What is a good home security camera system?

best night security camera system image

Gary

I am looking for an home security camera sytem that I could link with my tv on it's own channel.

Any suggestions?
Trying to stay below $400, I could do any wiring myself. I live in South Florida so it gets to be around 90 degrees on average. Just a standard resolution in color. Night vision would be a big plus but not needed. If it could be directed to the video input on a receiver that could work also. Would want it to store recordings.

Answer
Analog, composite video? There are lots.

On its own channel? Some RF modulators can be expensive, especially if you want to select the channel. Easier if you just use one of the other video inputs that are not in use.

What is your budget?
What resolution are you looking for?
Will the video need to be recorded and stored? If yes, what surveillance DVR are you looking at?
Only one camera?
Is night vision required? If yes, how far does the camera need to see in darkness?
Does the camera need to be outdoor rated?
Does it snow where you live? If yes, you may need a housing with a heater unit.
Does it get REALLY hot where you live? If yes, you might need a housing with a cooling system.
Is the video signal to be wired or wireless?
Is there power available where you plan to install the camera?
Is the camera going to stay in one position or is pan/tilt/zoom control required?

You have not provided enough information for anyone to provide you a good recommendation.

How much would it cost to set up Home Security Camera system?

ferretkiss

I would like to put some security cameras around the outside of the house, because of trouble with the neighbors. I would like to view what the cameras see, later. I think I would need at least three cameras, one on the car in the street, one on the front porch area, and one on the back yard area. Or maybe two in the front.

What is the best way to do this?

About how much would it cost?

Answer
It depends what you want to do with the video.

An inexpensive consumer 4-channel surveillance DVR is about $300.
Add in a 500 gig hard drive for about $70 (records the video).
4 cameras - Average $100 each for outdoor rated, night vision, so $400... budget around $1,000 for a low-end, multi-camera, system.

The expensive part is the labor. Are you planning to install it yourself? How will the camera's wires get from the camera to the DVR? Thinking "wireless" cameras? They still need electricity - so is there power where you want to install the cameras?

Actually, "wireless" security cameras use more wires than wired ones... The camera needs power (1 wire) and transmits video wirelessly to a base station. The base station needs power and a wire to the DVR. Total = 3 "wires". A wired camera has one long "combo" cable that carries video and power.

How do you want to monitor that video? The DVR has a video-out connection that can connect to any TV with a working, available, composite (yellow RCA jack) plug. More expensive DVRs can be added to a computer network...

Frys (and Frysdotcom) has a good selection of security and surveillance stuff...

How to stop theft in a small business?

I have a small business, cell phone store to be exact. But recently I have had folks who keep running out with cell phones and other high priced items. I do have security cameras and tape recordings but police take forever comming to the store and by then the criminal is so long gone. How do i protect myself? With a weapon to scare the criminals? Its a small business and I need every dollar I can save to pay back loans. PLease help!!!!
We do use dummy phones, but some customers want to see the real thing like the menus for a example. I am getting to the point where i am looking for something in self defense. Would anyone thing in that manner?

Answer
why don't you do what the bigger cell phone companies do. Just have dummy phones that are tethered to a stand, and have the real phones under lock and key in the back.

From a standard baby monitor system (summer infant), not a webcam... Is there a way to pick up the frequency?

Answer
I don't see why not but the problem is that you cannot exactly 'tune things' in this way. The issue is not signal itself but FCC standards. They tell the companies to put certain devices on certain frequencies for operation. That being said it prevents overlap. However that doesn't prevent too much. Using some Linux software you may be able to hack your wireless router into transmitting that signal to your computer if you have one, theoretically. It is also plausible that the company that made the device may have thought about this already and could have a software program available for use.

All I'm saying is it could be done but whether or not this screws up the router later or not if done by a hack is something you will have to decide on dealing with.

My advice: Get a web cam that can link up via ethernet and yes they make such a beast as a security camera. These have similar sensitive microphones like what you would find in baby monitors. Most though start off around $79.99.

How do I take kittens away from their feral mother?

Sophia Sim

Recently we've noticed a young looking tuxedo cat that goes underneath our shed a lot. My mom suggested that she was eating baby possums but I just told her to let the cat be. But lo and behold after about a month of this behavior two tabby kittens join the mother outside the shed. Our shed is in it's own separate location with fencing surrounding it so the kittens can't leave yet but the mother can. Anyway once we discovered that she had kittens underneath the shed we began to feed her and monitor them with a security camera, over the past few weeks we've been dedicated to the kittens. They are about 5-6 weeks old. Now on to the question. We really would like to take these kittens in but the mother is obviously too feral to domesticate but the kittens have potential. So what I'm asking is if it's okay to take the kittens without the mother? I would feel awful but then again I feel like the kittens would survive and thrive with us. The kittens are weaned because they eat the dry good we leave out for the mother. PLEASE ANSWER ASAP THEY ARE SOON OLD ENOUGH TO LEAVE THE ENCLOSURE. :(

Answer
Feral born kittens are not like kittens born to friendly house cats. The sooner you can get them away from mom, the better your chances of socializing them. By the time they are past 6 weeks or so, it becomes much harder as they are learning mom's wild ways. What you need to do though is borrow a humane trap from your local shelter, and trap mom, so that she can be spayed. Other wise she is going to present you with another litter in another couple of months, and one cat will soon turn into 20, then 40 - and then what?

