core issue. The problem you have is likely caused by a corrupt camera driver. The update could have unintentionally blasted the driver but it is not a typical result of a Mac OS update. But you have to consider that the Software Updates program not only finds Apple software but also other brands of software. It is possible for the Software Updates to have connected to the ... I'm not seeing the brand of camera, Kodak, Sony, Minotla??? web site and got an update for the camera driver. Maybe that update is faulty or the installation of that update was not completely fine.

If you have a card reader, just take the card out of the camera and try it in the card reader. The card reader needs no driver so it should just work. If the card reader doesn't work, something may have happened to the Apple software for USB connection. In that case, run the updater again. If you don't know what updates were installed, open System Preferences > Software Updates. Then select the "Installed Updates" tab. There will be a list of updates and the dates. Either a security update or an OS X update could be responsible for USB since it is a network connection.

I’m looking for a good security/spy camera that can record onto a hard drive, and that has night vision, etc.?

Iâm going on holiday in a few days and I thought it would be a good idea to get one of those cameras, since thereâs been a lot of housebreaking recently.

Hereâs what I need:

- It should be able to be outdoor, eventually under the rain

- It should have a good night vision, to recognize number plates

- It should be all digital, and be able to record onto a hard drive as long as 2 weeks or more

- It would be cool if I would be able to check whatâs going on via WLAN for example. I saw some cameras that have WLAN, and you can see whatâs happening via your iPhone or your browser. The thing is, those I found needed Internet Explorer or stuff like that⦠I need something Apple compatible.


Also, I was thinking of getting more than just one. How can I record them all onto a hard drive? Do I need to create different folders for each camera on the hard drive, and then select this folder as the recording destination for each of them?


Iâm pretty new to this and itâs all a bit complicated for me⦠also I find thereâs way too much choice.


And the price of course: The cheaper the better, but I donât want something that wonât work anymore after a week of course!

You need cameras to be "weatherproof" so that they can be placed outside.
You want to get cameras with "Infrared" so that it has night vision and you may want to get them with "600-700TV lines" so that it recognizes faces and license plates.
You need a DVR with a hard drive installed. You wont know what hard drive size you need until you decide how many cameras you want on the system and if you want it to be recording 24 hours or set it on motion detection. That will determine how much space you need to record for at least 2 weeks before it overwrites itself.
Most systems now a days can be view remotely via pc, mac, and smart phone.
I recommend http://cctvdirectbuy.com they are really great and have low prices but the work with you to find the best system for you.

you don't want to sue wireless for a number of reason listed bellow.

if you want to view your cameras from any computer just get a DVr with good remote connection then you can connect to it from anywhere that has internet.


I recommend going with a PC based DVR but if you don't want to spend the money I suggest Ascendent's AVP-4120 DVR or Pelco's DX-4000 as they will allow you to view all your cameras instantly from anywhere in the world using either IE. The AVP-8240DVDUSB will also allow MAC platforms as well as PC to remotely view cameras and it uses the new H.264 codec but no standalone will offer the video streaming or performance a good PC based DVR will.

if you want to view your cameras from any computer just get a DVr with good remote connection then you can connect to it from anywhere that has internet.


I recommend going with a PC based DVR but if you don't want to spend the money I suggest Ascendent's AVP-4120 DVR or Pelco's DX-4000 as they will allow you to view all your cameras instantly from anywhere in the world using either IE. The AVP-8240DVDUSB will also allow MAC platforms as well as PC to remotely view cameras and it uses the new H.264 codec but no standalone will offer the video streaming or performance a good PC based DVR will.

I have been using a PC for my entire life and I am now considering making the switch to a MacBook Pro.

What is the compatability of files between the 2 systems and can I get the same applications on Mac that I would get on PC.

Is there such thing as a video security system I can buy and install myself that transmits to my PC at home?

You do not need to subscribe to any service as long as you have internet and know the user name and password of your DVR you should be able to connect to from anywhere.

I suggest you buy a PC based DVR has they have more processing power and normally have a much smaller file size and offer more features then Standalone DVR's. I know many people buy a cheap standalone DVR, only to upgrade to a PC based in 6 months especially when they are using it to manage a store remotely. Also PC based allows you to record up to 64 cameras where a standalone will have a limit of 16.

File size is crucial to streaming because most DVRâs on the market record at real time performance (30FPS per channel) so on a 4CH is trying to send 120, 8CH 240, and a 16CH 480 images per second which requires way too much bandwidth even for the most extreme internet connections.

