N96 or iPhone 3G ? what should i choose?

stephen

Answer
Definitely the N96. The iphone is known for its great touchscreen and its revolutionary software, it's a great media player, but it has a weak 2 megapixel camera, besides people are complaining about its reception issues and a security flaw were discovered recently.
While the N96 doesn't have a touchscreen, it's a great cellphone with a 5 megapixel camera, great features suitable almost for all requirements that you may need from 1 device. Check out the site below to know more about the 2 phones or find others that suit your needs.
Hope I helped.

Is there a battery operated security camera that notifies U by email via phone that a door has been opened?

John D

Hi I am trying to find a security camera that notifies me by email or cellphone that doesn't charge you a monthly service, that has battery backup or battery operated!! I want it like this because these systems are not susceptible to people shutting off the breakers in your house or cutting your wire!! anybody know any security company that sells such a particular product?

Answer
Well sir I dont see that device anywhere.

What would make more sense is buy a UPS, (Uninterruptible Power Supply, aka battery backup..usually runs about $60 for 1.5-2 hours runtime. Is used by data centers in case of a power outage to keep electronics powered up.) buy a motion activated wireless security cam that records/sends notices when activity is present and attach the receiver to the UPS so when power kicks out, its still active. Ditto for the wireless camera if its in another location.

Keep the receiver close to your intenet modem if it doesnt have a bettery backup already isntalled into it. If the modem cuts off but the receiver is still fucntioning, it will probably just record but not transmit anymore data via the internet. If the modem doesnt have a backup, also attach it to the UPS. Unless they blow the breaker with explosives, you should be fine with a constant internet connection.

But you can also opt for a 3G wireless internet service thats attached to the UPS which will be transmitting off of battery power constantly, hwoever this too can be suceptible as a tech savy thief would jsut need to buy a radio jammer for $200 and knock out all cellphone signals on a wide spectrum within a good sized radius.

Can you recommend a great home security camera system?

Bgirl9488

I would like to be able to hook it up to my computer system through my wireless network. Anything affordable out there?

Answer
"Affordable" means different things to different people.

All the IP or Network cameras will do what you want - remember, wireless is not totally accurate. The camera still needs a wire for power.

Do you need color? Night vision? How far does the night vision need to be?

Because the cams are on your LAN, they get assigned an IP address and you get to them through a browser on your computer. There is no "system" - it just depends if you want the computer to record the camera activities. IP cameras are typically more expensive than the analog cameras.

Another method is to get the wireless 2.4 GHz analog cameras and feed the video into a multi-channel DVR like
http://shop1.frys.com/search?cat=-45940&pType=pDisplay
Since the DVR would get assigned an IP address, then you access the DVR - not the individual cameras. Some of the DVRs require you to buy a hard drive, too - 250 gig or 500 gig HDDs are pretty cheap...

Hello I have wanted to get security cameras for awhile now and I found these

http://www.dhgate.com/4ch-full-d1-h-264-dvr-security-system-with/p-ff8080813976b29c01399f8b5b6f6f65.html#s1-1-null

Can anyone tell me how i would hook these up to my old computer monitor do i need to hook the dvr up to a internet router or somthing? or can i just hook up the dvr and cameras to the computer screen and thats it? If i need a router are there any type of cameras that i can just hook up to a screen with the dvr and thats it?

Answer
Can anyone tell me how i would hook these up to my old computer monitor do i need to hook the dvr up to a internet router or somthing?

- If you mean hook up to a PC monitor it says it has a vga port that supports up to 1280 * 1024 resolution. The DVR is already a "Network DVR" means that you could connect it on an existing LAN in your home or office and with a proper configuration you can access the device on a desktop or laptop anywhere inside your own local area network. You'll only need the internet if you want your device to be "port forwarded" on your router meaning access your device outside your home &Office LAN through internet on another location (e.g. on a mall internet cafe).

or can i just hook up the dvr and cameras to the computer screen and thats it?
- On the near middle of the page you've posted has the graphical layout on how you could connect or setup your cctv system. hint: the red line indicates how the devices can be interconnected.

