How can I record off of my security Camera?

I have a security camera. That has night vision on it. Problem is I don't have a dvr. What I do have is my cpu, a digital cable box that has dvr, and the camera and receiver. Is there anyway I can record footage with these items? If not what would be my cheapest route?

Answer
If the cam receiver has a USB plug, it can tether to the computer.
If it's "Plug-n-Play" it should be detected and self power through the USB line.

Then, since video takes huge amounts of hard drive, you want a 'motion detection' software, to capture things that are moving while in the camera's field of view. That reduces the space needed on the drive.
Here's some of the software (it's free):
http://www.snapfiles.com/Freeware/security/fwvideosurveillance.html

Hook all of these things up and test it indoors to see how it works, alignment, and so on.
"Save" from the software selected onto the computer, to a folder you create. Somewhere on the desktop is handy to get to.

What is a cheap way to set up a security camera in my car?

cranford72

I own a small taxi cab co. and I want to install security cameras in my cabs (with night vision if possible). Sound would help also.

Answer
Walmart has a rearview camera for the car for only 99 dollars.
It has a 3.5 inch color display and all wiring inlcuded with a small cam.It is surprisingly good quality camera and color display.

Iâve seen some cheap IP cameras and I donât trust them, they look like something a 3 year old plays with so I need a good quality commercial grade security camera. Referrals please and thank you.

Answer
The IP cameras I install are by Everfocus, this is a commercial rated camera not a cheap camera sold at Wal-mart or Costco. Should last you for years and good warranty.

To people with security cameras at home: How often do you check them?

N

I've always wondered in those big houses how often people check their security cameras at home, if they have them. Is it just when your house is burglarized or do you do it after every dinner party?

Answer
Probably in big houses with a lot of security cameras they have a DVR security system set up that records all the video cameras. With those computerized systems they can look at what different cameras recorded at different times.

They can also have it set up to receive cell phone alerts when a motion detector on a camera detects movement in a certain area. The cameras can also be viewed from a computer at another location.

Apple products turned into video ip Surveillance?

Just curio

My family owns alot of apple products.
5 ipads
4 iPods

And we have a lot of kids around the house. A lot of stuff that needs watch in case were out of the house. I don't really want to invest in a security system we i know all these iproducts are just as good as ip cameras

Does anyone know an app or a tweak I can use to monitor all of these ip cameras in my apple devices on one ipad?
Ideally with motion senior that runs in the background doesn't require a computer to view images (ipad/iPod/iPhone to ipad), takes video, audio and pictures (optional)

Mostly I want it to keep an keys on the kids in the living room when I'm cooking or the house when I'm out shopping. It's really important to me and I appreciate all the help I can get

ipad 4 vs nexus 7 vs samsung notebook 10:1 - which one is better pls?

Tubetruth

Answer
This is generally a matter of preference. Actual specs like CPU speed don't mean a whole lot when you compare two totally different operating systems like iOS and Android, but I'll give them to you anyway. And if you're talking about some Samsung laptop, you shouldn't be comparing it to a tablet. Laptops are definitely a better tool, and can go far more in-depth with just about everything from programs (MS Office, Adobe Programs, etc.) and OS to hardware functionality (like having a CD drive and USB ports). First choose between "Laptop and Tablet" before you start choosing between tablets.

###QUICK SUMMARY###

iPad 4 has a smooth, reliable (but limited) software/functionality. It has two cameras (rear and front-facing) and an incredibly rich, beyond-HD display that more than triples the resolution of the Nexus. On the other hand, the Nexus 7 has a better CPU and GPU. The OS is incredibly open for you to use and adjust how you see fit, which could cause problems like lag, glitches, and (in extreme cases) crashing later on for anyone who doesn't know what they're doing. Put simply the iPad is definitely more of a "toy" than the Nexus, being visually more appealing and having a larger game library on the App Store than Google Play. However, the Nexus would be a much better asset as far as productivity and all-around usefulness goes- it's also cheaper in almost every conceivable way.