Is there such thing as a video security system I can buy and install myself that transmits to my PC at home?

Can this be done WITHOUT paying a subscription to a security company? The purpose of the video security system is to keep an eye out on the business after hours. Any info, links or suggestions will be appreciated.Thanks.

Answer
Hello

You do not need to subscribe to any service as long as you have internet and know the user name and password of your DVR you should be able to connect to from anywhere.

I suggest you buy a PC based DVR has they have more processing power and normally have a much smaller file size and offer more features then Standalone DVR's. I know many people buy a cheap standalone DVR, only to upgrade to a PC based in 6 months especially when they are using it to manage a store remotely. Also PC based allows you to record up to 64 cameras where a standalone will have a limit of 16.

File size is crucial to streaming because most DVRâs on the market record at real time performance (30FPS per channel) so on a 4CH is trying to send 120, 8CH 240, and a 16CH 480 images per second which requires way too much bandwidth even for the most extreme internet connections.

The smaller the files size the more images are able to be sent, and the faster they can be processed improving both FPS and speed. File size is the heart of any DVR and goes far beyond just its streaming capabilities, as it also determines the recording storage time, how much you can back up at once, how fast it renders and searches video. The file size of a DVR impacts the performance of the DVR in just about every aspect from speed to longevity and is often the most important spec of any DVR.

If you are buying a DVR and streaming is a high priority I suggest you ask for a demo and connect to the DVR to make sure it is able to stream fast enough for your needs. Most DVRs say they have remote viewing but it is often too slow and laggy to be of any use especially if it is a standalone. Some good DVR brands that I recommend are Bosch, Pelco, Honeywell and Ascendent. These brands are what security professionals use, Q-see, Swan and Lorex are only used in residential applications because they are sold by Tiger Direct, Newegg, Sams Club, Costco and other retail outlets but are not used by any security professionals also their tech support rarely speaks English as their first language...

These brand manufacturers also have a complete line of CCTV cameras for any application from residential to military.

http://www.pelco.com/
http://www.bosch.com

I have done projects that required cameras to stream over satellite and cellular networks and the only DVR that could provide the video streaming was Ascendent Technology Groupâs X3 DVR. To give you an example of what a good DVR should stream like, below are instructions on how to connect to Ascendent's X3 DVR using Internet Explorer.

This makes a great demo as it is up 24/7 and camera 1 is a PTZ camera which allows you to Pan Tilt and Zoom in real-time over the internet using the controls located to the right.

Instructions on how to connect to Ascendentâs DVR with Internet Explorer:

1) http://connect.ascendentgroup.com/ (Must be Internet explorer)
2) Install active X control
3) Hit âConnect)
4) DVR type PC
5) DVR code SITE-100
6) User ID Demo (case sensitive capital D)
7) Password demo (all lower case)
8) Hit extend config
9) IP address: 24.66.224.223
10) And hit connect

Again I recommend going with a PC based DVR but if you don't want to spend the money I suggest Ascendent's AVP-4120 DVR or Pelco's DX-4000 as they will allow you to view all your cameras instantly from anywhere in the world using either IE. The AVP-4120 will also allow MAC platforms as well as PC to remotely view cameras and it uses the new H.264 codec but no standalone will offer the video streaming or performance a good PC based DVR will.

Hope this helps

Is it true that Mac Books do not get infected with viruses?

I have never used Mac but I've heard many times that one big advantage of Macs over Windows PCs is that Macs do not get infected with viruses so I don't have to buy anti-virus software like I do with my PC. Is that true? Why is it that Macs are immune to computer viruses?

Answer
VIRUSES
Mac OS X has viruses (and significantly on the rise), a friend of mine has a virused Mac. As more users use Macs, more viruses will come out for it. Especially when users think "they are safe".

SECURITY
Mac OS X was hacked in 2006 less than 30 minutes, and within 2 minutes in a contest in 2008, and within 10 seconds in 2009. In 2008, Linux and Vista were not hacked until another day when restrictions were lowered. Vista was next, and then Linux. In 2009 Windows 7 fell shortly after the Mac but Linux was unscathed.
Macs are standardized with Cameras, if your Mac gets hacked, the hacker can turn on your camera with more ease.
Please Note: All OS's have vulnerabilities.

QUALITY/PROBLEMS
Contrary to belief, Macs are not better quality. Apple also has been changing suppliers to try to "lower the price" and thus lowering quality. Even with the lower prices, Macs still cost more, they spend a higher percent of budget trying to make it look pretty, and marketing.

Sample of problems: Overheating Macbooks, OS X- not responding to keyboard, some units with 16bit screens, etc. Apple statistics are misleading since Mac users with problem machines are more likely to go out and buy a new computer than PC users. Apple is lowering prices which means you can expect lower quality than in the past. Apple had switched the manufacturers producing parts. OS X also has problems slowing down.

