Can u netwk home devices (security cams, lighting, energy monitoring)without monthly fee?

amy

Building a new home and want to utilize the great features of home networking like remote monitoring of security cameras, change lighting, etc via Iphone app but want to avoid the monthly fees for monitoring services, etc. Any ideas?

Answer
I have been looking into the same things I believe what you want to do is available now. For security cameras, there are DVR systems and individual network cameras that allow the video to be streamed online. All you need is internet access and you can watch your cameras online. For home automation, the place that seems to have a reasonable amount of information is Smarthome.

Answer
Hello
There are 2 types of DVR;s PC based and a standalone

PC (a card and software installed that uses your PC to store recorded video)
Standalone looks like a DVD player non PC based (does not use PC to record images)

Not all CCTV equipment is created equal, in fact there are many options that offer varying performance much like the automobile industry. In the world of CCTV you can find the equivalent of a $2,000 golf cart and a $350,000 Ferrari and everything in between. Both have 4 wheels but that's where the similarities end, itâs under the hood that counts.

Just like any other consumer electronic in the end you get what you pay for. Most retailers and sellers make about a 40-80% profit margin, this is after costs like shipping and overhead. That means when you buy a product that costs $100.00 the manufacturer usually has only spent $30 to build it which simply means itâs not a good product and will probably have a working life of about 2 months. There is a reason these products are 1/10 of the price of good and reliable DVR brand names. The type of seller these products attract are online sellers (ebay) and will make profits margins as low as 2% which means they canât afford to offer good service or allow for RMAs (returns). Cheap products are like disposable razors they are NOT designed to last for a long time and you will end up replacing them every 2 months.

Now some products can be made cheaply like ipod cases, screen protectors, and other simple products with no moving parts or electronics. DVRs need to be good quality as they run 24/7 (20X more than the average electronic device) and process anywhere from 30-480 frames per second which in a year is over 15 billion images, and a good DVR should last 3-5 years.

A true DVR and camera require years of research and development to facilitate the seamless integration of both the hardware and software. DVRs are highly complex systems that must run 24/7, processing millions of images per day and are one of the few products that canât be made both well and cheaply. Cheap and inexpensive products like Q-see, X10, Swan, Lorex, and other low grade DVRâs and cameras sold by Tiger Direct, Target , Newegg, radio shack Sams Club, are not used by any security professional and should only be used by hobbyists.

To be honest these retailers sells complete Garbage and is not used by anyone who has worked with CCTV or security products. They are poor quality especially for IR cameras, due to low quality material, low S/N ratio, and c grade CCD image chips.

If you are only going to spend 70$ on cameras then you should buy 15 dummy cameras they will be just as effective and cheaper.

Also as far as night vision or IR cameras go most do not give good images in the dark. Many companies claim good night vision but there are only a handful of brands who give night vision over 30 feet out doors. normally if a cameras is rated 150 feet of IR it will give you ok images at 30 feet at night and good images at about 20 if rated for 60 feet you might get 15 indoors and will be useless outdoors.

Some good CCTV brands that I recommend are Bosch, Pelco, Honeywell and Ascendent.

http://www.ascendentgroup.com (Great IR cameras)
www.honeywell.com
www.pelco.com/
http://www.bosch.com

Economical DVR's
Two good economical DVRs I would recommend are Ascendent's AVP-4120 DVR or Pelco's DX-400. They will allow you to view all your cameras instantly from anywhere in the world using either IE, or a client software. The AVP-4120 uses the latest H.264 codec to improve streaming and recording time, and will allow PCs and Apple computers to remotely view cameras. These are the DVRs I would recommend that are good quality and affordable from companies who stand behind there products.

Again if you are going to buy cheap CCTV products, save money and get dummy cameras they are just as affective and you will be less disappointed.

Hope this Helps,

Where is the best place to buy a security camera?

Nellygirl2

Last night someone turned on the water faucet that is behind the shrubs. So, someone had to be scoping out the house my parents or "Mother" called the cops because she believed it was something serious. They found a golf club! Im guessing this person was going to beat whoever came out to check it out but punk out or we waited too long to even know that the water was even on. I heard it but didn't think much about it and my sister thought it was raining lol.

Answer
Bunny Im assuming you have no experience in CCTV products. just because a camera says high resolution and long range does not make it either, no professional recommends q see products.

Few problems:
480TVL is not high resolution
36 LED's (q see are not very powerful) will give about 35ft
6mm Lens (fixed lens cant adjust view 42 degrees (not 80 feet day or night)

Here is a true high resolution outdoor IR Camera
VIS-56IR-2910 (Ascendent Technology Group)
High Resolution outdoor Long-Range IR Camera
550TVL Day (600TVL at night)
56 high output IR LED's (110ft illumination)
2.9-10mm IR corrected lens
IP 67 nema 4x Rugged outdoor housing

bunny there no point in giving advice when you don;t know what your talking about.

Hello you need a DVR and Camera

2 types of DVR's Standalone and PC based

Brand names who make good DVR's make good cameras.
I recommend Ascendent, Bosch, Pelco, Honeywell: Ascendent is best price and conformance but they are less well known.

I suggest you buy a PC based DVR has they have more processing power and normally have a much smaller file size and offer more features then Standalone DVR's. I know many people buy a cheap standalone DVR, only to upgrade to a PC based in 6 months especially when they are using it to manage a store remotely. Also PC based allows you to record up to 64 cameras where a standalone will have a limit of 16.

