I'm looking for HD Security Camera's for my dealership... please help!?

Paykaninc

I have a Dealership located in San Diego and I want (outdoor) HD cameras. I really would like to have a blueray DVR or something VERY similar to that because I want the highest quality for DVR and Camera.

I also want Internet enabled so I can remote view it.

So again please help me find a 1080i or 1080p Camera with High def. compression on the DVR with Internet remote access. Thanks!

Also if you can find a camera where you can move it around and zoom in and all, that will be perfect too!

Answer
How about B&H in New York? They also carry a wide variety of surveillance equipment.

How can I operate and record video from a DSLR camera 100% from a PC?

Landen

I am part of the aquatics booster club at a high school and want to mount a high quality video camera (and microphone) onto a fixed position near the pool at a high school to record water polo games. I need the video to be shot in 1080p with decent sound (able to hear whistles and call-outs). The games will be played in the daytime, and should be recorded directly onto a computer hard drive either in a nearby office, or a laptop used by the coaches (who will sit and coach in the pool area). The plan so far is to mount this rig and it's weather proof shelter to a light pole near the pool.
The critical points are:
1.) Camera mounted high up where no one has to touch it to operate it. Everything including turning it on and off has to be done from a computer nearby.
2.) Quality video and decent audio from at least 40 feet away.
3.) No significant operating skills required. No one wants to record video or sound manually on the ground. No one will be willing to edit video or audio or sync anything. All we want to do is burn it to a DVD and be done after every game.
4.) Our budget is $10,000, though we by no means have to spend all of it. If we don't spend it, aquatics can use it for something in following years.

Please help. Our team trains very hard and is very competitive, and we want this to last for years to come and provide video for training and for team viewing purposes. Do we need to hire a professional? Can we pay professionals to install pro-sumer equipment?

Answer
I agree with "airdogspace2" and suggest you get this done professionally.

1) Most dSLRs will overheat and shut down afer about 20 minutes of recording video. Your games probably last longer. than that.

2) Additional requirements: Power. We presume the camera is never dimounted from the pole. There are no batteries that last forever. Run power.

3) Questions: From your description, zoom is not required. Also, panning the camera up/down; left right is not required - if this is required then a whole different set of things happen.

4) Assuming the video is burned to a DVD, as which format? If playable in a computer - as a MOV, MP4 or AVI file... or playable in any regular DVD player? If in a regular DVD player, they can only deal with standard definition video, so the requirement to record in 1080p is unnecessary. If to playback in a computer as a MOV, MP4 or AVI file in high definition a single layer DVD holds only 4.7 gig of data while a double layer DVD holds 8.5 gig of data. I just did a render of a 00:03:38.00 (0 hours: 3 minutes: 38 seconds. 0 frames) of a high quality, 1920x1080p/30 edited video. It was 2.6 gig. Assuming a water polo match is 60 minutes, no one wants to edit, for round numbers, just multiply the 03:38 x 20 - rounding... we also do 2.5 gig x 20 = 50 gig of low compression, high quality video. Then it needs to be compressed. This same 2.6 gig file took about 30 minutes to compress into an MP4 suitable for use on a personal media player to about 130 meg - so that's doable... If only 1 DVD is needed, then 4 minutes to insert a disc and burn remove the disc, mark it...

There's more for video, but we'll hold here for a moment... Now for audio...

If you were to position yourself where a single mic would be placed and not move, chances are pretty good you would not be able to hear call outs "from 40 feet away" - whistles you probably could... To "hear" like that over the area of a pool would need several mics placed closer to the activity - not the camera's built-in mic - and a parabolic mic is too directional. If you have ever watched a televised pro or college basketball game, there are about 30 mics placed up and down the court and an audio person changes the gain on the mics closest to the action - and is very actively involved making adjustments. You don't need this - but perhaps 6 shotgun mics - 3 on each side of the pool, perhaps no more than about 20 feet way mounted on a pole pointed at the pool.

Perhaps the high school has an AV club or computer club (with an emphasis on video capture/editing) that is willing to team up and provide the camera work, editing and such - even do the video providing they get to use your equipment to capture the water polo matches...

Another option is to use high quality commercial grade security cameras and high end video server/recording gear. The video burn will take a while, but the cameras can be outdoor rated and you could use the cameras for other things (security device). If go this route, $10k may not be enough.

A PC user switching to Mac?

Banshee

What are the Pro`s and Cons?I tried mac os before, just for internet use and Photobooth.

Answer
First of all what is the reason for switching? Viruses? Looks? Someone claimed "better"? I would stay with the PC and try Linux first. It's free and more secure.

PC=Variety of specs, options, quality, prices, vendors, support
Mac=One vendor, limited options, still more expensive. Look below for more information..

Today, Macs use a subset of PC hardware. Why spend extra to get the same CPU chips, graphics cards and OS X isn't as secure as you think..

Don't believe the lies that Macs are better than PCs at graphics/animation.. Dreamworks Animation http://www.dreamworksanimation.com/ under studio click on Technology of Animation, an independent film maker I know uses PCs, a graphic artist I used to know uses PCs also.

A number of PCs can also run OS X (Mac OS) http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=os+x+on+pc&btnG=Google+Search&aq=0&oq=os+x+on+ as well just that Apple makes it illegal in order to get Market share.. The reason why Mac can run native Windows is because it is using a subset of PC hardware,

If you decide to buy a Mac for running Windows, you will still have to get the same virus/spyware protection, and run into the same issues as a regular PC.

Now is a Mac worth buying for OS X?

I say: NO... for the following reasons...

ADVANTAGES WINDOWS :
Aprox 90% of the market is Windows and most PCs have windows already pre-installed.
1) Some websites require Internet Explorer, to run IE on Mac you really get ies4osx which is the Windows version of IE running really buggy and illegal if you don't have a legitimate copy of Windows.
2) Supports more devices (printers and other things you hook into the computer).
3) More business software/games
4) Want the dock on OS X (Mac)? google/yahoo rocketdock, objectdoc.
5) Used by businesses.

