There are lots of consumer DVR CCTV camera systems and most of them come from the same blueprints and lousy software and cheap hardware.
What does ADT use when they install a security system with CCTV cameras?

Answer
youll find a better answer here..

ive used adt dvr's and the layout is really nice and user friendly compared to ones youll get for cheap online.

How can I improve my prologue for a sci-fi story?

Parker G.

I started a new story a couple weeks ago, and I'm kind of worried about info dump in the beginning of it. Does it seem like I'm giving too much information in the prologue? Any other suggestions for improvement would also be appreciated.

Prologue

10 minutes ago. 12:39 AM

Rok 9Q silently climbed up the wall of the brick building, his custom-made gloves and boots giving him the extra traction he needed to help keep his grip. He counted the floors silently as he passed them, numbering them in twelve different languages for practice. Once heâd reached the eighteenth floor, he stopped and considered how to open the window.
The microscopic scanners implanted in his brain silently fed him data, which seemed to flow across his eyes like he was reading a book. They told him that the window was made of simple glass in a wooden frame and lacked all of the complicated security systems found on most houses. Satisfied, he merely spent a moment jarring the window upwards before the lock snapped and he was able to lift it freely.
He opened the window just wide enough for him to crawl through, then silently stood inside and took in his surroundings. As he memorized the layout of the room, marking all exits and entrances, he mentally commanded all of the transmitters and scanners in his brain to shut down. At this point he didnât want any unnecessary information distracting him from the task at hand.
Unfortunately, even the infrared vision might divert his attention elsewhere if he kept it on. Some homes had security in place which could give off counterfeit heat signatures that resembled a human in every way, so any intruder in the home would mistakenly targeted the replica while the security company alerted the true resident of the trespasser.
With the NOUS currently in a non-active state, Rok 9Q was completely on his own. He no longer received threat assessment and analysis, as well as data construction of the building. It also meant that he was no longer able to send or receive communications from Base, and they couldnât tap into his mind to spy on him. To them, he was completely off the grid. He could do whatever he wanted, and no one would ever know. But he had a mission to complete, and nothing was going to sidetrack him from that tonight.
He could make out three doors in the room in which he had entered. The one on the opposite side of the window likely led to the hallway of the apartment building. He noted it as a possible exit route after the mission was completed. The adjacent was to where he was standing had two doors. The door farthest from him clearly led to a kitchen; there was an opening in the wall near it that displayed an oven and microwave. If he walked closer for a different angle he knew he would see a refrigerator and freezer somewhere in it too.
That left only one room. He sneaked over to it and put his ear to the door to see if it was in fact the room he was looking for. He heard faint breathing, but wasnât fully convinced. Breathing could be faked just like anything else.
He slowly turned the doorknob and stepped into the room. There was a woman sleeping on a bed, so he took out his picture and held it up for comparison. The photo was of a frowning woman staring resolutely at the camera. She had shoulder-length hair dyed a dark green color and light blue eyes. Easy enough to recognize.
He crept forward until he was kneeling across from where she was laying and held the photo up to her face. If he had his tech on, his facial recognition program could bring up her name almost instantly, but at this point it was faster to simply do the photo comparison. Yes, it was definitely her.
He withdrew his service pistol from an ankle holster and held it close to her head.
Suddenly her eyes snapped open and stared up at him from the pillow. Surprised, Rok 9Q reacted instincively. He pressed the gun into her temple and whispered, âDonât make a sound, or I kill you right now.â
She squinted at him a moment, then recognition flashed in her eyes. âYouâre one of those clones, arenât you?â
âYes.â
He should have left it at that, should have just killed her in that moment, but he didnât. And thatâs what led to his downfall.

Answer
Ok, I'll put in my two cents:

The good: I love the uniqueness of the story and the detail you provide throughout. Rok 9Q seems very programmed and methodical about everything he does. I assume his character will grow to include more personality throughout. The setting is also interesting as it combines both futuristic and contemporary elements.

About the info dump: You are perhaps a tad too detailed at times. If you're worried about readers gaining a mental image of your setting, don't be. Only give us enough information that's needed. With that being said, I'm being picky. I enjoy the detail given. My only suggestions: limit the paragraph where he is analyzing each room- he's already done that briefly in the paragraph before. Also, I'm not sure how I feel about telling the reader that his downfall is coming. I would probably be a tad more subtle with the foreshadowing.

Again, this is just my opinion. I think your story is off to a good start. Keep it up!

