Is it advisable to have several fake video security camera along with some real ones?

I need ans

I'm planning on getting two indoor wireless security camera and one outdoor one.

Will it be advisable to put up some fake security cameras as well?

I live in a safe neighborhood and never had any problems the past 10 years, but better to be safe than sorry.

Can you give me any tips about both real wireless security camera and fake ones?

It's just to keep the opportunistic burglars at "bay". I know nothing will keep out hardened criminals if they want to rob and kill me.

Thanks.

Answer
Definitely advisable. Also you should get a few signs saying that you have camera's in the area. The police might be able to help you with that.

What is a good security camera setup for me?

i am having trouble with things missing, and today i had my chrome wheel fall off while im driving because someone tried to steal it luckily the rear tire didnt come loose and chevrolet they tampered with the rear too,but my motrcycle and truck are 10 15 feet away from my upstairs window, i have a computer, and a high def tv,what type of security camera would be good for evidense and protection???

Answer
You can't watch the cameras or monitor(s) 24/7.

If you get a camera or two or four and connect them to a multichannel security DVR (with a hard drive), you can set up motion triggers for all sorts of stuff...

You didn't tell us what computer, so it would be possible to use that, but video or stills over time will use lots of space, so if you decide to use the computer, then an external drive for the surveillance photos or video is suggested.

You can look at the low-end at x10.com or you can do consumer grade video surveillance from a number of sources. I like Frys. Go to their web site - on the tabs under "Electronic Components" select "Security" then "Closed Circuit Television"... and CCTV kits, Recorders, Wired and Wireless cameras...

What is your budget? Does the camera need night vision?

Good luck...

What's the best budget wireless security system for a small shop?

joseph

I have a small 1100 sqft facility in which I do auto repair and have tools and valuables which I want to protect.

I'm not looking for a monthly subscription type!!!!!

I need a DIY security system. A keypad, one motion sensor, 2 door sensors and possibly a system that can alert me when there is trouble. I don't have a land line for my shop phone because I use my cell. I have seen systems that can message or call you without a phone line.

A bonus would also to have a camera of some sort. Maybe ir or night vision.

Answer
There are places that offer DIY systems that can be installed. I have linked to an Access Control package and a standalone DVR security camera system that includes everything you need to install the equipment. The best thing is that ApexCCTV.com also offers free lifetime support for the products so if you need help installing it you can call them up. The best part is that neither package has a monthly fee. You monitor your own shop at any time via an internet browser or smartphone app.

You are correct in that most security camera systems can alert your smartphone but the system has to be attached to the internet to do so. This may be an issue in your shop if you don't have an internet line you can run to the Security DVR. This is the same issue with a wireless system. They must be connected to a network in order to work so you must have a wireless network already installed for the Wi-Fi cameras to work. Wireless is also way more expensive whereas a wired system doesn't need a network installed in order to work (unless you want to view the video remotely from your phone or internet).

If you have any more questions don't hesitate to send me a PM.

How does live monitoring from security camera's work?

Metal

We need a security camera for our home. When away, how does live monerting work through your iPhone or Android ? We live our little dog alone all day and would like to be able to check on him by this security camera too. Do you have to have a internet hookup, or phone hook up, how does it work to be able to broadcast that video to your iPhone or Droid?

Answer
Hi "Metal":

The most important thing to have, when setting up an internet-based camera (called an IP camera), is to have a good broadband (non-dialup, always on) internet connection at your house. It doesn't have to be high-speed cable modem (from your cable company) or fiber-optic (like Verizon FiOS or ATT U-verse), but at least a DSL-line from your phone company.

The IP cameras (or even a webcam connected to one of your computers) need to be connected to a home "network" or LAN (Local Area Network) via either WiFi --for wireless cams-- or using regular Ethernet (Cat5 or Cat6) cables to an internet router. If you just plan on having one camera connected to your PC, then you could use the computer as the "router", but routers are cheap ($20-$40 if you shop wisely) and simple to set up.

Your iPhone or Android device would simply use a web browser to log onto your home network, using an IP address & password, and you would watch your camera just like watching a YouTube feed, except that it would be "live".

Here's a YouTube demo of this using an iPhone, by a good security camera company: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PnP_Dbqn1Cw&feature=related

There are plenty of other YouTube demos and tutorials, if you search around. I added a link to Swann cameras' website tutorials (they're the largest seller of DIY security systems) in my Sources below, as another good information resource.

hope this helps,

what is a good home security system?