ADVANTAGES LINUX :
1) FREE (most versions are)
2) Install software by either 1) Synaptic Package Manager, 2) Add/Remove 3) Opening a .deb or .rpm file (depending on distribution)
2) Like the Mac OS X effects? go yahoo/google COMPIZ FUSION which can do any cool effect a Mac can do and many ore....
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E4Fbk52Mk1w
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N3gkX9HDfEE (there is no flickering when you use it like on the video, not sure why the person has the flicker)
3) Mac OS X Doc? google/yahoo Avant Window Navigator.Cairo Dock, http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x3rf5q_cairo-dock-mac-os-x-leopard-dock-on_tech
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p0hzi22g2DE
4) It is FASTER/MORE SECURE to surf on the internet
5) Some Windows programs work with Wnehq/Crossover (also avail on Mac, but why pay $$$)

SECURITY
Mac OS X was hacked in 2006 less than 30 minutes, and within 2 minutes in a contest in 2008, and within 10 seconds in 2009. In 2008, Linux and Vista were not hacked until another day when restrictions were lowered. Vista was next, and then Linux. In 2009 Windows 7 fell shortly after the Mac but Linux was unscathed.
Macs are standardized with Cameras, if your Mac gets hacked, the hacker can turn on your camera with more ease.
Please Note: All OS's have vulnerabilities.

VIRUSES
Mac OS X has viruses (and significantly on the rise), a friend of mine has a virused Mac. As more users use Macs, more viruses will come out for it. Especially when users think "they are safe".

QUALITY/PROBLEMS
Contrary to belief, Macs are not better quality. Apple also has been changing suppliers to try to "lower the price" and thus lowering quality. Even with the lower prices, Macs still cost more, they spend a higher percent of budget trying to make it look pretty, and marketing.

Sample of problems: Overheating Macbooks, OS X- not responding to keyboard, some units with 16bit screens, etc. Apple statistics are misleading since Mac users with problem machines are more likely to go out and buy a new computer than PC users. Apple is lowering prices which means you can expect lower quality than in the past. Apple had switched the manufacturers producing parts. OS X also has problems slowing down.

Repairs are more expensive than PCs since the IMac, Mac Mini are compact units, and Apple charges a premium for their services. Some repairs can be done by another repair service but the compact design of the computer causes problems.
With an IMac, if the problem is with the monitor, the whole computer would have to be brought in.
IMac and Mac mini lack expansion.

PRICE
A similar equipped PC is much cheaper to purchase than Mac. Lets use Dell (but you can compare with another PC Brand if you like)

**(LAPTOP)
Dell Inspiron Laptop Starting Price: $500
Ending Price: $500
15" Screen
CPU: 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo [5% slower]
Graphics: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X4500HD [Not as good/fine for general use[

Macbook Starting laptop Price: $1000
Ending Price After Upgrades: $1200
13" Screen (SMALLER)
CPU: 2.1GHz Intel Core 2 Duo (SLOWER)
Graphics: Nvidia GFORCE 9400 256MB

Hard Drive (upgrade to) 320B Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm (SAME)
http://store.apple.com/us/configure/MC240LL/A?mco=NjcxMTQ3Ng

**(DESKTOP)

PLEASE NOTE: I compare Apple Mac's vs Dells best deal. If you really want an all-in one the Dell all-in-one has more ram, wireless keyboard and mouse and equivalent to $400 for free making the Imac still more expensive when you matching specs. Personally I don't think the All-in-Ones are a good choice, and consider them overpriced, lack expandability and repairs both more expensive and require the entire computer.

PS: Apple knows that they need to make Macintosh look different than PC so all Macs except the Mac Pro will not have a tower option. Apple's low end lacks expandability but it makes the Mac "look different", if Mac had a tower for low-end, more people would realize the similarities between the two.

Dell: ($700)
CPU: 2.33 GHZ Dell Inspiron QUAD (4 Processor) CORE
SCREEN: 20inch Screen
MEMORY: 4GB Ram
HARD DRIVE: 500 GB hard Drive
OPTICAL DRIVE: 16x DVD/CD Read/Writer
GRAPHICS: ATI Radeon HD 512MB
http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?oc=dddwra4&c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&kc=desktop-inspiron-537s

The Mac Mini since it has no monitor, keyboard, mouse, very skimpy on options and setup and is not the best deal... The IMac is better price than the Mac Mini.

IMac ($1300)
CPU: 2.4 GHZ DUAL (2 Processor) CORE (SLOWER CPU)
SCREEN: 20inch Screen
MEMORY: (upgrade to) 4GB Ram (SAME)
HARD DRIVE: (upgrade to ) 320 GB hard Drive (LESS HARD DRIVE)
OPTICAL DRIVE: 8x DVD Reader/Writer (1/2 speed)
GRAPHICS: Nvidia Geforce 9400M (APPROX SAME BUT LESS MEMORY GAPHICS)

how do you handle system security?

mukky

computer virus threats! how do you handle system security?

Answer
I've been taught to use layers of security, or "defense in depth".
Most of these practices & policies will be done over and over again - not a one-time fix, but a process.

At the lowest level, (your machine) - evaluate and address physical security. Do you need to keep this in a locked room so nobody tampers with it? Evaluate & update BIOS and Firmware if appropriate. Remove or block USB, CD/DVD and other drives if necessary.

Next level, the operating system: no matter what you use (Linux, Win, mac, others) make sure you limit administrator or root access and make strong passwords for all users.
(For Windows this means 15+ characters), Patch the OS on a regular schedule, and make sure to disable or remove any services or programs that aren't needed.
If this is a critical system, then some system-file checking system should be used. Make sure that system files haven't changed unless you change them. Update your information regularly, and keep the tables or checksums that you collect from that machine in a safe place (your only copy should not be on the same machine).
Turn on logging, and if practical - store the logs on another machine where they can't be easily tampered with.

Next level, applications: only install what you need, and clean up anything you remove. Manually verify that patches are done on a systematic schedule. Check for security 'best practices' - stuff like "chroot"-ing an Apache install, and input-verification on SQL-like databases. Again, if practical, log events and check file checksums.
Limit user access to application on a need-to-have basis.

Next level, loss prevention: Here's where your firewall, anti virus, anti-malware and user policies come in. Keep all users (even your admins) to the least privileges to get a job done. Have a system to add new users and remove old ones. Keep AV & other security apps patched, and make sure it is working.
If your users will comply, then training is a good thing. Explain why they can't use myspace / utorrent / aim on critical work machines, and hold them accountable if they do violate policy.
(* as Scheiner says, I think it was something like this.. users will try to step across policy bounds, and if your policy isn't enforced, word gets out fast. A poorly enforced policy is useless. Don't waste time making them.)
Review your firewall policy on some schedule, so you can tell if changes were made without authorization.
Review policies on a set schedule - everything from changing keys to the server room, changing passwords, who has night/ weekend access, whether devices like CDs and USB can be booted from or 'autoplay'-able.
Use a UPS (power supply) and keep the machines off the ground where water, bugs, or clumsy employees can damage them.
Write this stuff down as a policy, and be prepared to justify it to outsiders if you keep anybody else's data.

