What is the best affordable outdoor security camera?

Jen

Someone seems to think it is funny to throw beer bottles and garbage on our lawn. We are trying to catch them in the act. We think we know who it is, but we want to get a security camera to try to protect our property. Does anyone know who makes the best, affordable security cameras?

Answer
Get a CCTV camera with infrared night vision and CCD sensor - do not get a camera with a CMOS sensor, they are no good in the dark.

Get a camera with a high resolution (480) and and digital DVR than can record that resolution

Which Security Surveillance system has motion activated video cameras which stores data & Internet viewing?

sri k

It should store the data in a hard disk and also need to provide viewing online as well.

Answer
Hello

I recommend Ascendent anything you buy from them will be good and responsibly priced.
http://www.ascendentgroup.com/

Ascendent has a live demo of a PTZ camera
Open IE not Firefox (unless you run IE from Firefox)

1) http://24.66.0.207/ (in address bar)
2) download active X controls
3) Hit connect (right hand corner)
4) DVR type (PC DVR)
5) Site-100
6) Username: Demo (case sensitive)
7) Password demo (lower case)
8) Hit extend config
9) Site-IP 24.66.0.207
10) Data port 7000
11) Stream Port: 8000

Not all DVRs are created equal, in fact there are many options that offer varying performance much like the automobile industry. In the world of DVRs you can find the equivalent of a $10,000 Kia and a $350,000 Ferrari and everything in between. Both have 4 wheels and windshield but that where the similarities end, itâs under the hood that counts. Just like any other consumer electronic in the end you get what you pay for.

I suggest you buy a PC based DVR has they have more processing power and normally have a much smaller file size and offer more features then Standalone DVR's. I know many people buy a cheap standalone DVR, only to upgrade to a PC based in 6 months especially when they are using it to manage a store remotely. Also PC based allows you to record up to 64 cameras where a standalone will have a limit of 16.

Many people have the misconception that a PC-Based DVR is simply an off-the-shelf PC with video capture (encoder) cards, display (decoder) cards and some generic OEM software. A true DVR requires years of research and development to facilitate the seamless integration of both the hardware and software. DVRs are highly complex systems that must run 24/7, processing millions of images per day. This makes consumer-level hardware inadequate for DVRs which is why Ascendent uses custom-built PCs with performance-level hardware.

My personal favorite DVR is Ascendent X4 series: Ascendentâs Tri-Fusion Hybrid Platform allows for the creation of a true hybrid surveillance system by utilizing the advantages of Analog, Megapixel, and IP technologies for unparalleled customization and expandability. I am working on government projects and use Ascendent cameras and DVR because the offer superior performance and cost less then comparable brands like bosh, Honeywell and pelco.

Many DVr offer remote viewing bu most are so slow it is useless I would suggest making sure you get a demo fisrt so you know it will do what you want.

You also want a system with water marking so images can hold up in coasrt (cheap DVR's wont work well for this)

If you are ona budget but still want decent live viewing over the internet I would suggest the AVP-4120USB

Best security camera?

Margi

What is the best security camera for the home security?

A) IP camera
B) Dome Camera

http://www.aditgroup.com/CCTV-Camera.html

Answer
It depends on the requirements. But your question is confusing. IP (Internet Protocol) is merely the network connection the camera has. Usually, an IP camera - for home use - is not "outdoor rated". Some are... Usually, the IP camera has nowhere to store the video, so a video server or dedicated computer is required if the video needs to be stored.

A "dome camera" is a camera in a dome. It can be IP or analog. If it is an IP camera, then the above paragraph applies. If it is an analog camera, it will need some sort of connectivity to a DVR for video storage and the DVR can be connected to the computer network.

We don't know:
what computer network might be available;
whether you need outdoor rated cameras;
how long - if at all - the video storage needs to be;
whether computer or smartphone access is needed... and lots more.

Without this information, selecting *best* is impossible.

Cheap Security Camera?

What is the cheapest security/surveillance camera on the market? - Any camera that can record footage, that can later be hooked up to a computer, so that the footage can be extracted.

Answer
A webcam is about the cheapest thing going, works as well as anything else. It really depends on what you want the camera to cover, and how close the computer is to that spot.

Security cameras, as in the ones you see at the stores, don't record anything. They are connected to a central recording device, via cable or WiFi. If you need a remote camera that can't be connected to a central recorder, you would really need to get a video camera. Not really a good option, but better than nothing. Power would be the main problem with a video camera.

Security Camera question!?

Jack Smith

I need a camera of some sort to catch what my dad does to me when we disagree on something.. he gets so angry and sometimes hits me for being wrong etc.... I was thinking of putting some sort of camera on the ceiling or if it was small enough close somewhere anyway if there is such a camera where could I buy it?and write down personal expirecences thanks!

Answer
Please don't give advice when you have clearly never worked with CCTV equipment. Amazon sells complete junk and the video taken by non CCTV cameras often wont hold up in coart because they need water marking in the images.

What you want is a DVR a DVR converts analog cameras and as well as storing images on site allows you to distribute video over LAN and WAN networks. (internet and network) this way you have both on site storage and recording at your house.

Just about any Analog DVR will do what you are looking for and not only display them but record them as well they will also allow you to view them over the internet from a Iphone or laptop.

Many people have a misconception that IP has Superior scalability then Analog but with the advancements with DVR's this simply isn't true, you cn do up to 16,000 cameras each camera could even be from a different DVR and a different site.

And when you are using the internet to connect multiple sites together analog transmits over the internet faster with less latency using less bandwidth allowing you not only to view and monitor a situation real time but also effective control PTZ cameras.

What is the Advantage of IP?
Many of the so called advantages of IP simply don't hold water in the real world, IP is mainly Hype and marketing and outside of a few niche applications such as 1 or 2 camera installs, where MP cameras are needed or large scale wireless projects which represent about 2% of the total CCTV market, IP has very few advantages compared to analog based on performance, cost and reliability. (yet all companies touting IP will often use MP cameras to demonstrate the advantages of IP)

IP video is more about marketing then it is about performance as larger companies like Bosch pelco Honeywell axis can change for both hardware and software and once you use there cameras you have to keep using there cameras unlike analog.

