How to install security cameras and ethernet in new home?

06Si

I am having a brand new house built, in the next couple of weeks it will be at the point where I need to install my own ethernet and security cameras before drywall goes up as the builders do not do this themselves. If anyone has any tips of how to online it will be much appreciated. I want ethernet in every room and 4 cameras out doors.

Answer
First off, plan. Walk the layout carefully and a paper map that you can mark up may be helpful as well. You can make a photocopy of a floor plan or hand draw this, it doesn't need to be exact, but you need a really good idea of where you are putting things.
Before you do anything else plan where your router will go. This is the most important thing to plan for because once the dry wall is up you will not be able to change your mind on it. Make sure to plan for any kind of ISP you may choose to have in the future, so both cable and telephone will need to be wired into this room where the router will be. That way if you decide to change ISP's they can install the modem in that same room. Trust me, nothing is worse than having your Ethernet wiring job perfect only to find out that it is then useless because you can't put the modem in the room designed for the router.
Make sure when you layout where the cables will go that they will be protected. None should be exposed to extreme heat or cold and you especially want to make sure they will not be accessible to small animals that may get under the house or into the attic. Small critters love to chew cables, they will destroy your Ethernet very fast and all will be for naught.
Install your patch panel. All of your Ethernet cables will need to run to a patch panel if you want this to look clean. I do not recommend putting the panel built into the wall, instead plan to have it in a place where you can quickly remove it from the wall so you can re-punch any runs that need it in the future.
Run the cables. Run each cable then from the patch panel to their destination making sure to leave slack at both ends, usually between 6 to 9 inches of slack on each end is plenty to then work with it. Do not punch down anything yet. Make sure when running the cable that it is out of the way of where the drywall will be installed and that you do not kink or crimp anywhere, especially around corners. A rule of thumb is that the Ethernet cable should never bend more than if you were to wrap it around your hand. That is about the tightest corner you want to make it do safely.
Attach the Ethernet cable up and out of the way using a staple gun with special wiring staples (they are wider and rounded so they don't kink the cable but you still need to be cautious when putting them in, don't puncture the cable at all) or you can use some nails hammered in on each side of the cable and bent over to hold them in place. the second method is safer but more time consuming.
When planning and running the cables run at least 1 spare to each outlet. This will help you out later if you make a mistake or need to replace one cable. You may also want to run a fish line, no not fishing line, a fish line. It can really be just about any durable string you can use to pull a cable through the wall after the drywall is in place in case you need to replace one cable.
Make sure to mark each cable on both ends. Come up with a system that works for you, I usually just number them then mark those numbers on my map. Some people designate the room the cable goes to a letter and the outlet gets a number then the port on that outlet gets a number as well so those look like: A-3-1 (just an example). By marking them all on both ends you can trace each wire out when you are ready to punch them down and know which port goes where.
Once they are all run, you have slack, you are positive they are out of the way for the dry wall to go up, just wait for the house to be finished. When it is done punch down your cables at the patch panel, punch down your ports for each outlet (don't put ports on the spare cables just leave them in the wall just for emergencies). Put your face plates up then you will need your modem plugged into your router, your router will need to plug into a switch (because you will probably need a lot more ports than a router will give you) then the switch will need to connect to your patch panel.
Once that is all connected and ready to go you will need to go around and test your ports. You may want an Ethernet tester for this to verify you have the correct pin out. I would recommend doing a search online for the pin out config.
For the security camera's I would recommend using WiFi capable cameras for outside and Ethernet connected ones for inside. Or go WiFi with all of them. Just make sure you have an electrician install a weatherproof/tamper-proof power outlet near where you want them and you are good.

I live in an apartment building where each apartment is individually owned. Video surveillance cameras were recently installed to monitor the halls and public spaces. The feed is available on the internet (with login) to all apartment owners. Is this legal?

Answer
I would think it is because it's not violating private space and I'm sure that the apartment owners would just like to let you see like what's going on. I would love to have something like that in my condos haha

Can I Make a TIVO into a Security Camera DVR?

Leo John

So I have this old working Tivo Series 2 DT DVR. And I also have a security camera. Can I hook it up to my security camera and record footage?

Thanks

Answer
Yes you can. However, the Tivo will not let you continuously record more than 30 minutes of "past" recording. You can program it to record a fixed amount of time (for example 8 hours) every day.
However, you will need to manually enter the recording for each day.

The other answer is wrong. You do not need to subscribe to the Tivo service to do this.

Can I hook up a security camera to a Verizon DVR box?

Sue C

I see you can buy a DVR box to hook up with the video camera. But if you already have a DVR box from Verizon can you just use that? Or does the DVR box have to be specifically for the security camera?

Answer
The DVR has to be a box that has a video input that can record.

The Verizon box has no such inputs; it records only form its digital cable/IPTV input.

We have installed security cameras at one location in our business, and have decided it is best to monitor the feeds from a different location. Both sites have high speed internet via cable bodem, and the camera uses a standard RCA video jack. Is there a simple hardware and software solution to transmit the feed to be viewed on a PC screen at our other location? I have looked at Slingbox, but think that may be overkill for our situation. Any help would be appreciated.

Answer
Actually, all you need is a good DVR with internet connection.

How to set up a security camera and view it through the internet?

