what is the best security camera setup for me?

Chris

ok so here this goes. I'm a pretty aware person, I've worked in security for over 5 years. Im not a doomsday prepper but i like to have extra stuff in case i need it. i recently moved in with my girlfriend and her family in a condo complex. There are no cameras in the complex. today i walked outside to go to an apointment and im starring at a blank spot where my motorcycle used to be. some fuckers picked it up and loaded and ran. i had it covered and the fork locked. i have insurance that will cover it but what burns me inside is i dont know who did it. so to cut this shorter i want to know if someone out there could give me advice on what security cameras to buy. heres my idea. i can mount a camera in the kitchen window facing the parking lot that will record 24/7. it doesnt need to move, but will need night vision. i just want peace of mind for my car now and for all my roomates as well. so im wondering what are some good brand of cameras for this? im not looking to spend a whole lot im unemployed at the time. a couple of hundred would probably be my limit. so what would i want my setup be able to do? id like to be able to see a vehicle or person at approximately a hundred feet. maybe im overreacting with this idea. but i feel vulnerable. when your at a complex and all your vehicles are parked outside anyone can just come along and snatch them....

Is there a webcam out there that hooks up without a USB?

best wifi security camera outdoor image
Q. The USB plugs are broken on my laptop but i really want a webcam. Is there one out there that hooks up any other way?

Answer
Yes, there are webcams that connect to Ethernet, Serial Interface, Firewire (IEEE 1394), WiFi and USB.

This site has a list of cameras (designed for outdoor/security work) that host a variety of connection types. http://www.swellfinder.com/wind/webcam_en.htm

For more do a quick search for any of the above interface types followed by the word webcam. For instance I found that list of cameras searching for "Serial Interface Webcams" It was the first hit.

Now you say the USB Ports are broken... What happens when you connect something to a USB port? Does it attempt to read? Could be the wire disconnected internally.

Also could be a driver issue, http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com can usually search for drivers for you. Just choose CUSTOM and check the "Hardware" link on the left side when it's done searching. After all, it really would just be easier to have a working USB port for so many reasons... (External Hard-Drive, USB Key, Webcams, Digital Cams, Printers, Mice, Keyboards, Scanners etc.)

Need help finding outdoor home security cameras?

tnafan19

I prefer them to be:

1. Night Vision
2. Weatherproof
3. Wireless
4. Dome shaped
5. Outdoor (as mentioned above)

I also want a $200 price limit for each camera, but I realize that is probably near impossible for these characteristics. If there is a camera that is similar to these characteristics around the $200 price range please let me know. Thank you in advance

Answer
"Wireless" = video signal only.

The camera still needs a wire for power or a battery that gets recharged with a solar panel for overnight and very cloudy day use. When you have this solved, let us know and we can work through the camera selection. For $200 you will not find much. While we're here, where will the video be recorded? If it is an IP network based camera, you'll need a dedicated computer that does nothing but store the video. If it is an analog camera, then a dedicated network attached DVR. This is another expense that needs to be considered in your budget. In both cases, if the power goes out, if there is a requirement for the computer or the DVR (and the network) to remain working, a battery back up is needed. How much you spend on this will determine how long the systems stays up. You can easily spend $200 just on this back up battery for a few minutes of back up.

Swann and Lorex have good systems for residential installations. Pelco makes decent commercial gear. Battery back up systems from APS, CyberPower and several others will work. This small solar panel
http://www.solarpanelstore.com/solar-power.small-solar-panels.smallspssolarcollectors.solarland2012.info.1.html
can recharge a small battery
http://www.solarpanelstore.com/solar-power.batteries.powersonic.ps12550u.info.1.html
A metal enclosure for the battery is needed. The panel can double as weather protection for the battery and the camera.

As for the "wireless video" we don't know haw far away the receiver is going to be. Wifi and non-wifi wireless video signals have distance limitations so please take this into account in the system design. Walls, trees and other obstructions can also impact (reduce) the distance between the camera and receiver wireless video connection.

Until we know more about the system design, throwing out random suggestions for equipment is not useful for your implementation.

good security camera system for home?

vs2009

I have a budget of max $300 for a good security camera system to monitor my backyard and front of the house, any suggestions?