Also IP sounds great, plug and play, Better image quality, use existing infrastructure, who wouldnât want that unfortunately this is often not the case.

IP cameras are based on CMOS
Analog cameras are based on CCD (usually)

A CMOS sensor is constructed using a array of pixels, but unlike CCDâs CMOS do not have a capacitor to store the charge for each pixel. The rows of pixels are activated sequentially rather then individually

This means CMOS has some significant disadvantages compared to CCD, this means CMOS
have inferior ability to cope with ambient lighting such as back light, bright, deep shadows contrasts, low light and IR this is also known as the real word.

In short unless you have perfect lighting a good CCD camera will outperform an equivalent CMOS camera.

File Size:
The smaller the files size the more images that are able to be sent and the faster they can be processed improving both FPS and speed. File size is the heart of any DVR and goes far beyond just its streaming capabilities as it also determines the recoding storage time, how much you can back up at once, how fast it renders and searches video.

IP cameras have up to a 5X larger file size then analog cameras. (at same resolution) I have seen MP cameras that on 2MP resolution are over 300X (%3000) larger then our X3 DVR on a CIF image. This is an extreme case but generally speaking IP cameras have a much larger file size.

Most routers and switches are not designed to handle IP cameras they have enough bandwidth but they are not able to process the amounts of commands. (9 IP cameras 30FP is 230 instructions per second) standard routers have enough bandwidth (up to 1GB) but cant handle the amount of tasks (instructions) so frames get dropped latency is introduced and the effectiveness of other devices such as POS, printers and dats storage can be affected and compromised.

Donât get me wrong there are some brutal analog cameras and DVR out there but If you see a good D1 resolution image such as Ascendents Hardware compressed you will not be so quick to join the IP bandwagon.

IP is a young and emerging technology and I have no doubt that in the future it will outperform analog cameras but its not a mature technology yet. Once we start to get standard IP platforms, get rid of license feesâ and existing networks have larger bandwidths then IP video will be a good solution, but until then analog is the way to go.

Make sure you get good cameras as well, Ascendent has the best IR outdoor cameras on the market and are about %50 less then Bosch while offering triple the distance.

Does a security camera that uploads to a web server or ftp without a computer exist?

Striker

I want to have an always-on motion activated security camera that supports wifi or even wired ethernet that can upload to a web server or ftp. I don't want to leave my computer on all the time.

Answer
Yes. They are called IP or Network cameras.

http://video-insight.com/Purchase/Security-Cameras/IP-Cameras.aspx

Here are a few. I actually work for this company. Funny I ran across your post while answering miscellaneous questions. If you ordered from us, your camera would likely pass through my hands.

Another guy mentioned Netbotz. They are proprietary. If you want temperature readings from them, you need to buy their whole system. If you're going to do that, they are not the best. Pelco dominates the high end of this market, but they cost a fortune. If you want what you asked for which is just a camera by itself with a lot of uploading options and motion detection, I suggest a network camera by Toshiba, Canon, Axis, or Vivotek. If you want insane resolution as well, look at IQ Eye (but costly).

What Do I need to do/buy to set up an ethernet security camera system viewable at my pc?

srgntcttn

Answer
All you really need to do is buy the camera, plug it into the ethernet, and install the software that came with it. That's about all there is too it.

Wireless cameras are pretty simple too, but you need to connect them to your computer first before using them, to configure wireless settings.

Need details about Web Cams v/s Security cameras?

sam

I have a very little shop and for the purpose of recording the activities of shop lifting by customers, I want to install security camera. My question is can a simple web cam attached to my computer will do the work for me or I will have to install a CCTV camera. What is difference between the two and how much hard disk space is used in 24 hours recording. Any other thing which you think that I should keep in mind.

Answer
Security cameras generally have lenses that have a wider field of view than the typical web cam, making them more suitable for surveillance purposes. Security cameras also usually have higher resolution which translates into better picture quality.

But the biggest difference is the way that the cameras can handle lighting conditions. A good security camera will be equipped with an auto-iris lens, which allows it to automatically adjust to changing light conditions. A good security camera will also have back lighting compensation which prevents the camera from being blinded when there is a source of bright light in the scene.

Generally, a security camera would be a better choice for surveillance in your store if you are serious about recording activities of shoplifters.

Recording time is effected by many things, including camera resolution, picture size, frame rate, and type of recording format used (MPEG-4, H.264, etc). Figure out what types of cameras and video recording software you will be using, and then consult the camera/software documentation to see what your disk storage requirements will be.

Also, there are many online sellers of security cameras and video recorders, and many of these have calculators that you can use to figure out how much disk space you will need.

Security cameras and kissing?

Kaitlyn

My school has security cameras and me and my bf wanna kiss. Where do we do it without being caught? If my mom found out I would be dead!

Answer
All security cameras have a limited viewing area, a limited range. It should not be that hard to find areas they can not see. Doorways, empty rooms, the janitor's closet, sometimes the camera can't see right under itself, if there are too many people between you and the camera.
Get a look at the monitors, the tv screens that show what the camera can see. That will give you an idea what the cameras can actually see, that will help you understand what you can do. There are aways blind spots, areas not covered.

Answer
Hello, Many users have problems with web cams. Press the designated button to turn on your camera. If you are using an external camera, use a compatible USB cable to connect the camera to the USB port of your computer.

Visit a website that allows you to test your webcam online. An example of a site you can use include http://www.ehow.com/how_8443971_test-webcam-online.html
Next try this.
Click the "Allow" button from the flash player settings window. You should now see live video footage from your web camera. If you don't see live video, your web camera is not working properly.
To reinstall the drivers try this. Right click on My Computer-> Properties -> Device manager -> Imaging Devices -? Webcam. Right click on the webcam and uninstall it. This will cause the computer to reinstall the drivers and software. Restart the computer and hopefully your problem will be fixed.

what are some good but cheap wireless security cameras/audio i can hook up to my laptop?