If i need a router are there any type of cameras that i can just hook up to a screen with the dvr and thats it?
- There are analog cctv cameras that you could connect its cable directly on a A/V RCA connector on the tv. When the cctv is powered up(usually 12v) it will display its video feed directly to the tv and the tv will display it. This setting will not record anything thus rather just display live feed from the cam.
-The router is only optional if you want to connect your dvr on your existing LAN without it your cctv system will just work fine.

How does a Security Camera work?

Taufan

Answer
Security cameras are useful in improving the safety of residential and business buildings. Home security camera systems have gained phenomenal popularity over the years. With spectacularly enhanced digital imagery and moderate working costs, the use of security cameras has become quite widespread. The use of security camera systems is no longer limited to banks or department stores but is increasingly being used for residential security also.

Home security camera systems let you keep track of children at play and simultaneously can keep an eye on the front door. They vary in their appropriateness and operation, and it is imperative that the proper selection is made based on individual requirements to ensure their effectiveness.

While choosing a home security camera system you must decide on the area to be observed, and the camera should be located at a suitable distance in order to focus on the preferred area. In case there is a need to mount the camera on a wall or structure, a mounting bracket can be placed at the predetermined spot, and the position of mounting screws can be indicated.

While opting for a wired system, the camera and monitor should be connected in accordance with instructions. Care should be taken to not expose the wiring, so the home security system cannot be sabotaged. And always remember to keep these gadgets out of reach of children.

Another crucial issue that should also be given adequate importance is the number of cameras that one would like to employ in the home security camera system. Some systems have room for only one or two, whereas other systems offer more. There are also camera systems which incorporate microphones, allowing you to hear and see the required object at the same time.

Home Security Systems provides detailed information on Home Security Systems, Wireless Home Security Systems, Home Security Alarm Systems, Home Security Camera Systems and more. Home Security Systems is affiliated with Wireless Home Security Systems.

Is it legal to have security cameras in residential building if signs are up to notify people?

starlight_

Nothing SICK! We want to keep the apartment building we have safer and the camera would only survey who comes in and out the main door. Is this legal? Or would it be legal if we put a sign up telling people they were on video surveillance?

Answer
NOT a PROBLEM and you don't even have to post signs if the cameras are in plain sight; say on the side of the building into the parking lot or above the entry gate.

You can also get dummy cameras that look real but aren't really cameras. They run about $15 vs. the real deal.

A good color camera with Infrared will run about $200. Get a couple of the real ones and then sprinkle a few dummies around the property.

Then you have a monitor and a mux (it will rotate between several cameras and show them on a split screen monitor). It won't be worth a darn if you don't record with either a DVR or tape (DVR is better). Total system cost is probably around $1,000 to do it right installed.

Check with your insurance company because there might be a significant break in your premium.

How much would it cost to set up Home Security Camera system?

ferretkiss

I would like to put some security cameras around the outside of the house, because of trouble with the neighbors. I would like to view what the cameras see, later. I think I would need at least three cameras, one on the car in the street, one on the front porch area, and one on the back yard area. Or maybe two in the front.

What is the best way to do this?

About how much would it cost?

Answer
It depends what you want to do with the video.

An inexpensive consumer 4-channel surveillance DVR is about $300.
Add in a 500 gig hard drive for about $70 (records the video).
4 cameras - Average $100 each for outdoor rated, night vision, so $400... budget around $1,000 for a low-end, multi-camera, system.

The expensive part is the labor. Are you planning to install it yourself? How will the camera's wires get from the camera to the DVR? Thinking "wireless" cameras? They still need electricity - so is there power where you want to install the cameras?

Actually, "wireless" security cameras use more wires than wired ones... The camera needs power (1 wire) and transmits video wirelessly to a base station. The base station needs power and a wire to the DVR. Total = 3 "wires". A wired camera has one long "combo" cable that carries video and power.

How do you want to monitor that video? The DVR has a video-out connection that can connect to any TV with a working, available, composite (yellow RCA jack) plug. More expensive DVRs can be added to a computer network...

Frys (and Frysdotcom) has a good selection of security and surveillance stuff...

What's the best security camera: dome or PTZ?

Mike McK

I want to monitor the outside of my home, where there are regular car break-ins, and occasional robberies.

I have a T-shape to watch - driveway beside the house, and the street in front.

I can't decide between a single point-tilt-zoom (PTZ) camera, or set of dome or bullet cameras. Any advice?

Answer
Hey

If you looking for a good PTZ camera I would Recommend Ascendnt.

