Does the security cameras at my job have audio?

Q. It seems like my boss knows everything that goes on outside of his office and his door is closed. Is it possible that he can hear the conversations through the security cameras in the ceiling?

Answer
It's possible. But having a security camera running 24/7 with video and audio takes mass amounts of storage since the data isn't compressed.

It's more likely someone tells your boss what is going down.

what are some good but cheap wireless security cameras/audio i can hook up to my laptop?

Jake

possibly ones i can hide so burglars wont see them and shoot them out like the other ones

Answer
There are tons of good cameras, but then you went and added CHEAP into the mix. LOL
There are some really small ones like the "finger cam" http://www.pimall.com/nais/fingercam.html you can easily hide the thing. Or some of the "spy" cams like these http://www.dynaspy.com/mini-wireless-spy-camera-24ghz-color-spycam-p-28.html?osCsid=mln2hkand4hnchgifm4in9kr96

I found some at a "Hamfest" which were about the size of a penney and needed even a smaller opening to allow them to see out. If you really need audio, that is a different issue entirely. The "inteli spy" comes close to what you asked http://www.intelspy.com/24ghzmiwiauc.html small, cheap, with microphones. You will have to convert the output to use it with your laptop but that isn't hard to do.

how do you install indoor security camera?

pookie

I would like to buy a small security camera so I can monitor my home (indoor) when I'm away in a different state. I already have Skype and a camera hooked up an am online. I do not leave my computer on 24/7; I shut it off at night. What all do I need? can I use the camera I have now or do I need to buy a 'security' camera?

Answer
You need to buy a security camera. Regular cameras do not have the same connections that you would need for a security system. You a DVR, and hard drive INSTALLED, cameras, cables, power supply and splitter. Monitor of course but you can use any monitor or tv screen you already have. Most DVRs now have the capability to view the video when you are away from another pc or MAC or from your phone, assuming that you have a smart phone. They are pretty afforadble and convenient, and provide you with peace of mind. You should check out http://www.cctvdirectbuy.com, they provide a large variety of products and help you customize a kit to meet your needs. And their prices are really great.

How do I watch recorded surveillance off my new DIY Security Camera Kit?

MissWorthw

I installed a DIY Security Camera Kit in my store and I connected it to a small TV monitor. The audio and video lines are connected from the receiver to the monitor. I keep playing around with the menu options on the TV itself and going through the channels I just can't seem to figure out how to watch yesterday's recordings. I'm sure I would've found it if I had it connected to my desktop monitor instead of the tv monitor but if someone can help me out I'd appreciate it thanks. Oh and btw I did check the manual it's just one of those simple basic directions with diagram how to install it but nothing about watching recorded video.
Thank you for answering..okay it's just a cheap little kit I got here. I wish I had a model number or SOMETHING but all it says is:
DIY Security Camera Kit - Mini Wireless Color Camera with Microphone
I found a youtube video a guy installing it to his laptop but that's all I got. Here is the link..I appreciate your help

Answer
You know what would help? Manufacturer's name, model number of the kit and possibly even a web site we could check out. At this point there is no way anyone can give you a reasonable answer since we really don't know what you have. How do you know that the kit you bought records? If the manual doesn't talk about it then I would have to guess that it doesn't. Of course I could be all wrong. However without any specific information from you it is hard to determine anything.

addendum. Ok so you have something that looks like this?

http://www.securitymaninc.com/product/minairwatch.html

If so, then what you bought does not have any built in recording capabilities. In order to record video you need to hook it up to a recorder of some sort.

How to remote view your home security cameras while away from home?

Ramhat L

Answer
So you have installed a home security camera system at your home, or are planning to install one. That is great news, because you can start using your camera system to prevent problems as well as provide evidence if vandalism or theft occurs. But if you are currently in the market for a home security camera system, then you might want to consider some of the added features that are available. Many home security camera systems can provide you the ability to view your cameras while you are away from home over the internet. But it is important to look for certain things when you are considering a remotely viewable home security camera system.

I think the best for you is to read this entire article which is exactly about: Remote View Your Home Security Cameras While Away From Home

Cheap home security camera system?

conejo

I am in the market for an inexpensive home security camera system. Basically I need a way to watch my car at night because my neighbor is a douche. I would prefer something I can easily view with my phone. Any suggestions?

Answer
If you have a home wireless you can get a wireless IP cam but you'd have to watch it all the time.
You can get a fake cam for $17. 2AAA batteries run a red led for about 16 mos.

Down the street from me. http://www.directron.com/cctv.html
You can try Costco or Walmart for a 4 chl system.

SECURITY SYSTEM help!?

How difficult would it be for a novice to install this system into their business? I am opening a retail store and I am interested in a security system but I am trying to cut cost.....IN other words I dont want to pay someone 300 bucks to install this bad boy for me? Is it that hard? Please help!!! thanks
http://www.samsclub.com/shopping/navigate.do?dest=5&item=341166&pCatg=5868
I am fairly good with directions and I understand most electronic directions! I guess....its from sam's so shouldnt it be consumer friendly

Answer
Good Thing I looked at the picture. Slight difference between a security system and a surveillance system. I hope you aren't expecting sirens to ring when someone walks in.
As for installation, unfortunately one of my customers bought the same unit from Costco here and they ended up having me install it.

Not a big deal, it is really easy. It comes with fixed length cables. 8 pin plug type similar to ethernet. The monitor itself is very large in comparison to anything modern I would sell. It does however have an RCA output for an extra monitor. The image quality is moderate at best, so don't expect any court submissable images or even the ability to recognize a face unless it is about 5 feet from the camera. Lenses are crap but if it is costs you are willing to cut...

Now for the actual valuable advice and things to consider.
- Don't aim the camera's at windows with the potential of bright sunlight behind them or the image will be washed out.
- Depth of field is a large consideration, do not expect the camera's to pick up detail over a large area - They are intended for small area's of focus. You may be able to see activity but images will be unintelligable.
- Florescent lights cause some image problems

If you do end up forking out the cash to have someone install a surveillance system for you, don't waste any money on this unit, any monkey with a screwdriver can install it why pay for that, have something decent put in - it will cost more than 300 bucks though.

Check out the video surveillance section on my website at http://www.keepsafesystems.ca. There is abut more information on there which may be of help

Good luck on your new business venture, it's a hard slug but definately worth it in the end.

Wireless Home Security Surveillance Camera system?

praveen

Hello,
For my house, i want to buy a wireless camera security surveillance system. Obviously, there are too many options. Can someone give me a feedback on any preferred brand or any feedback on what I should be looking for while buying this costly system? One potential option I found so far is
Swann SWDVK-825508 8-Channel Digital Video Recorder with Smartphone Viewing and 8 x PRO-550 Cameras
by Swann

Answer
For consumer grade systems, Swann and Lorex make fine equipment. I installed a Swann 8 channel (using only 4 cameras - but planning to add 4 more cameras later). The included/free SmartPhone app for remote viewing works well but can use lots of battery power as it is a stream of video over wifi. The included 8 cameras in the system you listed don't have a very far night vision "throw" (about 10 feet). Another option to consider is this 4-camera, 8 channel DVR kit
http://www.swann.com/s/products/view/?product=1530
plus four of these:
http://www.swann.com/s/products/view/?product=1144
Any camera with a composite video feed will work including those from Lorex, Q-See and others.

