What size solar panel would be needed to operate a small device needing 2 amps. to run for a short times ....?

I asked this question and did get a good answer , so i thought I would be more detailed about what I am trying to do and get a final answer before I make my purchase of a panel kit. A security camera that needs 5 volts and 2 amps. to run. that is connected to a 400 watt 8 amp. power inverter. That would be attached to a rechargeable sealed 18 ah 12 volt battery. Note : I already have camera, inverter and the battery. The camera would only be on drawing power when viewing being it can be remotely turned off and on. Panel would have average sun light during the day - (est. 6-8 hours daily). So with the detailed info. : Need 5 volts 2 amps. to run my wireless camera . I have a 12 volt 18 ah sealed rechargeable battery and a 400 watt 8 amp. inverter. Camera only on a few times daily for short periods to view.
In simple terms ( new to solar stuff ).... what size solar panel in watts / amps is needed to keep battery charged up and ready when needed ? Am I correct that amp output of panel could be slightly less then the 2 amps.that's needed to run camera being it would get the power ( the 2 amps) from battery and then panel would recharge the battery back up to full power when not on and drawing any power ?. My research tells me a 40 watt , 3 amp. panel would work ?. Thank you in advance for any help and advice. Please keep simple if possible !
Thanks for the help and advice. As I stated I already have the 12 volt battery, the inverter, and the camera. That is what I will use. It is a ac camera with a standard 110 plug to be plugged into a wall outlet. Being this is going to be used at a remote site and no power I need to use a converter.
Looking for answer based on info. I provided above. Will say the camera would be on under 3 hours a day if that helps. I just want to buy a panel with converter that will work with what I have. Thanks

Answer
you need to compute the watt hours used per day . it takes 24watts(12v times 2a) say for 0.5 hours total . that would be 12 watt hours . allowing the battery as 50% efficient so thats 24watt hours input needed. but the inverter has losses too so youre looking at say 32watt hours . A rule of thumb is that in europe and northeast US you can reckon on about 3 times peak panel output per day . so you would need a 11 watt panel to generate 32 watt hours . looked at in amps 11 watts is about 1 amp peak from the panel.
you can adjust these ball park figures depending on your estimate of the total hours that the camera runs.
I agree with Steve that a 6volt battery and panel would be better and eliminate the inverter . his approach is the correct engineering way and needs less than half the power and therefore half the size of panel for a 12 volt system . I know you want to use the parts you have so using my calculations above you have said 3hours running so i need to multiply my above calculation by 6 = 66 watt panel.
in most of US you get a higher sun level so you probably would be able to use around 45 watts panel.

what are the best security cameras to use for night recording? IR or low lux?

I am putting in a surveillance system because our house is getting constantly tp'ed and want to figure out who is doing it. Cost isn't really a problem but within reason, I obviously am not going to install FLIRs around my house but something in the $100-200 range per camera. Also, does anyone have any good DVRs in mind? I want the best picture quality and internet viewing.
Thanks!

i have a hp-460 with windows 7 pro installed. i want to connect two cctv security cameras to record video./audio... how should i connect the co-ax cables?.. do i need extra equipment?

Answer
In order to connect analog cameras via co-ax cable to your windows based PC, you will need to install a DVR capture card on the PC. Here is a video tutorial on how to install a GeoVision based capture card in a PC.

http://www.apexcctv.com/video-8-install-geovision-dvr-in-pc.aspx

Once you have installed the capture card, you will need to install the Drivers for the capture card. GeoVision has its drivers on the software installation CD and is the first option when you run the software.

After you install the drivers, you will need to install the DVR software for the capture card and set the record configuration to your needs. Once this is done, you will be able to record the audio and video from your cameras to your PC.

Are there any security systems that are made specifically for cars that you can install in a vehicle? I want something that that records continuously and nonstop that I can use to see what goes on during the night to make sure nobody messes with my car. I want something that I can just put in my car and push record and just go in my house and let the system take care of the rest. I want to be able to view it then on my computer or the system. Any suggestions? Do they make anything like this?