Repairs are more expensive than PCs since the IMac, Mac Mini are compact units, and Apple charges a premium for their services. Some repairs can be done by another repair service but the compact design of the computer causes problems.
With an IMac, if the problem is with the monitor, the whole computer would have to be brought in.
IMac and Mac mini lack expansion.

I had some friends over for a dinner party last weekend. It was a couple that I had known for several years who came in from New England, "Linda" and "Joe" my neighbor's from across the street "Karen" and "Pete" and their daughter "Jane". Jane is only 15 but she's a little trouble maker and I've had several problems with her, she wasn't even allowed at my house but I okayed it this time because she was grounded and her parents didn't want to leave her at home alone. In the past this girl has lied to me, she stole alcohol from my house, she teased my foster-son because his mother died of cancer, and she broke into my yard while I was away and used my pool (I found out through security cam video) This girl is bad news. Last weekend she took it too far and she destroyed my friendship with her parents.

Here is what happened:
I have a deck in front of my house use it to relax on we have outdoor furniture and a fireplace. Jane was sitting near the fire along with her parents, and my friend Joe. His wife, Linda was helping me in the kitchen. My husband and foster son were on the back deck BBQing. At some point Karen and Pete come inside to help set the table leaving Jane and Joe outside on the deck, alone. About 5 minutes later Joe comes inside and we start talking about how it was still 70F outside where I live (California) and it's raining and cold where he was living. Everything seemed fine until Jane comes in the house, she asks her mother if she could have a sip of her wine and Linda says "that's a no-no in my house, i'm a social worker you know...and i've seen kids kill themselves thinking they could drink." I added "sorry no underage drinking in my house" and Karen than added "you heard the women!" pissed she left the room. Later all the adults were in the dining room (dinner wasn't quite ready) and my fosterson and Jane were sitting in the living room where we have a full bar (it's usually locked but since we had guests over and there is a trap door under the bar into the wine cellar we had it open) My foster son comes into the dinning room and says "umm Jane's getting into the bar" Karen and I come out and Jane is trying to open the liquor cabinet in the bar, and a scene ensued.
Jane now crying, says she just wanted to "drowse" her sorrows because she was "molested by that creepy guy" ( she was trying to get out of being grounded for another 4 weeks) when her parents asked her to explain she said that when they left her out on the deck with joe that he walked up to her and showed her his penis told her "you better suck it and you better not tell" and than shoved himself in her mouth. As you can imagine Joe was freaked out he just keeped saying "never happend, never happend I just asked her how she was doing in school, id never do that." of coarse her parents took her side and were about to call the police when I told them to hold on let's all sit down for a sec before the police are called and talk about this, but no they just screamed at me and said I was enabling a child molester and that I should be ashamed they left and the police were called. Linda and Joe didn't leave my home since the police were coming. While we were waiting for the police my foster-son said "why don't we just review the security cameras like we did when the brat broke into our pool" so I did and the camera showed Joe sitting about 4 feet away from Jane, than it showed Jane talking to Joe, the audio was really hard to understand but this is what we could make out:

Jane: do you like the snow?
Joe: Not as much as when I was a child
Jane: I like the snow
Joe: do you have snow around her?
Jane: not that kind of snow, the kind that goes up your nose (laughing)
<silence for about 30secs>
Joe: how are you doing in school are you a good student?
Jane: <says something but we can't make it out>
Joe : Oh, I see. I better go back inside and sit with the wife

Joe than walks away the opposite direction of Jane at no point did he come close enough to Jane to shake her hand let alone what she was claiming.

The police asked Janes parents to come back over to see the video themselves, they did and they said sorry to all of us (but I don't think I will be talking to them again) They just made excuses for her saying that "She has a learning disability and it causes her to have a low self esteem and act out." when I asked what her learning disability is they said "dyslexia" I think it's something else because there has to be some other cause for her inexcusable behavior.

Sorry I know it's a long one but thanks for the advice.

Answer
Well, that is a long question indeed.
Personally, we all know that nearly everyone has things in their lives that make them difficult, maybe this girl did as well, but as you have mentioned, that is absolutely no way to deal with it.
Dyslexia obviously can not cause a child to have that much anger and problems, maybe OCD, or ADD.
That would be understandable.
But not this.
I highly doubt he "raped" her. From what you have told us, it is obvious that the child is lying.
Isnt it somewhat revolting.. the extents some go for attention?
That just might be it.. she might be doing all of this to get attention, maybe her parents never gave her enough attention as a child, or in other specific circumstances.
She might feel neglected, therefore acting out in such a manner is her way to make up for all of the loss attention she never got.
She most definitely is not good news, but keep in mind, everybody has a breaking point, and this girl still has a heart even though at times, her heart might in fact seem dark/cold.
I pity the fact you and the man who was accused of being raped had to endure this, I hope it is all over for the most part.
For the family, be friendly (as in acquaintance friendly) but not overly welcoming, and inviting. Avoid the child as much as possible and your problems will soon vanish in a mere amount of time.
The best of luck to you!
If you ever need anyone to talk to, I am a very good listener, and I can always relate well.

