Home security camera surveillance-how much does a basic set up cost?

Lost of crime in my neighbor and interested in home camera surveillance. Is it expensive and is it worth it?

Answer
You can purchase a variety of different systems, ranging from a few hundred dollars to a few thousand. You probably don't need the most expensive systems (unless your house is huge). A good option would be to place external security cameras in areas that a thief would most likely pass through before he entered your home. You can then attach the security cameras to a DVR so that they only record when there is activity.

However, I think its important to point out that while security cameras are great, they are only one (optional) component of home security. Your first goal should be a home security system. You can purchase these online and install them yourself. They are the same models as you would receive from ADT or Brinks, but at a fraction of the cost, since you do the actual installation (which is not that difficult). The site below is a good resource for home security systems and camera systems. Good luck.

How much to install 16 camera security system?

Connor

I was just wondering about how much ONLY an installation would cost for 8 outdoor cameras? This includes wiring and mounting and all that. Thanks!
I'm saying like if we had a professional come and install it, we all ready bought the system.

Answer
Well over a grand unless you install it yourself. About 700 bucks if you do a little comparative shopping and install it yourself.

how to get a security camera to record all the time?

J

Hello, we have been having issues with someone stealing solar lights out of our front yard. We have bought cameras, and have ran it through a vcr but we have to push record and it don't record 24/7. Now tonight someone came again in spite of a sign that says they are on camera, and we wired the solar lights into the ground, someone came and snapped off 2 of them and of course the camera wasn't on because it don't record 24/7. What is the cheapest way to be able to record all of the time?? Thanks

Answer
Wow, I'm sorry to hear about this issue, must be very frustrating. Hope I can help a bit.

I'm surprised that you're using a VCR to record security footage. I am not even sure where to buy a new VCR.

New security systems of any value record to a DVR or to a hard drive. DVR can be set to record a 24 hour loop. A full week loop may be pushing it for most systems. But surely within 24 hours of the event you can see that your property has been vandalized or stolen, stop the record and have something. The longest most people are unable to see their properly would be the 8-10 hours they are working or sleeping. In the hours between, you'd notice the problem and then could look at the footage.

Also, modern home security cameras can be set to record if they detect motion so you don't have to ever hit "record" or actually even record for the full 24/7 but rather only at times when the cameras see something moving.

There is no VHS in the world that can record for 24 hours a day though. If you want more coverage, you have to move to a digital system that allows for greater compression of the footage and greater storage space. I would imagine that a quick conversation with ANY home security specialist will yield this information and probably the names of recommended systems.

Here's a well-rated system for under $500 that comes with a 500GB drive which can record for 120 days so there are probably cheaper systems that can do a mere 7 days but don't forget that the higher the quality of the video, the more space it requires to be stored and therefore the shorter the overall recording time becomes.

Can I use my pc camera for a security camera?

Tricatz

I would like to use my pc camera for a security camera of sorts while I'm on vacation. Maybe tak a picture every so often. (Motion sensor would be nice but I don't want to buy one.) Is there a way to set it to take a picture every hour or so?

Answer
If the PC will be left on, you'd have to hide it very well; otherwise it will be the first thing in the bag.

Webcam Timershot is a Microsoft XP PowerToy, that lets you take pictures at specified time intervals from a Webcam connected to your computer and save them to a location that you designate. This one would require a big hard drive.
OR-
Secure Cam is a motion detecting web cam surveillance software that can automatically capture a series of images whenever motion is detected in the monitored area. You can adjust the detection sensitivity, automatically archive captured still images and playback the images in sequence with the supplied viewer application. Secure Cam can monitor and display up to 99 cameras...etc.

What is a good (cheap) wireless security camera that can stay on all night? Preferably uses memory card?

My girls.

I don't know much about security cameras.. so I have no idea what to look for online. I bought a First Alert camera but it turns out I need to buy a whole bunch of other accessories for it.. So I'm returning it. I don't know if all wireless cameras use memory cards or not, but I'd like it to record on a memory card. As I do not have a DVR or anything like that. It doesn't have to have a screen for us to see what's going on. Just record on the memory card so I can watch it back on my computer.