###EXTREMELY DETAILED PRODUCT INFORMATION###

***iPad 4 by Apple***
Operating System: iOS 6.0.1 (also by Apple)
CPU: 1.4GHz Dual-CoreCPU (Central Processing Unit)
GPU: Quad-core PowerVR SGX554MP4
RAM: 1GB (Probably DDR3L, not sure though)
Display: 9.7in (2,048x1,536)
Rear-facing camera: 5MP Photos/1080p Full HD Video
Front-facing camera: 1.2MP Photos/720p HD Video

iPad's and anything else running iOS are incredibly secure. This makes them almost impossible to REALLY fuck up (unless you throw the thing against a wall or something). On the software end, you're incredibly limited to Apple's yellow-brick-road. If you're perfectly content with the way the system is and have no real desire to change any major features or functions, go with the iPad. Also, if you're completely technologically illiterate but still want something that can do all the things a tablet can do, go with the iPad. They're fast, smooth, and reliable specifically because Apple made it almost impossible to screw around with. Some Android tablets easily out-perform the iPad right out of the box. However (unless you really know what you're doing with Android OS), in a matter of months the Android will have slowed down and started to develop bugs and glitches while the iPad will still be going strong after a year.

***Nexus 7 by ASUS***
OS: Android 4.2.1 "Jellybean" (by Google)
CPU: 1.3GHz Quad-core Cortex-A9
GPU: NVIDIA 12-core 416MHz GeForce ULP
RAM: 1GB DDR3L
Display: 1280x800
Rear-facing camera: None
Front-facing camera: 1.2MP Photos/720p HD Video

"As a Google Nexus device, the Nexus 7 offers a "pure Android" experience, as it features the stock Android operating system, free of manufacturer or wireless carrier modifications..." -Wikipedia

Android OS is a Linux-based operating system that is (just like Linux) completely open-source. This means (if you know how) you can do just about anything you can imagine with your Android device. Granted, the manufacturing companies (in this case, ASUS and Google) still add their little security measures to prevent any completely clueless Android users from totally screwing up their devices in a matter of hours. However, these are easily bypassed with a process called "Rooting" (MEANT FOR ADVANCED USERS ONLY). The Nexus 7 is particularly open to adjustment. Rooting it is almost effortless, customizing it is easy... it's the ultimate techno-geek's plaything. That being said, because it's SO easy to change and customize, that also means it's incredibly easy to screw up. So if you're a pretty technologically adept person and love customizing technology how you see fit, the Nexus 7 would be perfect for you.

Choice is yours, and I'm sorry this ended up being like 30x longer than I expected.
I was bored and know this topic very, very well... lol

What kind of security camera system should I buy to watch my house from a laptop?

el aji

I've heard-of a security camera system that I could watch my home from a laptop while at work. What company should I refer to get this setup, and will any laptop work?

Answer
Hello

Not all DVRs are created equal, in fact there are many options that offer varying performance much like the automobile industry. In the world of DVRs you can find the equivalent of a $10,000 Kia and a $350,000 Ferrari and everything in between. Both have 4 wheels and windshield but that where the similarities end, itâs under the hood that counts. Just like any other consumer electronic in the end you get what you pay for.

I suggest you buy a PC based DVR has they have more processing power and normally have a much smaller file size and offer more features then Standalone DVR's. I know many people buy a cheap standalone DVR, only to upgrade to a PC based in 6 months especially when they are using it to manage a store remotely. Also PC based allows you to record up to 64 cameras where a standalone will have a limit of 16.

Many people have the misconception that a PC-Based DVR is simply an off-the-shelf PC with video capture (encoder) cards, display (decoder) cards and some generic OEM software. A true DVR requires years of research and development to facilitate the seamless integration of both the hardware and software. DVRs are highly complex systems that must run 24/7, processing millions of images per day. This makes consumer-level hardware inadequate for DVRs which is why Ascendent uses custom-built PCs with performance-level hardware.

My personal favorite DVR is Ascendent X4 series: Ascendentâs Tri-Fusion Hybrid Platform allows for the creation of a true hybrid surveillance system by utilizing the advantages of Analog, Megapixel, and IP technologies for unparalleled customization and expandability. I am working on government projects and use Ascendent cameras and DVR because the offer superior performance and cost less then comparable brands like bosh, Honeywell and pelco.

The X4 also uses the latest H.264/SVC codec offer video substantially better quality,. While its file size sizes is 30% smaller than MPEG-4, 60% smaller than MPEG-2, and exponentially smaller than MJPEG.

