minimal notebook for surfing and itunes that has wifi. It's for a 12 year old girl. Mac or PC?

Capricious

What is the minimal amount. I connect broadband via wifi, so I need that built in. Just a CD and ability to connect external drive if no CD/DVD. HD needs to be enough for OS and a little music and pictures, but they are not required. She just goes to facebook and surfs. I want something that won't be slow because of the computer but because I have a 1.5 internet broadband connection. She will use it at coffee houses and bookstores.

Answer
1) Toshiba L305 http://explore.toshiba.com/laptops/satellite/L300 or 2) Dell Inspiron $599 or higher http://www.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/inspnnb_1525?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs
For laptops I prefer Toshiba for quality, but Dell for desktops..
Avoid the mac for the following reasons....

PC=Variety of specs, options, quality, prices, vendors, support
Mac=One vendor, limited options, still more expensive. Look below for more information..

Today, Macs use the same hardware as PCs. Why spend extra to get the same CPU chips, graphics cards and OS X isn't as secure as you think..

A number of PCs can also run OS X (Mac OS) http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=os+x+on+pc&btnG=Google+Search&aq=0&oq=os+x+on+ as well just that Apple makes it illegal in order to get Market share.. The reason why Mac can run native Windows is because it is using a subset of PC hardware,

If you decide to buy a Mac for running Windows, you will still have to get the same virus/spyware protection, and run into the same issues as a regular PC.

Now is a Mac worth buying for OS X?

I say: NO... for the following reasons...

ADVANTAGES WINDOWS :
Aprox 90% of the market is Windows and most PCs have windows already pre-installed.
1) Some websites require Internet Explorer, to run IE on Mac you really get ies4osx which is the Windows version of IE running really buggy and illegal if you don't have a legitimate copy of Windows.
2) Supports devices (printers and other things you hook into the computer).
3) More business software/games
4) Want the dock on OS X (Mac)? google/yahoo rocketdock, objectdoc.
5) Used by businesses.

ADVANTAGES LINUX :
1) FREE (most versions are)
2) Install software by eitjher 1) Synaptic Package Manager, 2) Add/Remove 3) Opening a .deb or .rpm file (depending on distribution)
2) Like the Mac OS X effects? go yahoo/google COMPIZ FUSION which can do any cool effect a Mac can do and many ore....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N3gkX9HDfEE (there is no flickering when you use it like on the video, not sure why the person has the flicker)
3) Mac OS X Doc? google/yahoo Avant Window Navigator.Cairo Dock, http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x3rf5q_cairo-dock-mac-os-x-leopard-dock-on_tech
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p0hzi22g2DE
4) It is FASTERr/MORE SECURE to surf on the internet
5) Some Windows programs work with Wnehq/Crossover (also avail on Mac, but why pay $$$)

SECURITY
Mac OS X was hacked in 2006 less than 30 minutes, and within 2 minutes in a contest in 2008 . Linux and Vista were not hacked until another day when restrictions were lowered. Vista was next, and then Linux.
Macs are standardized with Cameras, if your Mac gets hacked, the hacker can turn on your camera with more ease.
Please Note: All OS's have vulnerabilities.

VIRUSES
Mac OS X has viruses (and significantly on the rise), a friend of mine has a virused Mac. As more users use Macs, more viruses will come out for it. Especially when users think "they are safe".

QUALITY/PROBLEMS
Contrary to belief, Macs are not better quality. Apple also has been changing suppliers to try to "lower the price" and thus lowering quality. Even with the lower prices, Macs still cost more, they spend a higher percent of budget trying to make it look pretty, and marketing.

Sample of problems: Overheating Macbooks, OS X- not responding to keyboard, some units with 16bit screens, etc. Apple statistics are misleading since Mac users with problem machines are more likely to go out and buy a new computer than PC users. Apple is lowering prices which means you can expect lower quality than in the past. Apple had switched the manufacturers producing parts. OS X also has problems slowing down.