Answer
You may have trouble finding a reliable and working camera system for only $300. I might suggest saving up a little more to add to your budget if at all possible. Good wireless cameras are going to run $180-$400+ for each camera. The ones you can buy at Wal-Mart or whatever don't work very well and are more trouble than they're worth.

You should check out either SafeMart or Home Security Store. Home Security Store is more like a "home depot" for alarm system equipment.

Here's a good article on camera systems and a link to a review of SafeMart. Hope this helps.

business question "antique mall owner needing security camera system" which is the best to buy?

best security camera system small business image

Just trying to get input from someone that has an antique mall of similar business. I want to purchase a camera system that I can set up in "EACH" booth or atleast every other booth. Some can be dummies but I would like for atleast half of them to be the real deal. I ahve heard of dealers using globes and dummy cameras to deter thieves; does this work?
What system would you recommend and please don't say a 10,000 one, I cant afford that at the moment.

Answer
Hello

Dummy cameras are the worst possible they don't provide security and if someone is injured or claims to be injured in your store they can sue for providing a false sense of security. No professional security installer uses dummy cameras.

Here is a DVR that will work perfectly for you.

http://www.ascendentgroup.com/x4s.htm

I would recommend a Standalone DVR as they are more reliable and since they are linux based they are virus ans spy ware free.

The X4S Series DVR is an intelligent and professional CCTV management solution, integrating the latest technology and the most advanced features while maintaining a simple, intuitive, and graphical interface. The X4S Series DVR is a 24/7 turn key solution that meets demanding security needs to suit industrial and commercial applications. The X4S DVR is compatible with the X4 platform, allowing it to act as an IP server, while still remaining a standalone solution and allows you to view your cameras instantly over the internet with a PC or cell phone like the I-phone.

also here is some information on DVR and cameras you may want to read before buying a CCTV system.

Not all DVRs and security equipment are created equal, in fact there are many options that offer varying performance much like the automobile industry. In the world of DVRs you can find the equivalent of a $10,000 Kia and a $350,000 Ferrari and everything in between. Both have 4 wheels and windshield but that where the similarities end, itâs under the hood that counts. Just like any other consumer electronic in the end you get what you pay for.

I suggest you buy a PC based DVR has they have more processing power and normally have a much smaller file size and offer more features then Standalone DVR's. I know many people buy a cheap standalone DVR, only to upgrade to a PC based in 6 months especially when they are using it to manage a store remotely. Also PC based allows you to record up to 64 cameras where a standalone will have a limit of 16.

Many people have the misconception that a PC-Based DVR is simply an off-the-shelf PC with video capture (encoder) cards, display (decoder) cards and some generic OEM software. A true DVR requires years of research and development to facilitate the seamless integration of both the hardware and software. DVRs are highly complex systems that must run 24/7, processing millions of images per day. This makes consumer-level hardware inadequate for DVRs which is why Ascendent uses custom-built PCs with performance-level hardware.

My personal favorite DVR is Ascendent X4 series: Ascendentâs Tri-Fusion Hybrid Platform allows for the creation of a true hybrid surveillance system by utilizing the advantages of Analog, Megapixel, and IP technologies for unparalleled customization and expandability.

The X4 also uses the latest H.264/SVC codec offer video substantially better quality,. While its file size sizes is 30% smaller than MPEG-4, 60% smaller than MPEG-2, and exponentially smaller than MJPEG.

File size is crucial to streaming because most DVRâs on the market record at real time performance (30FPS per channel) so on a 4CH is trying to send 120, 8CH 240, and a 16CH 480 images per second which requires way too much bandwidth even for the most extreme internet connections.

The smaller the files size the more images are able to be sent, and the faster they can be processed improving both FPS and speed. File size is the heart of any DVR and goes far beyond just its streaming capabilities, as it also determines the recording storage time, how much you can back up at once, how fast it renders and searches video. The file size of a DVR impacts the performance of the DVR in just about every aspect from speed to longevity and is often the most important spec of any DVR.

If you are buying a DVR and streaming is a high priority I suggest you ask for a demo and connect to the DVR to make sure it is able to stream fast enough for your needs. Most DVRs say they have remote viewing but it is often too slow and laggy to be of any use especially if it is a standalone. Some good DVR brands that I recommend are Bosch, Pelco, Honeywell and Ascendent. These brands are what security professionals use.