What computer should I get a mac or a PC?

Tyler P

Im going into college for the first time and need a new computer. I got about $1,200 of grad money that ive saved for a new computer. I want a computer thats fast, good against viruses, sleek and has like student applications like word and powerpoint type things. Is it worth the money to get a mac? Should i go for a PC and buy a TV as well? Im torn. sombody help me.

Answer
I would get a PC and save you money.. Not worth getting the Mac.. read below..

PC=Variety of specs, options, quality, prices, vendors, support
Mac=One vendor, limited options, still more expensive. Look below for more information..

Today, Macs use a subset of PC hardware. Why spend extra to get the same CPU chips, graphics cards and OS X isn't as secure as you think..

Don't believe the lies that Macs are better than PCs at graphics/animation.. Dreamworks Animation http://www.dreamworksanimation.com/ under studio click on Technology of Animation, an independent film maker I know uses PCs, a graphic artist I used to know uses PCs also.

A number of PCs can also run OS X (Mac OS) http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=os+x+on+pc&btnG=Google+Search&aq=0&oq=os+x+on+ as well just that Apple makes it illegal in order to get Market share.. The reason why Mac can run native Windows is because it is using a subset of PC hardware,

If you decide to buy a Mac for running Windows, you will still have to get the same virus/spyware protection, and run into the same issues as a regular PC.

Now is a Mac worth buying for OS X?

I say: NO... for the following reasons...

ADVANTAGES WINDOWS :
Aprox 90% of the market is Windows and most PCs have windows already pre-installed.
1) Some websites require Internet Explorer, to run IE on Mac you really get ies4osx which is the Windows version of IE running really buggy and illegal if you don't have a legitimate copy of Windows.
2) Supports more devices (printers and other things you hook into the computer).
3) More business software/games
4) Want the dock on OS X (Mac)? google/yahoo rocketdock, objectdoc.
5) Used by businesses.

ADVANTAGES LINUX :
1) FREE (most versions are)
2) Install software by either 1) Synaptic Package Manager, 2) Add/Remove 3) Opening a .deb or .rpm file (depending on distribution)
2) Like the Mac OS X effects? go yahoo/google COMPIZ FUSION which can do any cool effect a Mac can do and many ore....

3) Mac OS X Doc? google/yahoo Avant Window Navigator.Cairo Dock, http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x3rf5q_cairo-dock-mac-os-x-leopard-dock-on_tech
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p0hzi22g2DE
4) It is FASTER/MORE SECURE to surf on the internet
5) Some Windows programs work with Wnehq/Crossover (also avail on Mac, but why pay $$$)

SECURITY
Mac OS X was hacked in 2006 less than 30 minutes, and within 2 minutes in a contest in 2008, and within 10 seconds in 2009. In 2008, Linux and Vista were not hacked until another day when restrictions were lowered. Vista was next, and then Linux. In 2009 Windows 7 fell shortly after the Mac but Linux was unscathed.
Macs are standardized with Cameras, if your Mac gets hacked, the hacker can turn on your camera with more ease.
Please Note: All OS's have vulnerabilities.

VIRUSES
Mac OS X has viruses (and significantly on the rise), a friend of mine has a virused Mac. As more users use Macs, more viruses will come out for it. Especially when users think "they are safe".

QUALITY/PROBLEMS
Contrary to belief, Macs are not better quality. Apple also has been changing suppliers to try to "lower the price" and thus lowering quality. Even with the lower prices, Macs still cost more, they spend a higher percent of budget trying to make it look pretty, and marketing.

Sample of problems: Overheating Macbooks, OS X- not responding to keyboard, some units with 16bit screens, etc. Apple statistics are misleading since Mac users with problem machines are more likely to go out and buy a new computer than PC users. Apple is lowering prices which means you can expect lower quality than in the past. Apple had switched the manufacturers producing parts. OS X also has problems slowing down.

Repairs are more expensive than PCs since the IMac, Mac Mini are compact units, and Apple charges a premium for their services. Some repairs can be done by another repair service but the compact design of the computer causes problems.
With an IMac, if the problem is with the monitor, the whole computer would have to be brought in.
IMac and Mac mini lack expansion.

PLEASE NOTE: I compare Apple Mac's vs Dells best deal. If you really want an all-in one the Dell all-in-one has more ram, wireless keyboard and mouse and equivalent to $400 for free making the Imac still more expensive when you matching specs. Personally I don't think the All-in-Ones are a good choice, and consider them overpriced, lack expandability and repairs both more expensive and require the entire computer.

