When is it legal to use a voice recording in the state of California? I have a difficult "roommate" situation. My boyfriend and I have a lease for a house from August 5, 2010 through February 28, 2013. My boyfriend allowed a "friend" to stay as a guest starting in September 2012. He still has not left, has definitely overstayed his welcome, is not on the lease and refuses to fill out paperwork for the property managers, and is threatening to sue us or the property managers for subletting. He is, clearly, making our life hell, even after all we have done for him when he had no where else to go. He still owes his last legitimate roommate money for rent, owes $600 to SDGE (they came and shut down our service and account when they found out he was staying with us), and he has literally no money. His car's registration tags expired January 2012 and he then registered it as a non-op in December 2012 AFTER it got impounded, yet he still drives it everywhere.
Anyway, I have a voice recording of the three of us arguing the other day and was wondering, if we were to have to go to court, would it be legal to use it since my voice and my boyfriend's voice are both on the tape?
Also, how can we go about getting him out of our house? What are the laws as far as how much notice we have to give him (or if any) and how to go about calling the sheriff to escort him out? If we do have to give him (x) days notice, do we have to certify mail it for proof he would have received it? I have heard anywhere from no notice to 3 days notice to 30 days notice so please someone help who really knows and please provide a reference.
He is not legally allowed to be here, we have informed the property managers of the situation so we would not get in trouble for subletting (even though there was no written agreement in the first place for it to be even called subletting), and we have purchased a security camera system in case he decides to try and vandalize the house or our cars once we kick him out. He is threatening us because he does not believe even 56 days notice is long enough and is trying to force us to renew our lease for his benefit. When you have the consent of all parties being recorded (or let's say all parties understand that they are being recorded) . . . or when in a public place where there is no reasonable expectation of it being considered a private conversation/discussion.

California is a "two-party" consent state in this respect. "One-party" consent states (like Georgia, where I live, do not need that - and I have used that right constructively).

There are pretty strict laws/penalties concerning this, I suggest you read the page linked to in "Source(s)" below.

I was taking a trip to Germany btw. Aug. and Sept. 2012 for about three weeks in Germany visiting relatives. During that stay I purchased two used musical instruments (Access Virus C and a Korg Micro XL). I intended to take them both home and I thought I put both of them in one of my suitcases. During the return trip the suitcase holding the instruments had to be put on a different plane taking an alternate route to the destination. It took an extra day for the other suitcase to arrive at my apartment. Upon checking the contents I noticed that the Virus B was missing but the Korg Micro XL was still there but two keys were lifted (which was easy to fix) and other items were strewn about (mostly clothes and non fragile souveniers. For some reason I was convinced that the Virus synth was still at my childhood home in Germany and I left it at that for some time. Well, last week I asked my mother to send me the Virus over but she didn't know what I was talking about. I described the item to her, even sent her a picture off the web for her to identify it. After a couple of days searching she came up with nothing. At that moment it hit me that the Virus (a 450 Euro purchase) might have actually been stolen out of that suitcase. Now after so much time going by should I still report a possible theft by airport staff or am I out of luck? Is there still any chance that security camera footage is still filed where the suitcase has been processed?

What is the best action for security at my business?

