How to prevent hooligans & terrorists from hacking into my WiFi network & internet in London?

best home security camera uk image

Major

I live in an ethnically diverse and racially sensitive suburb outside London which has a history of trouble in big and small doses. Those who remember the hooliganism of the 2011 UK riots will agree.

I also have a self defence establishment in the city of London where I teach people personal protection techniques. This place, as well as my home, have several WiFi connections that record in real time, 24 x 7. Some of these connections are tied to surveillance cameras and other security monitoring systems to detect suspicious activity including break-ins.

Recently, during an audit, I noticed several loopholes and vulnerabilities in my WiFi setup which could be bypassed, allowing access to unauthorized people. Some well-meaning neighbours and concerned community citizens too have complained of intermittent WiFi breaches, attempts at hacking by miscreants and unknown people (that's the tough part -- you never know who's going to target you, and why).

Following the horrendous Woolwich Attack and the deplorable beheading of the young British soldier in May 2013, I'm making a serious effort to ensure protection on all fronts. I can deal with the physical part, it's the technological part that I see as a weak link.

The last thing I need is some religious nut or far-right nationalist (this swings both ways) hacking into my WiFi network and using it for their senseless propaganda.

My question is: How do I beef up my WiFi connection so that it isn't hijacked by anti-socials and/or terrorists for their nefarious deeds? I want to do this the easiest and best possible way.

Answer
Install a military-grade encryption software on all your WiFi-enabled devices (laptop, PC, cell phone tablet). At the same time, do not broadcast your SSID (Service Set Identification). Do this and your wireless connection will become invisible, anonymous.

SSID is what the drive-by WiFi seekers will use to locate your wireless signal or network and sniff out for potential vulnerabilities in your setup.

Some of the vulnerabilities include weak passwords, lack of encryption on your router, etc. Once they find that, it won't take long for them to hijack it. (Trust me, these hackers latch on to your network like marauding leeches.)

Anonymity on a wireless network is the easiest, most effective way to safeguard your private space and your personal internet.

I use it all the time.

Is there a way to get this tape?

I was in a very bad car accident 4th of july. People tell me i should have died but im ok for tthe most part. Police used footage from a security camera at a gas station to help with their investigation. I have been dying to see it. How would i do that

Answer
Seek the professional advice of a Solicitor (UK), Attorney, (US) of which,
if there is a case to answer, They may be able to get you and him/her to
view the 'tape' at the investigating Police Station. No way will that tape
ever leave the sight of the Viewing Room Officer, It's not something you
can take home and watch at your' own convenience. The reason is quite
simply, because It's evidence of the Crime taking place.(Hth).

What is the best security alarm system with no monthly bill for an one bedroom apartment?

LinTaivia'

Hello, I'm moving into my first apartment and its going to be me and my fiance. Well I'm trying to look for a good security alarm system so no one can break into my house n if so, the alarm will detect. Please give me so good answers and don't be as sarcastic cuz I'm moving soon. And also, please recommend to an alarm system that you have experienced. Thank you so much and God Bless you all

Answer
Well, a dog would be the cheapest option, however if you search for a home security beside a dog, you can install such as security camera, motion sensor, and the most important is connect it to an alarm system.

Most of those security system type is provided by a home security system company such as ADT and it's requiring you to pay for monthly bill, the advantage is alarm system is connected to security provider or nearest police station while the alarm is triggered. However, you still can do install it yourself and no need to pay for monthly bill, off course the system is weaker rather than system that provided by local security company, but it can still afford your budget, you can buy the components from local security companies, generally they available in one set kits.

Just give it try to search for another information online, and if you are want to do install it yourself, look for review and manual guide from articles online would be better idea...Links below may helpful

I live in an apartment building where each apartment is individually owned. Video surveillance cameras were recently installed to monitor the halls and public spaces. The feed is available on the internet (with login) to all apartment owners. Is this legal?

Answer
I would think it is because it's not violating private space and I'm sure that the apartment owners would just like to let you see like what's going on. I would love to have something like that in my condos haha

I would like to put some security cameras around the outside of the house, because of trouble with the neighbors. I would like to view what the cameras see, later. I think I would need at least three cameras, one on the car in the street, one on the front porch area, and one on the back yard area. Or maybe two in the front.