PS: Apple knows that they need to make Macintosh look different than PC so all Macs except the Mac Pro will not have a tower option. Apple's low end lacks expandability but it makes the Mac "look different", if Mac had a tower for low-end, more people would realize the similarities between the two.

Need help with plugging in my security camera to work on PC?

Danik

I bought a wireless surveillance system. I want to plug it into my Dell Dimension e520. I plugged everything in but nothing goes onto my screen. If anybody knows what might be wrong, let me know. Or email me at bobik.ua gmail . com if you might have any questions. Thanks.

Answer
Hello, Many users have problems with web cams. Press the designated button to turn on your camera. If you are using an external camera, use a compatible USB cable to connect the camera to the USB port of your computer.

Visit a website that allows you to test your webcam online. An example of a site you can use include http://www.ehow.com/how_8443971_test-webcam-online.html
Next try this.
Click the "Allow" button from the flash player settings window. You should now see live video footage from your web camera. If you don't see live video, your web camera is not working properly.
To reinstall the drivers try this. Right click on My Computer-> Properties -> Device manager -> Imaging Devices -? Webcam. Right click on the webcam and uninstall it. This will cause the computer to reinstall the drivers and software. Restart the computer and hopefully your problem will be fixed.
Here are a list of sites that will help
.

SVAT WSE201 Wireless Indoor/Outdoor Color Night Vision Security Camera System with Audio

I don't want to go buy a VCR and record it onto tape. Is there a way to record the video directly to my computer...i.e. a program that will record from the camera?

Answer
This question belongs in the camcorder group.

what are the best security camera systems for businesses with warehouses & large property to secure?

would like info on the best and affordable wireless security camera systems. Need at least 4-5 cameras. Need wireless, outdoor use, night vision, and zoom features for plate and face identification. a large area needs to be covered (about 3 acres). However, I mainly need to survelence for parking entrance/exit, Cash register, and 2 locations of shipping and receiving. need to know how to relay feed to central computer which in some cases is over 1200 feet away from the camera feed. thanks!

Answer
It sounds like you have fairly specific needs. If you are looking for licence plate recognition, night vision and zoom features it is not going to be cheap and you should probably stay away from wireless solutions - particularly inexpensive ones.
As for connection to a central computer, this is typically done with a DVR (Digital video recorder) Through IP. Although there are some IP specific camera's out there. Be careful on the equipment you choose as there is some pretty crappy offshore equipment out there. What looks good on a monitor locally may not look so good once the image is compressed and sent over the internet or LAN.

When you look at a system it is best to look at it as a whole. There is a term we use in the industry - crap in crap out. You may have the best the best camera but it doesn't matter one biut if your recorder is crap. Same goes for the recorder, if you have a great recorder and really bad spystore camera's you might as well be looking at a black and white TV in the middle of the bush with no cable.

I don't know what area you are in, but there is some basic info on my website at www.keepsafesystems.ca you may want to contact a professional in your area.

ExtremeCCTV just came out with a licence plate night camera. It is quite impressive but by no means a Costco / home depot unit.

Why is all security camera footage so terrible?

best security camera resolution image

skyking196

Every day on the news, there's at least one story of a small store robbery, or a car that crashes through a window, etc. They show the actual footage from the security cameras and the quality is mostly awful... choppy, blurry, sometimes in black and white. You would think these days they would have high resolution video, especially if they wanted a good look at a thief or attacker. I don't know much about security cameras, is the technology just not there yet?

Answer
The reason so many surveillance systems appear to be low quality can be attributed to the need for a compromise between image quality and storage length, and cost. As you increase the quality of the image, the price of the cameras used to obtain the picture goes up, as well as how much storage space is needed to keep the same time length of data. For example, a security camera system recording at a lower 360 x 240 (CIF) resolution can keep its data approximately 3 times longer than the same security camera system recording at 720 x 480 (D1) resolution. If your surveillance system recording at CIF resolution can keep 45 days worth of video data, D1 would last approximately 15 days before it starts to overwrite.

The technology is absolutely available for higher quality images, but in most scenarios is limited by cost.

What is a good home security camera system?

Gary

I am looking for an home security camera sytem that I could link with my tv on it's own channel.

Any suggestions?
Trying to stay below $400, I could do any wiring myself. I live in South Florida so it gets to be around 90 degrees on average. Just a standard resolution in color. Night vision would be a big plus but not needed. If it could be directed to the video input on a receiver that could work also. Would want it to store recordings.