Sorry fairly long, but I do need advise. First, I want to tell you is the building sits in a residential neighborhood but it is commercial zone; it in the middle of the second block off a major highway and there is mix of residential and commercial properties in the two blocks. But most of the commercial properties face the highway. My building doesn't face the highway it is actually the last building before the zoning change. The other commercial buildings on my block are: next to mine is blight building (working on getting it torn down) and the other is the rear part of a motel. So there isn't a lot of foot traffic on the street during the day. My husband and I bought this building at an auction for little of nothing. Since the building is a double we figure we can lease one part and use the other part as a showroom for his construction business. Now, at the time of purchase the neighborhood was a quite neighborhood with little to no problems despite the motel. However, in the last year we have notice a lot more police presents. ( I want to mention we do live a block from the building) The motel have been attracting more criminals and more problems. The police have blocked streets off and have conducted searches for criminals (by foot and car) about 4 times since February of 2011 that we have notice. This activity usually take place at night, after business hours; however, that doesn't give me any comfort. My problem is the motel sits behind my building and as it stands now I will be in the showroom by myself 98% of the time. Keep in mind the street doesn't have a lot foot traffic during the day but do have car traffic. It makes me nervous to think I will be by myself in a business where people can come and go openly. I don't want criminals to get any ideas. So, I need suggestions on how to become less attractive to criminals. My husband would like to start the business slow and build a clientele by having only his clients and walk-ins to begin with. His clients I don't mind but walk-ins is the problem. My ideas: 1) To hire one or two people on commission bases 2) appointments only 3) appointments only with employees on a commission base only - to start with 3) of course cameras 4) have a buzz door to let people in 5) get a dog. Please, give me some suggestions on what to do with this situation. (I do know if we hire employees my husband slow build up clientele plan would not work) with that do the commission base employees bring in their own business or do we bring to them? IT might be better, frankly, to offer the building out to someone else on a lease purchase basis
and find one that has more immediate access to the demographics you like. YOU said it cost
next to nothing, so, your risk on a lease out option is minimal.

Is it true that digital SLR cameras are not allowed at live shows?

I got tickets to a supershow in december and i just bought a new SLR camera for this specific event but people have been telling me that security doesnt allow SLR's. I know they dont allow video recording but not allowing SLR's sounds stupid. Anyone know for sure what their policy is?

When we went to ECW/SD tour in Newcastle, Australia, there was an announcement before the show started encouraging us to take as many pics as we liked of our favourite superstars, but forbidding us to do videos.

They didnt mention any styles of camera that were allowed to be used, however, I think you would need a SLR as I had a 10mp digital with a good optical zoom and still found it hard to take good pics.

35mm film and camera through airport security?

I'll be going on vacation tomorrow, and was wondering if I can take my 35mm camera and film through the security. I've heard that the x-rays ruin film. It is unexposed Ilford 100 film, and I have four rolls, one of which is actually inside of the camera now. Do I need to take it out of the camera before I go through security? Should I ask them to inspect the film by hand? Will they even do that?If not, how can I make sure the film does not get ruined? Thank you!

Wow. This type of question has been stirring hornets nest for ages... ... ... i'll give a brief summary of my conclusions

1. X-ray scans are cullmulative. The more scans, the more damage it will do.
2. Most people say; ISO 400 or under can withstand up to 5 scans before any noticable drop in quality (says kodak)
3. If you fly in the US, and have to adher to the TSA rules, you can request a hand inspection and they cannot say "no". If they do, you need to speak to someone higher up who knows the rules a bit better.
4. In you are flying through London, everything will be scanned.
5. MOST IMPORTANT: be polite about it. No need to sound like a drunken loon spouting rights and invasion of privacy. That will cause more harm than good.

Personally: I get my film hand-checked when ever I can. I arrive at the airport early so there will be no problems. I haven't had any problems in (Canada, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Australia).

Some airport security has said that 400 speed film is safe for x-ray use. I've gave the following explainations, and before I could finish... ...
1) "Actually, the x-ray process is cullulmulative. The more x-rays it goes through the more likelyhood that it will damage the film. I will be traveling through multiple airports and I'm trying to minimize the exposure to the film. THe reason is because X-rays are actually light. Albiet a small amount of light. When enough light hits the film, it will ruin the film. It is like jabbing a thumb into someones throat. For the first inch there will be no noticable damage, the skin is quite plyable. But eventually when the thumb punctures through the neck, there's going to be blood everywhere. I'm just trying to minimize that margin of error officier."
2) "Actually, I plan on devloping this film myself using something called 'pushing'. Put it simply, I can develop this film as if it were rated for ASA 6400. I also have a few sheets of film that I have experiemented on. The ASA equivalent would be closer to 25000. This is accomplished by enlongating the devlopment times and it can achieve a variety of different effects that I may utilize in the future, officer"

I have a security camera. That has night vision on it. Problem is I don't have a dvr. What I do have is my cpu, a digital cable box that has dvr, and the camera and receiver. Is there anyway I can record footage with these items? If not what would be my cheapest route?

