I have a security camera. That has night vision on it. Problem is I don't have a dvr. What I do have is my cpu, a digital cable box that has dvr, and the camera and receiver. Is there anyway I can record footage with these items? If not what would be my cheapest route?

Answer
If the cam receiver has a USB plug, it can tether to the computer.
If it's "Plug-n-Play" it should be detected and self power through the USB line.

Then, since video takes huge amounts of hard drive, you want a 'motion detection' software, to capture things that are moving while in the camera's field of view. That reduces the space needed on the drive.
Here's some of the software (it's free):

Hook all of these things up and test it indoors to see how it works, alignment, and so on.
"Save" from the software selected onto the computer, to a folder you create. Somewhere on the desktop is handy to get to.

I want to use a pc monitor to view images from a security camera. The camera has rca type out puts, but the inputs to my monitor are for the computer. Is there any way to connect the two without a major investment?

Thanks

Answer
There are two ways to do this

1) As mentioned already, try a TV tuner card which allows you to connect a RCA type connection to the PC. You can then use the PC as normal with the ability to open a window to watch the video. This can be full screen or adjustable to a smaller size. You can buy from Circuit City in USA or Maplin in UK. The TV card comes as a PCI card to install inside the computer or as a USB device. See more info from manufacturer http://www.hauppauge.com for more information. Costs from $40

2) If you want to connect the Camera directly to a PC TFT monitor, then you will need a VGA convertor. This takes a RCA type connection and converts any video to VGA and connects to the VGA connection as on the back of your monitor. Again, these are available at Circuit City or Maplins. This costs more though but is the only way for a direct connection. Costs from $80

Hope this info helps