What is the best way to do this?

About how much would it cost?

Answer
It depends what you want to do with the video.

An inexpensive consumer 4-channel surveillance DVR is about $300.
Add in a 500 gig hard drive for about $70 (records the video).
4 cameras - Average $100 each for outdoor rated, night vision, so $400... budget around $1,000 for a low-end, multi-camera, system.

The expensive part is the labor. Are you planning to install it yourself? How will the camera's wires get from the camera to the DVR? Thinking "wireless" cameras? They still need electricity - so is there power where you want to install the cameras?

Actually, "wireless" security cameras use more wires than wired ones... The camera needs power (1 wire) and transmits video wirelessly to a base station. The base station needs power and a wire to the DVR. Total = 3 "wires". A wired camera has one long "combo" cable that carries video and power.

How do you want to monitor that video? The DVR has a video-out connection that can connect to any TV with a working, available, composite (yellow RCA jack) plug. More expensive DVRs can be added to a computer network...

Frys (and Frysdotcom) has a good selection of security and surveillance stuff...

is it legal for a corporation to use security camera footage to evaluate employee preformance?

Matt

I work for a large corporation and recently they have implemented a system, where by they use security camera footage to now on a bi-daily basis to gauge our performance. I never consented to have this footage be used to gauge my performance at work, I was wondering if this is at all legal, because in my opinion, it doesn't seem like this is a legitimate business pratice. Any help would be appreciated.

Answer
what makes you think your consent is needed?
what makes you think your opinion of what is a legitimate business practice carries any weight?

you obviously have a high opinion of yourself and your importance to this employer, I hope you are correct because if you are wrong and continue with this attitude you will find yourself unemployed rather quickly....

if you do your job the way you are expected to all this footage will do is verify the fact that you are a good employee, if they see anything other than that; it is YOUR fault....

The remotely viewable security camera system at my business requires that I enter the ip address for access. Since I installed a wireless router to my modem, the ip address won't let me view video surveillance. Going to "What is my ip address" gives me information that is not relavent to the DVR.

Answer
You can try clicking start then run which would be the bottom right of the start menu and then type cmd in the command prompt type: ipconfig/all and that would display your ip address which is usually the first one that comes up. I hope that helps, if not the IT suggestion would work to. To find out the external ip address which is usually assigned by the ISP you can trying typing the "nslookup" command in the command prompt as the one above. I think that command gives the external IP.

How bad can addiction to surveillance security camera monitoring become?

AussieBum

We installed a security camera at our business for about a year, I feel like I constantly have to be checking it and it replaced my normal viewing of television and radio. If the system goes down, I get anxious and scared that I don't see what is happening. I can't read or do any other work as long as I hear at least the white noise from the security camera then i am ok. I could be enjoying myself by listening to music, but no I have to hear every word they are saying. It's taken over my life and I can't turn it off. Anyone else has this experience?

Answer
I once heard of drug dealers using these on their houses because they wanted to know if the cops where there or not... this could be a classic case of paranoia... now that its past routine and a habit... it becomes life to you... you must break the habit quickly...

have you ever had any problems since these sec cams were installed? maybe hire someone else to do it for you... if at all possible i would offer my services over secured internet remote access till you can handle it again... 6 to 12 mths of doing something becomes a habit and part of life at 12 mths...

the key is to NOT have access to the cameras at your location. you will need a detailed report as to who is doing what and when. the military uses this for every minute of every day as a log. you can have digitalized documented reports daily.

i have details on my experience with this type of clearance with security for your business'.

What is a good home security camera system?

Cline

I am looking for an home security camera sytem that I could link with my tv on it's own channel.

Any suggestions?

Answer
You can do this a couple of different ways:

Method 1) Wireless cameras, transmitting to a Receiver. From the receiver run the signal into a modulator, which will output the video as an actual TV channel. You'd need to add the signal onto your video network using a splitter/combiner.