Next level: recovery planning
Frequent backups, of course.
Check those backups .. verify that you actually have a working backup, and check them for viruses. If practical, keep backups off-site. If you can technically perform and/or afford clustering, virtualization, or other fail-over solutions, then split your work up over 2 or more machines. If one fails, be ready to move to the backup. Lots of ways to do this in hardware or software.. one hardware package I recently read about was Novell's (just bought) "PlateSpin".

Put in some system so you (or appropriate people) get some kind of auto-message from your UPS if power fails, or get called if your network goes down. Your recovery plan needs a start point - usually something other than " Monday AM, the CEO calls and complains". Try to avoid that one :)

Depending on how critical your systems are, you may want to have 24/365 monitoring including video camera or recorded logs of swipe/key access to the server rooms.

Network security is a whole 'nuther animal.
Again, layers of security..
block ports you don't need, firewall users/ IPs you don't need, use a VPN if you can, change default passwords on routers & switches, restrict physical and virtual access.. etc.

Need help w/ outdoor security camera system.?

melissa

I need to buy an outdoor security camera system. Night vision and distance are a must. Need at least 4 cameras. Any recommendations? This will be my first security cam purchase so any info will be greatly appreciated! oh yeah, I'd prefer a reasonably priced system... Like maybe below $600 and still a good system. Thanks for the help 8-)

Answer
Hello

Peter that is the worst advise I have heard in a long time Costco, Walmart and online companies like Lorex (coscto sells lorex) sell very low quality cameras and often don't offer watermark so there images cant even hold up in court.

Giving advice when you don't know what your talking about is like giving direction to a place you don't now where it is, all you doing is wasting there time and in this case there money too.

The cameras from costco and walmart are used as nanny cameras that's all there good for.
Most IR cameras give you about 1/3 of the vision as advertised they call it "projected" distance now this had no coloration with what the camera will actually see at night.

A Varifocal (can change what the camera can see) lens with a good aperture 2 good examples are 5-50mm or 2.9~10mm. A fixed lens almost never works when installing a camera outdoors. Again to ensure you are getting a good lens and optics stick to name brands and avoid online retailers, eBay, Swann Lorex, Costco and Q see and other cheap no name products.

Also if you are buying good cameras get a decent DVR.

A good outdoor Camera will have

High resolution (520TVL or higher)
Good signal to noise ratio (S/N 49DB or 50DB)
A true Sony CCD (not Chinese knockoff)
Rugged enclosure to handle vandals and environments
At least IP 66 and a suitable temperature rating for you region
IR LED's to see in pitch dark: active IR rating not projected IR as projected IR has no coloration with how far the camera can see.
2 or 3 different sized LED;s 1 size LED one type of illumination means you either wont get distance or wide angle and you want both.

I would go with the VIS-56IR-2910
http://dealer.ascendentgroup.com//dvr-irâ¦

this camera will give you 110 feet of clear vision in complete darkness and great images by day its the on I recommend for budget customer who need outdoor IR camera.

Cameras that have high resolution, and great signal to noise ratio can reducing file size on DVR's up to 50% and offer better images.

Low budget Economical
ASC-520B21IR-36

520TVL
see 25 feet outdoors
Fixed 3.6mm lens
35~-25C IP 66
MSRP $110.00

Cheap option would never suggest a camera lower then this one
(still much higher quality then Costco, Lorex, Swann, Qsee, and other no name products imported from china)

ASC-380B24IR-36
Infrared Bullet Camera
380TVL
see 25 feet outdoors
Fixed 3.6mm lens
35~-25C IP 66
MSRP $75.00

Not all CCTV equipment is created equal, in fact there are many options that offer varying performance much like the automobile industry. In the world of CCTV you can find the equivalent of a $2,000 golf cart and a $350,000 Ferrari and everything in between. Both have 4 wheels but that's where the similarities end, itâs under the hood that counts.

Just like any other consumer electronic in the end you get what you pay for. Most retailers and sellers make about a 40-80% profit margin, this is after costs like shipping and overhead. That means when you buy a product that costs $100.00 the manufacturer usually has only spent $30 to build it which simply means itâs not a good product and will probably have a working life of about 2 months. There is a reason these products are 1/10 of the price of good and reliable DVR brand names. The type of seller these products attract are online sellers (ebay) and will make profits margins as low as 2% which means they canât afford to offer good service or allow for RMAs (returns). Cheap products are like disposable razors they are NOT designed to last for a long time and you will end up replacing them every 2 months.

Ascendent makes cameras fir military and critical infrastructure so you know there good quality and there price is about 20% below Bosch and Pelco and offer higher specs and performance.
Not the cheapest but they are the best bang for the buck.

How much should a basic security camera system cost a company?

There have been some car window break-ins at my gym (at TWO branches in different towns that I know of) and these are small parking lots, basically around the building. Last night was my turn. I'm sure they have a sign somewhere saying "not our responsibility" but they should want to keep their paying members a little safer without raising our dues too much.

They already beefed up the way members scan ID's to get into the gym.

I want to suggest some better outdoor security to them. Cameras or other alternatives?

Answer
Please try http://www.security-cameras-cctv.com

It offers surveillance cameras, camera system, cctv security system, remote monitoring with hidden cameras at affordable price.

wat's the best commercial security camera with resonable price?

It's for my pizza restaurant. Thanks!!!

Answer
I have found the best prices at 2M CCTV.
You will want a camera with infared and a CCD sensor, as you will probably need it most at night. It won't be cheap, but certainly worth the investment.

Should I upgrade my iphone 3gs to a 5s?

binfordaep

I currently have an iphone 3gs as my personal cell phone. I have had this model of phone since the day it came out in 2009. This is my third one as the other two have broken and been replaced through apple care. I've had this one since January 2012. I keep getting new phones through work - an iphone 4s in January 2012 and a Galaxy S3 in January 2013, which is the reason I haven't bothered to upgrade my personal phone.