Bobby Chan

Hi so we have a security camera that allows up to view our property. Does anyone have any step by step instructions on how to set up the camera on a webpage or something through the internet so i am able to view the camera when i am not at home?
thanks.

Answer
One easy solution would be to purchase something like a Linksys internet video camera (linked below) that you can find in many stores or online and runs about $90-$100. Give it power, plug it into your router, and you can access the feed when not at home.

There are other similar products on the market.

If your goal is to use an existing webcam setup, that would be a little more complicated.

By this, I mean aside from needing to remove the Laptop, I myself will normally be carrying a camera, Nintendo DS, and their respective chargers and extra batteries along. Would i need to take out EVERY electronic and its charger? or just remove the Laptop from the bag and leave everything else?

Answer
There are 3 things that you must remove:
- laptop (not the charger, not the portable hard drive, not the game boy, not the mp3 player, not the digital camera, not the video camera - just the laptop)
- CPAP machines (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure - for treatment of sleep apnea)
- The 1 qt zip lock bag in to which you have placed your liquid, gel and paste items

If the screeners see anything in the x-ray image of the bag that they want to take a closer look at, they will open it up to look.

What is the best computer for video editing, but also same gaming?

I want to buy a computer that will be primarily used for video editing with Adobe Creative Suite 4 Production Premium. However, I also enjoy gaming. I want it to have tons of memory (really really fast performance) and hard-drive (at least 600 GB hard drive). What computer would be best for me and with what specs? Mac or PC? Desktop or Laptop? etc..... thanks for any info you can provide!

Answer
PC Desktop.. More performance for your money, more support and the following...

PC=Variety of specs, options, quality, prices, vendors, support
Mac=One vendor, limited options, still more expensive. Look below for more information..

Today, Macs use a subset of PC hardware. Why spend extra to get the same CPU chips, graphics cards and OS X isn't as secure as you think..

Don't believe the lies that Macs are better than PCs at graphics/animation.. Dreamworks Animation http://www.dreamworksanimation.com/ under studio click on Technology of Animation, an independent film maker I know uses PCs, a graphic artist I used to know uses PCs also.

A number of PCs can also run OS X (Mac OS) http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=os+x+on+pc&btnG=Google+Search&aq=0&oq=os+x+on+ as well just that Apple makes it illegal in order to get Market share.. The reason why Mac can run native Windows is because it is using a subset of PC hardware,

If you decide to buy a Mac for running Windows, you will still have to get the same virus/spyware protection, and run into the same issues as a regular PC.

Now is a Mac worth buying for OS X?

I say: NO... for the following reasons...

ADVANTAGES WINDOWS :
Aprox 90% of the market is Windows and most PCs have windows already pre-installed.
1) Some websites require Internet Explorer, to run IE on Mac you really get ies4osx which is the Windows version of IE running really buggy and illegal if you don't have a legitimate copy of Windows.
2) Supports devices (printers and other things you hook into the computer).
3) More business software/games
4) Want the dock on OS X (Mac)? google/yahoo rocketdock, objectdoc.
5) Used by businesses.

ADVANTAGES LINUX :
1) FREE (most versions are)
2) Install software by eitjher 1) Synaptic Package Manager, 2) Add/Remove 3) Opening a .deb or .rpm file (depending on distribution)
2) Like the Mac OS X effects? go yahoo/google COMPIZ FUSION which can do any cool effect a Mac can do and many ore....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N3gkX9HDfEE (there is no flickering when you use it like on the video, not sure why the person has the flicker)
3) Mac OS X Doc? google/yahoo Avant Window Navigator.Cairo Dock, http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x3rf5q_cairo-dock-mac-os-x-leopard-dock-on_tech
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p0hzi22g2DE
4) It is FASTERr/MORE SECURE to surf on the internet
5) Some Windows programs work with Wnehq/Crossover (also avail on Mac, but why pay $$$)

SECURITY
Mac OS X was hacked in 2006 less than 30 minutes, and within 2 minutes in a contest in 2008, and within 10 seconds in 2009. In 2008, Linux and Vista were not hacked until another day when restrictions were lowered. Vista was next, and then Linux. In 2009 Windows 7 fell shortly after the Mac but Linux was unscathed.
Macs are standardized with Cameras, if your Mac gets hacked, the hacker can turn on your camera with more ease.
Please Note: All OS's have vulnerabilities.

VIRUSES
Mac OS X has viruses (and significantly on the rise), a friend of mine has a virused Mac. As more users use Macs, more viruses will come out for it. Especially when users think "they are safe".

QUALITY/PROBLEMS
Contrary to belief, Macs are not better quality. Apple also has been changing suppliers to try to "lower the price" and thus lowering quality. Even with the lower prices, Macs still cost more, they spend a higher percent of budget trying to make it look pretty, and marketing.

Sample of problems: Overheating Macbooks, OS X- not responding to keyboard, some units with 16bit screens, etc. Apple statistics are misleading since Mac users with problem machines are more likely to go out and buy a new computer than PC users. Apple is lowering prices which means you can expect lower quality than in the past. Apple had switched the manufacturers producing parts. OS X also has problems slowing down.