If the cam receiver has a USB plug, it can tether to the computer.
If it's "Plug-n-Play" it should be detected and self power through the USB line.

Then, since video takes huge amounts of hard drive, you want a 'motion detection' software, to capture things that are moving while in the camera's field of view. That reduces the space needed on the drive.

Hook all of these things up and test it indoors to see how it works, alignment, and so on.
"Save" from the software selected onto the computer, to a folder you create. Somewhere on the desktop is handy to get to.

The most important thing to have, when setting up an internet-based camera (called an IP camera), is to have a good broadband (non-dialup, always on) internet connection at your house. It doesn't have to be high-speed cable modem (from your cable company) or fiber-optic (like Verizon FiOS or ATT U-verse), but at least a DSL-line from your phone company.

The IP cameras (or even a webcam connected to one of your computers) need to be connected to a home "network" or LAN (Local Area Network) via either WiFi --for wireless cams-- or using regular Ethernet (Cat5 or Cat6) cables to an internet router. If you just plan on having one camera connected to your PC, then you could use the computer as the "router", but routers are cheap ($20-$40 if you shop wisely) and simple to set up.

Your iPhone or Android device would simply use a web browser to log onto your home network, using an IP address & password, and you would watch your camera just like watching a YouTube feed, except that it would be "live".

In short unless you have perfect lighting a good CCD camera will outperform an equivalent CMOS camera.

File Size:
The smaller the files size the more images that are able to be sent and the faster they can be processed improving both FPS and speed. File size is the heart of any DVR and goes far beyond just its streaming capabilities as it also determines the recoding storage time, how much you can back up at once, how fast it renders and searches video.

IP cameras have up to a 5X larger file size then analog cameras. (at same resolution) I have seen MP cameras that on 2MP resolution are over 300X (%3000) larger then our X3 DVR on a CIF image. This is an extreme case but generally speaking IP cameras have a much larger file size.

Most routers and switches are not designed to handle IP cameras they have enough bandwidth but they are not able to process the amounts of commands. (9 IP cameras 30FP is 230 instructions per second) standard routers have enough bandwidth (up to 1GB) but cant handle the amount of tasks (instructions) so frames get dropped latency is introduced and the effectiveness of other devices such as POS, printers and dats storage can be affected and compromised.


Donât get me wrong there are some brutal analog cameras and DVR out there but If you see a good D1 resolution image such as Ascendents Hardware compressed you will not be so quick to join the IP bandwagon.

IP is a young and emerging technology and I have no doubt that in the future it will outperform analog cameras but its not a mature technology yet. Once we start to get standard IP platforms, get rid of license feesâ and existing networks have larger bandwidths then IP video will be a good solution, but until then analog is the way to go.

Make sure you get good cameras as well, Ascendent has the best IR outdoor cameras on the market and are about %50 less then Bosch while offering triple the distance.

How to install security cameras and ethernet in new home?

I am having a brand new house built, in the next couple of weeks it will be at the point where I need to install my own ethernet and security cameras before drywall goes up as the builders do not do this themselves. If anyone has any tips of how to online it will be much appreciated. I want ethernet in every room and 4 cameras out doors.

