Questions about Trail Cameras?

Taino John

I am considering buying a tail camera for Elk hunting, but I have never dealt with one.

The place I plan to hun this fall is about 2 hours from my house. In a heavily forested area, within the mountains. It's an area that is used for controlled hunting, but is open to use with my general elk tag.

Here are the questions:

How do you keep one from getting stolen?

What would be ideal locations in the forest to mount the camera?

How frequently should I go back to check it? Will once a week be enough?

What national sporting goods stores carry them? I've checked locally and no one here carries them.

What are some good brands that I can look at, while keeping the costs around $200 +/- $30.00.

Thank you!

Answer
If you have $200 I would go all out and buy a Cuddeback. They are the best at trigger-speed. If you don't feel like spending that much buy a Moultrie. I have their D-40 model and it works like a charm.

As far as security goes most camera's have a little ring where you can insert a padlock. I usually padlock mine shut and strap it to the tree with a chain. National sporting goods store such as Bass Pro, and Cabelas carry them for sure.
I usually leave mine out there for about a week, but that is just because I am kinda antsie. How long you leave it out for will depend on how big your sd card is. If you have a 4mp camera with a 2gb sd card, it will be able to take roughly 1800 pictures. How fast these pictures get used up depends on if you have bait out. Some times unwanted animals such as squirrels and birds will come and eat your bait triggering the camera. If you have no bait but still a fair amount of game you could leave it out for around 2.5 - 3 weeks + if you had to. I would not recommend leaving it out for that long though. You may want to buy 2 sd cards so that when one gets full you can just swap the two.
When you set up your camera you should be sure that the area that you are setting it up at has quite a bit of elk traveling frequently there. Look for trails, and fresh tracks, and then set your camera about 5-10' off the trail. Position your camera about 2.5 - 4.5' above the ground. If you want to adjust the angle just put a stick behind it. You want your camera looking down the trail, so that your camera has time to wake up.
Hope that this has helped some, Good Luck scouting!

Have you ever used a trail camera?

I'm looking for some outside security cameras, how well do these cameras work?, and do you have any recommendations?

Answer
I have used a few different brands and models of security cameras and have some that I would recommend. First of all, I recommend staying away from X10 cameras. Although they are inexpensive, the poor quality doesn't make X10's worth buying. X10 cameras also don't operate over a wireless network which is something I prefer.

I feel that wireless network cameras are some of the most secure, high quality and easy to manage options available. Most people already have a wireless network for computer and internet sharing at home, so adding a network camera makes sense.

My first experience with network cameras was with the Panasonic brand. Although the quality was good in day light, the night vision was poor. Within a year the camera had burned out. This was the case for two different models of Panasonic cameras.

Then I finally discovered the Axis brand of network cameras. I have been running several Axis 207w models for more than two years and have not had any hardware issues. They work so well that I almost forget I have them installed. Now these are not necessarily considered outdoor cameras but I have them installed in my window ledges (inside) and they are facing outdoors to monitor sidewalks and door ways. They have very good quality in the daytime and even night images are good with minimal light sources. 30 frames per second video capabilities is very good for a camera in this price range.

The setup on the software side is easy and you are able to view live video over an internet connection using a web browser. It has motion activated functionality and good settings and options for custom surveillance needs. Recorded video can be played back using the included software. I like to watch what happened while I was away on business or vacation. It definitely gives me some piece of mind when I'm not around my house.
