YesYouHave

Hi, I'm trying to set up a personal security camera and am having trouble figuring out where to start. I have a v-stream capture card and plenty of spare pc towers. The card has one av in, and one sv in. Any suggestions on where to start are appreciated. And yes, any tickling sensation you're scratching is scabies and hydrogen peroxide is the easiest cure (keeping away from eyes). Spread the knowledge- thx!

Answer
download capture software, install card, install software, hook up camera ( usually av in )

Can I use my pc camera for a security camera?

Tricatz

I would like to use my pc camera for a security camera of sorts while I'm on vacation. Maybe tak a picture every so often. (Motion sensor would be nice but I don't want to buy one.) Is there a way to set it to take a picture every hour or so?

Answer
If the PC will be left on, you'd have to hide it very well; otherwise it will be the first thing in the bag.

Webcam Timershot is a Microsoft XP PowerToy, that lets you take pictures at specified time intervals from a Webcam connected to your computer and save them to a location that you designate. This one would require a big hard drive.
OR-
Secure Cam is a motion detecting web cam surveillance software that can automatically capture a series of images whenever motion is detected in the monitored area. You can adjust the detection sensitivity, automatically archive captured still images and playback the images in sequence with the supplied viewer application. Secure Cam can monitor and display up to 99 cameras...etc.
Both freeware. Both here:

I want to install a security camera to see if/who is continously going through my terrace and ripping holes into my gate.

The problem is, I have no where to install the camera. The door leading outside is entirely made of glass, so I was thinking of installing it near there and pointing the camera outside.

Would that work? Or would there be glare problems and such?

Answer
Yes it would, In the top LEFT hand corner of your door point it directly at the gate and when you see those punks I suggest you call the cops FAST and see if you can stop them yourself.

Good luck with your problem. I have recently dealt with the same thing. My son's bike was stolen by a punk kid from the projects with some bolt cutters to cut through 2 steel gates and 1 steel lock with 4,000 strings of steel.

Where can I find security cameras for my yard?

I want to put 1 or more security cameras in my yard for many reasons. I want to know how much this will cost and where i can buy this. I want something that records and stores footage so when i go on vacation I could view the footage when i arrive home. Any tips or sugestions?
Thanks.
I want this to be as cheap as possible so i don't think running a cord through my yard would work.
I want this to be as cheap as possible.

Answer
To recorder the video you need a computer with lot of hard drive space or a video recorder - this can be digital or analog.

I use a DVR similar to this one:
http://shop3.frys.com/product/5264307;jsessionid=LUbMxK4-T8mXlplSCVHxJQ**.node1?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG
You need to add a hard drive. One of these is probably good enough for around 30 days of recording:
http://shop3.frys.com/product/4570717;jsessionid=LUbMxK4-T8mXlplSCVHxJQ**.node1?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG
but a 500 gig is probably a better idea. Set the image capture so when nothing is going on, there is only 1 still every 4 or more seconds, then set motion detection areas to trigger the recording to go to real time - that will revert to the 1 per four seconds (or whatever you choose) after about 15 seconds of no motion in the detection area.

Then comes the cameras... Higher resolution or night vision or wireless or rated for outdoor add to the cost. Remember - wireless is only wireless for the video signal - you still need power for the camera. If wired, the low-res are probably the cheapest cameras you will find with decent resolution.
This is probably as cheap as it gets - the night vision "throw" is not very far...
http://shop3.frys.com/product/4748899?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG
If you only need it for a one-time deal and install the camera under the roof-eve, you can use a indoor camera - but just so you know, it won't last as long as a camera rated for outdoor use.

I use these:
http://shop3.frys.com/product/5080315?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG
good resolution and long throw on the night vision.

I am not aware of single channel DVRs... since you have 4 channels, you can use up to 4 cameras - but you do not need to fill all the channels.

If you are that paranoid, you might also consider a battery back up - the cameras and the DVR need to plug into it.
Since we don't know the cameras you want to use, we don't know the power they draw - but this
http://shop3.frys.com/product/4775399?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG
should last a couple of hours with just the DVR.

