What's the best home security camera on the market?

alixitis

I'm looking for something cheap that has audio and is wireless. Thanks!

Answer
Well for one thing "Cheap" and "Best" are oxymorons. I have pasted an article I wrote awhile back on CCTV technology. There are quite a number of wireless camera's on the market, my recomendation would depend entirely on what you are looking at using the footage for. If you want detail and court submissability, forget about cheap and if you don't want to spend alot of money wipe wireless out of the equation entirely. There is more information on my website at http://www.keepsafesystems.ca. For now here is the article, it is abit old but most of the information still applies.
If you have any further questions, feel free to send me a message. Please don't do as the last person and call my toll free line. As I am doing this for free, all questions have to be through Email.

Also, if you are going to be recording and/or monitoring Audio, you should look into your local privacy regulations on the topic.

Good Luck

The starting point of any C.C.T.V. system is the camera. Simply stated, a camera is a light sensitive device that converts particles of light into electrical impulses, however, there is a vast difference in the quality of cameras available to the consumer. Factors that differentiate the various cameras include whether they are color, black and white, light sensitivity, image resolution and image transfer technology. The consumer must also consider the inherent advantages and disadvantages in each of these different camera technologies and decide which features best fit their individual needs and goals.

In the past, color cameras have been both very expensive and lack-luster in their image performance, when compared to black and white cameras. New technology is now bringing the innovative technologies closer together in both the price and performance scale. The current differences between the two technologies are almost entirely limited to light sensitivity and light reactivity.

Light sensitivity is measured in LUX. The lower the LUX rating, the higher the sensitivity to light. It is important to keep in mind that even the best-rated cameras are limited by the technology of the day, as well as the visibility conditions present at the time of the surveillance. Although great advancements in low light surveillance continue to be ongoing, the image quality in a low light situation will rarely be up to the standards of daylight surveillance.

Color cameras, although much more appealing on the outside when compared to their black and white counterparts, generally offer less low light sensitivity than a black and white camera. The other advantage of black and white cameras over color cameras is its ability to "see" infrared light, which is invisible to the human eye. You can test this by aiming a standard television remote at a black and white camera while watching the monitor, the flashes you see are bursts of infrared light. The advantage of this becomes apparent in the ability to light up a dark area with infrared light, thus making images visible in almost pure darkness. With the color camera the area will appear unlit, however, to a black and white camera, the area will appear almost like daylight.

The black and white cameraâs reactivity to the invisible light spectrum can also pose a disadvantage in certain applications. Infrared light, although not visible to the human eye, is found in abundance in many everyday situations. For example, when aiming a black and white camera at hot pavement, it will "confuse" the camera resulting in an unbalanced image. Professional grade black and white cameras often incorporate infrared cut-filters. These cut-filters inhibit the infrared light spectrum in turn decreasing the cameras low light sensitivity.

The C.C.T.V. Industry measures image resolution in horizontal lines. The higher the line rating, the clearer the image will appear. With this fact in mind, consider that all electronic components within a C.C.T.V. System, from the camera, to the VCR, to the monitor. These items are all rated in the same way. The actual resolution of the entire system will only be as high as the lowest rated item. For example, if you have a camera rated at 450 lines and a monitor rated at 300 lines, then the result will be 300 visible lines of resolution because the monitor is the lowest rated item in this example. Another point to keep in mind is that the line rating is "Total lines" not lines per inch. Therefore a 12" monitor with a 300 line rating has a far better clarity than a 17" monitor with the same line rating.

The most recent and predominant advances in the C.C.T.V. Industry are the changes in image transfer technology. This technology deals with how the camera takes light particles and converts them into electronic images. Without going into too much detail, image transfer technologies include the following:

Phosphorus Tube Cameras - This camera has low quality, old technology and is susceptible to "image burn". Image burn is when intense light sources will burn themselves into the cameraâs light receptor resulting in the image appearing "memorized". Although this is not a problem with modern day cameras, image burn can still occur on monitors. Tube cameras are also known for poor low light sensitivity.

C.C.D - Also known as "Chip cameras". This camera is the most standard of cameras in the professional realm. C.C.D. cameras do not suffer from the problem of image burn and can incorporate various methods of signal processing, which offers a high level of flexibility to the installer.

CMOS Transfer Cameras - These cameras are very small and continue to get smaller as the technology advances. Although very attractive in their size, CMOS cameras generally do not offer the signal processing, image quality or low light sensitivity of the higher priced C.C.D. camera models. However, the technologies are slowly growing closer together to the point where CMOS cameras may eventually take over the Surveillance Industry.

The Surveillance Industry has continued to move towards the implementation of color cameras that switch to black and white, or even infrared in low light conditions. Although there are some models currently available on the market, the technology is not at a point where it is affordable enough to be manufactured on a large scale.

Fake security cameras in the market?

Ava D

I heard that there are now fake security cameras in the market. Do they work as well as the real deal?

Answer
Fake security cameras can be used to deter criminals from entering your house or vandalizing your property. Unfortunately, if it doesn't work, you wouldn't be able to record the crime and you wouldn't have any form of evidence that would help you and the authorities identify the culprit.

Can you remove a light fixture outside and use the wiring to install a security camera?

Zyvox

I want to put up 4 security cameras around my house.
I need an electrician to do it and i need it as cheap as possible.
I have some light fixtures outside that i could do without.
could that wiring supply a new security camera?

Answer
security cameras are most likely serial and they feed with low voltage (adaptor). In kit you will see a long cable that will connect to each camera and to one adaptor .If you want to be secure source to power you should use the interior supply to power the camera .That mean all the wiring must be interior and only thing that will be install out side is camera it self with secure wiring and no wire is require in out side at all .Reason that if wire be visible in case that wire be cut camera will be out of use at that section .
If you need more wires there are extensions that you can connect to each camera to reach your want
cause cameras have audio-video and also power supply that will connect to the monitor .Other wise you can use the wireless cameras they are cheaper and easier to install ,just power them each separately to a power source and then active the wi-fi system in your monitor.