I am shopping around for a good home security system that isn't super expensive and works wirelessly as we do not have a landline. So far, all of the reviews I have read for the top two companies (ADT and Protect America) sound like horror stories of fraud and faulty equipment. I just don't want to get ripped off!

Answer
Good system is taking a good look at your residence
1. windows locked. Can they be
2. Are there good locks on the doors (make sure all keys are accounted for, if not,
NO EXCEPTIONS.replace the locks)
3. lights outside the doors (a well lit place at night is not a place robbers will hit first)
4. make sure there are no windows that are not easily seen (prevents people form getting in without being seen)
5. Know the people allowed in your home (robbers taking a chance at a good house to rob or were they informed)
6. take a good look at your neighbors. Make sure you take a moment to know them. They are the ones near your residence. It is always wise to at least have a good presences of who they are

and a few other suggestions
Make sure you are insured. It is not that expensive...and if anything is stolen. It will be worth it

i do not know the name of it but there are plenty of websites that will help you set up different
live cameras form your house (Inside and out). you can go on line and with a pass word you can check your home thru the cameras you set up. (Not to mention nothing is better for the police then a video of the crime)

good luck with it :)

good security camera system for home?

vs2009

I have a budget of max $300 for a good security camera system to monitor my backyard and front of the house, any suggestions?

Answer
You may have trouble finding a reliable and working camera system for only $300. I might suggest saving up a little more to add to your budget if at all possible. Good wireless cameras are going to run $180-$400+ for each camera. The ones you can buy at Wal-Mart or whatever don't work very well and are more trouble than they're worth.

You should check out either SafeMart or Home Security Store. Home Security Store is more like a "home depot" for alarm system equipment.

Here's a good article on camera systems and a link to a review of SafeMart. Hope this helps.

I'm looking for a indoor only "security" camera system that's wireless.

Can you recommend any good ones?

It's mainly to keep an eye on my elderly mom. Just in case she falls or something.

Oh, it also needs to be viewable on a computers at home and away.

Thanks

Wireless camera systems are convieniant but they're not secure, anyone could watch your mom. Wired systems are much better.

How much would it cost to set up Home Security Camera system?

ferretkiss

I would like to put some security cameras around the outside of the house, because of trouble with the neighbors. I would like to view what the cameras see, later. I think I would need at least three cameras, one on the car in the street, one on the front porch area, and one on the back yard area. Or maybe two in the front.

What is the best way to do this?

About how much would it cost?

Answer
It depends what you want to do with the video.

An inexpensive consumer 4-channel surveillance DVR is about $300.
Add in a 500 gig hard drive for about $70 (records the video).
4 cameras - Average $100 each for outdoor rated, night vision, so $400... budget around $1,000 for a low-end, multi-camera, system.

The expensive part is the labor. Are you planning to install it yourself? How will the camera's wires get from the camera to the DVR? Thinking "wireless" cameras? They still need electricity - so is there power where you want to install the cameras?

Actually, "wireless" security cameras use more wires than wired ones... The camera needs power (1 wire) and transmits video wirelessly to a base station. The base station needs power and a wire to the DVR. Total = 3 "wires". A wired camera has one long "combo" cable that carries video and power.

How do you want to monitor that video? The DVR has a video-out connection that can connect to any TV with a working, available, composite (yellow RCA jack) plug. More expensive DVRs can be added to a computer network...

Frys (and Frysdotcom) has a good selection of security and surveillance stuff...

I am moving into an apartment complex and need to put a camera up to watch my motorcycle when I am gone and am sleeping. It needs to have infrared vision for nighttime surveillance and about 100-200 feet range of a wifi connection.

Not many options available that I was able to find but I did find one that is technically a mini DVR that is capable of recording video or taking pictures when motion is detected. This way you don't have to worry about the Wi-Fi distance limitation.

security camera - glare from the window from the nightvision/IR?

romantikni

Hi, i have a security camera that has night vision / IR lights, it is pointed out the window. I have a glare from the IR on the window. During daylight the picture quality is clear , but as soon as it goes nighttime i can't see out the window because of the glare.

So my question is - how can i stop the glare? so i can use the nightvision out the window.

