Why does my security camera not work?

Q. Hi, just got a SOWZE 700TVL camera. I installed it and I hear a click noise and i see LED come on. Now when I use coaxial to RCA, and around 10Meters of length, It doesnt show anything! I'm using USB DVR. Output power is 1.0Volts, so is the RCA cable problem that can't transport that energy to USB DVR? Thanks!

Answer
The camera manual should tell you how far it will send the signal. If it is a USB interface, the spec calls for 2-5 meters. You will have to know what kind of interface it is, composite, HDMI, etc.

DIY security camera--help?

evian.H2O

I would like to build a cheap DIY security camera. there has been an increase in crime (vehicle break-ins, etc.) in the past few weeks in my neighborhood. I want build a security camera system to keep watch over my truck at night. I would like it to have the following features:
---motion detection or manual start (motion detection would be the ideal case but manual start seems to be alot simpler and cheaper)
---long record time (bare minimum of 5 hours)
---good quality in low light setting
---store on to a usb flashdrive or sd card (mainly just want to store and/or watch the videos if necessary)
---relatively small if possible

the cheaper and simpler the better. I dont necessarily have a budget but would like to keep it halfway cheap. any tips, comments, videos, links would be greatly appreciated! thanks to all!
Hey guys thanks a lot for your input! it is greatly appreciated! i think i am going to go the webcam route. but the location i will be putting the camera will be about 100 or so yards from my computer. i looked into wireless transmitter/recievers but the good sets were pretty expensive. i also looked into wireless webcams but idk if they will reach that distance? maybe with a patch antenna of some sort? and is there any possible way to interface the webcam to store its videos to a usb flash drive or sd card? thanks again guys i really appreciate it!

Answer
A lot of people, including myself, use HD webcams. Good ones can be found for less than a hundred bucks, and decent ones near 50 dollars. You can purchase a USB extension cable for about 30 dollars and run the camera from your computer to the location you want it. There's a program called Dorgem that will allow you to save images from the camera to your hard drive. You can set it up for motion detection, or to capture images at a certain duration. The pictures are in a folder on your hard drive, so you can transfer them if needed. You can also use any movie making software to run the pictures in succession like a time-lapse movie. Or you can also use My Webcam Broadcaster. It's a free online webcam streaming service that you can access your webcam from anywhere there's an internet connection. There's even an app for that:)

Security Camera help?

i have an old camera, which has amazing quality and zoom. it used to record with mini dv tapes. but it scince then started ruining them. is there some way i can hook that up to be a security camer. there has been 4 break ins on my street.

like a way to record to a re wwritable dvd or some sort of hard drive?
or even to a computer

Answer
Yes, you can do all that, but you may have to spend a little money on the project.

If your dv camcorder has firewire, this is pretty simple. You connect the camera to your computer via firewire, and away you go. You could even use Windows Movie Maker as the software, although I don't remember if it will let you save the video on the fly in any other format than DV. DV is great for resolution, but eats up hard drive space very quickly. You would also need firewire in the computer, maybe $30 to add it.

If no firewire on the camera, the next two options are going to be very similar... S-Video, and composite video. Again, it depends on what the camera can do. S-Video is the better of the two, but not by much. It does make for better security camera footage though. For either of these, you would need a video capture card in your computer. Nothing fancy, even one of those USB dongle converters would work.

Your camera needs to be fixed, mounted securely. You can't cover the whole block, it just won't work. No matter how good your zoom is, do NOT use digital zoom. Optical only. Don't try to record the garage door 7 houses down the street, you won't get anything but the number of bad guys that way. Think about where you put the camera, and what you intend to do with the footage. If you have to use composite level video recording, it will be much more difficult to ID people from the footage.

What is a good usb camera for video surveillance?

eHappy

or anything that i can hook up to a computer

Answer
I would not use a USB camera for a surveillance/security camera.

You might be in a different position, but generally, I have found that the camera needs to be pretty far away from the video monitor - in this case, your computer.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usb#Maximum_useful_distance tells us that USB cables cannot be very long. As well, most web cams do not have "night vision".

Contrast that to the 70+ foot CAT5 or coax cable runs I have connecting different analog surveillance cameras feeding into a security DVR that is on the computer network so I can see what they see through my computer...

If you can't use a security DVR, you can get cards to install in your computer that can use that video, too. Check Frys.com... Electronic Components: Security: Closed Circuit Television: recorders: there are standalone recorders for single or multiple cameras and PCI cards for computers with available expansion slots.

Since you did not tell us which computer, we don't know if this will resolve your issue.