Be sure to install the DVR in a place that is (1) difficult to find and (2) attached to something solid so it cannot be easily removed.

Did you mac users think the product was worth the money?

I'm debating whether or not to buy a Macbook or a new Dell PC, and i'm leaning towards Mac. The only thing stopping me though is the high price. I'm only in 9th grade, so I don't exactly have a fountain of money in my bedroom. I'm wondering if a Mac is worth saving my money for long enough to buy it or if I should get the cheaper Dell PC. Also, if anyone's had both a Mac and a PC, if you could tell me which one you liked the most, that would be awesome.

Thanks.

Answer
Avoid the Mac, I would get the Dell for the price (or Asus or htttp://www.powernotebooks.com for top quality)

PC=Variety of specs, options, quality, prices, vendors, support
Mac=One vendor, limited options, still more expensive. Look below for more information..

Today, Macs use a subset of PC hardware. Why spend extra to get the same CPU chips, graphics cards and OS X isn't as secure as you think..

Don't believe the lies that Macs are better than PCs at graphics/animation.. Dreamworks Animation http://www.dreamworksanimation.com/ under studio click on Technology of Animation, an independent film maker I know uses PCs, a graphic artist I used to know uses PCs also.

A number of PCs can also run OS X (Mac OS) http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=os+x+on+pc&btnG=Google+Search&aq=0&oq=os+x+on+ as well just that Apple makes it illegal in order to get Market share.. The reason why Mac can run native Windows is because it is using a subset of PC hardware,

If you decide to buy a Mac for running Windows, you will still have to get the same virus/spyware protection, and run into the same issues as a regular PC.

Now is a Mac worth buying for OS X?

I say: NO... for the following reasons...

ADVANTAGES WINDOWS :
Aprox 90% of the market is Windows and most PCs have windows already pre-installed.
1) Some websites require Internet Explorer, to run IE on Mac you really get ies4osx which is the Windows version of IE running really buggy and illegal if you don't have a legitimate copy of Windows.
2) Supports more devices (printers and other things you hook into the computer).
3) More business software/games
4) Want the dock on OS X (Mac)? google/yahoo rocketdock, objectdoc.
5) Used by businesses.

ADVANTAGES LINUX :
1) FREE (most versions are)
2) Install software by either 1) Synaptic Package Manager, 2) Add/Remove 3) Opening a .deb or .rpm file (depending on distribution)
2) Like the Mac OS X effects? go yahoo/google COMPIZ FUSION which can do any cool effect a Mac can do and many ore....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N3gkX9HDfEE (there is no flickering when you use it like on the video, not sure why the person has the flicker)
3) Mac OS X Doc? google/yahoo Avant Window Navigator.Cairo Dock, http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x3rf5q_cairo-dock-mac-os-x-leopard-dock-on_tech
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p0hzi22g2DE
4) It is FASTER/MORE SECURE to surf on the internet
5) Some Windows programs work with Wnehq/Crossover (also avail on Mac, but why pay $$$)

SECURITY
Mac OS X was hacked in 2006 less than 30 minutes, and within 2 minutes in a contest in 2008, and within 10 seconds in 2009. In 2008, Linux and Vista were not hacked until another day when restrictions were lowered. Vista was next, and then Linux. In 2009 Windows 7 fell shortly after the Mac but Linux was unscathed.
Macs are standardized with Cameras, if your Mac gets hacked, the hacker can turn on your camera with more ease.
Please Note: All OS's have vulnerabilities.

VIRUSES
Mac OS X has viruses (and significantly on the rise), a friend of mine has a virused Mac. As more users use Macs, more viruses will come out for it. Especially when users think "they are safe".

QUALITY/PROBLEMS
Contrary to belief, Macs are not better quality. Apple also has been changing suppliers to try to "lower the price" and thus lowering quality. Even with the lower prices, Macs still cost more, they spend a higher percent of budget trying to make it look pretty, and marketing.