Answer
The problem is the same as that with normal light. During the day it is hard to see inside houses because the light source is reflect back off the glass. However it is easy to see out of the house because the light source is outside. At night it is easy to see into a house with the lights on, but hard to see out. Again, the light will reflect off the glass on the side of the light source.

To solve your issue, you need to block the IR source inside the window and provide an IR source outside the window. The camera itself can stay inside.

It's possible. But having a security camera running 24/7 with video and audio takes mass amounts of storage since the data isn't compressed.

It's more likely someone tells your boss what is going down.

It is a condo office and someone has been smearing butter and throwing eggs at the mail boxex and office front door. Needing a security camera with out flash and wont be noticeable to the suspect the office is about 200 feet from my condo unit. I am also security for the condo, this happens at diffrent times of the day and night

Answer
You need to fit a low light camera fairly close to the office. Then a cable to your location, or into the office where it can be recorded by a security video recorder, a computer with a cctv card or a dedicated cctv camera server. Unless you are experienced in this you can waste a LOT of money for no results.

I wanted to do this last summer, when we had a drug dealer doing deals right outside my kitchen window. Luckily he is gone now. But I would still like to place security camera around my apartment to record any other illegal acts, such as vandalism. My main concern is invading the privacy of someone that is not doing anything wrong. My landlord already has the main entrances to our building covered, but I would like to watch out for the common areas, such as wehre the drug deals took place.
I live in Upstate NY.

Answer
The best suggestion is to contact the local police. Reason being, they are the ones who would end up getting the video.
One major thing you do need to consider is the quality of the recorded images. Camera's are not like the human eye, they do have weaknesses, particularly the discount spy store or hardware store variety. I have a video surveillance section on my website at http://www.keepsafesystems.ca Feel free to check it out as it does have quite abit of techincal info on how camera's and recorders work. After all, if the images are crap and the crackhead gets away, you just wasted your money on camera's.

Back to the legality issue. Human rights groups are constantly bickering about public video surveillance. In fact, a town around here wanted to have camera's installed in high crime area's and was refused. However, traffic camera's are allowed and are everywhere... difference being the recording. If you have a sign which states "your images are being recorded and will be used in criminal prosecution." Of course, like I said, talk to your local police or look for privacy commissioner in your area. Another thought would be, there should be nothing stopping you from having a camera recording activity in your appartment... maybe looking at a window. nudge nudge wink wink

What electrical wire to use for 12V outdoor security cameras?

BGAndrea

Hello,
I am going to be installing security cameras at my business. The video is sent wirelessly to the receiver, but each camera needs to be wired for power. All it says on the website is 12V power. What wire do I run for this? Here is a link to the exact system if that helps: http://sylvaniastore.lorextechnology.com/product.aspx?id=2138#

Also, what end tips, transfomers, etc do I need in order to plug it into an outlet or hard wire?

Thanks!

Answer
The transformer comes with the DVR and cameras. There will be some cable with it to power the DVR. The cameras are wireless so you don't need to worry about wiring them. Should be a simple setup and nice system.

I heard the nexus 7 was good but is the kindle better???????????????????

Answer
Google Nexus 7:

Manufactured by Asus to Google's specifications, the Nexus 7 ushers in a new era of affordable, quality Android tablets.
Packing a Tegra 3 quad-core processor, 12 core GPU, 8GB and 16GB internal storage and 7-inch 1280 x 800 screen, the Nexus 7 certainly has the skills to pay the bills, but at a highly attractive price point.
Laughing in the face of its closest rival, the Amazon Kindle Fire, it looks like Google has got the budget end of the tablet market all wrapped up. Until the Kindle Fire 2 and iPad Mini come to the fore, at least.
It's now been shoved up in capacity without a jump in price; this means you can get 16GB of storage for £159 and £199 for the full 32GB version - plus we're getting a 3G version too.

Google Nexus 10: a bit above your budget but sick tablet

The 10.1 display is one of the biggest talking points on the Google Nexus 10. At 300 pixels per inch it's the highest resolution tablet display on the planet - take that, Apple and your Retina displays.
It's a great performer too. Other than taking a while to process panoramic photos we never felt like it was struggling to keep up. It's fast and smooth whatever you throw at it.
Sure it may not be as stunning to look at, or as well built as an iPad, and the lack of expandable memory will irk some, but overall the Nexus 10 gives you a quality, big-screen Android experience which is not to be sniffed at.
On top of that, the tablet has already been updated to Android 4.2.1, which brings back the month of December in some calendar apps (well done, Google) and adds support for some security issues too, showing this is the tablet to buy if you want a larger screen that Google won't give up on.