Overall, I'm relatively happy with the phone, although I have noticed it has gotten much slower since I installed ios6 on it. My only real gripe with it is that it has no light on it and the camera sucks (however, I have my S3 in the rare instance I need a camera or a light).

So basically, I'm looking for someone to make a convincing argument as to why I should/shouldn't get a new phone given the circumstances. That is, I currently have a device that does exactly what I need it to: it calls, texts, emails, goes on the internet and runs simple apps (e.g. maps, banking, yelp - I don't really use any processor intensive apps like 3D games). I basically never watch videos on it and use it for music about twice a month. As far as I can tell, the 5s isn't any better at calling, texting, or emailing than the 3gs. Basically, I feel like I am paying for it to be slightly faster and have a better display and camera which is similar to the one on my S3.

Please justify why this is/isn't worth $200 given that I also have an S3 that I can use for pretty much anything I want except browsing work restricted websites (porn).

I am not concerned with contract terms, etc. so this comes down to whether or not it is worth upgrading this phone for $200 or waiting until it dies so I got every last dollar of utility out of it.

Answer
Yes you should, A TON of reasons why

1) iOS 7, the 3GS is too old to run iOS 7 which is a beautiful new operating system

2) Its not slightly faster its WAY faster, with the new A7 chip you'll notice a BIG difference between the 3GS and the 5S

3) Siri, the personal voice assistant, can help you set reminders make phone calls, and even Tweet and post to Facebook

4) Touch ID, the biggest feature of the iPhone 5s this fingerprint scanner offers a high level of security, all you need to do is place your finger on the home button and it unlocks.

The 5c is a good substitute it has the same specs as an iPhone 5 and is about $100 cheaper than the 5s

iPhone virgin mobile?

Chris

I want to get the iphone 5s from virgin mobile which is for $385. I live in New York and my dad thinks I should get it in florida since I'm moving there in the summer and he believes it will be cheaper and other nonsense. If I get the iphone from New York and I move to florida nothing will change right? I will still have my service and all? Also every how long can I get a new iphone with virgin mobile (if it's possible at all)

Answer
hear are all the specs for the iphone 5s

iPhone 5S (marketed with a stylized lowercase 's' as iPhone 5s) is a smartphone developed by Apple Inc. It is part of the iPhone line, and was released on September 20, 2013. Apple held an event to formally introduce the high-range phone, and its mid-range counterpart, the iPhone 5C, on September 10, 2013. The iPhone 5s is the successor to the iPhone 5.
As with the principle of the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4S, the iPhone 5S is a revised version of its predecessor, iPhone 5. The phone maintains a very similar design to its predecessor, aside from the introduction of a new home button design using a laser-cut sapphire cover surrounded by a metallic ring, Touch ID, a fingerprint recognition system built directly into the home button which can be used to unlock the phone and authenticate Store and iTunes Store purchases, and an updated camera with a larger aperture and a dual-LED flash optimized for different color temperatures. It also introduced the A7 dual-core processor, the first 64-bit processor to be used on a smartphone, accompanied by the M7 "motion co-processor", a dedicated processor for processing motion data from its accelerometer and gyroscopes without requiring the attention of the main processor. It was also the first Apple device to ship with the newest version of the iOS mobile operating system, iOS 7, which introduced a revamped visual appearance and other new features.
Reception towards the device was generally positive, with some outlets considering it to be the best smartphone available on the market due to its upgraded hardware, Touch ID, and other changes introduced by iOS 7. However, others criticized iPhone 5S for being too similar to its predecessors, while others showed security concerns about the Touch ID system. iPhone 5S, along with iPhone 5C, sold nine million units on their weekend of release, breaking Apple's sales record for iPhones. iPhone 5S was the best selling phone on all major US carriers in September 2013.

History[edit]

The front of 4 Infinite Loop at the Apple Campus.
The iPhone 5S was announced during a keynote at 4 Infinite Loop on September 10, 2013.
Before its official unveiling, media speculation primarily centered around reports that the next iPhone would include a fingerprint scanner; including Apple's July 2012 acquisition of AuthenTec, a developer of mobile security products,[7] references to a fingerprint sensor on the home button in the beta release of iOS 7[8] and leaked packaging for an iPhone 5S showing that the traditional home button now had a metallic "ring" around it. Similar ring-based imagery was seen on the official invite to Apple's iPhone press event in September 2013, where the new device was unveiled.[9] Shortly before its official unveiling, The Wall Street Journal also reported the rumor.[10][11]
Apple announced iPhone 5C and iPhone 5S during a media event at its Cupertino headquarters on September 10, 2013.[12][13] While iPhone 5C became available for preorder on September 13, 2013, iPhone 5S was not available for preorder, however was released on the same day as the 5C, September 20, 2013.[14] While most of the promotion focused on Touch ID, the 64-bit Apple A7 was also a highlight during the event:
This is the first-ever 64-bit processor in a phone of any kind. I donât think the other guys are even talking about it yet. Why go through all this? The benefits are huge. The A7 is up to twice as fast as the previous-generation system at CPU tasks, and up to twice as fast at graphics tasks, too.
âPhil Schiller, Apple keynote at 4 Infinite Loop on September 10, 2013[15]
Schiller then showed demos of Infinity Blade III to demonstrate the A7's processing power and the device's camera using untouched photographs.[16] The release of iOS 7 on September 18, 2013, was also announced during the keynote.[16]
On September 20, 2013, iPhone 5S was released in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, China, France, Germany, Australia, Japan, Hong Kong, and Singapore.[17] It was released in 25 additional countries on October 25, 2013, and in 12 countries on November 1, 2013. Indonesia was the last country to receive the iPhone 5S with its release date being the 26 January 2014.[18]