Consider adding a VGA monitor or TV (I use the "extra" video inputs on 4 TVs located in different rooms of the house so visibility is not so limited to a single place).

The system you linked us to is not a "wireless" system. The connection between the cameras and the DVR is a wired connection. The cable connecting these items has a connector for the video; a connector for power and a connector for limited pan/tilt/zoom control. (The zoom is the part that actually works - you would need a pan/tilt head in order for that capability to work and the zoom is digital zoom - not optical zoom). Keep this in mind: A single cable with multiple connectors connects the camera to the DVR and power.

In a wireless video system, the camera needs power (wire #1). The video is sent to a base station wirelessly. The base station connects to the DVR (wire #2) and power (wire #3). A "wireless" security camera uses more wires than a wireless system.
http://www.swann.com/s/products/view/?product=1028

The only thing "wireless" about the DVR kit in the link you provided us is that when the DVR is added to the computer network at your house, that wifi signal sending video to a smartphone or Windows computer is wireless.

Another option is to use IP network based security cameras but a dedicated computer (rather than a standalone DVR) is needed to be recording the video. These cameras tend to be a bit more expensive, especially it they are outdoor rated. And they need local camera power, too - so not exactly "wireless" either. Because they become a node of the local house's computer (IP) network, the complexity moves from the analog camera cabling to computer network implementation.

In either case, making the video stream available to a computer or a smartphone - locally or remotely - requires a decent knowledge of computer network configuration (especially if the computer network is to be secure).

What is so great about a BlackBerry?

PinWheels

Answer
Two words--> Push email.

I have an 8703e on Verizon. Pricey, but I'm slightly hooked.

What's push email? Basically, you sign up with blackberry once you get your phone, and you get emails as you would texts on other mobile phones.

Consider this: When someone sends you a text, how long does it take? It's practically immediate, right? Do you have to do anything? No. The phone communicates with the network (and vice-versa)...and voila...you have a new text message. It's the same thing with a Blackberry...but with email.

Now, besides this, you also have an internet browser, task manager, calendar, contact list, Word Doc/Excel viewer, Powerpoint viewer, Blackberry messenger (Instant messaging among BB users), games, blackberry maps (w/ GPS on some carriers), etc.

Of course, there are some 3rd party apps. I'm fairly certain that you can purchase an app that allows you to create Word Docs, Excel sheets, etc. Although, how often would you want to sit there and type an entire document? Although, I have found that I tend to use Outlook quite less since getting a Blackberry.

Some consumer models have a phone built in. However, many of the corporate models (such as mine) do not. The reason given is usually for security purposes. Just think--every executive with access to sensitive documents having a camera on hand at all times. Great, huh?

But anyway, one of the draws of the iPhone is the "real page view." Check out Opera Mini 4 Beta. They've developed this for other phones such as the Blackberry. Now, it doesn't have the "auto-rotate" feature that the iPhone has, but I find that it's enough for me.

Also, part of the "what's so great" happens with ownership. The phone is quite an addiction. I suggest testdriving one to see why. Hence, the "crackberry" nickname. Although the iPhone might be equally appealing, BB users as a whole recognize their devices usefulness and lore.

You don't need to buy some high-tech things to make your iPhone a security camera.
Just download skype and make an email ID for skype
Add your contact to the new skype email
Video chat with the new email and hang the iPhone where you want.
Done.
This is not you wanted to hear but it still works
DIDN'T UNDERSTOOD ME?
JUST VIDEO CHAT AND PUT YOUR IPHONE WHERE YOU WANT THAN SEE AROUND THROUGH THE VIDEO.
I think nothing will get lost but your iPhone

how much would security cameras for a small business would cost me?

Auburn P

i want to find out if there is a good security company out there and what do they offer how much per month

Answer
I believe you do not pay for camera security monthly unless you were making payments.. What you generally do is by the equipment and have it installed and that is that.
If you wanted security, then you would hire a night time watchman or something like that, which could be as expensive as 5,000 a week. It all depends on budget.
I recommend you find a good company that will install cameras and good ones at that :)

Can a business LEGALLY use security cameras anyway they see fit?

Dino

I work for a company that has installed security cameras throughout the building and surrounding areas. I was wondering if legally they can use these cameras for their any objective.

Answer
Well, there are some limitations about how a business can use a security camera. The security cameras cannot be used in a bathroom, dressing room, or a break room. The security camera cannot be used to obtain private medical records. The video footage of employees cannot be used in commercials without the employee's approval. If the state has laws against recording audio without a person's permission, then the camera would not be allowed to record audio. This depends on the state you're in. Generally, the business is allowed to use the security camera to prevent theft, ensure worker productivity, and ensure that safety procedures are being implemented on the job (if applicable).

Can u netwk home devices (security cams, lighting, energy monitoring)without monthly fee?

amy

Building a new home and want to utilize the great features of home networking like remote monitoring of security cameras, change lighting, etc via Iphone app but want to avoid the monthly fees for monitoring services, etc. Any ideas?

Answer
I have been looking into the same things I believe what you want to do is available now. For security cameras, there are DVR systems and individual network cameras that allow the video to be streamed online. All you need is internet access and you can watch your cameras online. For home automation, the place that seems to have a reasonable amount of information is Smarthome.

What crafting, home decor, and/or fashion magazines can I subscribe to from the USA?

Alyssa

I'm looking for inspirational crafting, home decor, and/or fashion magazines that will ship to the USA. I found a magazine called Frankie, but it's only available in Australia as far as I could see. Google searches didn't bring up anything that fit what I need. The magazines I do NOT want: sewing, crocheting, knitting, embroidery, quilting.

I plan on reading these magazines and cutting them up after I've finished them, all to add these inspirational images and articles to an inspiration board, and turn the remainder into envelopes for snail mail.

Please help?

Alto songs like "I want to go to hollywood" and "Don't rain on my parade?

(=~*Amy*~=

I don't have a very big range. I'm an alto, and I prefer singing lowish songs. I sometimes sing tenor too. One song that I can sing full on through is I Can Hear The Bells from Hairspray and Mama Who Bore Me from Spring Awakening. Maybe that can give you an idea of my range?

I'd like to find any song that good for auditions/preforming. Any song genre as well, just not country or rap.

With both these songs I can't sing the ending belt notes they sing. But everything before that I think I sing it pretty well. Are there any songs that you guys would have in mind that I can sing?

Thanks !!

Security Cameras?

Ryan

is there a way to view security cameras online from stores all over the united states?

Answer
yes, but MAJOR security breach and hacking are involved. But only a certain percentage know how to operate such tasks and most of them turn out to be criminals.

But there is a way to look at every camera in a building. All you have to do really is just look for a wire that connects to the monitor and the camera, cut it, add a second wire to connect to your screen either wirelessly or wired.. and there you go... But if your planning to do something illigal, dont do this, you'll find your self going to prison for invasion / hacking (Im guessing a couple of years in prison)

hidden security cameras?

jason_nars

do any hidden servalance camare record onto a chip that is not hook into anything or are there any that record from the camera to a hard drive without a computer or monitor present and how many hours of video can be stored on them

Answer
IP cameras are every where and are monitored usually at an external site (sometimes thousands of miles away). This is for security reasons, so someone cannot just steal the hard drive and be gone.

The security systems are able to store terabytes of information in real time or when set off by a motion detector. Of course the times are recorded both in local and at the security center times.

Some IP cameras are wired to a broadband connection and others are wireless (WiFi) and connect to the broadband connection that way. Some use solar power with a battery and others are connected to the mains.

