Its funny how regular problem-free TV easily evolves into HD but security cameras ,which well.. only identify perpetrators and provide solid evidence in crime cases, keep the same useless pixelated image. Entertainment over Justice?

The pixilated cameras they you see in 7-11's on the news are junk. There are far better security cameras available. The ones we have do not get pixelated images like that, even at night. I think the benefits of HD for many security applications are small compared to the cost factor, not to mention the nightmare there would be with storage, etc. There are however many HD security cameras available. In fact, there are many security cameras with 8+ megapixels (much larger than HD).

May be you bought the wrong one. For the image quality, it depends on several elements, like camera,how far u watch etc.

would having security cameras in HD help catch more criminals? It seems like every video I see on the news with security cameras is blurry and you can't make anything out of the faces. Do the current security cameras actually work very well?

A security system is only as good as the camera, and you get what you pay for. Most HD cameras run around $400 each, so a major chain store or bank is looking at hundreds of thousands and even millions of dollars in cameras to cover all their businesses. As a result, they buy cheaper cameras, and hope to "catch them in the act"

I would like to build a cheap DIY security camera. there has been an increase in crime (vehicle break-ins, etc.) in the past few weeks in my neighborhood. I want build a security camera system to keep watch over my truck at night. I would like it to have the following features:
---motion detection or manual start (motion detection would be the ideal case but manual start seems to be alot simpler and cheaper)
---long record time (bare minimum of 5 hours)
---good quality in low light setting
---store on to a usb flashdrive or sd card (mainly just want to store and/or watch the videos if necessary)
---relatively small if possible

the cheaper and simpler the better. I dont necessarily have a budget but would like to keep it halfway cheap. any tips, comments, videos, links would be greatly appreciated! thanks to all!
Hey guys thanks a lot for your input! it is greatly appreciated! i think i am going to go the webcam route. but the location i will be putting the camera will be about 100 or so yards from my computer. i looked into wireless transmitter/recievers but the good sets were pretty expensive. i also looked into wireless webcams but idk if they will reach that distance? maybe with a patch antenna of some sort? and is there any possible way to interface the webcam to store its videos to a usb flash drive or sd card? thanks again guys i really appreciate it!

A lot of people, including myself, use HD webcams. Good ones can be found for less than a hundred bucks, and decent ones near 50 dollars. You can purchase a USB extension cable for about 30 dollars and run the camera from your computer to the location you want it. There's a program called Dorgem that will allow you to save images from the camera to your hard drive. You can set it up for motion detection, or to capture images at a certain duration. The pictures are in a folder on your hard drive, so you can transfer them if needed. You can also use any movie making software to run the pictures in succession like a time-lapse movie. Or you can also use My Webcam Broadcaster. It's a free online webcam streaming service that you can access your webcam from anywhere there's an internet connection. There's even an app for that:)

How Good Are School Security Cameras? Are They HD?

I have this problem at school with this kid who stole my ipod touch 4g, and so I went down to the office to report it and now they're going to look at the security cameras to see who actually stole it. So I'm just wondering, like are the cameras in the school actually good like HD? Or are they just normal quality? I really hope they're HD so they can see who actually took my ipod!! :( It cost a lot too and my parents bought so I am kinda worried...

all depends on the school and the state. many schools are stuck accepting a "lowest-bid" offer, which could be nearly useless.

in many cases, the school doesn't want the police involved, so they may just approach the guilty student and give them the opportunity to "turn it in at the office - no questions asked".

-- or if was faculty/ staff.. they don't want newspapers making it bad for the school.

If you don't get a response in a day or two, get your parents, and report it to the police.
Tell them who and when you reported it to in the office, and what - if any results they have shared with you.

A lot of places have cameras, but because of "policies" or "privacy/security concerns".. they aren't going to tell you what they can or cannot see. If the school is like that, your only shot at getting action is when the police get involved.
Sometimes the policies are legitimate, other times they are abused to make it hard to prosecute favored people.

Cheap and stealthy security camera for Apartment?

I'm going back to college and I'm planning to bring my toys - desktop, computer monitors, recording monitors, hd webcam, guitars, and mixer - to my apartment because I'm going to need them for recording music.

Can anybody suggest a cheap security system where
1) I can get an alert on my phone if somebody enters my room (motion sensored cameras I guess)
2) Save the file online so I can retrieve them from any computers.

Hi There - you can use your HD webcam as part of the solution. Alternatively, purchase an Axis M-Series IP camera which doesn't need to be connected to a PC at all times - Amazon sells these and they retail for ~$150.

Either way, once you decide on a camera, I'd recommend a simple cloud video monitoring tool. I use Camcloud myself, it meets both of your requirements for alerts and saving recorded events in the cloud. It can also use your existing HD webcam and actually turns it into a motion sensing camera. They have free and paid plans.

The Logitech C615 Webcam has a built-in mic. It is generally used for the voice conversation portion of the video call.

The smaller the files size the more images that are able to be sent and the faster they can be processed improving both FPS and speed. Most routers are not designed to handle IP cameras they have enough bandwidth but they are not able to process the amounts of commands. (9 IP cameras 30FP is 230 instructions per second) standard routers have enough bandwidth (up to 1GB) but cant handle the amount of tasks (instructions) so frames get dropped latency is introduced effectiveness of other devices such as POS, printers and data storage are affected and compromised.


IP does have applications and in some cases IP cameras are the only way to do a project but I would estimate that for 95% of applications analog is cheaper and higher performance with a lower cost of ownership and better reliability.

How can you combine the channels of 3 different TV sources into one set of channels via coaxial cable?

I have seen this done so I know it is very possible.

I want security cameras on a TV channel, cable TV channels, and antenna channels, all mixed into one signal that can be split up so every TV in the house can access everything by just surfing the channels.

Mixing security (ch 3 or Ch. 4) with EITHER Cable or Antenna is simple. Without two tuners on each TV - one for cable and one for antenna you can't even mix them without a need for a channel rescan. They use different frequencies, so a TV will have to constantly rescan every time you switch a source.

However, most satellite HD set-top boxes (and probably cable) allow you to connect an antenna to the set-top box, so you can access bot antenna and satellite via one box. In that case, you only need to mix the security channel (Ch. 3 or 4) with the antenna signal and you are all set.

How come security cameras are so glitchy and pixilated?

With HD cameras readily available, why are the majority of these cameras using the old VHS system. Isn't there a way to make it digital and condense the video size?

For the same reason that the intercom at drive threw fast food restaurants have such terrible sound. Because they are too cheap to buy better stuff.
And because they try to record too much. If they would just record one day at a time and then delete, or only record when movement is detected, then they could record at a higher level of quality.
If you want to get a cheap security recording system, buy a used TiVo with a open account and you can have it record at a very great rate for all day long. And just hook up a video camera from the thrift store.