Many people have the misconception that a PC-Based DVR is simply an off-the-shelf PC with video capture (encoder) cards, display (decoder) cards and some generic OEM software. A true DVR requires years of research and development to facilitate the seamless integration of both the hardware and software. DVRs are highly complex systems that must run 24/7, processing millions of images per day. This makes consumer-level hardware inadequate for DVRs which is why Ascendent uses custom-built PCs with performance-level hardware.

My personal favorite DVR is Ascendent X4 series: Ascendentâs Tri-Fusion Hybrid Platform allows for the creation of a true hybrid surveillance system by utilizing the advantages of Analog, Megapixel, and IP technologies for unparalleled customization and expandability. I am working on government projects and use Ascendent cameras and DVR because the offer superior performance and cost less then comparable brands like bosh, Honeywell and pelco.

The X4 also uses the latest H.264/SVC codec offer video substantially better quality,. While its file size sizes is 30% smaller than MPEG-4, 60% smaller than MPEG-2, and exponentially smaller than MJPEG.

File size is crucial to streaming because most DVRâs on the market record at real time performance (30FPS per channel) so on a 4CH is trying to send 120, 8CH 240, and a 16CH 480 images per second which requires way too much bandwidth even for the most extreme internet connections.

The smaller the files size the more images are able to be sent, and the faster they can be processed improving both FPS and speed. File size is the heart of any DVR and goes far beyond just its streaming capabilities, as it also determines the recording storage time, how much you can back up at once, how fast it renders and searches video. The file size of a DVR impacts the performance of the DVR in just about every aspect from speed to longevity and is often the most important spec of any DVR.

If you are buying a DVR and streaming is a high priority I suggest you ask for a demo and connect to the DVR to make sure it is able to stream fast enough for your needs. Most DVRs say they have remote viewing but it is often too slow and laggy to be of any use especially if it is a standalone. Some good DVR brands that I recommend are Bosch, Pelco, Honeywell and Ascendent. These brands are what security professionals use, Q-see, Swan and Lorex are only used in residential applications because they are sold by Tiger Direct, Spytown, Newegg, Sams Club, Costco and other retail outlets but are not used by any security professionals also their tech support rarely speaks English as their first language...

These brand manufacturers also have a complete line of CCTV cameras for any application from residential to military.

http://www.ascendentgroup.com (Recommend)
http://www.honeywell.com
http://www.pelco.com/
http://www.bosch.com

I have done projects that required cameras to stream over satellite and cellular networks and the only DVR that could provide the video streaming was Ascendent Technology Groupâs X3 DVR. To give you an example of what a good DVR should stream like, below are instructions on how to connect to Ascendent's X3 DVR using Internet Explorer.

Instructions on how to connect to Ascendentâs DVR with Internet Explorer:

1) http://connect.ascendentgroup.com/ (Must be Internet explorer)
2) Install active X control
3) Hit âConnect)
4) DVR type PC
5) DVR code SITE-100
6) User ID Demo (case sensitive)
7) Password demo (lower case)
8) Hit extend config
9) IP address: 24.66.224.223
10) And hit connect

Again I recommend going with a PC based DVR but if you don't want to spend the money I suggest Ascendent's AVP-4120 DVR or Pelco's DX-4000 as they will allow you to view all your cameras instantly from anywhere in the world using either IE. The AVP-8240DVDUSB will also allow MAC platforms as well as PC to remotely view cameras and it uses the new H.264 codec but no standalone will offer the video streaming or performance a good PC based DVR will.

How much do they monitor the security cameras in stores?

easy rider

Are there people sitting there continuously monitoring the cameras, or at the end of the day do they sit down and watch through it all, or are the cameras just a deterent that isn't really monitored? at a reasonably large store i'm talking about

Answer
Yes, security sits and watches customers. Often very, very closely.

Many, many years ago my son and I and my wife were at Sears and my son pocketed something he shouldn't have. He did it so that neither I nor his mother knew it. When we walked out the door, we were all stopped and brought back inside by security. When they took us in the back, they showed us the tape of him doing it and they knew that neither his mom nor I saw him take it.

They didn't call the police, luckily. Maybe they knew by our reaction that we would handle things properly when we got him home. My son was told that he was not allowed back in the store, permanently, otherwise they would call the police.

Yes, they sit and watch!

Security Cameras?

Ryan

is there a way to view security cameras online from stores all over the united states?

Answer
yes, but MAJOR security breach and hacking are involved. But only a certain percentage know how to operate such tasks and most of them turn out to be criminals.

But there is a way to look at every camera in a building. All you have to do really is just look for a wire that connects to the monitor and the camera, cut it, add a second wire to connect to your screen either wirelessly or wired.. and there you go... But if your planning to do something illigal, dont do this, you'll find your self going to prison for invasion / hacking (Im guessing a couple of years in prison)

We need to put up a security system at our church building since we have had a lot of incidences recently. How?

Rob D

We need to put up a security system at our church building since we have had a lot of incidences recently. However, looking online at surveillance systems there are so many different kind offered that it is confusing and difficult which to choose from. Is there anyone who can help me to pick the best system for my needs? My needs are as follows:

1.Up to 100 ft clear visibility day or night.
2.Outdoor (California)/weather resistant
3.At least one camera that can detect/read license plates
4.Good tradeoff between cost and quality.
5.4 cameras or more.