Repairs are more expensive than PCs since the IMac, Mac Mini are compact units, and Apple charges a premium for their services. Some repairs can be done by another repair service but the compact design of the computer causes problems.
With an IMac, if the problem is with the monitor, the whole computer would have to be brought in.
IMac and Mac mini lack expansion.

PRICE
A similar equipped PC is much cheaper to purchase than Mac. Lets use Dell (but you can compare with another PC Brand if you like)

**(LAPTOP)
Dell Inspiron Laptop $849 dropped to $799
15" Screen
CPU: (upgrade to) 2.1GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Graphics: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100

**(DESKTOP)

PLEASE NOTE: I compare Apple Mac's vs Dells best deal. If you really want an all-in one the Dell all-in-one has more ram, wireless keyboard and mouse and equivalent to $400 for free making the Imac still more expensive when you matching specs. Personally I don't think the All-in-Ones are a good choice, and consider them overpriced, lack expandability and repairs both more expensive and require the entire computer.

PS: Apple knows that they need to make Macintosh look different than PC so all Macs except the Mac Pro will not have a tower option. Apple's low end lacks expandability but it makes the Mac "look different", if Mac had a tower for low-end, more people would realize the similarities between the two.

Dell: (At The Moment) Specs Below costs $809
CPU: 2.4 GHZ Dell Inspiron QUAD (4 Processor) CORE
SCREEN: 20inch Screen
MEMORY: 3GB Ram
HARD DRIVE: 500 GB hard Drive
OPTICAL DRIVE: 16x DVD/CD Read/Writer
GRAPHICS: (upgrade to ) ATI Radeon HD 2400 PRO 128MB

The Mac Mini since it has no monitor, keyboard, mouse, very skimpy on options and setup and is not the best deal... The IMac is better price than the Mac Mini.

IMac ($1400)
CPU: 2.4 GHZ DUAL (2 Processor) CORE (SLOWER CPU)
SCREEN: 20inch Screen
MEMORY: (upgrade to) 2GB Ram (LESS RAM)

I've heard-of a security camera system that I could watch my home from a laptop while at work. What company should I refer to get this setup, and will any laptop work?

Answer
Hello

Not all DVRs are created equal, in fact there are many options that offer varying performance much like the automobile industry. In the world of DVRs you can find the equivalent of a $10,000 Kia and a $350,000 Ferrari and everything in between. Both have 4 wheels and windshield but that where the similarities end, itâs under the hood that counts. Just like any other consumer electronic in the end you get what you pay for.

I suggest you buy a PC based DVR has they have more processing power and normally have a much smaller file size and offer more features then Standalone DVR's. I know many people buy a cheap standalone DVR, only to upgrade to a PC based in 6 months especially when they are using it to manage a store remotely. Also PC based allows you to record up to 64 cameras where a standalone will have a limit of 16.

Many people have the misconception that a PC-Based DVR is simply an off-the-shelf PC with video capture (encoder) cards, display (decoder) cards and some generic OEM software. A true DVR requires years of research and development to facilitate the seamless integration of both the hardware and software. DVRs are highly complex systems that must run 24/7, processing millions of images per day. This makes consumer-level hardware inadequate for DVRs which is why Ascendent uses custom-built PCs with performance-level hardware.

My personal favorite DVR is Ascendent X4 series: Ascendentâs Tri-Fusion Hybrid Platform allows for the creation of a true hybrid surveillance system by utilizing the advantages of Analog, Megapixel, and IP technologies for unparalleled customization and expandability. I am working on government projects and use Ascendent cameras and DVR because the offer superior performance and cost less then comparable brands like bosh, Honeywell and pelco.

The X4 also uses the latest H.264/SVC codec offer video substantially better quality,. While its file size sizes is 30% smaller than MPEG-4, 60% smaller than MPEG-2, and exponentially smaller than MJPEG.

File size is crucial to streaming because most DVRâs on the market record at real time performance (30FPS per channel) so on a 4CH is trying to send 120, 8CH 240, and a 16CH 480 images per second which requires way too much bandwidth even for the most extreme internet connections.

The smaller the files size the more images are able to be sent, and the faster they can be processed improving both FPS and speed. File size is the heart of any DVR and goes far beyond just its streaming capabilities, as it also determines the recording storage time, how much you can back up at once, how fast it renders and searches video. The file size of a DVR impacts the performance of the DVR in just about every aspect from speed to longevity and is often the most important spec of any DVR.

If you are buying a DVR and streaming is a high priority I suggest you ask for a demo and connect to the DVR to make sure it is able to stream fast enough for your needs. Most DVRs say they have remote viewing but it is often too slow and laggy to be of any use especially if it is a standalone. Some good DVR brands that I recommend are Bosch, Pelco, Honeywell and Ascendent. These brands are what security professionals use, Q-see, Swan and Lorex are only used in residential applications because they are sold by Tiger Direct, Spytown, Newegg, Sams Club, Costco and other retail outlets but are not used by any security professionals also their tech support rarely speaks English as their first language...

These brand manufacturers also have a complete line of CCTV cameras for any application from residential to military.

A good security camera system that i can view with my ipad wifi?