Answer
that's easy. I once bought a security camera online, it can reach 720p quality, and support SD card, like it's full name is 720P HD Wireless Mini Indoor H.264 Network IP Camera Night Vision

I have security cameras set up, what software can I use to record images?

Hygor

I have 3 IP cameras set up. And I can see them on the computer. What is a good program so that I record the images (I want it running 15-24 hours a day recording) into an external hardrive or something?

What's a good one? And what's a good cheap one?

I tried searching but I get a lot of overcomplicated responses. It shouldn't be that hard to just record the screen right?

Answer
IP cameras are a waste of Money compared to analog cameras.

Here is a DVR that will work perfectly for you.

http://ascendentdvr.com/x4sdvr/x4s-8240dvd.html

http://www.ascendentgroup.com/~ascendent/HTML%20E-mail/X4S/x4s.html (pricing is dealer so unless your a certified installed you will probably have to pay 25% more which is still a steal of a deal)

Just about any Analog DVR will do what you are looking for and not only display them but record them as well they will also allow you to view them over the internet from a Iphone or laptop.

Many people have a misconception that IP has Superior scalability then Analog but with the advancements with DVR's this simply isn't true, you cn do up to 16,000 cameras each camera could even be from a different DVR and a different site.

And when you are using the internet to connect multiple sites together analog transmits over the internet faster with less latency using less bandwidth allowing you not only to view and monitor a situation real time but also effective control PTZ cameras.

What is the Advantage of IP?
Many of the so called advantages of IP simply don't hold water in the real world, IP is mainly Hype and marketing and outside of a few niche applications such as 1 or 2 camera installs, where MP cameras are needed or large scale wireless projects which represent about 2% of the total CCTV market, IP has very few advantages compared to analog based on performance, cost and reliability. (yet all companies touting IP will often use MP cameras to demonstrate the advantages of IP)

IP video is more about marketing then it is about performance as larger companies like Bosch pelco Honeywell axis can change for both hardware and software and once you use there cameras you have to keep using there cameras unlike analog.

Also IP sounds great, plug and play, Better image quality, use existing infrastructure, who wouldnât want that unfortunately this is often not the case.

IP is like wireless (in theory its perfect) if that was true there would be no wired cameras or analog cameras it would all be wireless IP.

IP cameras are based on CMOS
Analog cameras are based on CCD (usually)

CCD image sensors contain hundreds
of thousands picture elements, called pixels. Each pixel contains a light sensitive element and a capacitor.

A CMOS sensor is constructed using a array of pixels, but unlike CCDâs CMOS do not have a capacitor to store the charge for each pixel. The rows of pixels are activated sequentially rather then individually

This means CMOS has some significant disadvantages compared to CCD, this means CMOS
have inferior ability to cope with ambient lighting such as back light, bright, deep shadows contrasts, low light and IR this is also known as the real word.

In short unless you have perfect lighting a good CCD camera will outperform an equivalent CMOS camera.

File Size:
The smaller the files size the more images that are able to be sent and the faster they can be processed improving both FPS and speed. File size is the heart of any DVR and goes far beyond just its streaming capabilities as it also determines the recoding storage time, how much you can back up at once, how fast it renders and searches video. (Ascendents X3 DVR achieves file sizes as low as .3KB on normal image quality on a CIF image no IP camera on the market will come close to this) The file size of a DVR impacts the performance of the DVR in just about every aspect from speed to longevity and is often the most import spec of any DVR.

IP cameras have up to a 5X larger file size then analog cameras. (at same resolution) I have seen MP cameras that on 2MP resolution are over 300X (%3000) larger then our X3 DVR on a CIF image. This is an extreme case but generally speaking IP cameras have a much larger file size.

Most routers and switches are not designed to handle IP cameras they have enough bandwidth but they are not able to process the amounts of commands. (9 IP cameras 30FP is 230 instructions per second) standard routers have enough bandwidth (up to 1GB) but cant handle the amount of tasks (instructions) so frames get dropped latency is introduced and the effectiveness of other devices such as POS, printers and dats storage can be affected and compromised.