Answer
You could spend a lot of money trying to configure a custom system. That would ensure that you got the exact system that you want but for simplicity there are packages that are cost effective and come with everything needed to get the system up and running.

I would recommend a standalone package so that way you don't to worry about a PC. The DVR connects to the cameras and you can connect the DVR to a TV or a monitor and even view the video remotely via the web or iPhone/Android smartphone.

Our best value 4-camera standalone system:

A QUESTION ABOUT SECURITY CAMERAS!?

Abc D

Why are thier quality so bad?
I mean if its like at least 5 megapixel you can at least see the robbers face clearly and all hes wearing.
but security cameras are fuzzy, sometimes black and white, and blurry?
I mean whouldnt it be much easier to get a better quality camera?

Answer
Cheapo crap camera plugged into VCR: $100
High Quality CCTV system: $3,000

Both have the same deterrent value, and neither has the ability to see through a ski mask. Who is going to spend $5,000 on security equipment that can be defeated by a $15 purchase?

$100 is a sound investment, but the $5,000 camera is not 50 times more likely to prevent a robbery. And neither the $100 camera nor the $5000 is likely to actually get back the $300 stolen from the cash register.

Eh, my solution if I am setting this up: Get a crappy used computer, a high-quality webcam ($50), a long USB chord ($50) so the computer can be kept hidden in a file cabinet or something. Set it to record 24/7, and delete older recordings automatically when space needs to be freed. Just as cheap, deters just as much, and has quality similar to the $3000 system.

do fake security cameras deter home burglaries?

sfdj66

do dummy cameras work to deter crime in the home

Answer
A fake security camera might fool a burglar, but you're essentially rolling the dice. Experienced criminals can spot the difference between a real camera and a fake - a clear piece of glass vs. an actual lens, for example.

Take a few minutes to check out this entry from a home security blog and see what you think.

How does a Security Camera work?

Taufan

Answer
Security cameras are useful in improving the safety of residential and business buildings. Home security camera systems have gained phenomenal popularity over the years. With spectacularly enhanced digital imagery and moderate working costs, the use of security cameras has become quite widespread. The use of security camera systems is no longer limited to banks or department stores but is increasingly being used for residential security also.

Home security camera systems let you keep track of children at play and simultaneously can keep an eye on the front door. They vary in their appropriateness and operation, and it is imperative that the proper selection is made based on individual requirements to ensure their effectiveness.

While choosing a home security camera system you must decide on the area to be observed, and the camera should be located at a suitable distance in order to focus on the preferred area. In case there is a need to mount the camera on a wall or structure, a mounting bracket can be placed at the predetermined spot, and the position of mounting screws can be indicated.

While opting for a wired system, the camera and monitor should be connected in accordance with instructions. Care should be taken to not expose the wiring, so the home security system cannot be sabotaged. And always remember to keep these gadgets out of reach of children.

Another crucial issue that should also be given adequate importance is the number of cameras that one would like to employ in the home security camera system. Some systems have room for only one or two, whereas other systems offer more. There are also camera systems which incorporate microphones, allowing you to hear and see the required object at the same time.

Home Security Systems provides detailed information on Home Security Systems, Wireless Home Security Systems, Home Security Alarm Systems, Home Security Camera Systems and more. Home Security Systems is affiliated with Wireless Home Security Systems.

Small business owners, how much to you pay for your security system with camera surveillance?

a new day

I am writing a business plan and need an estimate for start up costs. I am looking into opening up a children's play cafe of approx 4500 sf. I would like to know..

How much was you initial investment for your camera/security system including installation?
How much do you pay per month for monitoring?

I can't seem to get estimates or answers from any company without them wanting to come out to give a quote. We don't have a location yet, so that's not possible. Thanks in advance!

Answer
It depends on a lot of factors like the kind of cameras you want, the type of recorder, and the quality of installation. For a space like 4500 sf you could install a DIY system for less than $1,000 or purchase a megapixel network video solution that would cost over $10,000 installed.

For budgeting purposes I would budget $5,000 and you should be able to get a decent system installed for that.

use of Wi-Fi technology?

karthika R

tell me the use of Wi-Fi technology in detail

Answer
Wi-Fi was originally a brand licensed by the Wi-Fi Alliance to describe the embedded technology of wireless local area networks (WLAN) based on the IEEE 802.11 standard. As of 2007, common use of the term Wi-Fi has broadened to describe the generic wireless interface of mobile computing devices, such as laptops in LANs.[citation needed] The term Wi-Fi was chosen as a play on the term "Hi-Fi", and is often thought to be an abbreviation for wireless fidelity. Wi-Fi and the Wi-Fi CERTIFIED logo are registered trademarks of the Wi-Fi Alliance, the trade organization that tests and certifies equipment compliance with the 802.11x standards.

Common uses for Wi-Fi include Internet and VoIP phone access, gaming, and network connectivity for consumer electronics such as televisions, DVD players, and digital cameras. In spite of media reports about possible health risks from Wi-Fi, scientific studies have failed to show a causal effect.
Technical information

Main article: Wi-Fi Technical Information

Wi-Fi networks use radio technologies called IEEE 802.11. These technologies have gone through several generations since their inception in 1997. Wi-Fi is supported to different extents under Microsoft Windows, Apple Computer Mac OS and open source Unix and Linux operating systems.