Home surveillance system - what's neede? DVR/monitor/camera(s). Where find QUALITY & inexpensive products?

tlc289

I've priced a base system (1 camera with infrared capability / 80G DVR / labor) for $1100 w/ a local security company. It jumps up to $2200 for additional cameras and higher-functioning DVR (160G). Can a regular man install this sort of system?

Any and all information is appreciated.

Answer
Yes, I've installed two different digital video recording systems myself, bought the PCs from the local computer store, bought the PCI cards on-line and bought used CCTV cameras off eBay, bought the wire and connections at a local electronics store. They work like a champ.

The advantage of PCs is that the image is already digitized and I can monitor and review over the internet from another location (securely).

Approximate cost: New PC: $200 (open-box store PC returned by a previous customer, works fine), new PCI card: $29, 4 used CCTV cameras from eBay $80 ($20 each), wire and connections I didn't add it up but may run something less than $100 unless you want really long lines.

You cannot beat the quality and price of used CCTV cameras off eBay, although, like anything else eBay, you have to buy things that work. A few CCTV cameras I bought didn't work. Not knowing anything about cameras, I opened them up anyway and resoldered loose connections and they worked!

My second system has a similar PC except I bought a nicer PCI card for about $250 and have indoor/outdoor IR (night lighted) cameras that cost around $100 each.

They both have been running fine for over a year so far. And I'm not a security or PC expert but have learned a few things along the way.

I've ths idea of using my webcam as a security camera which will record the videos in the hard disk while I'm not at home. To do so, I need a video recorder software which'll take the video feed input frm the webcam and save it into the hard disk. Am I right?
If I'm thn which software can I use?
If I'm not thn how to do it?
...I'm sure it's possible but don't exactly knw how.

Answer
I have a creative webcam, and it came with software that turns your pc into a security system with a program that came with the camera called Webcam Monitor. In this program you can set up your camera to start recording a clip when it detects motion, and then it will send an e-mail to a specified e-mail address. I wasn't able to set it up correctly though and I don't know what I was doing wrong.

How do you hook up a security camera to a dvd recorder?

John

i just bought a security camera and a tv from walmart . I need to record it on a dvd-r disk but im not sure what equiptment i need and how to set it up. thanks-john

Answer
You just wasted whatever money you spent at walmart they will work well for dummy cameras but that's it

Not all DVR are created equal, in fact there are many options that offer varying levels of performance much like the automobile industry. In the world of DVRs you can buy the equivalent of a $10,000 Kia and a $350,000 Ferrari and everything in between. Both have 4 wheels and windshield but that is where the similarities end, itâs under the hood that counts. And using the car analogy what you have here with the the Walmart camera is a used lawnmower that needs the blade to be replaced.

Just like any other consumer electronic in the end you get what you pay for. Most retailers and sellers make about a 40-80% profit margin, this is after costs like shipping and overhead. That means when you buy a product that costs $100.00 the manufacturer usually has only spent $30 to build it which simply means itâs not a good product and will probably have a working life of about 2 months. There is a reason these products are 1/10 of the price of good and reliable DVR brand names. The type of seller these products attract are online sellers (ebay) and will make profits margins as low as 2% which means they canât afford to offer good service or allow for RMAs (returns). Cheap products are like disposable razors they are NOT designed to last for a long time and you will end up replacing them every 2 months.

Now some products can be made cheaply like ipod cases, screen protectors, and other simple products with no moving parts or electronics. DVRs need to be good quality as they run 24/7 (20X more than the average electronic device) and process anywhere from 30-480 frames per second which in a year is over 15 billion images, and a good DVR should last 3-5 years.

A true DVR requires years of research and development to facilitate the seamless integration of both the hardware and software. DVRs are highly complex systems that must run 24/7, processing millions of images per day and are one of the few products that canât be made both well and cheaply. Cheap and inexpensive products like Q-see, Swan, Lorex, and other low grade DVRâs sold by Tiger Direct, Newegg, Sams Club, are not used by security professionals and should only be used by hobbyists.

Here are the websites of some good DVR and CCTV camera brands.

Two good economical DVRs I would recommend are Ascendent's AVP-4120 DVR or Pelco's DX-400. They will allow you to view all your cameras instantly from anywhere in the world using either IE, or a client software. The AVP-4120 uses the latest H.264 codec to improve streaming and recording time, and will allow PCs and Apple computers to remotely view cameras. These are the DVRs I would recommend that are good quality and affordable

How and where to get good CCTV System and security cameras?

best security camera website on - Security cameras, self-monitoring or fully monitored security ...

Oksana Slo

I am confused, I've been comparing a lot of security camera systems on different websites and biggest difference I see is in price. 8 camera system from $700 to $5000, 16 camera from $1300 to $10,000 and they all do same things according to description. Anyone ran into this?

Answer
I'm professional cctv installer. Some websites are just trying to rip you off saying they have best stuff and they are using their own model number, so you can't find it anywhere else online. Here is some good reading about it, pretty good cctv tutorial for first time buyers

Hopefully this will help you buying your cctv system.