They are a DVR and CCTV manufacture located in Canada they have great products and are about 35% cheaper then Bosch and Pelco while offering higher quality.

When you get into PTZ cameras you don't want to use non brand names as they having moving parts unlike fixed cameras.

http://ascendentdvr.com/ptz/30_1.html

Ascendent has a live demo of a PTZ camera
Open IE not Firefox (unless you run IE from Firefox)

1) http://24.66.0.207/ (in address bar)
2) download active X controls
3) Hit connect (right hand corner)
4) DVR type (PC DVR)
5) Site-100
6) Username: Demo (case sensitive)
7) Password demo (lower case)
8) Hit extend config
9) Site-IP 24.66.0.207
10) Data port 7000
11) Stream Port: 8000

Camera 1 is a PTZ camera and you can take control.

Here is a video link on how to connect: http://www.screencast.com/users/elyonwireless/folders/Jing/media/e52f6e41-a2db-46e1-b039-3593f2e0f9e3

How do I setup vacation home surveillance cameras?

Tommy

I would like to get cameras for my vacation home that I can view and control through the internet. I'd like them connected to a DVR, and to be motion activated so I don't run out of hard drive space quickly.

I have someone who is supposed to be watching the place, but I want to make sure he's doing his job and not having parties or anything at my house.

What are some good options?
I guess its hard for someone to suggest a specific product without looking at my home and getting more information.

I've tried looking at the websites of some of these security camera places and don't really understand all the technical jargon.

I would like to become a more educated consumer.

Answer
Try looking on the net through a Google search for security cameras relating to your situation. In terms of specific products that you should get, then I think you should first get some advice from a security expert which would advise you about what kind of products you should be looking for.

I'll give you the phone number to a business in my city which specializes in this kind of thing.

Secret Services, Inc.

Do you ever think of home security systems?

DOERR

have you ever think of best home security systems?

Answer
I have thought about home security and here are is the conversation I have to myself about it all:

A home alarm system is for when people break into your house and even though it will notify you and the police that someone has broken in the bad guys still have plenty of time to make off with your stuff. In the end you can get your home insurance to replace most of the stuff and any home repairs but it will be difficult for the police to catch the criminals.

Why not check out a home surviellance system instead? With actual cameras around your property you can literally catch any one in the act if you have the cameras positioned around the exterior of the house. Video is a lot more likely to catch a criminal than just hoping they get caught selling your computer. Even with the cameras in plain site they act as a deterant more so than the little sign on the window saying ADT protects my house. The other thing to think of is the monthly fee for a security system whereas a surveillance system is a one-time fee.

I linked to a home package that I am considering that contains everything you need to get up and running out of the box. It has 4 outdoor rated cameras, a 1TB DVR for recording up to a month of video, the ability to check the feed from my smartphone and all the cables and power supplies needed hook everything up. At a one-time fee of $399 my money is on the surveillance system.

what is the best home security surveillance system for 250$ or under?

Cory S

im looking for a decent 4 channel security system with dvr and at least 2 cameras for around 250 its doesn't have to be the greatest, just get the job done... so any brands or models of the best bang for my buck would be appreciated.

Answer
I found a 4 channel package that comes with 2 cameras a DVR and everything else you need to get up and running for only $375.00. The awesome thing I think about this system is that it is ready to go out of the box so all you have to do is plug it all up and you have a security system.

I know this system is a little more than you wanted to spend but to get a "decent" system you are going to have to spend a little more money. Most standalone DVR systems will cost around $200 then you need compatible cameras which can vary in price from as low as $30 and up plus all the necessary cables.

I hope this helps!

outdoor security camera?

I want to set up a security camera outside of my house. However i want to have it mounted on a tree in my yard rather than on the house itself. Does anyone know of a camera that i could mount on a tree and still have function well. Also i would dont want to have to run a cable to my house, so if the camera could save to a memory card in the camera that would be great. It would also be great for the camera to work in the dark and/or to have a motion sensor that only records when it senses movement. picture quality is important as well

Home Wireless security cameras

I am planning to install (Security Camera Wireless) outdoor.
1- Is there something call (UHV).
2- What kind of product should I get that doesn't be affect with other frequencies (mobile, radio)?