The smaller the files size the more images are able to be sent, and the faster they can be processed improving both FPS and speed. File size is the heart of any DVR and goes far beyond just its streaming capabilities, as it also determines the recording storage time, how much you can back up at once, how fast it renders and searches video. The file size of a DVR impacts the performance of the DVR in just about every aspect from speed to longevity and is often the most important spec of any DVR.

If you are buying a DVR and streaming is a high priority I suggest you ask for a demo and connect to the DVR to make sure it is able to stream fast enough for your needs. Most DVRs say they have remote viewing but it is often too slow and laggy to be of any use especially if it is a standalone. Some good DVR brands that I recommend are Bosch, Pelco, Honeywell and Ascendent. These brands are what security professionals use, Q-see, Swan and Lorex are only used in residential applications because they are sold by Tiger Direct, Newegg, Sams Club, Costco and other retail outlets but are not used by any security professionals also their tech support rarely speaks English as their first language...

I have done projects that required cameras to stream over satellite and cellular networks and the only DVR that could provide the video streaming was Ascendent Technology Groupâs X3 DVR. How long will the webcam on my mac record for?

I have a webcam built into my mac pro, of course.
If I want to leave my laptop open and have the video camera running 24/7 is that possible? when the screen goes black or the laptop automatically "sleeps" will the webcam turn off or will it keep going? if it will turn off, is there a setting i can use to fix this?

when your computer shuts down or goes to sleep, the webcam will automatically turn off as well. but if you don't mind keeping your mac on all the time, then you can go to System Preferences->Energy and put the display and computer NEVER to sleep, and of course make sure you have your power cord plugged in all the time. But there's one thing to keep in mind though, if you are having the video camera running 7/24 for security reason, then I shall assume you are saving the recoding file as well, so don't forget to check if you have enough hard disk space.

you don't want to sue wireless for a number of reason listed bellow.

if you want to view your cameras from any computer just get a DVr with good remote connection then you can connect to it from anywhere that has internet.


I recommend going with a PC based DVR but if you don't want to spend the money I suggest Ascendent's AVP-4120 DVR or Pelco's DX-4000 as they will allow you to view all your cameras instantly from anywhere in the world using either IE. The AVP-8240DVDUSB will also allow MAC platforms as well as PC to remotely view cameras and it uses the new H.264 codec but no standalone will offer the video streaming or performance a good PC based DVR will.

In the world of CCTV you can find the equivalent of a $2,000 golf cart and a $350,000 Ferrari and everything in between. A true DVR and camera require years of research and development to facilitate the seamless integration of both the hardware and software. DVRs are highly complex systems that must run 24/7, processing millions of images per day and are one of the few products that canât be made both well and cheaply. Cheap and inexpensive products like Q-see, X10, Swan, Lorex, and other low grade DVRâs and cameras sold by Tiger Direct, Newegg, radio shack Sams Club, are not used by any security professional and should only be used by hobbyists.

To be honest the "frys" products are Garbage and are not used by anyone who has worked with CCTV or security products. I They are poor quality especially for IR cameras, due to low quality material, low S/N ratio, and low grade CCD image chips.

Also as far as night vision or IR cameras go most do not give good images in the dark. Many companies claim good night vision but there are only a handful of brands who give night vision over 30 feet out doors. normally if a cameras is rated 150 feet of IR it will give you ok images at 30 feet at night and good images at about 20 if rated for 60 feet you might get 15 indoors and will be useless outdoors.

Now one option for wireless is using commercial IP radios which are basically wireless routers on steroids and can offer distances up to 40km of wireless with military encryption, this is not a cheap solution but neither is digging a trench. using these radios not only give you a security infrastructure but also communications infrastructures as well for internet and other purposes (LAN network)

The company I recommend for CCTV products is Ascendent Technology Group they have a large product line and offer better products then Pelco Honeywell and Bosch and are about %20 cheaper and in my opinion have the best IR outdoor camera line up.

In the end you want to buy your DVR from a Brand name DVR manufacture

You cant view cameras unless you are give permission CCTV Closed Circuit TV (note the closed circuit)

I would like to buy a small security camera so I can monitor my home (indoor) when I'm away in a different state. I already have Skype and a camera hooked up an am online. I do not leave my computer on 24/7; I shut it off at night. What all do I need? can I use the camera I have now or do I need to buy a 'security' camera?