Jake

possibly ones i can hide so burglars wont see them and shoot them out like the other ones

Answer
There are tons of good cameras, but then you went and added CHEAP into the mix. LOL
There are some really small ones like the "finger cam" http://www.pimall.com/nais/fingercam.html you can easily hide the thing. Or some of the "spy" cams like these http://www.dynaspy.com/mini-wireless-spy-camera-24ghz-color-spycam-p-28.html?osCsid=mln2hkand4hnchgifm4in9kr96

I found some at a "Hamfest" which were about the size of a penney and needed even a smaller opening to allow them to see out. If you really need audio, that is a different issue entirely. The "inteli spy" comes close to what you asked http://www.intelspy.com/24ghzmiwiauc.html small, cheap, with microphones. You will have to convert the output to use it with your laptop but that isn't hard to do.

Answer
Most new computers that have built in camera come with software from the manufacturer that can do exactly what you are asking with video or still photos. I have an acer and lenovo that both can record video or pictures and email them to an address. They also have options for sensitivity of the motion sensor and a few other features. You may want check that first, but if not there are some other software options. This is the only free option that I have had success with in the past:

How does a Security Camera work?

Taufan

Answer
Security cameras are useful in improving the safety of residential and business buildings. Home security camera systems have gained phenomenal popularity over the years. With spectacularly enhanced digital imagery and moderate working costs, the use of security cameras has become quite widespread. The use of security camera systems is no longer limited to banks or department stores but is increasingly being used for residential security also.

Home security camera systems let you keep track of children at play and simultaneously can keep an eye on the front door. They vary in their appropriateness and operation, and it is imperative that the proper selection is made based on individual requirements to ensure their effectiveness.

While choosing a home security camera system you must decide on the area to be observed, and the camera should be located at a suitable distance in order to focus on the preferred area. In case there is a need to mount the camera on a wall or structure, a mounting bracket can be placed at the predetermined spot, and the position of mounting screws can be indicated.

While opting for a wired system, the camera and monitor should be connected in accordance with instructions. Care should be taken to not expose the wiring, so the home security system cannot be sabotaged. And always remember to keep these gadgets out of reach of children.

Another crucial issue that should also be given adequate importance is the number of cameras that one would like to employ in the home security camera system. Some systems have room for only one or two, whereas other systems offer more. There are also camera systems which incorporate microphones, allowing you to hear and see the required object at the same time.

Home Security Systems provides detailed information on Home Security Systems, Wireless Home Security Systems, Home Security Alarm Systems, Home Security Camera Systems and more. Home Security Systems is affiliated with Wireless Home Security Systems.

Is this a good security camera for a business?

Howdyou_Do

I listened to the Real Deal podcast the other day, and they recommended a Panasonic BL-C131A camera for home video surveillance. But it's cheap and has great reviews! Is there any reason why it wouldn't be suitable for use in a business?

It's for my Uncle's business, and he had looked into getting a security agency come in. They estimated $8,000 to set up the system! So, again, what could they do that is SOOOO much better than that Panasonic wireless camera?

Here is the camera on Amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-BL-C131A-Network-Camera-Wireless/dp/B000NVR9SM

Thanks for your help :)

Answer
Any camera is a good camera. Preferably one that records video. You should keep 2 recorders. Usually if a criminal finds the one dummy (that works) they will take the tape and you are stuck with a camera and no video. If you have another hidden 9 x's out of 10 they won't think to look for the second. Most businesses usually only have 1.

Also if you change the tape every night that can help you to identify someone who was in that place of business at a time when something may have happened and you didn't know until later. I would store them in a place outside that place of business in case of fire. If by chance there was a break in, you could look at the other video's from the previous days to see who may have been checking the place out. Especially if there were no services provided to that person.

Well good luck. I hope this is the camera for you. And I hope I have been helpful.

how I can set my security cameras on the internet?

Greg Roman

how I can set my security cameras on the internet. I have wire350 router and SHR104 samsung cameras, What I need to do?

Answer
Unless you have a dvr multiple cameras are pretty well useless. Either you need a recording program on a machine running 24/7 or a proper dvr. Either of these would have a remote viewing program which requires forwarding a port through your router to the machine. For a computer connected system you would also need to open the same port on the firewall. If they are IP cameras you would need to give each a static IP address outside the router DHCP pool of addresses but within the same subnet. You would also need to assign a different port to each camera. Then you have to set up forwarding of each port on the router to point to the appropriate address internally.

Installing a security camera?

Ava D

We've been hearing a lot of noises outside our house. And, my friend advised me to try installing a security camera. What are the benefits of installing home security cameras in my home?

Answer
I've been a product manager for Security Cameras for about 10 years. I believe the benefits are:

1) Pre and Post event recording (seeing what happened not only during a crime, but what happened just before and after)
2) if you have a camera at your front door, you have a better way to see who is at the door without approaching the door. If you hook the camera to your TV set, you can even see who is at the door without leaving your couch
3) Remote Viewing -- if you have your camera hooked to a DVR or if it's an IP camera, you have the ability to remote look in from anywhere that has an internet connection. I even have the ability to get live snapshots from my cameras at home via my cell phone.
4) Deterrant -- Cameras that are visible to would-be burglars, intruders, hooligans, etc, are great deterrants to those types of activities.

Try not to go cheap. The cheaper the camera, the worse the image. Resist that urge. Expect to pay between $700-$1500 for a really good, Day/Night, high resolution camera, installed, plus the price to record it. If you go cheap on this, like with a Swann or Qsee camera from Fry's, yes you'll be able to see if SOMEBODY is at your door, but forget trying to ID them later.

A QUESTION ABOUT SECURITY CAMERAS!?

Abc D

Why are thier quality so bad?
I mean if its like at least 5 megapixel you can at least see the robbers face clearly and all hes wearing.
but security cameras are fuzzy, sometimes black and white, and blurry?
I mean whouldnt it be much easier to get a better quality camera?