Uses

A person with a Wi-Fi enabled device such as a PC, cell phone or PDA can connect to the Internet when in proximity of an access point. The region covered by one or several access points is called a hotspot. Hotspots can range from a single room to many square miles of overlapping hotspots. Wi-Fi can also be used to create a mesh network. Both architectures are used in community networks.[citation needed]

Wi-Fi also allows connectivity in peer-to-peer (wireless ad-hoc network) mode, which enables devices to connect directly with each other. This connectivity mode is useful in consumer electronics and gaming applications.

When the technology was first commercialized there were many problems because consumers could not be sure that products from different vendors would work together. The Wi-Fi Alliance began as a community to solve this issue so as to address the needs of the end user and allow the technology to mature. The Alliance created the branding Wi-Fi CERTIFIED to show consumers that products are interoperable with other products displaying the same branding.

Home Wi-Fi clients come in many shapes and sizes, from stationary PCs to digital cameras. The trend as of 2007 is to incorporate wireless into every electronic where mobility is desired.[citation needed]

Wi-Fi devices in home or consumer-type environments can connect via a broadband Internet connection into a single router which can serve both wired and wireless clients. They can also use ad-hoc mode for client to client connections, and be built into non-computer devices to enable wireless connectivity to the Internet.

Business and industrial Wi-Fi has become ubiquitous as of 2007. In business environments, increasing the number of Wi-Fi access points provides redundancy, support for fast roaming and increase overall network capacity by using more channels or creating smaller cells. Wi-Fi enables wireless voice applications (VoWLAN or WVOIP). Over the years, Wi-Fi implementations have moved toward 'thin' access points, with more of the network intelligence housed in a centralized network appliance, relegating individual Access Points to be simply 'dumb' radios. Outdoor applications may utilize true mesh topologies. As of 2007, Wi-Fi installations can provide a proactive, self-managed network that functions as a security gateway, firewall, DHCP server, intrusion detection system, and a myriad of other features not previously considered relevant to a wireless network.[citation needed]

The most publicly visible use of Wi-Fi is at hotspots, including:

* Free Wi-Fi at venues like Panera Bread, It's a Grind Coffee House, select hotels, and over 100,000 locations in the USA has been growing in popularity. According to a door-to-door survey in San Jose, CA, the number of venues and users is growing fast.[citation needed]
* Paid Wi-Fi at venues like Starbucks, McDonalds, and at hotels. This trend is growing rapidly at venues that require a higher rate of customer churn, such as sit-down restaurants.[citation needed]
* Metropolitan-wide WiFi (Mu-Fi) already has more than 300 projects in process.[3]

Security cameras online. plz help?

Q. my friend was telling me you can watch live cameras. i mean like in stores or something. where do i go? do i need to download something? plz give me a website that actually works.

Answer
Hello

Honey H that camera is extemely low quality: 420TVL (that chip was not designed to be used for night vision it will give very grainy images, and is low resolution)

The 24 IR LED;s will not give you 40FT of night vision closer to 20 and they dont have any controls for the IR so it will over exspose the first 10 feet and wont have enough light to see past 30 feet.

Please don't give advice when you have clearly never worked with CCTV equipment.

What you want is a DVR a DVR converts analog cameras and as well as storing images on site allows you to distribute video over LAN and WAN networks. (internet and network) this way you have both on site storage and recording at your house.

Here is a DVR that will work perfectly for you.

http://www.ascendentgroup.com/x4s.htm

Just about any Analog DVR will do what you are looking for and not only display them but record them as well they will also allow you to view them over the internet from a Iphone or laptop.

Many people have a misconception that IP has Superior scalability then Analog but with the advancements with DVR's this simply isn't true, you cn do up to 16,000 cameras each camera could even be from a different DVR and a different site.

And when you are using the internet to connect multiple sites together analog transmits over the internet faster with less latency using less bandwidth allowing you not only to view and monitor a situation real time but also effective control PTZ cameras.

What is the Advantage of IP?
Many of the so called advantages of IP simply don't hold water in the real world, IP is mainly Hype and marketing and outside of a few niche applications such as 1 or 2 camera installs, where MP cameras are needed or large scale wireless projects which represent about 2% of the total CCTV market, IP has very few advantages compared to analog based on performance, cost and reliability. (yet all companies touting IP will often use MP cameras to demonstrate the advantages of IP)

IP video is more about marketing then it is about performance as larger companies like Bosch pelco Honeywell axis can change for both hardware and software and once you use there cameras you have to keep using there cameras unlike analog.

Also IP sounds great, plug and play, Better image quality, use existing infrastructure, who wouldnât want that unfortunately this is often not the case.

IP cameras are based on CMOS
Analog cameras are based on CCD (usually)

A CMOS sensor is constructed using a array of pixels, but unlike CCDâs CMOS do not have a capacitor to store the charge for each pixel. The rows of pixels are activated sequentially rather then individually

This means CMOS has some significant disadvantages compared to CCD, this means CMOS
have inferior ability to cope with ambient lighting such as back light, bright, deep shadows contrasts, low light and IR this is also known as the real word.

In short unless you have perfect lighting a good CCD camera will outperform an equivalent CMOS camera.

File Size:
The smaller the files size the more images that are able to be sent and the faster they can be processed improving both FPS and speed. File size is the heart of any DVR and goes far beyond just its streaming capabilities as it also determines the recoding storage time, how much you can back up at once, how fast it renders and searches video.