I recommend Ascendent as they are less expensive because they cameras for companies like Bosch and Pelco and offer better performance but any of these 3 brands will work well.

These brand manufacturers also have a complete line of CCTV cameras and DVR for any application from residential to military and stand behind there warranties. You want to get a good bran name otherwise you will likely buy a product that work and cant be returned.

Answer
There are several camera systems like that at http://www.staffpatrol.com/store5/agora.cgi Staff Patrol also has many small recording devices that are not listed. Some of the smaller units are wireless and cost under $75. Some of the self-contained units are a bit more. They are in the security business and can adapt a solution that works for you and fits your budget. If you can't find what you need on the site, shoot them a note and you will get more advice. I would like to use my pc camera for a security camera of sorts while I'm on vacation. Maybe tak a picture every so often. (Motion sensor would be nice but I don't want to buy one.) Is there a way to set it to take a picture every hour or so?

Answer
If the PC will be left on, you'd have to hide it very well; otherwise it will be the first thing in the bag.

Webcam Timershot is a Microsoft XP PowerToy, that lets you take pictures at specified time intervals from a Webcam connected to your computer and save them to a location that you designate. This one would require a big hard drive.
OR-
Secure Cam is a motion detecting web cam surveillance software that can automatically capture a series of images whenever motion is detected in the monitored area. You can adjust the detection sensitivity, automatically archive captured still images and playback the images in sequence with the supplied viewer application. Secure Cam can monitor and display up to 99 cameras...etc.

I need help. I want to set up a wireless security camera in my business in the Philippines and view activity here in the United States. Can someone out there guide me on what I need? (e.g. cameras, software, computers, etc..) I want to set up at least 4-8 wireless camera throughout the building. I want something not too fancy and not to pricey.. Let me know?

Answer
Since you are going to have to supply power to your surveillance camera, you may as well hard wire it, since WiFi cameras can be hacked, so there goes your security.

Buy a moderately priced IP camera with good weatherproofing and securely attach it where no one can vandalize or steal it.

Then set up your server attached to the internet and open a port on your firewall to allow you to address the IP address from anywhere in the world .. You will want to password access to the camera

These guys have a pretty good price too. Also, I called, cause I found one camera with a better price, and they beat it for me. The thing you'll need to know is that you can't just buy a security camera, you'll need to buy a DVR or recording device that you can plug them into.

I've read that X10 cameras are not good in the dark, and that most wireless cameras can be hijacked by scanners, so other people might actually be watching you while you enjoy your yard! Protection One just gave me an estimate of $3,000 for 4 cameras! Any suggestions? I'm trying to catch vandals.

Answer
Hello

$500.00 is low and $3000 is high I would go with a budget $1500.00 depending if you want outdoor or indoor cameras.

if you need outdoor cameras make sure the camera is rated for the temperature variance your region is.

Not all CCTV equipment is created equal, in fact there are many options that offer varying performance much like the automobile industry. In the world of CCTV you can find the equivalent of a $2,000 golf cart and a $350,000 Ferrari and everything in between. Both have 4 wheels but that's where the similarities end, itâs under the hood that counts.

Just like any other consumer electronic in the end you get what you pay for. Most retailers and sellers make about a 40-80% profit margin, this is after costs like shipping and overhead. That means when you buy a product that costs $100.00 the manufacturer usually has only spent $30 to build it which simply means itâs not a good product and will probably have a working life of about 2 months. There is a reason these products are 1/10 of the price of good and reliable DVR brand names. The type of seller these products attract are online sellers (ebay) and will make profits margins as low as 2% which means they canât afford to offer good service or allow for RMAs (returns). Cheap products are like disposable razors they are NOT designed to last for a long time and you will end up replacing them every 2 months.

Now some products can be made cheaply like ipod cases, screen protectors, and other simple products with no moving parts or electronics. DVRs need to be good quality as they run 24/7 (20X more than the average electronic device) and process anywhere from 30-480 frames per second which in a year is over 15 billion images, and a good DVR should last 3-5 years.

