Is iPad Home Sharing the only way to securely share your iPad with home users, computers or family members?

Maggie

Answer
iPad Home Sharing and family sharing are two different things though they overlap somewhat in function. Home Sharing is an iTunes feature that lets you share your media library with up to 5 computers (called authorized computers) in your house. This can include movies, music, apps and TV shows.

However, if you want to selectively share your iPad itself with other family members (including minors) then you can use the iPad's Restrictions feature to temporarily disable apps that you do not want shared. You can find this under Settings > General > Restrictions, and also set a 4-digit passcode for it. This feature lets you set restrictions for the major apps like Safari, iTunes, YouTube, Camera, Facetime and Ping.

Other than app restrictions, you can also set online restrictions in the form of private browsing. For secure sharing and better online security, install privacy & data security apps like HidePad.

Help deciding - iPad 4 vs. iPad Air?

Contra

Ok, so I have a set budget. I was going to get the 64GB iPad 4 w/ Verizon, but I can't help but feel like it's just not going to be as good as the iPad Air. Is the iPad Air really that much faster than the iPad 4? Is the speed that much different? That's my main concern - speed. I don't want lagging or freezing or anything like that and I just want to know are they really THAT much different when it comes to it?

My 2nd concern is that if I do get the iPad Air, I can only afford the 32GB w/ cellular. I'm not quite sure if that's enough space either. I don't have many songs to put on there. My iPhone is a 16GB but it's completely full. I can't ever download anything else, even when I delete an app or 2 - it's not enough space for new things. I have 6 songs, about 1,000 pictures (the pictures alone take up 3.7GB) and about 88 apps including the ones that come pre-loaded (App Store, Camera, etc.). I'll want to put MOST but not all of those apps on my iPad - I don't really need a lot of music, I have Pandora & Spotify, and I want to watch TV but not download movies/shows, just use apps like HBO Go and Hulu to stream. I like to take pictures, but not sure I'll be using it as much as my iPhone for that.

Can someone help me decide? Is the iPad Air worth getting or should I stick to the last model with more space?

Also, when getting a cellular model, do I have the option of never activating it unless I need to? I read Verizon has daily plans - how do those work exactly? If I went somewhere that didn't have wifi could I just pay for a daily plan and use it for that day/until the MB were used up? Or do I have to have an actual cell plan/contract with them to use the cellular network period?

Thank you for your help!

Answer
While iPad Air is definitely faster and supports newer hardware, there's no reason not to get the iPad 4 because that's a prety good tablet in its own right. It was released in 2012, which isn't that old. The hardware is appreciably fast enough for movies, music and apps without freezing (I know because I have this model)

Also, if you plan to use WiFi more than cellular then simply get the WiFi model. I reckon if you go for a cellular + WiFi model then the data plans would be factored in and charged too, on a monthly basis (i.e., there would be a contract involved).

Coming back to ipad 4 vs iPad Air, if your budget is good enough for the 64 GB iPad 4 then go for it. Given your storage requirements, a 64 GB iPad 4 makes far better overall sense than compromising with a 32 GB iPad Air.

Besides, iPad 4 also supports the latest iOS 7, so it should be a good choice for you, for the next couple of years.

Lastly, there are speculations about Apple working on a newer (larger) iPad for a 2014 release:

recomend security cameras?

bill

can you reccomend a good security system that will handle 3 cameras with motion detectors that can be viewed via remote access. please explain if possible.

thanks

Answer
Hello

Now when you ask for cameras with motion detector do you want them to be able to record only when there is motion, or do want them to have an actual motion detector inside of the,.

If you want them to be both a CCTV camera and a working motion detector I suggest Ascendents ASC-380PIR37.

link to the ASC-380PIR37
http://dealer.ascendentgroup.com//specialtycameras/31_1.html

If all you want is a camera that records when there is motion then all you need is CCTV cameras and a DVR. CCTV cameras put out 30FPS per second and send those images to a DVR it is then the dVR job to manage the video (decide when ans how to store the images, and allow you to remote connect to the cameras.)

the problem with viewing your cameras over the internet is most DVR file size is too large. File size is crucial to streaming because most DVRâs on the market record at real time performance (30FPS per channel) so on a 4CH is trying to send 120, 8CH 240, and a 16CH 480 images per second which requires way to much bandwidth even for the most extreme internet connections.

also uses the latest H.264 codec becasue it offers better quality,. While its file size sizes is 30% smaller than MPEG-4, 60% smaller than MPEG-2, and exponentially smaller than MJPEG.

Not all DVR are created equal In fact, there are many options that offer varying performance much like the automobile industry. In the world of DVR's you can find the equivalent of a $10,000 Kia and a $350,000 Ferrari and everything in between. Both have 4 wheels and windshield but that where the similarities end, itâs under the hood that counts. Just like any other consumer electronic in the end you get what you pay for.

If you are buying a DVR and streaming is a high priority I suggest get them to do a demo and connect to the DVR to make sure it is able to stream fast enough for your needs. Most DVR say they have Remote Viewing but it is often to slow and laggy to be of use. Some good DVR brands that I recommend are Bosch, Pelco, Honeywell and Ascendent.

www.ascendentgroup.com (Recommended)
www.honeywell.com
http://www.pelco.com/
http://www.bosch.com

Again I recommend going with a PC based DVR but if you don't want to spend the money I suggest Ascendent's AVP-4120 DVR or Pelco's DX-4000 as they will allow you to view all your cameras instantly from anywhere in the world using either IE. The AVP-4120 will also allow MAC platforms as well as PC to remotely view cameras and it uses the new H.264 codec but no standalone will offer the video streaming or performance a good PC based DVR will.