Answer
For wireless stuff, it would normally be "UHF". Typically this is for good audio equipment. UHF video is still used for television stations and you would need to be licensed even if only low power.

There are only two consumer wireless video methods:
1) shared band in the 2.4 GHz environment.
2) wifi (wireless compute local area network)

Both can get interference from other sources. If you want no chance of wireless interference, then you need to use a wired camera. Also, remember that "wireless" generally means only the video (and audio if the camera has a mic) signal is wireless - you still need a wire for power unless you set up some sort of battery and solar recharge equipment.

You want cameras that are rated for outdoor use... Do they need to have "night vision"?

Are you just monitoring the video?

How many cameras?

If you are recording, are you looking at a multi-channel DVR
http://shop1.frys.com/search?cat=-45940&pType=pDisplay
or are you turning a computer into a multichannel DVR?

If the power goes out, are you expecting this camera system to continue working? What are your battery back-up plans?

Home security products?

My house got recently broken into. They took my new flat screen tv and my ps3, I was upset to say the least lol. So it made me want to have some sort of security system in place.

How My house was broken into:
I came home and noticed my fron door was open.I thought i left my door unlocked and the wind blew it open. Then i noticed that the glass on my door was broken. I have a really dumb door with a major security flaw.It is a big wooden door with about 12 small glass panes in the door itself with 4 on each side running vertically. They broke one of the panes near the lock and stuck there hand in and unlocked the door.
I live with my mom and she is the house owner. She dosent feel to atiment or too serious about makeing the house more secure.I say this because she dosent want to fix the main flaw of our security here at the house which would be the big door withabout 12 acess points to break to gain acess to the lock.
My house is set up as to where I have an inside porch. So that means you walk down the block,go up my 10 foot sidewalk to enter my indoor front porch which is fully visible to the street. My Porch door is also a wooddoor with a big pane of glass which has this very sturdy lock.I think this would of maybe prevented it because i doubt there going to break a big peice of glass in full view of the street and other people house. But they came onto the indoor porch because the front front door was unlocked then they came to the big wood door with all those glass panes, broke a pain closest to the lock and walked upstiars and took my ps3 and flastscreeen and i assume drove off.
So this is why im asking my question which is should i go through a company like ADT,Broadview, simplx a company that offers that type of service where the house is monitored at there central location then alert you and the proper emergency service if they detect a problem or should i just build my own system and try and make the house more secure.

1. Should i go with one of those companies? the only benifit is that if i dont secure my doors properly and im not home and the neighbors dont hear it and call that i know the police will be there.

2. What products can i buy to make my house more secure?

3.For my wooden front door what can i do to make that secure? i heard of deadbolts where you need a key to lock/unlock on both sides, are those real? I want that so if they do break the glass they still cant get in.

4.Are cameras really that benificial? They only really help when in plain view, which i think isint that good to begin with cept detur. Or that there only good when your stuff is already gone which i think is to late.Where can i buy cameras that only motion activated?

4.Are there any good websites that are about home security that offeer cheap good products? how about any forums for prevention and security product reviews

5.What kind of locks are there and what benifits do they provide? Are there any chain locks which you can unlock from the outside?

6.should i buy a new door handle with a lock and maybe some sort of other lock like a deadbolt for my bedroom door? I ask this because i dont have anything else worth stealing except for my room and worse comes tow orse they break in but i want something to stop or slow them down alot if they actually get in.

7.Where can i buy glass laminate so i can make all the glass entry points in my house unbreakable. I think its called security film and its a laminate that makes it bullet proof or shatter proof so they cant just break the glass and unlock the door..I searched ebay,is there any other sites that offer this type of product?

8.What can i do to make my front porch door more secure? Im goin to start locking this door more often since its out in the open and i think that will detur most. Maybe put security fil over it just incase. Same with my back door and my front wooden door. What can i do to make those more secure?

9.What decides how good a lock is? is it the width or depth of the lock/deadbolt?

Answer
I don't think there is any worse feeling than being violated by someone breaking into your home. You can a million things to your house and if they want to get in, they probably will. The key is to make it so they don't want to take a chance getting in. I have had ADT and Broad-view Security alarms and also the do it yourself kind.

Personally I like the bigger companies and currently have Broad-view for my home. Get door and window alarms as well as motion sensors for your home. But believe it or not the best deterrent is for a yard sign both in front and back of the home advising that you have an alarm system installed.