Sample of problems: Deleting your Data (Snow Leopard), Overheating Macbooks, OS X- not responding to keyboard, some units with 16bit screens, etc. Apple statistics are misleading since Mac users with problem machines are more likely to go out and buy a new computer than PC users. Apple is lowering prices which means you can expect lower quality than in the past. Apple had switched the manufacturers producing parts. OS X also has problems slowing down.

Repairs are more expensive than PCs since the IMac, Mac Mini are compact units, and Apple charges a premium for their services. Some repairs can be done by another repair service but the compact design of the computer causes problems.
With an IMac, if the problem is with the monitor, the whole computer would have to be brought in.
IMac and Mac mini lack expansion.

PRICE
A similar equipped PC is much cheaper to purchase than Mac. Lets use Dell (but you can compare with another PC Brand if you like)

**(DESKTOP)

PLEASE NOTE: I compare Apple Mac's vs Dells best deal. If you really want an all-in one the Dell all-in-one has more ram, wireless keyboard and mouse and equivalent to $400 for free making the Imac still more expensive when you matching specs. Personally I don't think the All-in-Ones are a good choice, and consider them overpriced, lack expandability and repairs both more expensive and require the entire computer.

PS: Apple knows that they need to make Macintosh look different than PC so all Macs except the Mac Pro will not have a tower option. Apple's low end lacks expandability but it makes the Mac "look different", if Mac had a tower for low-end, more people would realize the similarities between the two.

Dell: ($700)
CPU: 2.33 GHZ Dell Inspiron QUAD (4 Processor) CORE
SCREEN: 20inch Screen
MEMORY: 4GB Ram
HARD DRIVE: 500 GB hard Drive
OPTICAL DRIVE: 16x DVD/CD Read/Writer

http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?oc=dddwra4&c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&kc=desktop-inspiron-537s

The Mac Mini since it has no monitor, keyboard, mouse, very skimpy on options and setup and is not the best deal... The IMac is better price than the Mac Mini.

IMac ($1300)
CPU: 2.4 GHZ DUAL (2 Processor) CORE (SLOWER CPU)
SCREEN: 20inch Screen
MEMORY: (upgrade to) 4GB Ram (SAME)
HARD DRIVE: (upgrade to ) 320 GB hard Drive (LESS HARD DRIVE)

What crafting, home decor, and/or fashion magazines can I subscribe to from the USA?

best security camera australia on Security Equipment Melbourne? Sensational Range, Very Affordable
best security camera australia image

Alyssa

I'm looking for inspirational crafting, home decor, and/or fashion magazines that will ship to the USA. I found a magazine called Frankie, but it's only available in Australia as far as I could see. Google searches didn't bring up anything that fit what I need. The magazines I do NOT want: sewing, crocheting, knitting, embroidery, quilting.

I plan on reading these magazines and cutting them up after I've finished them, all to add these inspirational images and articles to an inspiration board, and turn the remainder into envelopes for snail mail.

Please help?

Is it safe to leave my camera in the car?

?

I'm going on a road trip this weekend and once we arrive at our destination, we'll park the car and not return to it for about 5 hours. Is it safe to leave my digital SLR camera in the car. I have a case for it and everything and i want to take pictures once we return, but will the heat or other factors affect my camera?

Answer
At this time of year in the Northern Hemisphere I would think you should be fine. (I have melted plastic in cameras in the same situation in the summer.)

If you are in Australia or security is an issue then we may need to re-think this answer.

How does live monitoring from security camera's work?

Metal

We need a security camera for our home. When away, how does live monerting work through your iPhone or Android ? We live our little dog alone all day and would like to be able to check on him by this security camera too. Do you have to have a internet hookup, or phone hook up, how does it work to be able to broadcast that video to your iPhone or Droid?

Answer
Hi "Metal":

The most important thing to have, when setting up an internet-based camera (called an IP camera), is to have a good broadband (non-dialup, always on) internet connection at your house. It doesn't have to be high-speed cable modem (from your cable company) or fiber-optic (like Verizon FiOS or ATT U-verse), but at least a DSL-line from your phone company.