Answer
Analog, composite video? There are lots.

On its own channel? Some RF modulators can be expensive, especially if you want to select the channel. Easier if you just use one of the other video inputs that are not in use.

What is your budget?
What resolution are you looking for?
Will the video need to be recorded and stored? If yes, what surveillance DVR are you looking at?
Only one camera?
Is night vision required? If yes, how far does the camera need to see in darkness?
Does the camera need to be outdoor rated?
Does it snow where you live? If yes, you may need a housing with a heater unit.
Does it get REALLY hot where you live? If yes, you might need a housing with a cooling system.
Is the video signal to be wired or wireless?
Is there power available where you plan to install the camera?
Is the camera going to stay in one position or is pan/tilt/zoom control required?

You have not provided enough information for anyone to provide you a good recommendation.

Israel - costing us money, peace, lives, valuable support from other nations, friendship, oil, taxes, other stuff.

Iran - possibly a good trading partner, has plenty of valuable oil, has potential to be a strong governing body in the region, keeps them away from Russia and China, other stuff.

How are we benefiting from our self-destructive relationship with Israel?
Sure got some brainwashed people around these parts.

is it illegal to eat things whilst walking round the supermarket?

Q. A friend eat a whole bar of chocolate two chocolate muffins and five cream eggs in asda the other day polished off with 2 cans of stella anda diet coke , the crazy thing is nobody noticed or even looked at him . I was wondering if there is some loophole here ?

Answer
People also snack on grapes, bulk candy and such. My wife is a manager for a major supermarket chain and she says they find opened packages all the time.

Yes, it is illegal (even in Texas) and, depending on the value of the merchandise, could actually land you in jail. While the occasional grape probably won't get you in trouble, opening packages, consuming the product in the store and dropping the package off on your way to the checkout could get you a meeting with the store manager and/or the local police. Most large grocery stores have camera systems and some have undercover security personnel.

What is the best brand to go with for a home security survailance system?

mja_bengal

I am looking to purchase a home security survailance system, I would like to get a system with very clear camera views and good color. Any recommendations?

Answer
For high quality images and color, I would recommend going with an FD series DVR package found here.

http://www.apexcctv.com/p-1251-4-channel-dvr-system-with-dvd-r.aspx

This is our complete 4 channel FD package solution. If you need more cameras, we have a 9 and a 16 channel system available as well.

We also have our 600 series DVR package which is also a great choice, at a lower price point. This package can be purchased in 4, 8, 16, and 32 channel configurations.

http://www.apexcctv.com/p-1006-4-camera-complete-security-system.aspx

Additionally, you can also go with a PC based system running IP cameras for even higher quality which can be found here.

http://www.apexcctv.com/c-77-4-channel-dvr.aspx

With any of these systems, you will have the ability to view the cameras using an iPhone or Android phone. This is especially handy if you will not always be at a computer and want to view your cameras.

yes, there is but it's very expensive (there's all kinds of cameras : infrared, spy, vandal proof, night vision; then there's all the extras to buy, sound recording,tapes/dvds etc.)... it'd be a good idea to get them an burglar alarm system that also supplies them with medical alert as well.... try this link(http://www.lifestation.com/) and this one(http://www.medscope.org/bandf.htm)

Hello

Alarm system are outated a CCTV camera system does everything an alarm system does and it will pay or itself because there are no monthly fee's, plus you can view your property from anywhere in the world in real time using an i phone, android or PC.

http://www.ascendentgroup.com/home.htm

Here is a write-up that explains IP, analog and Hybrid CCTV systems and the pros and cons of each.

http://www.ascendentgroup.com/home.htm

Many people have a misconception that IP has Superior scalability then Analog but with the advancements of DVR's this simply isn't true, with our X3 DVR you can monitor up to 16,000 cameras using our Central management Suite each camera could even be from a different DVR and a different site.

What is the Advantage of IP?
Many of the so called advantages of IP simply don't hold water in the real world, IP is mainly Hype and marketing and outside of a few niche applications such as 1 camera installs, where MP cameras are needed or large scale wireless projects which represent about 2% of the total CCTV market, IP has very few advantages compared to analog based on performance, cost and reliability.

Analog transmits over the internet faster and uses less bandwidth this allows you view you cameras in real time and control PTZ cameras, IP has to much lag and latency to do either properly as it has to transmit and receive video over the network.