I need to hook up an outdoor security camera system but one that is also wireless. I would need to view it on my ipad as I am going away on vacation so something that doesnt need recharging would be the best

Answer
Hello

Here is a DVR that will work perfectly for you.

http://www.ascendentgroup.com/x4s.htm

Most DVR's and cameras don't have the ability to view from your i-phone, and you cant just download generic software all DVR's and cameras uses different encryption , software, and compression so you cant use another companies software to view another manufactures DVR.

You want a DVR that has an app specifically designed to work with it like the one I am suggesting below.

What you want is a DVR a DVR converts analog cameras and as well as storing images on site allows you to distribute video over LAN and WAN networks. (internet and network) this way you have both on site storage and recording at your house.

A good Analog DVR will do what you are looking for and not only display them but record them as well they will also allow you to view them over the internet from a Iphone or laptop.

X4S Remote Accessibility
View all your cameras instantly and remotely, and configure the DVR through internet using eitherbusiness in real time from anywhere in the world. MAC or PC platforms (smart phones too). This allows you to manage your

Many people have a misconception that IP has Superior scalability then Analog but with the advancements with DVR's this simply isn't true, you cn do up to 16,000 cameras each camera could even be from a different DVR and a different site.

And when you are using the internet to connect multiple sites together analog transmits over the internet faster with less latency using less bandwidth allowing you not only to view and monitor a situation real time but also effective control PTZ cameras.

What is the Advantage of IP?
Many of the so called advantages of IP simply don't hold water in the real world, IP is mainly Hype and marketing and outside of a few niche applications such as 1 or 2 camera installs, where MP cameras are needed or large scale wireless projects which represent about 2% of the total CCTV market, IP has very few advantages compared to analog based on performance, cost and reliability. (yet all companies touting IP will often use MP cameras to demonstrate the advantages of IP)

IP video is more about marketing then it is about performance as larger companies like Bosch pelco Honeywell axis can change for both hardware and software and once you use there cameras you have to keep using there cameras unlike analog.

Also IP sounds great, plug and play, Better image quality, use existing infrastructure, who wouldnât want that unfortunately this is often not the case.

IP cameras are based on CMOS
Analog cameras are based on CCD (usually)

A CMOS sensor is constructed using a array of pixels, but unlike CCDâs CMOS do not have a capacitor to store the charge for each pixel. The rows of pixels are activated sequentially rather then individually

In short unless you have perfect lighting a good CCD camera will outperform an equivalent CMOS camera.

File Size:
The smaller the files size the more images that are able to be sent and the faster they can be processed improving both FPS and speed. File size is the heart of any DVR and goes far beyond just its streaming capabilities as it also determines the recoding storage time, how much you can back up at once, how fast it renders and searches video.

IP cameras have up to a 5X larger file size then analog cameras. (at same resolution) I have seen MP cameras that on 2MP resolution are over 300X (%3000) larger then our X3 DVR on a CIF image. This is an extreme case but generally speaking IP cameras have a much larger file size.

Most routers and switches are not designed to handle IP cameras they have enough bandwidth but they are not able to process the amounts of commands. (9 IP cameras 30FP is 230 instructions per second) standard routers have enough bandwidth (up to 1GB) but cant handle the amount of tasks (instructions) so frames get dropped latency is introduced and the effectiveness of other devices such as POS, printers and dats storage can be affected and compromised.

Donât get me wrong there are some brutal analog cameras and DVR out there but If you see a good D1 resolution image such as Ascendents Hardware compressed you will not be so quick to join the IP bandwagon.

IP is a young and emerging technology and I have no doubt that in the future it will outperform analog cameras but its not a mature technology yet. Once we start to get standard IP platforms, get rid of license feesâ and existing networks have larger bandwidths then IP video will be a good solution, but until then analog is the way to go.

Make sure you get good cameras as well, Ascendent has the best IR outdoor cameras on the market and are about %50 less then Bosch while offering triple the distance.

Where can I find a hidden/covert outdoor security camera?

Judy

I've been searching the net trying to find the perfect hidden camera to monitor the front of my house. There's been burglaries in the neighborhood and just the other day some bastard busted up my car window and stole my speakers and amp.

Just so I can have some piece of mind, I'd like to look into a security/surveilance camera. I want something that can be hidden and doesn't look like a camera. I'd love to find something I could put in a potted plant out front, or something like that. The best thing I've found so far is a Flood Light that's a Hidden Camera, but it's non-functional and I have to have some kind of lighting in my driveway so that's not practical for me.

Any ideas?

Answer
There are a lot of wireless/nanny cameras out on the market now, but you are probably going to need a night time/low light camera if lighting is not practical in your driveway. Then you will also need to decide how you want to store your video either on a PC or VCR.

The other thing to consider with wireless cameras would be picture quality, so a wired camera might be a better option for you if there is any wireless interference. smarthome.com has a variety of brands but aer usually more expensive. x10 that has a pretty cheap wired camera that is black and white which performs better at night and it plugs right into a vcr

A DVR card, or digital video recorder card, is an electronic device that is installed inside a computer to record video in digital format. Installing a DVR card is an alternative to buying more expensive security systems. Using a DVR card involves plugging the card into a home computer, connecting a security camera to the DVR card, and installing the DVR interface program in the computer,I need to collect solutions of building dvr card for security camera?