If you want to see how a good PC based DVR stream bellow are instructions on how to connect to Ascedent's X3L PC based DVR.

Instructions on how to connect to Ascendentâs DVR with Internet Explorer:

1) http://connect.ascendentgroup.com/ (Must be Internet explorer)
2) Install active X control
3) Hit âConnect)
4) DVR type PC
5) DVR code SITE-100
6) User ID Demo (case sensitive)
7) Password demo (lower case)
8) Hit extend config
9) IP address: 24.66.224.223
10) And hit connect

I hope this helps if yo have any other questions feel free to shoot me an email.

PC OR MAC?????????????

Should I get the new aluminum macbook 13 inch or a PC?

Answer
I would get a PC...

PC=Variety of specs, options, quality, prices, vendors, support
Mac=One vendor, limited options, still more expensive. Look below for more information..

Today, Macs use the same hardware as PCs. Why spend extra to get the same CPU chips, graphics cards and OS X isn't as secure as you think..

A number of PCs can also run OS X (Mac OS) http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=os+x+on+pc&btnG=Google+Search&aq=0&oq=os+x+on+ as well just that Apple makes it illegal in order to get Market share.. The reason why Mac can run native Windows is because it is using a subset of PC hardware,

If you decide to buy a Mac for running Windows, you will still have to get the same virus/spyware protection, and run into the same issues as a regular PC.

Now is a Mac worth buying for OS X?

I say: NO... for the following reasons...

ADVANTAGES WINDOWS :
Aprox 90% of the market is Windows and most PCs have windows already pre-installed.
1) Some websites require Internet Explorer, to run IE on Mac you really get ies4osx which is the Windows version of IE running really buggy and illegal if you don't have a legitimate copy of Windows.
2) Supports devices (printers and other things you hook into the computer).
3) More business software/games
4) Want the dock on OS X (Mac)? google/yahoo rocketdock, objectdoc.
5) Used by businesses.

ADVANTAGES LINUX :
1) FREE (most versions are)
2) Install software by eitjher 1) Synaptic Package Manager, 2) Add/Remove 3) Opening a .deb or .rpm file (depending on distribution)
2) Like the Mac OS X effects? go yahoo/google COMPIZ FUSION which can do any cool effect a Mac can do and many ore....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N3gkX9HDfEE (there is no flickering when you use it like on the video, not sure why the person has the flicker)
3) Mac OS X Doc? google/yahoo Avant Window Navigator.Cairo Dock, http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x3rf5q_cairo-dock-mac-os-x-leopard-dock-on_tech
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p0hzi22g2DE
4) It is FASTERr/MORE SECURE to surf on the internet
5) Some Windows programs work with Wnehq/Crossover (also avail on Mac, but why pay $$$)

SECURITY
Mac OS X was hacked in 2006 less than 30 minutes, and within 2 minutes in a contest in 2008 . Linux and Vista were not hacked until another day when restrictions were lowered. Vista was next, and then Linux.
Macs are standardized with Cameras, if your Mac gets hacked, the hacker can turn on your camera with more ease.
Please Note: All OS's have vulnerabilities.

http://news.softpedia.com/news/Microsoft-Finds-Irony-in-Mac-OS-X-Getting-Hacked-Before-Vista-SP1-82135.shtml

VIRUSES
Mac OS X has viruses (and significantly on the rise), a friend of mine has a virused Mac. As more users use Macs, more viruses will come out for it. Especially when users think "they are safe".

QUALITY/PROBLEMS
Contrary to belief, Macs are not better quality. Apple also has been changing suppliers to try to "lower the price" and thus lowering quality. Even with the lower prices, Macs still cost more, they spend a higher percent of budget trying to make it look pretty, and marketing.

Sample of problems: Overheating Macbooks, OS X- not responding to keyboard, some units with 16bit screens, etc. Apple statistics are misleading since Mac users with problem machines are more likely to go out and buy a new computer than PC users. Apple is lowering prices which means you can expect lower quality than in the past. Apple had switched the manufacturers producing parts. OS X also has problems slowing down.

Repairs are more expensive than PCs since the IMac, Mac Mini are compact units, and Apple charges a premium for their services. Some repairs can be done by another repair service but the compact design of the computer causes problems.
With an IMac, if the problem is with the monitor, the whole computer would have to be brought in.
IMac and Mac mini lack expansion.

PRICE
A similar equipped PC is much cheaper to purchase than Mac. Lets use Dell (but you can compare with another PC Brand if you like)

**(LAPTOP)
Dell Inspiron Laptop $849 dropped to $799
15" Screen
CPU: (upgrade to) 2.1GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Graphics: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100
Memory: 3GB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM
Hard Drive: 320GB Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm
Optical Drive: Blu-ray Disc Combo (DVD+/-RW + BD-ROM) - WRITES DVDS,CDS, READS Blue-Ray Disks

Macbook $1349 just dropped to $1224
13" Screen (SMALLER)
CPU: 2.1GHz Intel Core 2 Duo (SAME)
Graphics: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100 (SAME)
Memory: (upgrade to) 2GB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM (LESS RAM)
Hard Drive (upgrade to) 250GBSerial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm (SMALLER HARD DRIVE)
Optical Drive: (DVD-ROM/CD-RW) - (Writes CDs, DVDs, cannot read Blue-Ray) (WORSE AND 1/2 SPEED)

http://store.apple.com/us/configure/MB402LL/B?mco=MTkzOTI0Nw

**(DESKTOP)

PLEASE NOTE: I compare Apple Mac's vs Dells best deal. If you really want an all-in one the Dell all-in-one has more ram, wireless keyboard and mouse and equivalent to $400 for free making the Imac still more expensive when you matching specs. Personally I don't think the All-in-Ones are a good choice, and consider them overpriced, lack expandability and repairs both more expensive and require the entire computer.