IP or Analog why choose ?
What Ascendent Technology has done is allowed our X4S standalone DVR's to work as IP servers to convert analog cameras into IP cameras ( 4/8/16ch) in a U1 or U2 rack mountable case. Its the best of both worlds a standalone DVR that works autonomously with storage, playback and search, with the features of IP cameras to distribute video over networks and record on NVR's making a humongous CCTV system powered by Ascendent's Tri-fusion platform. ( Ascendents oes not charge for their 64CH NVR/Client software )

Scalability and flexibility
Ascendent's standalone, PC- DVR's and IP cameras can record at one resolution and stream at another, its integrated VBR and CBR lets you manage the amount of data and bandwidth that is used by each camera individually giving you the security and reliability of analog with the flexibility and interoperability IP to offer unlimited expandability by adding 1-64 cameras at a time. Ascendent's X4 Trifusion platform integrates the X4 PC, X4S standalone DVRs, X4-IP-Pro and, IP HD mega pixel cameras simultaneously. The Tri-fusion platform not only manages video but can integrate access control, analytics, biometrics, building management, NVR/DVRs, and other 3rd party applications from the leading security providers.

Cost Effective
The X4 Trifusion platform takes full advantage or prior security investments and existing wiring infrastructures while offering the best of breed technology creating a cost effective long term solution to suite the needs of small business to global enterprises.(unlike most companies Ascendent does not charge for their software you buy an IP product it will ship with our 64CH NVR server/client software)

IP cameras are usually based on CMOS
Analog cameras are based on CCD (usually)

CMOS has some significant disadvantages compared to CCD, this means CMOS
have inferior ability to cope with ambient lighting such as back light, bright, deep shadows contrasts, low light and IR this is also known as the real word.

File Size:
The smaller the files size the more images that are able to be sent and the faster they can be processed improving both FPS and speed. File size is the heart of any DVR and goes far beyond just its streaming capabilities as it also determines the recoding storage time, how much you can back up at once, how fast it renders and searches video. The file size of a DVR impacts the performance of the DVR in just about every aspect from speed to longevity and is often the most import spec of any DVR.

Most routers are not designed to handle IP cameras they have enough bandwidth but they are not able to process the amounts of commands. (9 IP cameras 30FP is 230 instructions per second) standard routers have enough bandwidth (up to 1GB) but cant handle the amount of tasks (instructions) so frames get dropped latency is introduced effectiveness of other devices such as POS, printers and data storage are affected and compromised.

IP does have applications and in some cases IP cameras are the only way to do a project but I would estimate that for 95% of applications analog is cheaper and higher performance with a lower cost of ownership and better reliability.

The best solution is using analog cameras with dvr's that have the ability to convert analog cameras into IP devices, that have on site storage so you only stream video over the network when you are viewing your cameras either LAN or WAN or to and from multiple sites.

Is it true that the USA has the MOST invasive cameras per business in the world?

Fedup Vete

I know that England has the most government owned...but I heard that the US has the most, per square foot, in the world...having people completely taped wherever they go...and if this is true, since the government can confiscate any security camera tapes, for "security," then the USA would actually be the most taped place in the world.
Nicole...no they aren't. Look at gas stations or even Walmart! Banks have even MORE cameras!!
Barry...Uh, yes, they do! Ever hear of warrants and court orders. Look at the patriot act for proof.

Answer
I read a report that in the UK a person is caught on camera an average of 300 times everyday. I beleive that would far out do the few times you entered a business a day in the US, So I would have to say the UK still wins thato ne.

I live in both the UK & the US. When I am in the UK I notice cameras all the time. There are polive vans that are called CCTV vans that hve cameras mounted on poles on the roof and they can raise them in the air to get a better vantage point. You alos have a lot more Traffic cameras, like the ones that take you picture in London to levy congestions charges.

They also have vehicles that drive around and take photos of car license plates (parks and on the road) then the plate is scanned through a data base and they check to make sure your registration, Tax, MOT and insurance is up to date. There is almost nothing that is clear of the prying cameras in the UK. I live in a small town and its bad there but Lodon is really a lot worse for it. Ride the tube your on camera drive your on camera, walk down the street your on camera.

By the way I was a Sheriff's Deputy in the US and the only time they can confiscate tapes that are privatley owned is if a crime was commited in the area and they must have a warrant to get them unless the company decides to freely offer them the tapes.