IP cameras have up to a 5X larger file size then analog cameras. (at same resolution) I have seen MP cameras that on 2MP resolution are over 300X (%3000) larger then our X3 DVR on a CIF image. This is an extreme case but generally speaking IP cameras have a much larger file size.

Most routers and switches are not designed to handle IP cameras they have enough bandwidth but they are not able to process the amounts of commands. (9 IP cameras 30FP is 230 instructions per second) standard routers have enough bandwidth (up to 1GB) but cant handle the amount of tasks (instructions) so frames get dropped latency is introduced and the effectiveness of other devices such as POS, printers and dats storage can be affected and compromised.

Donât get me wrong there are some brutal analog cameras and DVR out there but If you see a good D1 resolution image such as Ascendents Hardware compressed you will not be so quick to join the IP bandwagon.

IP is a young and emerging technology and I have no doubt that in the future it will outperform analog cameras but its not a mature technology yet. Once we start to get standard IP platforms, get rid of license feesâ and existing networks have larger bandwidths then IP video will be a good solution, but until then analog is the way to go.

Make sure you get good cameras as well, Ascendent has the best IR outdoor cameras on the market and are about %50 less then Bosch while offering triple the distance.

Please suggest some LONG range wireless security cameras for neighborhood?

Kosh

We're looking into some wireless video survellience cameras for our subdivision.

What I'm looking for, ideally, is a receiver station which can recive the signals from multiple cameras so we can add on later (probably starting with 2-3 cameras maybe up to 4 or 6 later).

I see a lot of expensive cameras with a 100' and sometimes 1000' line-of-sight range but our needs are no less than 1000' obstructed. Ideally we'd like to get a functional 2000' range system.

We're on a very limited budget and don't need the fancy pan-and-tilt or zoom features; just a decent quality cam with a long range wireless capability.

We'll use a computer with video capture card to record the signal after the receiver. So any recommendations for DVR / capture cards and/or software is also appreciated. However the most urgent need for info is on the cameras.
Thanks for links or whatever.

We really don't have a specific budget right now. We're mostly trying to find the bottom line how much a wireless system of this nature would cost. Right now the limiting factor seems to be wireless range (which is very limited even on cameras I've seen cosing over $1000)
Intel, not sure what the 2 price ranges are you provided but I am looking at the links, trying to find the best solution.

Rachael, we're in Central Florida. Lots of rain/humidity but no snow.

As for range, I imagine we could work with 1000' as long as that was a solid 1000' through a neighborhood with trees and such (but over the tops of houses).

Note: We have cable and phone lines running through the entire area. Not sure if we could use these. Problem is we don't want to depend on continued cooperation from residents (people come and go).

Answer
What are we talking about in terms of budget?
Ill only provide you with links:

Your talking at least $1000. (and that's per quality cam not including the receiver)

2-3 Quality Cameras ($3,000+ including receiver)
4-6 Quality Cameras ($5,000+ including receiver)

2-3 Quality Cameras ($900+ including receiver)
4-6 Quality Cameras ($1,500+ including receiver)

Your talking at least $300+. (and that's per cam)

What is a good usb camera for video surveillance?

eHappy

or anything that i can hook up to a computer

Answer
I would not use a USB camera for a surveillance/security camera.

You might be in a different position, but generally, I have found that the camera needs to be pretty far away from the video monitor - in this case, your computer.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usb#Maximum_useful_distance tells us that USB cables cannot be very long. As well, most web cams do not have "night vision".

Contrast that to the 70+ foot CAT5 or coax cable runs I have connecting different analog surveillance cameras feeding into a security DVR that is on the computer network so I can see what they see through my computer...

If you can't use a security DVR, you can get cards to install in your computer that can use that video, too. Check Frys.com... Electronic Components: Security: Closed Circuit Television: recorders: there are standalone recorders for single or multiple cameras and PCI cards for computers with available expansion slots.

Since you did not tell us which computer, we don't know if this will resolve your issue.

I bought a wireless 4ch DVR Security Camera system?

Kompolaga

I bought a wireless 4ch USB DVR Security Camera system from eBay. But after all I got a camera system I didn't want.

Because it does not record all four cameras at the same time and can't hear the sound from the mic of the cameras.

SO I am wondering If I can use another receiver/dvr software on the wireless cameras to record all four cameras?!

(btw I have Windows 7-64bit)

Please take a look at the cameras from eBay.

Is there an outdoor security camera you can see from your iphone without recording?

NoHearYa

Is there an outdoor security camera you can see from your iphone without recording?
This is for my folks place - they don't have internet or computers.
Is it possible to just install a motion detector camera and check my iphone once in a while to see what ever goes on outside?
They are having quite a number of thefts outside their place day and night.
Thanks

Answer
The Foscam IP cameras are good. They have a programmable motion detector alarm, and can be viewed by iPhone and Android. I have a few, they are reliable.

I have security cameras set up, what software can I use to record images?

Hygor

I have 3 IP cameras set up. And I can see them on the computer. What is a good program so that I record the images (I want it running 15-24 hours a day recording) into an external hardrive or something?

What's a good one? And what's a good cheap one?

I tried searching but I get a lot of overcomplicated responses. It shouldn't be that hard to just record the screen right?

Answer
IP cameras are a waste of Money compared to analog cameras.

Here is a DVR that will work perfectly for you.

http://ascendentdvr.com/x4sdvr/x4s-8240dvd.html

http://www.ascendentgroup.com/~ascendent/HTML%20E-mail/X4S/x4s.html (pricing is dealer so unless your a certified installed you will probably have to pay 25% more which is still a steal of a deal)

IP is like wireless (in theory its perfect) if that was true there would be no wired cameras or analog cameras it would all be wireless IP.