How does live monitoring from security camera's work?

Metal

We need a security camera for our home. When away, how does live monerting work through your iPhone or Android ? We live our little dog alone all day and would like to be able to check on him by this security camera too. Do you have to have a internet hookup, or phone hook up, how does it work to be able to broadcast that video to your iPhone or Droid?

Answer
Hi "Metal":

The most important thing to have, when setting up an internet-based camera (called an IP camera), is to have a good broadband (non-dialup, always on) internet connection at your house. It doesn't have to be high-speed cable modem (from your cable company) or fiber-optic (like Verizon FiOS or ATT U-verse), but at least a DSL-line from your phone company.

The IP cameras (or even a webcam connected to one of your computers) need to be connected to a home "network" or LAN (Local Area Network) via either WiFi --for wireless cams-- or using regular Ethernet (Cat5 or Cat6) cables to an internet router. If you just plan on having one camera connected to your PC, then you could use the computer as the "router", but routers are cheap ($20-$40 if you shop wisely) and simple to set up.

Your iPhone or Android device would simply use a web browser to log onto your home network, using an IP address & password, and you would watch your camera just like watching a YouTube feed, except that it would be "live".

Here's a YouTube demo of this using an iPhone, by a good security camera company: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PnP_Dbqn1Cw&feature=related

There are plenty of other YouTube demos and tutorials, if you search around. I added a link to Swann cameras' website tutorials (they're the largest seller of DIY security systems) in my Sources below, as another good information resource.

hope this helps,

what will happened to the drivers of my pc if i change from win7 to MAC or Linux?

Pioneer

i am planning to change my OS from windows 7 to MAC or Linux but i am quite afraid that if i do it, the drivers in my printer, camera, motherboard, bluetooth, joystick, ect. won't work anymore.
i just wanna confirm, if my doubts are correct that the drivers that i have right now will no longer work if ever i install MAC or Linux.
i also wanna ask your advice with what versions of MAC/Linux should i use? and why?

Answer
linux and mac also have built-in drivers
but some of your drivers have to reinstall them (with Linux and mac versions)

i will recommend you Linux

Linux Advantages (short)
Open Source
its free
less virus

Linux Advantages (full description)

#1 Low cost: You donât need to spend time and money to obtain licenses since Linux and much of its software come with the GNU General Public License. You can start to work immediately without worrying that your software may stop working anytime because the free trial version expires. Additionally, there are large repositories from which you can freely download high quality software for almost any task you can think of.

#2 Stability: Linux doesnât need to be rebooted periodically to maintain performance levels. It doesnât freeze up or slow down over time due to memory leaks and such. Continuous up-times of hundreds of days (up to a year or more) are not uncommon.

#3 Performance: Linux provides persistent high performance on workstations and on networks. It can handle unusually large numbers of users simultaneously, and can make old computers sufficiently responsive to be useful again.

# 4 Network friendliness: Linux was developed by a group of programmers over the Internet and has therefore strong support for network functionality; client and server systems can be easily set up on any computer running Linux. It can perform tasks such as network backups faster and more reliably than alternative systems.

#5 Flexibility: Linux can be used for high performance server applications, desktop applications, and embedded systems. You can save disk space by only installing the components needed for a particular use. You can restrict the use of specific computers by installing for example only selected office applications instead of the whole suite.

#6 Compatibility: It runs all common Unix software packages and can process all common file formats.

#7 Choice: The large number of Linux distributions gives you a choice. Each distribution is developed and supported by a different organization. You can pick the one you like best; the core functionalities are the same; most software runs on most distributions.

#8 Full use of hard disk: Linux continues work well even when the hard disk is almost full.

#9 Multitasking: Linux is designed to do many things at the same time; e.g., a large printing job in the background wonât slow down your other work.

#10 Security: Linux is one of the most secure operating systems. âWallsâ and flexible file access permission systems prevent access by unwanted visitors or viruses. Linux users have to option to select and safely download software, free of charge, from online repositories containing thousands of high quality packages. No purchase transactions requiring credit card numbers or other sensitive personal information are necessary.

#11 Open Source: If you develop software that requires knowledge or modification of the operating system code, Linuxâs source code is at your fingertips. Most Linux applications are Open Source as well.

How to use a webcam as a security camera to view on your ipad and iphone?

best security cameras for mac users image

Sofrito

Hi,
I would like to know if there is a way that I can use a webcam and whats a good app that i can view the video on my iphone or ipad. I have a Mac. Thank you :-)

Answer
Download and install a remote-viewing program on the iMac. The LogMeIn Ignition program is one suitable option (see Resources). Launch the remote-viewing program by double-clicking its icon inside of the "Applications" folder that is inside the main hard drive.

Go to the remote-viewing program's website. Click on the "Registration" button. Fill in the required registration information in the appropriate text fields. Enter a user name and password in the appropriate text fields. Press the "Register" button to complete the registration process. Quit the Web browser.