Repairs are more expensive than PCs since the IMac, Mac Mini are compact units, and Apple charges a premium for their services. Some repairs can be done by another repair service but the compact design of the computer causes problems.
With an IMac, if the problem is with the monitor, the whole computer would have to be brought in.
IMac and Mac mini lack expansion.

PRICE
A similar equipped PC is much cheaper to purchase than Mac. Lets use Dell (but you can compare with another PC Brand if you like)

**(LAPTOP)
Dell Inspiron Laptop $849 dropped to $799
15" Screen
CPU: (upgrade to) 2.1GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Graphics: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100

Hard Drive: 320GB Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm
Optical Drive: Blu-ray Disc Combo (DVD+/-RW + BD-ROM) - WRITES DVDS,CDS, READS Blue-Ray Disks

Macbook $1349 just dropped to $1224

**(DESKTOP)

PLEASE NOTE: I compare Apple Mac's vs Dells best deal. If you really want an all-in one the Dell all-in-one has more ram, wireless keyboard and mouse and equivalent to $400 for free making the Imac still more expensive when you matching specs. Personally I don't think the All-in-Ones are a good choice, and consider them overpriced, lack expandability and repairs both more expensive and require the entire computer.

PS: Apple knows that they need to make Macintosh look different than PC so all Macs except the Mac Pro will not have a tower option. Apple's low end lacks expandability but it makes the Mac "look different", if Mac had a tower for low-end, more people would realize the similarities between the two.

Dell: (At The Moment) Specs Below costs $809
CPU: 2.4 GHZ Dell Inspiron QUAD (4 Processor) CORE
SCREEN: 20inch Screen
MEMORY: 3GB Ram
HARD DRIVE: 500 GB hard Drive
OPTICAL DRIVE: 16x DVD/CD Read/Writer
GRAPHICS: (upgrade to ) ATI Radeon HD 2400 PRO 128MB

The Mac Mini since it has no monitor, keyboard, mouse, very skimpy on options and setup and is not the best deal... The IMac is better price than the Mac Mini.

IMac ($1400)
CPU: 2.4 GHZ DUAL (2 Processor) CORE (SLOWER CPU)
SCREEN: 20inch Screen

wifi connection help ?

Ian Y

hello i have a mac os x leopard and if your familiar you know they have a built in wireless router ( i think belkin MIMO thats what comes up in my airport menu) and i receive wireless signals fine . but the thing is when ever some one calls i lose connection completely? i want to know before i get xbox live any help?

Answer
You probably have a 2.4GHz cordless phone...they're the cheapest and mose widely available. Classic symptom. A few cordless phones can select a specific channel but most jump around randomly to increase security (which stomps all over the computer signal)

Put your wireless router as high up as you can and as far from electrical and metal things as you can, that'll give you the best coverage. Try to put it in the middle of where you expect to be (usually the middle of the house). If you have 2.4GHz cordless phones you may want to replace them with 5.8GHz, 900MHz, or the new DECT6.0 phones that won't cause interference. Also, wireless video senders, or wireless cameras that run on 2.4GHz should be set to the farthest channel from your router (e.g. set video sender to 1 or A and put the router on channel 11).

Using public network IP address and changed MAC address...?

ShaqM

I'm doing a project on maintaining security and disguising yourself on the web. Can someone use a public internet IP address and change their MAC address through the use of software to perform an activity online and not be traced back to the original computer?

Answer
Using public WiFi, you might be able to prevent someone figuring out who you are by changing your MAC address; however, you wouldn't want to use the same MAC address twice or for very long.

No matter what you do, the will be able to figure out your location while you were using the public network and if warranted they will check surveillance camera footage and the like to figure out who you are.

So, no you won't be able to trace back to the original computer, but they will know where the computer was located while you were doing what you were doing.

What would I need to have my Wireless Infrared Camera connect to my computer for recording?