Outdoor security camera system?

Casey

We have recently installed a chain link fence behind our home and are planning on letting our great pyreneese out during the day when we are at work so she is not kept in her kennel. We have an awning for shade and shelter, and we will be home around 4:30 or 5:00 each day to check on her. With that being said, we have had issues somewhat in our neighborhood, due to a busy road behind our house. I am not comfortable leaving my dog outside all day or at any time actually without some sort of security system to monitor and video my dog, in case someone was to stop or try to pester etc my dog. I have looked online and have found a ton of outdoor security cameras, however, I have no idea what I am even looking for. I want something that records so that if I come home and somethings amiss, I can check the recording to see what happened that day. I also am needing this to be wireless and obviously weatherproof. All information, models, reviews etc are greatly appreciated.
Rick B......If I find something amiss, the camera will help me to identify the vehicle that had stopped....I never once said my backyard was unsafe...I said we have had issues in the past (such as speeding cars....stolen lawn items) believe me I would not let my dog play outside if the area was a danger zone and I thought she would be harmed or killed, however, as a responsible adult, I would like to have eyes on the area when I cannot be around. I am very proud of you for taking such good care of your pet. I too live in a nice community outside of town, with a covered patio and a wooden fence surrounding my patio, both with gates and a doggy door for my 80 lb dog to retreat too if needed. I also have a locking gate on our chain link fence surrounding the rest of our yard. Once again, I never said that my area was a danger zone, but yes, I live in reality where every great once in a while there is a bratty kid that comes by speeding, or steals my neighbors lawn ornaments. I have d

Answer
Two types of systems:

1) Analog cameras connect to a DVR. The DVR connects to the computer network at your house. The DVR has the feature/functionality for the cameras (i.e., motion detection, send you email when an alarm event is triggered, local video storage for later review, etc.).

2) IP-network based cameras connect to the computer network at the house. The camera becomes a network node. For local video storage, a Network Video Recorder (NVR) is used.

Both methods have pros and cons. What I have found:

1) "Wireless camera" is an inaccurate description. The camera needs power (wire 1). For the first option, the wireless video signal is sent to a base station (or receiver). The receiver plugs into the DVR (video signal) and power (wires 2 and 3). Usually, these cameras are transmitting in the 2.4 Ghz range. This is a shared spectrum and can have interference from lots of sources - including wifi, garage door openers and cordless phones.

2) IP network cameras seem to be more expensive than the analog cameras. The imaging chip seems to be the first thing to go on any security camera, so I use the analog cams (connected to a DVR). The decent consumer cams start at about $150 or so. Less than this and I find myself replacing them at least annually - but at this price point (or higher), they seem to last a bit longer.

3) Because the DVR is on the network and maintains the features for the cameras - including network connectivity for remote viewing and storage, the cameras can be "dumb" = less expensive.

4) Set a budget. I like/use Swann and Lorex gear. It is more expensive than some others, but I have learned (the hard way) that you get what you pay for.

5) We don't know the yard layout. Generally, I would install cameras under the eaves of the house so they have some protection from the elements. We don't know where you are, but extreme heat and cold are not good for electronics. Installing under the eaves helps protect them from the elements (even though they are outdoor rated). If there are environmental extremes in your area, plan to replace the cameras often - or install them in protective housings. This also makes access to power a little easier if you go the wireless route. If you go with wired cameras, then running the single cable between a camera and the DVR may also be easier. That single cable has a couple of plugs on each side - one for power one for video.

You can have a mix of wired and wireless cameras.

6) Set a budget. For just the cameras and DVR, plan on about $1,000. If you can do the installation, great - otherwise, plan on that expense. Again, we don't know the layout... I suggest starting with a 8 or 9-camera DVR, but with 4 cameras. Example:
http://www.amazon.com/DVR8-3200-Channel-Digital-Recorder-SWDVK-832004S-US/dp/B00GBYMUNO
The DVR has a large internet hard drive, 4 cameras get you started and when you want to add more, you have capacity. You do not need to use Swann cameras... but these
http://www.amazon.com/Swann-SWPRO-760CAM-US-Pro-760-Wide-Angle-Camera/dp/B008B4K7O6
I like a lot.

If you choose to use only 4 cameras for your stated purpose, no big deal - add cameras to the front and side of the house if you want... or leave the channels unused.

7) You can provision the DVR to send you email when there is an "alarm". If you set up the motion detection areas, that can be an "alarm". Be careful with this - you can end up spamming yourself with unnecessary email alarm alerts.

8) If you are familiar with how routers work, you can set up remote access through your home's router and get into the DVR remotely (after you get an email alert) using a smartphone with an installed client or a computer (Windows or Macintosh).

9) POWER:
if you are concerned about power outages and losing video then some sort of power back-up will be needed. This is where the wired cameras are easier - with the power and video signal coming to a single place, the DVR and all cameras can be plugged into a "UPS" commonly used for computers. And if the DVR is located near the computer network router, that can be plugged into the UPS, too. If "wireless" cameras are used, then each camera will need its own battery backup power supply.

Need help w/ outdoor security camera system.?

I need to buy an outdoor security camera system. Night vision and distance are a must. Need at least 4 cameras. Any recommendations? This will be my first security cam purchase so any info will be greatly appreciated! oh yeah, I'd prefer a reasonably priced system... Like maybe below $600 and still a good system. Thanks for the help 8-)

Answer
Hello

Peter that is the worst advise I have heard in a long time Costco, Walmart and online companies like Lorex (coscto sells lorex) sell very low quality cameras and often don't offer watermark so there images cant even hold up in court.

Giving advice when you don't know what your talking about is like giving direction to a place you don't now where it is, all you doing is wasting there time and in this case there money too.

The cameras from costco and walmart are used as nanny cameras that's all there good for.
Most IR cameras give you about 1/3 of the vision as advertised they call it "projected" distance now this had no coloration with what the camera will actually see at night.

A Varifocal (can change what the camera can see) lens with a good aperture 2 good examples are 5-50mm or 2.9~10mm. A fixed lens almost never works when installing a camera outdoors. Again to ensure you are getting a good lens and optics stick to name brands and avoid online retailers, eBay, Swann Lorex, Costco and Q see and other cheap no name products.

Also if you are buying good cameras get a decent DVR.

A good outdoor Camera will have

High resolution (520TVL or higher)
Good signal to noise ratio (S/N 49DB or 50DB)
A true Sony CCD (not Chinese knockoff)
Rugged enclosure to handle vandals and environments
At least IP 66 and a suitable temperature rating for you region
IR LED's to see in pitch dark: active IR rating not projected IR as projected IR has no coloration with how far the camera can see.
2 or 3 different sized LED;s 1 size LED one type of illumination means you either wont get distance or wide angle and you want both.

I would go with the VIS-56IR-2910

this camera will give you 110 feet of clear vision in complete darkness and great images by day its the on I recommend for budget customer who need outdoor IR camera.

Not all CCTV equipment is created equal, in fact there are many options that offer varying performance much like the automobile industry. In the world of CCTV you can find the equivalent of a $2,000 golf cart and a $350,000 Ferrari and everything in between. Both have 4 wheels but that's where the similarities end, itâs under the hood that counts.