Amazon Kindle fire HD

What's better than a modern tablet with a quad core processor? One that costs just £159. That's right: the power of the Kindle brand has mated with an HD screen and won't charge you the earth to own it.
Coming in at 16GB and 32GB flavours, the Kindle Fire HD is sure to be a big hit, bringing the simplicity of the e-book range to the tablet arena, with dedicated space to access your movies, games, apps and music too. A recent update has added a camera app for the front-facing camera and Swype support, so there are even more (admittedly tiny) reasons to shell out.
It's a little simplistic for some, but for others it's the perfect mix of curated content and easy to use interface - and despite the price, it's got a decent build quality too.

Toshiba AT200
The AT200 is extremely thin, clocking in at a super slender 7.7mm thin, which means you can slide it into your bag without issue - and at 535g, you probably won't notice it's in there.
You get a 10.1-inch 1280 x 800 TFT display, 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, 5MP rear camera, 2MP front camera and a decent array of ports including microSD, USB and HDMI.
Toshiba has also dropped the price of the AT200 just a few months after launch to keep it competitive in the market, but it's exclusively at Carphone Warehouse in the UK for the time being.

Why are fewer people using Iphones now?

TOOTAl2

Seems like everyone has a samsung phone now. few years ago everyone i know had a iphone now only 2 people i know have them.

Answer
Fewer? Not so. The iPhone 5 is the best selling smartphone today. Many of my friends & relatives have converted from Androids & BlackBerrys to iPhones & loving it.

---

@O: Because Androids are eating Apple's lunch. The Galaxy S3 in particular took the iPhone's crown as the best of 2012, the King of Smartphones, and best-selling smartphone.
Uh no. The iPhone 5 was the best selling phone in the last quarter of 2012. Hell even the iPhone 4S outsold the Galaxy S III, just like back in the day when the iPhone 4 outsold the Galaxy S II & the 4S was the best selling phone. The iPhone 5 is still the best selling phone today.

iPhones are simple devices and not very versatile. You do need to be more tech-savvy with Androids but once you master them the sky is the limit.
Uh not really. iOS is easier to use & more versatile. Essentially the same OS for the iPod touch, iPad, iPad mini, iPhone which is used in many avenues, & more than their traditional use/means.

The best feeling is when I put my Samsung Galaxy S3 on the table and my iPhone-toting friends hide their iPhones. They haven't won a single challenge so far.
Well as I said, it won best selling, better made, better OS, better camera, better battery life, better virtual assistant, better security, better performing, better app selection, better media selection, etc.

The S4, on sale in April, will once and for all bring the iPhone to its knees (as if the S3 didn't already).
Again not really. Sure the S4 would sell well, mostly based on its gimmicky features (the launch presentation definitely would not have helped that cause) but eventually the next iPhone will come & reduce the GS4 as the 3rd option, behind that iPhone & the iPhone 5, much like what has happened in the last 2 years.

Answer
Hello

Here is a DVR that will work perfectly for you.

http://www.ascendentgroup.com/x4s.htm

Most DVR's and cameras don't have the ability to view from your i-phone, and you cant just download generic software all DVR's and cameras uses different encryption , software, and compression so you cant use another companies software to view another manufactures DVR.

You want a DVR that has an app specifically designed to work with it like the one I am suggesting below.

What you want is a DVR a DVR converts analog cameras and as well as storing images on site allows you to distribute video over LAN and WAN networks. (internet and network) this way you have both on site storage and recording at your house.

A good Analog DVR will do what you are looking for and not only display them but record them as well they will also allow you to view them over the internet from a Iphone or laptop.

X4S Remote Accessibility
View all your cameras instantly and remotely, and configure the DVR through internet using eitherbusiness in real time from anywhere in the world. MAC or PC platforms (smart phones too). This allows you to manage your

Many people have a misconception that IP has Superior scalability then Analog but with the advancements with DVR's this simply isn't true, you cn do up to 16,000 cameras each camera could even be from a different DVR and a different site.