My dad installed security cameras on our property a couple months ago and just yesterday the camera caught a young man snooping in the alley and looking into my dads truck behind the garage at 530 in the morning. Just an interesting side note. My car is always parked across the street were there is no camera pointed in that direction.

Answer
Plenty of Car DVRs are available on Amazon. Though they themselves may be items of interest to a vandal.

Perhaps you should consider a combination of a Car DVR and a CCTV camera mounted on roof of your house with a powerful optical zoom capturing the scene in detail.

A $14 camera that can be connected to a DVR. The camera is small so it can be placed more discreetly and the DVR hidden in the boot. http://www.amazon.com/Waterproof-Vehicle-Backup-High-definition-Viewing/dp/B005CTKYB4%3FSubscriptionId%3DAKIAIZ6BQD7DSLCTLVJA%26tag%3Drajsblo01-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3DB005CTKYB4

What is the best camera for streaming video on a website for cost and functionality?

Ben

Here is what I want to do: I have a contract to create a website for someone who wants to have 24-hour streaming live video of a bridge construction site. The camera that my client has is a security camera and won't work for this project, so I have to find a new one. I would prefer something that is plug-and-play or easy to set up. It would probably be set up outdoors, though a cover could be built and it would need to be able to have some zoom capability. What camera would be the best solution for both cost and functionality? Thanks in advance for the help.

I've priced a base system (1 camera with infrared capability / 80G DVR / labor) for $1100 w/ a local security company. It jumps up to $2200 for additional cameras and higher-functioning DVR (160G). Can a regular man install this sort of system?

Any and all information is appreciated.

Answer
Yes, I've installed two different digital video recording systems myself, bought the PCs from the local computer store, bought the PCI cards on-line and bought used CCTV cameras off eBay, bought the wire and connections at a local electronics store. They work like a champ.

The advantage of PCs is that the image is already digitized and I can monitor and review over the internet from another location (securely).

Approximate cost: New PC: $200 (open-box store PC returned by a previous customer, works fine), new PCI card: $29, 4 used CCTV cameras from eBay $80 ($20 each), wire and connections I didn't add it up but may run something less than $100 unless you want really long lines.

You cannot beat the quality and price of used CCTV cameras off eBay, although, like anything else eBay, you have to buy things that work. A few CCTV cameras I bought didn't work. Not knowing anything about cameras, I opened them up anyway and resoldered loose connections and they worked!

My second system has a similar PC except I bought a nicer PCI card for about $250 and have indoor/outdoor IR (night lighted) cameras that cost around $100 each.

They both have been running fine for over a year so far. And I'm not a security or PC expert but have learned a few things along the way.

My cat has been gone for a week is that too long?

Samantha

He was an outdoor cat then we moved and tried to make him and indoor cat but every week or so he gets really weird and I mean weird so he does his best to get out and has done so three times before this. The first time he was gone for a day and we caught him in the yard and the second he was gone for like three days and we caught him in the yard again but the last time he was gone for four days and just came back on his own up to the porch while we were sitting there. He has been gone for a week now and we leave food out for him and something sure is eating it but I'm afraid something has happened to him or when he comes home he doesn't stay because we aren't outside like he has no way in so he leaves. It's getting cold and snowy so it worries me even more because shouldn't he want to come home to get out of the cold? What should we do?

Answer
I'd find a place to put a covered box with a doorway and pet bed, or old blanket, in it. This will give the cat a place to be where it can be warm, and near you. place the food and water dish nearby, and hope for the best. One never knows what to expect, and the only way to be sure whats eating the food is a security camera on the area, with tapes to review.

WOW bad avice

You can take your advice from people who Google or a security professional who specializes in CCTV.

Peter Brissette: there is nothing new about the products on your website in fact there are many misleading statements. many offer 3G and IE connection.

On your website you claim:
4GB Micro SD Card for video storage (7 to 10 days)

Truth: a high resolution camera with the smallest file size will use over 15GB-30GB a day (with 40% motion) a 4GB card will give you hours not days.