Curious

I want to purchase this item..

http://cgi.ebay.com/300ft-Wireless-Infrared-Day-Night-Color-Security-Camera_W0QQitemZ220409502867QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item33516e1c93&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=65%3A12%7C66%3A2%7C39%3A1%7C72%3A1240%7C293%3A1%7C294%3A50

But I am not sure what it will take to record what the receiver sees from the camera onto my Mac laptop. I think I need a cord of some sort but I am not sure what type of cord for Mac. Thanks!
Thank Caoedhen. The camera is wireless but it can also be wired. I will be using it wireless so I need something a chord that will connect the receiver to my Mac. I think I have software that can record it once it's plugged in, but I need a name of a cord to use. Thanks!

Answer
If it needed a cord, it wouldn't be wireless.

You'd need video capture software on your Mac (iMovie may work?) and a place to plug the camera and receiver in. Should be USB, unless it will only work over those composite cables that are included... in which case you need a real video capture device attached to your Mac.

You may be able to use your Mac directly, if it has WiFi (Airport) built in and the "receiver" isn't locked to the camera somehow.

The camera description appears to say it can be AC or DC powered, but that part of the listing is cut off in mid-sentence. Probably "optional battery pack". So you could make it a truly wireless system by putting the camera anywhere within WiFi range of the receiver.

back to my computer which someone purchased with their credit card?

Answer
They can't trace you back to the laptop (probably, change you MAC address to be really sure), but they can track you back to the location it was sent from. There was a guy you hacked his former employer from a McDonalds and they ID'd him on the security camera video. (But he did make it easier for them buy also buying something with his credit card there.)

If you have internet access on home computer, do you automatically have Wi-Fi?

snowyshiel

I have an AT&T 2wire modem with dsl on my mac,and i want to buy a macbook. Will i be able to use the wireless feature? Do ihave to buy something elseto get internet on my laptop??

Answer
It depends.

Some modems have a built-in router (it would have multiple plugs for wired computers) and even wireless (look for an antenna)

If not, you need a Wireless Router (or access point if your modem has a built-in router)

If you only care about internet, 802.11b (11Mbps) is plenty fast. They don't really sell these anymore but what they do sell is 802.11g (54Mbps) which replaces and is backwards compatible with 802.11b. This is also what most built-in WiFi laptops and handhelds sold today use. I wouldn't get anything else because it's just a waste of money. Residential broadband internet is usually only 1-5Mbps so even WiFi-b is plenty fast.

If you plan to do file-sharing, you care about the wireless speed more so go with 802.11g (54Mbps) or the new 802.11n (108Mbps). I should say I've never actually seen 802.11n in action but from what I understand it's compatible with all 4 standards (a/b/g/n) and claims to be wider-range.

I like the Belkin 54G router because it's the cheapest name-brand one I've found ($39 at most office stores) and I know it works (I've installed 3 of them) but the brand is really up to you. Only one of those Belkins has gone bad, and Belkin replaced it for free. I don't know if all routers include this but the Belkin one comes with a setup CD that guides you through plugging everything in correctly and automatically programs the router to work as well as guiding you through enabling security.

Put your wireless router as high up as you can and as far from electrical and metal things as you can, that'll give you the best coverage.

What type of spy camera should I get?

best wifi security camera mac image

Hi, every now and then my house gets Teepeed ( toilet papered ) or I get egged and I'm sick of cleaning it up. I'm looking for a spy camera that could catch the victim. My yard has a palm tree in the middle and a lamp post on the corner that has a view of my door. I'm looking for one that's under 100$ and one that is wireless and waterproof and small enough so it won't be noticeable also it would be really helpful if it could hook up to my Mac ( computer ). Thanks so much.

Answer
you don't need a spy camera, you need a security camera. If you hook the camera at your front door or windows you can use a webcam, it will be much cheaper. However for outdoor you will need a weather proof wifi security camera

if they come by at night your will need a IR or InfraRed camera for night time functioning so you can see the little bastards in the act. it is more expensive but it works well at night

Can the camera on a MacBook Pro be hacked?