A true DVR and camera require years of research and development to facilitate the seamless integration of both the hardware and software. DVRs are highly complex systems that must run 24/7, processing millions of images per day and are one of the few products that canât be made both well and cheaply. Cheap and inexpensive products like Q-see, X10, Swan, Lorex, and other low grade DVRâs and cameras sold by Tiger Direct, Newegg, radio shack Sams Club, are not used by any security professional and should only be used by hobbyists.

To be honest Swan sells complete Garbage and is not used by anyone who has worked with CCTV or security products. I know other manufactures who used the same product as them and they felt they wee such poor quality they offered money back and replaced them at there cost. They are poor quality especially for IR cameras, due to low quality material, low S/N ratio, and c grade CCD image chips. I don't know why "TheMan" recommended swan clearly he has no experience with CCTV products.

If you are only going to spend 70$ on cameras then you should buy 15 dummy cameras they will be just as effective and cheaper hen swan cameras.

Also as far as night vision or IR cameras go most do not give good images in the dark. Many companies claim good night vision but there are only a handful of brands who give night vision over 30 feet out doors. normally if a cameras is rated 150 feet of IR it will give you ok images at 30 feet at night and good images at about 20 if rated for 60 feet you might get 15 indoors and will be useless outdoors.

Some good CCTV brands that I recommend are Bosch, Pelco, Honeywell and Ascendent.

http://www.ascendentgroup.com (Great IR cameras)
www.honeywell.com
www.pelco.com/
http://www.bosch.com

Economical DVR's
Two good economical DVRs I would recommend are Ascendent's AVP-4120 DVR or Pelco's DX-400. They will allow you to view all your cameras instantly from anywhere in the world using either IE, or a client software. The AVP-4120 uses the latest H.264 codec to improve streaming and recording time, and will allow PCs and Apple computers to remotely view cameras. These are the DVRs I would recommend that are good quality and affordable from companies who stand behind there products.

Again if you are going to buy Swan products save money and get dummy cameras they are just as affective and you will be less disappointed.

Hope this Helps,

What is a good home security camera system?

Gary

I am looking for an home security camera sytem that I could link with my tv on it's own channel.

Any suggestions?
Trying to stay below $400, I could do any wiring myself. I live in South Florida so it gets to be around 90 degrees on average. Just a standard resolution in color. Night vision would be a big plus but not needed. If it could be directed to the video input on a receiver that could work also. Would want it to store recordings.

Answer
Analog, composite video? There are lots.

On its own channel? Some RF modulators can be expensive, especially if you want to select the channel. Easier if you just use one of the other video inputs that are not in use.

What is your budget?
What resolution are you looking for?
Will the video need to be recorded and stored? If yes, what surveillance DVR are you looking at?
Only one camera?
Is night vision required? If yes, how far does the camera need to see in darkness?
Does the camera need to be outdoor rated?
Does it snow where you live? If yes, you may need a housing with a heater unit.
Does it get REALLY hot where you live? If yes, you might need a housing with a cooling system.
Is the video signal to be wired or wireless?
Is there power available where you plan to install the camera?
Is the camera going to stay in one position or is pan/tilt/zoom control required?

You have not provided enough information for anyone to provide you a good recommendation.

Can a business LEGALLY use security cameras anyway they see fit?

best security cameras business on SECURITY CAMERAS INSTALLATION FORT LAUDERDALE,VIDEO SURVEILLANCE
best security cameras business image

Dino

I work for a company that has installed security cameras throughout the building and surrounding areas. I was wondering if legally they can use these cameras for their any objective.

Answer
Well, there are some limitations about how a business can use a security camera. The security cameras cannot be used in a bathroom, dressing room, or a break room. The security camera cannot be used to obtain private medical records. The video footage of employees cannot be used in commercials without the employee's approval. If the state has laws against recording audio without a person's permission, then the camera would not be allowed to record audio. This depends on the state you're in. Generally, the business is allowed to use the security camera to prevent theft, ensure worker productivity, and ensure that safety procedures are being implemented on the job (if applicable).

Do security cameras still work during a power outage?

nickelback

I was wondering if security cameras still work during a power outage, or are they connected to a different power source? I understand that some businesses might use generators, but what about homeowners?

Answer
Maybe. They can be on battery power, like UPSs for computers and the like. But they may not be.

I am shopping around for a good home security system that isn't super expensive and works wirelessly as we do not have a landline. So far, all of the reviews I have read for the top two companies (ADT and Protect America) sound like horror stories of fraud and faulty equipment. I just don't want to get ripped off!

