Not all DVRs are created equal, in fact there are many options that offer varying performance much like the automobile industry. In the world of DVRs you can find the equivalent of a $10,000 Kia and a $350,000 Ferrari and everything in between. Both have 4 wheels and windshield but that where the similarities end, itâs under the hood that counts. Just like any other consumer electronic in the end you get what you pay for.

I suggest you buy a PC based DVR has they have more processing power and normally have a much smaller file size and offer more features then Standalone DVR's. I know many people buy a cheap standalone DVR, only to upgrade to a PC based in 6 months especially when they are using it to manage a store remotely. Also PC based allows you to record up to 64 cameras where a standalone will have a limit of 16.

Many people have the misconception that a PC-Based DVR is simply an off-the-shelf PC with video capture (encoder) cards, display (decoder) cards and some generic OEM software. A true DVR requires years of research and development to facilitate the seamless integration of both the hardware and software. DVRs are highly complex systems that must run 24/7, processing millions of images per day. This makes consumer-level hardware inadequate for DVRs which is why Ascendent uses custom-built PCs with performance-level hardware.

Some good DVR brands that I recommend are Bosch, Pelco, Honeywell and Ascendent. These brands are what security professionals use, Q-see, Swan and Lorex are only used in residential applications because they are sold by Tiger Direct, Spytown, Newegg, Sams Club, Costco and other retail outlets but are not used by any security professionals also their tech support rarely speaks English as their first language...

These brand manufacturers also have a complete line of CCTV cameras for any application from residential to military.

In the civilian world here are just a few of the careers below that could translate to. Remember you would need a 4 year degree on top of your military experience but with those two things you could be pretty marketable.

Computer Technician - Works on computer hardware at user location or in service center. (entry level IT Job)

How do I start a new iPad without installing iTunes or sync'ing with a PC?

I just got an iPad for free (wouldn't have bought one with all the limitations), and the screen is stuck on asking to install itunes and sync. with my computer. I do NOT want to install any iTunes or iCrap on my computer. How do I bypass this ?

you're out of luck. my brother-in-law works at Apple, and even at Apple they don't allow staff to talk about bugs, issues and customer complaints about the ipad. I've seen people online taking it to the apple store to activate it.

anyway, you might want to read reviews about it, and decide if it makes sense to keep it or return it. my husband got one for me a few months ago, and we returned it (with a restocking fee) because it was more like a toy for kids who never had a real computer. it is more for browsing certain sites, but not youtube or others with Flash unless you accept their "sterilized" apps from their store. I spite of great marketing hype, here are a few things that you should know about the ipad:

- you cannot print anything from it. period. not even your e-ticket confirmation. plain dumb !
- no real multitasking, even their "fix" is not a real multitasking, but good enough for the masses
- you cannot watch Flash-enabled sites. this includes numerous e-learning sites and most video and games on the Internet.
- problematic WiFi support. Apple did it again, even with their wireless access point. Don't expect to use that in a hotel with WiFi. At least 2/3 don't work with there!
- impossible to synchronize to a PC that does not have an Intel chip. good luck on that one, since you MUST at least synchronize it once, as you just noticed ! ;-)

and now the obvious that you might have overlooked:
- no camera,
- no USB ports,
- no easy way to organize a file system and transfer/copy,
- no easy way to print your files, no interaction with office productivity software (Office),
- on-screen keyboard is not practical, if you need to type a bit, use a REAL laptop
- screen resolution is 4:3 so you see movies with huge black bars,
- there is no HDMI out so you can't connect it to your new LCD,
- no SD or other card readers for your photos,
- screen is glossy so you can't read on it outdoors,
- ridiculously low storage space (even netbooks have over 200gb now)
- very fragile and slippery in your hands (one drop could kill the screen)
- much pricier than alternative tablets like Archos with way more features and openness
- you cannot change the browser for a better one. remember Apple is a closed system
- expensive data plans if you use 3G
- no support for email attachments. feels like back in the 1990's.
- to watch movies from your PC, you have to download a video converter, or buy them from iTunes
- Air Video (which enables you to watch videos you have loaded into iTunes) only works with a few routers, and notably not with any AT&T Routers at all
- no tethering to anything
- no common laptop/netboook features: security software, voice recorder, or calculator
- extraordinarily fragile device, do not drop it on your carpet, it WILL break.
- heavier than you think. You won't be able to hold it in your hand for long.
- cannot rest flat on a table or your lap, you will block the WiFi antenna behind the Apple logo and weaken your WiFi signal.