Operating system and software[edit]
Jonathan Ive designed iOS 7, which uses a flat and colorful design in comparison to the glossy look of iOS 6, which also incorporated skeuomorphic elements.
Main articles: iOS and iOS 7
Further information: iOS version history, iTunes Radio, and AirDrop
The iPhone 5S features iOS, Apple's mobile operating system.[19] The user interface of iOS is based on the concept of direct manipulation, using multi-touch gestures. Interface control elements consist of sliders, switches, and buttons.[20] Interaction with the OS includes gestures such as swipe, tap, pinch, and reverse pinch, all of which have specific definitions within the context of the iOS operating system and its multi-touch interface. Internal accelerometers are used by some applications to respond to shaking the device (one common result is the undo command) or rotating it vertically (one common result is switching from portrait to landscape mode).[20]
iPhone 5S is supplied with iOS 7, released on September 20, 2013.[21] Jonathan Ive, the designer of iOS 7's new elements, described the update as "bringing order to complexity", highlighting features such as refined typography, new icons, translucency, layering, physics, and gyroscope-driven parallaxing as some of the major changes to the design.[22] The design of both iOS 7 and OS X Mavericks (version 10.9) noticeably depart from skeuomorphic elements such as green felt in Game Center, wood in Newsstand, and leather in Calendar, in favor of flat, colourful design.[22]
The phone can act as a hotspot, sharing its Internet connection over WiFi, Bluetooth, or USB, and also accesses App Store, an online application distribution platform for iOS developed and maintained by Apple. The service allows users to browse and download applications that were developed with Xcode and the iOS SDK and were published through Apple.[23]
iOS 7 adds AirDrop, an ad-hoc WiFi sharing platform. Users can share files with the iPhone 5 onwards, the iPod Touch (5th generation), iPad (4th generation), or iPad Mini.[24][25] The operating system also adds Control Center, which gives iOS users access to commonly used controls and apps. By swiping up from any screenâincluding the Lock screenâusers can do such things as switch to Airplane mode, turn Wi-Fi on or off, adjust the display brightness and similar basic functions of the device. It also includes a new integrated flashlight function to operate the reverse camera's flash LED as a flashlight.[26] The iPhone 5S functions as a media player, and includes Apple Maps and Passbook. The mapping application includes turn-by-turn navigation spoken directions, 3D views in some major cities and real-time traffic.[27] Users can rotate their device horizontally to landscape mode to access a collage of album covers.
The 5S includes Siri, an intelligent personal assistant and knowledge navigator. The application uses a natural language user interface to answer questions, make recommendations, and perform actions by delegating requests to a set of Web services. Apple claims that the software adapts to the user's individual preferences over time and personalizes results.[28] iOS 7 adds new male and female voices, new system setting functionalities, a redesign to match the rest of the operating system, and integration with Twitter, Wikipedia, Bing, and Photos.[29] Facebook comes integrated through Apple's native apps. Facebook features can be directly accessed from within native apps such as Calendar which can sync Facebook events, or use Facebook's like button from within the Apple App Store.[30][31] iTunes Radio, an internet radio service, is also included on iPhone 5S. It is a free, ad-supported service available to all iTunes users, featuring Siri integration on iOS. Users are able to skip tracks, customize stations, and purchase the station's songs from iTunes Store. Users can also search through their history of previous songs.[32]

Surveillance cameras?

Can I use non-network surveillance cameras and somehow display and record the videos on a computer? Is there a way it can connect to a network? Also, the wires used to connect the cameras to the tv look like phone cables, only a bit larger, but not as large as ethernet cables. Any ideas?

Answer
You can connect analogue cameras to a PC using a capture device (or sometimes called a DVR card). You either fit these cards inside your computer, or use cheaper USB versions like the one from Grandtec http://www.grandtec.com/products/surveillance/xguardusb.html which is easier to install. This will allow you to watch & record video on your PC as well as give remote access.

For genuine network based solutions, you would need a video server which converts analogue video source to IP video stream, like the Axis video server. You can use this with CCTV surveillance software like EyeSoft from BiKal IP CCTV http://www.bikal.co.uk/network-surveillance/ip-software.html which allows you to connect analogue and IP cameras to your computer.

It sounds like you have RJ11 connectors on your cables. You can convert these to standard CCTV connections. Type in RJ11 to BNC in your favourite search engine to find your nearest dealer.

Cheap surveillance cameras?

Lauren

I want to put up some small, easy to hide/be hidden cameras around my property and house. Preferably ones that let me stream the live video feed to my laptop. The cheaper the better. Post everything you find. Thanks.

Answer
"Cheap" generally denotes poorly made and fast to break requiring replacement.

A better suggestion is to buy the value and "less expensive". Generally, you get what you pay for.

Before we go too far... there are basically two different technologies and both work fine.

1) Analog cameras connected to a security DVR that is connected to the local area network. The DVR generally has a hard drive and embedded operating system that records the video and the network connectivity provides for computer or smartphone access.

2) IP based cameras connected directly to the local area network. If video is to be stored, generally, some sort of network device is needed to record the video. Sometimes this is a "network attached" storage device. Sometimes this is a computer dedicated to do nothing else but record/store the video. The cameras are contacted directly by your laptop (or smartphone.

In either case, we assume you have a need for night vision. Even if you don't, the cameras still need some sort of power. We assume there is power available to these "hidden" areas where you want to install the cameras.

Your requirement of "cameras around my property" tells me that you need outdoor rated cameras. These are generally more expensive than "indoor only" cameras.

"Wireless" is deceiving... we already know that the camera needs power - so that is basically one wire. With an IP based camera system, then the wifi at your house needs to be on and the cameras all need to be on that network - and when you add the network attached storage device or computer for recording the video, then all that configuration and attention is needed. And wires. If the cameras are analog connecting to a network connected DVR, then the cameras send only the video wirelessly to a base station "mate". Each camera has its own base station. The base station needs power (another wire) and the base station video connection plugs into the DVR (another wire) and the DVR plugs onto the network (another wire).

I strongly suggest using known, decent quality gear. I've learned the hard way that when you go "cheap" you pay for it 3-4 times more than if you target decent quality for a few more dollars.

For residential, consumer grade, equipment, I like/use/own/installed on my property, equipment from Swann and Lorex. The analog cameras are usually wired and start at around $140 each (outdoor rated and night vision). The cameras included with the DVR kits will get replaced pretty quickly, but are a good place to start and learn how everything works. Getting an 8-camera or 16 camera network enabled DVR allows you to grow the system with other cameras as you identify the need and you don't make the entire investment upfront. The DVR also has a video output so if you want, you can attach that to TVs throughout the house (with a spare AV-input) and computer connection is available (through the computer network) but not required for monitoring.

D-link makes decent IP network based cameras. You can use whatever windows based computer to be the storage computer - assuming it has enough available hard drive space to store the amount of video you want stored. Network Attached storage devices are cool - but have their own maintenance and administration issues to deal with. Getting this video on non-computer or non-smartphone monitors (like a TV) is difficult.

