What is the cheapest system to record the video from a security camera i just bought. I bought it on ebay its a 30 led color security camera with audio and i can connect it to the tv but i need something so it can record the video and also something cheap im new to this because someone threw rocks at my window randomly and we thought it was gunshots. I tried a vcr but it dosent record for that long

You can use your vcr if you set it for EP (extended play mode). That way, it will, with a T-120 tape, record up to 6 hours in it's most basic mode. If you can find a T-160 tape, it will record 8 hours worth.

You could program your computer to record to it's harddrive, but I'll leave that answer to others more familiar with the setup and technique.

You cant view cameras unless you are give permission CCTV Closed Circuit TV (note the closed circuit)

95% of cameras and DVR will not allow you to view them with the I phone or other smart phones.
And even then you need permission and password.

How to control a web camera with a pic and save pictures on memory?

Q. Hi, I just want to know if somebody know how to control a web camera with a pic, saving the pictures on an external memory, if somebody has an idea of how to do it, would be wonderful. I promise to publish all layout and information to get this project done. The idea is to design this system focused on car security, I want that once the silence alarm is active, the camera starts to take pictures from inside and outside the car, and of course, the idea is make it easy (publishing code) for that everyone can do it.

A PIC sounds underpowered for this. You might be better off with a small 80x86 or ARM board running Linux.

Be sure to choose a webcam with proper Linux support. This is especially important if using an ARM processor. Some manufacturers provide only a binary blob driver for 80x86, but you will need the Source Code to recompile for ARM.

Apple is lowering prices which means you can expect lower quality than in the past. Apple had switched the manufacturers producing parts. OS X also has problems slowing down.

If you really want an all-in one the Dell all-in-one has more ram, wireless keyboard and mouse and equivalent to $400 for free making the Imac still more expensive when you matching specs. The 2011 Charger is totally redone for 11 and should be the best ever? While Dodge in general is not known for reliability and resale value. their build quality has improved.
To compare the 2006 wi.th the 2011, there is no comparison. Look at the october or november car & driver mag. They did a cover story on the 2011 charger and it was excellent.
You will need to look at the V6 instead of the HEMI because a 16 year old with a high power, brand new car will be VERY expensive to insure. The V6 alone will still be "jaw dropping" as it is.

just go with the asus.. but gettting an ROG will do you way better. ROG is the gaming series. even if you dont game all that means is that you get supreme performance because thats what a gaming computer is.

IP = "Internet protocol". These CCTV cameras have a chip in them that basically turns them into a "video server" with an IP address like any other node on an IP based computer network (like the LAN at your home or office that connects to the Internet). IP based cameras can be password protected and can be accessed from other computers on the same local area network that the computer connects to and can be accessed remotely over the internet if the LAN allows remote connection. You can see what the IP camera sees using a browser. The IP camera can send video or stills to a file server on the network for storage and later viewing if needed.

Analog CCTV security cameras can connect directly to a TV (the Yellow RCA jack monitor port used by game consoles) or they can connect to a multi-channel DVR (they come in 4, 8, 9, 16 or larger channel sizes) and the DVR can connect to a monitor. Most newer security DVRs can also be assigned an IP address so seeing what those analog cameras can see using a computer and a browser. The DVR has a hard drive and is the "server" for storing the captured video.

Certain IP cameras have additional functions that can be controlled by the browser software (using Java) that allows for panning, tilting and zooming. Certain analog cameras allow for panning, zooing and tilting, too, but use a wired or wireless controller - this may be direct connection to the PTZ unit the camera is mounted to or through the DVR.

So basically, there is not a lot of difference between the two - just the communication protocol and method. One is digital and the other is analog (but stores the digital information on the DVR). Just because the IP camera is digital does not make it "better" - it depends what your surveillance requirements are - both camera types will meet your needs - it depends what your budget can stand.

95% of cameras and DVR will not allow you to view them with the I phone or other smart phones.
And even then you need permission and password.

Is it true that Mac Books do not get infected with viruses?

I have never used Mac but I've heard many times that one big advantage of Macs over Windows PCs is that Macs do not get infected with viruses so I don't have to buy anti-virus software like I do with my PC. Is that true? Why is it that Macs are immune to computer viruses?

Not much you can do about it, but you better make sure you know what you saw before you go and accuse people of anything.

The placement of the camera (if that is what you saw) would probably be legal, just like a security camera. The fact that it points towards your house or backyard doesn't matter. Unless you have a 9 foot privacy fence, and the camera is placed solely to record you over that fence.

Anyone with the proper security clearance and a standard browser can monitor video, and control and configure the cameras on the network.

You need to have a fairly robust wired or wireless network set up for a successful IP surveillance roll-out. This Recipe assumes that you have a typical 10/100 wired or 802.11g wireless network already set up. We will, however, look at some Power over Ethernet (PoE) networking equipment and discuss the advantages of that type of system as well. It sounds like you have fairly specific needs. If you are looking for licence plate recognition, night vision and zoom features it is not going to be cheap and you should probably stay away from wireless solutions - particularly inexpensive ones.
As for connection to a central computer, this is typically done with a DVR (Digital video recorder) Through IP. Although there are some IP specific camera's out there. Be careful on the equipment you choose as there is some pretty crappy offshore equipment out there. What looks good on a monitor locally may not look so good once the image is compressed and sent over the internet or LAN.

When you look at a system it is best to look at it as a whole. There is a term we use in the industry - crap in crap out. You may have the best the best camera but it doesn't matter one biut if your recorder is crap. Same goes for the recorder, if you have a great recorder and really bad spystore camera's you might as well be looking at a black and white TV in the middle of the bush with no cable.