IP cameras are based on CMOS
Analog cameras are based on CCD (usually)

CCD image sensors contain hundreds
of thousands picture elements, called pixels. Each pixel contains a light sensitive element and a capacitor.

(Ascendents X3 DVR achieves file sizes as low as .3KB on normal image quality on a CIF image no IP camera on the market will come close to this) The file size of a DVR impacts the performance of the DVR in just about every aspect from speed to longevity and is often the most import spec of any DVR.

Which security cameras is best ?

Pablo

i wanna to design my 10000 square meter office for security reasons, i want cameras and some fire alarms, i try for these but confuse which types of cameras is best and how many cameras is sufficient for my office and also fire alarms. I want best resolutions and best quality cameras and alarms in cheap

Answer
A good camera make would be swann for quality at a reasonable price and good quality cameras with 700 TVL (television lines) makes for good pictures go for a mix of wide angle lens to cover more area, for areas of wide space you could buy a dome camera with PTZ (Pan=side to side. Tilt=up & down.Z=zoom) these cameras can be put on a program me mode which will move around your space continuously. I would say get a 32 camera DVR (Digital Video Recorder) with a 2TB or larger for long period recording. don't know much about alarms sorry

What's the cheapest security camera with the best quality?

Ie it's cheap but you can see who is creeping on your property. We have a crazy neighbor and need proof it's him before anyone will take action. Any suggestions are much appreciated!

Answer
cctvdirectbuy is an online company that has LOW prices on security surveillance products. I would recommend purchasing one of their high resolution cameras for good picture quality. They have many infrared cameras to choose from, it just depends on how far you want the camera to see. Check out their website when you get a chance!

Getting a security camera?

Isabella D

I'm planning on getting a security camera for my home. What are the types of security cameras available in the market today?

Answer
Because of the advances in technology, there are many types of surveillance cameras available in the market. These are fake security cameras, covert surveillance cameras, wireless security cameras, wired surveillance cameras, night vision security cameras and home surveillance cameras.

Donât get me wrong there are some brutal analog cameras and DVR out there but If you see a good D1 resolution image such as Ascendents Hardware compressed you will not be so quick to join the IP bandwagon.

Answer
1. Dont get a laptop for gaming. When you get tired of having a laptop for gaming and the urge to actually learn something about computers (and not be an alienware dweeb), a laptop is a total fail. upgrades are a pain and way expensive.

2. Dont get an alienware. They are total rip-offs. for desktops at least. they sell nice laptops. Get a pro tech to build you a nice desktop you can game one at highest settings. a nice $1000 desktop built right can handle any game you throw at it. if you want to future proof it, make sure you get a motherboard that supports SLI (nVidia) or Crossfire (ATI/AMD).

3. Dont get McAfee. its shit a PoS virus protection. I have tried (really, i really tested anti-virus programs to protect myself) many many anti-virus programs. from BitDefender to Norton to McAfee to Avast (and many more). the best one habds down is Sunbelt Vipre Anti-Virus. its kicks so much booty.

4. Make sure you get windows 7 ultimate 64-bit.

5. the processor in that is ok, but the whole "Turbo Boost" is for noobs. its more like crappy overclocking. i dont trust it.

I can keep going and going. but i am just saying. stop drooling over alienware. (in the computer tech forums, its for serious noobs and posers haha)

get a tech to build you a nice system and ask him if you can watch him (or her, youd be surprised, women have something to prove!), build it and give an explanation of what you are doing. I do this to my younger bros.

just dont touch the alienware unless you want a seriously mean laptop. but if you want to do some real gaming, and really be a hardcore gamer (we dont just play games), get a desktop.

EDIT: you can thumbs me down all you want, but what i say is true.

I need an outdoor security camera system, capable of shooting in total darkness, that can...?

...record from 50 ft. away.
I need to be able to record a neighbor trespassing and scattering rubbish on my property, but I live over 1/4 mile from their house. AC power is available at a light pole I have but batteries would work also. Any recommendations would be helpful. Thanks.

Answer
Hunters set up cameras in the areas they want to hunt, to see how much game is there. These digital cameras are battery powered, and use motion detectors to trigger the pictures. Some have infrared, so they can't be seen when they take the picture. They are built to be outside in the rain and sun. Put it in a hidden place if possible, because they can get stolen.

Analog,

What do you mean by, Scale back the RAM and user upgrade?

Also i have selected a 500 GB Hard Disk Drive. should i change back to 320 GB?
which is better a 500 GB, 7200rpm or 320 GB, 7200rpm hard disk drive?

Answer
The W520 just came out, so I would advise against since you can get a better CPU with one of the newer models.

If you stick with that, here's my advice:
-Scale back the RAM and user upgrade. It's much cheaper and isn't that hard to do.
-Go with the FHD display. It should be much better.
-Consider a quad core i7 instead of the dual core.

EDIT: I mean go for the lowest possible RAM (2GB I believe) when ordering and buying a separate 8GB DDR3 SODIMM RAM kit for around $90, and then installing it yourself. It's a simple installation (remove one or two screws and a bottom plate, remove old RAM, install new RAM), and it's much cheaper. In fact, I believe the W510 has 4 RAM slots so you can get 12GB including the already installed modules if you do that.