In either case, accessing the video when you are connected to the local area network (wired or wireless) is generally relatively easy to do - if you need to access the video from a remote location, then you need to be sure the access to the home network through the router is secured and that takes a different skill-set...

At the pro-level, Pelco makes good gear. It is by no means "cheap", but is robust...

Security system cameras?

drew S

is there a system where i can place my cameras on a certain spot and be able to access the cameras from some place different

Answer
Drew,

Not exactly sure what you mean. I assume you would like to have a security camera at home and would like to be able to remotely access the cameras to view them.

Yes you can certainly do this. It is actually a fairly simple thing to do.

There are a couple of ways to do this. If you use an analog system you would purchase a DVR that would have a network connection that you can access via the internet. The cameras would connect to the DVR with coax cables. You would also need to provide power to each camera. The DVR would be recording what you need and would allow you to access it to view your cameras.

Another way to do this is with IP Cameras also called Network Cameras. They will usually come with software that you can install on your PC and be able to access the view of the cameras that way. Most IP cameras can be accessed directly from a web browser.

Hope that helps.

What's the best surveillance camera system for home security?

brittany

...preferably something not really expensive but decent, and with motion detector (and night vision)?

Answer
Hello,

A good camera system is available but you need to decide what areas you want to cover. Did you just want to watch outside or inside too? Just the doors or the driveway and the backyard. Camera systems can be a waste of money if you don't have them on and recording.
You need to do a site survey as well , go ahead and walk around the outside of the house, where would you try to get in? Are there woods behind the house?

A good thief has no problem driving up your driveway and walking right in the house so your neighbors would not think anything of it. Placing the cameras to cover all the ways a person could walk up to the house is the most important thing, its better to spend a few dollars more today with extra cameras rather than pay the deductible on your insurance

An inexpensive system like this complete camera system http://www.spyville.com/svat-cv300-4ch-001.html will have all the features you want, like night vision and motion activation. This system will do that and record for months at a time and allow you to view the video remotely on the internet. in some cases you can even view on your Iphone or Smart phone like blackberry and droid.

Security Cameras, no need for power adaptor?

braveheart

Were looking for a security camera system that is not only wireless but also does not require a wall outlet for it to be plugged into. does a camera like that exist out there?

Answer
Wireless security cameras are generally a part of any quality home security system. They provide more substantial protection than motion detectors, are less annoying than elaborate alarm systems, and provide additional benefits associated with video surveillance. The best security systems almost always employ multiple home security features, but if you're trying to get the most for your money, a few, well-placed, wireless security cameras are a great way to get a lot from a single security feature. http://www.homesecuritycontrol.com/security-cameras.php

What is the best security camera for the home security?

A) IP camera
B) Dome Camera

http://www.aditgroup.com/CCTV-Camera.html

Answer
It depends on the requirements. But your question is confusing. IP (Internet Protocol) is merely the network connection the camera has. Usually, an IP camera - for home use - is not "outdoor rated". Some are... Usually, the IP camera has nowhere to store the video, so a video server or dedicated computer is required if the video needs to be stored.

A "dome camera" is a camera in a dome. It can be IP or analog. If it is an IP camera, then the above paragraph applies. If it is an analog camera, it will need some sort of connectivity to a DVR for video storage and the DVR can be connected to the computer network.

We don't know:
what computer network might be available;
whether you need outdoor rated cameras;
how long - if at all - the video storage needs to be;
whether computer or smartphone access is needed... and lots more.

Without this information, selecting *best* is impossible.

I can choose any tablet I want but how much should I actually ask for?

Cymbeline

So my mother says for graduation she'll get me any tablet I want since I recently had mine stolen when I was mugged (that's another story). I'm a web/graphic designer who does a lot of coding and knows how to completely take apart an operating system and put it back together and I find it entertaining to do so that I can customize features to my liking.

I want a top of the line tablet but I don't want to ask for too much so I'm willing to settle for something in the middle. I DO NOT WANT AN IPAD! REPEAT I DO NOOOOOOT WANT AN IPAD!

The thing is I don't think my mother understands what she's saying. I think in reality she's not going to want to spend more than $200-300 however she's bought herself an iPad and she's buying herself another $350 android tablet even though she already has the iPad,iPhone 4S and a kindle so maybe she'll be okay with spending a little more.

I want an android tablet that's not going to suddenly become "out dated" in a month or so. I don't want a Kindle Fire or a Nook Tablet/Color and nothing by Pandigital.

I would use it to play games and read ebooks as well as surf the internet and shop. I wouldn't use it for music or videos but I want a beautiful clear resolution and a fast processor. I also want it to be a little bit bigger than 7in.

Thank You so much for any suggestions!

Hit and run accident in school parking lot with security cameras- What do I do?

WAHOO

My car was hit today at my school between 11:30am and 1:05pm in the parking lot while I was in class. It is on the back of my car so I didnt notice until I got home. I called my school to ask them if they could look at the cameras and see who did it and they said they cant do anything because I left. Im really pissed cause I only have liability and I want to file a police report so they will be forced to pull up the cameras. What do I do? I know for a fact that my school files insurance claims/police reports for accidents in the parking lot because it happens often. Am I out of luck JUST because I went home? This does not seem fair. It was clearly a hit and run, and they could very well see it if they just brought up the cameras.
the police are useless!!!!! they wont do anything because i left campus

Answer
File a Police report immediately. Remember to mention the security cameras to the police and have them mention it in the report. Ask the officer you report it to to ask the school not to destroy or tape-over that specific tape. Most recordings are on a loop and begin taping over the old stuff as soon as 24hours later, but usually 50 hours or more so they can look back after being gone all weekend. Ask the police officer if he/she can assist you in recovering a copy of the tape for insurance purposes.

Tell you insurance company the same. Mention the security recording to them also. With the insurance and the police asking I'm sure the school will be more abliged to help.

Installing video camera to watch parking lot outside home. cheap?

sodone!

Recently my car was broken into and a neighbor's car was just stolen last night. I want to put a camera in the window facing the parking lot and turn it on at night. I'd like to record the evenings events each night. How can I do this on the cheap? What do I need to buy?

Answer
Is there power available where you need the camera to be or are you planning to run a cable to the camera? Oddly enough, "wireless" cameras" use more wires than wired cameras...

If you are willing to leave your computer on 24x7 (using all the hard disc space to record the video), then install a "security camera card" in the computer. Most would likely get a security DVR and not burden their computer with the surveillance camera work (and hard disc drive space).