PS: Apple knows that they need to make Macintosh look different than PC so all Macs except the Mac Pro will not have a tower option. Apple's low end lacks expandability but it makes the Mac "look different", if Mac had a tower for low-end, more people would realize the similarities between the two.

Dell: (At The Moment) Specs Below costs $809
CPU: 2.4 GHZ Dell Inspiron QUAD (4 Processor) CORE
SCREEN: 20inch Screen
MEMORY: 3GB Ram
HARD DRIVE: 500 GB hard Drive
OPTICAL DRIVE: 16x DVD/CD Read/Writer
GRAPHICS: (upgrade to ) ATI Radeon HD 2400 PRO 128MB

The Mac Mini since it has no monitor, keyboard, mouse, very skimpy on options and setup and is not the best deal... The IMac is better price than the Mac Mini.

IMac ($1400)
CPU: 2.4 GHZ DUAL (2 Processor) CORE (SLOWER CPU)
SCREEN: 20inch Screen
MEMORY: (upgrade to) 2GB Ram (LESS RAM)
HARD DRIVE: (upgrade to ) 500 GB hard Drive

Outdoor security cameras?

Equinox55

Hello looking for an outdoor security system for a farm. Would like a system that has around 4 cameras, must have night vision, and must be able to hook up to a computer that will store the images/video and ftp them to my server. Also motion detection is a must. Wireless is not a must as the building where the cameras will be placed will also store the computer.

Answer
Defender SN502-4CH-002 Feature-Rich 4-Channel H.264 DVR Security System is great and was easy to setup. At the moment I did a quick setup to get it working without running a bunch of wires. I put it inside facing out a window and the night vision does NOT work thru a window. Once mounted outside we'll see if it works. For now it was very easy to setup and use. Just to not turn up the resolution too high with an average monitor or you will lock yourself out. If you do, plug it into a TV to change it back. Lastly, calling their cust service was impressive. No long hold times and very nice people. Not something you find these days.

A good security camera system that i can view with my ipad wifi?

William

I need to hook up an outdoor security camera system but one that is also wireless. I would need to view it on my ipad as I am going away on vacation so something that doesnt need recharging would be the best

Answer
Hello

Here is a DVR that will work perfectly for you.

http://www.ascendentgroup.com/x4s.htm

Most DVR's and cameras don't have the ability to view from your i-phone, and you cant just download generic software all DVR's and cameras uses different encryption , software, and compression so you cant use another companies software to view another manufactures DVR.

You want a DVR that has an app specifically designed to work with it like the one I am suggesting below.

What you want is a DVR a DVR converts analog cameras and as well as storing images on site allows you to distribute video over LAN and WAN networks. (internet and network) this way you have both on site storage and recording at your house.

A good Analog DVR will do what you are looking for and not only display them but record them as well they will also allow you to view them over the internet from a Iphone or laptop.

X4S Remote Accessibility
View all your cameras instantly and remotely, and configure the DVR through internet using eitherbusiness in real time from anywhere in the world. MAC or PC platforms (smart phones too). This allows you to manage your

Many people have a misconception that IP has Superior scalability then Analog but with the advancements with DVR's this simply isn't true, you cn do up to 16,000 cameras each camera could even be from a different DVR and a different site.

And when you are using the internet to connect multiple sites together analog transmits over the internet faster with less latency using less bandwidth allowing you not only to view and monitor a situation real time but also effective control PTZ cameras.

What is the Advantage of IP?
Many of the so called advantages of IP simply don't hold water in the real world, IP is mainly Hype and marketing and outside of a few niche applications such as 1 or 2 camera installs, where MP cameras are needed or large scale wireless projects which represent about 2% of the total CCTV market, IP has very few advantages compared to analog based on performance, cost and reliability. (yet all companies touting IP will often use MP cameras to demonstrate the advantages of IP)

IP video is more about marketing then it is about performance as larger companies like Bosch pelco Honeywell axis can change for both hardware and software and once you use there cameras you have to keep using there cameras unlike analog.

Also IP sounds great, plug and play, Better image quality, use existing infrastructure, who wouldnât want that unfortunately this is often not the case.

IP cameras are based on CMOS
Analog cameras are based on CCD (usually)

A CMOS sensor is constructed using a array of pixels, but unlike CCDâs CMOS do not have a capacitor to store the charge for each pixel. The rows of pixels are activated sequentially rather then individually

In short unless you have perfect lighting a good CCD camera will outperform an equivalent CMOS camera.

File Size:
The smaller the files size the more images that are able to be sent and the faster they can be processed improving both FPS and speed. File size is the heart of any DVR and goes far beyond just its streaming capabilities as it also determines the recoding storage time, how much you can back up at once, how fast it renders and searches video.