The IP cameras (or even a webcam connected to one of your computers) need to be connected to a home "network" or LAN (Local Area Network) via either WiFi --for wireless cams-- or using regular Ethernet (Cat5 or Cat6) cables to an internet router. If you just plan on having one camera connected to your PC, then you could use the computer as the "router", but routers are cheap ($20-$40 if you shop wisely) and simple to set up.

Your iPhone or Android device would simply use a web browser to log onto your home network, using an IP address & password, and you would watch your camera just like watching a YouTube feed, except that it would be "live".

Here's a YouTube demo of this using an iPhone, by a good security camera company: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PnP_Dbqn1Cw&feature=related

There are plenty of other YouTube demos and tutorials, if you search around. I added a link to Swann cameras' website tutorials (they're the largest seller of DIY security systems) in my Sources below, as another good information resource.

hope this helps,

How can I get a pc monitor to be used as a cctv monitor? I have a security camera and a nice lcd monitor, how

JIM W

I want to use a pc monitor to view images from a security camera. The camera has rca type out puts, but the inputs to my monitor are for the computer. Is there any way to connect the two without a major investment?

Thanks

Answer
There are two ways to do this

1) As mentioned already, try a TV tuner card which allows you to connect a RCA type connection to the PC. You can then use the PC as normal with the ability to open a window to watch the video. This can be full screen or adjustable to a smaller size. You can buy from Circuit City in USA or Maplin in UK. The TV card comes as a PCI card to install inside the computer or as a USB device. See more info from manufacturer http://www.hauppauge.com for more information. Costs from $40

2) If you want to connect the Camera directly to a PC TFT monitor, then you will need a VGA convertor. This takes a RCA type connection and converts any video to VGA and connects to the VGA connection as on the back of your monitor. Again, these are available at Circuit City or Maplins. This costs more though but is the only way for a direct connection. Costs from $80

Hope this info helps

Billy

I am interested in buying a wireless security camera system but I don't know where I can find one. It's not something I can just find at walmart. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Answer
WOW bad avice

You can take your advice from people who Google or a security professional who specializes in CCTV.

Peter Brissette: there is nothing new about the products on your website in fact there are many misleading statements. many offer 3G and IE connection.

On your website you claim:
4GB Micro SD Card for video storage (7 to 10 days)

Truth: a high resolution camera with the smallest file size will use over 15GB-30GB a day (with 40% motion) a 4GB card will give you hours not days.

There is nothing new about the products you offer they are lower then the average product out there.
There good for nany cameras but not for a security system.

the products you sell (except for PTZ) only fixed cameras which will almost never work as you cant adjust the view.

there is nothing bad about your products but they are not high end please don't claim them to be.
They should mainly be used for nany cameras not for people who are interested in security (I don't think you even have watermark so images wont hold up in court though cant confirm as your website has very little information and even less specs.)

Hello sorry about that

You don't want to record 24 hours a day you want to record on motion so if there is no moment you don't records this will increase your storage a and decrease the amount of video you need to look for.

Very few cameras offer true day night performance mainly companies claim but rarely deliver.

For night operation you need IR cameras or very good lighting I suggest the latter.

You want to stick with a brand for day night cameras such as Bosch, Ascendent, Pelco and honeywell

A good outdoor Camera will have

High resolution (520TVL or higher)
Good signal to noise ratio (S/N 49DB or 50DB)
A true Sony CCD (not Chinese knockoff)
Rugged enclosure to handle vandals and environments
At least IP 66 and a suitable temperature rating for you region
IR LED's to see in pitch dark: active IR rating not projected IR as projected IR has no coloration with how far the camera can see.
2 or 3 different sized LED;s 1 size LED one type of illumination means you either wont get distance or wide angle and you want both.

