Need details about Web Cams v/s Security cameras?

sam

I have a very little shop and for the purpose of recording the activities of shop lifting by customers, I want to install security camera. My question is can a simple web cam attached to my computer will do the work for me or I will have to install a CCTV camera. What is difference between the two and how much hard disk space is used in 24 hours recording. Any other thing which you think that I should keep in mind.

Answer
Security cameras generally have lenses that have a wider field of view than the typical web cam, making them more suitable for surveillance purposes. Security cameras also usually have higher resolution which translates into better picture quality.

But the biggest difference is the way that the cameras can handle lighting conditions. A good security camera will be equipped with an auto-iris lens, which allows it to automatically adjust to changing light conditions. A good security camera will also have back lighting compensation which prevents the camera from being blinded when there is a source of bright light in the scene.

Generally, a security camera would be a better choice for surveillance in your store if you are serious about recording activities of shoplifters.

Recording time is effected by many things, including camera resolution, picture size, frame rate, and type of recording format used (MPEG-4, H.264, etc). Figure out what types of cameras and video recording software you will be using, and then consult the camera/software documentation to see what your disk storage requirements will be.

Also, there are many online sellers of security cameras and video recorders, and many of these have calculators that you can use to figure out how much disk space you will need.

Security cameras and kissing?

Kaitlyn

My school has security cameras and me and my bf wanna kiss. Where do we do it without being caught? If my mom found out I would be dead!

Answer
All security cameras have a limited viewing area, a limited range. It should not be that hard to find areas they can not see. Doorways, empty rooms, the janitor's closet, sometimes the camera can't see right under itself, if there are too many people between you and the camera.
Get a look at the monitors, the tv screens that show what the camera can see. That will give you an idea what the cameras can actually see, that will help you understand what you can do. There are aways blind spots, areas not covered.

Security Cameras, no need for power adaptor?

braveheart

Were looking for a security camera system that is not only wireless but also does not require a wall outlet for it to be plugged into. does a camera like that exist out there?

Answer
Wireless security cameras are generally a part of any quality home security system. They provide more substantial protection than motion detectors, are less annoying than elaborate alarm systems, and provide additional benefits associated with video surveillance. The best security systems almost always employ multiple home security features, but if you're trying to get the most for your money, a few, well-placed, wireless security cameras are a great way to get a lot from a single security feature. http://www.homesecuritycontrol.com/security-cameras.php

Best security camera?

What is the best security camera for the home security?

A) IP camera
B) Dome Camera

http://www.aditgroup.com/CCTV-Camera.html

Answer
It depends on the requirements. But your question is confusing. IP (Internet Protocol) is merely the network connection the camera has. Usually, an IP camera - for home use - is not "outdoor rated". Some are... Usually, the IP camera has nowhere to store the video, so a video server or dedicated computer is required if the video needs to be stored.

A "dome camera" is a camera in a dome. It can be IP or analog. If it is an IP camera, then the above paragraph applies. If it is an analog camera, it will need some sort of connectivity to a DVR for video storage and the DVR can be connected to the computer network.

We don't know:
what computer network might be available;
whether you need outdoor rated cameras;
how long - if at all - the video storage needs to be;
whether computer or smartphone access is needed... and lots more.

Without this information, selecting *best* is impossible.

MY RIGHT TO A SECURITY CAMERA?

MY RIGHT TO A SECURITY CAMERA?

I LIVE IN OAKLAND, AND i PUT A SECURITY CAMERA UP OUTSIDE MY UNIT FACING THE DRIVEWAY AND STREET, i WAS INSTRUCTED BY MY LANDLORD TO REMOVE THE CAMERA.

I FEEL THAT IS SHOULD BE MY RIGHT TO PROTECT MYSELF AS A FEMALE LIVING ALONE, THIS IS SURPRISING TO ME AND i WOULD LIKE TO PUT THE CAMERA BACK UP AS SOON AS i FIND OUT WHAT THE LAW IS IN REGARDS TO THIS ISSUE, ANYONE KNOW?

