A security camera in an office building has 1000 x 1000 pixels. Each pixel shows a grayscale intensity of 1024 levels. The camera takes one image per second. The building has 15 identical cameras with the same specification as described above.

The key info here is "Each pixel shows a grayscale intensity of 1024 levels."
lg(1024) = 10 bits
edit: Sorry Silhouette... here's how it works... Each pixel takes 10 bits therefore
1000 x 1000 x 10 = 10 million bits / 8bits/byte = 1,250,000 bytes
1,250,000 bytes / 1024^2 = about 1.19 MB per picture uncompressed

Is it illegal to record audio in the office using security cameras (with built-in microphones)?

I am in California and I am in charge of putting up security cameras in the office.
Answer
As long as the employee manual states that all communications and actions in the offices are SUBJECT to recording, that proves as warning enough.
Employers absolutely have the "right" to make sure their employees are working, not stealing corporate assets/services and to protect them company from an employees actions concerning outside forces.