Can infra red heat lamps be used as a light source for infra red security cameras?

technodai

That depends on the type of infra red. I'm not an expert but I think you may be confusing infra red imaging and thermal imaging.

At least some security cameras definitely use infrared source to 'light up' areas being monitored, as anybody up to no good could not tell they are clearly visible to infra red cameras.

Answer
The imager used in most security cameras is sensitive to infrared (IR) light. Devices known as "IR illuminators" are used to allow CCTV cameras to see where there is not an adequate amount of visible light. Some cameras have IR illuminators built into them, and there are also IR illuminators available as separate units that cover larger areas.

The early IR illuminators actually used a type of incandescent bulb, so I am thinking that a regular infrared heat lamp could be used as an illuminator, although it probably wouldn't be very efficient. Most modern IR illuminators use a type of light emitting diode (LED) as they operate cooler and are more efficient.

One seller of camera equipment that has IR illuminators is Super Circuits http://www.supercircuits.com

I'm looking for a good office camera security system. Any recommendations?

actefft

I would prefer the cameras to be wireless and to have a DVR. It would be nice if there was an app I could access the system from my phone. I would probably need at least 12 cameras.

Answer
I like Swann and Lorex systems for these (or smaller) systems.

There may be valu in getting two systems so if one fails, all the cameras are not down - but that is up to you.

Since we do not know the office layout, we do not know how the "wireless" part will work going through walls made of various materials.

Quick review:

Wired security cameras have a single "bundled" cable that contains the video feed and power. There are two plugs at the camera - one for power and one for video. At the DVR there is a connection for the video and the power plug connects to a power source - usually a "wall wart" or some sort. You can locate a battery back-up system at the DVR to power the DVR and the camera in the event of a power outage.

Wireless security cameras send only the video wirelessly. The camera still needs power (wire #1). If battery backup is needed, then some sort of local UPS is needed. The video is transmitted wirelessly to its base station mate. The base station needs power (wire #2). The base station connects with wire (#3) to the DVR.

You will also want to invest in a couple of monitors that connect to the DVR. 16 channels is a lot to watch. For the monitor at the DVR, a low priced, VGA-connected computer monitor is fine. There may be a need to have auxilliary monitors around the rest of the property. Use of the composite video out makes that easy.

Connecting the DVR to the computer network is easy enough - be sure the network is segmented using a network switch (not just a hub) so the video traffic and be isolated from the rest of the network. Use of PnP is easy, but a network admin with half a clue will know how to set the IP address and security properly. Also, for the remote access you want, setting up the router to allow your access while maintaining network security is needed. Again, any half skilled network admin who understands IP networks and router configuration can do this. This works best if your internet provider gives you a static IP address, but can still work if a dynamic address is used - there are some work-arounds and compromises you'll make is you go this route.

I would suggest sizing the system with more ports for cameras than you think you need - in case you decide to add cameras. In this case, two 8-channel systems gives you decent coverage. And a composite security camera will work on any manufacturer's system. I have installed Swann DVRs with Swann, Lorex and other manufacturer's analog, composite video, security cameras...

You did not tell us if the cameras will all be indoors or if there will be any out door (parking lot, alley, etc) in which case you may want outdoor-rated night-vision cameras in addition to the indoor versions.

business question "antique mall owner needing security camera system" which is the best to buy?

sbarber

Just trying to get input from someone that has an antique mall of similar business. I want to purchase a camera system that I can set up in "EACH" booth or atleast every other booth. Some can be dummies but I would like for atleast half of them to be the real deal. I ahve heard of dealers using globes and dummy cameras to deter thieves; does this work?
What system would you recommend and please don't say a 10,000 one, I cant afford that at the moment.

Answer
Hello

Dummy cameras are the worst possible they don't provide security and if someone is injured or claims to be injured in your store they can sue for providing a false sense of security. No professional security installer uses dummy cameras.

Here is a DVR that will work perfectly for you.

http://www.ascendentgroup.com/x4s.htm

I would recommend a Standalone DVR as they are more reliable and since they are linux based they are virus ans spy ware free.

The X4S Series DVR is an intelligent and professional CCTV management solution, integrating the latest technology and the most advanced features while maintaining a simple, intuitive, and graphical interface. The X4S Series DVR is a 24/7 turn key solution that meets demanding security needs to suit industrial and commercial applications. The X4S DVR is compatible with the X4 platform, allowing it to act as an IP server, while still remaining a standalone solution and allows you to view your cameras instantly over the internet with a PC or cell phone like the I-phone.

also here is some information on DVR and cameras you may want to read before buying a CCTV system.

Not all DVRs and security equipment are created equal, in fact there are many options that offer varying performance much like the automobile industry. In the world of DVRs you can find the equivalent of a $10,000 Kia and a $350,000 Ferrari and everything in between. Both have 4 wheels and windshield but that where the similarities end, itâs under the hood that counts. Just like any other consumer electronic in the end you get what you pay for.

I suggest you buy a PC based DVR has they have more processing power and normally have a much smaller file size and offer more features then Standalone DVR's. I know many people buy a cheap standalone DVR, only to upgrade to a PC based in 6 months especially when they are using it to manage a store remotely. Also PC based allows you to record up to 64 cameras where a standalone will have a limit of 16.

Many people have the misconception that a PC-Based DVR is simply an off-the-shelf PC with video capture (encoder) cards, display (decoder) cards and some generic OEM software. A true DVR requires years of research and development to facilitate the seamless integration of both the hardware and software. DVRs are highly complex systems that must run 24/7, processing millions of images per day. This makes consumer-level hardware inadequate for DVRs which is why Ascendent uses custom-built PCs with performance-level hardware.