Read the links and you will see who has more. Remember the UK has more goverment owned one's and they also have cameras in their stores, petro(gas) stations, Banks shopping areas and so on.

Read the 1st link it goes into detail telling you all the different ways they put you on camera in the UK. Also the UK is considering not only catching you on camera, but also on audio, by putting high powered mics on poles in busy street and places people gather (2nd link)

How does the Logitech C615 Webcam motion detection work for security?

best security cameras hd on Camera Vector Art

Mary

How does the motion detection work for Logitech C615 Webcam. What is the range of the camera in in the room and does it record sound. Does motion detection record pictures "and" sound and does it have the option to record motion detection in video and sound. Can another person tell if the motion detector is on. Would there be a light on the webcam like on the side. Can the computer be in sleep mode for it to record motion detection. If the computer is turned off will it still work. If someone was turn on your computer will the motion detection be activiated. Thank you.

Answer
The Logitech C615 Webcam is a webcam. It is designed to be used to have a video call between two different computers with compatible equipment. It is not designed to be a security camera.

The Logitech C615 Webcam has a built-in mic. It is generally used for the voice conversation portion of the video call.

Page 11 of the manual is very explicit:
http://www.logitech.com/assets/46736/hd-webcam-c615.pdf
Video is recorded.

The software that comes with the Logitech C615 Webcam provides the motion detection. This means the computer must be on. Not asleep. Not off. On, running and active. The camera software in the computer must be running, on and active. The camera itself has not intelligence or storage. The Logitech software compares a previous frame. If there is a difference between the frames, then that is considered "motion".

If someone turns the computer on and there is a start-up file that has the camera software launching at startup, then the software/motion detection should work.

The "range" of the camera depends on the lighting. Poor lighting means short or no vision. Good lighting lets the camera see more. Putting a certain measurement is difficult. Webcams are typically used when the video call happens so there is light from the computer screen. If you are expecting this to work differently (more like a security camera) then you will be disappointed.

Page 3 of the manual shows where the "activity light" is on the front of the camera. It will be on when the software in the computer is running and recording and the camera is plugged in to the computer's USB port and operational.

best security camera australia image

Jezzie

I am going to be looking for an apartment in the next week and this will be my first time moving away from home. I was wondering, what should I bring or what should I know before I go visit some potential places?

I haven't started my new job yet and even when I do, it is a catering job that pays cash. So what happens if they ask about my employment or paystubs? Do I need to do a credit check on myself or will they run that? Bring a pen and pad? Camera?

Answer
Keep your nostrils on alert for the smell of mold. if you pick up the tiniest whiff of it, GET OUTTA THERE!! Get close to the carpet, if it smells bad when you lay down on it, that's a bad sign.

Oh how I wish I had been there to personally inspect the last place I lived in. Never make that mistake, never trust another person, especially a man (sorry) to inspect the house for you if something comes up and you have to go to another appointment.

Is the ceiling newly painted? They might just be covering up a mold problem.

Smell in the kitchen cupboards, they can really be an indication of what all your kitchen stuff will smell like once you put it in there.

Picture your furniture in the house. Will it fit? This is so important, if you can't fit cupboards and thigns that you store your belongings in into the house, it's not going to work.

Does it have built ins? It will have to if you haven't bought or do not have the money for a wardrobe.

CHECK THE TAPS. Run the shower and count how many seconds it takes for the water to get hot. This is a matter of personal preference, but to me it's important. Also check that the taps are well mantained- they should be easy to turn on and off.

Is there enough electricity outputs? Picture what electrical items will be in each room, find the electrical outputs, consider how many extension leads you will have to buy, for for example, will my computer desk really fit in the corner? But it has to go here, becasue that's where the power is.

Find the telephone output. It's extremely unlikely that it won't have it, but just do it anyway.

Do you require fast internet? Make sure ADSL2 is available. I'm not sure if you're in the USA but I'm in Australia, and in some places the internet isn't so fast at the moment. Not that I support the NBN. Off topic.

Are there nice curtain/blinds, and will you be able to keep them or are they just there on display? Because if it doesn't have nice curtains you will have to spend a lot of money.

Check out the nighbours. You can tell a lot about people by what's parked in the front yard, what's growing there, etc.. like, do you thing it might be a party house? Can you stand music late at night? You don't necessarily have to knock on their door.

Do all the windows and doors shut and open easily? Think about both security, and how you're going to get fresh air in.

How much privacy is there from the neighbours/ how much do you require? Is there a good washing line?