IP cameras have up to a 5X larger file size then analog cameras. (at same resolution) I have seen MP cameras that on 2MP resolution are over 300X (%3000) larger then our X3 DVR on a CIF image. This is an extreme case but generally speaking IP cameras have a much larger file size.

Most routers and switches are not designed to handle IP cameras they have enough bandwidth but they are not able to process the amounts of commands. (9 IP cameras 30FP is 230 instructions per second) standard routers have enough bandwidth (up to 1GB) but cant handle the amount of tasks (instructions) so frames get dropped latency is introduced and the effectiveness of other devices such as POS, printers and dats storage can be affected and compromised.

Donât get me wrong there are some brutal analog cameras and DVR out there but If you see a good D1 resolution image such as Ascendents Hardware compressed you will not be so quick to join the IP bandwagon.

IP is a young and emerging technology and I have no doubt that in the future it will outperform analog cameras but its not a mature technology yet. Once we start to get standard IP platforms, get rid of license feesâ and existing networks have larger bandwidths then IP video will be a good solution, but until then analog is the way to go.

Make sure you get good cameras as well, Ascendent has the best IR outdoor cameras on the market and are about %50 less then Bosch while offering triple the distance.

Connecting security camera to phone?

Kaycee

Okay so we just got security cameras for our house and we want to be able to see the screen on my iPhone. Okay that was the short part. Here is the other stuff:

the cameras are hooked to a zmodo dvr with 8 channels but we only use 4.

I have tried about 4 different camera apps on the iPhone each with no success

it is connected to a computer monitor (just the monitor, not a working computer) with a VGA wire

I followed the internet cord and it seems to be connected properly into our internet router which is a westell but that's all I know about the internet box.

OK SO if i missed any important info then let me know but we are really struggling to get the camera to work with the iPhone. One of my problems is that I don't really know what i'm supposed to put when it says "address" or "port" or anything like that.
If you help me and it works i'll be soooooo happy! Thanks ahead if you help me out!

Answer
You would need to determine which iPhone application the manufacturer of your DVR requires, and install it on the phone. Make sure that your phone is currently connected to the same router that the DVR is on via WIFI. You would need to contact the manufacturer of your DVR to find out which port you would need to use, as well as other relevant DVR information that the app requires. When it asks for address, what it means is the IP address of the DVR (typically looks like 192.168.1.1) which will need to be found on your DVR, as well as the port number which will also be found on your DVR.

If everything is set up properly, it should be able to connect at this point. If not, check to make sure that your app is configured with the correct DVR information and that the iPhone is connected to the WIFI network. If you know that your phone has the correct app installed and that you have your DVR information entered in correctly (per instruction by the manufacturer), the issue may reside with the physical network (cables, routers ect) or network configuration settings on the DVR itself.

Good security camera for monitoring my driveway?

fengineer0

I'm looking for an affordable home security camera system to monitor my car in my driveway at night. I have poked around online a little bit and have found a few simple looking systems. I'm looking for something that can record onto a hard drive, no VHS, and I'd like to stay away from a DVR too. Does anyone know of a good company that makes something like this? I only need one camera and it can be mounted indoors (indoor porch window overlooks car in driveway), and I need decent night vision capabilities.

Again, I'd like to find something that can record onto a hard drive or a jump drive or something like that.

Please don't give advice when you have clearly never worked with CCTV equipment. Amazon sells complete junk and the video taken by non CCTV cameras often wont hold up in coart because they need water marking in the images.

What program can allow me to view my cameras from another location?

420SMOKER

I recently bought 4 new webcams, I also bought extended USB cords and therefore put the webcams up all around my house and started using them as security cameras. They work pretty well but i can only view my cameras on 1 computer, is there any program where i can view my cameras at work? or on another laptop at my house? thanks

Answer
Hello

What you want is a DVR a DVR converts analog cameras and as well as storing images on site allows you to distribute video over LAN and WAN networks. (internet and network) this way you have both on site storage and recording at your house.

Here is a DVR that will work perfectly for you.

http://www.ascendentgroup.com/x4s.htm

Just about any Analog DVR will do what you are looking for and not only display them but record them as well they will also allow you to view them over the internet from a Iphone or laptop.

IP is like wireless (in theory its perfect) if that was true there would be no wired cameras or analog cameras it would all be wireless IP.

This means CMOS has some significant disadvantages compared to CCD, this means CMOS
have inferior ability to cope with ambient lighting such as back light, bright, deep shadows contrasts, low light and IR this is also known as the real word.

(Ascendents X3 DVR achieves file sizes as low as .3KB on normal image quality on a CIF image no IP camera on the market will come close to this) The file size of a DVR impacts the performance of the DVR in just about every aspect from speed to longevity and is often the most import spec of any DVR.

Best security camera?

What is the best security camera for the home security?

A) IP camera
B) Dome Camera

http://www.aditgroup.com/CCTV-Camera.html

Answer
It depends on the requirements. But your question is confusing. IP (Internet Protocol) is merely the network connection the camera has. Usually, an IP camera - for home use - is not "outdoor rated". Some are... Usually, the IP camera has nowhere to store the video, so a video server or dedicated computer is required if the video needs to be stored.

A "dome camera" is a camera in a dome. It can be IP or analog. If it is an IP camera, then the above paragraph applies. If it is an analog camera, it will need some sort of connectivity to a DVR for video storage and the DVR can be connected to the computer network.

