We need a security camera for our home. When away, how does live monerting work through your iPhone or Android ? We live our little dog alone all day and would like to be able to check on him by this security camera too. Do you have to have a internet hookup, or phone hook up, how does it work to be able to broadcast that video to your iPhone or Droid?

The most important thing to have, when setting up an internet-based camera (called an IP camera), is to have a good broadband (non-dialup, always on) internet connection at your house. It doesn't have to be high-speed cable modem (from your cable company) or fiber-optic (like Verizon FiOS or ATT U-verse), but at least a DSL-line from your phone company.

The IP cameras (or even a webcam connected to one of your computers) need to be connected to a home "network" or LAN (Local Area Network) via either WiFi --for wireless cams-- or using regular Ethernet (Cat5 or Cat6) cables to an internet router. If you just plan on having one camera connected to your PC, then you could use the computer as the "router", but routers are cheap ($20-$40 if you shop wisely) and simple to set up.

Your iPhone or Android device would simply use a web browser to log onto your home network, using an IP address & password, and you would watch your camera just like watching a YouTube feed, except that it would be "live".

I am confused, I've been comparing a lot of security camera systems on different websites and biggest difference I see is in price. 8 camera system from $700 to $5000, 16 camera from $1300 to $10,000 and they all do same things according to description. Anyone ran into this?

I'm professional cctv installer. Some websites are just trying to rip you off saying they have best stuff and they are using their own model number, so you can't find it anywhere else online. Here is some good reading about it, pretty good cctv tutorial for first time buyers

What can you record with a home security camera?

I wanted to do this last summer, when we had a drug dealer doing deals right outside my kitchen window. Luckily he is gone now. But I would still like to place security camera around my apartment to record any other illegal acts, such as vandalism. My main concern is invading the privacy of someone that is not doing anything wrong. My landlord already has the main entrances to our building covered, but I would like to watch out for the common areas, such as wehre the drug deals took place.
I live in Upstate NY.

The best suggestion is to contact the local police. Reason being, they are the ones who would end up getting the video.
One major thing you do need to consider is the quality of the recorded images. Camera's are not like the human eye, they do have weaknesses, particularly the discount spy store or hardware store variety. I have a video surveillance section on my website at http://www.keepsafesystems.ca Feel free to check it out as it does have quite abit of techincal info on how camera's and recorders work. After all, if the images are crap and the crackhead gets away, you just wasted your money on camera's.

Back to the legality issue. Human rights groups are constantly bickering about public video surveillance. In fact, a town around here wanted to have camera's installed in high crime area's and was refused. However, traffic camera's are allowed and are everywhere... difference being the recording. If you have a sign which states "your images are being recorded and will be used in criminal prosecution." Of course, like I said, talk to your local police or look for privacy commissioner in your area. Another thought would be, there should be nothing stopping you from having a camera recording activity in your appartment... maybe looking at a window. nudge nudge wink wink

What electrical wire to use for 12V outdoor security cameras?

I am going to be installing security cameras at my business. The video is sent wirelessly to the receiver, but each camera needs to be wired for power. All it says on the website is 12V power. The transformer comes with the DVR and cameras. There will be some cable with it to power the DVR. The cameras are wireless so you don't need to worry about wiring them. Should be a simple setup and nice system.

What is the best camera for streaming video on a website for cost and functionality?

Here is what I want to do: I have a contract to create a website for someone who wants to have 24-hour streaming live video of a bridge construction site. The camera that my client has is a security camera and won't work for this project, so I have to find a new one. I would prefer something that is plug-and-play or easy to set up. It would probably be set up outdoors, though a cover could be built and it would need to be able to have some zoom capability. What camera would be the best solution for both cost and functionality? We've found Milestone's Xprotect program to be the most flexible solution for all of our surveillance camera installs because it isn't proprietary or locked into any specific brand of camera. It's got a ton of features, plus I think at the moment they are still having a promotion where you can download the single-camera licence for free.

They also just released an "Enterprise" version which you pay the licence for on a per-camera basis instead of a 4-camera licence or something minimum when you don't have that many cameras. Check out their website to see if the promotion is still running.

Where to find a Infrared/ Night vision camera?

I need help on trying to find a night vision camera/recorder. Not the security cameras that you can attach to your house. A portable one so you can record at night with out shining a flashlight.
Everywhere I search it's always a security camera.

An ordinary, consumer videocam -even one with so-called enhanced night shot capability- doesn't compare with a true night vision device when it comes to seeing in the dark. For that you need a dedicated night vision device which gives you a green or black/white image and lets you identify objects at night illuminated by nothing more than moon or starlight, or an invisible infrared light source.

There are a few (digital) night vision monoculars that lets you also record what you see, such as the Pulsar 550R (with built-in recording device) or the Yukon NV ranger (to which you can attach a small digital video recording unit). However, they do come at a price.

Another solution might be a good conventional night vision device such as the Yukon Exelon and an inexpensive pocket cam attached to the eyepiece, which can yield surprisingly good results. Don't expect HD quality though, it simply isn't available in true night vision devices.