Answer
Locate the spots where you want to mount the security cameras.Run the coaxial cable from the camera to the computer that you will use to view the security camera.Open the cover of your computer system unit, or CPU. Locate a vacant PCI slot on the motherboard inside the computer CPU. Using a pair of pliers, remove the knockdown metal plate on the CPU chassis at the end of the PCI slot.Plug the DVR card onto the vacant PCI slot. Screw the metal tab at the end of the card to the computer chassis, using the screw supplied with the card. Plug the coaxial cable to any of the exposed dvr card at the rear of the computer.Plug the power supply cable to the nearest 120-volt wall receptacle. Turn on the computer.Open the DVR software program to view the program interface. View the camera image following the procedures instructed in the program.

What is the point of outdoor home security cameras?

Kayla

I desperately need security cameras because I don't feel save at my neighborhood but

there is this bunch of kids of questionable characters hanging next door and

how do I know that they won't use some stick or rocks to knock down my outdoor security camera?

What about wireless camera? How do I replace batteries? Should I use landwire instead?

Answer
You need to get one of these:
http://www.closeoutcctv.com/SearchResults.asp?Cat=32

They are vandall proof. The cases are hard and can withstand a hammer. Wireless cameras are cool, but aren't worth the money.

These guys have a pretty good price too. Also, I called, cause I found one camera with a better price, and they beat it for me. The thing you'll need to know is that you can't just buy a security camera, you'll need to buy a DVR or recording device that you can plug them into.

But warning... Mac OS X is not as secure as you think

Surveillance Motion Detection Software?

PRB

Is there a software that I can use that has motion detection for web came and sends me an alert or report by email?

Answer
The free, Easy Method: webcam motion detector software
Webcam Motion Detector is designed for motion detection and webcam monitoring. It features video surveillance with multiple IP cameras and video capture devices. For each video frame, if motion is detected, the Alarm event occurs, that returns a global motion ratio, depending of the number of cells in which motion has been detected, and the level of motion in each cell. A sensitivity grid is applied on video frames. You can adjust the sensitivity of the detection, and mask out areas of the camera view to avoid false alarms. When the camera captures video frames in a dark environment, it is possible that the electrical background noise of the CCD video cell creates fake motion detection events. It is possible to reduce the sensitivity of to the video noise by enabling the Reduce Video Noise option. When an alarm condition is detected, the program can sound an audible alarm, or send you an email with a photo. Automatically capture photos, or record video in compressed files. Webcam Motion Detector includes an advanced player that allows playing video clips, capturing video frames, and performing frame overlay. Each camera has its own individual monitoring and recording settings.
download site : http://download.cnet.com/Webcam-Motion-Detector/3000-2348_4-75609375.html

The Cheap, Easy Method: iCam

Previously mentioned iCam is undoubtedly the simplest of the bunch, and at only $5, it's a steal for how many features it gives you. Set up iCam with any webcam and you can view an ongoing stream from your iPhone, Android phone, or even a web browser. It can also send a push notification to your phone whenever it detects motion, and take a number of quick snapshots so you can see what was moving around.

The best part about iCam is that it couldn't be simpler to set up. You just install the iCamSource app on your Windows PC or Mac, download the app to your iPhone or Android device, and select your camera from iCamSource's menu. Give it a username and password (so no one but you can access it), edit the motion detection sensitivity if need be, and get on with your day. You can even set up multiple cameras if you have a number of different areas to monitor. Check out the video above for a demonstration on how it works, and see our previous tutorial on iCam for more info on setting it up.

The More Expensive, Bells & Whistles Method: WebcamXP
The only real downside of iCam is that you can't record and save video. You can watch it live, but if you see that someone's entered your home, you can only save snapshots of it on your phone. If you want a few more features (like saving video, uploading saved video to the web, or only monitoring certain parts of the frame for motion), WebcamXP is the most user-friendly program we tested. The basics are pretty easy to set upâjust start up the program, right-click in the video frame to choose your webcam, and tell it to alert you via the Security tab. You can also set up more complex schedules, telling it when to record, when to monitor for motion, and when to upload videos to the web.

The main downsides to WebcamXP are its price ($60 for single-camera use), its Windows-only availability, and the few extra steps it takes to forward the necessary ports and set up DHCP reservations. You don't need to do any of that in iCam, but if you want to view WebcamXP's stream from the internet, you'll need to fiddle with a few router settings. Neither is especially hard to do, it's just an annoyance you have to deal with when you first set it up. For more information on setting up and using WebcamXP, check out its very thorough documentation.

Note that WebcamXP does have a free version, but it doesn't offer the ability to alert you when motion's detected, making iCam a better choice than WebcamXP Free. Grab the Pro version if you want the full set of features; otherwise, iCam's probably fine.

How can I connect both a security camera and the satellite dish to my TV ?

So I have this ordinary security camera that connects via BNC (antenna / coaxial cable) to a TV and the TV just tunes to the camera frequency like it would to a regular channel - I tuned the camera on channel 0 for quick access. Sounds simple so far, I have good image quality from the camera, but then I ran into a big problem : I also need to watch my regular TV channels on that TV while the camera is connected, so this is my question : how do I connect both the camera input and the satellite dish to the TV at once ? I know you'll right away suggest a switch box, but that's not what I'm looking for, because that means getting up and manually switching the box every time I want to alternate between the camera and the satellite. Something like a signal merger, or anything that would take 2 sources and output them into one, so I could tune in both the camera and the channels with the ease of my remote, without having to flick a switch. Does such thing even exist at a reasonable price ? In shorts : 2 signal sources, same TV, can it be done ?

i want a computer thats not to expensive but that can still run world of warcraft fine what kind of computer(mac or pc) would that be?