Method 2) Wireless cameras and receiver, and connect the output from the receiver to an unused video input on your TV. View the cameras by selecting the correct input using your TV remote. This is cheaper and simpler than Method 1.

Keep in mind that the first method using modulation can have problems. The quality of the pictures may be poor, due to interference from nearby channels on your TV network.

The second method is almost foolproof, since you're using the "raw" signal straight out of the receiver.

Good luck!

I want to have an always-on motion activated security camera that supports wifi or even wired ethernet that can upload to a web server or ftp. I don't want to leave my computer on all the time.

Answer
Yes. They are called IP or Network cameras.

http://video-insight.com/Purchase/Security-Cameras/IP-Cameras.aspx

Here are a few. I actually work for this company. Funny I ran across your post while answering miscellaneous questions. If you ordered from us, your camera would likely pass through my hands.

Another guy mentioned Netbotz. They are proprietary. If you want temperature readings from them, you need to buy their whole system. If you're going to do that, they are not the best. Pelco dominates the high end of this market, but they cost a fortune. If you want what you asked for which is just a camera by itself with a lot of uploading options and motion detection, I suggest a network camera by Toshiba, Canon, Axis, or Vivotek. If you want insane resolution as well, look at IQ Eye (but costly).

How does live monitoring from security camera's work?

Metal

We need a security camera for our home. When away, how does live monerting work through your iPhone or Android ? We live our little dog alone all day and would like to be able to check on him by this security camera too. Do you have to have a internet hookup, or phone hook up, how does it work to be able to broadcast that video to your iPhone or Droid?

Answer
Hi "Metal":

The most important thing to have, when setting up an internet-based camera (called an IP camera), is to have a good broadband (non-dialup, always on) internet connection at your house. It doesn't have to be high-speed cable modem (from your cable company) or fiber-optic (like Verizon FiOS or ATT U-verse), but at least a DSL-line from your phone company.

The IP cameras (or even a webcam connected to one of your computers) need to be connected to a home "network" or LAN (Local Area Network) via either WiFi --for wireless cams-- or using regular Ethernet (Cat5 or Cat6) cables to an internet router. If you just plan on having one camera connected to your PC, then you could use the computer as the "router", but routers are cheap ($20-$40 if you shop wisely) and simple to set up.

Your iPhone or Android device would simply use a web browser to log onto your home network, using an IP address & password, and you would watch your camera just like watching a YouTube feed, except that it would be "live".

Here's a YouTube demo of this using an iPhone, by a good security camera company: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PnP_Dbqn1Cw&feature=related

There are plenty of other YouTube demos and tutorials, if you search around. I added a link to Swann cameras' website tutorials (they're the largest seller of DIY security systems) in my Sources below, as another good information resource.

hope this helps,

So I have this ordinary security camera that connects via BNC (antenna / coaxial cable) to a TV and the TV just tunes to the camera frequency like it would to a regular channel - I tuned the camera on channel 0 for quick access. Sounds simple so far, I have good image quality from the camera, but then I ran into a big problem : I also need to watch my regular TV channels on that TV while the camera is connected, so this is my question : how do I connect both the camera input and the satellite dish to the TV at once ? I know you'll right away suggest a switch box, but that's not what I'm looking for, because that means getting up and manually switching the box every time I want to alternate between the camera and the satellite. Something like a signal merger, or anything that would take 2 sources and output them into one, so I could tune in both the camera and the channels with the ease of my remote, without having to flick a switch. Does such thing even exist at a reasonable price ? In shorts : 2 signal sources, same TV, can it be done ?

I am looking for a system of 3 cameras, that can record directly onto the internet. I would like to have something that is good in the dark and also has a good resolution.

Does anyone have any suggestions, because I have no idea where to start. Thanks so much!

Answer
Hello

CNB cameras are not high end and are made in china,

Spyville just sell products made in china and are also quite low quality.

Most IR cameras do not give good images in the dark specially cameras under $200. Many companies claim good night vision but there are only a handful of brands who give night vision over 30 feet out doors. normally if a cameras is rated 150 feet of IR it will give you ok images at 30 feet at night and good images at about 20 if rated for 60 feet you might get 15 indoors and will be useless outdoors.