GUESS IF THE CAMERA IS ILLEGAL, I SHOULD GO OUT AND GET MYSELF A GUN!

Answer
The issue as I read it from your question and from the discussion board isn't about the legality of the security camera, but rather about what you can do in the "public" area of your apartment building. Sadly for you, the answer is, "more or less whatever your landlord tells you". You don't own the stairwells, front door, or walk-up to your apartment; your landlord does.

Flip things around to his perspective: you're now responsible for the buildings and grounds, as well as attracting tenants, and without consulting you suddenly there appears a security camera right next to the front door. This is your property. Maybe you don't like the look of it--it's hostile and threatening, and you're afraid that it will put off possible tenants. Maybe you're offended that the tenant thought she could just put something up without consulting you--what's next, she repaints the front door? Whatever the reason, this is your property, and unless you've been giving out pretty weird leases, you control what goes on everywhere on the property except the actual rented units. It's your call.

My suggestion is that you not get confrontational. Your landlord holds all the cards here: he can make you take it down just because it's sunny out and the last digit of your zip code is three. If you owned a house and your neighbor put a security camera on your house looking at his yard, you could do the exact same thing, and sue him to boot. Your rental agreement covers only the inside of your apartment, so you're negotiating from the weaker position here. Your advantage: the camera is already up. Taking it down requires work, an alteration to the new status quo. So I advise that you politely approach your landlord, ask to talk to him about the camera, and explain why you felt it was necessary. Tell him that, in casual conversation with your neighbors, none of them had expressed dismay at it. You'll of course take it down if he feels strongly about it, but you think it could also act as a deterrent for acts of crime and vandalism--play up the good things about the camera. If he is concerned that one resident seems to have a position of power over the others, point out that the others don't mind, and that you're acting as an unpaid security guard. Offer to provide him the tapes whenever he asks. Bottom line: be as accomodating as you possibly can, play up the positives, and immediately follow up the negatives with solutions that re-emphasize the positives. You still may lose, but I think your chances are better this way than if you go to him with a signed petition, which seems combative and challenges his legitimate authority in the matter.

I put up a question to this effect at www.lawguru.com, under the Landlord/Tenant section in California. It should be addressed by a lawyer within the next week or two, so check back. It hasn't been posted yet, or I'd link to it here. Subject is, "Resident-installed security camera OK outside apartment?"

===Wireless security camera???

TampaBay

I am looking for a wireless security camera system (3-4 cameras). It must be color, not 2.4GHz (because I have 2.4GHz router, it may interfere).
Anyone have any recommendation for it?
My goal is to be able to monitor my house while I away (at work) and able to see it online and records it to my computer hard drives.

Answer
OK here is a scenario. If someone breaks into your home and steals your computer... Or what if your computer crashed... no this never happens with Windows :P

There are many computer video card systems out there, however you may want to consider a separate DVR (Digital Video recorder). There are many models out there but if you are looking for usable image quality you need to be careful about the unit you choose.

As for wireless camera's? Why? Image quality wise you can't beat hardwire. It may look good on a colour monitor but if you compare the two next to each other you will notice major differences in facial details etc. Of course that being said, if you are just doing it for entertainment and basic info I wouldn't worry about the quality.

When it comes to quality lens and camera selection is the most important factor. After all if you have crappy camera's the best DVR will not make a difference. The same goes for a DVR if the camera's are great but the compression on the DVR results in crap images, why waste your money on a DVR?

I know this info is abit choppy, but I am writing this on my way out the door. There is more detailed information on my website at www.keepsafesystems.ca. It should help you with some surveillance questions you may have.

How does a Security Camera work?

Taufan

Answer
Security cameras are useful in improving the safety of residential and business buildings. Home security camera systems have gained phenomenal popularity over the years. With spectacularly enhanced digital imagery and moderate working costs, the use of security cameras has become quite widespread. The use of security camera systems is no longer limited to banks or department stores but is increasingly being used for residential security also.

Home security camera systems let you keep track of children at play and simultaneously can keep an eye on the front door. They vary in their appropriateness and operation, and it is imperative that the proper selection is made based on individual requirements to ensure their effectiveness.