And when you are using the internet to connect multiple sites together analog transmits over the internet faster with less latency using less bandwidth allowing you not only to view and monitor a situation real time but also effective control PTZ cameras.

What is the Advantage of IP?
Many of the so called advantages of IP simply don't hold water in the real world, IP is mainly Hype and marketing and outside of a few niche applications such as 1 or 2 camera installs, where MP cameras are needed or large scale wireless projects which represent about 2% of the total CCTV market, IP has very few advantages compared to analog based on performance, cost and reliability. (yet all companies touting IP will often use MP cameras to demonstrate the advantages of IP)

IP video is more about marketing then it is about performance as larger companies like Bosch pelco Honeywell axis can change for both hardware and software and once you use there cameras you have to keep using there cameras unlike analog.

Also IP sounds great, plug and play, Better image quality, use existing infrastructure, who wouldnât want that unfortunately this is often not the case.

IP cameras are based on CMOS
Analog cameras are based on CCD (usually)

A CMOS sensor is constructed using a array of pixels, but unlike CCDâs CMOS do not have a capacitor to store the charge for each pixel. The rows of pixels are activated sequentially rather then individually

In short unless you have perfect lighting a good CCD camera will outperform an equivalent CMOS camera.

File Size:
The smaller the files size the more images that are able to be sent and the faster they can be processed improving both FPS and speed. File size is the heart of any DVR and goes far beyond just its streaming capabilities as it also determines the recoding storage time, how much you can back up at once, how fast it renders and searches video.

IP cameras have up to a 5X larger file size then analog cameras. (at same resolution) I have seen MP cameras that on 2MP resolution are over 300X (%3000) larger then our X3 DVR on a CIF image. This is an extreme case but generally speaking IP cameras have a much larger file size.

Most routers and switches are not designed to handle IP cameras they have enough bandwidth but they are not able to process the amounts of commands. (9 IP cameras 30FP is 230 instructions per second) standard routers have enough bandwidth (up to 1GB) but cant handle the amount of tasks (instructions) so frames get dropped latency is introduced and the effectiveness of other devices such as POS, printers and dats storage can be affected and compromised.

Donât get me wrong there are some brutal analog cameras and DVR out there but If you see a good D1 resolution image such as Ascendents Hardware compressed you will not be so quick to join the IP bandwagon.

IP is a young and emerging technology and I have no doubt that in the future it will outperform analog cameras but its not a mature technology yet. Once we start to get standard IP platforms, get rid of license feesâ and existing networks have larger bandwidths then IP video will be a good solution, but until then analog is the way to go.

Make sure you get good cameras as well, Ascendent has the best IR outdoor cameras on the market and are about %50 less then Bosch while offering triple the distance.

What program can allow me to view my cameras from another location?

420SMOKER

I recently bought 4 new webcams, I also bought extended USB cords and therefore put the webcams up all around my house and started using them as security cameras. They work pretty well but i can only view my cameras on 1 computer, is there any program where i can view my cameras at work? or on another laptop at my house? thanks

Answer
Hello

What you want is a DVR a DVR converts analog cameras and as well as storing images on site allows you to distribute video over LAN and WAN networks. (internet and network) this way you have both on site storage and recording at your house.

Here is a DVR that will work perfectly for you.

http://www.ascendentgroup.com/x4s.htm

Just about any Analog DVR will do what you are looking for and not only display them but record them as well they will also allow you to view them over the internet from a Iphone or laptop.

IP is like wireless (in theory its perfect) if that was true there would be no wired cameras or analog cameras it would all be wireless IP.

This means CMOS has some significant disadvantages compared to CCD, this means CMOS
have inferior ability to cope with ambient lighting such as back light, bright, deep shadows contrasts, low light and IR this is also known as the real word.

(Ascendents X3 DVR achieves file sizes as low as .3KB on normal image quality on a CIF image no IP camera on the market will come close to this) The file size of a DVR impacts the performance of the DVR in just about every aspect from speed to longevity and is often the most import spec of any DVR.

What type of commercial surveillance system does Barnes and Noble use?

best value security camera system image

Mike Malon

I understand that not every store is going to have the same exact system, but I'd like to know at least a general assessment of Barnes and Noble's video surveillance. This is for an art project...not recon for a heist...