FK

I'm thinking of getting one and I have never had a computer with a built in camera (and haven't had a web cam since 2003) but I'm nervous about hackers getting into the camera because I'm always connected to my WiFi and sometimes just leave my computer open.

I'm just wondering how good is their security.

Also don't just say "duct tape" that is not the answer to my question and the camera is where the sensor is for the keyboard light.

Answer
Can anything be hacked is the question, and the answer is yes. If someone is smart enough to make something that's secured, someone else is smart enough to hack that security.

So yes, anything can be 'hacked'

If I wanted to hack your webcam, I could get your IP address and use any number of security vulnerabilities to gain entry to your system, or I could brute force into your wireless connection, once in there I could install a remote viewer for your computer giving me full control of the system. I could also send you a bug in your email that once opened will allow me to remote view your desktop and transmit that data anywhere.

Very straight forward. Mind you, if someone was smart enough to do that, I doubt they'd waste their time staring at you wandering around your room. They'd be too busy stealing money or credit card information or any other number of things.

People are always saying "Mac's are secured, you don't get viruses for Macs, you can't break them!". Companies actually pay me to find my way into secure areas of their servers to find network vulnerabilities. They've all got Linux based servers which are largely superior than any Unix based MacOS. Basically, if it was impossible to break into a Mac, no one would ever buy a PC. Every computer at the bank, your financial advisor, the local stores that take your credit cards, etc, etc, etc... Would all be running Mac's, but almost none of them are.

But yes, if you're REALLY paranoid, then tape is your answer. :p

UPDATE: Obviously the person who said I'm "Full of it" has no clue what they're talking about. Vulnerabilities for EVERY OS (Windows, MacOS, Linux) are discovered almost every single day. There is no such thing as a fully secured system. If it was, then there wouldn't be patches because it would already be perfect.

Right now MacOS's #1 vulnerability comes from Memory Overflow issues... As late as May and June 2009, people have been using Memory Overflows to get into MacOS systems... Chances are you're running 10.5 Leopard and these issues aren't even being addressed until the 10.6 version is being released.

If you believe what that other guy says and that mac's can't be hacked go to Google and type "How to Hack a Mac" and see the 23 million+ search results.

Answer
Hello

Here is a DVR that will work perfectly for you.

http://www.ascendentgroup.com/x4s.htm

Most DVR's and cameras don't have the ability to view from your i-phone, and you cant just download generic software all DVR's and cameras uses different encryption , software, and compression so you cant use another companies software to view another manufactures DVR.

You want a DVR that has an app specifically designed to work with it like the one I am suggesting below.

What you want is a DVR a DVR converts analog cameras and as well as storing images on site allows you to distribute video over LAN and WAN networks. (internet and network) this way you have both on site storage and recording at your house.

A good Analog DVR will do what you are looking for and not only display them but record them as well they will also allow you to view them over the internet from a Iphone or laptop.

X4S Remote Accessibility
View all your cameras instantly and remotely, and configure the DVR through internet using eitherbusiness in real time from anywhere in the world. MAC or PC platforms (smart phones too). This allows you to manage your

Many people have a misconception that IP has Superior scalability then Analog but with the advancements with DVR's this simply isn't true, you cn do up to 16,000 cameras each camera could even be from a different DVR and a different site.

And when you are using the internet to connect multiple sites together analog transmits over the internet faster with less latency using less bandwidth allowing you not only to view and monitor a situation real time but also effective control PTZ cameras.

What is the Advantage of IP?
Many of the so called advantages of IP simply don't hold water in the real world, IP is mainly Hype and marketing and outside of a few niche applications such as 1 or 2 camera installs, where MP cameras are needed or large scale wireless projects which represent about 2% of the total CCTV market, IP has very few advantages compared to analog based on performance, cost and reliability. (yet all companies touting IP will often use MP cameras to demonstrate the advantages of IP)

IP video is more about marketing then it is about performance as larger companies like Bosch pelco Honeywell axis can change for both hardware and software and once you use there cameras you have to keep using there cameras unlike analog.

