I already have it streaming on to my desktop in a "live" display but how do I record only when there is motion detected on it? What is the best program out there...free?
Answer
To capture from a CCTV camera you will need a capture card or video server. It would probably be easier to use a IP camera. Here is an article that explains the difference between a CCTV and IP camera, and how to select a security camera: http://www.deskshare.com/resources/articles/wcm_SecurityCamera.aspx

Webcams can do this with a little help from software. Of course a professional or consumer grade DVR is probably better suited for it. Having needed this myself in the past though, and being on a tight budget, with little time to implement. A shareware program and an old webcam is the quick, easy, and cheap solution!
Here are a few links to trials. Of course they have paid versions, and if you like the product and continue to use it, it would certainly be nice to toss the developer a bone. The coder has placed time and energy into making the software.