Click once on the remote viewing program's window to make it active. Select "Registration" from the "File" drop-down menu. Enter the user name and password you had created at the Web page earlier into the text fields of the window that appears. Press the "OK" button to exit the window.

Click the "Sleep/Wake" button at the top of the Apple device, for example, an iPad, that will view the iMac's camera remotely. Swipe the slider on the screen to go to the Home menu. Tap the "App Store" icon to launch the program.

Tap the "Search" icon to bring up a text field. Enter the name of the remote viewing program that is installed on the iMac in the text field using the onscreen keyboard. Tap the remote viewing program's name when it appears in a column beneath the text field.

Is there such thing as a video security system I can buy and install myself that transmits to my PC at home?

BlairLuvr

How do you hook up a security camera to a dvd recorder?

best 16 channel security camera system image

John

i just bought a security camera and a tv from walmart .

I suggest you buy a PC based DVR has they have more processing power and normally have a much smaller file size and offer more features then Standalone DVR's. business question "antique mall owner needing security camera system" which is the best to buy?

sbarber

Just trying to get input from someone that has an antique mall of similar business. I want to purchase a camera system that I can set up in "EACH" booth or atleast every other booth. Some can be dummies but I would like for atleast half of them to be the real deal. I ahve heard of dealers using globes and dummy cameras to deter thieves; does this work?
What system would you recommend and please don't say a 10,000 one, I cant afford that at the moment.

Answer
Hello

Dummy cameras are the worst possible they don't provide security and if someone is injured or claims to be injured in your store they can sue for providing a false sense of security. No professional security installer uses dummy cameras.

Here is a DVR that will work perfectly for you.

http://www.ascendentgroup.com/x4s.htm

I would recommend a Standalone DVR as they are more reliable and since they are linux based they are virus ans spy ware free.

The X4S Series DVR is an intelligent and professional CCTV management solution, integrating the latest technology and the most advanced features while maintaining a simple, intuitive, and graphical interface. The X4S Series DVR is a 24/7 turn key solution that meets demanding security needs to suit industrial and commercial applications. The X4S DVR is compatible with the X4 platform, allowing it to act as an IP server, while still remaining a standalone solution and allows you to view your cameras instantly over the internet with a PC or cell phone like the I-phone.

also here is some information on DVR and cameras you may want to read before buying a CCTV system.

Not all DVRs and security equipment are created equal, in fact there are many options that offer varying performance much like the automobile industry. In the world of DVRs you can find the equivalent of a $10,000 Kia and a $350,000 Ferrari and everything in between. Both have 4 wheels and windshield but that where the similarities end, itâs under the hood that counts. Just like any other consumer electronic in the end you get what you pay for.

I know many people buy a cheap standalone DVR, only to upgrade to a PC based in 6 months especially when they are using it to manage a store remotely. Also PC based allows you to record up to 64 cameras where a standalone will have a limit of 16.

Many people have the misconception that a PC-Based DVR is simply an off-the-shelf PC with video capture (encoder) cards, display (decoder) cards and some generic OEM software. A true DVR requires years of research and development to facilitate the seamless integration of both the hardware and software. DVRs are highly complex systems that must run 24/7, processing millions of images per day. This makes consumer-level hardware inadequate for DVRs which is why Ascendent uses custom-built PCs with performance-level hardware.

My personal favorite DVR is Ascendent X4 series: Ascendentâs Tri-Fusion Hybrid Platform allows for the creation of a true hybrid surveillance system by utilizing the advantages of Analog, Megapixel, and IP technologies for unparalleled customization and expandability.

The X4 also uses the latest H.264/SVC codec offer video substantially better quality,. While its file size sizes is 30% smaller than MPEG-4, 60% smaller than MPEG-2, and exponentially smaller than MJPEG.

File size is crucial to streaming because most DVRâs on the market record at real time performance (30FPS per channel) so on a 4CH is trying to send 120, 8CH 240, and a 16CH 480 images per second which requires way too much bandwidth even for the most extreme internet connections.

Some good DVR brands that I recommend are Bosch, Pelco, Honeywell and Ascendent. These brands are what security professionals use.

I recommend Ascendent as they are less expensive because they cameras for companies like Bosch and Pelco and offer better performance but any of these 3 brands will work well.

These brand manufacturers also have a complete line of CCTV cameras and DVR for any application from residential to military and stand behind there warranties. You want to get a good bran name otherwise you will likely buy a product that work and cant be returned.

how do you install indoor security camera?

I would like to buy a small security camera so I can monitor my home (indoor) when I'm away in a different state. I already have Skype and a camera hooked up an am online. I do not leave my computer on 24/7; I shut it off at night. What all do I need? can I use the camera I have now or do I need to buy a 'security' camera?

Answer
You need to buy a security camera. Regular cameras do not have the same connections that you would need for a security system. You a DVR, and hard drive INSTALLED, cameras, cables, power supply and splitter. Monitor of course but you can use any monitor or tv screen you already have. Most DVRs now have the capability to view the video when you are away from another pc or MAC or from your phone, assuming that you have a smart phone. They are pretty afforadble and convenient, and provide you with peace of mind. You should check out http://www.cctvdirectbuy.com, they provide a large variety of products and help you customize a kit to meet your needs. And their prices are really great.

