Hello

Check out this link: http://www.ascendentgroup.com/~ascendent/HTML%20E-mail/X4S/x4s.html

You should not pay any monthly fee for your CCTV system just store your images on site.

95% of cameras and DVR will not allow you to view them with the I phone or other smart phones.
And even then you need permission and password.

One of the few manufactures that allow you to do this is Ascendent Technology Group.

The X4S Series is an intelligent, cost-effective CCTV management solution, integrating the latest technology and the most advanced features while maintaining a simple, intuitive and user friendly interface. The X4S Series is a complete 24/7 turn key solution that meets the demanding security needs of todayâs business and home owners.

Key Features:
⢠4CH Real time DVR
⢠Cost effective turn key CCTV solution
⢠True Plug and play operation

⢠H.264 reduces file size to 40% of Mpeg4 and 200% of MPEG2.
⢠USB 2.0 Smart backup automatically includes software on backup medium
⢠HDMI and VGA dispaly
⢠5 year warranty on HDD
⢠Remote connectivity; view and configure DVR from anywhere using Internet Explorer, Firefox or Safari, and I phone (free)

(I phone app provided when you purchase a DVR)

Smart Backup Backup has never been easier or faster once you have found the video by either time or search. Simply input the time and cameras you wish and backup via USB 2.0 drive. When you backup video the playback software is automatically installed on the flash drive eliminating the need for codecs or special programs saving both time and money.

Remote Connectivity The X4S Series has industry-leading remote connectivity allowing you to connect and view all your cameras instantly from anywhere in the world using either PC or MAC platforms. The X4S also allows for remote setup giving installers and integrators the ability to quickly and cost-effectively support their customers with sufficient privileges to do so.

HDMI Display: The X4S Series has an embedded High resolution (Super extended Graphics Array) allowing you to view your cameras on high definition displays such as LCD, DLP and Plasma (up to1600X1200 resolution). This eliminates the stretching, pix-elation and distortion that normally occurs, leaving you with vivid crystal-clear images.

Plug and Play Operation While the features and technology are highly advanced they are designed around a user-friendly graphical interface for simple and quick operation. The AVP Series professional DVR system is now as easy to use as a VCR with search, backup, display and remote connections that are easily set up in less than fifteen minutes from start to finish. Can anyone give me some research tips?

Rebel_Rob

Nothing specific... I've been working on a piece of writing material and I've expanded it. I'm not for sure if I want to write a book or not. But I have many ideas. I just feel overwhelmed with how much research I've have to delve into.

I'm not worried about researching but I'd like some tips. Anything you know would be great. Thank you for your time.
No. True war story---Iraq. I need a lot of details on American, British, Australian, and Italian Govt. & USA Constitutional law, and a lot of technical jibberish with weapons systems, etc...
I've got accounts of over 200 Marines and need ways to organize. Have over 500 files of Iraq war crud, articles, media columns, etc...
Pretty much I have everything on hard copy. I was advised to put everything on memory sticks... or external hd. I'm not really good with computers so now the pressure is stacking..

Answer
That's a pretty broad question. What are you actually asking? Do you want some tips on how to research things? In what subject? And what kind of writing? For a novel, or non-fiction research?

EDIT: Ah, okay - gotcha. Thanks. Interesting project! My first and strongest suggestion would be to get everything into a digital format. That makes it much, much easier to store, search, re-arrange, transmit, copy, etc etc. To get hard copy into document files, you'll likely need 2 stages:

1) Scanning
2) Optical Character Recognition (OCR).

Scanning creates pictures of the page. These images don't actually contain any text; they're just pictures as though you'd photographed the page with a camera. To get the text into a usable form that you can search, edit, etc, you need to run the images through an OCR program. The output can be Microsoft Word files, or plain Text, or PDF, and usually a few other formats.

There are many applications available - most can do the scanning and the OCR stages at the same time, in a single operation. A popular, well-known and well-regarded app is OmniPage, from Nuance:

http://www.nuance.com/for-individuals/by-product/omnipage/index.htm

It's about $150. There are many alternatives, some cheaper. Also depends on whether you are using a Windows PC or a Mac.

Nearly all PCs these days have a search tool, which will let you search across all your files and emails for some word or phrase. So if you think "There was something about Fallujah but I don't remember where it was", you can search for the word 'Fallujah' and find the 3 Word docs and 2 emails where it gets mentioned. I use this feature all the time, very handy! (esp once you get a few thousand emails). On Windows, you'd use Windows Search:

For storing your data, I would recommend using an online service, such as DropBox or Google Drive:

https://www.dropbox.com/
https://drive.google.com/

Even with thousands of pages of documents, photos, maps etc, you won't need more than, say, a few gigabytes of space - which will be free or very cheap. The advantages are:
- the storage provider (DropBox etc) take care of all the backup and stuff for you, you don't need to worry about keeping a backup yourself.
- you can access your files from any machine, anywhere, that has an Internet connection. No danger of forgetting your USB key or external HD.
- pretty good security, password protected, no-one can access your files (probably safer than a external HD which could be stolen from your car etc).
- automatically sync's your data from local PC to the Cloud.
- easy to use
- you can still use a USB key or external drive as well, if you really want to.

The writer's main tool a word processor, obviously - such as Microsoft Word. There are alternatives as well. On Apple Mac, the application called "Scrivener" is a interesting alternative, it is specially designed for writers.

Another useful tool is a Note-taking app. This is a good way to jot down random ideas, record interesting snippets and links, along with photos, web pages etc. Microsoft OneNote is an example which runs on your PC. Or there are also online products, such as EverNote:

www.evernote.com

As for locating information, the all-time Number 1 tool is Google! For example: go to Google.com and type in:

Australia Iraq war RAAF

You will find links to lots of info about the Royal Australian Air Force in Iraq. If you just want to get links from Australian Government sites (for example), use the search string

Australia Iraq war RAAF site:gov.au

This means, "search for these terms but only at websites from the *.gov.au Australian Government domain". Google has a fair bit of online help for search tips:

http://support.google.com/websearch/?hl=en

I could go on for hours more, but I hope this is a useful start for you. Good luck with the project!!