We don't know:
what computer network might be available;
whether you need outdoor rated cameras;
how long - if at all - the video storage needs to be;
whether computer or smartphone access is needed... and lots more.

Without this information, selecting *best* is impossible.

Security camera question?

Was looking for a security camera and across these:

WIRELESS CAM COLOR NIGHTVISION NANNY SPY CORDLESS CAMERA CCTV

http://www.ebay.com/itm/WIRELESS-CAM-COLOR-NIGHTVISION-NANNY-SPY-CORDLESS-CAMERA-CCTV-/290657286298?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_2&hash=item43ac86389a

My only question is the small camera has a cord to it so does that mean it needs to be connected to something inorder for it to record or is that just to hook up to the recevier for later? So could i just put the camera anywhere with out it connected to anything and it would work?

Answer
You have to have power to the camera, and that is where the cord comes in. The camera transmits via WiFi, so it can be recorded in another location by a computer on the same WiFi network.

Cheap surveillance cameras?

Lauren

I want to put up some small, easy to hide/be hidden cameras around my property and house. Preferably ones that let me stream the live video feed to my laptop. The cheaper the better. Post everything you find. Thanks.

Answer
"Cheap" generally denotes poorly made and fast to break requiring replacement.

A better suggestion is to buy the value and "less expensive". Generally, you get what you pay for.

Before we go too far... there are basically two different technologies and both work fine.

1) Analog cameras connected to a security DVR that is connected to the local area network. The DVR generally has a hard drive and embedded operating system that records the video and the network connectivity provides for computer or smartphone access.

2) IP based cameras connected directly to the local area network. If video is to be stored, generally, some sort of network device is needed to record the video. Sometimes this is a "network attached" storage device. Sometimes this is a computer dedicated to do nothing else but record/store the video. The cameras are contacted directly by your laptop (or smartphone.

In either case, we assume you have a need for night vision. Even if you don't, the cameras still need some sort of power. We assume there is power available to these "hidden" areas where you want to install the cameras.

Your requirement of "cameras around my property" tells me that you need outdoor rated cameras. These are generally more expensive than "indoor only" cameras.

"Wireless" is deceiving... we already know that the camera needs power - so that is basically one wire. With an IP based camera system, then the wifi at your house needs to be on and the cameras all need to be on that network - and when you add the network attached storage device or computer for recording the video, then all that configuration and attention is needed. And wires. If the cameras are analog connecting to a network connected DVR, then the cameras send only the video wirelessly to a base station "mate". Each camera has its own base station. The base station needs power (another wire) and the base station video connection plugs into the DVR (another wire) and the DVR plugs onto the network (another wire).

I strongly suggest using known, decent quality gear. I've learned the hard way that when you go "cheap" you pay for it 3-4 times more than if you target decent quality for a few more dollars.

For residential, consumer grade, equipment, I like/use/own/installed on my property, equipment from Swann and Lorex. The analog cameras are usually wired and start at around $140 each (outdoor rated and night vision). The cameras included with the DVR kits will get replaced pretty quickly, but are a good place to start and learn how everything works. Getting an 8-camera or 16 camera network enabled DVR allows you to grow the system with other cameras as you identify the need and you don't make the entire investment upfront. The DVR also has a video output so if you want, you can attach that to TVs throughout the house (with a spare AV-input) and computer connection is available (through the computer network) but not required for monitoring.

D-link makes decent IP network based cameras. You can use whatever windows based computer to be the storage computer - assuming it has enough available hard drive space to store the amount of video you want stored. Network Attached storage devices are cool - but have their own maintenance and administration issues to deal with. Getting this video on non-computer or non-smartphone monitors (like a TV) is difficult.

In either case, accessing the video when you are connected to the local area network (wired or wireless) is generally relatively easy to do - if you need to access the video from a remote location, then you need to be sure the access to the home network through the router is secured and that takes a different skill-set...

At the pro-level, Pelco makes good gear. It is by no means "cheap", but is robust...

how to get a security camera to record all the time?

J

Hello, we have been having issues with someone stealing solar lights out of our front yard. We have bought cameras, and have ran it through a vcr but we have to push record and it don't record 24/7. Now tonight someone came again in spite of a sign that says they are on camera, and we wired the solar lights into the ground, someone came and snapped off 2 of them and of course the camera wasn't on because it don't record 24/7. What is the cheapest way to be able to record all of the time?? Thanks

Answer
Wow, I'm sorry to hear about this issue, must be very frustrating. Hope I can help a bit.

I'm surprised that you're using a VCR to record security footage. I am not even sure where to buy a new VCR.

New security systems of any value record to a DVR or to a hard drive. DVR can be set to record a 24 hour loop. A full week loop may be pushing it for most systems. But surely within 24 hours of the event you can see that your property has been vandalized or stolen, stop the record and have something. The longest most people are unable to see their properly would be the 8-10 hours they are working or sleeping. In the hours between, you'd notice the problem and then could look at the footage.

Also, modern home security cameras can be set to record if they detect motion so you don't have to ever hit "record" or actually even record for the full 24/7 but rather only at times when the cameras see something moving.

There is no VHS in the world that can record for 24 hours a day though. If you want more coverage, you have to move to a digital system that allows for greater compression of the footage and greater storage space. I would imagine that a quick conversation with ANY home security specialist will yield this information and probably the names of recommended systems.