Get a good lock for your bedroom door and keep a cell phone in the room with you. That way if the alarms goes off you will still be able to contact the police before they can enter your room. That should help you to get a good nights sleep.

There are do it yourself sites that offer some good systems, the best one I found is www.X10.com. I had these at one time but found a few too many false alarms. The monitoring with the big companies isn't cheep, about 33 to 36 bucks a month, but you can put a price on piece of mind. When you leave in the AM and put that alarm on you can be pretty sure that when you get home you will find your home just the way you found it. Also, ask your neighbors to keep an eye on the house for strangers hanging around. Hope this helps.

Answer
Lot's of questions, not enough space to answer them all. For that matter, there's not going to be one answer since a lot of factors must be considered. For sure you should replace the single cylinder door locks with double cylinder dead bolts.

Double cylinder dead bolts are considered more secure in doors with glass or doors with glass sidelights. It is meant to deter a burglar who might break the glass and reach inside to unlock the door. However, you will want to check your state building codes because double cylinder locks are a violation in some states due to the possible hindrance to escape in a hurry. During a fire, a person may become disoriented and blinded by smoke, becoming trapped behind their own door when they can not find the key to unlock it. Certainly an important issue to consider when choosing your deadbolt.

Safety Tip: If you have a Double Cylinder Dead Bolt, hang a key next to or above the door out of reach of the glass opening. Be sure everyone in the house knows where it is in case of emergency. Having a copy made with a red colored blank or red paint the top of the key, will make it more visible. Removing it when you have strangers or service people in the house is also a safe practice.

As far as whether or not to have a security company monitored system installed is something you'll need to do more research on. It's also going to require you and your mother to be more disciplined about locking the doors, all of the doors, whenever you are not home and at night. If you have a bunch of nuisance calls then you will get fined.

You should do some more research on do it yourself security systems available at sites like the following:

http://home.howstuffworks.com/home-improvement/household-safety/security/home-security-tips.htm
http://www.diysecurityforum.com/
http://www.homesecuritystore.com/
http://www.intellahome.com/
http://www.doityourself.com/stry/the-best-wireless-home-security-system-for-you

Then call a couple of the monitoring companies in your area and have them come out and do a site survey and give you a quote for the system installation and monitoring costs.

Good luck.

Home security, spy cams etc??

Adam

I'd like to know if there is any home security system that allows me to set up a camera at home and then access it through my computer at work??

Maybe something like a spy cam, that i can turn on and off by accessing it on my computer??

Is there anything like that avalible on the market??

Answer
There are plenty of network-ready cameras, but the question is whether your home ISP and work networks are ready for the video feed. Many home ISP providers limit the amount of data you can upload in a day (i.e. 20 MB), so a video feed will max it out quickly. Also, video is a heavy use of a network, so your work network may not have enough extra bandwidth to let the video flow without triggering alarms in your IT dept.

There are tricks, like having a camera take stills and upload them on a timed basis. Or using software that only records when it detects changes in the picture (like when someone comes to the door). You can then either upload the recording (might be too big) or save it on the computer for later viewing. You can usually have it just take a series of stills, instead, which are easier to upload.

I just record everything to a computer and then if there's a problem around my place, I can review the day's video when I have time.

Using hand held camcorders for home security...?

Nydine

I am wondering if it is possible to use a hand held camcorder for a home security camera.

Would it be possible to link it up so the footage is recorded live on the computer?

If so...how would you go about doing it?

Answer
My friend uses a handicam but it runs continuously. I bought a simple Logitech web cam & point it out the window over my front door. The camera has a motion sensor & the included software is easy to set up so video is only recorded to your hard drive when something is actually happening. This makes for some great office pranks, too!

garage door with camera?

Kelly L

i need to see when my husband gets home as he is opening the garage door

Answer
so you need a surveillance camera right? one of those cheap cctv like cameras you could hook in to your computer is logitech's security cam. another one is from linksys.

they both have sensors which triggers recording when detected a motion. this can be set on its settings. you can also time the recording as well.

you can also view the camera even when you're halfway around the world thru the computer via the internet.

i'm planning to get one of the logitech but not anytime soon.

Can infrared light "spoof" cameras and motion sensors?