If the house has someone living in it when you are inspecting it, and they are smokers, just walk away. The house will be toxic for some time after.

How much maintenance does the garden require? It should be planted with low mantenance plants (at least for most people), not require a lot of watering or weeding or fertilisation. How much mowing is required? Is there a mowing service supplied? (some blocks of units just share the cost of a mowing service for the shared strips of gras behind and in front of the house.)

That's all I can think of for now.. hope that helps...

All Smiles

I am looking to install a security system in my small business.
I have looked at a few models there are a few that say they have --"home plug and play technology".
-What is home plug and play technology ?
-Also, what do they mean by it sends encrypted video on existing wiring?
-What do you recommend for someone who is not a techie but needs a small basic but good surveillance system?
(I was looking at the Logitech survelliance clock / spy camera from J and R store).

Answer
It may refer to HomePNA which allows you to send data/video over the existing phone/coax lines (see http://www.homepna.org/en/index.asp)

If you are not a techie, I recommend hiring a professional security installer.

So I Can Use To Take Videos To Take Pictures And Use For MSN Messenger

Answer
Fwink is a free and open source webcam application for Windows. It takes still images from your camera at timed intervals and puts them on your web site with FTP. You can add effects like text messages, time stamps and an overlay image.

Fwink does not make live video calls. For that, you may want to try Windows Live Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, Skype, etc.

You can superimpose a logo, or any image you want, on top of your webcam image. The following image formats are supported: JPEG, GIF (transparency is supported), PNG (transparency and alpha are supported), BMP, TIFF and WMF.

You can trigger your camera with the ATI Remote Wonder. Instructions for configuring this plug-in are provided with Fwink.

Our subscribers use HomeCamera's built-in motion detection for security cameras, to receive image and video intrusion alerts on their email and mobile phones. What is the best way to observe a new nanny? Hidden nannycam? Installed security systems?

Alan K

I live in a 2 bedroom apt and I have a newborn baby, what should I use to see what's going on with the nanny and baby when I am not home?
Some people have no choice and they have to. I trust the nanny, but still you hear and see things about what they do behind closed doors.

Answer
I agree with the person below, why leave your child with someone you want to monitor, especially a new born. Also you cannot install security systems or cameras without the person knowing it is an invasion of their privacy.

How to shut off certain devices from wifi?

I have to shut off the wifi to my sons' ipads so they can't go on the internet without my permission but I can't turn it off from the actual ipad as they are old enough to know how to turn back on. Is there any step by step way to shut their wifi on or off instead of changing password? By the way my internet provider is comcast.

Answer
You seek a technical solution to a social problem, which rarely works effectively or for very long. You'll find the never-ending quest for technical fixes to social problems in questions routinely posed here:
--How do I keep my { spouse | sibling | roommate } from { hogging the bandwidth with porn | using more than x% of wireless | staying up all night on Facebook }

You are about to become an iOS app developer. A quick search for 'ipad wifi restrictions', 'ipad and kids' and similar searches finds this is like the problem elementary schools and libraries face when allowing children to use computers, with no easy or cheap technical fixes. I believe the most effective fixes are a mix of technical and social fixes -- nice way of saying laying down the law with the kids, saying they'll be monitored, and allowing the kids to rat each other out as violators. Oddly, that's the same approach at large corporations I've worked for.

Apple iOS devices can be restricted (such as only connecting to a certain wireless network or disabling the camera) with locked profiles delivered several ways, including over-the-air, but it sounds more like an enterprise solution.

What you want doesn't appear to exist - a locked app that allows you to kill the WiFi remotely over the air, and probably requires you to connect the device via USB to re-enable wireless.

Lacking that, you can restrict the iPads wireless connectivity while at home:
--Purchase a wireless access point or router for use by the iPads. If it's a router, disable the DHCP server and connect it to your existing router using the LAN ports.
--Configure the iPads to securely connect to the new wireless router. Change the SSID and security key on your existing router so the iPads cannot connect to the old router.
--When the kids need internet access, turn on the new router. After their access is done, turn it off

When the kids start turning the router on without your permission, start disconnecting the new router at your existing router (assuming you put your existing router in a secure or monitored location). To make the disconnect/reconect easier, you may purchase another small 4-port switch to connect your old router to the new router - you turn the new switch on and off to disconnect and reconnect the new router.

If you want to be fair, establish a 'no internet' time for the family (such as 10 pm to 6 am) and put the main router on a timer. Your existing router may have some time-of-day settings that allow you to do this.