Here's a Lenovo guide for replacing the RAM. Click FRU removal/replacement and then DIMM.
http://www.lenovoservicetraining.com/ion/W510/index.html

Here's how I would order it if I were you:
$1,924.00
Intel Core i7-720QM Processor (6M Cache, 1.60GHz)
Genuine Windows 7 Professional 64
15.6" FHD Display (95% Gamut, 270nit) with LED Backlight
NVIDIA Quadro FX 880M Graphics with 1GB DDR3 memory
4 GB PC3-8500 DDR3 SDRAM 1067MHz SODIMM Memory (2 DIMM)
500 GB Hard Disk Drive, 7200rpm
Multi Recorder Optical Drive (12.7mm)
9 cell Li-Ion Battery - 55++
Intel Centrino Ultimate-N 6300 (3x3 AGN)
Integrated Mobile Broadband - Upgradable
4318 : 1 Year Depot Warranty - TopSeller

And then buy an 8GB kit off Newegg
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145281&cm_re=corsair_8GB_DDR3_SODIMM-_-20-145-281-_-Product

Or better yet, wait a month for the newer W520 to be available and order that.

Walmart security cameras??

Pam

Stealing from walmart?
Okay...so I got caught stealing a 3 dollar item from walmart today. I know it's wrong, and I feel bad. I felt bad doing it, not just from getting caught. I paid for everything else, but couldn't afford that item. However, I have done the same thing many times before, bought some stuff, and stolen smaller items that I couldn't afford. They asked me if I had ever done it before, and I told them no. The truth was that I had. I feel terrible. I'm almost glad this happened because it woke me up. But could they go back a few weeks and months and see me stealing then? Or do they pretty much not go back and look at old tapes to find people stealing?
13 minutes ago - 4 days left to answer.
Additional Details
I feel terrible, and I am aware of prices rising because of theft. I don't mean in the future - I will NEVER steal again. I mean would they look for me in past tapes?

Answer
No. they do not have the time to go back and review every tape for the past weeks to find one shoplifter. My son in law was a Wal Mart manager for years and everything from lawn mowers to TV's have been taken out of there. I do hope you have learned from this. It does contribute to higher prices for the rest of us and Wal Mart can get very nasty about this is they have to.

What about HD Surveillance?

Patrick

would having security cameras in HD help catch more criminals? It seems like every video I see on the news with security cameras is blurry and you can't make anything out of the faces. Do the current security cameras actually work very well?

Answer
A security system is only as good as the camera, and you get what you pay for. Most HD cameras run around $400 each, so a major chain store or bank is looking at hundreds of thousands and even millions of dollars in cameras to cover all their businesses. As a result, they buy cheaper cameras, and hope to "catch them in the act"

DIY security camera--help?

evian.H2O

I would like to build a cheap DIY security camera. there has been an increase in crime (vehicle break-ins, etc.) in the past few weeks in my neighborhood. I want build a security camera system to keep watch over my truck at night. I would like it to have the following features:
---motion detection or manual start (motion detection would be the ideal case but manual start seems to be alot simpler and cheaper)
---long record time (bare minimum of 5 hours)
---good quality in low light setting
---store on to a usb flashdrive or sd card (mainly just want to store and/or watch the videos if necessary)
---relatively small if possible

the cheaper and simpler the better. I dont necessarily have a budget but would like to keep it halfway cheap. any tips, comments, videos, links would be greatly appreciated! thanks to all!
Hey guys thanks a lot for your input! it is greatly appreciated! i think i am going to go the webcam route. but the location i will be putting the camera will be about 100 or so yards from my computer. i looked into wireless transmitter/recievers but the good sets were pretty expensive. i also looked into wireless webcams but idk if they will reach that distance? maybe with a patch antenna of some sort? and is there any possible way to interface the webcam to store its videos to a usb flash drive or sd card? thanks again guys i really appreciate it!

Answer
A lot of people, including myself, use HD webcams. Good ones can be found for less than a hundred bucks, and decent ones near 50 dollars. You can purchase a USB extension cable for about 30 dollars and run the camera from your computer to the location you want it. There's a program called Dorgem that will allow you to save images from the camera to your hard drive. You can set it up for motion detection, or to capture images at a certain duration. The pictures are in a folder on your hard drive, so you can transfer them if needed. You can also use any movie making software to run the pictures in succession like a time-lapse movie. Or you can also use My Webcam Broadcaster. It's a free online webcam streaming service that you can access your webcam from anywhere there's an internet connection. There's even an app for that:)

Wireless Security Camera System?

I am looking into setting up one wireless security camera (preferably with night vision) in the front of my house. I might even put one in the back, but we'll see. I am really confused though. There are so many different types and so many mixed reviews.

Ultimately I will need to purchase a DVR system and a camera. But which one? I'd like it to record continuously and reset every few days. This way if something does happen, I can simply check the DVR.

It looks like Q-See is the best bet, but I don't know. What do you think?

The DVRs will work on various voltages, so the only problem may be changing the plug.
The mini cams are brilliant, especially the ultra low light ones, which can see in near total darkness.
There is nothing wrong with the low priced DVRs!!, but get the highest Gb you can, so you can record for a longer period. I have mine on 24/7, then when it's full, it just overwrites it.
There are also wireless send & receivers.
It's a DIY dream shop.
And no, I don't work there!!! :)

What IP Camera you suggest is the best choice for low light conditionsï¼?