I would go with the VIS-56IR-2910
http://dealer.ascendentgroup.com//dvr-irâ¦

this camera will give you 110 feet of clear vision in complete darkness and great images by day its the on I recommend for budget customer who need outdoor IR camera.

Cameras that have high resolution, and great signal to noise ratio can reducing file size on DVR's up to 50% and offer better images.

here is a write up I did on CCTV a while ago hope it helps

Not all DVRs are created equal, in fact there are many options that offer varying performance much like the automobile industry. In the world of DVRs you can find the equivalent of a $10,000 Kia and a $350,000 Ferrari and everything in between. Both have 4 wheels and windshield but that where the similarities end, itâs under the hood that counts. Just like any other consumer electronic in the end you get what you pay for.

I suggest you buy a PC based DVR has they have more processing power and normally have a much smaller file size and offer more features then Standalone DVR's. I know many people buy a cheap standalone DVR, only to upgrade to a PC based in 6 months especially when they are using it to manage a store remotely. Also PC based allows you to record up to 64 cameras where a standalone will have a limit of 16.

Many people have the misconception that a PC-Based DVR is simply an off-the-shelf PC with video capture (encoder) cards, display (decoder) cards and some generic OEM software. A true DVR requires years of research and development to facilitate the seamless integration of both the hardware and software. DVRs are highly complex systems that must run 24/7, processing millions of images per day. This makes consumer-level hardware inadequate for DVRs which is why Ascendent uses custom-built PCs with performance-level hardware.

My personal favorite DVR is Ascendent X4 series: Ascendentâs Tri-Fusion Hybrid Platform allows for the creation of a true hybrid surveillance system by utilizing the advantages of Analog, Megapixel, and IP technologies for unparalleled customization and expandability. I am working on government projects and use Ascendent cameras and DVR because the offer superior performance and cost less then comparable brands like bosh, Honeywell and pelco.

The X4 also uses the latest H.

I will be viewing it remotely. Aside from the camera kit, do I need a PC on site? Do I need my own a web site?

Answer
David , Every single one of your posts relating to security cameras advertises techcctv which is blatant disregard of posting rules.

All you need is a DVR with internet hooked up.
and allow your router to let the DVR stream the images by forwarding a port (normally port 80)

most DVR will allow you to conect iwth internet explorer and view your images online.

Bellow is a writup just becasue DVR lets you connect does not me it will be usefull some DV iamges are poor wuality and tranmit so slow they are useless ready bellow for more information.

Cameras capture images which are then sent to a DVR (digital video recorder) which then based on your setting decides what images to keep example only keep images when there is movement (motion recording).

The X4 also uses the latest H.264/SVC codec offer video substantially better quality,. While its file size sizes is 30% smaller than MPEG-4, 60% smaller than MPEG-2, and exponentially smaller than MJPEG.

File size is crucial to streaming because most DVRâs on the market record at real time performance (30FPS per channel) so on a 4CH is trying to send 120, 8CH 240, and a 16CH 480 images per second which requires way too much bandwidth even for the most extreme internet connections.

The smaller the files size the more images are able to be sent, and the faster they can be processed improving both FPS and speed. File size is the heart of any DVR and goes far beyond just its streaming capabilities, as it also determines the recording storage time, how much you can back up at once, how fast it renders and searches video. The file size of a DVR impacts the performance of the DVR in just about every aspect from speed to longevity and is often the most important spec of any DVR.

If you are buying a DVR and streaming is a high priority I suggest you ask for a demo and connect to the DVR to make sure it is able to stream fast enough for your needs. Most DVRs say they have remote viewing but it is often too slow and laggy to be of any use especially if it is a standalone. Some good DVR brands that I recommend are Bosch, Pelco, Honeywell and Ascendent. These brands are what security professionals use.

I recomend Ascendent as they are cheaper then bosch and pelco and offer better performance but any of these 3 brands will work well.

Answer
. I couldn't find anything specifically about web cams but I would imagine it's possible.
Go to your largest security, or spy shop and ask about a 'conversion' kit. Or Radio Shack should have cables for that. Go wireless.