There is nothing new about the products you offer they are lower then the average product out there.
There good for nany cameras but not for a security system.

the products you sell (except for PTZ) only fixed cameras which will almost never work as you cant adjust the view.

there is nothing bad about your products but they are not high end please don't claim them to be.
They should mainly be used for nany cameras not for people who are interested in security (I don't think you even have watermark so images wont hold up in court though cant confirm as your website has very little information and even less specs.)

Hello sorry about that

You don't want to record 24 hours a day you want to record on motion so if there is no moment you don't records this will increase your storage a and decrease the amount of video you need to look for.

Very few cameras offer true day night performance mainly companies claim but rarely deliver.

For night operation you need IR cameras or very good lighting I suggest the latter.

You want to stick with a brand for day night cameras such as Bosch, Ascendent, Pelco and honeywell

A good outdoor Camera will have

High resolution (520TVL or higher)
Good signal to noise ratio (S/N 49DB or 50DB)
A true Sony CCD (not Chinese knockoff)
Rugged enclosure to handle vandals and environments
At least IP 66 and a suitable temperature rating for you region
IR LED's to see in pitch dark: active IR rating not projected IR as projected IR has no coloration with how far the camera can see.
2 or 3 different sized LED;s 1 size LED one type of illumination means you either wont get distance or wide angle and you want both.

I would go with the VIS-56IR-2910
http://dealer.ascendentgroup.com//dvr-irâ¦

this camera will give you 110 feet of clear vision in complete darkness and great images by day its the on I recommend for budget customer who need outdoor IR camera.

Cameras that have high resolution, and great signal to noise ratio can reducing file size on DVR's up to 50% and offer better images.

here is a write up I did on CCTV a while ago hope it helps

Not all DVRs are created equal, in fact there are many options that offer varying performance much like the automobile industry. In the world of DVRs you can find the equivalent of a $10,000 Kia and a $350,000 Ferrari and everything in between. Both have 4 wheels and windshield but that where the similarities end, itâs under the hood that counts. Just like any other consumer electronic in the end you get what you pay for.

I suggest you buy a PC based DVR has they have more processing power and normally have a much smaller file size and offer more features then Standalone DVR's. I know many people buy a cheap standalone DVR, only to upgrade to a PC based in 6 months especially when they are using it to manage a store remotely. Also PC based allows you to record up to 64 cameras where a standalone will have a limit of 16.

Many people have the misconception that a PC-Based DVR is simply an off-the-shelf PC with video capture (encoder) cards, display (decoder) cards and some generic OEM software. A true DVR requires years of research and development to facilitate the seamless integration of both the hardware and software. DVRs are highly complex systems that must run 24/7, processing millions of images per day. This makes consumer-level hardware inadequate for DVRs which is why Ascendent uses custom-built PCs with performance-level hardware.

My personal favorite DVR is Ascendent X4 series: Ascendentâs Tri-Fusion Hybrid Platform allows for the creation of a true hybrid surveillance system by utilizing the advantages of Analog, Megapixel, and IP technologies for unparalleled customization and expandability. I am working on government projects and use Ascendent cameras and DVR because the offer superior performance and cost less then comparable brands like bosh, Honeywell and pelco.

The X4 also uses the latest H.

A good security camera system that i can view with my ipad wifi?

William

I need to hook up an outdoor security camera system but one that is also wireless. I would need to view it on my ipad as I am going away on vacation so something that doesnt need recharging would be the best

Answer
Hello

Here is a DVR that will work perfectly for you.

http://www.ascendentgroup.com/x4s.htm

Most DVR's and cameras don't have the ability to view from your i-phone, and you cant just download generic software all DVR's and cameras uses different encryption , software, and compression so you cant use another companies software to view another manufactures DVR.

You want a DVR that has an app specifically designed to work with it like the one I am suggesting below.