Your router may also have settings for time-of-day or service restrictions for individual devices by IP or MAC addresses, but do not expect that to work for long. This forum has many postings from kids trying to get around those router restrictions, which are fairly easy to defeat in most routers.

How do you hook up a security camera to a dvd recorder?

best internet security video camera on internet ideas for patent and development. LIFO, more recent at top ...
best internet security video camera image

John

i just bought a security camera and a tv from walmart . I need to record it on a dvd-r disk but im not sure what equiptment i need and how to set it up. thanks-john

Answer
You just wasted whatever money you spent at walmart they will work well for dummy cameras but that's it

Not all DVR are created equal, in fact there are many options that offer varying levels of performance much like the automobile industry. In the world of DVRs you can buy the equivalent of a $10,000 Kia and a $350,000 Ferrari and everything in between. Both have 4 wheels and windshield but that is where the similarities end, itâs under the hood that counts. And using the car analogy what you have here with the the Walmart camera is a used lawnmower that needs the blade to be replaced.

Just like any other consumer electronic in the end you get what you pay for. Most retailers and sellers make about a 40-80% profit margin, this is after costs like shipping and overhead. That means when you buy a product that costs $100.00 the manufacturer usually has only spent $30 to build it which simply means itâs not a good product and will probably have a working life of about 2 months. There is a reason these products are 1/10 of the price of good and reliable DVR brand names. The type of seller these products attract are online sellers (ebay) and will make profits margins as low as 2% which means they canât afford to offer good service or allow for RMAs (returns). Cheap products are like disposable razors they are NOT designed to last for a long time and you will end up replacing them every 2 months.

Now some products can be made cheaply like ipod cases, screen protectors, and other simple products with no moving parts or electronics. DVRs need to be good quality as they run 24/7 (20X more than the average electronic device) and process anywhere from 30-480 frames per second which in a year is over 15 billion images, and a good DVR should last 3-5 years.

A true DVR requires years of research and development to facilitate the seamless integration of both the hardware and software. DVRs are highly complex systems that must run 24/7, processing millions of images per day and are one of the few products that canât be made both well and cheaply. Cheap and inexpensive products like Q-see, Swan, Lorex, and other low grade DVRâs sold by Tiger Direct, Newegg, Sams Club, are not used by security professionals and should only be used by hobbyists.

I suggest you buy a PC based DVR has they have more processing power and normally have a much smaller file size and offer more features then Standalone DVR's. I know many people buy a cheap standalone DVR, only to upgrade to a PC based in 6 months especially when they are using it to manage a store remotely. Also PC based allows you to record up to 64 cameras where a standalone will have a limit of 16.

File size is crucial to streaming because most DVRâs on the market record at real time performance (30FPS per channel) so on a 4CH is trying to send 120, 8CH 240, and a 16CH 480 images per second which requires way too much bandwidth even for the most extreme internet connections.

The smaller the files size the more images are able to be sent, and the faster they can be processed improving both FPS and speed. File size is the heart of any DVR and goes far beyond just its streaming capabilities, as it also determines the recording storage time, how much you can back up at once, how fast it renders and searches video. The file size of a DVR impacts the performance of the DVR in just about every aspect from speed to longevity and is often the most important spec of any DVR.

If you are buying a DVR and streaming is a high priority I suggest you ask for a demo and connect to the DVR to make sure it is able to stream fast enough for your needs. Most DVRs say they have remote viewing but it is often too slow and laggy to be of any use especially if it is a standalone. Some good DVR brands that I recommend are Bosch, Pelco, Honeywell and Ascendent. These brands are what security professionals use, Q-see, Swan and Lorex are only used in residential applications because they are sold by Tiger Direct, Newegg, Sams Club, Costco and other retail outlets but are not used by any security professionals also their tech support rarely speaks English as their first language...

Here are the websites of some good DVR and CCTV camera brands.

http://www.ascendentgroup.com (AVP-4120)
http://www.honeywell.com
www.pelco.com/ (DX-4000)
http://www.bosch.com

Two good economical DVRs I would recommend are Ascendent's AVP-4120 DVR or Pelco's DX-400. They will allow you to view all your cameras instantly from anywhere in the world using either IE, or a client software. The AVP-4120 uses the latest H.264 codec to improve streaming and recording time, and will allow PCs and Apple computers to remotely view cameras. These are the DVRs I would recommend that are good quality and affordable