Economical DVR's
Two good economical DVRs I would recommend are Ascendent's AVP-4120 DVR or Pelco's DX-400. The AVP-4120 uses the latest H.264 codec to improve streaming and recording time, and will allow PCs and smart phones to remotely view and control your cameras. These are the DVRs I would recommend that are good quality and affordable from companies who stand behind there products.

Always buy DVR and security equipment from a good brand name manufacturer like Pleco, Bosch, Honeywell and Ascendent: http://www.ascendentgroup.com

Unfortunately many people buy very low end systems which have poor frame rate and bad image quality because they buy from Amazon, "spy stores" Lorex, Q-see, NCIX, new-egg, and other online retailers who sell cheap products for china there were never intended to be anything more then a nany cam and should never be used to provide security.

Not all DVRs are created equal, in fact there are many options that offer varying performance much like the automobile industry. In the world of DVRs you can find the equivalent of a $10,000 Kia and a $350,000 Ferrari and everything in between. Both have 4 wheels and windshield but that where the similarities end, itâs under the hood that counts. Just like any other consumer electronic in the end you get what you pay for.

The smaller the files size the more images are able to be sent, and the faster they can be processed improving both FPS and speed. File size is the heart of any DVR and goes far beyond just its streaming capabilities, as it also determines the recording storage time, how much you can back up at once, how fast it renders and searches video. The file size of a DVR impacts the performance of the DVR in just about every aspect from speed to longevity and is often the most important spec of any DVR.

If you are buying a DVR and streaming is a high priority I suggest you ask for a demo and connect to the DVR to make sure it is able to stream fast enough for your needs. Most DVRs say they have remote viewing but it is often too slow and laggy to be of any use especially if it is a standalone.

Just like any other consumer electronic in the end you get what you pay for. Most retailers and sellers make about a 40-80% profit margin, this is after costs like shipping and overhead. That means when you buy a product that costs $100.00 the manufacturer usually has only spent $30 to build it which simply means itâs not a good product and will probably have a working life of about 2 months. Cheap products are like disposable razors they are NOT designed to last for a long time and you will end up replacing them every 2 months.

DVRs need to be good quality as they run 24/7 (20X more than the average electronic device) and process anywhere from 30-480 frames per second which in a year is over 15 billion images, and a good DVR should last 3-5 years.

Again if you are going to buy no name products save money and get dummy cameras they are just as affective and you will be less disappointed.

Hope this Helps,
williammorales93@ymail.com

What's the best way to set up a home exterior security camera system?

bobseditsu

I want to put up a camera (with night vision) on the front of my house, pointed at the road to record nighttime activities.

I want to record the video onto my computer.

I have several questions:

1. What's an effective and cheap way to do this?

2. What kind of camera should I look for? I'm thinking possibly using a standard Logitech webcam. Good idea?

3. What software do I use to receive the video & record it?

Thanks in advance.

Answer
Effective... get a decent quality video camera. Cheap, try using a webcam (quality of picture leaves much to be desired).

Best suggestion is to talk to a local electronics store. They will know how to set it up and best hardware to use.

Logitech webcam no good at handling moving pictures. Frame rates way too slow.

You might also want to look for issues of Canadian Security Magazine. Always good suggestions in there for home & business security at semi-affordable prices.

When you get the cam, it will supply you with a very basic vid record software. Try going to google ask looking up video recording software...

I am looking into setting up a system for a small business. Withstand MN winter outside. The camera, recorder and TV. Details and how to and where to look would be nice.

Answer
All you need is a camera that is environmentally shielded. If you live in a cold climate then make sure it has a heater in the housing. CAT-5 cable and monitor are all you will need from there. If you want to record you will need a DVR or VCR. If you have multiple cameras than a multiplexer is also needed. All these things can be purchased thru your local security company. Find a company that does business with a nationwide security monitoring service..like ADP, Monitronics, Brinks, etc.

How much does a typical small business or business security system worth?