IP is a young and emerging technology and I have no doubt that in the future it will outperform analog cameras but its not a mature technology yet. Once we start to get standard IP platforms, get rid of license feesâ and existing networks have larger bandwidths then IP video will be a good solution, but until then analog is the way to go.

Make sure you get good cameras as well, Ascendent has the best IR outdoor cameras on the market and are about %50 less then Bosch while offering triple the distance.

Which is the better degree Software Engineering, Computer Science, or Computer Engineering?

best linux security camera software on ... camera, Airtight Security Plus, covert cameras, security spy cameras
best linux security camera software image

Kris

Ok so I'm currently deciding on which major I want to go for. At first I wanted to go for Software Engineering, but I realize that most schools don't offer it. They either offer Computer Engineering or Computer Science. They all look like good degrees, but I'm unsure of which the differences are. After college one of the things I want to work on is the computer system in cars or planes. So I'm wondering what the differences are, which one would be the best, and what schools would be the best for that degree!

Answer
A software engineer has one of the most in-demand, lucrative careers in the world. The number of individuals presently employed in this profession, 909,600, is almost double that of any of the other computer careers we reviewed, which makes it our TopTenREVIEWS Gold Award winner. About 57 percent of software engineers design computer applications, and the remaining 43 percent design systems software.

Software engineers have advanced math skills, which allow them to write complex algorithms required for developing software. Those who design applications build software that will be used by a person without a programming background. Examples of applications include word processors or databases. Individuals in these computer careers may be employed by companies such as Microsoft or Adobe to develop retail software packages. Or they may work instead for a general business (or as a consultant to a general business) where they develop custom, proprietary software or adapt a retail package to meet specific business needs. For example, they may work with the database administrator of a company to provide the foundation for an application to track inventory, billing, payroll, and other company revenue and expenses. They may also work with a web developer to build a program that will be accessed online.

It is the job of these professionals to make user-friendly and efficient applications so that employees can be as productive as possible. Training employees to use the applications should also be straightforward. The software should be designed to cater to skills that end-users already have so that, for example, transition from one system to another is a smooth process.

An applications software engineer works in a variety of programming languages, such as C++, Java, HTML and JavaScript. In addition to PC applications, you may design applications for other computerized devices such as cell phones, security systems and video games.

A systems software engineer works with a variety of specialists such as business professionals, network administrators and network security specialists to develop software to establish, maintain and expand the computer infrastructure of a company. Examples of software you may develop are operating systems, network protocols, device drivers and compilers. All of these kinds of software facilitate the running of applications. Operating systems, such as Microsoft Windows, Mac OS or a Linux proprietary system, run applications on a PC or Mac. Network protocols allow devices to identify and make connections with each other. An example of an internet protocol is HTTP, and a common routing protocol is EIGRP (Enhanced Interior Gateway Routing Protocol). Device drivers allow devices such as a digital camera or a flash drive to be recognized by your computer when they are connected. Compilers translate source code in languages such as C++ or Visual Basic into binary code so that it can interact with software built in different programming languages.

A computer programmer, who can be compared to a builder, is closely associated with a software engineer, who is like the architect. Software engineers work with the management of an organization to design software to meet specific business needs, where programmers carry out the programming instructions that engineers develop. However, in the computer industry, the lines of distinction between different career paths have become blurred in recent years. Individuals in these computer careers need to know how to architect, but they also need to know how to program and perform other functions with which they work on a regular basis. It is also helpful if you understand basic business functions, such as the types of information that a business needs to collect and store, as well as how a business makes money.

The range of work of an individual employed in one of many of the computer careers we reviewed depends on the size of the organization for which he works. If you work for a large organization, you are likely to fulfill a more narrow business role, but you are more likely to perform many other functions in a smaller organization.

In addition to working with PC-based systems, a systems software engineer may develop software for other computer systems, such as those found in mobile devices, automobile engines or assembly line equipment.

What was your opinion when you upgraded from XP to Ubuntu?