First off, plan. Walk the layout carefully and a paper map that you can mark up may be helpful as well. You can make a photocopy of a floor plan or hand draw this, it doesn't need to be exact, but you need a really good idea of where you are putting things.
Before you do anything else plan where your router will go. This is the most important thing to plan for because once the dry wall is up you will not be able to change your mind on it. Make sure to plan for any kind of ISP you may choose to have in the future, so both cable and telephone will need to be wired into this room where the router will be. That way if you decide to change ISP's they can install the modem in that same room. Trust me, nothing is worse than having your Ethernet wiring job perfect only to find out that it is then useless because you can't put the modem in the room designed for the router.
Make sure when you layout where the cables will go that they will be protected. None should be exposed to extreme heat or cold and you especially want to make sure they will not be accessible to small animals that may get under the house or into the attic. Small critters love to chew cables, they will destroy your Ethernet very fast and all will be for naught.
Install your patch panel. All of your Ethernet cables will need to run to a patch panel if you want this to look clean. I do not recommend putting the panel built into the wall, instead plan to have it in a place where you can quickly remove it from the wall so you can re-punch any runs that need it in the future.
Run the cables. Run each cable then from the patch panel to their destination making sure to leave slack at both ends, usually between 6 to 9 inches of slack on each end is plenty to then work with it. Do not punch down anything yet. Make sure when running the cable that it is out of the way of where the drywall will be installed and that you do not kink or crimp anywhere, especially around corners. A rule of thumb is that the Ethernet cable should never bend more than if you were to wrap it around your hand. That is about the tightest corner you want to make it do safely.
Attach the Ethernet cable up and out of the way using a staple gun with special wiring staples (they are wider and rounded so they don't kink the cable but you still need to be cautious when putting them in, don't puncture the cable at all) or you can use some nails hammered in on each side of the cable and bent over to hold them in place. the second method is safer but more time consuming.
When planning and running the cables run at least 1 spare to each outlet. This will help you out later if you make a mistake or need to replace one cable. You may also want to run a fish line, no not fishing line, a fish line. It can really be just about any durable string you can use to pull a cable through the wall after the drywall is in place in case you need to replace one cable.
Make sure to mark each cable on both ends. Come up with a system that works for you, I usually just number them then mark those numbers on my map. Some people designate the room the cable goes to a letter and the outlet gets a number then the port on that outlet gets a number as well so those look like: A-3-1 (just an example). By marking them all on both ends you can trace each wire out when you are ready to punch them down and know which port goes where.
Once they are all run, you have slack, you are positive they are out of the way for the dry wall to go up, just wait for the house to be finished. When it is done punch down your cables at the patch panel, punch down your ports for each outlet (don't put ports on the spare cables just leave them in the wall just for emergencies). Put your face plates up then you will need your modem plugged into your router, your router will need to plug into a switch (because you will probably need a lot more ports than a router will give you) then the switch will need to connect to your patch panel.
Once that is all connected and ready to go you will need to go around and test your ports. You may want an Ethernet tester for this to verify you have the correct pin out. I would recommend doing a search online for the pin out config.
For the security camera's I would recommend using WiFi capable cameras for outside and Ethernet connected ones for inside. Or go WiFi with all of them. Just make sure you have an electrician install a weatherproof/tamper-proof power outlet near where you want them and you are good.

Most IR cameras do not give good images in the dark specially cameras under $200. Many companies claim good night vision but there are only a handful of brands who give night vision over 30 feet out doors. normally if a cameras is rated 150 feet of IR it will give you ok images at 30 feet at night and good images at about 20 if rated for 60 feet you might get 15 indoors and will be useless outdoors.

In the world of DVRs you can find the equivalent of a $10,000 Kia and a $350,000 Ferrari and everything in between. Both have 4 wheels and windshield but that where the similarities end, itâs under the hood that counts. Just like any other consumer electronic in the end you get what you pay for.

The smaller the files size the more images are able to be sent, and the faster they can be processed improving both FPS and speed. File size is the heart of any DVR and goes far beyond just its streaming capabilities, as it also determines the recording storage time, how much you can back up at once, how fast it renders and searches video. The file size of a DVR impacts the performance of the DVR in just about every aspect from speed to longevity and is often the most important spec of any DVR.

If you are buying a DVR and streaming is a high priority I suggest you ask for a demo and connect to the DVR to make sure it is able to stream fast enough for your needs. Most DVRs say they have remote viewing but it is often too slow and laggy to be of any use especially if it is a standalone.