My personal favorite DVR is Ascendent X4 series: Ascendentâs Tri-Fusion Hybrid Platform allows for the creation of a true hybrid surveillance system by utilizing the advantages of Analog, Megapixel, and IP technologies for unparalleled customization and expandability.

The X4 also uses the latest H.264/SVC codec offer video substantially better quality,. While its file size sizes is 30% smaller than MPEG-4, 60% smaller than MPEG-2, and exponentially smaller than MJPEG.

File size is crucial to streaming because most DVRâs on the market record at real time performance (30FPS per channel) so on a 4CH is trying to send 120, 8CH 240, and a 16CH 480 images per second which requires way too much bandwidth even for the most extreme internet connections.

The smaller the files size the more images are able to be sent, and the faster they can be processed improving both FPS and speed. File size is the heart of any DVR and goes far beyond just its streaming capabilities, as it also determines the recording storage time, how much you can back up at once, how fast it renders and searches video. The file size of a DVR impacts the performance of the DVR in just about every aspect from speed to longevity and is often the most important spec of any DVR.

If you are buying a DVR and streaming is a high priority I suggest you ask for a demo and connect to the DVR to make sure it is able to stream fast enough for your needs. Most DVRs say they have remote viewing but it is often too slow and laggy to be of any use especially if it is a standalone. Some good DVR brands that I recommend are Bosch, Pelco, Honeywell and Ascendent. These brands are what security professionals use.

I recommend Ascendent as they are less expensive because they cameras for companies like Bosch and Pelco and offer better performance but any of these 3 brands will work well.

These brand manufacturers also have a complete line of CCTV cameras and DVR for any application from residential to military and stand behind there warranties. You want to get a good bran name otherwise you will likely buy a product that work and cant be returned.

Can anyone recommend a wireless home security camera brand/model (good in low light)?

becaleca

I am looking for a wireless home security camera I can place in a window. I have read some reviews and cannot find one that is good in low light that is in my price range. I would not want to spend more than $300. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.

Answer
What will you be wirelessly connecting the camera to?

If a video security video recorder like
http://shop3.frys.com/search;jsessionid=igmkt3FrHDCr+YdP-r8Rdw**.node3?cat=-45940&pType=pDisplay
or a modified computer, then one with a base station that connects with an RCA cable to the recorder (or newly installed PC card) would be appropriate.

If you want it to be directly on a computer network (IP-based), and there is no base station (but yout wireless router needs to be working propertly), then an IP network camera is appropriate - and you see what the camera sees by connecting to it using a web browser on your computer...

In either case, for no- or low-light applications, the camera needs to see in the dark using infrared LEDs which come on when it gets dark enough.

Also, keep in mind that "wireless" is ONLY the video connection. The camera still needs a wire - for power. Some - not all - also have a small mic for picking up audio, too.

Answer
You wont be able to with a Bosch camera at the moment give them a couple of years.

95% of cameras and DVR will not allow you to view them with the I phone or other smart phones.
And even then you need permission and password.

Bosch is a good brandname but they are often expensive and a little bit behind in technology when compared with smaller manufactures like Ascendent.

One of the few manufactures that allow you to do this is Ascendent Technology Group.

recomend security cameras?

can you reccomend a good security system that will handle 3 cameras with motion detectors that can be viewed via remote access. please explain if possible.

thanks

Answer
Hello

Now when you ask for cameras with motion detector do you want them to be able to record only when there is motion, or do want them to have an actual motion detector inside of the,.

If you want them to be both a CCTV camera and a working motion detector I suggest Ascendents ASC-380PIR37.

link to the ASC-380PIR37
http://dealer.ascendentgroup.com//specialtycameras/31_1.html

If all you want is a camera that records when there is motion then all you need is CCTV cameras and a DVR. CCTV cameras put out 30FPS per second and send those images to a DVR it is then the dVR job to manage the video (decide when ans how to store the images, and allow you to remote connect to the cameras.)

the problem with viewing your cameras over the internet is most DVR file size is too large. File size is crucial to streaming because most DVRâs on the market record at real time performance (30FPS per channel) so on a 4CH is trying to send 120, 8CH 240, and a 16CH 480 images per second which requires way to much bandwidth even for the most extreme internet connections.

also uses the latest H.264 codec becasue it offers better quality,. While its file size sizes is 30% smaller than MPEG-4, 60% smaller than MPEG-2, and exponentially smaller than MJPEG.

Not all DVR are created equal In fact, there are many options that offer varying performance much like the automobile industry. In the world of DVR's you can find the equivalent of a $10,000 Kia and a $350,000 Ferrari and everything in between. Both have 4 wheels and windshield but that where the similarities end, itâs under the hood that counts. Just like any other consumer electronic in the end you get what you pay for.

If you are buying a DVR and streaming is a high priority I suggest get them to do a demo and connect to the DVR to make sure it is able to stream fast enough for your needs. Most DVR say they have Remote Viewing but it is often to slow and laggy to be of use. Some good DVR brands that I recommend are Bosch, Pelco, Honeywell and Ascendent.

www.ascendentgroup.com (Recommended)
www.honeywell.com
http://www.pelco.com/
http://www.bosch.com

Again I recommend going with a PC based DVR but if you don't want to spend the money I suggest Ascendent's AVP-4120 DVR or Pelco's DX-4000 as they will allow you to view all your cameras instantly from anywhere in the world using either IE. The AVP-4120 will also allow MAC platforms as well as PC to remotely view cameras and it uses the new H.264 codec but no standalone will offer the video streaming or performance a good PC based DVR will.

If you want to see how a good PC based DVR stream bellow are instructions on how to connect to Ascedent's X3L PC based DVR.

Instructions on how to connect to Ascendentâs DVR with Internet Explorer:

1) http://connect.ascendentgroup.com/ (Must be Internet explorer)
2) Install active X control
3) Hit âConnect)
4) DVR type PC
5) DVR code SITE-100
6) User ID Demo (case sensitive)
7) Password demo (lower case)
8) Hit extend config
9) IP address: 24.66.224.223
10) And hit connect

I hope this helps if yo have any other questions feel free to shoot me an email.