Linus T

I am wondering what you think of Ubuntu when you upgraded from the outdated and insecure XP.

I used Ubuntu, and find it is far more complete and more secure then anything ever seen from Microsoft.

You can actually use it without no security software because everyone targets Windows.

I will never go back to Windows. (Note: This is from a person who said a few months back that "Linux is for script kiddies" or "Linux is only used to inflate your computer ego".

Answer
I really wasn't impressed when I installed Ubuntu 7.04 from a CD. I was happy with the 25 minutes installation time, but then had loads of stupid problems - firstly I couldn't connect to wireless internet, and then I had problems trying to mount things, and found that I had to manually edit text files to set some things up....

What else - well the first thing that started to change my mind is that whilst editing one text file, I restarted and had no desktop - it wouldn't load at all, and I decided to try something. I'd set up an alias already 'sudo apt-get install' is just 'install' on my system.

I typed 'install gnome-desktop'

And it did. Wow. Then with Ubuntu 8.10 most of the issues were ironed out - just eight months later!!! Hard drives just appear and I could just format to NTFS if I wanted to, great - good for USB's.

I still have XP - but gradually I used it less, and less, and less - and now it's only for Windows games - I disabled the networking. Ubuntu works perfectly straight from a fresh install of Jaunty 9.04 - Printer, Wifie, Monitor - everything is perfect from the start.

Summary - I wasn't impressed when I first tried Ubuntu, it's too different and seems harder.

Now, however, I laugh at the amount of time I took to install XP last year, because Ubuntu installs in 25 minutes - including drivers for most stuff (nVidia is a 5 minutes download, and I have .deb installers for my printer).

I also have XP in a virtualbox for anyting that refuses to run on ubuntu and has no decent replacement (i.e. ACDSee Pro2 for moving pictures from Camera to Computer because it has a couple of killer lighting adjustment tools).

I never missed Photoshop, it is too hard and complicated - and I learned to do ten times as much stuff in GIMP in just 6 months using it (than with 3 years working with Photoshop)

Then, of course, sekurity - forgot even how to spell that. Why do you need to worry about security with your computer? just make a strong password and it's finished right? Surely nobody would ship an operating system that is Insecure by default!!!

But I can tell you, if you get interested in something like 'conky' you'll start getting really interested to edit a text file and make it your own (google search for 'crunchbang' and 'conky' and find a really cool forum for it.

Mac is for inflating ego - Mac is the BMW (based on freeBSD actually, but with layers on top that aren't open) and priced like a Benz - it's over priced and fine for poseurs everywhere.

I actually like the Mac 'globalmenu' concept, so I found out how to install it on Ubuntu - nice way to save on vertical screenspace.

Join the party, go to linuxoutlaws.com and sign up for their very funny podcast (they do a really cool 'microwatch' section every week)>

You'll love it, it's a real blast :P

BTW - never use 'Automatix' but DO use 'Ubuntu Tweak'

I live in Hamilton, ON. There are no signs posted and I can't seem to find any information online regarding this. The camera looks as if it is pointing straight at my house...into my 3 yr old daughters room! Now I may be mistaken, but I do know the 2nd camera seems to be pointed at their car which is parked on the street. I have asked and they do say yes they have cameras. Must it be posted? How much of the street or others house can be on the video? Or do they have to stop at their property line?

Answer
No

It is your private property do as you please.

Here is a DVR that will work perfectly for you.

http://www.ascendentgroup.com/x4s.htm

I would recommend a Standalone DVR as they are more reliable and since they are linux based they are virus ans spy ware free.

The X4S Series DVR is an intelligent and professional CCTV management solution, integrating the latest technology and the most advanced features while maintaining a simple, intuitive, and graphical interface. The X4S Series DVR is a 24/7 turn key solution that meets demanding security needs to suit industrial and commercial applications. The X4S DVR is compatible with the X4 platform, allowing it to act as an IP server, while still remaining a standalone solution and allows you to view your cameras instantly over the internet with a PC or cell phone like the I-phone.