AG

I need help related to a project I am working on(creating my own business) and I'd like to know if anyone knows roughly how much a security system for a small business is worth?

Answer
A basic system (all doors, a few motions, maybe a couple heats or smokes) would cost anywhere from $700-$1000. And about $40-$80 a month in Monitoring costs.

It really depends what you want on the system... things that would make the installation cost more: additional keypads, additional smoke or heat detectors, glassbreak detectors, a camera/surveillance system, etc. And too it depends which company does it. I know the company I work for installs for less then ADT. We also charge less for monitoring of the system.

Hope this helps! Feel free to e-mail me from my profile page if you have any questions.

What you want is called a "video scaler" and they are not cheap. What they do is upconvert video to VGA:

It may end up being cheaper to buy a video monitor. Small flat screens with video input are getting much cheaper:

Is there such thing as a video security system I can buy and install myself that transmits to my PC at home?

BlairLuvr

Can this be done WITHOUT paying a subscription to a security company? The purpose of the video security system is to keep an eye out on the business after hours. Any info, links or suggestions will be appreciated.Thanks.

Answer
Hello

You do not need to subscribe to any service as long as you have internet and know the user name and password of your DVR you should be able to connect to from anywhere.

I suggest you buy a PC based DVR has they have more processing power and normally have a much smaller file size and offer more features then Standalone DVR's. I know many people buy a cheap standalone DVR, only to upgrade to a PC based in 6 months especially when they are using it to manage a store remotely. Also PC based allows you to record up to 64 cameras where a standalone will have a limit of 16.

File size is crucial to streaming because most DVRâs on the market record at real time performance (30FPS per channel) so on a 4CH is trying to send 120, 8CH 240, and a 16CH 480 images per second which requires way too much bandwidth even for the most extreme internet connections.

Some good DVR brands that I recommend are Bosch, Pelco, Honeywell and Ascendent. These brands are what security professionals use, Q-see, Swan and Lorex are only used in residential applications because they are sold by Tiger Direct, Newegg, Sams Club, Costco and other retail outlets but are not used by any security professionals also their tech support rarely speaks English as their first language...

These brand manufacturers also have a complete line of CCTV cameras for any application from residential to military.

I have done projects that required cameras to stream over satellite and cellular networks and the only DVR that could provide the video streaming was Ascendent Technology Groupâs X3 DVR. To give you an example of what a good DVR should stream like, below are instructions on how to connect to Ascendent's X3 DVR using Internet Explorer.

This makes a great demo as it is up 24/7 and camera 1 is a PTZ camera which allows you to Pan Tilt and Zoom in real-time over the internet using the controls located to the right.

Instructions on how to connect to Ascendentâs DVR with Internet Explorer:

2) Install active X control
3) Hit âConnect)
4) DVR type PC
5) DVR code SITE-100

10) And hit connect

Again I recommend going with a PC based DVR but if you don't want to spend the money I suggest Ascendent's AVP-4120 DVR or Pelco's DX-4000 as they will allow you to view all your cameras instantly from anywhere in the world using either IE. The AVP-4120 will also allow MAC platforms as well as PC to remotely view cameras and it uses the new H.264 codec but no standalone will offer the video streaming or performance a good PC based DVR will.

Hope this helps

What is a good home security camera system?

Gary

I am looking for an home security camera sytem that I could link with my tv on it's own channel.

Any suggestions?
Trying to stay below $400, I could do any wiring myself. I live in South Florida so it gets to be around 90 degrees on average. Just a standard resolution in color. Night vision would be a big plus but not needed. If it could be directed to the video input on a receiver that could work also. Would want it to store recordings.

Answer
Analog, composite video? There are lots.

On its own channel? Some RF modulators can be expensive, especially if you want to select the channel. Easier if you just use one of the other video inputs that are not in use.

What is your budget?
What resolution are you looking for?
Will the video need to be recorded and stored? If yes, what surveillance DVR are you looking at?
Only one camera?
Is night vision required? If yes, how far does the camera need to see in darkness?
Does the camera need to be outdoor rated?
Does it snow where you live? If yes, you may need a housing with a heater unit.
Does it get REALLY hot where you live? If yes, you might need a housing with a cooling system.
Is the video signal to be wired or wireless?
Is there power available where you plan to install the camera?
Is the camera going to stay in one position or is pan/tilt/zoom control required?