File size is crucial to streaming because most DVRâs on the market record at real time performance (30FPS per channel) so on a 4CH is trying to send 120, 8CH 240, and a 16CH 480 images per second which requires way too much bandwidth even for the most extreme internet connections.

The smaller the files size the more images are able to be sent, and the faster they can be processed improving both FPS and speed. File size is the heart of any DVR and goes far beyond just its streaming capabilities, as it also determines the recording storage time, how much you can back up at once, how fast it renders and searches video. The file size of a DVR impacts the performance of the DVR in just about every aspect from speed to longevity and is often the most important spec of any DVR.

If you are buying a DVR and streaming is a high priority I suggest you ask for a demo and connect to the DVR to make sure it is able to stream fast enough for your needs. Most DVRs say they have remote viewing but it is often too slow and laggy to be of any use especially if it is a standalone. Some good DVR brands that I recommend are Bosch, Pelco, Honeywell and Ascendent. These brands are what security professionals use, Q-see, Swan and Lorex are only used in residential applications because they are sold by Tiger Direct, Spytown, Newegg, Sams Club, Costco and other retail outlets but are not used by any security professionals also their tech support rarely speaks English as their first language...

These brand manufacturers also have a complete line of CCTV cameras for any application from residential to military.

What is the best security camera for night?

Mike

I live out in the country and have been robbed recently. I currently have security cameras, but they are not the best of quality. I have a 4 channel DVR from Lorex and all the cords are ran already so I would perfer wired cameras. Without spending lots of money, what's the best bang for my buck? I need to see clearly at night about 100 feet. Also too, does having too many lights effect the IR of the camera? Is less or more IR rating of camera better? Thank you.

Answer
This camera is probably one of the best security cameras out there. It has a 65' illumination range, its indoor/outdoor, has 23 LEDs and has high resolution (700 TVL)

The second camera is pretty similiar, same brand and everything, but has a 100' illumination range and 36 LEDs.

The IR switches on when the light around the camera is 0 lux or below. If you leave a light on by the cameras all night they'll never switch over to IR mode, but if it is dark by the camera they should switch over. The light sensitivity or IR rating is how much light there needs to be for the camera to switch modes, the cameras I listed have a sensitivity of 0 lux, which means if there is less light out than a candle would provide, the camera will switch to IR mode.

Answer
It seems the cpu on both of them is the same im guessing.. sorry but the asus.. your not showing specs what you are showing for osme of them are options

But overall Asus is the best pc company by relaibility, problem at start ...basically overal with sony comming in near the middle..

just go with the asus.. but gettting an ROG will do you way better. ROG is the gaming series. even if you dont game all that means is that you get supreme performance because thats what a gaming computer is.

ASUS excels in everything it makes in every category. i know its crazy but everything it makes either tops the line and pushes every one off or their accesory is soo cheap and reliable that everyone needs it

ASUS =
#1 Motherboard manu.
one of the most reliable gpu vendors
one of the best monitor makers--HD and 3D ones are rated suppper high
accesoris--makes super cheap usb 3 hubs that everyone wants
BEST gaming computers
pc mag and consumer reports rated best pc manufactorer(#2 in computer...#1 of course was apple)

like the top guy said. sony is waay overpriced for its lack of features and performance

hp is always the eye candy. when ppl come to me to help them buy computers my choice always ends with hp

they have the highest agrresive pricing which means their specs are soo good for its price i cant choose others. but they are the second worst pc maker in the world ...7 yrs running.. it gets the honor of first sometimes.. major problems always happen with hp :( but ive bought a lot of them

its a hit and miss with hp

best answer if u liked this plz.. scroll mouse over my name...with that many answers you know im a great guy

is this a good laptop?

hi chococol, everything looks right on the money except for your virus protection mcafee i like it but it will enterfere with your windows defender and windows defender is an important to vista ultimate along with your virus protection it really prtects you but norton and mcafee will knock your windows defender out and that is too much protection so i would recommend avg and some of the other virus protection that is out. but now you said your system will run $2200, that is a little expensive and be it far from me to try and talk you out of it but if i were you i would shop around and see what all of them are charging this sounds like dell prices and dell came in fourth by consumer report magazine. hp came in first in laptop followed by tabishi they judged on longer lasting and over all strength. good luck hope i was helpful to you

I'm going on a road trip this weekend and once we arrive at our destination, we'll park the car and not return to it for about 5 hours. Is it safe to leave my digital SLR camera in the car. I have a case for it and everything and i want to take pictures once we return, but will the heat or other factors affect my camera?