How's the weather where you are? Most electronics have cold/heat/humidity ranges they need to operate properly, so if your area gets snow, that will probably be too cold for most security cams - a heated housing can be used. These are expensive.

Simple:
4-channel standalone security DVR and a single wired camera. Mount the camera under the eave of the building, run the cable to the DVR. The DVR is inside. The wire will carry the video signal to the DVR and power for the camera. Budget $500.

Anyone know pricing on security camera install?

MAKAVELI

I want to have 4 security cameras installed in a store but am not sure how much to pay someone to do it does anyone know what a decent amount to pay is? Its a 4 camera system that is wired and a computer that needs to be installed and setup any prices will be helpful. Thanks,
Well thanks for the thorough answer but what I meant was how much is a decent amount to pay for the installation of a four camera wired system? I already have the cameras I just want them installed but dont want to low ball the person he is charging me $250 right now but i told him i was shopping around still i think hell do it for $200?

Answer
With camera and survelience systems, you get what you pay for. Generally, the more you pay, the better features you get, and the more reliability. I would expect to pay at least $3k for a basic system. Here are some pointers:

1. Unless you just want the cameras for show, don't go with an off the shelf system like you can get at Costco or Sam's Club.

2. Don't do business with any company that hasn't been selling/installing cameras for at least four years. Ask for references.

3. Don't buy a Windows based camera system. Get one that is optimized for Camera usage. Many camera systems these days are based on custom implementations of Linux - a far better solution than Windows.

4. Don't cheap out on camera's. Good cameras + good recorder = better results. A camera system won't do you any good if you can't identify the people/cars/etc that your trying to record.

5. Buy a system that can handle at least 4 camera's more than you need right now. It is easier and less expensive in the long run to grow a system by just adding camera's than it is to replace the recorder.

6. Don't pay for your system and installation all at once. Have your purchase and installation contract broken down into stages - something like 25% deposit with order, 25% on delivery, 25% on installation and 25% due within 30 days of commissioning. Otherwise you could run into a situation where the camera company closes it's doors, or runs off with your money. I've seen this happen more than once.

I spent four years with a company that sold camera's and recording equipment as a side line. We were rather expensive compared to some of our competitors, because our main focus was another product line. However, on more than one occasion, people who went with the lowest bid often ended up coming to us for help upgrading or replacing their systems because of their good experiences with our other equipment. I saw more than one customer have the camera guy do a partial installation, then take off with the rest of the money, leaving the customer with no camera system. I also saw several customers get disgusted with their Windows based systems and either replace them entirely, or just stop using them at all.

Addressing your clarification: in my mind, $250 for installing the cameras is not only reasonable, it's extremely cheap. Most installers I'm aware of charge an average of between $50 and $125 an hour (depending upon your area). Depending upon the layout of the cameras and construction details of your building, I would figure an hour or two per camera, plus an hour or two to set up the recorder. My old company would have charged a minimum of $500 for the install, our typical install fee was $1500. Remember that iinstalling the cameras is more than just running the wires and mounting the cameras. It is also making sure they're pointed in the right directions, focused well, etc. Good luck.

who knows walmarts security camera layout? anyone work for walmarts loss prevetion team? please elaborate ..?

good security camera system for home?

vs2009

I have a budget of max $300 for a good security camera system to monitor my backyard and front of the house, any suggestions?

Answer
You may have trouble finding a reliable and working camera system for only $300. I might suggest saving up a little more to add to your budget if at all possible. Good wireless cameras are going to run $180-$400+ for each camera. The ones you can buy at Wal-Mart or whatever don't work very well and are more trouble than they're worth.

You should check out either SafeMart or Home Security Store. Home Security Store is more like a "home depot" for alarm system equipment.

Here's a good article on camera systems and a link to a review of SafeMart. Hope this helps.

Security Camera Question?

Patient Pa

I just moved into a new neighborhood and have had some issues with (what I believe to be) one of my neighbors. I have a set schedule every day and my roommates schedule varies (no one is home at all times to watch), but one particular neighbor has been trespassing and verbally harassing my pets.

We've caught him shining lights through our windows (from his property) at night as well as caught him harassing my dog through our front window. I want a camera to record these behaviors so I can go to the cops with confidence that something will be done about it.

I'd like to get a security camera that records to my laptop while I'm at work, and I can review it when I get home. I would like to place it on my second story wall (ample power supply there).

I was looking at this camera: http://www.amazon.com/VideoSecu-Bullet-Outdoor-Security-Infrared/dp/B001IBFSJ8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1312832168&sr=8-1

But I have absolutely no clue what it records to or anything like that. Any camera suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Also, if there's a camera that can record to a USB device or the like and THEN I can review it on my laptop that would work fine. It needs to record at least 8 hours (while I'm at work.)

Answer
That camera isn't bad, but you probably don't need anything that elaborate. My suggestion would be to get a simple, but good quality, webcam and a USB extension cable. Look for a camera that has decent resolution, and is fairly small thus making it easy to conceal. You can easily record a webcam session for review when you get home.

IMPORTANT NOTE: DO NOT RECORD AUDIO! You'll noticed that whenever you see video surveillance images on the news and other shows that there is never any sound. The reason for this is because unattended recording of audio can be considered to fall under the illegal wiretapping provisions of federal (and in many cases state) law. It's stupid, I know, but there it is. You don't want to end up getting in trouble yourself while trying to protect yourself and your four-legged friends.

Good luck!

well, you certainly dont need a 2300 dollar web surfing machine. if all you really do is run office and surf the web, get a PC and save a grand or so. if you want a mac, get one. but just dont think you 'need' one...for surfing the web.

What kind of security camera should I get to view behavior from a different location?

xtheximper

I need a camera to put in my workshop. This location has electricity, but does not have internet. My home is about 500 feet away from my workshop. I need to be able to view activity from my home at any time. I want a camera that I can simply plug in to work or that will work wirelessly. Any ideas of cameras I could use for security purposes?

how to set up a security camera system?

Rachael

Answer
1.Determine where security cameras should be placed. For the home and the business, any areas that have high traffic or items of value are prime locations for cameras. Also, consider placing cameras where break-ins or acts of vandalism are more likely to occur.