Security system cameras?

drew S

is there a system where i can place my cameras on a certain spot and be able to access the cameras from some place different

Answer
Drew,

Not exactly sure what you mean. I assume you would like to have a security camera at home and would like to be able to remotely access the cameras to view them.

Yes you can certainly do this. It is actually a fairly simple thing to do.

There are a couple of ways to do this. If you use an analog system you would purchase a DVR that would have a network connection that you can access via the internet. The cameras would connect to the DVR with coax cables. You would also need to provide power to each camera. The DVR would be recording what you need and would allow you to access it to view your cameras.

Another way to do this is with IP Cameras also called Network Cameras. They will usually come with software that you can install on your PC and be able to access the view of the cameras that way. Most IP cameras can be accessed directly from a web browser.

Hope that helps.

Security Camera System For Hospital?

Pancake Ef

We have a small hospital. My boss asked me to look into getting a new camera security system. 4 for the general hospital, and 1 mobile wireless one that we can move to a patient's room in order to observe them if need be.

I went to school for computer networking, not security camera installation :P Can someone give me tips about them? Good brands? Technical specs I should keep in mind? Maybe link me to some easy all in one solutions the meets my requirements above?

Thanks

Answer
Pelco.

Stay away from wireless - HIPAA issues due to network security. Run cables to each room, move the wired camera as needed. Do not put the surveillance system on any network connected to the internet. Again - HIPAA issues.

Stay away from inexpensive consumer-grade cams, DVRs and monitors. You will merely replace them in a couple of months.

Why is my window switching monitors? Windows 7 OS?

Elise

I have two monitors running off one tower. The larger (main) screen is where I do most of my work, and the second screen is where I have the security cameras window open. Quite often, although not always, when I use the "2" key (alone, not with any other keys such as Ctrl or Alt) it will move whatever window I am in from the main screen to the second. Why is this happening and how can I stop it? Thank you for your help!

Answer
As your camera software is running in the background, it might a hot key activated, Try to find any hot key from your cameras software.
In worst case this might be a bug in software. If this is the case, sorry, you can't do anything to resolve it.

Surveillance & security Cameras?

emuleiii

I want to install some Surveillance & security Cameras for my house. outside window. i am thinking maybe 3 sides of my house . front side, drive way side and the back side of my house. good enough to cover whoever can get into my driveway and back yard....
Which brand and model is the best ? i want something relatively easy to install and use . better something can just record directly to my computer.

Answer
For home use, recorded to computer, webcams work as well as anything else. Make sure the resolution is 640x480, plug 'em in, and you're set.

As for brands and all... there are only a few manufacturers, but the cams are sold under many brand names.

Many big-box home improvement stores, stores like Costco and Sam's Club, and even large department stores, sell security systems now. Cost can run from a hundred bucks for a simple system, to many thousands of dollars.

Look for the following:
1. Video is recorded in a standard format, like AVI. Real AVI, not some proprietary container format that requires the DVR software to work with. IF you need the video for something, you want everyone to be able to see it. Proprietary software is a pain in the posterior, and gets in the way more than anything else.
2. Resolution of at least 640x480. If you have the storage, even higher. Don't let anyone tell that 160x120 is "good enough", I can guarantee that it is most definitely NOT enough. Even 320x240, which is the default for many systems, is just barely good enough some of the time, and useless more of the time.
3. You don't need to store the video for years, but you need to have at least 7 days before the system rolls over and records on top of old video.
4. YOU need to know how to operate the equipment. Don't expect somebody else to come in and extract an event for you.

I don't install video systems, I'm the guy that has to retrieve the video off the system, and then try and make it into something useful. If you follow the 4 things I mention, your video will be of much more use in case you ever need it.

Mac or Pc???????????

tom

Answer
You should get a PC...
PC=Variety of specs, options, quality, prices, vendors, support
Mac=One vendor, limited options, still more expensive. Look below for more information..

Today, Macs use a subset of PC hardware. Why spend extra to get the same CPU chips, graphics cards and OS X isn't as secure as you think..

Don't believe the lies that Macs are better than PCs at graphics/animation.. Dreamworks Animation http://www.dreamworksanimation.com/ under studio click on Technology of Animation, an independent film maker I know uses PCs, a graphic artist I used to know uses PCs also.

A number of PCs can also run OS X (Mac OS) http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=os+x+on+pc&btnG=Google+Search&aq=0&oq=os+x+on+ as well just that Apple makes it illegal in order to get Market share.. The reason why Mac can run native Windows is because it is using a subset of PC hardware,

If you decide to buy a Mac for running Windows, you will still have to get the same virus/spyware protection, and run into the same issues as a regular PC.

Now is a Mac worth buying for OS X?

I say: NO... for the following reasons...

ADVANTAGES WINDOWS :
Aprox 90% of the market is Windows and most PCs have windows already pre-installed.
1) Some websites require Internet Explorer, to run IE on Mac you really get ies4osx which is the Windows version of IE running really buggy and illegal if you don't have a legitimate copy of Windows.
2) Supports devices (printers and other things you hook into the computer).
3) More business software/games
4) Want the dock on OS X (Mac)? google/yahoo rocketdock, objectdoc.
5) Used by businesses.