Answer
Cheapo crap camera plugged into VCR: $100
High Quality CCTV system: $3,000

Both have the same deterrent value, and neither has the ability to see through a ski mask. Who is going to spend $5,000 on security equipment that can be defeated by a $15 purchase?

$100 is a sound investment, but the $5,000 camera is not 50 times more likely to prevent a robbery. And neither the $100 camera nor the $5000 is likely to actually get back the $300 stolen from the cash register.

Eh, my solution if I am setting this up: Get a crappy used computer, a high-quality webcam ($50), a long USB chord ($50) so the computer can be kept hidden in a file cabinet or something. Set it to record 24/7, and delete older recordings automatically when space needs to be freed. Just as cheap, deters just as much, and has quality similar to the $3000 system.

Which home security is better?

Cassey

ADT or Power Home Technologies? Ive heard horrible reviews on ADT but a lot of people have them so im not sure if their actually good or not. Ive never known of anyone to have Power Home Technologies as a home security so i need help on which is better or if there's a better home security company in alabama.

Answer
I'm not familiar with PHT so I'm not sure about their offering. Most security companies use very similar technology and you generally get what you pay for. Part of the decision should be based on what your expectations are. In today's world, with all the police budget cutbacks, the police may not dispatch anyone for a burglary call. If that's the case in your area, you may be further ahead to get an alarm system with a loud siren that you can control. Sounds simple, but these are actually pretty effective. A good watchdog is probably more effective than either company and will probably cost you less. For best value, I think a good intrusion alarm, a watchdog and a pistol is your best bet.

A lot depends on where you live, what type of neighborhood, how isolated is your house, and how much are you gone. If your concern is protecting your house when you're gone, then I'd recommend an intrusion alarm and maybe a simple surveillance camera system. If your concern is for when you are home, then a watchdog and a firearm is a better option.

Surveillance systems will cost about the same as an ADT system. Again, there probably isn't one all around best system as it depends on what you hope to accomplish. I have a surveillance system and a pair of German Shepherds at my home along with several firearms. I've never had a problem.

What is a good home security camera system?

Gary

I am looking for an home security camera sytem that I could link with my tv on it's own channel.

Any suggestions?
Trying to stay below $400, I could do any wiring myself. I live in South Florida so it gets to be around 90 degrees on average. Just a standard resolution in color. Night vision would be a big plus but not needed. If it could be directed to the video input on a receiver that could work also. Would want it to store recordings.

Answer
Analog, composite video? There are lots.

On its own channel? Some RF modulators can be expensive, especially if you want to select the channel. Easier if you just use one of the other video inputs that are not in use.

What is your budget?
What resolution are you looking for?
Will the video need to be recorded and stored? If yes, what surveillance DVR are you looking at?
Only one camera?
Is night vision required? If yes, how far does the camera need to see in darkness?
Does the camera need to be outdoor rated?
Does it snow where you live? If yes, you may need a housing with a heater unit.
Does it get REALLY hot where you live? If yes, you might need a housing with a cooling system.
Is the video signal to be wired or wireless?
Is there power available where you plan to install the camera?
Is the camera going to stay in one position or is pan/tilt/zoom control required?

You have not provided enough information for anyone to provide you a good recommendation.

Answer
Hello

Here is a DVR that will work perfectly for you.

http://www.ascendentgroup.com/x4s.htm

Most DVR's and cameras don't have the ability to view from your i-phone, and you cant just download generic software all DVR's and cameras uses different encryption , software, and compression so you cant use another companies software to view another manufactures DVR.

You want a DVR that has an app specifically designed to work with it like the one I am suggesting below.

What you want is a DVR a DVR converts analog cameras and as well as storing images on site allows you to distribute video over LAN and WAN networks. (internet and network) this way you have both on site storage and recording at your house.

A good Analog DVR will do what you are looking for and not only display them but record them as well they will also allow you to view them over the internet from a Iphone or laptop.

X4S Remote Accessibility
View all your cameras instantly and remotely, and configure the DVR through internet using eitherbusiness in real time from anywhere in the world. MAC or PC platforms (smart phones too). This allows you to manage your

Make sure you get good cameras as well, Ascendent has the best IR outdoor cameras on the market and are about %50 less then Bosch while offering triple the distance.

home security cameras...?

Hello, we just bought a house and did some yard work and added solar lights in the front yard. We had people steal them 4 different times. We went out and bought cameras and installed them and even put a sign out that says "smile you are on camera" and we bought cables and ran them through the lights. Well the problem is now again tonight someone came and tried to steal them but only snapped a couple off but our camera wasn't recording at the time because it is hooked up to a vcr and you have to manually hit record and the time it happened it wasn't recording. What is the cheapest way to be able to have the camera record 24/7 without having to deal with hitting record and deal with vcr tapes?? This is supposed to be a good area to live in but its turning out to be awful and I am so upset someone would keep doing this, not to mention all the money we are out

Nightime Security Camera?

CK MODELE

Since I can't stay up all night, there are times in the evening when we can smell very strong cigarette smoke in our home. Mostly near one bedroom window. The aroma is stronger than a cigarette; but, not as strong as a cigar. I am not a smoker and the other night we woke up to the smell of cigarette smoke. So, I don't know if there is a peeping tom in the area or if its someone smoking near our window. In any case, I want to try and catch some video behind what's going on. I am not a smoker, so it's a big deal which has started about a week ago. Can anyone suggest what type of camera to use, is this part of a home security system (such as ADT)? I have a pc and vcr for the playback, it just needs to be hidden in our area so that I can use the nightime lighting in the area to determine if its someone in our community or a person walking by at that time of night puffing away. I am daily rejecting the advances of a guy and wonder if this is him or just coincidence.
Thank You for your response!!

If the Red LEDs will display a red light on the glass, will there be a red light on wherever it is pointed? This only happends while we are asleep, so I want to be as educated as possible to know how to handle this situation as quickly as possible.

Answer
You can get a cheap night vision camera on eBay or Amazon. I just bought one of these and hooked it up to a VCR to test it out and it worked pretty good at a distance of up to 15 feet. You will have a problem, though, if you try to put it inside looking out a window because the IR LEDs will reflect off of the glass.