Just like any other consumer electronic in the end you get what you pay for. Most retailers and sellers make about a 40-80% profit margin, this is after costs like shipping and overhead. That means when you buy a product that costs $100.00 the manufacturer usually has only spent $30 to build it which simply means itâs not a good product and will probably have a working life of about 2 months. Cheap products are like disposable razors they are NOT designed to last for a long time and you will end up replacing them every 2 months.

DVRs need to be good quality as they run 24/7 (20X more than the average electronic device) and process anywhere from 30-480 frames per second which in a year is over 15 billion images, and a good DVR should last 3-5 years.

Again if you are going to buy no name products save money and get dummy cameras they are just as affective and you will be less disappointed.

Having just returned from Mumbai this morning, I'll mention a few things.

1. Sanjay Gandhi National Park
There's a safari bus tour to view lions and tigers. Don't get too excited about it. You board a schoolbus with metal grills on the windows. You might think the metal grills are to protect the tourists from the animals, but I suspect it's to keep the tourists inside the bus. The bus makes so much noise that it will scare most wildlife away. The lions and tigers are in caged habitats and are fairly inactive during the mid-day heat. You might see some deer along the way if the bus doesn't frighten them away. It isn't worth paying an extra Rs 500 for a videotaping permit.

See the Kanheri Caves. You will need sneakers, a flashlight, lots of water, and about 4 hours to see all of them. These are magnificent, and you will marvel at how dedicated the monks were to build them. Definitely grab one of the tour guides (usually with a wooden walking stick) to take you around and tell you how the monks lived among the caves. Their design of the caves, carvings, paintings, water collection pools, bathing areas, clothes washing areas, cooking areas, etc. was nothing less than genius. A tour guide found us wandering aimlessly, but with his help everything made sense. We paid him Rs 200 for a couple hours of his time and help with elders in our group, and it was worth it. Watch out for the monkeys. They can be viscious if they know you have food, so DO NOT FEED THEM!!

2. Walk along the Worli Seaface.

3. Take a drive on the Bandra-Worli Sealink.

4. See the Hajiali masjid.

5. See Taj Hotel

6. See Nariman point

7. See the Gateway to India

8. See the Elephanta Caves

9. See the Bombay Stock Exchange and the smaller version of the brass bull that's in NYC

11. See the Siddhi Vinayak temple (absolutely no cameras allowed inside the security checkpoint)

12. Walk on the Mahalaxmi Racetrack and see the horses being exercised in the mornings.

13. See Victoria Terminal Train station during rush hour (no photography allowed).

14. Go shopping in Dadar.

15. Go shopping on Fashion Street.

There's much more, but that's all my wife could show me in a few days.

use ordinary lighting for security at night. it ups the bar for anyone trying to do wrong if clearly visible, so that is as much a deterrent as cameras. ordinary lighting will give more detail and color which are important clues to making an ID. IR is monochrome and blurry and in some cases not admissable as evidence.

the cheap IR illuminators simply use LED's. they provide enough IR to be useful at about 2 meters (6 feet) maximum distance, great for camcorders at parties. totally useless for surveilence. you need the military type IR lamps, about the size of a small refrigerator to cover a parking lot.

not seen by human? get real, all a crook has to do is use a pocket digital camera to find IR illumination sources. doh.

The most important thing to have, when setting up an internet-based camera (called an IP camera), is to have a good broadband (non-dialup, always on) internet connection at your house. It doesn't have to be high-speed cable modem (from your cable company) or fiber-optic (like Verizon FiOS or ATT U-verse), but at least a DSL-line from your phone company.

The IP cameras (or even a webcam connected to one of your computers) need to be connected to a home "network" or LAN (Local Area Network) via either WiFi --for wireless cams-- or using regular Ethernet (Cat5 or Cat6) cables to an internet router. If you just plan on having one camera connected to your PC, then you could use the computer as the "router", but routers are cheap ($20-$40 if you shop wisely) and simple to set up.

Your iPhone or Android device would simply use a web browser to log onto your home network, using an IP address & password, and you would watch your camera just like watching a YouTube feed, except that it would be "live".