What the best surveillance cameras for home?

best security camera app for android on Top 5 Android Apps for Beginners and New Android Users | Androizing
best security camera app for android image

Fynest1

Lately, I have people coming to my yard stealing all my stuff. Im almost never home like that because of work. So is what is the best outdoor surveillance cameras that is wireless and can also be viewed from a smart phone? (Android)

Answer
"Best" would be the pro-grade stuff. You should consider setting a budget.

For around $500, Swann and Lorex make decent 4-camera kits (DVR + cameras) that can be accessed remotely - and assumes you have a good knowledge of setting up networks and maintaining network security. It will be a good idea to use outdoor-rated cameras. The cameras with these kits aren't that great, but should be enough to get you started. It is best to install the cameras under the eaves of the house or under some other weather protection (even though they are "outdoor rated"). IP-network cameras cost a lot more, so it is probably best to stay with analog cameras that connect to a DVR that is on the computer network.

When a wired camera is used: A cable with the power and video feed goes from the camera to the DVR. At each end of the cable, there's a plug for power and a plug for video. If there is a mic in the camera, there will be a plug on each side for the mic. If there is Pan/tilt/zoom, there will be another plug for that... but that is all in one cable "bundle".

When a wireless camera is used: The camera needs local power (wire #1). The video is transmitted wirelessly to a base station. The base station connects to power (wire #2) and the DVR (wire #3).

Moral: a wired surveillance camera uses fewer wires than a "wireless" camera.

The DVR can be set up to send you email when certain alarm options are set up in the DVR. That way you don't have to stare at the smartphone all day. A special client needs to be installed on your phone - before you buy, check the ratings on the smartphone app and read the manual (download it from the manufacturer you are considering) to be sure it does what you want.

How to view webcam on my smartphone?

Ira4632

I'm sure there's probably multiple ways of doing this, but here's the situation. I work at a hotel overnight, the night audit shift, and on some nights I have to set up the meeting room down the hall. If someone comes in, I generally won't hear them ringing the bell at the front desk, and I don't really have a good way of monitoring the lobby area, and I'm the only one here. From the back office I can see the security cameras and most of the time I am there. But for the occasional times I have to set up the meeting room, I'd like to be able to keep tabs on the lobby and front desk. I have a laptop computer I can set up so that my webcam will view what I need to see, and I carry a Samsung S-III on the same Wi-Fi (public hotel) network.

What's the best software solution to allow me to view the laptop's webcam on my smartphone. Obviously not looking for a hardwired solution like a dropcam, just using my laptop and a smartphone.

Answer
Yes this is quite simple. I've done something similar to setup a cheap monitoring/recording system for my front door.

First, you need an application on your PC to stream your webcam over the network.
YAWCAM: Is a free, lightweight application that does exactly this
http://www.yawcam.com

1. Download and install Yawcam on your PC.

Then on your phone you will need a "viewer" that supports the same streaming method.
I recommend using MJPEG because it is the simplest to setup, and widely supported.

2. Search the Android Play Store and find a "MJPEG viewer" or "IP cam viewer" or "web cam viewer" that suits your needs. There are several options FREE/paid with different types of features.

3. Setup Yawcam
- Click Settings in top bar
- Click Edit Settings
- Go to Output -> Stream Tab
- Change stream type to MJPEG. (Remember what PORT number is being used!)
- I recommend you setup a password. Go to Password tab to do this.
- After finished press OK to save settings
- On Yawcam main interface make sure "Stream" has a globe beside it. Click to toggle streaming on/off.
- Get your PC's LAN IP. (This is much easier if you are able to setup a static IP/reserved DHCP through your routers settings).

4. Setup your app on your phone using your PC's LAN IP address, the port, and the username/password you entered earlier.

The biggest hassle is obtaining and modifying your IP every time you want to setup your webcam viewer. That is why it helps to be able to use a static IP or create a reservation in the DHCP settings of your router.

If you need any help or further explanation, feel free to contact me through my profile.
Good luck! :)

PS: you could also setup motion detection on Yawcam to send you an email whenever motion is detected in the webcam. This will a bit of extra tinkering though.

Is it illegal to put a hidden camera in a hotel room?

Jason

I am not talking about the hotel itself doing it because I know that ls illegal. Okay so I have found out that by connecting a webcam to your computer and using simple recording software you can turn that webcam into a basic security camera. If I was to use that same setup in my own hotel room to record what goes on when I am not in there, say the maids cleaning the room, could I get into trouble.

Answer
I don't think you can get in trouble.

You could argue that you paid for the room and its yours for the allotted time.

Its close to the same as renting a apt. You sign something like a lease when you rent the room.
You can have a camera on your valuables to keep an eye on them in a room you paid for, no one can stop you from doing that.

How can I use my webcam as a security camera?

profound_0

I work for a security company and we have to use digital cameras for report use. I am wondering if anyone knows about good cameras that are nice and durable for sadly relatively cheap. We can't go more than 130 on the camera. Also if anyone knows a really good durable case since the problem mostly seems to be people dropping the camera.

camera flashing from black to normal display?