Answer
May be you bought the wrong one. For the image quality, it depends on several elements, like camera, how far u watch etc.

I think you will find these words when your search for products

420TVL, 480TVL, 540TVL, 600TVL, 700TVL, 480P, 720P, 1080P .

Normally,600TVL is enough to see things clear In the range of five meters.Anyway, before u decide to buy one, check information clearly.

Portable HD network camera?

Vroom

Boss just asked me to find "a webcam that can do 1080p preferably if not 720p is fine. Stereo mic input. Low light capability. And built in encoder on camera" for live streaming presentations (lecture/seminar).

My first thought was the AXIS security cameras, but he says a camera meant for permanent installation would be a serious adverse consideration in making the purchase. Does anyone know of something that performs like an AXIS network camera, but is meant to be set up for on-demand usage? Maybe some kind of tool specifically for remote video presentation?

Thanks in advance!

Lorex Corp SG6184S Weatherproof Mini Color Security Camera with Night Vision, where can i download manual, wanting to set it up to my vcr and clueless how this is done,i have camera's yellow white cables in tv[video/audio but unsure how to connect or what to do so i can record from vcr, please specifies

Answer
Simple, yellow is composite video, white is audio. Those connect to the A/V in on your VCR. You connect your VCR to your TV or a monitor, set it so you see the VCR menu, and the VCR to line in so you see the camera output. Of course, you also connect the power adapter to the camera power inlet.
Once you see the camera on the TV, you can record it.

Need help w/ outdoor security camera system.?

I need to buy an outdoor security camera system. Night vision and distance are a must. Need at least 4 cameras. Any recommendations? This will be my first security cam purchase so any info will be greatly appreciated! oh yeah, I'd prefer a reasonably priced system... Like maybe below $600 and still a good system. Thanks for the help 8-)

Answer
Hello

Peter that is the worst advise I have heard in a long time Costco, Walmart and online companies like Lorex (coscto sells lorex) sell very low quality cameras and often don't offer watermark so there images cant even hold up in court.

Giving advice when you don't know what your talking about is like giving direction to a place you don't now where it is, all you doing is wasting there time and in this case there money too.

The cameras from costco and walmart are used as nanny cameras that's all there good for.
Most IR cameras give you about 1/3 of the vision as advertised they call it "projected" distance now this had no coloration with what the camera will actually see at night.

A Varifocal (can change what the camera can see) lens with a good aperture 2 good examples are 5-50mm or 2.9~10mm. A fixed lens almost never works when installing a camera outdoors. Again to ensure you are getting a good lens and optics stick to name brands and avoid online retailers, eBay, Swann Lorex, Costco and Q see and other cheap no name products.

Also if you are buying good cameras get a decent DVR.

A good outdoor Camera will have

High resolution (520TVL or higher)
Good signal to noise ratio (S/N 49DB or 50DB)
A true Sony CCD (not Chinese knockoff)
Rugged enclosure to handle vandals and environments
At least IP 66 and a suitable temperature rating for you region
IR LED's to see in pitch dark: active IR rating not projected IR as projected IR has no coloration with how far the camera can see.
2 or 3 different sized LED;s 1 size LED one type of illumination means you either wont get distance or wide angle and you want both.

I would go with the VIS-56IR-2910
http://dealer.ascendentgroup.com//dvr-irâ¦

this camera will give you 110 feet of clear vision in complete darkness and great images by day its the on I recommend for budget customer who need outdoor IR camera.

Cameras that have high resolution, and great signal to noise ratio can reducing file size on DVR's up to 50% and offer better images.

Low budget Economical
ASC-520B21IR-36
Economical Infrared Bullet Camera
520TVL
see 25 feet outdoors
Fixed 3.6mm lens
35~-25C IP 66
MSRP $110.00

http://dealer.ascendentgroup.com//ascentâ¦

Cheap option would never suggest a camera lower then this one
(still much higher quality then Costco, Lorex, Swann, Qsee, and other no name products imported from china)

ASC-380B24IR-36
Infrared Bullet Camera
380TVL
see 25 feet outdoors
Fixed 3.6mm lens
35~-25C IP 66
MSRP $75.00

Not all CCTV equipment is created equal, in fact there are many options that offer varying performance much like the automobile industry. In the world of CCTV you can find the equivalent of a $2,000 golf cart and a $350,000 Ferrari and everything in between. Both have 4 wheels but that's where the similarities end, itâs under the hood that counts.

Just like any other consumer electronic in the end you get what you pay for. Most retailers and sellers make about a 40-80% profit margin, this is after costs like shipping and overhead. That means when you buy a product that costs $100.00 the manufacturer usually has only spent $30 to build it which simply means itâs not a good product and will probably have a working life of about 2 months. There is a reason these products are 1/10 of the price of good and reliable DVR brand names. The type of seller these products attract are online sellers (ebay) and will make profits margins as low as 2% which means they canât afford to offer good service or allow for RMAs (returns). Cheap products are like disposable razors they are NOT designed to last for a long time and you will end up replacing them every 2 months.

Ascendent makes cameras fir military and critical infrastructure so you know there good quality and there price is about 20% below Bosch and Pelco and offer higher specs and performance.
Not the cheapest but they are the best bang for the buck.

Does a laser effect Dome security camera?

Answer
Sure, if you can get the laser lined up with the camera lens properly.

The dome is just a cover over a standard camera, and you sometimes can and sometime cannot actually see the camera in the dome. If you can't, you are just wasting time with the laser. If you can, a laser in the lens will blind the camera.

It won't blind the part where you are trying to get the laser lined up properly, so you'll still be on tape and probably get a visit from the cops, but the laser will blind the camera.

How can I use my webcam as a security camera?

bablyon_20

Hi;
I'd like to be able to use my webcam to take a picture when it detects motion within it's field of vision, and send it to an email address - something similar to Mugshot, (except that doesnt support authenticated SMTP by the looks of it, unless by request). Does anyone out there know of any similar product?