What you want is a DVR a DVR converts analog cameras and as well as storing images on site allows you to distribute video over LAN and WAN networks. (internet and network) this way you have both on site storage and recording at your house.

A good Analog DVR will do what you are looking for and not only display them but record them as well they will also allow you to view them over the internet from a Iphone or laptop.

X4S Remote Accessibility
View all your cameras instantly and remotely, and configure the DVR through internet using eitherbusiness in real time from anywhere in the world. MAC or PC platforms (smart phones too). This allows you to manage your

Many people have a misconception that IP has Superior scalability then Analog but with the advancements with DVR's this simply isn't true, you cn do up to 16,000 cameras each camera could even be from a different DVR and a different site.

And when you are using the internet to connect multiple sites together analog transmits over the internet faster with less latency using less bandwidth allowing you not only to view and monitor a situation real time but also effective control PTZ cameras.

What is the Advantage of IP?
Many of the so called advantages of IP simply don't hold water in the real world, IP is mainly Hype and marketing and outside of a few niche applications such as 1 or 2 camera installs, where MP cameras are needed or large scale wireless projects which represent about 2% of the total CCTV market, IP has very few advantages compared to analog based on performance, cost and reliability. (yet all companies touting IP will often use MP cameras to demonstrate the advantages of IP)

IP video is more about marketing then it is about performance as larger companies like Bosch pelco Honeywell axis can change for both hardware and software and once you use there cameras you have to keep using there cameras unlike analog.

Also IP sounds great, plug and play, Better image quality, use existing infrastructure, who wouldnât want that unfortunately this is often not the case.

IP cameras are based on CMOS
Analog cameras are based on CCD (usually)

A CMOS sensor is constructed using a array of pixels, but unlike CCDâs CMOS do not have a capacitor to store the charge for each pixel. The rows of pixels are activated sequentially rather then individually

In short unless you have perfect lighting a good CCD camera will outperform an equivalent CMOS camera.

File Size:
The smaller the files size the more images that are able to be sent and the faster they can be processed improving both FPS and speed. File size is the heart of any DVR and goes far beyond just its streaming capabilities as it also determines the recoding storage time, how much you can back up at once, how fast it renders and searches video.

IP cameras have up to a 5X larger file size then analog cameras. (at same resolution) I have seen MP cameras that on 2MP resolution are over 300X (%3000) larger then our X3 DVR on a CIF image. This is an extreme case but generally speaking IP cameras have a much larger file size.

Most routers and switches are not designed to handle IP cameras they have enough bandwidth but they are not able to process the amounts of commands. (9 IP cameras 30FP is 230 instructions per second) standard routers have enough bandwidth (up to 1GB) but cant handle the amount of tasks (instructions) so frames get dropped latency is introduced and the effectiveness of other devices such as POS, printers and dats storage can be affected and compromised.

Donât get me wrong there are some brutal analog cameras and DVR out there but If you see a good D1 resolution image such as Ascendents Hardware compressed you will not be so quick to join the IP bandwagon.

IP is a young and emerging technology and I have no doubt that in the future it will outperform analog cameras but its not a mature technology yet. Once we start to get standard IP platforms, get rid of license feesâ and existing networks have larger bandwidths then IP video will be a good solution, but until then analog is the way to go.

Make sure you get good cameras as well, Ascendent has the best IR outdoor cameras on the market and are about %50 less then Bosch while offering triple the distance.

How does FBI track the counterfeit money if it used to buy drug?

best security camera ever image

Ben Dean

Let say whoever make fake money can be busted by stores because of security camera and also store use marker to prove them real.

Let say if person make fake money to buy drugs only, then how does FBI track them? The drug dealers may use that money from buyer to pay for another drugs and pay wages to employees who manufacturing the illegal drug. It would be impossible for FBI to trace on whoever print those counterfeit money because he use it only to buy drugs on street not at any store or banks.

Answer
As no one would ever reveal where they got it, and no drug dealer would turn on a buyer who screwed him, even as part of a deal, it is a foolproof plan. BTW, counterfeiting is handled by the secret service, not the FBI.