Answer
My local BN uses a few layers of surveillance.
1) employees are encouraged to be seen and speak to every customer;
2) security staff mingle in plain clothes
3) HD color ceiling cameras cover at least 90% ( probably 100%) of floor space - live monitor with pan/tilt/zoom & simultaneous DVR capture, some open- some hidden behind mirrors or false fixtures..
4) high-value items like CD/DVDs and Readers are kept in 'corral' areas with separate registers and RF tags that trigger the corral gate alarm,
5) other high-value items like Computer software or language study packs are kept behind the register - with cameras watching them, or in locked cases requiring a keycode and an employee ID card to access.

They also employ pattern-recognition to examine if cashiers are passing items for the incorrect price ( high or low).. and the front doors can be triggered as a 'man-trap' to isolate criminals from other folks until police arrive.
.. and that's just the things I could see when I did my security internship and had to recon 5 places. The brands are all mixed, depending on what is available OTS (off the shelf), and when the store was opened or retro-fitted.

In addition to patron areas where the public has access, there is a video record kept of all cash register journals so it can be displayed side-by-side with video of the transaction; and stock rooms and trash areas are also watched by the same HD Video systems. Inventory is checked frequently, and they pull the tapes if there are any discrepancies.

how to get a security camera to record all the time?

J

Hello, we have been having issues with someone stealing solar lights out of our front yard. We have bought cameras, and have ran it through a vcr but we have to push record and it don't record 24/7. Now tonight someone came again in spite of a sign that says they are on camera, and we wired the solar lights into the ground, someone came and snapped off 2 of them and of course the camera wasn't on because it don't record 24/7. What is the cheapest way to be able to record all of the time?? Thanks

Answer
Wow, I'm sorry to hear about this issue, must be very frustrating. Hope I can help a bit.

I'm surprised that you're using a VCR to record security footage. I am not even sure where to buy a new VCR.

New security systems of any value record to a DVR or to a hard drive. DVR can be set to record a 24 hour loop. A full week loop may be pushing it for most systems. But surely within 24 hours of the event you can see that your property has been vandalized or stolen, stop the record and have something. The longest most people are unable to see their properly would be the 8-10 hours they are working or sleeping. In the hours between, you'd notice the problem and then could look at the footage.

Also, modern home security cameras can be set to record if they detect motion so you don't have to ever hit "record" or actually even record for the full 24/7 but rather only at times when the cameras see something moving.

There is no VHS in the world that can record for 24 hours a day though. If you want more coverage, you have to move to a digital system that allows for greater compression of the footage and greater storage space. I would imagine that a quick conversation with ANY home security specialist will yield this information and probably the names of recommended systems.

Here's a well-rated system for under $500 that comes with a 500GB drive which can record for 120 days so there are probably cheaper systems that can do a mere 7 days but don't forget that the higher the quality of the video, the more space it requires to be stored and therefore the shorter the overall recording time becomes.

We need to put up a security system at our church building since we have had a lot of incidences recently. However, looking online at surveillance systems there are so many different kind offered that it is confusing and difficult which to choose from. Is there anyone who can help me to pick the best system for my needs? My needs are as follows:

1.Up to 100 ft clear visibility day or night.
2.Outdoor (California)/weather resistant
3.At least one camera that can detect/read license plates
4.Good tradeoff between cost and quality.
5.4 cameras or more.

Answer
You could spend a lot of money trying to configure a custom system. That would ensure that you got the exact system that you want but for simplicity there are packages that are cost effective and come with everything needed to get the system up and running.

I would recommend a standalone package so that way you don't to worry about a PC. The DVR connects to the cameras and you can connect the DVR to a TV or a monitor and even view the video remotely via the web or iPhone/Android smartphone.

How do I set up home security cameras that I can view over the web?

curious

I travel a lot and work away from home a great deal. I would like to set up a security system that I can monitor from the internet. I will need 4 cameras and one will have to have be able to focus on objects 150' away. The other three cameras will have to be able to focus from 0 to 50'. Any information on the set up, cost and availability of the equipment would be appreciated.

Answer
You need an IP camera. They don't even require a computer to be on. Panasonic makes the best with pan/zoom for about $1000. Dlink has some cheapo ones for $100-$200.