ADVANTAGES LINUX :
1) FREE (most versions are)
2) Install software by eitjher 1) Synaptic Package Manager, 2) Add/Remove 3) Opening a .deb or .rpm file (depending on distribution)
2) Like the Mac OS X effects? go yahoo/google COMPIZ FUSION which can do any cool effect a Mac can do and many ore....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N3gkX9HDfEE (there is no flickering when you use it like on the video, not sure why the person has the flicker)
3) Mac OS X Doc? google/yahoo Avant Window Navigator.Cairo Dock, http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x3rf5q_cairo-dock-mac-os-x-leopard-dock-on_tech
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p0hzi22g2DE
4) It is FASTERr/MORE SECURE to surf on the internet
5) Some Windows programs work with Wnehq/Crossover (also avail on Mac, but why pay $$$)

SECURITY
Mac OS X was hacked in 2006 less than 30 minutes, and within 2 minutes in a contest in 2008 . Linux and Vista were not hacked until another day when restrictions were lowered. Vista was next, and then Linux.
Macs are standardized with Cameras, if your Mac gets hacked, the hacker can turn on your camera with more ease.
Please Note: All OS's have vulnerabilities.

VIRUSES
Mac OS X has viruses (and significantly on the rise), a friend of mine has a virused Mac. As more users use Macs, more viruses will come out for it. Especially when users think "they are safe".

QUALITY/PROBLEMS
Contrary to belief, Macs are not better quality. Apple also has been changing suppliers to try to "lower the price" and thus lowering quality. Even with the lower prices, Macs still cost more, they spend a higher percent of budget trying to make it look pretty, and marketing.

Sample of problems: Overheating Macbooks, OS X- not responding to keyboard, some units with 16bit screens, etc. Apple statistics are misleading since Mac users with problem machines are more likely to go out and buy a new computer than PC users. Apple is lowering prices which means you can expect lower quality than in the past. Apple had switched the manufacturers producing parts. OS X also has problems slowing down.

Repairs are more expensive than PCs since the IMac, Mac Mini are compact units, and Apple charges a premium for their services. Some repairs can be done by another repair service but the compact design of the computer causes problems.
With an IMac, if the problem is with the monitor, the whole computer would have to be brought in.
IMac and Mac mini lack expansion.

PRICE
A similar equipped PC is much cheaper to purchase than Mac. Lets use Dell (but you can compare with another PC Brand if you like)

**(LAPTOP)
Dell Inspiron Laptop $849 dropped to $799
15" Screen
CPU: (upgrade to) 2.1GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Graphics: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100

Hard Drive: 320GB Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm
Optical Drive: Blu-ray Disc Combo (DVD+/-RW + BD-ROM) - WRITES DVDS,CDS, READS Blue-Ray Disks

Macbook $1349 just dropped to $1224

Hard Drive (upgrade to) 250GBSerial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm (SMALLER HARD DRIVE)
Optical Drive: (DVD-ROM/CD-RW) - (Writes CDs, DVDs, cannot read Blue-Ray) (WORSE AND 1/2 SPEED)

**(DESKTOP)

PLEASE NOTE: I compare Apple Mac's vs Dells best deal. If you really want an all-in one the Dell all-in-one has more ram, wireless keyboard and mouse and equivalent to $400 for free making the Imac still more expensive when you matching specs. Personally I don't think the All-in-Ones are a good choice, and consider them overpriced, lack expandability and repairs both more expensive and require the entire computer.

PS: Apple knows that they need to make Macintosh look different than PC so all Macs except the Mac Pro will not have a tower option. Apple's low end lacks expandability but it makes the Mac "look different", if Mac had a tower for low-end, more people would realize the similarities between the two.

Dell: (At The Moment) Specs Below costs $809
CPU: 2.4 GHZ Dell Inspiron QUAD (4 Processor) CORE
SCREEN: 20inch Screen
MEMORY: 3GB Ram
HARD DRIVE: 500 GB hard Drive
OPTICAL DRIVE: 16x DVD/CD Read/Writer
GRAPHICS: (upgrade to ) ATI Radeon HD 2400 PRO 128MB

The Mac Mini since it has no monitor, keyboard, mouse, very skimpy on options and setup and is not the best deal... The IMac is better price than the Mac Mini.

IMac ($1400)
CPU: 2.4 GHZ DUAL (2 Processor) CORE (SLOWER CPU)
SCREEN: 20inch Screen
MEMORY: (upgrade to) 2GB Ram (LESS RAM)

Can you have two video cameras hooked up to one computer?

Kels

Trying to do a film project.

We need 2 or more video cameras going into one computer an have them record at the at the same time?

What is need for this, any special type of stuff or software or hardware?
Also is the recording going to be decent quality?

Answer
Hi Kels:

Yes, depending on your camera types (what interface they use, e.g., USB, FireWire, analog) and what application(s) you plan to run to capture the two video streams. The quality will depend on the interface capability and how "good" your computer is (fast CPU, plenty of RAM, hard drive(s) speed, etc.).

I use two USB webcams simultaneously without problems, as long as I properly launch each app to each camera separately and with the correct settings for each (only one app can "talk" to one camera at a time). A capture program like Microsoft's AMCAP or Silverlight can launch separate windows at the same time, with each window selected for a specific webcam (there's a drop-down "Device" menu for that).

If you don't use an external hard drive (preferably FireWire or SATA) as the "target" drive for recording the video streams, you might get some dropouts or glitches, if your PC can't keep up. Some PCs with fast internal drive(s) will have no problems. If you plan to try HD video, you could run into problems on an underpowered computer.

For that, I'd recommend using FireWire capable camcorders or a dedicated PCI capture card designed for multiple video inputs (Osprey is one brand I've used) which is how remote security cam monitoring PCs work. The interface card does a lot of the video processing work and uses the motherboard bus to handle the high data speeds necessary.

If you have a Mac, most of the same factors apply, just the software names will be different.

As far as your film project goes, is there some reason the two (or more) cameras aren't camcorders recording to tape or SD card? If you don't understand how multicamera films & TV shows are put together & edited, you should read up a bit first.

Normally the cameras take care of all the recording work (and "slates" are used to mark the start point of each take, for matching later) and the computer is only used later to load all the shots where they can be easily run together and switched back & forth in editing software (simple programs are Windows Movie Maker & iMovie).