For Cameras:
http://www.ascendentgroup.com/cameras.htm

also here is some information on DVR and cameras you may want to read before buying a CCTV system.

Not all DVRs and security equipment are created equal, in fact there are many options that offer varying performance much like the automobile industry. In the world of DVRs you can find the equivalent of a $10,000 Kia and a $350,000 Ferrari and everything in between. Both have 4 wheels and windshield but that where the similarities end, itâs under the hood that counts. Just like any other consumer electronic in the end you get what you pay for.

I suggest you buy a PC based DVR has they have more processing power and normally have a much smaller file size and offer more features then Standalone DVR's. I know many people buy a cheap standalone DVR, only to upgrade to a PC based in 6 months especially when they are using it to manage a store remotely. Also PC based allows you to record up to 64 cameras where a standalone will have a limit of 16.

Many people have the misconception that a PC-Based DVR is simply an off-the-shelf PC with video capture (encoder) cards, display (decoder) cards and some generic OEM software. A true DVR requires years of research and development to facilitate the seamless integration of both the hardware and software. DVRs are highly complex systems that must run 24/7, processing millions of images per day. This makes consumer-level hardware inadequate for DVRs which is why Ascendent uses custom-built PCs with performance-level hardware.

My personal favorite DVR is Ascendent X4 series: Ascendentâs Tri-Fusion Hybrid Platform allows for the creation of a true hybrid surveillance system by utilizing the advantages of Analog, Megapixel, and IP technologies for unparalleled customization and expandability. I am working on government projects and use Ascendent cameras and DVR because the offer superior performance and cost less then comparable brands like bosh, Honeywell and pelco.

The X4 also uses the latest H.264/SVC codec offer video substantially better quality,. While its file size sizes is 30% smaller than MPEG-4, 60% smaller than MPEG-2, and exponentially smaller than MJPEG.

File size is crucial to streaming because most DVRâs on the market record at real time performance (30FPS per channel) so on a 4CH is trying to send 120, 8CH 240, and a 16CH 480 images per second which requires way too much bandwidth even for the most extreme internet connections.

The smaller the files size the more images are able to be sent, and the faster they can be processed improving both FPS and speed. File size is the heart of any DVR and goes far beyond just its streaming capabilities, as it also determines the recording storage time, how much you can back up at once, how fast it renders and searches video. The file size of a DVR impacts the performance of the DVR in just about every aspect from speed to longevity and is often the most important spec of any DVR.

If you are buying a DVR and streaming is a high priority I suggest you ask for a demo and connect to the DVR to make sure it is able to stream fast enough for your needs. Most DVRs say they have remote viewing but it is often too slow and laggy to be of any use especially if it is a standalone. Some good DVR brands that I recommend are Bosch, Pelco, Honeywell and Ascendent. These brands are what security professionals use.

I recommend Ascendent as they are less expensive because they cameras for companies like Bosch and Pelco and offer better performance but any of these 3 brands will work well.

business question "antique mall owner needing security camera system" which is the best to buy?

sbarber

Just trying to get input from someone that has an antique mall of similar business. I want to purchase a camera system that I can set up in "EACH" booth or atleast every other booth. Some can be dummies but I would like for atleast half of them to be the real deal. I ahve heard of dealers using globes and dummy cameras to deter thieves; does this work?
What system would you recommend and please don't say a 10,000 one, I cant afford that at the moment.

Answer
Hello

Dummy cameras are the worst possible they don't provide security and if someone is injured or claims to be injured in your store they can sue for providing a false sense of security. No professional security installer uses dummy cameras.

The X4S DVR is compatible with the X4 platform, allowing it to act as an IP server, while still remaining a standalone solution and allows you to view your cameras instantly over the internet with a PC or cell phone like the I-phone.

also here is some information on DVR and cameras you may want to read before buying a CCTV system.

These brand manufacturers also have a complete line of CCTV cameras and DVR for any application from residential to military and stand behind there warranties. You want to get a good bran name otherwise you will likely buy a product that work and cant be returned.

How does one get their Trendnet IP100W-N Camera to stream to a Blackberry?

