Questions about home security CCTV systems?

hutchyw117

I live in a terrace house behind a high street of shops and between my house and the shops is a large back alley. Currently there is alot of anti social behaviour going on in the back alley like people setting bins on fire, vandalism and burglary (including my house) just to name a few things! The police and the fire service are always been called out and the people who do these things just get away with it!

I really want to install a CCTV camera on my house pointing into the back alley to see everything that goes on and hopefully catch some people red handed, but I really no nothing about the rules of having CCTV and how to run and record CCTV cameras.

So firstly, am I allowed to put a camera on my house pointing at my back gate and the back alley? Where are the best places to buy cameras? (UK) How do I record what the cameras see?? I have one very slow computer. Could having cameras on my house make my house a target? Anything else you might think will help me??

Thanks!

Answer
I think you should put camera.

I would select network IP camera (because you already have a PC to record video). I have had a good experience with AXIS, and Panasonic IP cameras. Also you can consider Arecont Vision, As an alternative you can install traditional camera with IP Video encoder (like AXIS M7001).

You should find the camera with the right angle of view. Camera lens has a parameter called "focal length". To make a simple modeling you can use a 3D software for CCTV design. Like a demo from JVSG.

Then at last you need a software to record a video. From good ones I recommend LuxRiot, or ICatcher. If you need a budget one use a "Active Webcam". But test the software before purchasing.

The biggest advantage of IP cameras is a possibility to get megapixel resolution. The second advantage is remote monitoring possibility.

outdoor Home surveillance systems?

adam_ricem

where can i find some good ones? how hard are they to install?

Answer
Depends which country you are in:

In USA, try Wal Mart, Circuit City or Radio Shack. Alternatively type in home cctv with your location and you may find a local supplier.

In UK, try our website www.securicorp.com which has a home security section and will give you an idea of which types of surveillance systems you can use. Alternatively try Argos or Maplin.

Our website also features a guide to CCTV Cameras which will help you make a more informed choice. CCTV Cameras can be easy to install if you are supplied plug & play cables. All you would have to do is lay the cable and plug in on both ends. The most difficult job is to drill holes to srcew the cameras to the wall.

Non computer based recording systems such as VCR or DVR are very simple to set up, IP cameras and PC based systems can be troublesome, especially if you are not tech savy.

Be wary of cheap wireless cameras, the quality may not be that good so make sure you can see a wireless camera in action before you buy.

Jobs in Security (Night Guard, Watching Cameras) for a 16 year old?

I know quite a few people who work nights as security for private homes and watching cameras in the night.
They say its the easiest job in the world and half the time they just sleep.
I go to college (in the UK) so I would have to get up early but I regularly don't sleep for days at a time so its not a problem.

Any chance or should I just get a McDonalds job?

Answer
Unlikely that you'd be able to get such a job... Those security jobs are meant to thwart potential problems (the sleeping guards should be fired!) and, theoretically, could place the person in a dangerous situation. Usually, you have to be at least 18 to get such a job.

Sorry - you might want to polish your application for McD's! Or if flipping burgers isn't your thing, see if you can get a cashier and stockboy position in a grocery store.

uk laws regarding outdoor home security cameras?

Mark M

My best mate has been recieving a LOT of grief from his family recently (several cars smashed up/burned, assaulted, chased and generally harangued). No solid evidence can be found so the police cannot do anything.

What I need to know, is what the laws around home security recording equiptment are, and where can I find more information?

More specifically, Can I install a security camera outside the front of the house so that It can see any vehicle (and activity around it) parked on the road outside the front of the house and can the recordings be used as evidence in court?

Answer
You can install a camera anywhere that it isn't looking into a place where other people have a "reasonable expectation of privacy".

Camera on the front of the house looking at the driveway? Perfectly legal.
Camera on a 40' pole in your back yard where it looks down into your neighbours bathroom window? Illegal.

A video recording of people in a public situation is legal evidence in a court case.

Mike. So removing "problem families" from their homes and putting them in a concentration camp is somehow better? Are you joking?

Answer
Wow, if that were actually true, it might just suck. But as a US/ UK dual national it sounded like, well, exactly the kind of BS that only an American Republican would dream up. Enjoy your morning tea bag.

From the article:
"UPDATE: Further research shows that the Express didnât quite have all its facts straight. This scheme is active, and the numbers are fairly accurate (if estimated), but the mentions of actual cameras in peopleâs homes are exaggerated. The truth is that the scheme can take the most troublesome families out of their homes and move them, temporarily, to a neutral, government-run compound. Here they will be under 24-hour supervision. CCTV cameras are not specifically mentioned, not are they denied, but 24-hour âsupervisionâ certainly doesnât rule this out from the camera-loving Brits."