Answer
Good system is taking a good look at your residence
1. windows locked. Can they be
2. Are there good locks on the doors (make sure all keys are accounted for, if not,
NO EXCEPTIONS.replace the locks)
3. lights outside the doors (a well lit place at night is not a place robbers will hit first)
4. make sure there are no windows that are not easily seen (prevents people form getting in without being seen)
5. Know the people allowed in your home (robbers taking a chance at a good house to rob or were they informed)
6. take a good look at your neighbors. Make sure you take a moment to know them. They are the ones near your residence. It is always wise to at least have a good presences of who they are

and a few other suggestions
Make sure you are insured. It is not that expensive...and if anything is stolen. It will be worth it

i do not know the name of it but there are plenty of websites that will help you set up different
live cameras form your house (Inside and out). you can go on line and with a pass word you can check your home thru the cameras you set up. (Not to mention nothing is better for the police then a video of the crime)

good luck with it :)

What decent paying jobs have to do with computers/technology?

Sanjay

Hello, i'm a junior in high school , my gpa is somewhere between an 83 and an 86 (im not sure at the moment =p) and am interested in two fields of jobs. One being computers/technology, one being pharmacy. But if possible i would more enjoy a job in computers and technology seeing pharmacy requires a lot of school. What are some jobs that pay decent that have to do with building computers, or possibly overseeing a system of computers or anything of the sort?

Answer
If you have a 4 year college degree in an IT major like Computer Science (oriented towards math and Programming) or a Computer Infomation Systems (oriented toward more general IT studies with less math and Programming) here are some of the non-Programming jobs you could do:

Service Center Coordinator - Schedules the repair of user community computers, orders spare parts, schedules staff, establishes priorities, maintains loaner laptops and non-US laptops for travel outside of US.

Responsible for Security group creation and memberships, server patching, anti-virus protection updates, password changes and any automated mechanisms that make these changes. These positions may be divided into server and desktop teams. Tier 2 support.
Enterprise Administrator - Handles Enterprise support and design issues. Tier 3 support.
Active Directory Administrator - Designs and administers Active Directory infrastructure, AD policies, access permissions, roles, group policies, separation of duties.
Exchange and Messaging Administrator - maintains mail systems servers, other mail related devices and the company messaging infrastructure.

Plans for failover of services to alternate locations, if the primary location is not available.
Database Administrator - Maintains the company databases which may include customer and sales records, billing information, inventory and other data.
Computing Security Specialist - A company's biggest asset is its data and the Computing Security Specialist will work to try to keep that data protected from loss. They may be dealing with and defending against viruses, hoaxes, malware, keyloggers, phishing attacks, internal attacks and domestic and foreign intrusion. Develops monitoring and interception systems, filters and strategies and works with appropriate government agencies.
Ethical Hacker â performs intrusion and vulnerability testing of systems. Works with Computing Security to insure intrusion prevention systems are working correctly.
Corporate IT Acquisition Specialist - Works with acquired outside companies to establish migration into the corporate computing infrastructure.
Data Center Administrator - Maintains the data center facilities where the company's servers and other devices reside. They are responsible for physical security and may review badge reader and camera information to be sure that only individuals with proper access are getting close to the company's servers and other critical devices. Also, maintain backup power devices (UPS or generators).

In a small business the list of jobs above might be performed by one or two people doing all these jobs. In a large Enterprise environment this could be hundreds of people.

Best wishes!

I need a good surveillance system- 16 cameras, that's hooked up to two monitors showing two different views?

best 16 camera security system on Surveillance Cameras, Affordable Security Camera Systems
best 16 camera security system image

I need someone's help finding the right surveillance system. It should have 12-16 cameras, about 500tvl or better cameras. A DVR system that is digitally watermarked. And it should be able to display 8 views on one monitor, and 16 views on the other. This is for a business. Please help if you're educated in this field. Thank you!

Answer
Hello

I am working on government projects and use Ascendent cameras and DVR because the offer superior performance and cost less then comparable brands like bosh, Honeywell and pelco.

I recommend Ascendent as they are cheaper then bosch and pelco and offer better performance but any of these 3 brands will work well.

Also Ascendent has live chat on there website and can help you design a system.