Just like any other consumer electronic in the end you get what you pay for. Most retailers and sellers make about a 40-80% profit margin, this is after costs like shipping and overhead. That means when you buy a product that costs $100.00 the manufacturer usually has only spent $30 to build it which simply means itâs not a good product and will probably have a working life of about 2 months. There is a reason these products are 1/10 of the price of good and reliable DVR brand names. The type of seller these products attract are online sellers (ebay) and will make profits margins as low as 2% which means they canât afford to offer good service or allow for RMAs (returns). Cheap products are like disposable razors they are NOT designed to last for a long time and you will end up replacing them every 2 months.

Reasons to get an iPhone/Why iPhones are better than Android?

UnknownAsk

I currently have the Galaxy S Aviator by Samsung, which by now is a bit dated. My phone carrier is finally getting the iPhone this summer and I really want one because I'm not very impressed with the droids I have had. I need reasons on why to get an iPhone that my droid doesn't already have, for example, Siri.

how much privacy is Android Apps taking from me ?

jamesmcoy

hey,

i recently bought a smart phone (android) and while i was bowsing apps i was shocked by what information they wanted.

some of them say ``read phone calls`` read text messages ect......

does that mean they can tap my phone calls, read my txts ??

and why exactly would they want to read phone calls for an app like dictionary ?

all answers are welcome :)

i`m getting the feeling that 1984 george orwell is really upon us !!!!

thanks in advance )

Answer
omfg...

1984 is APPLE!... 1 phone.. 1 man.. 1 company.. utopian soceity being told what to do, how to do it, and, like Steve Jobs said to his loyal fan base--- DEAL WITH IT! Google Made Android to combat the onslaught of Steve Job's and Apple's 1984 Draconian Future!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! With Android, your free to use it any way you want... and if your can do something with Android... make the app yourself or find the app to make it do it... you NOT limited and told to live your life According to Google... Google gioves your freedom.. It endorses Rooting.. It loves Rooting.. It made Nexus Class phones, which have NO carriers or manufactur lock and kernels... its already rooted pre-boxed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Apple would kill its fans if they got ahold of a "jailbreaker"... Saying Google is leading the 1984 revolution is a big huge INSULT! go to youtube and see the Google I/O 2010 conference... and tell me if google has 1984 on its mind!!!!!!!!!!! geeesh!

First, understand the difference between Android OS (an open source program(anti 1984)/firmware that anyone can build off of and make better) and hardware (the plastic and metal that make your phone)...

Android, since its open sourced (anti 1984), needs permissions to use hardware. Its not built into its coding. Android isnt FORCED to use the hardware... its open sourced.. This is why Androids are on so many make/models.. gotta love open source! Go LINUX... anyways!... ok cool, so it needs hardware permissions... you hit the camera button and walla... camera... you hit SEND and walla, a phone call... there more to it, but for you, ill leave it at that.... so....... what about Android Apps???? Since they are based in Linux and Android OS too, they require permissions from Android in order to run properly... not hardware permssions, since Android does that... they need Android permissions.. program permissions... get the drift...

In your dictionary App example, Permission "Phone Call", which controls phone calls, call log, history etc, contacts, etc, doesnt mean hacking your personal info and selling it to Al-Queda... If it did, Google wouldnt allow it on the market. LMFAO.... think people think!!!!!!!! Dictionary needs that Permission in case you type in a name and mispelled it, so dictionary can fix it for you. Or went into contacts to make a new contact or edit a contact and mispell names, locations, address, personal notes&messages, emails, etc... that is why dictionary need that permission... Not to ruin your life... but to make it better! If your paranoid, then dont download the app!

Wanna get really paranoid??????? Lets talk about a simple Mobile Banking App... Why would that need "Phone Call" Permission??????? Well, if you want to call your bank directly from within the app instead of closing the banking app, opening call app, trying to remember the banks dept. phone number. etc etc etc ... get the drift????????? just tap "call" in the app and walla... it calls the bank...

There are tons of permissions for Android.. Most developers are starting to put "REASONS FOR PERMSSIONS" in the App description on the Market, to calm the schizophrenics down and to keep the worried Americans, like you, who are scared about "being hacked"...

And, if your EVER worried about an app and your security... either email the developer regarding why it needs permissions (given that not everyone reading this is tech savy like me and understands PERMISSIONS)... or simply... dont download the app... you may also wanna go back to a flip phone too..... at least Android shows you the permission... that more than I can say about iphone, windows phone, blackberries, etc.... I wonder what THEIR PERMISSIONS ARE... hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

What DVR software can I use for this security camera?

Allan

I have no idea how (nor do I think its possible) to connect my GE Home Security camera to my Mediacom or DirecTV DVR. So the only way is to hook it up to the PC which I have done.

This is the camera http://www.jascoproducts.com/products/pc/GE-Home-Monitoring-Wireless-Color-Camera-System-with-Receiver-47p571.htm#details

And this is how I hooked it up http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3504456&CatId=1428

I have tried the GBPVR DVR software and have no idea how to set it up. the Sabrent USB video/audio capture came with Coral VisualStudio 12 and it shows the camera and I am able to record... However, at night or when we leave we have to record and it takes up nearly 8gb for 7 hours. We simply don't have that much HD space, nor do we want to spend extra getting a new HD unless we get a DVR software that lets use record 2 hours at a time, with a timestamp so we know what time it was recorded.

Is there anyway you can help me? I am tempted to get a Security DVR but I don't want to pay $400+ for one if nothing ever happens. So right now what I am trying to do is either use my current DVR's as the recording device. or my PC which I have succeeded but need different software that finds the device.

Please answer asap :)

Answer
Interesting question. These days, most homeowners don't use a DVR for home video, and DVR's are left to the commercial applications where they really need to have constant recording for cash registers, employee security, etc. Today's smart cameras are wireless and have motion analytics built into them, so that the camera only records (usually a clip, like 15 seconds) when activated by motion. You really don't care if nothing is going on, right? The clips can be sent directly to you. These cameras can also be viewed remotely from any web-enabled device - and what's even better, the video clips can be stored remotely by your service provider, where you can access them. See? No DVR required.

What I am describing is actually the video service that we include with our cellular and interactive monitoring services: next-gen features, integrated with home security Here is a link to the video section of our web site:

http://www.frontpointsecurity.com/wireless-security-equipment/wireless-security-cameras

This may not be a viable solution for you, but just want you to know what's out there, and the direction the industry is taking.

Surveillance & security Cameras?

emuleiii

I want to install some Surveillance & security Cameras for my house. outside window. i am thinking maybe 3 sides of my house . front side, drive way side and the back side of my house. good enough to cover whoever can get into my driveway and back yard....
Which brand and model is the best ? i want something relatively easy to install and use . better something can just record directly to my computer.

Answer
For home use, recorded to computer, webcams work as well as anything else. Make sure the resolution is 640x480, plug 'em in, and you're set.

As for brands and all... there are only a few manufacturers, but the cams are sold under many brand names.

Many big-box home improvement stores, stores like Costco and Sam's Club, and even large department stores, sell security systems now. Cost can run from a hundred bucks for a simple system, to many thousands of dollars.

Look for the following:
1. Video is recorded in a standard format, like AVI. Real AVI, not some proprietary container format that requires the DVR software to work with. IF you need the video for something, you want everyone to be able to see it. Proprietary software is a pain in the posterior, and gets in the way more than anything else.
2. Resolution of at least 640x480. If you have the storage, even higher. Don't let anyone tell that 160x120 is "good enough", I can guarantee that it is most definitely NOT enough. Even 320x240, which is the default for many systems, is just barely good enough some of the time, and useless more of the time.
3. You don't need to store the video for years, but you need to have at least 7 days before the system rolls over and records on top of old video.
4. YOU need to know how to operate the equipment. Don't expect somebody else to come in and extract an event for you.