Acorn S

In the film Inside man we see thieves use special infrared lanterns to blind security cameras. I want to know if it's possible and if it works on motion sensors as well.

Answer
It's possible to blind any camera with enough light. However, attempting to do this to a PIR motion sensor will simply set it off.

are there any really good Motion detection security camera's?

rachelxkay

within the past month, eighteen homes in our neighborhood have been broken into when the owners weren't home. they have no idea who is doing it, we're about to go to nyc for two weeks, and we REALLY need a security camera (or more than one) to record while we're gone.
cost doesn't really matter as long as it's not insane, but something that has motion detection and records when it detects any motion?

Answer
Today, its not the security camera that has a motion sensor but the DVR. Basically, you run your security camera and set your DVR to automatically begin recording when it notices pixel change. You can then set a time limit after pixel change has stopped for the DVR to stop recording. So, lets say someone walks into your home. The DVR will begin recording the feed. Then, the person leaves two minutes later. You set your stop to 30 sec. So, 30 sec. after the person leaves and pixel changes have stopped, the DVR will stop recording.

Installing a security camera?

Ava D

We've been hearing a lot of noises outside our house. And, my friend advised me to try installing a security camera. What are the benefits of installing home security cameras in my home?

Answer
I've been a product manager for Security Cameras for about 10 years. I believe the benefits are:

1) Pre and Post event recording (seeing what happened not only during a crime, but what happened just before and after)
2) if you have a camera at your front door, you have a better way to see who is at the door without approaching the door. If you hook the camera to your TV set, you can even see who is at the door without leaving your couch
3) Remote Viewing -- if you have your camera hooked to a DVR or if it's an IP camera, you have the ability to remote look in from anywhere that has an internet connection. I even have the ability to get live snapshots from my cameras at home via my cell phone.
4) Deterrant -- Cameras that are visible to would-be burglars, intruders, hooligans, etc, are great deterrants to those types of activities.

Try not to go cheap. The cheaper the camera, the worse the image. Resist that urge. Expect to pay between $700-$1500 for a really good, Day/Night, high resolution camera, installed, plus the price to record it. If you go cheap on this, like with a Swann or Qsee camera from Fry's, yes you'll be able to see if SOMEBODY is at your door, but forget trying to ID them later.

Best security camera?

Margi

What is the best security camera for the home security?

A) IP camera
B) Dome Camera

http://www.aditgroup.com/CCTV-Camera.html

Answer
It depends on the requirements. But your question is confusing. IP (Internet Protocol) is merely the network connection the camera has. Usually, an IP camera - for home use - is not "outdoor rated". Some are... Usually, the IP camera has nowhere to store the video, so a video server or dedicated computer is required if the video needs to be stored.

A "dome camera" is a camera in a dome. It can be IP or analog. If it is an IP camera, then the above paragraph applies. If it is an analog camera, it will need some sort of connectivity to a DVR for video storage and the DVR can be connected to the computer network.

We don't know:
what computer network might be available;
whether you need outdoor rated cameras;
how long - if at all - the video storage needs to be;
whether computer or smartphone access is needed... and lots more.

Without this information, selecting *best* is impossible.

Home security camera?

Jason S

I want to buy 1 camera, to place in a window that can view outside my house at night. I'd like to set it and forget it. I need it to record all of the time, and be able to access it when something is vandalized. I'm thinking some kind of DVR. Can anyone who currently uses a system like this let me know what they use, and if they like it. I've already looked at a number of internet sites, but they don't have product reviews.

Answer
My employers had this done right after the new year. I know its real. It has a red light that comes on when you get about 50 feet away. The local camera shop (Creve Coure Camera) installed it. I hope this helps. If no camera or security shop is nearby try this link; http://www.scdlink.com/results.cfm?category=13&secondary=26

Outdoor security camera system?