A K

Wanted to be able to view the security camera from my blackberry. Any ideas about how to stream the video from my security camera? As it stands, I can't access it from the Blackberry browser or Opera. The feed uses a java applet which apparently is unsupported by any of the blackberry browsers (though java is supposed to work with Blackberry's).

Thanks in advance.

Answer
I've used these cameras for some time now -- not the N models, but the earlier G and B models.

Anyway, if that Blackberry won't accept the java app that you have to use, then you're going to be stuck just looking at still images and not video.

On my ipod Touch, there is an app called "Live Cams" with provides an interface to the ipod touch to MJPEG video sources like the Trendnet cameras offer (http://livecams-iphone.com/). Perhaps there is a similar application for the Blackberry available.

Also, this web site (http://www.ehow.com/how_2076586_use-java-apps-blackberry.html) suggests that using the WAP web browser on your Blackberry is better than using the Blackberry's internet browser for Java app. Apparently the Java on Blackberry devices is a modified version, so it may still not work with the Java app provided by the IP100W-N.

I have a Swan security camera program running under a password protected user in Windows XP. Someone else uses the computer during the day and because of our timeclock is running on the same computer sometimes they have to restart the computer. When they restart it leaves us without the camera program running under the Admin user. I can't move the cameras to a different computer, so I am hoping I could just write a .bat file or something that at startup executes the camera program under the Admin user. Thanks.

Answer
You can do this with scheduled tasks. Just need the admins password to set it up.

How do you add a new computer tower and transfer your programs?

d.a.f.f.y.

I was thinking of getting a new computer tower. On our current computer we have programs installed that are necessary for our home business ie: termite program, Quickbooks, and security camera program. If I were to buy a new tower how do you transfer all of this to the new one?

Answer
The most guaranteed solution is to re-install them all again as there is no way to just transfer them.

You could try Windows Easy transfer to capture all the accounts and settings on the existing machine and add them to the new machine. You would still have to reinstall all software but your files, and many of the application settings would get transfered. You don't say which O/Ss you are dealing with so it is hard to give you specific details but it does come with the Windows disks you will get.

The other solution that would work would be to physically transfer your existing hard drive to the new machine and make it the system drive. It would require doing some changes to the O/S when the drive is transferred over. It will also probably mean that you will have a slower drive on your new system.

Sorry, but Windows s/w is not designed to allow simple transfer between systems. Would be nice at times.

I have a budget of max $300 for a good security camera system to monitor my backyard and front of the house, any suggestions?

Answer
You may have trouble finding a reliable and working camera system for only $300. I might suggest saving up a little more to add to your budget if at all possible. Good wireless cameras are going to run $180-$400+ for each camera. The ones you can buy at Wal-Mart or whatever don't work very well and are more trouble than they're worth.

You should check out either SafeMart or Home Security Store. Home Security Store is more like a "home depot" for alarm system equipment.

Here's a good article on camera systems and a link to a review of SafeMart. Hope this helps.

Stone Sues

I just bought a new security camera system that uses the 420tvl quality. I also bought a DVR that has a 500gb hard drive and a 264 compression rate. I'm just wondering how many hours of video I can hold with the DVR that I have. Thank you!!

Answer
Read the DVR manual. "420 TVL" (horizontal lines) is standard definition video. h.264 is not a compression "rate" but a standards based set of rules that allows for different compression amounts.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H.264/MPEG-4_AVC

If you select (in the DVR options) the high compression option (low quality), then 500 gig and a single standard def camera will likely provide lots more than 90 days of video. If you select low compression (high quality), then 30-60 days is probably in the ballpark.

The camera is standard def. Just because the video is recorded and compressed using h.264 does not make the video "high definition". High def video would use a camera providing 720 or 1080 horizontal lines of video resolution into the h.264 compression...

Does a security camera that uploads to a web server or ftp without a computer exist?

Striker

I want to have an always-on motion activated security camera that supports wifi or even wired ethernet that can upload to a web server or ftp. I don't want to leave my computer on all the time.