What is a good home security camera system?

Cline

I am looking for an home security camera sytem that I could link with my tv on it's own channel.

Any suggestions?

Answer
You can do this a couple of different ways:

Method 1) Wireless cameras, transmitting to a Receiver. From the receiver run the signal into a modulator, which will output the video as an actual TV channel. You'd need to add the signal onto your video network using a splitter/combiner.

Method 2) Wireless cameras and receiver, and connect the output from the receiver to an unused video input on your TV. View the cameras by selecting the correct input using your TV remote. This is cheaper and simpler than Method 1.

Keep in mind that the first method using modulation can have problems. The quality of the pictures may be poor, due to interference from nearby channels on your TV network.

The second method is almost foolproof, since you're using the "raw" signal straight out of the receiver.

Good luck!

Which 8 camera surveillance system is better?

Greg

I am planning on buying a 8 camera surveillance system for my
home and was wondering with of these is a better system and why:
Swann, NightOwl, Qsee or Lorex.

Answer
I haven't seen any of the brands you mention,
but I know that many security camera systems
that are sold under a lot of different names
are actually exactly the same junky equipment,
sometimes with only slight cosmetic differences.

You could probably waste your money on any of them to equal effect.

I want to have 4 security cameras installed in a store but am not sure how much to pay someone to do it does anyone know what a decent amount to pay is? Its a 4 camera system that is wired and a computer that needs to be installed and setup any prices will be helpful. Thanks,
Well thanks for the thorough answer but what I meant was how much is a decent amount to pay for the installation of a four camera wired system? I already have the cameras I just want them installed but dont want to low ball the person he is charging me $250 right now but i told him i was shopping around still i think hell do it for $200?

Answer
With camera and survelience systems, you get what you pay for. Generally, the more you pay, the better features you get, and the more reliability. I would expect to pay at least $3k for a basic system. Here are some pointers:

1. Unless you just want the cameras for show, don't go with an off the shelf system like you can get at Costco or Sam's Club.

2. Don't do business with any company that hasn't been selling/installing cameras for at least four years. Ask for references.

3. Don't buy a Windows based camera system. Get one that is optimized for Camera usage. Many camera systems these days are based on custom implementations of Linux - a far better solution than Windows.

4. Don't cheap out on camera's. Good cameras + good recorder = better results. A camera system won't do you any good if you can't identify the people/cars/etc that your trying to record.

5. Buy a system that can handle at least 4 camera's more than you need right now. It is easier and less expensive in the long run to grow a system by just adding camera's than it is to replace the recorder.

6. Don't pay for your system and installation all at once. Have your purchase and installation contract broken down into stages - something like 25% deposit with order, 25% on delivery, 25% on installation and 25% due within 30 days of commissioning. Otherwise you could run into a situation where the camera company closes it's doors, or runs off with your money. I've seen this happen more than once.

I spent four years with a company that sold camera's and recording equipment as a side line. We were rather expensive compared to some of our competitors, because our main focus was another product line. However, on more than one occasion, people who went with the lowest bid often ended up coming to us for help upgrading or replacing their systems because of their good experiences with our other equipment. I saw more than one customer have the camera guy do a partial installation, then take off with the rest of the money, leaving the customer with no camera system. I also saw several customers get disgusted with their Windows based systems and either replace them entirely, or just stop using them at all.

Addressing your clarification: in my mind, $250 for installing the cameras is not only reasonable, it's extremely cheap. Most installers I'm aware of charge an average of between $50 and $125 an hour (depending upon your area). Depending upon the layout of the cameras and construction details of your building, I would figure an hour or two per camera, plus an hour or two to set up the recorder. My old company would have charged a minimum of $500 for the install, our typical install fee was $1500. Remember that iinstalling the cameras is more than just running the wires and mounting the cameras. It is also making sure they're pointed in the right directions, focused well, etc. Good luck.

How to control a web camera with a pic and save pictures on memory?