How do I setup my internet Security Camera?

drunkenold

I have an Internet Security Camera that only connects to an Ethernet cable and a powercord. I have it set up through my router, (it gives it IP 192.168.1.3) I can access this camera from within my network; but how can I access this from the Internet? That 192. number obviously isn't it's real IP number it's what the router gives it. So what do I do?

Answer
First you will need to determine what port number the camera is configured to use for access. Not knowing your make of the camera I can only speculate what features are available. If it has a built in web engine then you will need to go into the settings and find the port # ie:8000, 8080 etc etc. In your router you will need to set the port forwarding to the camera's IP address and that port number. Some camera clients use more than one port for other features so include those in your forwarding if you are planning to use the camera's software and not a web browser. Lastly it is likely you have a dynamic ip address meaning that your isp issues your IP address on a lease...some for hours, days others for months and the IP could and most likely change. If you want to always check your IP address before you go (hopefully it won't change while ur out) then disregard the following and you are done. However you can go to some of the available dns service sites like http://www.dyndns.com/services/dns/dyndns/
which allows you to install software that automatically updates your ip address to a free domain name. So when you are out you would type in the domain name vs the ip. ie: theallseeingeye.dyndns.org which would resolve to your external ip address (you can replace the dyndns.org from a list they have available) I have several dlinks that already have dynamic dns options available so check your settings. Hope this helps. Good Luck

Cheap security camera setup?

I need something real cheap, its for outside. I'm fine with using a webcam if that'll work

I've had to deal with police, and want to know from inside if someone is outside.

PC or Mac?????????????????????????????

Zach

ok so ive used to have a mac about 4 years ago it sucked ass and none of the programs worked so right now i have a PC and its alright i guess it does what it is supposed to my question is Mac has been getting alot of hype recently and i want to know why im getting a new computer soon so i want to know why is the mac so good now thanks

Answer
PC for the following...

PC=Variety of specs, options, quality, prices, vendors, support
Mac=One vendor, limited options, still more expensive. Look below for more information..

Today, Macs use a subset of PC hardware. Why spend extra to get the same CPU chips, graphics cards and OS X isn't as secure as you think..

Don't believe the lies that Macs are better than PCs at graphics/animation.. Dreamworks Animation http://www.dreamworksanimation.com/ under studio click on Technology of Animation, an independent film maker I know uses PCs, a graphic artist I used to know uses PCs also.

A number of PCs can also run OS X (Mac OS) http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=os+x+on+pc&btnG=Google+Search&aq=0&oq=os+x+on+ as well just that Apple makes it illegal in order to get Market share.. The reason why Mac can run native Windows is because it is using a subset of PC hardware,

If you decide to buy a Mac for running Windows, you will still have to get the same virus/spyware protection, and run into the same issues as a regular PC.

Now is a Mac worth buying for OS X?

I say: NO... for the following reasons...

QUALITY/PROBLEMS
Contrary to belief, Macs are not better quality. Apple also has been changing suppliers to try to "lower the price" and thus lowering quality. Even with the lower prices, Macs still cost more, they spend a higher percent of budget trying to make it look pretty, and marketing.

Sample of problems: Overheating Macbooks, OS X- not responding to keyboard, some units with 16bit screens, etc. Apple statistics are misleading since Mac users with problem machines are more likely to go out and buy a new computer than PC users. Apple is lowering prices which means you can expect lower quality than in the past. Apple had switched the manufacturers producing parts. OS X also has problems slowing down.

Repairs are more expensive than PCs since the IMac, Mac Mini are compact units, and Apple charges a premium for their services. Some repairs can be done by another repair service but the compact design of the computer causes problems.
With an IMac, if the problem is with the monitor, the whole computer would have to be brought in.
IMac and Mac mini lack expansion.

VIRUSES
Mac OS X has viruses (and significantly on the rise), a friend of mine has a virused Mac. As more users use Macs, more viruses will come out for it. Especially when users think "they are safe".

SECURITY
Mac OS X was hacked in 2006 less than 30 minutes, and within 2 minutes in a contest in 2008, and within 10 seconds in 2009. In 2008, Linux and Vista were not hacked until another day when restrictions were lowered. Vista was next, and then Linux. In 2009 Windows 7 fell shortly after the Mac but Linux was unscathed.
Macs are standardized with Cameras, if your Mac gets hacked, the hacker can turn on your camera with more ease.
Please Note: All OS's have vulnerabilities.

PLEASE NOTE: I compare Apple Mac's vs Dells best deal. If you really want an all-in one the Dell all-in-one has more ram, wireless keyboard and mouse and equivalent to $400 for free making the Imac still more expensive when you matching specs. Personally I don't think the All-in-Ones are a good choice, and consider them overpriced, lack expandability and repairs both more expensive and require the entire computer.

PS: Apple knows that they need to make Macintosh look different than PC so all Macs except the Mac Pro will not have a tower option. Apple's low end lacks expandability but it makes the Mac "look different", if Mac had a tower for low-end, more people would realize the similarities between the two.

Dell: ($700)
CPU: 2.33 GHZ Dell Inspiron QUAD (4 Processor) CORE

The Mac Mini since it has no monitor, keyboard, mouse, very skimpy on options and setup and is not the best deal... The IMac is better price than the Mac Mini.

IMac ($1300)
CPU: 2.4 GHZ DUAL (2 Processor) CORE (SLOWER CPU)