2.Optimize camera placement. Once you have determined where the cameras should go, plan for the least amount of wiring and the widest viewing angles for each camera. Since there are only so many cameras included per kit, it is best to utilize each one as much as possible before resorting to purchasing additional cameras to connect to the camera control unit.

if some one could help me that would be great.
thanks

Answer
Nathan that is the worst advice I have heard if you don't know about CCTV products please do not post and mislead people tigger direct sell complete junk.

Now some products can be made cheaply like ipod cases, screen protectors, and other simple products with no moving parts or electronics. DVRs need to be good quality as they run 24/7 (20X more than the average electronic device) and process anywhere from 30-480 frames per second which in a year is over 15 billion images, and a good DVR should last 3-5 years.

A true DVR and camera require years of research and development to facilitate the seamless integration of both the hardware and software. DVRs are highly complex systems that must run 24/7, processing millions of images per day and are one of the few products that canât be made both well and cheaply. Cheap and inexpensive products like Q-see, X10, Swan, Lorex, and other low grade DVRâs and cameras sold by Tiger Direct, Newegg, radio shack Sams Club, are not used by any security professional and should only be used by hobbyists.

To be honest Swan sells complete Garbage and is not used by anyone who has worked with CCTV or security products. I know other manufactures who used the same product as them and they felt they wee such poor quality they offered money back and replaced them at there cost. They are poor quality especially for IR cameras, due to low quality material, low S/N ratio, and c grade CCD image chips.

If you are only going to spend 70$ on cameras then you should buy 15 dummy cameras they will be just as effective and cheaper hen swan cameras.

Also as far as night vision or IR cameras go most do not give good images in the dark. Many companies claim good night vision but there are only a handful of brands who give night vision over 30 feet out doors. normally if a cameras is rated 150 feet of IR it will give you ok images at 30 feet at night and good images at about 20 if rated for 60 feet you might get 15 indoors and will be useless outdoors.

Some good CCTV brands that I recommend are Bosch, Pelco, Honeywell and Ascendent.

http://www.ascendentgroup.com (Great IR cameras)
www.honeywell.com
www.pelco.com/
http://www.bosch.com

Economical DVR's
Two good economical DVRs I would recommend are Ascendent's AVP-4120 DVR or Pelco's DX-400. They will allow you to view all your cameras instantly from anywhere in the world using either IE, or a client software. The AVP-4120 uses the latest H.264 codec to improve streaming and recording time, and will allow PCs and Apple computers to remotely view cameras. These are the DVRs I would recommend that are good quality and affordable from companies who stand behind there products.

Again if you are going to buy Swan products save money and get dummy cameras they are just as affective and you will be less disappointed.

I happen to know Ascendent is offering a special on a 4CH DVR and 4 cameras 2 of them are IR. http://dealer.ascendentgroup.com//cctvpaâ¦

Hello I have wanted to get security cameras for awhile now and I found these

Can anyone tell me how i would hook these up to my old computer monitor do i need to hook the dvr up to a internet router or somthing? or can i just hook up the dvr and cameras to the computer screen and thats it? If i need a router are there any type of cameras that i can just hook up to a screen with the dvr and thats it?

Answer
Can anyone tell me how i would hook these up to my old computer monitor do i need to hook the dvr up to a internet router or somthing?

- If you mean hook up to a PC monitor it says it has a vga port that supports up to 1280 * 1024 resolution. The DVR is already a "Network DVR" means that you could connect it on an existing LAN in your home or office and with a proper configuration you can access the device on a desktop or laptop anywhere inside your own local area network. You'll only need the internet if you want your device to be "port forwarded" on your router meaning access your device outside your home &Office LAN through internet on another location (e.g. on a mall internet cafe).

or can i just hook up the dvr and cameras to the computer screen and thats it?
- On the near middle of the page you've posted has the graphical layout on how you could connect or setup your cctv system. hint: the red line indicates how the devices can be interconnected.

If i need a router are there any type of cameras that i can just hook up to a screen with the dvr and thats it?
- There are analog cctv cameras that you could connect its cable directly on a A/V RCA connector on the tv. When the cctv is powered up(usually 12v) it will display its video feed directly to the tv and the tv will display it. This setting will not record anything thus rather just display live feed from the cam.
-The router is only optional if you want to connect your dvr on your existing LAN without it your cctv system will just work fine.

You don't need to buy some high-tech things to make your iPhone a security camera.
Just download skype and make an email ID for skype
Add your contact to the new skype email
Video chat with the new email and hang the iPhone where you want.
Done.
This is not you wanted to hear but it still works
DIDN'T UNDERSTOOD ME?
JUST VIDEO CHAT AND PUT YOUR IPHONE WHERE YOU WANT THAN SEE AROUND THROUGH THE VIDEO.
I think nothing will get lost but your iPhone

Answer
Absolutely it exists. D-Link makes some great, easy-to-setup wireless security cameras that have motion detection and you can view the video feed from your iPhone.

Check it out:

home security camera system?

Linn MN

Hi !
I'm wanting to install a home security camera/DVR system. Good info seems hard to come by. I am temped to try the x10 wireless, (easiest looking solution), and also I do have one location that I would like to include, (outside building), that has AC power, but I can not get a wired (video) connection to . Does anyone have a recommendation between the x10 systems and the bundled systems, (First Security etc, Sams Club), type hard wired systems. Is there a good up to date reference book about this ? I have an attic and cellar, although it's difficult at my age to do much, (wiring/crawling), in the confined attic space. Does anyone have an opinion about image quality/distance transmission of the x10 system ? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. THANK-YOU in advance for your help !!

Answer
You didn't say how many cameras you want to install, however there are always issues with wireless cameras such as, lost signals, ghosting and most of all someone getting your signal and seeing what you are seeing.

A really great system is the Wilife system which records directly to your PC with the included software. Set up is simple and the cost is really low. All you need to do is the following: 1) Load the software (PC Only) 2) Plug the USB receiver into the wall and the USB cable into your computer and 3) Just plug the cameras into any electrical outlet.

The video is streamed along the ELECTRICAL lines (not wireless) directly to the USB receiver and onto your computer and the default is motion detection so the system records only when the cameras sense activity. This system gives you the ability to set up 1-6 cameras so after you purchase the "Starter Kit" which comes with one camera of your choice you only need to buy additional cameras.
You can take a look at one of the Wilife starter kit options here: http://www.clearviewsecurity.com/wilife_spy_camera_starter_kit_wispysk_c0_p38.htm

Hope this helps.