Nobody was watching but I was to afraid of the cameras zooming in on me, I tried to not look suspicious. How would I view all my security cameras at once?

I have 8 security cameras running through an IP system, all the apps I can find for my iPad and iPhone only support 4 cameras viewing at once, it would be preferable to see them all at once so you can see everything infront of your eyes. Does anyone know a solution to veiw them all at once on my iPad or iPhone. (need an answer quick!)

Hello, Many users have problems with web cams. Press the designated button to turn on your camera. If you are using an external camera, use a compatible USB cable to connect the camera to the USB port of your computer.

Next try this.
Click the "Allow" button from the flash player settings window. You should now see live video footage from your web camera. If you don't see live video, your web camera is not working properly.
To reinstall the drivers try this. Right click on My Computer-> Properties -> Device manager -> Imaging Devices -? Webcam. Right click on the webcam and uninstall it. This will cause the computer to reinstall the drivers and software. Restart the computer and hopefully your problem will be fixed.

Today, Macs use a subset of PC hardware. Why spend extra to get the same CPU chips, graphics cards and OS X isn't as secure as you think..

If you decide to buy a Mac for running Windows, you will still have to get the same virus/spyware protection, and run into the same issues as a regular PC.


Now is a Mac worth buying for OS X?

I say: NO... for the following reasons...

QUALITY/PROBLEMS
Contrary to belief, Macs are not better quality. Apple also has been changing suppliers to try to "lower the price" and thus lowering quality. Even with the lower prices, Macs still cost more, they spend a higher percent of budget trying to make it look pretty, and marketing.

Sample of problems: Overheating Macbooks, OS X- not responding to keyboard, some units with 16bit screens, etc. Apple statistics are misleading since Mac users with problem machines are more likely to go out and buy a new computer than PC users. Apple is lowering prices which means you can expect lower quality than in the past. Apple had switched the manufacturers producing parts. OS X also has problems slowing down.

Repairs are more expensive than PCs since the IMac, Mac Mini are compact units, and Apple charges a premium for their services. Some repairs can be done by another repair service but the compact design of the computer causes problems.
With an IMac, if the problem is with the monitor, the whole computer would have to be brought in.
IMac and Mac mini lack expansion.

VIRUSES
Mac OS X has viruses (and significantly on the rise), a friend of mine has a virused Mac. As more users use Macs, more viruses will come out for it. Especially when users think "they are safe".

Mac OS X was hacked in 2006 less than 30 minutes, and within 2 minutes in a contest in 2008, and within 10 seconds in 2009. In 2008, Linux and Vista were not hacked until another day when restrictions were lowered. Vista was next, and then Linux. In 2009 Windows 7 fell shortly after the Mac but Linux was unscathed.
Macs are standardized with Cameras, if your Mac gets hacked, the hacker can turn on your camera with more ease.

PLEASE NOTE: I compare Apple Mac's vs Dells best deal. If you really want an all-in one the Dell all-in-one has more ram, wireless keyboard and mouse and equivalent to $400 for free making the Imac still more expensive when you matching specs. Personally I don't think the All-in-Ones are a good choice, and consider them overpriced, lack expandability and repairs both more expensive and require the entire computer.

PS: Apple knows that they need to make Macintosh look different than PC so all Macs except the Mac Pro will not have a tower option. Apple's low end lacks expandability but it makes the Mac "look different", if Mac had a tower for low-end, more people would realize the similarities between the two.

I need to allow certain programs to access our modem / internet connection (security cameras and credit card processing software), but I don't want my employees surfing the web. Does anyone know how to put a password on the browser so that they can't bring up the window?

What operating system are you using? If you are running Windows XP, 2000 or 2003, you can apply Group Policy which restricts the use of Internet Explorer. If you can provide more details on your operating system, I'll be in a better position to advice.

Just decide where you want to position the camera and drill holes to mount the bracket.
Drill a hole through the wall for the camera wire.
Attach the mounting bracket.
Attach wires to the camera.
Feed the security camera wire through the wall.
Attach the camera to the mounting bracket.
Position the camera so that it faces the proper area.
Attach the security camera wire to the monitor or receiver inside your home.
Test your home security camera to make sure it is working properly.

Is it worth it? Anyone like it/dislike it? Please give me your opinions. I think it is really neat that you can see the baby and everything, but is it too good to be true?

I disagree with the above answer. We actually have a video monitor for our 6 month old son, and it's great! With regualr monitors, all you hear is the sound. You cant always tel whats going on just by the sound you hear. With the video monitor, you can hear the sound, and see what is going on as well. Sometimes, with just a regualr monitor, you will hear somthing strange, and run in to check it out, and it really be nothing. We had many false alarms becasue sound alone doesnt answer concerns.

The video on the monitor is actually pretty clear. On some, you can actually record on it too, incase you want to use it as a security camera!

On its own channel? Some RF modulators can be expensive, especially if you want to select the channel. Easier if you just use one of the other video inputs that are not in use.

What resolution are you looking for?

Only one camera?
Is night vision required? If yes, how far does the camera need to see in darkness?
Does the camera need to be outdoor rated?
Does it snow where you live? If yes, you may need a housing with a heater unit.
Does it get REALLY hot where you live? If yes, you might need a housing with a cooling system.
Is the video signal to be wired or wireless?
Is there power available where you plan to install the camera?
Is the camera going to stay in one position or is pan/tilt/zoom control required?