And finally, to do anything you need on the iPad, you still need to connect it regularly to a PC or a Mac. You have to connect in order to sync up your latest podcasts and media files. You need to sync to get OS updates. You need to sync in order to get your latest business documents on the iPad.

Now you can make your own informed decision about keeping that iPad or not... Good luck!

One easy solution would be to purchase something like a Linksys internet video camera (linked below) that you can find in many stores or online and runs about $90-$100. Give it power, plug it into your router, and you can access the feed when not at home.

There are other similar products on the market.

If your goal is to use an existing webcam setup, that would be a little more complicated.

I have 8 security cameras running through an IP system, all the apps I can find for my iPad and iPhone only support 4 cameras viewing at once, it would be preferable to see them all at once so you can see everything infront of your eyes. Does anyone know a solution to veiw them all at once on my iPad or iPhone. (need an answer quick!)

IP cameras have up to a 5X larger file size then analog cameras. (at same resolution) I have seen MP cameras that on 2MP resolution are over 300X (%3000) larger then our X3 DVR on a CIF image. This is an extreme case but generally speaking IP cameras have a much larger file size.

Most routers and switches are not designed to handle IP cameras they have enough bandwidth but they are not able to process the amounts of commands. (9 IP cameras 30FP is 230 instructions per second) standard routers have enough bandwidth (up to 1GB) but cant handle the amount of tasks (instructions) so frames get dropped latency is introduced and the effectiveness of other devices such as POS, printers and dats storage can be affected and compromised.


Donât get me wrong there are some brutal analog cameras and DVR out there but If you see a good D1 resolution image such as Ascendents Hardware compressed you will not be so quick to join the IP bandwagon.

IP is a young and emerging technology and I have no doubt that in the future it will outperform analog cameras but its not a mature technology yet. Once we start to get standard IP platforms, get rid of license feesâ and existing networks have larger bandwidths then IP video will be a good solution, but until then analog is the way to go.

Make sure you get good cameras as well, Ascendent has the best IR outdoor cameras on the market and are about %50 less then Bosch while offering triple the distance.

I want to make a surveillance system so that I am able to have a camera or two at my house and one or two at my office (about 1 mile away). They need to be able to see at night and perform well outside as thats where the majority of them will be.

Start with a budget. Is this worth $1,000, $5,000 or more to you?

Also, since you don't seem to have any specific data network or security camera experience, you might consider hiring this out or contacting a reputable security company to do the work for you.

Being a mile apart tells me you will need two different systems. One home, one office. The biggest reason is the two different local area networks (LAN) used that will connect to the internet.

There are essentially two ways to do this.

1) Analog cameras connect to a DVR, the DVR connects to the LAN.
In this scenario, there are two options. One has the DVR being accessed remotely so there are data network security and segmentation issues to deal with otherwise the video data could easily overwhelm a poorly designed network. The other has the video being sent to a "service" - most of the manufacturers have this - and to see what your cameras see, you log into their network.

2) IP network based cameras are on a LAN. The camera views are accessed remotely so there are data network security and segmentation issues to deal with otherwise the video data could easily overwhelm a poorly designed network. If video is to be stored, then add in a computer of appropriate horsepower and hard drive size to store the video.

In all cases, be sure to add a battery back up system that powers the cameras, DVR, router, hubs switches, computer and whatever else is associated with the security camera system. It would be silly to have a "power outage" cause a security camera outage.

Cameras rated for outdoors, with night vision (infrared emitters) will cost a little more than small indoor type cameras. At the consumer grade level for analog cameras (that connect to a DVR), plan to spend at least $150 per camera. Lorex and Swann make decent ones. If you need "vandal resistant" or decide to go with IP based cameras, expect to spend around $2,000 per camera. Pelco makes good ones. If Pan-Tilt-Zoom functionality is required, the camera price increases to around $3,000.

The DVRs at the consumer level start at about $400 for a decent 4-channel system. You may need to add a hard disc drive if the one included is not large enough. An 8 or 9-channel DVR weighs in at around $650. A good Pelco DVR will be in the $5,000 range.

There are several more permutations, but the gist of this explanation is that your simple question does not necessarily have a simple answer.

I've been searching the net trying to find the perfect hidden camera to monitor the front of my house. There's been burglaries in the neighborhood and just the other day some bastard busted up my car window and stole my speakers and amp.