Answer
PC..

2) Supports more devices (printers and other things you hook into the computer).
3) More business software/games
4) Want the dock on OS X (Mac)? google/yahoo rocketdock, objectdoc.
5) Used by businesses.

ADVANTAGES LINUX :
1) FREE (most versions are)
2) Install software by either 1) Synaptic Package Manager, 2) Add/Remove 3) Opening a .deb or .rpm file (depending on distribution)
2) Like the Mac OS X effects? go yahoo/google COMPIZ FUSION which can do any cool effect a Mac can do and many ore....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N3gkX9HDfEE (there is no flickering when you use it like on the video, not sure why the person has the flicker)
3) Mac OS X Doc? google/yahoo Avant Window Navigator.Cairo Dock, http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x3rf5q_cairo-dock-mac-os-x-leopard-dock-on_tech
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p0hzi22g2DE
4) It is FASTER/MORE SECURE to surf on the internet
5) Some Windows programs work with Wnehq/Crossover (also avail on Mac, but why pay $$$)

Sample of problems: Deleting your Data (Snow Leopard), Overheating Macbooks, OS X- not responding to keyboard, some units with 16bit screens, etc.

The Mac Mini since it has no monitor, keyboard, mouse, very skimpy on options and setup and is not the best deal... The IMac is better price than the Mac Mini.

Vonnic are really nice, you can pick them up with free shipping at ATD Computers.

The above is a $299 kit that comes with 4 cameras and a dvr, you will just need a hard drive to record to. The IR is well too, check out a demo at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tuVDBn3dzcY

I have been looking... I know i can get a system at SAM'S for 500 dollars but it only has 4 cameras... i haven't found one that is reasonable that may have 8+ cameras without paying thousands... I am visually impaired and we've been having some "snoopers" lately and want to beef up the security around the house (visual security with taping capabilities)... if you know of something good AND inexpensive, please tell me...

Answer
Good an inexpesive is a relative term. If you think 500 bucks for a DVR with 4 camera's is too expensive then forget about 8. - Personally, I would never buy the system you are looking at. My customers tend to expect quality and reliability as do I.

Typically speaking, retail camera's, like the type you are looking at, are fairly substandard when compared in quality to those on a professional level.

Your best bet is to go at it with some knowledge of the technology, I wrote an article on the subject awhile back but most of the info still applies. I have pasted some of it here. You can find more information on security related topics on my website at http://www.keepsafesystems.ca

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

The starting point of any C.C.T.V. system is the camera. Simply stated, a camera is a light sensitive device that converts particles of light into electrical impulses, however, there is a vast difference in the quality of cameras available to the consumer. Factors that differentiate the various cameras include whether they are color, black and white, light sensitivity, image resolution and image transfer technology. The consumer must also consider the inherent advantages and disadvantages in each of these different camera technologies and decide which features best fit their individual needs and goals.

In the past, color cameras have been both very expensive and lack-luster in their image performance, when compared to black and white cameras. New technology is now bringing the innovative technologies closer together in both the price and performance scale. The current differences between the two technologies are almost entirely limited to light sensitivity and light reactivity.

Light sensitivity is measured in LUX. The lower the LUX rating, the higher the sensitivity to light. It is important to keep in mind that even the best-rated cameras are limited by the technology of the day, as well as the visibility conditions present at the time of the surveillance. Although great advancements in low light surveillance continue to be ongoing, the image quality in a low light situation will rarely be up to the standards of daylight surveillance.

Color cameras, although much more appealing on the outside when compared to their black and white counterparts, generally offer less low light sensitivity than a black and white camera. The other advantage of black and white cameras over color cameras is its ability to "see" infrared light, which is invisible to the human eye. You can test this by aiming a standard television remote at a black and white camera while watching the monitor, the flashes you see are bursts of infrared light. The advantage of this becomes apparent in the ability to light up a dark area with infrared light, thus making images visible in almost pure darkness. With the color camera the area will appear unlit, however, to a black and white camera, the area will appear almost like daylight.

The black and white cameraâs reactivity to the invisible light spectrum can also pose a disadvantage in certain applications. Infrared light, although not visible to the human eye, is found in abundance in many everyday situations. For example, when aiming a black and white camera at hot pavement, it will "confuse" the camera resulting in an unbalanced image. Professional grade black and white cameras often incorporate infrared cut-filters. These cut-filters inhibit the infrared light spectrum in turn decreasing the cameras low light sensitivity.

The C.C.T.V. Industry measures image resolution in horizontal lines. The higher the line rating, the clearer the image will appear. With this fact in mind, consider that all electronic components within a C.C.T.V. System, from the camera, to the VCR, to the monitor. These items are all rated in the same way. The actual resolution of the entire system will only be as high as the lowest rated item. For example, if you have a camera rated at 450 lines and a monitor rated at 300 lines, then the result will be 300 visible lines of resolution because the monitor is the lowest rated item in this example. Another point to keep in mind is that the line rating is "Total lines" not lines per inch. Therefore a 12" monitor with a 300 line rating has a far better clarity than a 17" monitor with the same line rating.