I don't install video systems, I'm the guy that has to retrieve the video off the system, and then try and make it into something useful. If you follow the 4 things I mention, your video will be of much more use in case you ever need it.

What is the best security camera for night?

Mike

I live out in the country and have been robbed recently. I currently have security cameras, but they are not the best of quality. I have a 4 channel DVR from Lorex and all the cords are ran already so I would perfer wired cameras. Without spending lots of money, what's the best bang for my buck? I need to see clearly at night about 100 feet. Also too, does having too many lights effect the IR of the camera? Is less or more IR rating of camera better? Thank you.

Answer
This camera is probably one of the best security cameras out there. It has a 65' illumination range, its indoor/outdoor, has 23 LEDs and has high resolution (700 TVL)

The second camera is pretty similiar, same brand and everything, but has a 100' illumination range and 36 LEDs.

The IR switches on when the light around the camera is 0 lux or below. If you leave a light on by the cameras all night they'll never switch over to IR mode, but if it is dark by the camera they should switch over. The light sensitivity or IR rating is how much light there needs to be for the camera to switch modes, the cameras I listed have a sensitivity of 0 lux, which means if there is less light out than a candle would provide, the camera will switch to IR mode.

security camera help!?

i own a motel and have a big parking lot.

i would like to have a camera system that would have 8 cameras, i would be able to watch it over the internet and record on a dvr. i was wondering what kind would be good to buy and which is the best brand . if i could i would like to have zoom on a camera so i can zoom in and see good quality picture.

if some one could help me that would be great.
thanks

Answer
Nathan that is the worst advice I have heard if you don't know about CCTV products please do not post and mislead people tigger direct sell complete junk.

Now some products can be made cheaply like ipod cases, screen protectors, and other simple products with no moving parts or electronics. DVRs need to be good quality as they run 24/7 (20X more than the average electronic device) and process anywhere from 30-480 frames per second which in a year is over 15 billion images, and a good DVR should last 3-5 years.

A true DVR and camera require years of research and development to facilitate the seamless integration of both the hardware and software. DVRs are highly complex systems that must run 24/7, processing millions of images per day and are one of the few products that canât be made both well and cheaply. Cheap and inexpensive products like Q-see, X10, Swan, Lorex, and other low grade DVRâs and cameras sold by Tiger Direct, Newegg, radio shack Sams Club, are not used by any security professional and should only be used by hobbyists.

To be honest Swan sells complete Garbage and is not used by anyone who has worked with CCTV or security products. I know other manufactures who used the same product as them and they felt they wee such poor quality they offered money back and replaced them at there cost. They are poor quality especially for IR cameras, due to low quality material, low S/N ratio, and c grade CCD image chips.

If you are only going to spend 70$ on cameras then you should buy 15 dummy cameras they will be just as effective and cheaper hen swan cameras.

Also as far as night vision or IR cameras go most do not give good images in the dark. Many companies claim good night vision but there are only a handful of brands who give night vision over 30 feet out doors. normally if a cameras is rated 150 feet of IR it will give you ok images at 30 feet at night and good images at about 20 if rated for 60 feet you might get 15 indoors and will be useless outdoors.

Some good CCTV brands that I recommend are Bosch, Pelco, Honeywell and Ascendent.

http://www.ascendentgroup.com (Great IR cameras)
www.honeywell.com
www.pelco.com/
http://www.bosch.com

Economical DVR's
Two good economical DVRs I would recommend are Ascendent's AVP-4120 DVR or Pelco's DX-400. They will allow you to view all your cameras instantly from anywhere in the world using either IE, or a client software. The AVP-4120 uses the latest H.264 codec to improve streaming and recording time, and will allow PCs and Apple computers to remotely view cameras. These are the DVRs I would recommend that are good quality and affordable from companies who stand behind there products.

Again if you are going to buy Swan products save money and get dummy cameras they are just as affective and you will be less disappointed.

I happen to know Ascendent is offering a special on a 4CH DVR and 4 cameras 2 of them are IR. http://dealer.ascendentgroup.com//cctvpaâ¦

Hope this Helps,

I have security cameras set up, what software can I use to record images?

Hygor

I have 3 IP cameras set up. And I can see them on the computer. What is a good program so that I record the images (I want it running 15-24 hours a day recording) into an external hardrive or something?

What's a good one? And what's a good cheap one?

I tried searching but I get a lot of overcomplicated responses. It shouldn't be that hard to just record the screen right?

Answer
IP cameras are a waste of Money compared to analog cameras.

Here is a DVR that will work perfectly for you.

http://ascendentdvr.com/x4sdvr/x4s-8240dvd.html

http://www.ascendentgroup.com/~ascendent/HTML%20E-mail/X4S/x4s.html (pricing is dealer so unless your a certified installed you will probably have to pay 25% more which is still a steal of a deal)

Just about any Analog DVR will do what you are looking for and not only display them but record them as well they will also allow you to view them over the internet from a Iphone or laptop.

Many people have a misconception that IP has Superior scalability then Analog but with the advancements with DVR's this simply isn't true, you cn do up to 16,000 cameras each camera could even be from a different DVR and a different site.

And when you are using the internet to connect multiple sites together analog transmits over the internet faster with less latency using less bandwidth allowing you not only to view and monitor a situation real time but also effective control PTZ cameras.

What is the Advantage of IP?
Many of the so called advantages of IP simply don't hold water in the real world, IP is mainly Hype and marketing and outside of a few niche applications such as 1 or 2 camera installs, where MP cameras are needed or large scale wireless projects which represent about 2% of the total CCTV market, IP has very few advantages compared to analog based on performance, cost and reliability. (yet all companies touting IP will often use MP cameras to demonstrate the advantages of IP)

IP video is more about marketing then it is about performance as larger companies like Bosch pelco Honeywell axis can change for both hardware and software and once you use there cameras you have to keep using there cameras unlike analog.

Also IP sounds great, plug and play, Better image quality, use existing infrastructure, who wouldnât want that unfortunately this is often not the case.

IP is like wireless (in theory its perfect) if that was true there would be no wired cameras or analog cameras it would all be wireless IP.

IP cameras are based on CMOS
Analog cameras are based on CCD (usually)

CCD image sensors contain hundreds
of thousands picture elements, called pixels. Each pixel contains a light sensitive element and a capacitor.

A CMOS sensor is constructed using a array of pixels, but unlike CCDâs CMOS do not have a capacitor to store the charge for each pixel. The rows of pixels are activated sequentially rather then individually

This means CMOS has some significant disadvantages compared to CCD, this means CMOS
have inferior ability to cope with ambient lighting such as back light, bright, deep shadows contrasts, low light and IR this is also known as the real word.

In short unless you have perfect lighting a good CCD camera will outperform an equivalent CMOS camera.

File Size:
The smaller the files size the more images that are able to be sent and the faster they can be processed improving both FPS and speed. File size is the heart of any DVR and goes far beyond just its streaming capabilities as it also determines the recoding storage time, how much you can back up at once, how fast it renders and searches video. (Ascendents X3 DVR achieves file sizes as low as .3KB on normal image quality on a CIF image no IP camera on the market will come close to this) The file size of a DVR impacts the performance of the DVR in just about every aspect from speed to longevity and is often the most import spec of any DVR.