Just so I can have some piece of mind, I'd like to look into a security/surveilance camera. I want something that can be hidden and doesn't look like a camera. I'd love to find something I could put in a potted plant out front, or something like that. The best thing I've found so far is a Flood Light that's a Hidden Camera, but it's non-functional and I have to have some kind of lighting in my driveway so that's not practical for me.

There are a lot of wireless/nanny cameras out on the market now, but you are probably going to need a night time/low light camera if lighting is not practical in your driveway. Then you will also need to decide how you want to store your video either on a PC or VCR.

The other thing to consider with wireless cameras would be picture quality, so a wired camera might be a better option for you if there is any wireless interference. smarthome.com has a variety of brands but aer usually more expensive. x10 that has a pretty cheap wired camera that is black and white which performs better at night and it plugs right into a vcr

My uncle just recently installed a security camera in front of the house. I share a room with his daughter/my cousin. Today, like lately, we've been keeping the window open. Our room is the only room that has its window facing the front of the house. Is it possible that since the window is open, he can hear our conversations clearly even though I mumbled what I didn't want to be heard?

As long as he's off your property with the camera, your neighbors can film anything in view, even strait through your windows. This can even film you from the street if they wanted. They only have to remain off your property in order to do this without your consent. I would suggest shutting your curtains or blinds to keep your naked butt from showing up on voyeur porn sites.

You have the same rights as your neighbors. Feel free to set up a camera right at the edge of your property line, pointed strait at your neighbor's window.

Sorry fairly long, but I do need advise. First, I want to tell you is the building sits in a residential neighborhood but it is commercial zone; it in the middle of the second block off a major highway and there is mix of residential and commercial properties in the two blocks. But most of the commercial properties face the highway. My building doesn't face the highway it is actually the last building before the zoning change. The other commercial buildings on my block are: next to mine is blight building (working on getting it torn down) and the other is the rear part of a motel. So there isn't a lot of foot traffic on the street during the day. My husband and I bought this building at an auction for little of nothing. Since the building is a double we figure we can lease one part and use the other part as a showroom for his construction business. Now, at the time of purchase the neighborhood was a quite neighborhood with little to no problems despite the motel. However, in the last year we have notice a lot more police presents. ( I want to mention we do live a block from the building) The motel have been attracting more criminals and more problems. The police have blocked streets off and have conducted searches for criminals (by foot and car) about 4 times since February of 2011 that we have notice. This activity usually take place at night, after business hours; however, that doesn't give me any comfort. My problem is the motel sits behind my building and as it stands now I will be in the showroom by myself 98% of the time. Keep in mind the street doesn't have a lot foot traffic during the day but do have car traffic. It makes me nervous to think I will be by myself in a business where people can come and go openly. I don't want criminals to get any ideas. So, I need suggestions on how to become less attractive to criminals. My husband would like to start the business slow and build a clientele by having only his clients and walk-ins to begin with. His clients I don't mind but walk-ins is the problem. My ideas: 1) To hire one or two people on commission bases 2) appointments only 3) appointments only with employees on a commission base only - to start with 3) of course cameras 4) have a buzz door to let people in 5) get a dog. Please, give me some suggestions on what to do with this situation. (I do know if we hire employees my husband slow build up clientele plan would not work) with that do the commission base employees bring in their own business or do we bring to them? I have thought about home security and here are is the conversation I have to myself about it all:

A home alarm system is for when people break into your house and even though it will notify you and the police that someone has broken in the bad guys still have plenty of time to make off with your stuff. In the end you can get your home insurance to replace most of the stuff and any home repairs but it will be difficult for the police to catch the criminals.

Why not check out a home surviellance system instead? With actual cameras around your property you can literally catch any one in the act if you have the cameras positioned around the exterior of the house. Video is a lot more likely to catch a criminal than just hoping they get caught selling your computer. Even with the cameras in plain site they act as a deterant more so than the little sign on the window saying ADT protects my house. The other thing to think of is the monthly fee for a security system whereas a surveillance system is a one-time fee.

I linked to a home package that I am considering that contains everything you need to get up and running out of the box. It has 4 outdoor rated cameras, a 1TB DVR for recording up to a month of video, the ability to check the feed from my smartphone and all the cables and power supplies needed hook everything up. I suggest you buy a PC based DVR has they have more processing power and normally have a much smaller file size and offer more features then Standalone DVR's. I know many people buy a cheap standalone DVR, only to upgrade to a PC based in 6 months especially when they are using it to manage a store remotely. Also PC based allows you to record up to 64 cameras where a standalone will have a limit of 16.