Q. Hi, I just want to know if somebody know how to control a web camera with a pic, saving the pictures on an external memory, if somebody has an idea of how to do it, would be wonderful. I promise to publish all layout and information to get this project done. The idea is to design this system focused on car security, I want that once the silence alarm is active, the camera starts to take pictures from inside and outside the car, and of course, the idea is make it easy (publishing code) for that everyone can do it.
Thanks and hope for your help.

Answer
A PIC sounds underpowered for this. You might be better off with a small 80x86 or ARM board running Linux.

Be sure to choose a webcam with proper Linux support. This is especially important if using an ARM processor. Some manufacturers provide only a binary blob driver for 80x86, but you will need the Source Code to recompile for ARM.

I would like to use my pc camera for a security camera of sorts while I'm on vacation. Maybe tak a picture every so often. (Motion sensor would be nice but I don't want to buy one.) Is there a way to set it to take a picture every hour or so?

Answer
If the PC will be left on, you'd have to hide it very well; otherwise it will be the first thing in the bag.

Webcam Timershot is a Microsoft XP PowerToy, that lets you take pictures at specified time intervals from a Webcam connected to your computer and save them to a location that you designate. This one would require a big hard drive.
OR-
Secure Cam is a motion detecting web cam surveillance software that can automatically capture a series of images whenever motion is detected in the monitored area. You can adjust the detection sensitivity, automatically archive captured still images and playback the images in sequence with the supplied viewer application. Secure Cam can monitor and display up to 99 cameras...etc.
Both freeware. Both here:

Can the camera on a MacBook Pro be hacked?

best wifi security camera mac on apple-mac-os-x-snow-leopard.jpg
best wifi security camera mac image

FK

I'm thinking of getting one and I have never had a computer with a built in camera (and haven't had a web cam since 2003) but I'm nervous about hackers getting into the camera because I'm always connected to my WiFi and sometimes just leave my computer open.

I'm just wondering how good is their security.

Also don't just say "duct tape" that is not the answer to my question and the camera is where the sensor is for the keyboard light.

Answer
Can anything be hacked is the question, and the answer is yes. If someone is smart enough to make something that's secured, someone else is smart enough to hack that security.

So yes, anything can be 'hacked'

If I wanted to hack your webcam, I could get your IP address and use any number of security vulnerabilities to gain entry to your system, or I could brute force into your wireless connection, once in there I could install a remote viewer for your computer giving me full control of the system. I could also send you a bug in your email that once opened will allow me to remote view your desktop and transmit that data anywhere.

Very straight forward. Mind you, if someone was smart enough to do that, I doubt they'd waste their time staring at you wandering around your room. They'd be too busy stealing money or credit card information or any other number of things.

People are always saying "Mac's are secured, you don't get viruses for Macs, you can't break them!". Companies actually pay me to find my way into secure areas of their servers to find network vulnerabilities. They've all got Linux based servers which are largely superior than any Unix based MacOS. Basically, if it was impossible to break into a Mac, no one would ever buy a PC. Every computer at the bank, your financial advisor, the local stores that take your credit cards, etc, etc, etc... Would all be running Mac's, but almost none of them are.

But yes, if you're REALLY paranoid, then tape is your answer. :p

UPDATE: Obviously the person who said I'm "Full of it" has no clue what they're talking about. Vulnerabilities for EVERY OS (Windows, MacOS, Linux) are discovered almost every single day. There is no such thing as a fully secured system. If it was, then there wouldn't be patches because it would already be perfect.

Right now MacOS's #1 vulnerability comes from Memory Overflow issues... As late as May and June 2009, people have been using Memory Overflows to get into MacOS systems... Chances are you're running 10.5 Leopard and these issues aren't even being addressed until the 10.6 version is being released.

If you believe what that other guy says and that mac's can't be hacked go to Google and type "How to Hack a Mac" and see the 23 million+ search results.

How do I start a new iPad without installing iTunes or sync'ing with a PC?