Answer
IP surveillance technology has reached one of those "perfect storm" moments. Today's digital cameras are inexpensive and easy to install. Wired and wireless networks alike are ubiquitous. And the camera-monitoring software is robust, easy-to-use and often free. Demand for security cams is high among both businesses and home users, and system builders stand to capitalize on this surging wave by offering installation services and support. There's even potential for computer and server upgrades, as some companies will be looking to build dedicated systems that have guaranteed bandwidth and quality of service (QoS) over the video network.
Cameras are popping up all over the place. You can find them at retail businesses, factory floors, homes, apartments, landmarks, schools, financial institutions and transportation centers, to name but a few. Applications range from basic security and safety to quality control monitoring.

Although you can use these cameras over the Web, they're not really Webcams, which are those small, low-tech cameras designed for online socializing. Rather, IP-based cameras connect directly to IP networks, record at higher frame rates, and generally have better resolution then Webcams. They can pan, tilt and zoom, and many have one-way or two-way audio capabilities. They also come with monitoring and management software that lets you trigger alarms and e-mail alerts when certain events occur. For example, you can designate motion detection areas within a frame that generate alerts when motion occurs. Or you can set the system to begin recording when certain events occur or timers are set. Examples of motion events might include a person walking into the frame or a car driving across a designated area.

Since these systems are IP-based, you can monitor, store, and archive video, audio and associated application data over the Internet or across private data networks. The video can be carried anywhere the IP network extends, as opposed to closed-circuit television (CCTV) systems that require proprietary equipment and dedicated coaxial cabling. Anyone with the proper security clearance and a standard browser can monitor video, and control and configure the cameras on the network.

You need to have a fairly robust wired or wireless network set up for a successful IP surveillance roll-out. This Recipe assumes that you have a typical 10/100 wired or 802.11g wireless network already set up. We will, however, look at some Power over Ethernet (PoE) networking equipment and discuss the advantages of that type of system as well. PoE allows you to send power over ethernet lines so you don't have to place the cameras near power sources.

Finally, a note on what all this will cost you. Simply put, pricing will depend on several factors you'll need to carefully consider: Labor rates, the camera(s) selected, the structure of the building(s), the location of power outlets, the location of network infrastructure, etc.

Big Benefits

A quick rundown of the main benefits of IP surveillance follows. Use these points when pitching solutions to your customers, and they will quickly recognize the advantages.

â¢Utilizes existing IP infrastructure.
â¢Highly scalable.
â¢Flexible camera placement: PoE eliminates need for local power source; Wi-Fi eliminates need for hard-wired ethernet cable. Wi-Fi stands for Wireless Fidelity, and Wi-Fi is pretty much a noun these days, and has even become synonymous with the more generic term "wireless."
â¢Remote viewing from anywhere/anytime via a standard Web browser.
â¢Standards-based, allowing multi-vendor solutions and integration.
â¢Better image quality than closed circuit TV (CCTV) analog systems.
â¢Open storage and server systems scale easily and cheaply, with no need for specialized recording equipment or training.
â¢Secure: Data can be encrypted across the network, so only the cameras and servers know what kind of packets to expect across the system. Without the proper authentication keys, outsiders can't break into the network to steal video data or feed false video into the system. Also, any interruption to the data stream can automatically trigger alarms and alerts.
Ingredients

Let's get into the two main areas of componentsâthe cameras and the networkâthat we'll need for building out an IP camera surveillance system.

Cameras: Most professionals are deploying products from D-Link of Fountain Valley, California. The company has been around for 20 years, and it offers quality cameras at reasonable prices. I recommend them.

I tested D-Link's DCS-6620G, DCS-5300G, DCS-3220G, DCS-2120 and DCS-950G cameras. I've listed them in order from fully featured to bare-bones. The DSC-6620G is the deluxe model, with all the ......MORE http://www.crn.com/white-box/192202279;jsessionid=QHVPJ5ULF1U3ZQE1GHOSKH4ATMY32JVN?pgno=2

how does a wirelass sequity camera work.?

gustim

and could it send the signal through a hedge?
thanx

Answer
A wireless security camera sends it's video signal via a TRANSMITTER, to a RECEIVER which is connected to whatever you use to record or monitor the camera's view. They are used in applications where it is DIFFICULT or IMPRACTICAL to run a video cable. (Remember that when using a wireless system, it may be possible for your neighbors to pick up your camera's signal too.)

Many "wireless" security cameras require connection to a power supply and only the video output is wirelss, and others may be COMPLETELY "wirelss," using a battery to supply power. The battery operated types are often used for short term or temporary applications.

Depending on particular needs you can have a camera with the transmitter BUILT-IN, or it could be a separate transmitter and receiver set called a VIDEO LINK. (Some systems will wirelessly send AUDIO as well as the VIDEO signal, and some more expensive types will even operate in total darkness using infrared illuminators.)(A WIDE RANGE of equipment is available)

Although transmitting through a hedge may WEAKEN the transmitted signal, most good quality wireless camera systems, are robust enough, to still produce a good signal. Frequently some EXPERIMENTATION with the placement of the camera and receiver will be required for best signal strength, provided you are not trying to transmit too great a distance. For transmission "through a hedge" you will get better results with the lower frequencies, as they will better penetrate the bushes.

I have provided some links for you to look at various kinds of wireless security camera equipment.

HELP! Installed Infrared LED Night Day Security Camera Problems...please help urgent!?

divinemadn

Details:

EzWatch Pro Night/Day Infrared LED Security Outdoor Camera

there tech service isnt there till morning and we need to catch some vandals.

Got the camera today from ups, installed it tonight, worked great. Its on for about an hour and craps out on me. Itll work and show picture/video when a light is on, but the infrared stopped working. When looking at the camera, the infrared leds are blinking/flickering instead of staying on, this is evident when looking at the video monitor as well. Camera is fine if theres a light source now.

How we have it hooked up, about 5 feet from monitor and source inside, hooked into its on monitor and power source. The camera is hidden inbetween 2 motion sensor flood lights outside.