Also IP sounds great, plug and play, Better image quality, use existing infrastructure, who wouldnât want that unfortunately this is often not the case.

IP cameras are based on CMOS
Analog cameras are based on CCD (usually)

A CMOS sensor is constructed using a array of pixels, but unlike CCDâs CMOS do not have a capacitor to store the charge for each pixel. The rows of pixels are activated sequentially rather then individually

In short unless you have perfect lighting a good CCD camera will outperform an equivalent CMOS camera.

File Size:
The smaller the files size the more images that are able to be sent and the faster they can be processed improving both FPS and speed. File size is the heart of any DVR and goes far beyond just its streaming capabilities as it also determines the recoding storage time, how much you can back up at once, how fast it renders and searches video.

IP cameras have up to a 5X larger file size then analog cameras. (at same resolution) I have seen MP cameras that on 2MP resolution are over 300X (%3000) larger then our X3 DVR on a CIF image. This is an extreme case but generally speaking IP cameras have a much larger file size.

Most routers and switches are not designed to handle IP cameras they have enough bandwidth but they are not able to process the amounts of commands. (9 IP cameras 30FP is 230 instructions per second) standard routers have enough bandwidth (up to 1GB) but cant handle the amount of tasks (instructions) so frames get dropped latency is introduced and the effectiveness of other devices such as POS, printers and dats storage can be affected and compromised.

Donât get me wrong there are some brutal analog cameras and DVR out there but If you see a good D1 resolution image such as Ascendents Hardware compressed you will not be so quick to join the IP bandwagon.

IP is a young and emerging technology and I have no doubt that in the future it will outperform analog cameras but its not a mature technology yet. Once we start to get standard IP platforms, get rid of license feesâ and existing networks have larger bandwidths then IP video will be a good solution, but until then analog is the way to go.

Make sure you get good cameras as well, Ascendent has the best IR outdoor cameras on the market and are about %50 less then Bosch while offering triple the distance.

How to shut off certain devices from wifi?

Mohammad Z

I have to shut off the wifi to my sons' ipads so they can't go on the internet without my permission but I can't turn it off from the actual ipad as they are old enough to know how to turn back on. Is there any step by step way to shut their wifi on or off instead of changing password? By the way my internet provider is comcast.

Answer
You seek a technical solution to a social problem, which rarely works effectively or for very long. You'll find the never-ending quest for technical fixes to social problems in questions routinely posed here:
--How do I keep my { spouse | sibling | roommate } from { hogging the bandwidth with porn | using more than x% of wireless | staying up all night on Facebook }

You are about to become an iOS app developer. A quick search for 'ipad wifi restrictions', 'ipad and kids' and similar searches finds this is like the problem elementary schools and libraries face when allowing children to use computers, with no easy or cheap technical fixes. I believe the most effective fixes are a mix of technical and social fixes -- nice way of saying laying down the law with the kids, saying they'll be monitored, and allowing the kids to rat each other out as violators. Oddly, that's the same approach at large corporations I've worked for.

Apple iOS devices can be restricted (such as only connecting to a certain wireless network or disabling the camera) with locked profiles delivered several ways, including over-the-air, but it sounds more like an enterprise solution.

What you want doesn't appear to exist - a locked app that allows you to kill the WiFi remotely over the air, and probably requires you to connect the device via USB to re-enable wireless.

Lacking that, you can restrict the iPads wireless connectivity while at home:
--Purchase a wireless access point or router for use by the iPads. If it's a router, disable the DHCP server and connect it to your existing router using the LAN ports.
--Configure the iPads to securely connect to the new wireless router. Change the SSID and security key on your existing router so the iPads cannot connect to the old router.
--When the kids need internet access, turn on the new router. After their access is done, turn it off

When the kids start turning the router on without your permission, start disconnecting the new router at your existing router (assuming you put your existing router in a secure or monitored location). To make the disconnect/reconect easier, you may purchase another small 4-port switch to connect your old router to the new router - you turn the new switch on and off to disconnect and reconnect the new router.