Answer
At this time of year in the Northern Hemisphere I would think you should be fine. (I have melted plastic in cameras in the same situation in the summer.)

If you are in Australia or security is an issue then we may need to re-think this answer.

Is it true that digital SLR cameras are not allowed at live shows?

spazz099

I got tickets to a supershow in december and i just bought a new SLR camera for this specific event but people have been telling me that security doesnt allow SLR's. I know they dont allow video recording but not allowing SLR's sounds stupid. Anyone know for sure what their policy is?

Answer
When we went to ECW/SD tour in Newcastle, Australia, there was an announcement before the show started encouraging us to take as many pics as we liked of our favourite superstars, but forbidding us to do videos.

They didnt mention any styles of camera that were allowed to be used, however, I think you would need a SLR as I had a 10mp digital with a good optical zoom and still found it hard to take good pics.

How do you use a wireless security camera and receiver with your computer monitor?

Answer
Hello

you don't want to sue wireless for a number of reason listed bellow.

if you want to view your cameras from any computer just get a DVr with good remote connection then you can connect to it from anywhere that has internet.

I recommend going with a PC based DVR but if you don't want to spend the money I suggest Ascendent's AVP-4120 DVR or Pelco's DX-4000 as they will allow you to view all your cameras instantly from anywhere in the world using either IE. The AVP-8240DVDUSB will also allow MAC platforms as well as PC to remotely view cameras and it uses the new H.264 codec but no standalone will offer the video streaming or performance a good PC based DVR will.

http://ascendentdvr.com/dvr-standalone/standalone-dvr-usb-network-h264.html

Not all CCTV equipment is created equal, in fact there are many options that offer varying performance take cars for example. In the world of CCTV you can find the equivalent of a $2,000 golf cart and a $350,000 Ferrari and everything in between. Both have 4 wheels but that's where the similarities end, itâs under the hood that counts.

95% of all wireless cameras are compete junk and any wireless camera under $400 run on 1.2, 2.4GHZ or 5.8GHZ and wont offer encryption. This is bad for 2 reasons one the signal can easy be jammed, with a laptop you can actually hacked video feeds so a criminal can use it to spy and know a good time to target your business or home.

Just like any other consumer electronic in the end you get what you pay for. Most retailers and sellers make about a 40-80% profit margin, this is after costs like shipping and overhead. That means when you buy a product that costs $100.00 the manufacturer usually has only spent $30 to build it which simply means itâs not a good product and will probably have a working life of about 2 months. There is a reason these products are 1/10 of the price of good and reliable DVR brand names. The type of seller these products attract are online sellers (ebay) and will make profits margins as low as 3% which means they canât afford to offer good service or allow for RMAs (returns). Cheap products are like disposable razors they are NOT designed to last for a long time and you will end up replacing them every 2 months.

Now some products can be made cheaply like ipod cases, screen protectors, and other simple products with no moving parts or electronics. DVRs need to be good quality as they run 24/7 (20X more than the average electronic device) and process anywhere from 30-480 frames per second which in a year is over 15 billion images, and a good DVR should last 3-5 years.

A true DVR and camera require years of research and development to facilitate the seamless integration of both the hardware and software. DVRs are highly complex systems that must run 24/7, processing millions of images per day and are one of the few products that canât be made both well and cheaply. Cheap and inexpensive products like Q-see, X10, Swan, Lorex, and other low grade DVRâs and cameras sold by Tiger Direct, Newegg, radio shack Sams Club, are not used by any security professional and should only be used by hobbyists.

To be honest the "frys" products are Garbage and are not used by anyone who has worked with CCTV or security products. I They are poor quality especially for IR cameras, due to low quality material, low S/N ratio, and low grade CCD image chips.

Also as far as night vision or IR cameras go most do not give good images in the dark. Many companies claim good night vision but there are only a handful of brands who give night vision over 30 feet out doors. normally if a cameras is rated 150 feet of IR it will give you ok images at 30 feet at night and good images at about 20 if rated for 60 feet you might get 15 indoors and will be useless outdoors.