While choosing a home security camera system you must decide on the area to be observed, and the camera should be located at a suitable distance in order to focus on the preferred area. In case there is a need to mount the camera on a wall or structure, a mounting bracket can be placed at the predetermined spot, and the position of mounting screws can be indicated.

While opting for a wired system, the camera and monitor should be connected in accordance with instructions. Care should be taken to not expose the wiring, so the home security system cannot be sabotaged. And always remember to keep these gadgets out of reach of children.

Another crucial issue that should also be given adequate importance is the number of cameras that one would like to employ in the home security camera system. Some systems have room for only one or two, whereas other systems offer more. There are also camera systems which incorporate microphones, allowing you to hear and see the required object at the same time.

Home Security Systems provides detailed information on Home Security Systems, Wireless Home Security Systems, Home Security Alarm Systems, Home Security Camera Systems and more. Home Security Systems is affiliated with Wireless Home Security Systems.

Del Boy

Do real security cameras have a red light continually flashing?

Answer
Del Boy,
Those cameras are sold at so many place that a thief would know the difference. Even someone who is not a thief could probably tell. I could and I am not that familiar with security cameras.
I bought one and the first night I put it up someone ripped it right down and left it sitting by my front door so it didn't fool anybody much. Mine even moved when the person moved and they still ripped it down!

What is your opinion about security cameras in public places?

maddie318

Many people don't like the fact that the United States government installs security cameras in public places calling it invasion of privacy. What is your opinion on this subject?

Answer
If you are not doing anything wrong... you have nothing to hide.

Even though we had security cameras that caught the 9/11 hijackers on camera... that did not stop them in the end... so just cause there are cameras there doesn't mean people are actually paying attention.

I think that cameras should be where they are needed and they should be watched 24/7 all the time, otherwise they serve no purpose.

How do I study the pros and cons of having security cameras installed in preschool classrooms?

camille

I am about to make my thesis for my graduate program. I noticed the trend now in early childhood settings of having security cameras installed in preschool classrooms and the parents can view them. There are pros and cons to this and I would like to know if the pros outweighs the cons. Thank you.

Answer
I hear about security cameras in daycare facilities, but not a traditional preschool program. New parents want to make sure their child is happy and taken cared of the 1st years of their lives.

I agree with daycare programs if the daycare owners agree to this.

Though having it in a classroom is not a good choice.

(Preschool between the ages newborn to 3 years old) YES
(Preschool between 3 to 5 years old) NO

In Minnesota, is it legal to set up hidden security cameras in my own home?

GuysMyDog

I have renters some of which may be theives. I also live in this house and own it. Is it legal for me to put invisible unknown security cameras in common areas (not bathrooms or bedrooms) with the risk that it may pick up a conversation that I was not personally privy to?

Answer
Rules and Regulations For a Hidden Camera
If you are planning to fit a supervision camera in your residence or in your working area it is wise to study your states privacy rule and regulations and consider area where you may possibly be in violation, which might consequence in huge fines and/or a prison sentence. It is illegal to set up secret or hidden security cameras in part which is considered to be a confidential place.

United States privacy rules classify a secretive place as everyplace one is capable of is assumed to be out of harm's way from unlawful surveillance. This comprises of areas such as locker rooms, changing stalls, restrooms, bedrooms and lodge rooms.

This means that you cannot put in a hidden security camera or voice recording or hearing devices in these areas without prior written down authorization from the person. State regulation regarding security cameras is not standardized across the board.

Merely a very few in number of them have regulation concerning hidden camera setting up. Some places like California, Delaware, Georgia, Hawaii, Alabama, Arkansas, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Kansas and Utah.

I've always wondered in those big houses how often people check their security cameras at home, if they have them. Is it just when your house is burglarized or do you do it after every dinner party?

Answer
Probably in big houses with a lot of security cameras they have a DVR security system set up that records all the video cameras. With those computerized systems they can look at what different cameras recorded at different times.

They can also have it set up to receive cell phone alerts when a motion detector on a camera detects movement in a certain area. The cameras can also be viewed from a computer at another location.