With "live" TV shows or webcasts, the cameras are run into an external video switcher, which selects which camera is "on the air" or recorded (your computer could be the recorder).

Wikipedia and YouTube have all sorts of detailed info on this topic.

hope this helps,

What is a good usb camera for video surveillance?

eHappy

or anything that i can hook up to a computer

Answer
I would not use a USB camera for a surveillance/security camera.

You might be in a different position, but generally, I have found that the camera needs to be pretty far away from the video monitor - in this case, your computer.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usb#Maximum_useful_distance tells us that USB cables cannot be very long. As well, most web cams do not have "night vision".

Contrast that to the 70+ foot CAT5 or coax cable runs I have connecting different analog surveillance cameras feeding into a security DVR that is on the computer network so I can see what they see through my computer...

If you can't use a security DVR, you can get cards to install in your computer that can use that video, too. Check Frys.com... Electronic Components: Security: Closed Circuit Television: recorders: there are standalone recorders for single or multiple cameras and PCI cards for computers with available expansion slots.

Since you did not tell us which computer, we don't know if this will resolve your issue.

Is video surveillance camera technology stable?

Tim C

Strange question but I want to buy a video camera detector. Even stranger huh... I found out about these devices recently. It is a device that detects wireless video cameras that are monitoring you like in elevators, gas stations, banks and (I want to find out where else). These detectors have a video display [cool] and actually show you the vision of the surveillance cameras so you can find out where they are mounted. The trouble is, these detectors cost about 500 bucks so if the frequency range of the wireless monitors changes the detector will be obsolete and worthless. NOTE> This is not going to be used for terrorist activity so don't go thinking you will be a hero to report me to the feds. You may wonder why i would want such a toy but i am just extremely curious who is watching me and then i might wonder why. I remember speaking freely at gas station pumps and the cashier would be listening in on the conversation which i do think is totally illegal to do if not related to gas.

Answer
It would not be worth buying the equipment you are talking about at the price mentioned.

1) Most important institutions such as banks, gas stations etc.. do not use wireless cameras because of the costs, reliability & security problems. Where wireless cameras are used at important locations, these video signals are most likely encrypted, therefore a viewer would not work.

2) Most wireless cameras available to consumer market operate in the 1.3 or 2.4Ghz frequency range. In general, there are only four channels available. So if you buy a cheap wireless receiver for a wireless camera with switchable 4 channels, then you would be able to receive the wireless signal from most general wireless cameras. And this should cost you less than $80 for the whole kit including a camera.

3) Dont forget that newer IP cameras can be wireless which are used in important places, but the video from these cameras can only be seen on a PC within the network that the camera is connected to.

4) IF you really want to be able to connect to any wireless audio or video device and it means that much to you, then try the expensive device but I dont think it will deliver what you expect .

Best security camera?

What is the best security camera for the home security?

A) IP camera
B) Dome Camera

http://www.aditgroup.com/CCTV-Camera.html

Answer
It depends on the requirements. But your question is confusing. IP (Internet Protocol) is merely the network connection the camera has. Usually, an IP camera - for home use - is not "outdoor rated". Some are... Usually, the IP camera has nowhere to store the video, so a video server or dedicated computer is required if the video needs to be stored.

A "dome camera" is a camera in a dome. It can be IP or analog. If it is an IP camera, then the above paragraph applies. If it is an analog camera, it will need some sort of connectivity to a DVR for video storage and the DVR can be connected to the computer network.

We don't know:
what computer network might be available;
whether you need outdoor rated cameras;
how long - if at all - the video storage needs to be;
whether computer or smartphone access is needed... and lots more.

Without this information, selecting *best* is impossible.

How to set up wireless IP security camera?

Bro

I just bought a wireless IP camera from ebay, and now trying to set it up in my laundry service shop. I was able to see what it sees when it's plugged into my router, but how do I make it wireless and viewable from other computers? The software it came with doesn't offer any kind of router setup/port forwarding.

If you can tell name any freeware or cheap software that would set this up for me I'd greatly appreciated it.

Note:
Router is a TRENDnet TEW-652BRP
Software's name: Master

Thanks for your help :D

Answer
Here is an article that explains how to configure internet streaming with WebCam Monitor or Security Monitor Pro - http://www.deskshare.com/resources/articles/wcm_Internet_Streaming.aspx.
There is a whole section on configuring your router with port forwarding.

I have a security camera pointed out my window. It has IR lights for night vision, but there is window glare.?

Jay

During the daytime, the image quality is great, but nighttime viewing is impossible since the reflection from the night-vision IR lights reflect off the window the camera is pointed out of. Any suggestions as to how I can coat the small portion of window to block the reflection while allowing the camera to see through it?

Answer
Depending on the camera angle, you could get some nast glare.

Is there an outdoor rated trip wire that would remain silent outdoors but alert me indoors?

MattLives

For instance, say I have this trip wire set up outside my house and something activates it. Ideally I would like the "subject" which activated it to remain unaware of my knowledge of their presence. Kind of like those car alarms that make your key fob vibrate or beep while remaining silent outdoors. Also, said trip wire would have to be outdoor rated. Rain/impact/cold proof.

I really don't know how to go about finding such an item but if anyone has any ideas they'd be much appreciated.

Answer
'Trip Wires' are not what you want.........50 years ago maybe. But today we have battery operated motion detectors, we have battery operated night vision cameras for under $29 and wireless battery operated cameras for under $40.

Instead of a trip wire - you simply put up a battery operated color daytime and IR nighttime camera with a wireless transmitter. Indoors you connect the wireless receiver to your tv or computer and use the software to view the picture...... the security cameras will have software that alerts you if a certain percentage of the image changes suddenly.

The internet is chock full of stores that sell this stuff. Most have cute web site names like spytown.com or can be found on ebay. They make some really powerful liner amps to boost the signal - and using directional or Yagi high db gain antennas you can push one of those little cameras up to 7 miles.