The most recent and predominant advances in the C.C.T.V. Industry are the changes in image transfer technology. This technology deals with how the camera takes light particles and converts them into electronic images. Without going into too much detail, image transfer technologies include the following:

Phosphorus Tube Cameras - This camera has low quality, old technology and is susceptible to "image burn". Image burn is when intense light sources will burn themselves into the cameraâs light receptor resulting in the image appearing "memorized". Although this is not a problem with modern day cameras, image burn can still occur on monitors. Tube cameras are also known for poor low light sensitivity.

C.C.D - Also known as "Chip cameras". This camera is the most standard of cameras in the professional realm. C.C.D. cameras do not suffer from the problem of image burn and can incorporate various methods of signal processing, which offers a high level of flexibility to the installer.

CMOS Transfer Cameras - These cameras are very small and continue to get smaller as the technology advances. Although very attractive in their size, CMOS cameras generally do not offer the signal processing, image quality or low light sensitivity of the higher priced C.C.D. camera models. However, the technologies are slowly growing closer together to the point where CMOS cameras may eventually take over the Surveillance Industry.

The Surveillance Industry has continued to move towards the implementation of color cameras that switch to black and white, or even infrared in low light conditions. Although there are some models currently available on the market, the technology is not at a point where it is affordable enough to be manufactured on a large scale.

I heard that there are now fake security cameras in the market. Do they work as well as the real deal?

Answer
Fake security cameras can be used to deter criminals from entering your house or vandalizing your property. Unfortunately, if it doesn't work, you wouldn't be able to record the crime and you wouldn't have any form of evidence that would help you and the authorities identify the culprit.

What's a good, inexpensive home network security camera?

Tyler M

We're looking to set up an inexpensive network security camera in our home. I already have ethernet wiring in most of the house, and a Windows 2003 server that could run any software required to record video. I'm looking for a fairly inexpensive IP-based security camera. Any recommendations ?

Answer
I would recommend that you read up on video surveillance. there are lots of security cameras in the market that can specialize in a variety of things. there are simple ones that simply records videos while there are others that have night vision which is good for dimly lit environment. here's a good site to start on: http://www.video-surveillance-guide.com

best security camera software for windows 7 image

Pioneer

i am planning to change my OS from windows 7 to MAC or Linux but i am quite afraid that if i do it, the drivers in my printer, camera, motherboard, bluetooth, joystick, ect. won't work anymore.
i just wanna confirm, if my doubts are correct that the drivers that i have right now will no longer work if ever i install MAC or Linux.
i also wanna ask your advice with what versions of MAC/Linux should i use? and why?

Answer
linux and mac also have built-in drivers
but some of your drivers have to reinstall them (with Linux and mac versions)

i will recommend you Linux

Linux Advantages (short)
Open Source
its free
less virus

Linux Advantages (full description)

#1 Low cost: You donât need to spend time and money to obtain licenses since Linux and much of its software come with the GNU General Public License. You can start to work immediately without worrying that your software may stop working anytime because the free trial version expires. Additionally, there are large repositories from which you can freely download high quality software for almost any task you can think of.

#2 Stability: Linux doesnât need to be rebooted periodically to maintain performance levels. It doesnât freeze up or slow down over time due to memory leaks and such. Continuous up-times of hundreds of days (up to a year or more) are not uncommon.

#3 Performance: Linux provides persistent high performance on workstations and on networks. It can handle unusually large numbers of users simultaneously, and can make old computers sufficiently responsive to be useful again.

# 4 Network friendliness: Linux was developed by a group of programmers over the Internet and has therefore strong support for network functionality; client and server systems can be easily set up on any computer running Linux. It can perform tasks such as network backups faster and more reliably than alternative systems.

#5 Flexibility: Linux can be used for high performance server applications, desktop applications, and embedded systems. You can save disk space by only installing the components needed for a particular use. You can restrict the use of specific computers by installing for example only selected office applications instead of the whole suite.

#6 Compatibility: It runs all common Unix software packages and can process all common file formats.

#7 Choice: The large number of Linux distributions gives you a choice. Each distribution is developed and supported by a different organization. You can pick the one you like best; the core functionalities are the same; most software runs on most distributions.

#8 Full use of hard disk: Linux continues work well even when the hard disk is almost full.

#9 Multitasking: Linux is designed to do many things at the same time; e.g., a large printing job in the background wonât slow down your other work.

#10 Security: Linux is one of the most secure operating systems. âWallsâ and flexible file access permission systems prevent access by unwanted visitors or viruses. Linux users have to option to select and safely download software, free of charge, from online repositories containing thousands of high quality packages. No purchase transactions requiring credit card numbers or other sensitive personal information are necessary.

#11 Open Source: If you develop software that requires knowledge or modification of the operating system code, Linuxâs source code is at your fingertips. Most Linux applications are Open Source as well.

how do i stop the import program from popping up in windows 7 every time i insert an SD card?

heavenly d

every time i insert my sd card it brings up this import program to import all of my photos onto the pc. how do i stop this from coming up in windows 7?
no not autoplay. sorry i did not specify my pc. its an HP, and HP photosmart always pops up whenever i insert my card. how can i stop it?