Here's a well-rated system for under $500 that comes with a 500GB drive which can record for 120 days so there are probably cheaper systems that can do a mere 7 days but don't forget that the higher the quality of the video, the more space it requires to be stored and therefore the shorter the overall recording time becomes.

What are the Best Spy Camera EyeGlasses or Sunglasses on the Market?

Aaron S

Hello

What are the Best Spy Camera Eye Glasses or Sunglasses on the Market? When I say "Best" I mean the following in order of priority:

Most inconspicuous
Best video quality (HD is a must, 1080p even better)
Battery Life (as far as I see, 2 hours is on the higher end)

Price is not a big issue, so please provide all answers which meet the above criteria.

Thanks!

Aaron

Answer
Brickhouse is an excellent source for spy glasses. They offer spy glasses with video cameras AND spy glasses with the invisible rear view mirror, which is pretty cool. Obviously your looking for the spy camera version. :)

Anyways I found a link to Brickhouse's spy glasses here:
http://www.brickhousesecurity.com/category/safety+and+security/spy+glasses.do

Within their products I found one pair that records at 1280x960 resolution which is pretty high quality but they only have a 1 hour battery life. Here is a link: http://www.brickhousesecurity.com/product/camcorder+sunglasses.do?sortby=bestSellers&from=fn

Battery life on spy glasses (as with most body worn spy cams) is going to be pretty limited. 2 hours is generally the max on a spy cam this small. However you can turn the camera off to conserve battery life. You might find that the higher resolution you require, the lower the battery life. High quality video drains the heck out of a battery, especially if the battery is small (like small enough to fit in a pair of glasses).

There are lots of other body worn spy cameras you can get though that will record HIGH RESOLUTION video and do it for a longer time.

One of my favorites is the coffee mug spy cam. You can carry that around with you anywhere and the beauty is you can even leave it sitting somewhere for a few hours (without suspicion). Spy glasses are easily detectable if your not wearing them. I'm not sure exactly what you want to use the spy glasses for but if you need a longer battery life on a spy camera with high def video that is portable you might consider venturing beyond spy glasses, cause you seem to have found the best you'll find. The limit on the size of these devices is why you can't find them with a longer battery life.

Anyways... Here is a link to the coffee mug cam I mentioned. I mentioned it because it has a 6 HOUR BATTERY and records with High resolution video.
http://www.my-spycam.com/secure-cam-coffee-mug-w-6-hour-battery.html

There are a lot of other options out there when it comes to spy cams. If you find yourself limited to 2 hours of battery life, or low resolution, look into other disguises. If you can't think of disguises that will work, call up a spy shop and ask for some ideas. Generally they are happy to offer suggestions for certain situations.

Can my camera "see" infra-red?

Ryan Soude

I have a Nikon Coolpix P510. It is a 16.1 megapixel CMOS still digital camera. It also has the ability to record 1080p full HD video. My question is, if I buy an Infrared light to use with the camera, will it be able to see this light kind of like the episodes of Ghost Adventures? I know they have really expensive cameras on that show, and mine is not quite that expensive, but I would like to re-create that effect and before I spend money on an InfraRed light, I want to make sure my money is well invested.

Answer
No, not in the way you want.

You can get an IR filter, but the resulting exposure times will be long, not anywhere near suitable for motion.

The sensors are indeed very sensitive to IR light. So much so that it is a problem. The "cure" is a filter on the sensor that blocks most of the IR light. Take a look at "http://www.lifepixel.com/" to see more info on this and they may have a conversion kit for your camera.

Or.... Get a cheap IR security camera.

Or...film in daylight with natural light and use post-production to make it look like IR.

I bought a wireless 4ch USB DVR Security Camera system from eBay. But after all I got a camera system I didn't want.

Because it does not record all four cameras at the same time and can't hear the sound from the mic of the cameras.

SO I am wondering If I can use another receiver/dvr software on the wireless cameras to record all four cameras?!

(btw I have Windows 7-64bit)

Please take a look at the cameras from eBay.

Will this damage a night vision security camera?

WutUget

Will pointing a LED light, or a laser pen, at a LED night vision motion detection security camera... ruin, damage, or burn out the LED security camera?
Or will it burn out the LED's on the security camera?

Answer
Why do you want to do such a thing?

Security cameras are NOT LED cameras, there are NO LCD sensors out in the market ... not yet anyway. They only use the LED's lamps to fill the area of interest with enough light to record what goes on there. They all use some kind of sensor like a CCD or CMOS

High power leaser such as found in "laser shows" have been know to damage sensors on dSLR cameras, most notably Canon dSLR's. I don't know if this is because Nikon users are more informed shooters and would never let a laser strike their cameras sensors or if the spatial anti-aliasing filter (hot mirror) protects the Nikon sensors better.

I guess if this is a worry, you can place a special filter over the lens that will reject all of the frequencies used by handheld lasers.

Security/surveillance cameras and recording audio?

Q. If a sign is posted saying VIDEO SURVEILLANCE does that mean it is recording audio too or would it have to say VIDEO AND AUDIO SURVEILLANCE?

Can the cameras legally record audio in Washington state? What are the laws for it?

Answer
Legal yes. Audio is also legal but to hard to do to get useful quality.

Does the security cameras at my job have audio?

Q. It seems like my boss knows everything that goes on outside of his office and his door is closed. Is it possible that he can hear the conversations through the security cameras in the ceiling?