You have not provided enough information for anyone to provide you a good recommendation.

How do I hook up an IP wireless security camera via a mobile broadband hotspot device?

I want to add security video cameras to an area that does not have an internet cable connection. There are wireless IP-based cameras that let you view them remotely. The devices broadcast to a wireless router so you can view the camera over a browser. The problem with a broadband hotspot is that it would be broadcasting the camera 24x7. That'd output too much data to the hotspot. I need a way to hookup a remote camera to a broadband hotspot that doesn't use data until I actually go to the page to look at what the camera's seeing.
These are very interesting answers. In the hopes of sparking a successful solution I will address the points brought up so far.

Kevy I don't understand the stream vs. non-stream answer. I think you're saying that the IP cameras send a signal 24x7 regardless of whether I connect to that signal.

For the SAN server, I think that's a DVR in the video surveillance parlance. The good thing about a DVR is that we can see what happened in the past. The bad thing about a DVR is that we can't view it remotely.

Remote real time viewing would be best because the motion detector has triggered the police twice in two weeks. No one was obviously in the house either time. It would have been great to remotely view the camera to see what triggered the motion detector. A DVR solution is the next best thing. We would still have to send the police when the motion alarm is activated. But at least we can get a video of what triggered the alarm. The value of real time remote viewing is th

Answer
Its a real time streaming software that does it and only streams which you connect to the HTTP server of your System...

It wont stream (use bits/data) unless you connect to it... you know until you go to the page to view it.

You can have it record to a SAN server... so you have all the data saved... and real time it when you connect...

It will only use data when you connect to it.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Yes while its on its streaming/viewing locally and these bits are the one used by the speed of your router... when you connect to it through the internet (remote connection) your using internet data the speed what your ISP give you.

Basically you only use internet data if you connect to it remotely.

To use the internet... bits from end must travel to bits on the other end... if not internet is not being used... So yes ip cameras are activated connected to a server, but until you remotely connect to it no internet data is used. If you was in your home viewing them... still no internet data is used if your use the Private IP of the cameras... if you use the Public IP of the camera (your WAN IP) data will be used even from your local home.

Like a webpage from a server... its up and running 24/7... no data will transfer unless some goes to their computer and types www.mywebsite.com and connects to my server for my web page...

If i was in the location of my webserver and connect using the private ip of 192.168.1.16 the page still loads and works as if im connecting remotely but no internet data will be used... but since your not locally at your location and in a remote location you must use the internet to view my website... and because of port forward and DNS... DNS says www.mywebserver.com is at the Public IP address of 209.28.93.12... when you connect to it port forwarding says port 80 is located on the 192.168.1.16 and connects you...

That's how remote (internet) connections works.

What ur calculation & manipulation tell u about 2012.
I m not talking only about the bad things or disaster it could be good , funny ,strange etc.
Eg.
â¢Like sex tape & MMS are become trends for every college student
â¢All space satellite stop working
â¢All electronic instrument which use IC become dead
â¢Anti-UV ray cloth are use (anti- UV ray Underwear) etc.

Answer
2012 will be remarkably similar to 2011 and 2013 and not much different from 2010.

EDIT Apple will bring out yet another phone / PA / whatever with dozens of applications that few people need. Toyota and other car companies will announce models with even more distracting gizmos in them. More people will get hopelessly lost following their in car navigation systems. Some juvenile girl group will become "popular" warblers, that is, heavily promoted.
Justin Bieber will try to make a comeback. Lady Gaga will begin to fade from view.

Surveillance cameras whether attached to traffic lights or elsewhere will get even more intrusive.

The security checks at airports will get even more annoying and some people will refuse to fly. This may lead to more airlines going broke.

On Y!A there will be more idiot questions about the Illuminati and in December that year the Y!A servers will suicide over the amount of stupidity they are forced to handle.