What is the best dog for home protection?

best home security camera uk on ... CCTV Manchester- great service guaranteed Security Camera Installation
best home security camera uk image

BlackDranz

In the UK, must be friendly and minium hair or dirt around the house

Answer
Are you looking for a dog simply to protect your house, or are you looking for a dog primarily as a companion and second as protection?

If it's the former, the best dog for you would be a security alarm and camera.

If it's the latter, any dog that will bark actually tends to be good. Burglars will think twice if they hear a dog at all. I do also agree with the other poster that GSDs (or Alsatians) are quite good. They are a family dog, though they do shed, particularly blowing chunks of coat in the fall and spring. Belgian Shepherds are a similar choice. In fact, any dog is going to leave hair or dirt around the house so again, if that's a serious criteria for you, consider an alarm and camera instead.

If you do end up choosing to get a dog for companionship and protection, be sure that you find an excellent breeder. They should be active in showing, competing, or training their dogs, should focus on only one or at the most two breeds, the pups should be raised in the home, and you should be able to at least meet the mother. The breeder should test for hereditary diseases (particularly hip dysplasia in GSDs) and should be breeding for structurally sound, healthy, and well-tempered dogs.

Your other option would be to check your local rescues and meet a few dogs to decide which one has the best temperament for you.

Whatever you do, don't buy a pup sight unseen from online or from a pet shop. These puppies often come from mass producers (puppy farms or puppy mills) where the parents get little health care or socialization. These sorts of places will not produce the stable temperament or general soundness that you would need in a dog.

What other jobs can you do after being a Security Guard?

Dave

Well im just wondering what other careers or jobs do you think you could do after being a security guard?
This is just me wondering what you could swap a security job for as i think negatively and think that you wont be able to change your job from security guarding. As i think eventually i would like to change my career.

Only UK Answers please and no links to other websites thanks

Answer
I had the same problem - I did SIA work whilst I was in college and I did not like it very much.

A friend of mine set his company up from being a security guard, he is now a security consultant - he advertises as a firm that helps to improve home security, security cameras, locks, alarms, etc. He makes very, very good money!

If you go online and search for "courses for security camera installing" this should give you some idea of what I'm talking about.

ALso, locksmith is also a good home security skill as well, maybe take a look at that as well

How to prevent hooligans & terrorists from hacking into my WiFi network & internet in London?

best home security camera uk on SMALL INTERNAL DUMMY CCTV SURVEILLANCE CAMERA - HAY-2000
best home security camera uk image

Major

I live in an ethnically diverse and racially sensitive suburb outside London which has a history of trouble in big and small doses. Those who remember the hooliganism of the 2011 UK riots will agree.

I also have a self defence establishment in the city of London where I teach people personal protection techniques. This place, as well as my home, have several WiFi connections that record in real time, 24 x 7. Some of these connections are tied to surveillance cameras and other security monitoring systems to detect suspicious activity including break-ins.

Recently, during an audit, I noticed several loopholes and vulnerabilities in my WiFi setup which could be bypassed, allowing access to unauthorized people. Some well-meaning neighbours and concerned community citizens too have complained of intermittent WiFi breaches, attempts at hacking by miscreants and unknown people (that's the tough part -- you never know who's going to target you, and why).

Following the horrendous Woolwich Attack and the deplorable beheading of the young British soldier in May 2013, I'm making a serious effort to ensure protection on all fronts. I can deal with the physical part, it's the technological part that I see as a weak link.

The last thing I need is some religious nut or far-right nationalist (this swings both ways) hacking into my WiFi network and using it for their senseless propaganda.

My question is: How do I beef up my WiFi connection so that it isn't hijacked by anti-socials and/or terrorists for their nefarious deeds? I want to do this the easiest and best possible way.

Answer
Install a military-grade encryption software on all your WiFi-enabled devices (laptop, PC, cell phone tablet). At the same time, do not broadcast your SSID (Service Set Identification). Do this and your wireless connection will become invisible, anonymous.

SSID is what the drive-by WiFi seekers will use to locate your wireless signal or network and sniff out for potential vulnerabilities in your setup.

Some of the vulnerabilities include weak passwords, lack of encryption on your router, etc. Once they find that, it won't take long for them to hijack it. (Trust me, these hackers latch on to your network like marauding leeches.)

Anonymity on a wireless network is the easiest, most effective way to safeguard your private space and your personal internet.

I use it all the time.