I have never used Mac but I've heard many times that one big advantage of Macs over Windows PCs is that Macs do not get infected with viruses so I don't have to buy anti-virus software like I do with my PC. Is that true? Why is it that Macs are immune to computer viruses?

Answer
VIRUSES
Mac OS X has viruses (and significantly on the rise), a friend of mine has a virused Mac. As more users use Macs, more viruses will come out for it. Especially when users think "they are safe".

Sample of problems: Overheating Macbooks, OS X- not responding to keyboard, some units with 16bit screens, etc.

What kind of computer should I get?

Life Vs De

I was wondering about getting a new computer/laptop because mine is completely busted! Either a regular PC or a Mac, I would like some opinions on what to get seen as though I've had mine for a few years. And I would also like to know how much a Mac goes for... In pounds though!

Answer
PC (Asus for top quality) Mac basic laptop is &800+

PRICE
A similar equipped PC is much cheaper to purchase than Mac. Lets use Dell (but you can compare with another PC Brand if you like)

**(LAPTOP)
Dell Inspiron Laptop Starting Price: $500
Ending Price: $500
15" Screen
CPU: 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo [5% slower]
Graphics: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X4500HD [Not as good/fine for general use[
Memory: 3GB DDR2 SDRAM [75% of ram)
Hard Drive: 320GB Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm (same)

Cybperpower Notebook Xplorer X5-2900 Starting Price: $755
Ending Price After upgrades (not including 5% rebate): $860
15" Screen
CPU: (upgrade to) 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo (+$100) [FASTER]
Graphics: Nvidia GFORCE 9600-GT 512MB [MUCH FASTER/BETTER CARD]
Memory: 4GB DDR2 SDRAM [MORE MEMORY]
Hard Drive: (upgrade to) 320GB Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm (+$5) [LARGER HARD DRIVE]
http://www.cyberpowerpc.com/system/Xplorer_X5-2900_Notebook/detail

Macbook Starting laptop Price: $1000
Ending Price After Upgrades: $1200
13" Screen (SMALLER)
CPU: 2.1GHz Intel Core 2 Duo (SLOWER)
Graphics: Nvidia GFORCE 9400 256MB
Memory: (upgrade to) 4GB DDR2 SDRAM (SAME)
Hard Drive (upgrade to) 320B Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm (SAME)
http://store.apple.com/us/configure/MC240LL/A?mco=NjcxMTQ3Ng

GRAPHICS: ATI Radeon HD 512MB
http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?oc=dddwra4&c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&kc=desktop-inspiron-537s

OPTICAL DRIVE: 8x DVD Reader/Writer (1/2 speed)
GRAPHICS: Nvidia Geforce 9400M (APPROX SAME BUT LESS MEMORY GAPHICS)

Which Surveillance outdoor camera is good to buy?

Betty

Around my house and my backyard I cached few black kids and got tired to call cop o them. I m thinking put security camera. Cant give decision which camera is good? Wireless with built in monitor or with dvd and I need extra cabel wires to join it? Plz help

Answer
Ms. Betty I understand your concern for the safety of your property, yourself, and the neighborhood. I found a great surveillance system that has everything you need to setup a small system at your house and start monitoring your home. The package comes with 2 color cameras that switch to black and white at night to better monitor what is going on at night. The great thing about the system is that you can view the live feed from your smartphone so that you can still monitor your home while you are away on vacation.

I have a security camera, but it does not have night vision. Is there anyway I can make one, or get one under $10, to makw it easier for my security camera at night? (The lights can not be seen by the human eye)

Answer
use ordinary lighting for security at night. it ups the bar for anyone trying to do wrong if clearly visible, so that is as much a deterrent as cameras. ordinary lighting will give more detail and color which are important clues to making an ID. IR is monochrome and blurry and in some cases not admissable as evidence.

the cheap IR illuminators simply use LED's. they provide enough IR to be useful at about 2 meters (6 feet) maximum distance, great for camcorders at parties. totally useless for surveilence. you need the military type IR lamps, about the size of a small refrigerator to cover a parking lot.

not seen by human? get real, all a crook has to do is use a pocket digital camera to find IR illumination sources. doh.