Where can I get a good security system for my estate?

I have a large home in Florida so I need a system that will be fine with the unusal weather. Some will be outdoor cameras and others indoor. A total of about 16 cameras. What else do I need and where can I find it?

Answer
I bought a 16ch DVR kit from www.cctvdirectbuy.com a few months ago and it is working GREAT! The picture quality is clear, the software is user-friendly, and it even helped me catch a thief who tried breaking into our house! The kit I purchased included the DVR, hard drive, cameras, cables, and power supply, so all I needed to do was connect any monitor to the DVR. Just go to their website and they have a lot of different DVR kits to choose from.

I'm looking for inspirational crafting, home decor, and/or fashion magazines that will ship to the USA. I found a magazine called Frankie, but it's only available in Australia as far as I could see. Google searches didn't bring up anything that fit what I need. The magazines I do NOT want: sewing, crocheting, knitting, embroidery, quilting.

I plan on reading these magazines and cutting them up after I've finished them, all to add these inspirational images and articles to an inspiration board, and turn the remainder into envelopes for snail mail.

Please help?

Should I get the Samsung Galaxy S4 or stick with my iPhone 5?

Ashley

I've had been an avid Apple user my whole life. But ever since Jobs died, I've been losing more and more interest in Apple and their products. In the past 2-3 years, they have barely done anything new and interesting with their products. The announcement of the 5S and 5C is ridiculous and shameful to them as a company. They are years behind of their "innovating" products.

With all of that said, I have been using an iPhone since the first one came out and have been upgrading to the new one every time it comes out. After this recent announcement, I've just lost all interest in their products.

I have been looking at the Galaxy S4 for a while now and have been doing extensive research as in watching YouTube video comparisons against the iPhone, user reviews on Amazon, articles, and bench tests. (All comparing with the iPhone 5).

I'm fed up with being unable to customize and personalize my iPhone 5 and how small the screen is as well as always having to buy a case for it because it is so thin. The software is so out of date and even with iOS 7, nothing has changed. I also don't want to jailbreak my phone because of security issues as well as bugs in the jailbreak software.

TL;DR Now here is my question: are there any iPhone 5 users out there that have recently switched to the galaxy S4 and love it more than their old iPhone 5? And can you give specific examples?

Answer
Actually the 5S has a lot of improvements that effectively future proofed it for 2 years according to analysts, specifically the 64-bit processor. Also the fingerprint scanner & its implementation is seen as a major step forward in mainstreaming biometric security, also not mention the new M7 processor that will work alongside that A7 64-bit processor to improve performance & the True Tone dual LED for the camera.

Apple again did some innovating there with that phone & the results show with the usual long lines throughout the world at Apple & carrier stores.

So I honestly don't see how the 5S or 5C are "ridiculous" or "shameful".

The Galaxy S4 has been lauded for several things
-the same cheap plastic design
-packed with 8GB of features that most only use 10% of (if so much)
-recently caught purposely boosting benchmark scores in order to look better vs the competition

Many, in fact, no one has complained that the iPhones being thin as a problem. No one really wants to walk with thick bricks these days.

Oh & as far as iOS 7 it also took some under the hood advancements that will show for years to come. Being heralded since it debuted on Wednesday.

If it was me, 5S easily over Galaxy S4, if only for the phone's features, iOS 7's enhancements & the phone's performance over the S4.

Is it legal to set up a vandalism sting in my driveway?

best security camera position on Security Camera Installation
best security camera position image

Anonymous

I live in Florida in a predominantly black neighborhood.

If I park my car on my driveway (close to the street) with a sign on the back reading "Hooray Zimmerman is NOT guilty!"

and position a security camera so it can see anyone near my car

Am I able to legally claim damages against someone who vandalizes my car if I have video evidence?

Answer
Yes you can set up a sting operation.
Why not just apprehend the suspects yourself and see just how tough you really are?

In the Department of Corrections, whose job is it to monitor the security cameras and open/close the doors?

Jay

I took a tour of a detention center sometime ago here in Maryland, and apparently there's a guy in a control tower that looks at all the security cameras... deciding when to open doors for people. What's that guy's job title?

Answer
He is just a regular corrections officer just like the rest of them in the control room who can see everything with cameras. They just rotate that certain position.