I bought a wireless 4ch DVR Security Camera system?

I bought a wireless 4ch USB DVR Security Camera system from eBay. But after all I got a camera system I didn't want.

Because it does not record all four cameras at the same time and can't hear the sound from the mic of the cameras.

SO I am wondering If I can use another receiver/dvr software on the wireless cameras to record all four cameras?!

(btw I have Windows 7-64bit)

Please take a look at the cameras from eBay.

How to get security camera wired to computer?

I just bought a security camera, it has 3 wire tv adapter cables. The 3 connected wires are yellow, red and AC adapter wire, all 3 are completely connected up until they split into 3. I was wanting to be able to hook it up to my laptop some how. So I was wondering what I have to get to have that happen. I thought I ordered the wireless but guess not and taking it back is not an option due to not having time. Thank you for the help!!

Answer
Hi,

May be you need a USB connector type which as a USB connectivity interface on one end and 3 female pins on other ends. May be you can shop for it on amazon.

How can I record off of my security Camera?

I have a security camera. That has night vision on it. Problem is I don't have a dvr. What I do have is my cpu, a digital cable box that has dvr, and the camera and receiver. Is there anyway I can record footage with these items? If not what would be my cheapest route?

Answer
If the cam receiver has a USB plug, it can tether to the computer.
If it's "Plug-n-Play" it should be detected and self power through the USB line.

Then, since video takes huge amounts of hard drive, you want a 'motion detection' software, to capture things that are moving while in the camera's field of view. That reduces the space needed on the drive.
Here's some of the software (it's free):
http://www.snapfiles.com/Freeware/security/fwvideosurveillance.html

Hook all of these things up and test it indoors to see how it works, alignment, and so on.
"Save" from the software selected onto the computer, to a folder you create. Somewhere on the desktop is handy to get to.

How can I get a pc monitor to be used as a cctv monitor? I have a security camera and a nice lcd monitor, how

JIM W

I want to use a pc monitor to view images from a security camera. The camera has rca type out puts, but the inputs to my monitor are for the computer. Is there any way to connect the two without a major investment?

Thanks

Answer
There are two ways to do this

1) As mentioned already, try a TV tuner card which allows you to connect a RCA type connection to the PC. You can then use the PC as normal with the ability to open a window to watch the video. This can be full screen or adjustable to a smaller size. You can buy from Circuit City in USA or Maplin in UK. The TV card comes as a PCI card to install inside the computer or as a USB device. See more info from manufacturer http://www.hauppauge.com for more information. Costs from $40

2) If you want to connect the Camera directly to a PC TFT monitor, then you will need a VGA convertor. This takes a RCA type connection and converts any video to VGA and connects to the VGA connection as on the back of your monitor. Again, these are available at Circuit City or Maplins. This costs more though but is the only way for a direct connection. Costs from $80

Hope this info helps

This one is $200 for 2 cameras + software, and is compatible up through Vista 32-bit which means it is very likely compatible with Windows 7 32-bit as well: http://www.q-see.com/products/security-product.php?ProductId=3

Is there a way to hook up my security camera to my computer?

ds.snow

The security camera does not have s-video, only rca outputs. I assume I could buy a converter, but do not know how the computer would recognize that it is a camera. What about splicing a camera usb cord and attaching it to rca cables. Would that bring up media player and play it possibly?

How can I get a pc monitor to be used as a cctv monitor? I have a security camera and a nice lcd monitor, how

Connecting a security camera to portable hard drive?

CAP

Is it possible to Security Camera to my portable hard drive to record motion?

which is the best way the camera comes with RCA cables maybe theres a RCA to usb adapter?

would it work?

Answer
Get a "WiFi webcam", i have one. It records movement and i have even got it set up to send me emails and text messages when it detects anything.

As long as you have a router then you dont need for your computer to be on, it will record the images to a remote site.

Great for security.

How do I get the signal from a security camera (RCA connector) into my computer?

I'm pretty sure the security camera output is RCA. I need to feed the video from the camera into my computer for processing in Max/MSP. Please help.

Answer
You'll need Video Capture device. I've used X10's USB Video Capture Adapter I'm very happy with it. I use it with their ActiveHome Pro Software and iWitness Software.

They often have package deals, where you can get all this plus wireless devices to trigger the recording, software to allow internet access to the system (and do zillion cool things I never even thought of doing).

They even have remotely controlled Tilt & Pan bases for cameras.

My only complaint is that the resolution of some of their cheaper cameras is a little weak.

Is there an iPod touch app that can view security cameras?