Please send a link to the equipment (is it just a pc card?) that I'd need

Answer
Please don't give advice when you have clearly never worked with CCTV equipment. Amazon sells complete junk and the video taken by non CCTV cameras often wont hold up in coart because they need water marking in the images.

What you want is a DVR a DVR converts analog cameras and as well as storing images on site allows you to distribute video over LAN and WAN networks. (internet and network) this way you have both on site storage and recording at your house.

Just about any Analog DVR will do what you are looking for and not only display them but record them as well they will also allow you to view them over the internet from a Iphone or laptop.

Many people have a misconception that IP has Superior scalability then Analog but with the advancements with DVR's this simply isn't true, you cn do up to 16,000 cameras each camera could even be from a different DVR and a different site.

And when you are using the internet to connect multiple sites together analog transmits over the internet faster with less latency using less bandwidth allowing you not only to view and monitor a situation real time but also effective control PTZ cameras.

What is the Advantage of IP?
Many of the so called advantages of IP simply don't hold water in the real world, IP is mainly Hype and marketing and outside of a few niche applications such as 1 or 2 camera installs, where MP cameras are needed or large scale wireless projects which represent about 2% of the total CCTV market, IP has very few advantages compared to analog based on performance, cost and reliability. (yet all companies touting IP will often use MP cameras to demonstrate the advantages of IP)

IP video is more about marketing then it is about performance as larger companies like Bosch pelco Honeywell axis can change for both hardware and software and once you use there cameras you have to keep using there cameras unlike analog.

Also IP sounds great, plug and play, Better image quality, use existing infrastructure, who wouldnât want that unfortunately this is often not the case.

IP cameras are based on CMOS
Analog cameras are based on CCD (usually)

A CMOS sensor is constructed using a array of pixels, but unlike CCDâs CMOS do not have a capacitor to store the charge for each pixel. The rows of pixels are activated sequentially rather then individually

This means CMOS has some significant disadvantages compared to CCD, this means CMOS
have inferior ability to cope with ambient lighting such as back light, bright, deep shadows contrasts, low light and IR this is also known as the real word.

In short unless you have perfect lighting a good CCD camera will outperform an equivalent CMOS camera.

File Size:
The smaller the files size the more images that are able to be sent and the faster they can be processed improving both FPS and speed. File size is the heart of any DVR and goes far beyond just its streaming capabilities as it also determines the recoding storage time, how much you can back up at once, how fast it renders and searches video.

IP cameras have up to a 5X larger file size then analog cameras. (at same resolution) I have seen MP cameras that on 2MP resolution are over 300X (%3000) larger then our X3 DVR on a CIF image. This is an extreme case but generally speaking IP cameras have a much larger file size.

Most routers and switches are not designed to handle IP cameras they have enough bandwidth but they are not able to process the amounts of commands. (9 IP cameras 30FP is 230 instructions per second) standard routers have enough bandwidth (up to 1GB) but cant handle the amount of tasks (instructions) so frames get dropped latency is introduced and the effectiveness of other devices such as POS, printers and dats storage can be affected and compromised.

Donât get me wrong there are some brutal analog cameras and DVR out there but If you see a good D1 resolution image such as Ascendents Hardware compressed you will not be so quick to join the IP bandwagon.

IP is a young and emerging technology and I have no doubt that in the future it will outperform analog cameras but its not a mature technology yet. Once we start to get standard IP platforms, get rid of license feesâ and existing networks have larger bandwidths then IP video will be a good solution, but until then analog is the way to go.

Make sure you get good cameras as well, Ascendent has the best IR outdoor cameras on the market and are about %50 less then Bosch while offering triple the distance.

Answer
Jesus Christ, man, you don't need to list the complete specs.