Answer
It's possible. But having a security camera running 24/7 with video and audio takes mass amounts of storage since the data isn't compressed.

It's more likely someone tells your boss what is going down.

What is a good home security camera system?

Cline

I am looking for an home security camera sytem that I could link with my tv on it's own channel.

Any suggestions?

Answer
You can do this a couple of different ways:

Method 1) Wireless cameras, transmitting to a Receiver. From the receiver run the signal into a modulator, which will output the video as an actual TV channel. You'd need to add the signal onto your video network using a splitter/combiner.

Method 2) Wireless cameras and receiver, and connect the output from the receiver to an unused video input on your TV. View the cameras by selecting the correct input using your TV remote. This is cheaper and simpler than Method 1.

Keep in mind that the first method using modulation can have problems. The quality of the pictures may be poor, due to interference from nearby channels on your TV network.

The second method is almost foolproof, since you're using the "raw" signal straight out of the receiver.

Good luck!

Can you recommend a great home security camera system?

Bgirl9488

I would like to be able to hook it up to my computer system through my wireless network. Anything affordable out there?

Answer
"Affordable" means different things to different people.

All the IP or Network cameras will do what you want - remember, wireless is not totally accurate. The camera still needs a wire for power.

Do you need color? Night vision? How far does the night vision need to be?

Because the cams are on your LAN, they get assigned an IP address and you get to them through a browser on your computer. There is no "system" - it just depends if you want the computer to record the camera activities. IP cameras are typically more expensive than the analog cameras.

Another method is to get the wireless 2.4 GHz analog cameras and feed the video into a multi-channel DVR like
http://shop1.frys.com/search?cat=-45940&pType=pDisplay
Since the DVR would get assigned an IP address, then you access the DVR - not the individual cameras. Some of the DVRs require you to buy a hard drive, too - 250 gig or 500 gig HDDs are pretty cheap...

Tivo can i use it with security cameras CCTV?

anewhorizo

I have a old series 2 tivo. i wanted to know if i could somehow plug my camera into it with the ability to record. As well as since it has the ability to plug into my network can i stream that feed online

Answer
>could somehow plug my camera into it with the ability to record

Yes. You can plug any camera with composite outputs into the Tivo and set the Tivo to manually record. The Tivo must have a Tivo service contract to make recordings. So unless the Tivo has lifetime service you still have to pay a monthly or yearly subscription. Also the Tivo would have to occasionally contact the Tivo server by phone line or Internet to verify the subscription.

>since it has the ability to plug into my network can i stream that feed online

No. There is software you can put on a computer that will let you transfer files off the Tivo but it's not set up for streaming.

Need help finding outdoor home security cameras?

tnafan19

I prefer them to be:

1. Night Vision
2. Weatherproof
3. Wireless
4. Dome shaped
5. Outdoor (as mentioned above)

I also want a $200 price limit for each camera, but I realize that is probably near impossible for these characteristics. If there is a camera that is similar to these characteristics around the $200 price range please let me know. Thank you in advance

Answer
"Wireless" = video signal only.

The camera still needs a wire for power or a battery that gets recharged with a solar panel for overnight and very cloudy day use. When you have this solved, let us know and we can work through the camera selection. For $200 you will not find much. While we're here, where will the video be recorded? If it is an IP network based camera, you'll need a dedicated computer that does nothing but store the video. If it is an analog camera, then a dedicated network attached DVR. This is another expense that needs to be considered in your budget. In both cases, if the power goes out, if there is a requirement for the computer or the DVR (and the network) to remain working, a battery back up is needed. How much you spend on this will determine how long the systems stays up. You can easily spend $200 just on this back up battery for a few minutes of back up.

Swann and Lorex have good systems for residential installations. Pelco makes decent commercial gear. Battery back up systems from APS, CyberPower and several others will work. This small solar panel
http://www.solarpanelstore.com/solar-power.small-solar-panels.smallspssolarcollectors.solarland2012.info.1.html
can recharge a small battery
http://www.solarpanelstore.com/solar-power.batteries.powersonic.ps12550u.info.1.html
A metal enclosure for the battery is needed. The panel can double as weather protection for the battery and the camera.

As for the "wireless video" we don't know haw far away the receiver is going to be. Wifi and non-wifi wireless video signals have distance limitations so please take this into account in the system design. Walls, trees and other obstructions can also impact (reduce) the distance between the camera and receiver wireless video connection.

Until we know more about the system design, throwing out random suggestions for equipment is not useful for your implementation.

good security camera system for home?

vs2009

I have a budget of max $300 for a good security camera system to monitor my backyard and front of the house, any suggestions?

Answer
You may have trouble finding a reliable and working camera system for only $300. I might suggest saving up a little more to add to your budget if at all possible. Good wireless cameras are going to run $180-$400+ for each camera. The ones you can buy at Wal-Mart or whatever don't work very well and are more trouble than they're worth.

You should check out either SafeMart or Home Security Store. Home Security Store is more like a "home depot" for alarm system equipment.

Here's a good article on camera systems and a link to a review of SafeMart. Hope this helps.

Can anyone recommend a wireless home security camera brand/model (good in low light)?

I am looking for a wireless home security camera I can place in a window. I have read some reviews and cannot find one that is good in low light that is in my price range. I would not want to spend more than $300. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.

Answer
What will you be wirelessly connecting the camera to?