If you want to be fair, establish a 'no internet' time for the family (such as 10 pm to 6 am) and put the main router on a timer. Your existing router may have some time-of-day settings that allow you to do this.

Your router may also have settings for time-of-day or service restrictions for individual devices by IP or MAC addresses, but do not expect that to work for long. This forum has many postings from kids trying to get around those router restrictions, which are fairly easy to defeat in most routers.

How do I start a new iPad without installing iTunes or sync'ing with a PC?

Rob

I just got an iPad for free (wouldn't have bought one with all the limitations), and the screen is stuck on asking to install itunes and sync. with my computer. I do NOT want to install any iTunes or iCrap on my computer. How do I bypass this ?
Also, I don't need any updates at this point. I just want to use it right away like I didn't have another computer around.

Answer
you're out of luck. my brother-in-law works at Apple, and even at Apple they don't allow staff to talk about bugs, issues and customer complaints about the ipad. I've seen people online taking it to the apple store to activate it.

anyway, you might want to read reviews about it, and decide if it makes sense to keep it or return it. my husband got one for me a few months ago, and we returned it (with a restocking fee) because it was more like a toy for kids who never had a real computer. it is more for browsing certain sites, but not youtube or others with Flash unless you accept their "sterilized" apps from their store. I spite of great marketing hype, here are a few things that you should know about the ipad:

- you cannot print anything from it. period. not even your e-ticket confirmation. plain dumb !
- no real multitasking, even their "fix" is not a real multitasking, but good enough for the masses
- you cannot watch Flash-enabled sites. this includes numerous e-learning sites and most video and games on the Internet.
- problematic WiFi support. Apple did it again, even with their wireless access point. Don't expect to use that in a hotel with WiFi. At least 2/3 don't work with there!
- impossible to synchronize to a PC that does not have an Intel chip. good luck on that one, since you MUST at least synchronize it once, as you just noticed ! ;-)

and now the obvious that you might have overlooked:
- no camera,
- no USB ports,
- no easy way to organize a file system and transfer/copy,
- no easy way to print your files, no interaction with office productivity software (Office),
- on-screen keyboard is not practical, if you need to type a bit, use a REAL laptop
- screen resolution is 4:3 so you see movies with huge black bars,
- there is no HDMI out so you can't connect it to your new LCD,
- no SD or other card readers for your photos,
- screen is glossy so you can't read on it outdoors,
- ridiculously low storage space (even netbooks have over 200gb now)
- very fragile and slippery in your hands (one drop could kill the screen)
- much pricier than alternative tablets like Archos with way more features and openness
- you cannot change the browser for a better one. remember Apple is a closed system
- expensive data plans if you use 3G
- no support for email attachments. feels like back in the 1990's.
- to watch movies from your PC, you have to download a video converter, or buy them from iTunes
- Air Video (which enables you to watch videos you have loaded into iTunes) only works with a few routers, and notably not with any AT&T Routers at all
- no tethering to anything
- no common laptop/netboook features: security software, voice recorder, or calculator
- extraordinarily fragile device, do not drop it on your carpet, it WILL break.
- heavier than you think. You won't be able to hold it in your hand for long.
- cannot rest flat on a table or your lap, you will block the WiFi antenna behind the Apple logo and weaken your WiFi signal.

And finally, to do anything you need on the iPad, you still need to connect it regularly to a PC or a Mac. You have to connect in order to sync up your latest podcasts and media files. You need to sync to get OS updates. You need to sync in order to get your latest business documents on the iPad.

Now you can make your own informed decision about keeping that iPad or not... Good luck!

What type of spy camera should I get?

best wifi security camera mac on uControl Home Security System | iTech News Net
best wifi security camera mac image

If I use my laptop to send an anonymous complaint to the police using wifi, will they be able to track?

back to my computer which someone purchased with their credit card?