Now one option for wireless is using commercial IP radios which are basically wireless routers on steroids and can offer distances up to 40km of wireless with military encryption, this is not a cheap solution but neither is digging a trench. using these radios not only give you a security infrastructure but also communications infrastructures as well for internet and other purposes (LAN network)

Good radio company
http://www.tranzeo.com/

now in order to use this wireless network to distribute video you need to buy IP cameras which are similar to IP cameras only they transmit video over networks instead of a cable.

The company I recommend for CCTV products is Ascendent Technology Group they have a large product line and offer better products then Pelco Honeywell and Bosch and are about %20 cheaper and in my opinion have the best IR outdoor camera line up.

In the end you want to buy your DVR from a Brand name DVR manufacture

These brand manufacturers also have a complete line of CCTV cameras and DVR for any application from residential to military and stand behind there warranties.

Can I get fined/arrestified/notified because of shoplifting by evidence of video camera if I satisfy all of these conditions: a) I am a suspicious person who CVS will likely check the security video of (if there is one) b) CVS knows my name c)CVS know what school I go to.

why wouldn't you be able to get caught? Even if they didn't have any of that, they'd probably catch you next time you try to steal anything. Which in my opinion, if you're stupid enough to get caught shoplifting, you should be shot to decrease the surplus population of morons.

How to set up a security camera and view it through the internet?

Bobby Chan

Hi so we have a security camera that allows up to view our property. Does anyone have any step by step instructions on how to set up the camera on a webpage or something through the internet so i am able to view the camera when i am not at home?
thanks.

Answer
One easy solution would be to purchase something like a Linksys internet video camera (linked below) that you can find in many stores or online and runs about $90-$100. Give it power, plug it into your router, and you can access the feed when not at home.

There are other similar products on the market.

If your goal is to use an existing webcam setup, that would be a little more complicated.

What kind of home security camera should I get?

best security cameras for outdoor on Outdoor Hidden Surveillance Cameras - Best Surveillance Cameras
best security cameras for outdoor image
Q. Looking for some tips and ideas for buying home security cameras for our home (outdoor surveillance).

Answer
I would recommend a weatherproof security camera system with infrared sensors. Wireless security cameras are most convenient as well. If you are on a tight budget, you could try dummy cameras. As long as they are clearly visible, they may scare some bad guys away.

Matt

I work for a large corporation and recently they have implemented a system, where by they use security camera footage to now on a bi-daily basis to gauge our performance. I never consented to have this footage be used to gauge my performance at work, I was wondering if this is at all legal, because in my opinion, it doesn't seem like this is a legitimate business pratice. Any help would be appreciated.

Answer
what makes you think your consent is needed?
what makes you think your opinion of what is a legitimate business practice carries any weight?

you obviously have a high opinion of yourself and your importance to this employer, I hope you are correct because if you are wrong and continue with this attitude you will find yourself unemployed rather quickly....

if you do your job the way you are expected to all this footage will do is verify the fact that you are a good employee, if they see anything other than that; it is YOUR fault....

if I move to a rental home that doesn't have a security system can I cancel my ADT contract?

best gsm security camera on ... security systems, alarms and home security cameras by top name
best gsm security camera image

Daniel

I am selling my home and moving into a rental that doesn't have a preexisting security system. Can I cancel my contract with ADT because of this?

Answer
Great question. First, the ADT contract: depends where you are ion the contract terms. There is usually an initial term of three years, followed by a renewal period (and that varies by state, and by when you bought the system, and even by whether you bought it from ADT directly, or one of their authorized dealers). The contract will tell you exactly what the timing is, and the penalty for early termination. Companies like ADT discount the upfront cost (and lose money), which they make back over time from the monthly fee. If you stop paying the monthly fee, they are possibly not even breaking even on the relationship - and they do not like that. They may be willing to work with you, so it pays to try. As for as getting a system from ADT for your rental, that will be a tough one. But again, it pays to ask. They may be willing to set you up in the rental, but from what I hear, it's a stretch.

In the past, there were few choices for renters, since most alarm companies did not want to deal with them. Now there are 100% wireless systems, which means not just the sensors (and landlords like wireless sensors!) but also wireless communications. That means cellular monitoring, the only truly safe way to go, and with so many folks going cell only, it's the solution for the future. It also means you can move it with you from apartment to apartment, or to a house.