8 yeas ago I was able to mount a wireless camera on top of a Radio Shack 4x4 RC truck and we drove it all over the yard wile watching the camera image on the tv in our living room. I cabbaged that rig together from stuff bought off of ebay for under $90.

Many of these little cameras have an auxiliary contact. You mount the camera and attach a motion detector to the aux contacts. When the motion sensor detects something it triggers the contacts - the camera sends a signal to the receiver in your home and closes the aux contacts there - this will set off what ever light, bell, siren or what ever you want to alert you. This is the same signal usually used to jump a digital recorder from low fps to high fps (frames per second) or higher resolution.

Bottom line - there are tons of cheapo goodies out there. Start at ebay and take notes on what they are calling the different things - then hit the internet.

Home Security Cameras?

I need a wireless mountable security camera that I can keep on eye on with my pc computer. It also has to be at a reasonable price 150$ and under. are there any experts out there or people who know of a website?

Answer
There are cameras that will allow you to do this. I've listed a website of wireless security cameras from a reputable home security company. They range from around $197 to $99 for the wireless cameras. However, there is a whole list of other cameras (not wireless) that you may wish to consider. Frequently they are cheaper than wireless versions. Good luck.

Last note: The company I mentioned will price match, so you can be assured of the lowest price.

Have you ever used a trail camera?

dr. agon

I'm looking for some outside security cameras, how well do these cameras work?, and do you have any recommendations?

Answer
I have used a few different brands and models of security cameras and have some that I would recommend. First of all, I recommend staying away from X10 cameras. Although they are inexpensive, the poor quality doesn't make X10's worth buying. X10 cameras also don't operate over a wireless network which is something I prefer.

I feel that wireless network cameras are some of the most secure, high quality and easy to manage options available. Most people already have a wireless network for computer and internet sharing at home, so adding a network camera makes sense.

My first experience with network cameras was with the Panasonic brand. Although the quality was good in day light, the night vision was poor. Within a year the camera had burned out. This was the case for two different models of Panasonic cameras.

Then I finally discovered the Axis brand of network cameras. I have been running several Axis 207w models for more than two years and have not had any hardware issues. They work so well that I almost forget I have them installed. Now these are not necessarily considered outdoor cameras but I have them installed in my window ledges (inside) and they are facing outdoors to monitor sidewalks and door ways. They have very good quality in the daytime and even night images are good with minimal light sources. 30 frames per second video capabilities is very good for a camera in this price range.

The setup on the software side is easy and you are able to view live video over an internet connection using a web browser. It has motion activated functionality and good settings and options for custom surveillance needs. Recorded video can be played back using the included software. I like to watch what happened while I was away on business or vacation. It definitely gives me some piece of mind when I'm not around my house.

Answer
There are some that run with infra-red lights that can't be seen. There are lots of what are called "trail cams" and other cameras that were designed to film wildlife. Some are camo and made to be hard to see: http://www.squidoo.com/What-Dogs-Do-Home-Alone and others can be really tiny: http://www.squidoo.com/bird-cams I've used both of these types in different situations.

I got a confirmation that my package was delivered today, when i got home there was no package in the mail box or at my door? So i went to the post office and all they could tell me is that I should have it. So I looked on my security camera's and the mailman didn't even stop at my house she just drove past it. Yet it was delivered? I called and told them and they told me mail doesn't get delivered on the weekends so i have to wait till monday to do anything. It was a 80 dollar package and i have evidence it wasn't delivered, if by the off chance she just forgot to stop and give it to me and confirmed it at the office which looking at the times that it got to the office and then supposedly to my house she didn't can i get my money back?

Answer
I would call USPS at 1-800-257-8777 and press 0 and then press 0 again. They are open on Saturday. Give them the tracking number and tell them what you saw on camera. It may have been stolen. I would aslo call USPS Postal Inspectors at 1-888-877-7644 and press 3 and tell them the situation. If they can't seem or won't help you,you will need to write the the address below. Give them the tracking number and tell them what you saw. USPS still delivers mail on Saturday (as on August,2012). Try going to your post office and see if you can pick it up.

Good an inexpesive is a relative term. If you think 500 bucks for a DVR with 4 camera's is too expensive then forget about 8. - Personally, I would never buy the system you are looking at. My customers tend to expect quality and reliability as do I.

Typically speaking, retail camera's, like the type you are looking at, are fairly substandard when compared in quality to those on a professional level.

Your best bet is to go at it with some knowledge of the technology, I wrote an article on the subject awhile back but most of the info still applies. I have pasted some of it here. You can find more information on security related topics on my website at http://www.keepsafesystems.ca

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Although there are some models currently available on the market, the technology is not at a point where it is affordable enough to be manufactured on a large scale.

what is a 4 channel security system?

Jennifer

I want to get a security system with a few cameras but I don't know if a 4 channel dvr means it will work with 4 cameras. Please Help

Answer
Yes, a 4 channel DVR means it will work with up to 4 cameras. Another example is an 8 channel DVR the higher channel number means how many cameras can run on it. If you plan to expand to more than 4 security cameras you would need a higher DVR if you only want/need 4 it would be enough.

I'm gonna buy a securitycamera so that I can see what happens in my flat when I'm not there. I wanna be able to watch the video Image from the web. I have a wireless network/broadband connection and the system I'm thinkin of bying has a receiver that can be connected to a TV/VCR/DVR or even GPS. But how do I track the signal from the reciever to my network so I can see the signal wherever I may be at the time?
If you have a security system you want to be able to see what happens att all time. Not just when you're only ten feet away. Right?

Suggestions?

All the best/ M

Answer
I would buy a cheap network camera with WIFI.

For example AXIS 207W. Then connect camera to your wireless network and run a recording software on PC (at home or at remote place for higher security).