IP cameras have up to a 5X larger file size then analog cameras. (at same resolution) I have seen MP cameras that on 2MP resolution are over 300X (%3000) larger then our X3 DVR on a CIF image. This is an extreme case but generally speaking IP cameras have a much larger file size.

Most routers and switches are not designed to handle IP cameras they have enough bandwidth but they are not able to process the amounts of commands. (9 IP cameras 30FP is 230 instructions per second) standard routers have enough bandwidth (up to 1GB) but cant handle the amount of tasks (instructions) so frames get dropped latency is introduced and the effectiveness of other devices such as POS, printers and dats storage can be affected and compromised.

IP is a young and emerging technology and I have no doubt that in the future it will outperform analog cameras but its not a mature technology yet. Once we start to get standard IP platforms, get rid of license feesâ and existing networks have larger bandwidths then IP video will be a good solution, but until then analog is the way to go.

Make sure you get good cameras as well, Ascendent has the best IR outdoor cameras on the market and are about %50 less then Bosch while offering triple the distance.

how to hook up a security camera?

Scott

could i hook up a security camera to a rental property and be able to see what is going on around the outside from my own house? If so how can I do that so I can be able to keep a eye on my property

Answer
Assuming that you can legally setup a security camera system it is not hard to find a system that will allow you to view the live or recorded feed from an internet or mobile connection.

Here is a list of systems that are compatible with iPhone/Smart phones or a web browser. They are also expandable in case you want more cameras later.

The good news about this site is they offer technical support to help you through the process of installation.

recomend security cameras?

bill

can you reccomend a good security system that will handle 3 cameras with motion detectors that can be viewed via remote access. please explain if possible.

thanks

Answer
Hello

Now when you ask for cameras with motion detector do you want them to be able to record only when there is motion, or do want them to have an actual motion detector inside of the,.

If you want them to be both a CCTV camera and a working motion detector I suggest Ascendents ASC-380PIR37.

link to the ASC-380PIR37
http://dealer.ascendentgroup.com//specialtycameras/31_1.html

If all you want is a camera that records when there is motion then all you need is CCTV cameras and a DVR. CCTV cameras put out 30FPS per second and send those images to a DVR it is then the dVR job to manage the video (decide when ans how to store the images, and allow you to remote connect to the cameras.)

the problem with viewing your cameras over the internet is most DVR file size is too large. File size is crucial to streaming because most DVRâs on the market record at real time performance (30FPS per channel) so on a 4CH is trying to send 120, 8CH 240, and a 16CH 480 images per second which requires way to much bandwidth even for the most extreme internet connections.

also uses the latest H.264 codec becasue it offers better quality,. While its file size sizes is 30% smaller than MPEG-4, 60% smaller than MPEG-2, and exponentially smaller than MJPEG.

Not all DVR are created equal In fact, there are many options that offer varying performance much like the automobile industry. In the world of DVR's you can find the equivalent of a $10,000 Kia and a $350,000 Ferrari and everything in between. Both have 4 wheels and windshield but that where the similarities end, itâs under the hood that counts. Just like any other consumer electronic in the end you get what you pay for.

If you are buying a DVR and streaming is a high priority I suggest get them to do a demo and connect to the DVR to make sure it is able to stream fast enough for your needs. Most DVR say they have Remote Viewing but it is often to slow and laggy to be of use. Some good DVR brands that I recommend are Bosch, Pelco, Honeywell and Ascendent.

www.ascendentgroup.com (Recommended)
www.honeywell.com
http://www.pelco.com/
http://www.bosch.com

Again I recommend going with a PC based DVR but if you don't want to spend the money I suggest Ascendent's AVP-4120 DVR or Pelco's DX-4000 as they will allow you to view all your cameras instantly from anywhere in the world using either IE. The AVP-4120 will also allow MAC platforms as well as PC to remotely view cameras and it uses the new H.264 codec but no standalone will offer the video streaming or performance a good PC based DVR will.

If you want to see how a good PC based DVR stream bellow are instructions on how to connect to Ascedent's X3L PC based DVR.

Instructions on how to connect to Ascendentâs DVR with Internet Explorer:

1) http://connect.ascendentgroup.com/ (Must be Internet explorer)
2) Install active X control
3) Hit âConnect)
4) DVR type PC
5) DVR code SITE-100
6) User ID Demo (case sensitive)
7) Password demo (lower case)
8) Hit extend config
9) IP address: 24.66.224.223
10) And hit connect

I hope this helps if yo have any other questions feel free to shoot me an email.

Where can I find a good camera security system?

Joey Tatum

I have been looking... I know i can get a system at SAM'S for 500 dollars but it only has 4 cameras... i haven't found one that is reasonable that may have 8+ cameras without paying thousands... I am visually impaired and we've been having some "snoopers" lately and want to beef up the security around the house (visual security with taping capabilities)... if you know of something good AND inexpensive, please tell me...

Answer
Good an inexpesive is a relative term. If you think 500 bucks for a DVR with 4 camera's is too expensive then forget about 8. - Personally, I would never buy the system you are looking at. My customers tend to expect quality and reliability as do I.

Typically speaking, retail camera's, like the type you are looking at, are fairly substandard when compared in quality to those on a professional level.

Your best bet is to go at it with some knowledge of the technology, I wrote an article on the subject awhile back but most of the info still applies. I have pasted some of it here. You can find more information on security related topics on my website at http://www.keepsafesystems.ca

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

The starting point of any C.C.T.V. system is the camera. Simply stated, a camera is a light sensitive device that converts particles of light into electrical impulses, however, there is a vast difference in the quality of cameras available to the consumer. Factors that differentiate the various cameras include whether they are color, black and white, light sensitivity, image resolution and image transfer technology. The consumer must also consider the inherent advantages and disadvantages in each of these different camera technologies and decide which features best fit their individual needs and goals.

In the past, color cameras have been both very expensive and lack-luster in their image performance, when compared to black and white cameras. New technology is now bringing the innovative technologies closer together in both the price and performance scale. The current differences between the two technologies are almost entirely limited to light sensitivity and light reactivity.

Light sensitivity is measured in LUX. The lower the LUX rating, the higher the sensitivity to light. It is important to keep in mind that even the best-rated cameras are limited by the technology of the day, as well as the visibility conditions present at the time of the surveillance. Although great advancements in low light surveillance continue to be ongoing, the image quality in a low light situation will rarely be up to the standards of daylight surveillance.

Color cameras, although much more appealing on the outside when compared to their black and white counterparts, generally offer less low light sensitivity than a black and white camera. The other advantage of black and white cameras over color cameras is its ability to "see" infrared light, which is invisible to the human eye. You can test this by aiming a standard television remote at a black and white camera while watching the monitor, the flashes you see are bursts of infrared light. The advantage of this becomes apparent in the ability to light up a dark area with infrared light, thus making images visible in almost pure darkness. With the color camera the area will appear unlit, however, to a black and white camera, the area will appear almost like daylight.

The black and white cameraâs reactivity to the invisible light spectrum can also pose a disadvantage in certain applications. Infrared light, although not visible to the human eye, is found in abundance in many everyday situations. For example, when aiming a black and white camera at hot pavement, it will "confuse" the camera resulting in an unbalanced image. Professional grade black and white cameras often incorporate infrared cut-filters. These cut-filters inhibit the infrared light spectrum in turn decreasing the cameras low light sensitivity.