If a video security video recorder like
http://shop3.frys.com/search;jsessionid=igmkt3FrHDCr+YdP-r8Rdw**.node3?cat=-45940&pType=pDisplay
or a modified computer, then one with a base station that connects with an RCA cable to the recorder (or newly installed PC card) would be appropriate.

If you want it to be directly on a computer network (IP-based), and there is no base station (but yout wireless router needs to be working propertly), then an IP network camera is appropriate - and you see what the camera sees by connecting to it using a web browser on your computer...

In either case, for no- or low-light applications, the camera needs to see in the dark using infrared LEDs which come on when it gets dark enough.

Also, keep in mind that "wireless" is ONLY the video connection. The camera still needs a wire - for power. Some - not all - also have a small mic for picking up audio, too.

http://shop3.frys.com/search;jsessionid=igmkt3FrHDCr+YdP-r8Rdw**.node1?query_string=&cat=-45928&pType=pDisplay&resultpage=0&from=0&to=24

Q. I work part time at a convenient store where we have security cameras. We have access to viewing footages in our back office as we wish, even if it's just for us checking out cute customers!LOL So it's pretty sweet. The thing is, I was told that these cameras don't have audio/mic. And when we review footages the audio button can't even be selected. But it got me thinking..... is it possible that the actual store owner has audio access when he checks out footages at his home? Or am I just being paranoid? I've had... Let's just say not safe for work conversations (nothing dirty like that!) over the phone, so I'm worried.
Question is: Since it's convincing and given that our security footages don't have audio, does that mean that our security cameras are incapable of recording sounds? We were told they did not come with mics but I'm a little paranoid! LOL

Thanks in advance you guys!

Answer
Yes, usually security cameras do have audio with em. However, there are security cameras with only video footage option.

There is a possibility that your owner didn't go for the expensive cameras, hence no audio.

Is it advisable to have several fake video security camera along with some real ones?

I need ans

I'm planning on getting two indoor wireless security camera and one outdoor one.

Will it be advisable to put up some fake security cameras as well?

I live in a safe neighborhood and never had any problems the past 10 years, but better to be safe than sorry.

Can you give me any tips about both real wireless security camera and fake ones?

It's just to keep the opportunistic burglars at "bay". I know nothing will keep out hardened criminals if they want to rob and kill me.

Thanks.

Answer
Definitely advisable. Also you should get a few signs saying that you have camera's in the area. The police might be able to help you with that.

I was in a very bad car accident 4th of july. People tell me i should have died but im ok for tthe most part. Police used footage from a security camera at a gas station to help with their investigation. I have been dying to see it. How would i do that

Answer
Seek the professional advice of a Solicitor (UK), Attorney, (US) of which,
if there is a case to answer, They may be able to get you and him/her to
view the 'tape' at the investigating Police Station. No way will that tape
ever leave the sight of the Viewing Room Officer, It's not something you
can take home and watch at your' own convenience. The reason is quite
simply, because It's evidence of the Crime taking place.(Hth).

How do I find out my "real" ip address?

best external security camera on ... SONY CCTV Constant speed mini dome external ip camera, H.264 for sale
best external security camera image

octane

The remotely viewable security camera system at my business requires that I enter the ip address for access. Since I installed a wireless router to my modem, the ip address won't let me view video surveillance. Going to "What is my ip address" gives me information that is not relavent to the DVR.

Answer
You can try clicking start then run which would be the bottom right of the start menu and then type cmd in the command prompt type: ipconfig/all and that would display your ip address which is usually the first one that comes up. I hope that helps, if not the IT suggestion would work to. To find out the external ip address which is usually assigned by the ISP you can trying typing the "nslookup" command in the command prompt as the one above. I think that command gives the external IP.

Home security camera surveillance-how much does a basic set up cost?

LJ

Lost of crime in my neighbor and interested in home camera surveillance. Is it expensive and is it worth it?

Answer
You can purchase a variety of different systems, ranging from a few hundred dollars to a few thousand. You probably don't need the most expensive systems (unless your house is huge). A good option would be to place external security cameras in areas that a thief would most likely pass through before he entered your home. You can then attach the security cameras to a DVR so that they only record when there is activity.

However, I think its important to point out that while security cameras are great, they are only one (optional) component of home security. Your first goal should be a home security system. You can purchase these online and install them yourself. They are the same models as you would receive from ADT or Brinks, but at a fraction of the cost, since you do the actual installation (which is not that difficult). The site below is a good resource for home security systems and camera systems. Good luck.

Answer

How to sneak out of the house past security cameras?

Kiera

My dad recently installed security cameras around our house, and now it's about impossible to sneak out. He doesn't watch the camera videos very often, but I'm scared to try to sneak out because if he DOES watch the video then he'll see me! I don't wanna take a chance sneaking out. (At night)

Any ideas on how to sneak past them or turn off the cameras for a few hours?
Also.... any idea how to turn off the cameras?

Answer
I've done this before and there is no easy way. DO NOT try to turn off the cameras and then back on because he will see that a stretch of time footage is missing (while the cameras were off).

HOWEVER, it is possible: during the day, go to where the camera monitor screens are located in the house and analyze very very closely what their view range is. When you've accomplished this, you'll then know where you should not step into view of them. Of course, for all you know, they may not even have inferred sensors. (so they can't see in the dark anyway). You can test their night vision by looking at the monitors at night.