Who were the ten most important people in American history since 1865?

D

I need help thinking of the ten most important people to have lived in the US since 1865 for a paper im writing for my history class. it can be people or kinds of people. people would be like teddy roosevelt and kinds of people would be like workers, farmers or soldiers. if possible please give some reasoning behind choices. thank you!

Answer
John D Rockerfeller---oil industry and figured out what to do with a by-product of refining oil (gasoline)

JP Morgan---banking/finance--you've heard of US Gov't bailout of companies? Morgan was so rich he bailed out the US Gov't at least once and perhaps twice-----how rich was he? In 2012 dollars his personal fortune was more than Bill Gates, Warren Buffet, the Walton family (Wal-Mart) and Donald Trump combined. He was in the 10s of billions of 2012 money.

Thomas Edison---his inventions (light bulb, phonograph, movie cameras...)

Teddy Roosevelt---pushed through first anti-trust laws & creation of Panama Canal

Franklin Roosevelt---New Deal (created Unemployment Ins, Social Security, Securities and Exchange Comm, and the CCC which, among other things, built roads and dams and TVA), WW2 (Lend Lease, peacetime draft which helped us be prepared for our entrance in the war), also came up with the United Nations

Henry Ford---created assembly line that other industries copied which made things cheaper and faster to produce which in turn made those products cheaper to buy

Andrew Carnegie---steel---sturdier bridges and skyscrapers were built due to his innovations in refining steel

Harry Truman---ordered A-Bombs dropped on Japan in WW2 starting Atomic age also desegregated US Armed Forces

Dwight D Eisenhower----Supreme Commander on D-Day also pushed through the creation of the Interstate road system that we have today.

William McKinley----annexed Hawaii, declared war on Spain which got us Guam, Puerto Rico, Philippines, and a Naval Base in Cuba called Guantanamo Bay as well as a permanent presence as a big-time player on the World Stage

These 10 may or may not have have nice guys or anybody's heroes but they were important to the way the US was shaped from 1865-1960s

Did you mac users think the product was worth the money?

Jesse

I'm debating whether or not to buy a Macbook or a new Dell PC, and i'm leaning towards Mac. The only thing stopping me though is the high price. I'm only in 9th grade, so I don't exactly have a fountain of money in my bedroom. I'm wondering if a Mac is worth saving my money for long enough to buy it or if I should get the cheaper Dell PC. Also, if anyone's had both a Mac and a PC, if you could tell me which one you liked the most, that would be awesome.

Thanks.

Answer
Avoid the Mac, I would get the Dell for the price (or Asus or htttp://www.powernotebooks.com for top quality)

PC=Variety of specs, options, quality, prices, vendors, support
Mac=One vendor, limited options, still more expensive. Look below for more information..

Today, Macs use a subset of PC hardware. Why spend extra to get the same CPU chips, graphics cards and OS X isn't as secure as you think..

Don't believe the lies that Macs are better than PCs at graphics/animation.. Dreamworks Animation http://www.dreamworksanimation.com/ under studio click on Technology of Animation, an independent film maker I know uses PCs, a graphic artist I used to know uses PCs also.

A number of PCs can also run OS X (Mac OS) http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=os+x+on+pc&btnG=Google+Search&aq=0&oq=os+x+on+ as well just that Apple makes it illegal in order to get Market share.. The reason why Mac can run native Windows is because it is using a subset of PC hardware,

If you decide to buy a Mac for running Windows, you will still have to get the same virus/spyware protection, and run into the same issues as a regular PC.

Now is a Mac worth buying for OS X?

I say: NO... for the following reasons...

ADVANTAGES WINDOWS :
Aprox 90% of the market is Windows and most PCs have windows already pre-installed.
1) Some websites require Internet Explorer, to run IE on Mac you really get ies4osx which is the Windows version of IE running really buggy and illegal if you don't have a legitimate copy of Windows.
2) Supports more devices (printers and other things you hook into the computer).
3) More business software/games
4) Want the dock on OS X (Mac)? google/yahoo rocketdock, objectdoc.
5) Used by businesses.