You may decide you still want a system, even though renting. If you had a system before, and are used to it, that may mean it's part of your peace of mind. So, you may be shopping, and looking into the few companies that can serve renters. There are a lot of things to consider in a new system: first, is the equipment listed by Underwriters Laboratories listed, and CP-01 compliant? Many states require these levels of approval, and there are recent entries into the alarm industry that are not "real" alarm companies - they just provide equipment and service - and you hope they are the real deal. Another way to tell is the cellular network they use: you want GSM (the same network platform used by AT&T and T-Mobile for coverage and reliability). frankly, I would be worried about any "one-off" networks.

Another point is licensing - and this is a good way to tell the newcomers from the bad guys. Make sure the company you choose is licensed in your state and local jurisdiction, as required. The real alarm companies spend the time and money to become and remain compliant, and that says a lot.

Then comes interactive features. You probably want the best, like the features sold by Alarm.com through a network of dealers. Alarm.com really invented this arena, and they remain ahead of the others by a wide margin. Services now include not just the notifications, but apps for iPhone, Bâberry, and even Droid, full video with wireless cameras, and even appliance control with Z-Wave. In other words, the real deal.

You also want a full-featured system, so that you can add devices any time, from the complete array of wireless sensors out there. GE has the most complete line - and be sure you get a wireless monitored smoke/heat sensor with your system. Our company recommends at least one with every system, and it does not add to the monthly fee.

Last is reviews. you want to look hard on-line for reviews of the various companies you consider, and there should be lots of good reviews (and few if any bad ones). Look at the level of enthusiasm and specific references to things people like - are you looking for the same things!

So, as you can see, lots to think about, but worth the time. Good luck to you!

I want to put on in my apartment to record who is coming in and what they are doing. Anyone have experience with these sort of things. I want one that will record to maybe my computer and not real expensive.

Answer
U can use a trail camera or game camera, which is what hunters use to watch wild animals without them knowing.

Here's a bunch of them:
http://www.cabelas.com/ssubcat-1/cat20098.shtml

But if U want to record to your computer, here's another option: Use a regular web cam and "dorgem" software. The computer acts as the motion sensor via software.

See this tutorial:

How do you hook up a security camera to a dvd recorder?

best security camera recorder on ElectronicPro. 4GB Waterproof Spy Camera DVR Watch
best security camera recorder image

John

i just bought a security camera and a tv from walmart . I need to record it on a dvd-r disk but im not sure what equiptment i need and how to set it up. thanks-john

Answer
You just wasted whatever money you spent at walmart they will work well for dummy cameras but that's it

Not all DVR are created equal, in fact there are many options that offer varying levels of performance much like the automobile industry. In the world of DVRs you can buy the equivalent of a $10,000 Kia and a $350,000 Ferrari and everything in between. Both have 4 wheels and windshield but that is where the similarities end, itâs under the hood that counts. And using the car analogy what you have here with the the Walmart camera is a used lawnmower that needs the blade to be replaced.

The type of seller these products attract are online sellers (ebay) and will make profits margins as low as 2% which means they canât afford to offer good service or allow for RMAs (returns).

A true DVR requires years of research and development to facilitate the seamless integration of both the hardware and software. DVRs are highly complex systems that must run 24/7, processing millions of images per day and are one of the few products that canât be made both well and cheaply. Cheap and inexpensive products like Q-see, Swan, Lorex, and other low grade DVRâs sold by Tiger Direct, Newegg, Sams Club, are not used by security professionals and should only be used by hobbyists.

These brands are what security professionals use, Q-see, Swan and Lorex are only used in residential applications because they are sold by Tiger Direct, Newegg, Sams Club, Costco and other retail outlets but are not used by any security professionals also their tech support rarely speaks English as their first language...