Casey

We have recently installed a chain link fence behind our home and are planning on letting our great pyreneese out during the day when we are at work so she is not kept in her kennel. We have an awning for shade and shelter, and we will be home around 4:30 or 5:00 each day to check on her. With that being said, we have had issues somewhat in our neighborhood, due to a busy road behind our house. I am not comfortable leaving my dog outside all day or at any time actually without some sort of security system to monitor and video my dog, in case someone was to stop or try to pester etc my dog. I have looked online and have found a ton of outdoor security cameras, however, I have no idea what I am even looking for. I want something that records so that if I come home and somethings amiss, I can check the recording to see what happened that day. I also am needing this to be wireless and obviously weatherproof. All information, models, reviews etc are greatly appreciated.
Rick B......If I find something amiss, the camera will help me to identify the vehicle that had stopped....I never once said my backyard was unsafe...I said we have had issues in the past (such as speeding cars....stolen lawn items) believe me I would not let my dog play outside if the area was a danger zone and I thought she would be harmed or killed, however, as a responsible adult, I would like to have eyes on the area when I cannot be around. I am very proud of you for taking such good care of your pet. I too live in a nice community outside of town, with a covered patio and a wooden fence surrounding my patio, both with gates and a doggy door for my 80 lb dog to retreat too if needed. I also have a locking gate on our chain link fence surrounding the rest of our yard. Once again, I never said that my area was a danger zone, but yes, I live in reality where every great once in a while there is a bratty kid that comes by speeding, or steals my neighbors lawn ornaments. I have d

Answer
Two types of systems:

1) Analog cameras connect to a DVR. The DVR connects to the computer network at your house. The DVR has the feature/functionality for the cameras (i.e., motion detection, send you email when an alarm event is triggered, local video storage for later review, etc.).

2) IP-network based cameras connect to the computer network at the house. The camera becomes a network node. For local video storage, a Network Video Recorder (NVR) is used.

Both methods have pros and cons. What I have found:

1) "Wireless camera" is an inaccurate description. The camera needs power (wire 1). For the first option, the wireless video signal is sent to a base station (or receiver). The receiver plugs into the DVR (video signal) and power (wires 2 and 3). Usually, these cameras are transmitting in the 2.4 Ghz range. This is a shared spectrum and can have interference from lots of sources - including wifi, garage door openers and cordless phones.

2) IP network cameras seem to be more expensive than the analog cameras. The imaging chip seems to be the first thing to go on any security camera, so I use the analog cams (connected to a DVR). The decent consumer cams start at about $150 or so. Less than this and I find myself replacing them at least annually - but at this price point (or higher), they seem to last a bit longer.

3) Because the DVR is on the network and maintains the features for the cameras - including network connectivity for remote viewing and storage, the cameras can be "dumb" = less expensive.

4) Set a budget. I like/use Swann and Lorex gear. It is more expensive than some others, but I have learned (the hard way) that you get what you pay for.

5) We don't know the yard layout. Generally, I would install cameras under the eaves of the house so they have some protection from the elements. We don't know where you are, but extreme heat and cold are not good for electronics. Installing under the eaves helps protect them from the elements (even though they are outdoor rated). If there are environmental extremes in your area, plan to replace the cameras often - or install them in protective housings. This also makes access to power a little easier if you go the wireless route. If you go with wired cameras, then running the single cable between a camera and the DVR may also be easier. That single cable has a couple of plugs on each side - one for power one for video.

You can have a mix of wired and wireless cameras.

6) Set a budget. For just the cameras and DVR, plan on about $1,000. If you can do the installation, great - otherwise, plan on that expense. Again, we don't know the layout... I suggest starting with a 8 or 9-camera DVR, but with 4 cameras. Example:
http://www.amazon.com/DVR8-3200-Channel-Digital-Recorder-SWDVK-832004S-US/dp/B00GBYMUNO
The DVR has a large internet hard drive, 4 cameras get you started and when you want to add more, you have capacity. You do not need to use Swann cameras... but these
http://www.amazon.com/Swann-SWPRO-760CAM-US-Pro-760-Wide-Angle-Camera/dp/B008B4K7O6
I like a lot.

If you choose to use only 4 cameras for your stated purpose, no big deal - add cameras to the front and side of the house if you want... or leave the channels unused.

7) You can provision the DVR to send you email when there is an "alarm". If you set up the motion detection areas, that can be an "alarm". Be careful with this - you can end up spamming yourself with unnecessary email alarm alerts.

8) If you are familiar with how routers work, you can set up remote access through your home's router and get into the DVR remotely (after you get an email alert) using a smartphone with an installed client or a computer (Windows or Macintosh).