Marcel M

security camera works a few seconds, and then goes black. Then comes on for a few seconds, and then goes black; off/on.

Answer
Hello, Many users have problems with web cams. Press the designated button to turn on your camera. If you are using an external camera, use a compatible USB cable to connect the camera to the USB port of your computer.

Visit a website that allows you to test your webcam online. An example of a site you can use include http://www.ehow.com/how_8443971_test-webcam-online.html
Next try this.
Click the "Allow" button from the flash player settings window. You should now see live video footage from your web camera. If you don't see live video, your web camera is not working properly.
To reinstall the drivers try this. Right click on My Computer-> Properties -> Device manager -> Imaging Devices -? Webcam. Right click on the webcam and uninstall it. This will cause the computer to reinstall the drivers and software. Restart the computer and hopefully your problem will be fixed.
Here are a list of sites that will help

a car security camera that always stay on?

i would like to install a security camera to my car in case of vandalism. But most dash cams do not run after power is off.

Any recomendations on a product that will?

Answer
having a camera stay on constantly in your car would probably require you to plug the power for the camera directly to the battery, so what I would do is buy a camera with a very small receiver. Then I would plug that camera into a power inverter that hooks directly into the cars battery. There my be some problems hiding the receiver and its wires.

Security camera for a car to prevent theft and vandalism - any recommendations?

Are there any security systems that are made specifically for cars that you can install in a vehicle? I want something that that records continuously and nonstop that I can use to see what goes on during the night to make sure nobody messes with my car. I want something that I can just put in my car and push record and just go in my house and let the system take care of the rest. I want to be able to view it then on my computer or the system. Any suggestions? Do they make anything like this?

My dad installed security cameras on our property a couple months ago and just yesterday the camera caught a young man snooping in the alley and looking into my dads truck behind the garage at 530 in the morning. Just an interesting side note. My car is always parked across the street were there is no camera pointed in that direction.

Answer
Plenty of Car DVRs are available on Amazon. Though they themselves may be items of interest to a vandal.

Perhaps you should consider a combination of a Car DVR and a CCTV camera mounted on roof of your house with a powerful optical zoom capturing the scene in detail.

A $14 camera that can be connected to a DVR. The camera is small so it can be placed more discreetly and the DVR hidden in the boot. http://www.amazon.com/Waterproof-Vehicle-Backup-High-definition-Viewing/dp/B005CTKYB4%3FSubscriptionId%3DAKIAIZ6BQD7DSLCTLVJA%26tag%3Drajsblo01-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3DB005CTKYB4

It needs to be affordable, I will need to eventually cut holes in it, but it should be a solid material and a perfect half sphere. Think old security dome in a mall. That's kind of what I'm going for, except those don't exist anymore. They were all replaced by smaller cameras. Any ideas?

want to knw abt abt different types of survilence cameras in detail especially mini dome camera?

want to knw abt abt different types of survilence cameras in detail especially mini dome camera?i wish to knw its weaknes and plus

Answer
In detail? There is not enough room to provide detail...

Basically two kinds: Analog and IP/network based. Both can be wired or wireless. Both require a connection for video and power. The video can be wireless. Generally, power is not. Both can be fixed - that is a single field of view - or they can be varial if "pan/tilt/zoom features are added (more expensive). They can be black and white (less expensive) or color (more expensive - or, under good lighting conditions transmit color and when lighting conditions are poor, change to blask and white video. Some have infrared for zero light visibility. Some have mics and can transmit audio, too.

Analog cams can be connected to a TV or TV-like monitor using the yellow composite video RCA jack. Some of them use BNC - BNC-RCA converters are cheap/easy to find. Not dome-camera specific, but for any analog surveillance camera: Analog cams can also be connected to a DVR. Typically multi-channel. Consumer versions are available in 1, 4, 8, 9 and 16 channel units and record to a hard disc drive. The DVR has a minotor out can be connected to a TV or TV-like monitor using the yellow composite video RCA jack. The DVR has various frame rate capture options, alarming options and newer ones can be assigned an IP address and connected to a local area network and made accessible from a computer on the same LAN.

IP/network based surveillance cameras have an embedded web server application and are accessed primarily from a computer on the same network as the camera. Stills and video can be stored off-board on a server somewhere. Obviously, these are assigned an IP address. Many times, there is software available that allows some digital zooming control, but the resolution degrades as digital zoom is used. More expensive units include Pan and tilt capabilities by including a motor in the camera's mounting base. Some even have optical zooming.

On the plus side, the domes can provide some protection from the environment and because of the dome cover, spiders are less like to build webs and reducing visibility. Some dome surveillance cameras can be used for out-door use, and they will be advertised/marked as such. Many are used indoors and the dome is less obvious than a camera pointed at the area under surveillance. It is possible to mount the dome with NO camera in it.

What exactly are you fishing for? The minidome cameras are not much different from other security survelliance cameras from a connection or video transmission perspective... they just happen to be in a dome.