We had the flood lights turned on for motion detection, but then turned them off when the camera stopped working thinking maybe the overheated it..we dont know..

any ideas here????? in the last week my house has been vandalised 3 times...

Answer
If the camera works when there is daylight or floodlights, then your halfway home. LED's don't tend to blink or flicker on their own, that is, like a filament bulb who's filament is almost broken but not quite, if the LED's flicker then they are OK their just not getting the power.

If the led light source is on a cable, unplug and plug the cable several times in the event it's not seated well. Otherwise, find a local ham radio club, you will find a host of technicians who can help "ring out" the wiring problem, which is, a broken connection more than likely. You can also buy infrared light sources all by themselves which would solve the problem.

Is there a way to hook up security cameras so u can log into them on the internet and view them from home?

Tabbitatt

My buddy wanted a camera system that he could hook up in his house to monitor it when he is out on business. He wanted to hook up 5 video cameras in the house and then be able to view them on his computer via internet while away. Is this possible? If so how do we do this?

Answer
Very easy to do with the technology available in today's CCTV industry.

Along with the cameras, you will also want a security digital video recorder (DVR) to record the video. If anything occurs while he is out of town, he can access the video remotely anywhere in the world using an internet connection.

If the cameras are only going to be installed inside of the house, then a simple color CCD camera will be fine. If any cameras are going to be installed outside of the house, he should go with a day/night camera that automatically switches from color to black & white in low-light conditions (black & white produces a much clearer picture in low-light). He will also need an enclosure for any of the outdoor cameras to protect from the elements.

I do not recommend buying any "no-name" products when it comes to security/surveillance. As a professional in the industry, I can tell you that there are literally hundreds of new manufacturers trying to break into the rapid-growing surveillance market. There products are cheap, unreliable, and it is very easy to hack into all of their products if they are being used with remote access.

Some of the larger, proven manufacturers of the items you are looking for:

Pelco
Panasonic
Sony
Sanyo
GE
Honeywell

Take a look at the following website: www.videosecurityspecialists.com

They are one of the largest distributors of security/surveillance products. Give them a call and let them know what you want to accomplish with your mini-surveillance system. They will furnish you a quote and any literature you may need. They ship anywhere in the US and there pricing is some of the best in the country.

My recomendations:

1. Go with Sanyo cameras. VCC-6584 for the cameras inside your home and VCC-4594 for cameras outside of your home. These two cameras are the highest resolution in the industry and are the same cameras that almost every casino in Las Vegas uses. Pricing is approximately $180 for the VCC-6584 and slightly higher for the VCC-4594.

2. Use a GE digital recorder. One of the sales associate at VSSI can give you the pricing. Don't let them talk you into buying an expensive DVR with features you don't need. Ask for the least expensive 4-input DVR with the smalles hard drive space.

3. You will need at least DSL, preferably high-speed cable at your friends home which will be directly connected into the DVR. He will not be able to access the video remotely on a regular dial-up internet connection.

Good Luck!

Security Camera Capabilities at Night?

Nubian Kin

Just have a general question. How good are most security cameras at night. What is the typical range the camera is able to produce a good image in a night setting, with no light or very low light. I have been looking on the internet and in magazines to find there capabilities. I know there are all infrared and night vision camera, but im talking about a fixed positioned camera that is not monitored by anyone, so there is no zoom capabilities. Do generally they pick up good night time footage or do they need good lighting.

Answer
It just depends on the quality of the setup. Some places will use a cheap IP cam with no infrared lighting that's barely good enough for America's Funniest Home Videos. Some places uses camera with a bunch of infrared LEDs that can see just fine. FLIR cameras are becoming more common, which see body heat.

Help with security cameras?!?

Where do i buy night vision security cameras, and how do i hook them up live to my computer with a motion detector alarm?

Answer
Cameras; not sure look maybe at newegg.com, or buy.com
for software:
Secure Cam
is a motion detecting web cam surveillance software that can automatically capture a series of images whenever motion is detected in the monitored area. You can adjust the detection sensitivity, automatically archive captured still images and playback the images in sequence with the supplied viewer application. Secure Cam can monitor and display up to 99 cameras and automatically organizes captures based on the device. Other features include support for multiplexing, time stamps, text overlay and more. The program works with webcams, as well as DVR cards.
Freeware.

Try it on a regular webcam, or streaming video cam first to see if it's along the lines of what you want...it's free so not overly fancy or pretty interface...

Is the 2011 Ford Edge a facelift or the 2nd Generation?

gorilon

Im just asking because im planning to get the car by the end of the year, and i dont want the car to change soon.
btw the ecoboost 2.0 is coming out this summer or when?

thank

Answer
The Edge is undergoing quite a few major product changes for 2011 so i would consider it a 2nd generation.
Production dates are sketchy, but the latest information says that Ford will start producing them in July. I believe, based on my experience, Ford will release not them until they have "enough to go around" to the majority of the dealers.
The ecoboost engine will probably be "late availability" , but certainly out by the end of the year.

has justin bieber ever cussed in 2011?

Hannah

dont show me the bieber takes over video cuz i already know. but has he said anything this year??