It will be okay with older games, but 1.9 GHz CPU might struggle with newer games intended for 2.63 GHz CPUs. The turbo feature means you should be able to play the games for short periods of time, but it can only maintain that processor speed for limited amounts of time, causing risk of overheating if you run it too long.

I'd say you can play everything from before 2009 with that baby. Decent for a laptop, but if you want to game new games, you might want to look for a 2.5GHz or more processor. It would be far cheaper to buy a stationary.

Can this laptop run games like fallout 3 and skyrim?

Answer
Easily.
The graphics card is very good.
The ram is more than enough.
The processor is decent or slightly above decent. (I think)
The processor will bottleneck that computer's graphics card when playing games like Crysis on maximum settings. (bottle necking means the processor is stopping your graphics card from it's full potential, if you have an amazing graphics card and a bad processor, the processor will run games very slow even though your graphics card is very good.)
Don't worry though, 2.3ghz is more than enough for fall out 3 and skyrim.

Setting up streaming or remote access for security camera?

best security dome camera on Foscam Wifi Wireless Waterproof IR IP Camera FI8905W | eBay
best security dome camera image

Michael

Hello, I have just purchased both a wired dome security camera as well as a wireless bullet camera with receiver. Now viewing the camera's live footage on a tv is easy enough but I would like to set up remote access similar to an IP camera so I can view the footage in real time online. How would I go about this?

Answer
If you have a dvr (thats the thing that is used to record the cameras) and if that dvr is internet capable then yes, but otherwise not if it it isnt an ip cam.

How come so many business invest in security surveillance systems that can not identify someone?

Scott

It seems like I am always viewing these images from security cameras on TV or on the internet and a person commiting a crime will be standing only a few meters away and yet you can barely see their face. I looked up these cameras on the internet and they are also expensive. Whats the deal? Also what is better dome cameras or the other normal looking ones?

Answer
Faulty expectations. If the camera was bought to replace a live person to positivly identify someone, it was bought for the wrong purpose. If it is used as an extra set of eyes for someone who is monitoring all activity, then it is used properly. The dome cameras are simply standard cameras housed in a dome so no one knows where it is pointed and will not be as distrubing to see compared to a bunch of cameras pointing at you.

Tyler M

We're looking to set up an inexpensive network security camera in our home. I already have ethernet wiring in most of the house, and a Windows 2003 server that could run any software required to record video. I'm looking for a fairly inexpensive IP-based security camera. Any recommendations ?

Answer
I would recommend that you read up on video surveillance. there are lots of security cameras in the market that can specialize in a variety of things. there are simple ones that simply records videos while there are others that have night vision which is good for dimly lit environment. here's a good site to start on: http://www.video-surveillance-guide.com

Is it possible to watch a live security camera from a Ipod touch?

I need a wireless (bluetooth?) night security camera with the best possible resolution. What is the best option and how much does it cost?

Also the smallest the better!

Answer
I've included a link to a wireless security camera with infrared. That way, you'll get great night resolution in black and white. Its small and can be mounted pretty much anywhere. The company has a great reputation. Good luck!

Does a security camera that uploads to a web server or ftp without a computer exist?

Striker

I want to have an always-on motion activated security camera that supports wifi or even wired ethernet that can upload to a web server or ftp. I don't want to leave my computer on all the time.

Answer
Yes. They are called IP or Network cameras.

http://video-insight.com/Purchase/Security-Cameras/IP-Cameras.aspx

Here are a few. I actually work for this company. Funny I ran across your post while answering miscellaneous questions. If you ordered from us, your camera would likely pass through my hands.

Another guy mentioned Netbotz. They are proprietary. If you want temperature readings from them, you need to buy their whole system. If you're going to do that, they are not the best. Pelco dominates the high end of this market, but they cost a fortune. If you want what you asked for which is just a camera by itself with a lot of uploading options and motion detection, I suggest a network camera by Toshiba, Canon, Axis, or Vivotek. If you want insane resolution as well, look at IQ Eye (but costly).