Answer
Yes. They are called IP or Network cameras.

http://video-insight.com/Purchase/Security-Cameras/IP-Cameras.aspx

Here are a few. I actually work for this company. Funny I ran across your post while answering miscellaneous questions. If you ordered from us, your camera would likely pass through my hands.

Another guy mentioned Netbotz. They are proprietary. If you want temperature readings from them, you need to buy their whole system. If you're going to do that, they are not the best. Pelco dominates the high end of this market, but they cost a fortune. If you want what you asked for which is just a camera by itself with a lot of uploading options and motion detection, I suggest a network camera by Toshiba, Canon, Axis, or Vivotek. If you want insane resolution as well, look at IQ Eye (but costly).

i want to set up a wireless internet security camera at another home where there is no internet available. Is there a self contained camera that I can just plug in and it either sends the signals to a monitor 30 miles away or can send signals to the internet so I can watch over the net?

Answer
The technology exists, I am sure, but will be very expensive. You're talking professional security gear. The lack of Internet at the other home increases the cost significantly - otherwise you could just use a waterproofed webcam. 30 miles is a long range also. Is there another house nearby with Internet that would be prepared to allow you to set up some gear and use their connection?
The more I think about it, I am convinced that it is going to be cheaper to pay for an Internet service at your other house!

How do I go about setting up a computer security camera?

RB

Could a novice person be able to set up a computer wired/wireless security camera device?

I want to set up several cameras in my house wirelessly connected to my computer that can record and I can watch if I want to "off site" with another computer.

Can I do it myself or should I have someone come and set it up?

If I can do it myself, can you give me any advise on a book or video on how to do it?

Answer
Wireless system packages may be the way to go here...a bit pricey any way you look @ it.
Google for 'home security/video cams' or similar.
After acquisition & deployment, try this application to tie it all together for remote viewing:
V-CamShow
enables you to watch your favorite web cams as a slide show or a screen saver. You can add as many web cam images to the slideshow as you want, automatically disable or reduce the refresh rate for inactive cams and more. The program comes with a large list of international locations and new web cam locations are added regularly which can be imported into your list. You can also add your own webcam to the list.

Last night my gf and I wanted to check out the new Sonics here in Minnesota. We never been to one before and we didnt know we should tip the car hop because I paid by CC at the terminal and it didnt have an option to tip. When the carhop dropped the food off she didn't seem to leave right away and something seemed strange about that she was probably waiting for a tip and I didn't offer one. We got home later and I noticed a fresh 4 inch scratch on the left side of my 2 door Grand Am. I am really upset and I called the restaurant today to inform them of what happened and they said they will review the security tapes but I doubt that their cameras will pick something like that up in detail. Is there anything else I should do or just let it go and never go there again? I am just furious because my car is cherry red and this scratch looks awful and the Sonic should fire this girl and reimburse me but how can you prove it.

Answer
Wow unreal...but you know she should never have expected a tip I lived in Oklahoma for a few years and Sonic was right across the street from my apartment. I never tipped the carhop and nothing like that ever happened, I don't know anyone in Oklahoma that ever tipped a carhop. That would be like tipping the McDonald's drive - in employee. Unfortunately you didn't catch her in the act that way you could have addressed it right then and there. But, like any situation when there is destruction of property I would fill out a police report. Because it will be on file and you might not be the only one out there that had this bad experience. Use your girlfriend as a witness be very descriptive especially in that of the character and presence of the carhop. If nothing comes about with the manager of the Sonic...go over the managers head. Even the corporation wouldn't stand for a franchise ruining their ideals. You should check and see what are the general rules for an employee at Sonic, because some fast food chains like Wendy's don't allow their employees to accept tips. Also you might want to file a complaint with the BBB Better Business Bureau, or a consumer advocacy group in your state. I would go there again, if the food was good just to set up a sting and see if she would do it again.

use of Wi-Fi technology?

karthika R

tell me the use of Wi-Fi technology in detail

Answer
Wi-Fi was originally a brand licensed by the Wi-Fi Alliance to describe the embedded technology of wireless local area networks (WLAN) based on the IEEE 802.11 standard. As of 2007, common use of the term Wi-Fi has broadened to describe the generic wireless interface of mobile computing devices, such as laptops in LANs.[citation needed] The term Wi-Fi was chosen as a play on the term "Hi-Fi", and is often thought to be an abbreviation for wireless fidelity. Wi-Fi and the Wi-Fi CERTIFIED logo are registered trademarks of the Wi-Fi Alliance, the trade organization that tests and certifies equipment compliance with the 802.11x standards.