Many people have the misconception that a PC-Based DVR is simply an off-the-shelf PC with video capture (encoder) cards, display (decoder) cards and some generic OEM software. A true DVR requires years of research and development to facilitate the seamless integration of both the hardware and software. DVRs are highly complex systems that must run 24/7, processing millions of images per day. Since you wrote that that man is sending her money then obviously he's a gentleman because Indians don't spend money that easily even if they want a green card. Also Indians do not divorce their wives, it is a life-long commitment for them. My own daughter has married an Indian man and they are staying in Bombay which is a very developed state that is better than even NY. If you are uncertain about this guy you can ask your daughter to get photocopies of his passport or driver's license. These are the biggest proofs of identity in India,much like a US social security card. If he is an educated man than he is not after a green card. All Indians who immigrate legally and illegally are under graduate educated persons.
You mentioned a fiance visa; they will have to meet in person and have photographs taken in order to show it to the consulate. For him to get a US visa it would be difficult. After 9/11 the US tightened their rules considering this and if he were to be rejected he wouldn't be able to travel to any country for up to 10 years. I wanted to do this last summer, when we had a drug dealer doing deals right outside my kitchen window. Luckily he is gone now. But I would still like to place security camera around my apartment to record any other illegal acts, such as vandalism. My main concern is invading the privacy of someone that is not doing anything wrong. My landlord already has the main entrances to our building covered, but I would like to watch out for the common areas, such as wehre the drug deals took place.

And when you are using the internet to connect multiple sites together analog transmits over the internet faster with less latency using less bandwidth allowing you not only to view and monitor a situation real time but also effective control PTZ cameras.

What is the Advantage of IP?
Many of the so called advantages of IP simply don't hold water in the real world, IP is mainly Hype and marketing and outside of a few niche applications such as 1 or 2 camera installs, where MP cameras are needed or large scale wireless projects which represent about 2% of the total CCTV market, IP has very few advantages compared to analog based on performance, cost and reliability. (yet all companies touting IP will often use MP cameras to demonstrate the advantages of IP)

IP video is more about marketing then it is about performance as larger companies like Bosch pelco Honeywell axis can change for both hardware and software and once you use there cameras you have to keep using there cameras unlike analog.

Also IP sounds great, plug and play, Better image quality, use existing infrastructure, who wouldnât want that unfortunately this is often not the case.

IP cameras are based on CMOS
Analog cameras are based on CCD (usually)

A CMOS sensor is constructed using a array of pixels, but unlike CCDâs CMOS do not have a capacitor to store the charge for each pixel.The rows of pixels are activated sequentially rather then individually

In short unless you have perfect lighting a good CCD camera will outperform an equivalent CMOS camera.

File Size:
The smaller the files size the more images that are able to be sent and the faster they can be processed improving both FPS and speed. File size is the heart of any DVR and goes far beyond just its streaming capabilities as it also determines the recoding storage time, how much you can back up at once, how fast it renders and searches video.

IP cameras have up to a 5X larger file size then analog cameras. (at same resolution) I have seen MP cameras that on 2MP resolution are over 300X (%3000) larger then our X3 DVR on a CIF image. This is an extreme case but generally speaking IP cameras have a much larger file size.

Most routers and switches are not designed to handle IP cameras they have enough bandwidth but they are not able to process the amounts of commands. (9 IP cameras 30FP is 230 instructions per second) standard routers have enough bandwidth (up to 1GB) but cant handle the amount of tasks (instructions) so frames get dropped latency is introduced and the effectiveness of other devices such as POS, printers and dats storage can be affected and compromised.


Donât get me wrong there are some brutal analog cameras and DVR out there but If you see a good D1 resolution image such as Ascendents Hardware compressed you will not be so quick to join the IP bandwagon.

IP is a young and emerging technology and I have no doubt that in the future it will outperform analog cameras but its not a mature technology yet. Once we start to get standard IP platforms, get rid of license feesâ and existing networks have larger bandwidths then IP video will be a good solution, but until then analog is the way to go.

Make sure you get good cameras as well, Ascendent has the best IR outdoor cameras on the market and are about %50 less then Bosch while offering triple the distance.