The C.C.T.V. Industry measures image resolution in horizontal lines. The higher the line rating, the clearer the image will appear. With this fact in mind, consider that all electronic components within a C.C.T.V. System, from the camera, to the VCR, to the monitor. These items are all rated in the same way. The actual resolution of the entire system will only be as high as the lowest rated item. For example, if you have a camera rated at 450 lines and a monitor rated at 300 lines, then the result will be 300 visible lines of resolution because the monitor is the lowest rated item in this example. Another point to keep in mind is that the line rating is "Total lines" not lines per inch. Therefore a 12" monitor with a 300 line rating has a far better clarity than a 17" monitor with the same line rating.

The most recent and predominant advances in the C.C.T.V. Industry are the changes in image transfer technology. This technology deals with how the camera takes light particles and converts them into electronic images. Without going into too much detail, image transfer technologies include the following:

Phosphorus Tube Cameras - This camera has low quality, old technology and is susceptible to "image burn". Image burn is when intense light sources will burn themselves into the cameraâs light receptor resulting in the image appearing "memorized". Although this is not a problem with modern day cameras, image burn can still occur on monitors. Tube cameras are also known for poor low light sensitivity.

C.C.D - Also known as "Chip cameras". This camera is the most standard of cameras in the professional realm. C.C.D. cameras do not suffer from the problem of image burn and can incorporate various methods of signal processing, which offers a high level of flexibility to the installer.

CMOS Transfer Cameras - These cameras are very small and continue to get smaller as the technology advances. Although very attractive in their size, CMOS cameras generally do not offer the signal processing, image quality or low light sensitivity of the higher priced C.C.D. camera models. However, the technologies are slowly growing closer together to the point where CMOS cameras may eventually take over the Surveillance Industry.

The Surveillance Industry has continued to move towards the implementation of color cameras that switch to black and white, or even infrared in low light conditions. Although there are some models currently available on the market, the technology is not at a point where it is affordable enough to be manufactured on a large scale.

Which home security is the best to use and which is best rated?

Answer
Hello

Alarm system are outated a CCTV camera system does everything an alarm system does and it will pay or itself because there are no monthly fee's, plus you can view your property from anywhere in the world in real time using an i phone, android or PC.

http://www.ascendentgroup.com/home.htm

Here is a write-up that explains IP, analog and Hybrid CCTV systems and the pros and cons of each.

http://www.ascendentgroup.com/home.htm

Many people have a misconception that IP has Superior scalability then Analog but with the advancements of DVR's this simply isn't true, with our X3 DVR you can monitor up to 16,000 cameras using our Central management Suite each camera could even be from a different DVR and a different site.

What is the Advantage of IP?
Many of the so called advantages of IP simply don't hold water in the real world, IP is mainly Hype and marketing and outside of a few niche applications such as 1 camera installs, where MP cameras are needed or large scale wireless projects which represent about 2% of the total CCTV market, IP has very few advantages compared to analog based on performance, cost and reliability.

Analog transmits over the internet faster and uses less bandwidth this allows you view you cameras in real time and control PTZ cameras, IP has to much lag and latency to do either properly as it has to transmit and receive video over the network.

IP or Analog why choose ?
What Ascendent Technology has done is allowed our X4S standalone DVR's to work as IP servers to convert analog cameras into IP cameras ( 4/8/16ch) in a U1 or U2 rack mountable case. Its the best of both worlds a standalone DVR that works autonomously with storage, playback and search, with the features of IP cameras to distribute video over networks and record on NVR's making a humongous CCTV system powered by Ascendent's Tri-fusion platform. ( Ascendents oes not charge for their 64CH NVR/Client software )

Scalability and flexibility
Ascendent's standalone, PC- DVR's and IP cameras can record at one resolution and stream at another, its integrated VBR and CBR lets you manage the amount of data and bandwidth that is used by each camera individually giving you the security and reliability of analog with the flexibility and interoperability IP to offer unlimited expandability by adding 1-64 cameras at a time. Ascendent's X4 Trifusion platform integrates the X4 PC, X4S standalone DVRs, X4-IP-Pro and, IP HD mega pixel cameras simultaneously. The Tri-fusion platform not only manages video but can integrate access control, analytics, biometrics, building management, NVR/DVRs, and other 3rd party applications from the leading security providers.

Cost Effective
The X4 Trifusion platform takes full advantage or prior security investments and existing wiring infrastructures while offering the best of breed technology creating a cost effective long term solution to suite the needs of small business to global enterprises.(unlike most companies Ascendent does not charge for their software you buy an IP product it will ship with our 64CH NVR server/client software)

IP cameras are usually based on CMOS
Analog cameras are based on CCD (usually)

CMOS has some significant disadvantages compared to CCD, this means CMOS
have inferior ability to cope with ambient lighting such as back light, bright, deep shadows contrasts, low light and IR this is also known as the real word.

File Size:
The smaller the files size the more images that are able to be sent and the faster they can be processed improving both FPS and speed. File size is the heart of any DVR and goes far beyond just its streaming capabilities as it also determines the recoding storage time, how much you can back up at once, how fast it renders and searches video. The file size of a DVR impacts the performance of the DVR in just about every aspect from speed to longevity and is often the most import spec of any DVR.

Most routers are not designed to handle IP cameras they have enough bandwidth but they are not able to process the amounts of commands. (9 IP cameras 30FP is 230 instructions per second) standard routers have enough bandwidth (up to 1GB) but cant handle the amount of tasks (instructions) so frames get dropped latency is introduced effectiveness of other devices such as POS, printers and data storage are affected and compromised.

IP does have applications and in some cases IP cameras are the only way to do a project but I would estimate that for 95% of applications analog is cheaper and higher performance with a lower cost of ownership and better reliability.

The best solution is using analog cameras with dvr's that have the ability to convert analog cameras into IP devices, that have on site storage so you only stream video over the network when you are viewing your cameras either LAN or WAN or to and from multiple sites.

video surviellance security camera?

sbarber

i want to buy a security camera someone is stealing our property from our shed...any advice on a good solid system? thanks

Answer
Well of course you will need cameras, a monitor and a method to record like a DVR. I assume this is at night so you will need cameras with infrared illumination.

Here is a complete system from Costco.

See if you can set one camera up to get them in the act and other cameras to catch them approaching and departing from your property. Ideally catch their license plate if they drive up.

High Resolution Security Cameras?

cybergridl

I am looking for some high resolution security cameras that are outdoor and night vision. The cameras must be able to capture a license plate from 400 feet away on a vehicle moving at 15 mph. Does anyone know of brand of camera that can do this?

business question "antique mall owner needing security camera system" which is the best to buy?

sbarber

Just trying to get input from someone that has an antique mall of similar business. I want to purchase a camera system that I can set up in "EACH" booth or atleast every other booth. Some can be dummies but I would like for atleast half of them to be the real deal. I ahve heard of dealers using globes and dummy cameras to deter thieves; does this work?
What system would you recommend and please don't say a 10,000 one, I cant afford that at the moment.

Answer
Hello

Dummy cameras are the worst possible they don't provide security and if someone is injured or claims to be injured in your store they can sue for providing a false sense of security. No professional security installer uses dummy cameras.

Here is a DVR that will work perfectly for you.

http://www.ascendentgroup.com/x4s.htm

I would recommend a Standalone DVR as they are more reliable and since they are linux based they are virus ans spy ware free.