Here are the websites of some good DVR and CCTV camera brands.

http://www.ascendentgroup.com (AVP-4120)
http://www.honeywell.com
www.pelco.com/ (DX-4000)
http://www.bosch.com

Two good economical DVRs I would recommend are Ascendent's AVP-4120 DVR or Pelco's DX-400. They will allow you to view all your cameras instantly from anywhere in the world using either IE, or a client software. The AVP-4120 uses the latest H.264 codec to improve streaming and recording time, and will allow PCs and Apple computers to remotely view cameras. These are the DVRs I would recommend that are good quality and affordable

How can I use my webcam as a security camera?

profound_0

I've ths idea of using my webcam as a security camera which will record the videos in the hard disk while I'm not at home. To do so, I need a video recorder software which'll take the video feed input frm the webcam and save it into the hard disk. Am I right?
If I'm thn which software can I use?
If I'm not thn how to do it?
...I'm sure it's possible but don't exactly knw how.

Answer
I have a creative webcam, and it came with software that turns your pc into a security system with a program that came with the camera called Webcam Monitor. In this program you can set up your camera to start recording a clip when it detects motion, and then it will send an e-mail to a specified e-mail address. I wasn't able to set it up correctly though and I don't know what I was doing wrong.

Thanks.

I want this to be as cheap as possible.

Answer
To recorder the video you need a computer with lot of hard drive space or a video recorder - this can be digital or analog.

I use a DVR similar to this one:
http://shop3.frys.com/product/5264307;jsessionid=LUbMxK4-T8mXlplSCVHxJQ**.node1?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG
You need to add a hard drive. One of these is probably good enough for around 30 days of recording:
http://shop3.frys.com/product/4570717;jsessionid=LUbMxK4-T8mXlplSCVHxJQ**.node1?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG
but a 500 gig is probably a better idea. Set the image capture so when nothing is going on, there is only 1 still every 4 or more seconds, then set motion detection areas to trigger the recording to go to real time - that will revert to the 1 per four seconds (or whatever you choose) after about 15 seconds of no motion in the detection area.

Then comes the cameras... Higher resolution or night vision or wireless or rated for outdoor add to the cost. Remember - wireless is only wireless for the video signal - you still need power for the camera. If wired, the low-res are probably the cheapest cameras you will find with decent resolution.
This is probably as cheap as it gets - the night vision "throw" is not very far...
http://shop3.frys.com/product/4748899?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG
If you only need it for a one-time deal and install the camera under the roof-eve, you can use a indoor camera - but just so you know, it won't last as long as a camera rated for outdoor use.

I use these:
http://shop3.frys.com/product/5080315?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG
good resolution and long throw on the night vision.

I am not aware of single channel DVRs... since you have 4 channels, you can use up to 4 cameras - but you do not need to fill all the channels.

If you are that paranoid, you might also consider a battery back up - the cameras and the DVR need to plug into it.
Since we don't know the cameras you want to use, we don't know the power they draw - but this
http://shop3.frys.com/product/4775399?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG
should last a couple of hours with just the DVR.

Be sure to install the DVR in a place that is (1) difficult to find and (2) attached to something solid so it cannot be easily removed.

How much would it cost to set up Home Security Camera system?

ferretkiss

I would like to put some security cameras around the outside of the house, because of trouble with the neighbors. I would like to view what the cameras see, later. I think I would need at least three cameras, one on the car in the street, one on the front porch area, and one on the back yard area. Or maybe two in the front.

What is the best way to do this?

About how much would it cost?

Answer
It depends what you want to do with the video.

An inexpensive consumer 4-channel surveillance DVR is about $300.
Add in a 500 gig hard drive for about $70 (records the video).
4 cameras - Average $100 each for outdoor rated, night vision, so $400... budget around $1,000 for a low-end, multi-camera, system.

The expensive part is the labor. Are you planning to install it yourself? How will the camera's wires get from the camera to the DVR? Thinking "wireless" cameras? They still need electricity - so is there power where you want to install the cameras?

Actually, "wireless" security cameras use more wires than wired ones... The camera needs power (1 wire) and transmits video wirelessly to a base station. The base station needs power and a wire to the DVR. Total = 3 "wires". A wired camera has one long "combo" cable that carries video and power.

How do you want to monitor that video? The DVR has a video-out connection that can connect to any TV with a working, available, composite (yellow RCA jack) plug. More expensive DVRs can be added to a computer network...

Frys (and Frysdotcom) has a good selection of security and surveillance stuff...

Get a CCTV camera with infrared night vision and CCD sensor - do not get a camera with a CMOS sensor, they are no good in the dark.

Get a camera with a high resolution (480) and and digital DVR than can record that resolution