Common uses for Wi-Fi include Internet and VoIP phone access, gaming, and network connectivity for consumer electronics such as televisions, DVD players, and digital cameras. In spite of media reports about possible health risks from Wi-Fi, scientific studies have failed to show a causal effect.
Technical information

Main article: Wi-Fi Technical Information

Wi-Fi networks use radio technologies called IEEE 802.11. These technologies have gone through several generations since their inception in 1997. Wi-Fi is supported to different extents under Microsoft Windows, Apple Computer Mac OS and open source Unix and Linux operating systems.

Uses

A person with a Wi-Fi enabled device such as a PC, cell phone or PDA can connect to the Internet when in proximity of an access point. The region covered by one or several access points is called a hotspot. Hotspots can range from a single room to many square miles of overlapping hotspots. Wi-Fi can also be used to create a mesh network. Both architectures are used in community networks.[citation needed]

Wi-Fi also allows connectivity in peer-to-peer (wireless ad-hoc network) mode, which enables devices to connect directly with each other. This connectivity mode is useful in consumer electronics and gaming applications.

When the technology was first commercialized there were many problems because consumers could not be sure that products from different vendors would work together. The Wi-Fi Alliance began as a community to solve this issue so as to address the needs of the end user and allow the technology to mature. The Alliance created the branding Wi-Fi CERTIFIED to show consumers that products are interoperable with other products displaying the same branding.

Home Wi-Fi clients come in many shapes and sizes, from stationary PCs to digital cameras. The trend as of 2007 is to incorporate wireless into every electronic where mobility is desired.[citation needed]

Wi-Fi devices in home or consumer-type environments can connect via a broadband Internet connection into a single router which can serve both wired and wireless clients. They can also use ad-hoc mode for client to client connections, and be built into non-computer devices to enable wireless connectivity to the Internet.

Business and industrial Wi-Fi has become ubiquitous as of 2007. In business environments, increasing the number of Wi-Fi access points provides redundancy, support for fast roaming and increase overall network capacity by using more channels or creating smaller cells. Wi-Fi enables wireless voice applications (VoWLAN or WVOIP). Over the years, Wi-Fi implementations have moved toward 'thin' access points, with more of the network intelligence housed in a centralized network appliance, relegating individual Access Points to be simply 'dumb' radios. Outdoor applications may utilize true mesh topologies. As of 2007, Wi-Fi installations can provide a proactive, self-managed network that functions as a security gateway, firewall, DHCP server, intrusion detection system, and a myriad of other features not previously considered relevant to a wireless network.[citation needed]

The most publicly visible use of Wi-Fi is at hotspots, including:

* Free Wi-Fi at venues like Panera Bread, It's a Grind Coffee House, select hotels, and over 100,000 locations in the USA has been growing in popularity. According to a door-to-door survey in San Jose, CA, the number of venues and users is growing fast.[citation needed]
* Paid Wi-Fi at venues like Starbucks, McDonalds, and at hotels. This trend is growing rapidly at venues that require a higher rate of customer churn, such as sit-down restaurants.[citation needed]
* Metropolitan-wide WiFi (Mu-Fi) already has more than 300 projects in process.[3]

I already have an alarm system at home. Should I still install a home security camera?

Answer
Yes, this is a great deterrence. The crook is more likely to pass you by and hit a less well defended home, just like a bonehead will look for an unlocked car to hot wire.

Also, if the camera is hooked up to a recording device, you stand a good chance of catching and convicting a burglar if a break-in does happen.

This link will explain your options.