Answer
Are you talking about the "AutoPlay"? You need to be more specific. What is the name of the program? Did you install any software that came with your camera? Is that the program that is popping up?

--------------------------

I don't have an HP computer, so, I couldn't really tell you exactly what to do. But, here are a few things you can try:

(1) In the Start Menu, type "Autoplay", and click AutoPlay, which will be one of the search results. Near the bottom of the window that opened, click "Reset all defaults", and click "Save". I have a strong feeling that this will work. Here is what the settings look like on my computer: DVD movie - "Play DVD movie using Windows Media Player"; Software and games, Pictures, Video files, Audio files, and Mixed content - "Ask me every time"; the rest are set to "Choose a default". Yours may have "HP Photosmart" as the option. Insert your SD card, and see if that changes anything.

(2) If that doesn't work, open HP Photosmart and play around with the setting.

(3) Do this whether you have already fixed your problem or not! In the Start Menu, type "msconfig", click on it. Once it opens up, go to "Start up" tab. This allows you to disable programs that start up when Windows starts. Programs that start up when you turn on your computer tends to slow down the start up time. Unchecking them, and clicking OK will prevent them from starting up when Windows starts. Obviously, if you go to "All Programs", and click on HP Photosmart (when you want to) after Windows starts, it'll open up. That's what you really want. You can also uncheck things like, Adobe, Microsoft Office 2010, QuickTIme, Java, etc. If you don't know what they are, Google/Bing it, and see if they are safe to disable. Obviously, you need to leave Windows 7 Operating System, your video card driver, etc. alone, because you want those to start up.

(4) I am hoping option 1 will work out for you, but, if it doesn't, then you can just uninstall the damn program, if you don't use it. If the program came with your printer, then, you can aways just get the drivers without these additional software on the HP website. http://www8.hp.com/ca/en/support.html

(5) If none of the above works, and you really need the software, then, call HP and ask them.

If you are uninstalling software that normally comes with HP, because you don't use those, then, it's a good idea to use "CCleaner", and run a registry and disk clean once you are done. This will get rid of old registry entries and clear the temporary files from you system and keep it running fast.
You can download it from here: http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner Here is a nice YouTube video showing you how to use this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8wqegYPb_Ms

Also, if you are looking for a good, free anti-virus program, I recommend "Microsoft Security Essentials": http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/

How do I go about setting up a computer security camera?

best security camera wireless on Wireless Security Cameras for Your Home and Business - Top ...

RB

Could a novice person be able to set up a computer wired/wireless security camera device?

I want to set up several cameras in my house wirelessly connected to my computer that can record and I can watch if I want to "off site" with another computer.

Can I do it myself or should I have someone come and set it up?

If I can do it myself, can you give me any advise on a book or video on how to do it?

Answer
Wireless system packages may be the way to go here...a bit pricey any way you look @ it.
Google for 'home security/video cams' or similar.
After acquisition & deployment, try this application to tie it all together for remote viewing:
V-CamShow
enables you to watch your favorite web cams as a slide show or a screen saver. You can add as many web cam images to the slideshow as you want, automatically disable or reduce the refresh rate for inactive cams and more. The program comes with a large list of international locations and new web cam locations are added regularly which can be imported into your list. You can also add your own webcam to the list.
Freeware; other webcam utilities in the general heading here also.

Can the frequency from a security camera block my wireless connection?

Olivia

I do not know much about computers. But I just bought a laptop and my dad said they have a router but my brother could never get a connection. He said it might be the frequency from our security camera? Is this possible. I just think my brother installed it wrong.

Answer
It's unlikely, but still possible if the camera uses a wireless connection. Some older model cordless phones can also interfere with wireless internet connections.

On the router, have someone log in to the router's administration panel. Have them change the channel of the wireless signal via the web interface of the router. That may help fix any interference issues, especially if the camera's wireless is on the same frequency as the wireless internet signal.

How do I prevent my security camera from getting blinded by a red laser?

best security camera night image

Joe

I just purchased a night vision security camera to be used outside and it's weakness is that it gets completely blinded by a red laser. How do I avoid this or modify it so that the laser doesn't affect it?

Answer
Best is to position the camera in such a way that this can be avoided. Red laser blinds the camera not because of the color but because of the intensity in a small area. Even if you use a filter, it won't help much and with the new laser pointers of different colors it can be even more difficult to use a filter.

How to make a night vision light?

I have a security camera, but it does not have night vision. Is there anyway I can make one, or get one under $10, to makw it easier for my security camera at night? (The lights can not be seen by the human eye)

Answer
use ordinary lighting for security at night. it ups the bar for anyone trying to do wrong if clearly visible, so that is as much a deterrent as cameras. ordinary lighting will give more detail and color which are important clues to making an ID. IR is monochrome and blurry and in some cases not admissable as evidence.

the cheap IR illuminators simply use LED's. they provide enough IR to be useful at about 2 meters (6 feet) maximum distance, great for camcorders at parties. totally useless for surveilence. you need the military type IR lamps, about the size of a small refrigerator to cover a parking lot.

not seen by human? get real, all a crook has to do is use a pocket digital camera to find IR illumination sources. doh.