The X4S Series DVR is an intelligent and professional CCTV management solution, integrating the latest technology and the most advanced features while maintaining a simple, intuitive, and graphical interface. The X4S Series DVR is a 24/7 turn key solution that meets demanding security needs to suit industrial and commercial applications. The X4S DVR is compatible with the X4 platform, allowing it to act as an IP server, while still remaining a standalone solution and allows you to view your cameras instantly over the internet with a PC or cell phone like the I-phone.

also here is some information on DVR and cameras you may want to read before buying a CCTV system.

Not all DVRs and security equipment are created equal, in fact there are many options that offer varying performance much like the automobile industry. In the world of DVRs you can find the equivalent of a $10,000 Kia and a $350,000 Ferrari and everything in between. Both have 4 wheels and windshield but that where the similarities end, itâs under the hood that counts. Just like any other consumer electronic in the end you get what you pay for.

I suggest you buy a PC based DVR has they have more processing power and normally have a much smaller file size and offer more features then Standalone DVR's. I know many people buy a cheap standalone DVR, only to upgrade to a PC based in 6 months especially when they are using it to manage a store remotely. Also PC based allows you to record up to 64 cameras where a standalone will have a limit of 16.

Many people have the misconception that a PC-Based DVR is simply an off-the-shelf PC with video capture (encoder) cards, display (decoder) cards and some generic OEM software. A true DVR requires years of research and development to facilitate the seamless integration of both the hardware and software. DVRs are highly complex systems that must run 24/7, processing millions of images per day. This makes consumer-level hardware inadequate for DVRs which is why Ascendent uses custom-built PCs with performance-level hardware.

My personal favorite DVR is Ascendent X4 series: Ascendentâs Tri-Fusion Hybrid Platform allows for the creation of a true hybrid surveillance system by utilizing the advantages of Analog, Megapixel, and IP technologies for unparalleled customization and expandability.

The X4 also uses the latest H.264/SVC codec offer video substantially better quality,. While its file size sizes is 30% smaller than MPEG-4, 60% smaller than MPEG-2, and exponentially smaller than MJPEG.

File size is crucial to streaming because most DVRâs on the market record at real time performance (30FPS per channel) so on a 4CH is trying to send 120, 8CH 240, and a 16CH 480 images per second which requires way too much bandwidth even for the most extreme internet connections.

The smaller the files size the more images are able to be sent, and the faster they can be processed improving both FPS and speed. File size is the heart of any DVR and goes far beyond just its streaming capabilities, as it also determines the recording storage time, how much you can back up at once, how fast it renders and searches video. The file size of a DVR impacts the performance of the DVR in just about every aspect from speed to longevity and is often the most important spec of any DVR.

If you are buying a DVR and streaming is a high priority I suggest you ask for a demo and connect to the DVR to make sure it is able to stream fast enough for your needs. Most DVRs say they have remote viewing but it is often too slow and laggy to be of any use especially if it is a standalone. Some good DVR brands that I recommend are Bosch, Pelco, Honeywell and Ascendent. These brands are what security professionals use.

I recommend Ascendent as they are less expensive because they cameras for companies like Bosch and Pelco and offer better performance but any of these 3 brands will work well.

These brand manufacturers also have a complete line of CCTV cameras and DVR for any application from residential to military and stand behind there warranties. You want to get a good bran name otherwise you will likely buy a product that work and cant be returned.

Security Camera System Needed - Any Suggestions?

Char Char

I need a system that is for the outdoors (weather-proof), it needs to have at least 6 cameras. The cameras are going to be spread across 4.5 acres, so I need them to be either wireless or be able to buy a large qty. of cable to have the cables run underground to the main control panel. I would like for the cameras/control panel to be connected to the internet or our computer network for monitoring over the internet. I have read a little bit about the DVR/control panel the cameras hook-up to and as far as the storage it has I don't really care, as I will just erase the previous video, so I would say just enough for a day or two of recording.

I am new to cameras so this is why I am asking on here. If you could please provide a name of a company, a link to a website or a product/kit name that meets these requirements, that would be great. Thanks.

Answer
Hello

Not all CCTV equipment is created equal, in fact there are many options that offer varying performance take cars for example. In the world of CCTV you can find the equivalent of a $2,000 golf cart and a $350,000 Ferrari and everything in between. Both have 4 wheels but that's where the similarities end, itâs under the hood that counts.

One of the best posts ive seen on yahoo many are brutally incarcerate or blatant advertising attempts by online retailers: Caoedhen is dead right and one of the few people who understand CCTV and has worked with it for a while so many people buy a system online and think they know what there talking about.

ApexCCTV does not sell high end products and there IR cameras are not high quality they are from china and Taiwan and most have 48DB signal to noise ratio which is 100x more noise then a good cameras will have resulting in lower image quality and a larger file size on DVR`s (golf cart)

ApexCCTV standalone s are decent quality as they are made by avtech who makes great DVR`s for the residential and low budget market but not a high end solution by any means.

Apex CCTV PC based DVR`s are powered by either Avermedia or Geovision which are not high quality and there marketing greatly exceeds there products features an ability,

back to your question:

95% of all wireless cameras are compete junk and any wireless camera under $400 run on 1.2 or 2.4GHZ and don't offer encryption. This is bad for 2 reasons one the signal can easy be jammed, with a laptop you can actually hacked video feeds so a criminal can use it to spy and know a good time to target your business or home.

Now one option for wireless is using commercial IP radios which are basically wireless routers on steroids and can offer distances up to 40km of wireless with military encryption, this is not a cheap solution but neither is digging a trench. using these radios not only give you a security infrastructure but also communications infrastructures as well for internet and other purposes (LAN network)

Good radio company
http://www.tranzeo.com/

And yes you can do over 30 km no problem with these radios so 4.5 acres is easy to do. these radios are used by US military and I have done projects with them as well.

now in order to use this wireless network to distribute video you need to buy IP cameras which are similar to IP cameras only they transmit video over networks instead of a cable.

The company I recommend for CCTV products is Ascendent Technology Group they have a large product line and offer better products then Pelco Honeywell and Bosch and are about %20 cheaper and in my opinion have the best IR outdoor camera line up.

For an IP I recommend uses Ascendent`s IP servers that have a hard rive built in which does 3 things. Allows you use any analog camera and convert it into an IP addressable server. Allows you to distribute video over the network and has an HDD in it so that if the network goes don't or your NRV (network video recorder) goes down or gets stolen you have data redundancy. some companies use SD cards but to be honest that is quite useless low frame rate and only hours of recording.

http://dealer.ascendentgroup.com//ipnetworkvideo/x4-ip-pro-320-4.html

Also again Caoedhen is dead right you want more then 2 days of recording I can`t tell you how many times people have wanted to look at video up to 2 months and have done projects where they keep video for 3 years. I would suggest no less then a week of recording.

As far as cameras there are many types but for outdoor cameras you typically want IR cameras.

Ascendent has IR cameras that go from 50ft to 10km yes 10km longest in the world.

http://dealer.ascendentgroup.com//dvr-ir-cameras/23_1.html

If you talk to Ascendent and give them a diagram or layout they will design a system for you for free as long as you use there product. They will even test the tranzeo radios and make sure they work so they can send you a completely configured system.

I have used them on many installs and the odd time I received a defective unit they took care of me ASAP and they have great technical support.