Be sure and enable security or the camera will be viewable by anyone on the web. Check out these guys in their living room:

use of Wi-Fi technology?

best home security camera consumer reports on ... Home Security Systems | Home Security Systems Consumer Reports | Home

karthika R

tell me the use of Wi-Fi technology in detail

Answer
Wi-Fi was originally a brand licensed by the Wi-Fi Alliance to describe the embedded technology of wireless local area networks (WLAN) based on the IEEE 802.11 standard. As of 2007, common use of the term Wi-Fi has broadened to describe the generic wireless interface of mobile computing devices, such as laptops in LANs.[citation needed] The term Wi-Fi was chosen as a play on the term "Hi-Fi", and is often thought to be an abbreviation for wireless fidelity. Wi-Fi and the Wi-Fi CERTIFIED logo are registered trademarks of the Wi-Fi Alliance, the trade organization that tests and certifies equipment compliance with the 802.11x standards.

Common uses for Wi-Fi include Internet and VoIP phone access, gaming, and network connectivity for consumer electronics such as televisions, DVD players, and digital cameras. In spite of media reports about possible health risks from Wi-Fi, scientific studies have failed to show a causal effect.
Technical information

Main article: Wi-Fi Technical Information

Wi-Fi networks use radio technologies called IEEE 802.11. These technologies have gone through several generations since their inception in 1997. Wi-Fi is supported to different extents under Microsoft Windows, Apple Computer Mac OS and open source Unix and Linux operating systems.

Uses

A person with a Wi-Fi enabled device such as a PC, cell phone or PDA can connect to the Internet when in proximity of an access point. The region covered by one or several access points is called a hotspot. Hotspots can range from a single room to many square miles of overlapping hotspots. Wi-Fi can also be used to create a mesh network. Both architectures are used in community networks.[citation needed]

Wi-Fi also allows connectivity in peer-to-peer (wireless ad-hoc network) mode, which enables devices to connect directly with each other. This connectivity mode is useful in consumer electronics and gaming applications.

When the technology was first commercialized there were many problems because consumers could not be sure that products from different vendors would work together. The Wi-Fi Alliance began as a community to solve this issue so as to address the needs of the end user and allow the technology to mature. The Alliance created the branding Wi-Fi CERTIFIED to show consumers that products are interoperable with other products displaying the same branding.

Home Wi-Fi clients come in many shapes and sizes, from stationary PCs to digital cameras. The trend as of 2007 is to incorporate wireless into every electronic where mobility is desired.[citation needed]

Wi-Fi devices in home or consumer-type environments can connect via a broadband Internet connection into a single router which can serve both wired and wireless clients. They can also use ad-hoc mode for client to client connections, and be built into non-computer devices to enable wireless connectivity to the Internet.

Business and industrial Wi-Fi has become ubiquitous as of 2007. In business environments, increasing the number of Wi-Fi access points provides redundancy, support for fast roaming and increase overall network capacity by using more channels or creating smaller cells. Wi-Fi enables wireless voice applications (VoWLAN or WVOIP). Over the years, Wi-Fi implementations have moved toward 'thin' access points, with more of the network intelligence housed in a centralized network appliance, relegating individual Access Points to be simply 'dumb' radios. Outdoor applications may utilize true mesh topologies. As of 2007, Wi-Fi installations can provide a proactive, self-managed network that functions as a security gateway, firewall, DHCP server, intrusion detection system, and a myriad of other features not previously considered relevant to a wireless network.[citation needed]

The most publicly visible use of Wi-Fi is at hotspots, including:

* Free Wi-Fi at venues like Panera Bread, It's a Grind Coffee House, select hotels, and over 100,000 locations in the USA has been growing in popularity. According to a door-to-door survey in San Jose, CA, the number of venues and users is growing fast.[citation needed]
* Paid Wi-Fi at venues like Starbucks, McDonalds, and at hotels. This trend is growing rapidly at venues that require a higher rate of customer churn, such as sit-down restaurants.[citation needed]
* Metropolitan-wide WiFi (Mu-Fi) already has more than 300 projects in process.[3]

what is a decent wireless ip camera?

Eric

I want to get a security camera, just one for now to watch the driveway of my house. I checked Amazon and eBay, there are so many camera I can't tell which is right for me. 420, 525, 36mm, etc I can't tell which one is important.