9) POWER:
if you are concerned about power outages and losing video then some sort of power back-up will be needed. This is where the wired cameras are easier - with the power and video signal coming to a single place, the DVR and all cameras can be plugged into a "UPS" commonly used for computers. And if the DVR is located near the computer network router, that can be plugged into the UPS, too. If "wireless" cameras are used, then each camera will need its own battery backup power supply.

How is the Mac notebook better or worse than pc notebooks?

BabyJ

I am a college student and does a lot of work like writing papers, graphic arts, research, etc..From your experiences which system runs better.

what are the technical differences?
Which is a better investment?
what do you suggest is a good notebook to get.

Preference
Size: 13"-14.1"
Price: up to $2000

Answer
From my experiences, Macs are always superior to Windows machines. It's not so much about hardware as it is about software. Mac notebooks use essentially the same hardware as PC notebooks, but Macs are better engineered. Apple engineers their own logic boards (or motherboards) and carefully plans how it's components will fit together, making the thinest, lightest notebooks possible. Mac OS X, being a more advanced operating system than Windows, will give you long battery life, ease of use, stability and unrivaled security. Despite what the PC cheerleaders tell you, there's tons of great software available for the Mac. I do a lot of different things on my Mac, from recording music to editing video and photos. I haven't found one single task that a Mac can't do better than a PC. Macs aren't plagued with the malware found in the Windows world. Why? It's not lack of users or low market share. The sole reason Macs are more secure is the fact that Mac OS X is based on solid Unix. Yes, Macs can be a little more expensive initially, although not by much, but you'll be saving money in the long run. You won't need to upgrade your hardware just to run the next version of Mac OS X. Macs have a much longer life span than PCs. A seven year old iMac can still run the latest version of Mac OS X. You won't have to waste any money on anti-virus software, as well as any system resources. The Mac would be the wisest investment. I know it's been mine. Macs work well because Apple designs both the hardware and software. It's this closed system that allows the Mac to "just work." You'll never get this kind of hardware and software integration in a PC.

If you have a $2,000 budget, I highly recommend the $1,999 MacBook Pro. I have a 15" MacBook Pro myself and I love it. It's light, thin, has a bright display, built-in iSight camera, backlit keyboard, DVD burner... It's got a lot.

http://www.apple.com/macbookpro/

-==============================-

Okay you two, listen up. If you compare Macs to PC with the same exact specs, the price difference is trivial. It's like comparing Dell to HP. You missed my point about Apple designing their own hardware. Yes, other companies manufacture the logic board... Look at the inside of a Mac Pro or iMac and tell me that they just buy that logic board and shove it in there. No. The logic board is built to Apple's specs. It's all about better engineering. If it weren't then why would Apple have the lightest, thinest notebooks? What about the iMac? How do they pack all of that computer into that tiny space? Exactly. As for security... I'm still waiting for someone to break into to my Mac. It hasn't happened yet. Did I say it was impossible? No, but it sure isn't as easy as breaking into a Windows machine. If you can't understand why Unix is more secure than Windows, then you have no reason to be making this claim.

So, you're going to take excerpts from a Mac help site to use them in this argument? I have a better idea, instead of taking excerpts from a Mac-only site, why don't you take a look at all of the questions posted here on Yahoo! Answers. Just look at how many more Windows-related problems there are than Mac problems. Make note of the severity, as well. How many Mac users do you see with virus and spyware problems? That's right. None. Most Mac problems are caused by the user, not the system. Most Mac problems are easily fixed, within minutes. You didn't mention that, did you? I was a PC user long enough and have answered enough Mac-related questions to know that I'm right and you're just an ass-speaker.

Mac to PC intriguing question?

Q. I have a MacBook Pro and I sometimes like to run Windows on my Mac to take advantage of all the software out there. When I am using the Windows on my Mac, does this open my MacBook to viruses that otherwise wouldn't be a problem?

But warning... Mac OS X is not as secure as you think

SECURITY
Mac OS X was hacked in 2006 less than 30 minutes, and within 2 minutes in a contest in 2008, and within 10 seconds in 2009. In 2008, Linux and Vista were not hacked until another day when restrictions were lowered. Vista was next, and then Linux. In 2009 Windows 7 fell shortly after the Mac but Linux was unscathed.
Macs are standardized with Cameras, if your Mac gets hacked, the hacker can turn on your camera with more ease.
Please Note: All OS's have vulnerabilities.