ADVANTAGES LINUX :
1) FREE (most versions are)
2) Install software by either 1) Synaptic Package Manager, 2) Add/Remove 3) Opening a .deb or .rpm file (depending on distribution)
2) Like the Mac OS X effects? go yahoo/google COMPIZ FUSION which can do any cool effect a Mac can do and many ore....
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E4Fbk52Mk1w
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N3gkX9HDfEE (there is no flickering when you use it like on the video, not sure why the person has the flicker)
3) Mac OS X Doc? google/yahoo Avant Window Navigator.Cairo Dock, http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x3rf5q_cairo-dock-mac-os-x-leopard-dock-on_tech
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p0hzi22g2DE
4) It is FASTER/MORE SECURE to surf on the internet
5) Some Windows programs work with Wnehq/Crossover (also avail on Mac, but why pay $$$)

SECURITY
Mac OS X was hacked in 2006 less than 30 minutes, and within 2 minutes in a contest in 2008, and within 10 seconds in 2009. In 2008, Linux and Vista were not hacked until another day when restrictions were lowered. Vista was next, and then Linux. In 2009 Windows 7 fell shortly after the Mac but Linux was unscathed.
Macs are standardized with Cameras, if your Mac gets hacked, the hacker can turn on your camera with more ease.
Please Note: All OS's have vulnerabilities.

VIRUSES
Mac OS X has viruses (and significantly on the rise), a friend of mine has a virused Mac. As more users use Macs, more viruses will come out for it. Especially when users think "they are safe".

QUALITY/PROBLEMS
Contrary to belief, Macs are not better quality. Apple also has been changing suppliers to try to "lower the price" and thus lowering quality. Even with the lower prices, Macs still cost more, they spend a higher percent of budget trying to make it look pretty, and marketing.

Sample of problems: Deleting your Data (Snow Leopard), Overheating Macbooks, OS X- not responding to keyboard, some units with 16bit screens, etc. Apple statistics are misleading since Mac users with problem machines are more likely to go out and buy a new computer than PC users. Apple is lowering prices which means you can expect lower quality than in the past. Apple had switched the manufacturers producing parts. OS X also has problems slowing down.

Repairs are more expensive than PCs since the IMac, Mac Mini are compact units, and Apple charges a premium for their services. Some repairs can be done by another repair service but the compact design of the computer causes problems.
With an IMac, if the problem is with the monitor, the whole computer would have to be brought in.
IMac and Mac mini lack expansion.

PRICE
A similar equipped PC is much cheaper to purchase than Mac. Lets use Dell (but you can compare with another PC Brand if you like)

**(DESKTOP)

PLEASE NOTE: I compare Apple Mac's vs Dells best deal. If you really want an all-in one the Dell all-in-one has more ram, wireless keyboard and mouse and equivalent to $400 for free making the Imac still more expensive when you matching specs. Personally I don't think the All-in-Ones are a good choice, and consider them overpriced, lack expandability and repairs both more expensive and require the entire computer.

PS: Apple knows that they need to make Macintosh look different than PC so all Macs except the Mac Pro will not have a tower option. Apple's low end lacks expandability but it makes the Mac "look different", if Mac had a tower for low-end, more people would realize the similarities between the two.

Dell: ($700)
CPU: 2.33 GHZ Dell Inspiron QUAD (4 Processor) CORE
SCREEN: 20inch Screen
MEMORY: 4GB Ram
HARD DRIVE: 500 GB hard Drive
OPTICAL DRIVE: 16x DVD/CD Read/Writer

http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?oc=dddwra4&c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&kc=desktop-inspiron-537s

The Mac Mini since it has no monitor, keyboard, mouse, very skimpy on options and setup and is not the best deal... The IMac is better price than the Mac Mini.

IMac ($1300)
CPU: 2.4 GHZ DUAL (2 Processor) CORE (SLOWER CPU)
SCREEN: 20inch Screen
MEMORY: (upgrade to) 4GB Ram (SAME)
HARD DRIVE: (upgrade to ) 320 GB hard Drive (LESS HARD DRIVE)