My problem: for the past few months deliveries from UPS were reported as having delivered (even those required signatures were just left unsigned) and when I checked, the packages are nowhere to be found. I am tired of filing complaint and waiting for replacement. I have no way of knowing if I have a dishonest delivery truck or if someone has been coming in and stealing after UPS leaves. Nothing like a stolen $1,000 camera lens that were supposed to be signed for (but never signed) to make someone at UPS HQ hopping mad.

I would like a camera that is able to use wireless network with WPK2 encryption or a plain wired ('d have to run a cable from router to outside), is outdoor friendly, and can be accessed from computer on network. What I plan is to use software that connects to the camera and record video if there's any movement. But I am open to suggestion as long as I can see the video and it can show what is going on in front of my house.

I do not want one that has overly wide angle, I'd like to see just the drive way from the under eaves of my house, not the whole world. Not too expensive, probably around $50. Two-way audio support is also not needed as I probably won't be at home if a crime occurs at my house. It'd have to be network capable as none of my computer has video capture hardware.

I would prefer the cameras to be wireless and to have a DVR. It would be nice if there was an app I could access the system from my phone. I would probably need at least 12 cameras.

Answer
I like Swann and Lorex systems for these (or smaller) systems.

There may be valu in getting two systems so if one fails, all the cameras are not down - but that is up to you.

Since we do not know the office layout, we do not know how the "wireless" part will work going through walls made of various materials.

Quick review:

Wired security cameras have a single "bundled" cable that contains the video feed and power. There are two plugs at the camera - one for power and one for video. At the DVR there is a connection for the video and the power plug connects to a power source - usually a "wall wart" or some sort. You can locate a battery back-up system at the DVR to power the DVR and the camera in the event of a power outage.

Wireless security cameras send only the video wirelessly. The camera still needs power (wire #1). If battery backup is needed, then some sort of local UPS is needed. The video is transmitted wirelessly to its base station mate. The base station needs power (wire #2). The base station connects with wire (#3) to the DVR.

You will also want to invest in a couple of monitors that connect to the DVR. 16 channels is a lot to watch. For the monitor at the DVR, a low priced, VGA-connected computer monitor is fine. There may be a need to have auxilliary monitors around the rest of the property. Use of the composite video out makes that easy.

Connecting the DVR to the computer network is easy enough - be sure the network is segmented using a network switch (not just a hub) so the video traffic and be isolated from the rest of the network. Use of PnP is easy, but a network admin with half a clue will know how to set the IP address and security properly. Also, for the remote access you want, setting up the router to allow your access while maintaining network security is needed. Again, any half skilled network admin who understands IP networks and router configuration can do this. This works best if your internet provider gives you a static IP address, but can still work if a dynamic address is used - there are some work-arounds and compromises you'll make is you go this route.

I would suggest sizing the system with more ports for cameras than you think you need - in case you decide to add cameras. In this case, two 8-channel systems gives you decent coverage. And a composite security camera will work on any manufacturer's system. I have installed Swann DVRs with Swann, Lorex and other manufacturer's analog, composite video, security cameras...

You did not tell us if the cameras will all be indoors or if there will be any out door (parking lot, alley, etc) in which case you may want outdoor-rated night-vision cameras in addition to the indoor versions.

My friend was recently hit and run in a ralph's parking lot, and we noticed it had security cameras outside. Are they mainly just for the front of the store or do they see some or all of the parking lot? And if they do see the parking lot, can they pick out a license plate?

Answer
You should ask one of the managers at the grocery store.

Do police check parking lot security cameras?

Do police check parking lot security cameras for minor hit and runs? like paint scratches? i read somewhere that police don't check parking lot cameras unless it involves some sort of injury.

Answer
Probably not, but it depends on how busy the police are. If its Chicago PD, they probably won't. If its some small town sheriff without anything else to do, he might.

im looking for a decent 4 channel security system with dvr and at least 2 cameras for around 250 its doesn't have to be the greatest, just get the job done... so any brands or models of the best bang for my buck would be appreciated.

Answer
I found a 4 channel package that comes with 2 cameras a DVR and everything else you need to get up and running for only $375.00. The awesome thing I think about this system is that it is ready to go out of the box so all you have to do is plug it all up and you have a security system.

I know this system is a little more than you wanted to spend but to get a "decent" system you are going to have to spend a little more money. Most standalone DVR systems will cost around $200 then you need compatible cameras which can vary in price from as low as $30 and up plus all the necessary cables.

I hope this helps!