Rob

I just got an iPad for free (wouldn't have bought one with all the limitations), and the screen is stuck on asking to install itunes and sync. with my computer. I do NOT want to install any iTunes or iCrap on my computer. How do I bypass this ?
Also, I don't need any updates at this point. I just want to use it right away like I didn't have another computer around.

Answer
you're out of luck. my brother-in-law works at Apple, and even at Apple they don't allow staff to talk about bugs, issues and customer complaints about the ipad. I've seen people online taking it to the apple store to activate it.

anyway, you might want to read reviews about it, and decide if it makes sense to keep it or return it. my husband got one for me a few months ago, and we returned it (with a restocking fee) because it was more like a toy for kids who never had a real computer. it is more for browsing certain sites, but not youtube or others with Flash unless you accept their "sterilized" apps from their store. I spite of great marketing hype, here are a few things that you should know about the ipad:

- you cannot print anything from it. period. not even your e-ticket confirmation. plain dumb !
- no real multitasking, even their "fix" is not a real multitasking, but good enough for the masses
- you cannot watch Flash-enabled sites. this includes numerous e-learning sites and most video and games on the Internet.
- problematic WiFi support. Apple did it again, even with their wireless access point. Don't expect to use that in a hotel with WiFi. At least 2/3 don't work with there!
- impossible to synchronize to a PC that does not have an Intel chip. good luck on that one, since you MUST at least synchronize it once, as you just noticed ! ;-)

and now the obvious that you might have overlooked:
- no camera,
- no USB ports,
- no easy way to organize a file system and transfer/copy,
- no easy way to print your files, no interaction with office productivity software (Office),
- on-screen keyboard is not practical, if you need to type a bit, use a REAL laptop
- screen resolution is 4:3 so you see movies with huge black bars,
- there is no HDMI out so you can't connect it to your new LCD,
- no SD or other card readers for your photos,
- screen is glossy so you can't read on it outdoors,
- ridiculously low storage space (even netbooks have over 200gb now)
- very fragile and slippery in your hands (one drop could kill the screen)
- much pricier than alternative tablets like Archos with way more features and openness
- you cannot change the browser for a better one. remember Apple is a closed system
- expensive data plans if you use 3G
- no support for email attachments. feels like back in the 1990's.
- to watch movies from your PC, you have to download a video converter, or buy them from iTunes
- Air Video (which enables you to watch videos you have loaded into iTunes) only works with a few routers, and notably not with any AT&T Routers at all
- no tethering to anything
- no common laptop/netboook features: security software, voice recorder, or calculator
- extraordinarily fragile device, do not drop it on your carpet, it WILL break.
- heavier than you think. You won't be able to hold it in your hand for long.
- cannot rest flat on a table or your lap, you will block the WiFi antenna behind the Apple logo and weaken your WiFi signal.

And finally, to do anything you need on the iPad, you still need to connect it regularly to a PC or a Mac. You have to connect in order to sync up your latest podcasts and media files. You need to sync to get OS updates. You need to sync in order to get your latest business documents on the iPad.

Now you can make your own informed decision about keeping that iPad or not... Good luck!

A security camera in an office building has 1000 x 1000 pixels. Each pixel shows a grayscale intensity of 1024 levels. The camera takes one image per second. The building has 15 identical cameras with the same specification as described above.

Answer
If this were âreal worldâ then more information would be needed. How efficiently is the data encoded? Is the data compressed? Are any parity bits used?

Assuming that the encoding is 100% efficient (no waisted bits, no parity) and there is no compression:
Each pixel would take 10 bits for 1024 greyscale.
Each picture would have 1000x1000 = 1,000,000 pixels.
With 15 cameras each taking 1 picture per second, there is 15 pictures per second.

That is 15 x 1,000,000 x 10 = 150,000,000 bits of information per second
Which is 18,750,000 bytes of information per second in a perfect world. (8 bits per byte)
If you want true megabytes, then divide this by 1,048,576 bytes per megabyte.

In the real world, parity would likely be used, and compression would also likely be used. So the data rate could actually be lower.