Answer
Yes he has well kinda. He gave the paparazzi the bird (the middle finger) on his birthday March 1, 2011 because he was angry and they would not leave him alone. About 15 paparazzi were in the front of the car which kept following him you could see this video right here that shows it - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Un2_fTMbRkc&feature=related and which shows a picture of it - http://thejustinbiebershrine.com/2011/03/both-selena-gomez-justin-bieber-flip-middle-finger-to-paparazzi.html I don't think that Selena Gomez actually flipped off the paparazzi I just can't see her doing that I think that she was just holding her hair that's it. The paparazzi were like attacking Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez that day and they wanted to enjoy that day because he only has one 17th birthday and that day he has paparazzi all over him more than ever. I don't see why they would be around Justin Bieber more that day than any other day. Here is a video of the same day as his birthday where he yells at the paparazzi saying "CAN YOU STOP?!" it is paparazzi he has said so on Twitter heres the video - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qa_U_-twb5Y&feature=results_main&playnext=1&list=PL438959D4D834E119 as you can tell he is very annoyed but he does not curse at them. He apologized to all of the paparazzi for giving the middle finger and getting very angry at them. Selena Gomez isn't crying in the first video I showed you shes just trying to hide her face. At the BET Awards Justin Bieber calls the doorman a "douche bag" because they won't allow his security guards inside with Justin Bieber when Justin Bieber needs them for his safety here's the video of it - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CVfvtWsl5c8 and http://www.hollywoodlife.com/2011/06/30/justin-bieber-douchebag-bet-awards/ they allowed Justin Bieber's manager Scooter Braun inside but not Justin Bieber's body guards. I don't really understand why they wouldn't allow his body guards inside. Justin Bieber curses in a few songs which are 'Look At Me Now' with Chris Brown live in Sydney, Australia here's the video of it - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_U0UaRYXwBQ and Trust Issues - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LJvCWFB9YVU&feature=results_main&playnext=1&list=PL9A8EBF85BB24E5EB Justin Bieber also curses in Bieber or Die. In the movie 'Never Say Never' he is talking to his vocal coach 'Mama Jan' and he is about to go on stage and perform and he says "lets do this sh..." but he doesn't say it. Justin Bieber is like any other ordinary teenager so he does curse but he tries not to curse in front of his fans and in front of the cameras much. I know he fell off his bike once and was like "OH SH*T!!!" lol but that's in 2010 I will show you the video anyway here it is - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eha5cITRso0 I know for sure he does curse but not when he is around his fans, media, paparazzi etc because he gives them his respect! :)

anybody has experience with ip cameras?

Curious Du

So i'm looking to wire up my house for surveillance, I dont need anything too fancy like $200 cameras or so.. I'm looking for something that will just work, I would like it to have pan and tilt, and maybe zoom would be nice.

I have heard about the brand Foscam, do anybody have experience with this? reviews?

And, if not, can anybody recommend a trusted brand ? nothing too expensive, but something that is not cheap either, I will need it to work. I want motion detection and etc.

Answer
Not familiar with the hardware end of things, but if you want pan, zoom & tilt, you're probably going to pay a lot more.
A Wide Angle, with hi-resolution may be cheaper, and still cover a decent area. Check on the "Resolution" for field of view (may be in degrees) to get a comparative idea. Get 2 cams if necessary for full coverage. (some of the items below can handle multiple cams).
For software, here's some free items that work pretty good:
http://www.snapfiles.com/Freeware/security/fwvideosurveillance.html
Pick one you think fits the bill, and hook it up inside the house to try it.
Get another one if it's too hard or doesn't cut the mustard.
Good luck.

Need recording software for an RCA surveillance cam.?

Samson

I recently bought a night vision RCA surveillance camera as well as an RCA to USB converter to plug it into my computer. I now need to find a program paid or free, to view, and record with this camera using a separate condenser microphone as audio input. Recommendations?

Answer
These brand manufacturers also have a complete line of CCTV cameras and DVR for any application from residential to military and stand behind there warranties. You want to get a good bran name otherwise you will likely buy a product that work and cant be returned.

http://www.pleco.com/
http://www.bosch.com

95% of all IR cameras on the CCTV market are not IR cameras they are cameras with IR LED's on them,

A true IR cameras was desinged to be an IR camera which means the CCD, Lens, IR LEDS all work together for proper exposure.

The camera you are using is putting our to much light so it is overexposing the image becasue it is not properly designed I am willing to bet you bought your CCTV system from: Q-see, X10, Swan, Lorex, and other low grade DVRâs and cameras sold by Tiger Direct, Newegg, radio shack

If you bought a really cheap IR camera from a non brand name you most likely wasted your money,
Cheap IR cameras are standard cameras with $4 IR LED's on them, these cameras were not desinged to works with IR and they don't. A good IR camera are very complex and use special filters, optics, CCD, EPC and PCB that sync the camera with IR illumination for accurate illumination that eliminates over and under exposure and over exposure for perfect images 24/7.

There are only about 3 companies I trust for IR cameras.

Extreme CCTV, (Bosch) Peclo and Ascendent Technology Group.

The Best is Ascendent but they are harder to find as there a smaller company but they do offer better products and are actually cheaper. They supply IR cameras for military, and boarder security an offer thermal up to 40km and Active IR up to 8km. So there 500ft and bellow is amazing.

Don't buy IP cameras:

(yet all companies touting IP will often use MP cameras to demonstrate the advantages of IP)IP video is more about marketing then it is about performance as larger companies like Bosch pelco Honeywell axis can change for both hardware and software and once you use there cameras you have to keep using there cameras unlike analog.
Also IP sounds great, plug and play, Better image quality, use existing infrastructure, who wouldnât want that unfortunately this is often not the case.

IP is like wireless (in theory its perfect) if that was true there would be no wired cameras or analog cameras it would all be wireless IP.
This means CMOS has some significant disadvantages compared to CCD, this means CMOS
have inferior ability to cope with ambient lighting such as back light, bright, deep shadows contrasts, low light and IR this is also known as the real word.

In short unless you have perfect lighting a good CCD camera will outperform an equivalent CMOS camera.File Size:
The smaller the files size the more images that are able to be sent and the faster they can be processed improving both FPS and speed. File size is the heart of any DVR and goes far beyond just its streaming capabilities as it also determines the recoding storage time, how much you can back up at once, how fast it renders and searches video. (Ascendents X3 DVR achieves file sizes as low as .3KB on normal image quality on a CIF image no IP camera on the market will come close to this) The file size of a DVR impacts the performance of the DVR in just about every aspect from speed to longevity and is often the most import spec of any DVR.IP is a young and emerging technology and I have no doubt that in the future it will outperform analog cameras but its not a mature technology yet. Once we start to get standard IP platforms, get rid of license feesâ and existing networks have larger bandwidths then IP video will be a good solution, but until then analog is the way to go.

Hope this Helps
Will