Security Camera - Which one to buy?

tas211

I want to put a security camera on my front porch so that I can see who is knocking before going to my door. I just want something simple. It doesn't have to record on to a DVD or DVR or anything like that. I just want to hook it up to an old televison set so that I can see who's at the door.
And I don't want to have to take the camera down to recharge it either so wireless is probably out. I just want to put it out on the porch and not have to ever fuddle with it again.

Answer
There are plenty of cameras that will accomplish this for you. You just want to make sure that you purchase a hardwired camera and that the old tv you're using can actually pick up enough quality to determine who is knocking at the door. Check out the link below for a list of outdoor security cameras. Many of them include the cable and power source.

Cheap Security Camera?

What is the cheapest security/surveillance camera on the market? - Any camera that can record footage, that can later be hooked up to a computer, so that the footage can be extracted.

Answer
A webcam is about the cheapest thing going, works as well as anything else. It really depends on what you want the camera to cover, and how close the computer is to that spot.

Security cameras, as in the ones you see at the stores, don't record anything. They are connected to a central recording device, via cable or WiFi. If you need a remote camera that can't be connected to a central recorder, you would really need to get a video camera. Not really a good option, but better than nothing. Power would be the main problem with a video camera.

I have security cameras set up, what software can I use to record images?

Hygor

I have 3 IP cameras set up. And I can see them on the computer. What is a good program so that I record the images (I want it running 15-24 hours a day recording) into an external hardrive or something?

What's a good one? And what's a good cheap one?

I tried searching but I get a lot of overcomplicated responses. It shouldn't be that hard to just record the screen right?

Answer
IP cameras are a waste of Money compared to analog cameras.

Here is a DVR that will work perfectly for you.

http://ascendentdvr.com/x4sdvr/x4s-8240dvd.html

http://www.ascendentgroup.com/~ascendent/HTML%20E-mail/X4S/x4s.html (pricing is dealer so unless your a certified installed you will probably have to pay 25% more which is still a steal of a deal)

Just about any Analog DVR will do what you are looking for and not only display them but record them as well they will also allow you to view them over the internet from a Iphone or laptop.

Many people have a misconception that IP has Superior scalability then Analog but with the advancements with DVR's this simply isn't true, you cn do up to 16,000 cameras each camera could even be from a different DVR and a different site.

And when you are using the internet to connect multiple sites together analog transmits over the internet faster with less latency using less bandwidth allowing you not only to view and monitor a situation real time but also effective control PTZ cameras.

What is the Advantage of IP?
Many of the so called advantages of IP simply don't hold water in the real world, IP is mainly Hype and marketing and outside of a few niche applications such as 1 or 2 camera installs, where MP cameras are needed or large scale wireless projects which represent about 2% of the total CCTV market, IP has very few advantages compared to analog based on performance, cost and reliability. (yet all companies touting IP will often use MP cameras to demonstrate the advantages of IP)

IP video is more about marketing then it is about performance as larger companies like Bosch pelco Honeywell axis can change for both hardware and software and once you use there cameras you have to keep using there cameras unlike analog.

Also IP sounds great, plug and play, Better image quality, use existing infrastructure, who wouldnât want that unfortunately this is often not the case.

IP is like wireless (in theory its perfect) if that was true there would be no wired cameras or analog cameras it would all be wireless IP.

IP cameras are based on CMOS
Analog cameras are based on CCD (usually)

CCD image sensors contain hundreds
of thousands picture elements, called pixels. Each pixel contains a light sensitive element and a capacitor.

A CMOS sensor is constructed using a array of pixels, but unlike CCDâs CMOS do not have a capacitor to store the charge for each pixel. The rows of pixels are activated sequentially rather then individually

This means CMOS has some significant disadvantages compared to CCD, this means CMOS
have inferior ability to cope with ambient lighting such as back light, bright, deep shadows contrasts, low light and IR this is also known as the real word.

In short unless you have perfect lighting a good CCD camera will outperform an equivalent CMOS camera.

File Size:
The smaller the files size the more images that are able to be sent and the faster they can be processed improving both FPS and speed. File size is the heart of any DVR and goes far beyond just its streaming capabilities as it also determines the recoding storage time, how much you can back up at once, how fast it renders and searches video. (Ascendents X3 DVR achieves file sizes as low as .3KB on normal image quality on a CIF image no IP camera on the market will come close to this) The file size of a DVR impacts the performance of the DVR in just about every aspect from speed to longevity and is often the most import spec of any DVR.

IP cameras have up to a 5X larger file size then analog cameras. (at same resolution) I have seen MP cameras that on 2MP resolution are over 300X (%3000) larger then our X3 DVR on a CIF image. This is an extreme case but generally speaking IP cameras have a much larger file size.

Most routers and switches are not designed to handle IP cameras they have enough bandwidth but they are not able to process the amounts of commands. (9 IP cameras 30FP is 230 instructions per second) standard routers have enough bandwidth (up to 1GB) but cant handle the amount of tasks (instructions) so frames get dropped latency is introduced and the effectiveness of other devices such as POS, printers and dats storage can be affected and compromised.

IP is a young and emerging technology and I have no doubt that in the future it will outperform analog cameras but its not a mature technology yet. Once we start to get standard IP platforms, get rid of license feesâ and existing networks have larger bandwidths then IP video will be a good solution, but until then analog is the way to go.

Make sure you get good cameras as well, Ascendent has the best IR outdoor cameras on the market and are about %50 less then Bosch while offering triple the distance.

how to hook up a security camera?

Scott

could i hook up a security camera to a rental property and be able to see what is going on around the outside from my own house? If so how can I do that so I can be able to keep a eye on my property

Answer
Assuming that you can legally setup a security camera system it is not hard to find a system that will allow you to view the live or recorded feed from an internet or mobile connection.

Here is a list of systems that are compatible with iPhone/Smart phones or a web browser. They are also expandable in case you want more cameras later.
