any comments on this story? It's for a contest for my middle school.
The topic of the end is broad. There's been a lot of predictions about it. It also raised a lot of questions. Many sci-fi books and movies had been made about the end of existence, describing earthquakes, tsunamis, and dark skies in astonishing detail, but the real thing is far from what anyone imagined. In a few weeks, all the questions will be answered. Since it's been announced this horrible truth filled the minds of about everyone alive.
Some of the strongest people became suicidal in fear of being sucked into the unknown. The churches sent everybody out as a missionary all over the world and across their town holding signs and reading the entire book of Revelations to anyone close enough to hear. Yet, some people skeptically continue on with their every day lives with just a tiny trace of fear on their faces, because the proof is in the patch of distorted stars in the sky.
It was first announced last week, capturing the attention of the whole world. This was no hoax. The proof is laying out there plain and clear. Life has been on this earth two billion years. 2012 was the predicted end. Maybe we don't really have that long left. Maybe it's too late already to extend the great expiration date.
The dim moonlight made Amber look pale and ghostly as she stared at the patch of distorted stars in the sky. The black hole she knew was there looked impassive and unyielding, mocking the once almighty sun in the distance. She thought about what the end would be like.
People would be screaming, running, and finally, gasping for air. Dust and feathers would be flying everywhere. Light things would float up. Then heavier objects, and finally, the corpses. Everything, including cats, dogs, mice, fish, and people would drift up, with solemn expressions from another world. The heavier things would follow, with the same single-minded determination. Up, and up, swirling and spinning and twisting. The stars would look super bright, almost like supernovas. Her beautiful home would look super bright from outer space. Then she would experience the devastating effects of spaghettification, if, lets say, she wasn't already dead. She'd be ripped to atoms feet first, followed by her legs. Her last glimpse of the world would be of the mountains cracking into bits and of the hot magma spilling out, followed by the Earth's core, and the world would end.
So what exactly is a black hole? It would be a region of space having such an intense gravitational field that nothing can escape. Basically, it forms when a star at least three times as big as our sun turns supernova and the core implodes while the outer layer explodes, and boom, you've got a baby black hole.
At that moment, a few insects glowing eerie green light flew to Amber. To her amazement, they had four segments.
The insects moved to the door in their same positions in the rigid formation. Out of curiosity Amber slipped on an overcoat and opened the door, walking out with them. She followed them across the street and woods until she met a deserted lab. It was big, with lots of glass windows. The insects flew to the forth floor and waited outside the window for her to climb up and break the glass. There were plenty of grooves to cling to. She broke the window and climbed in to face an old security camera. Stepping past it, she noticed a tall steel door. The scientists and workers ran away at the news so fast the key was thrown on the floor. Opening it revealed a glass room with a glass wall disallowing entry. The room was tightly packed with the same tiny insects. The glass was labeled "Caelibestiola Quadpartitio"ï¼ meaning space bug with four sections, in Latin. She took a chair from the room and shattered the glass. The swarm immediately flew out the window, looking like a scene from a sci-fi movie, and a few dead bugs lay on the floor unmoving.
Amber looked at some of the files for the insect. Wonderous. This swarm was found floating around in space in between galaxies and around the universe. Scientists captured them for investigation. They were expected to die in earth's atmosphere but was found to be tolerant of a wide range of temperatures and different atmospheres. She looked up from the files and saw the black whole, invisible because light cannot escape, is now bright green. Slowly, the patch of distorted stars shrank, disdistorting the stars behind it. There was a bright flashing light, and it was gone. Finally, all that is left is the green, which seemed to dissolve into space a few minutes after.
The light still left it's print on Amber's retina even an hour after the incident
That was the strangest thing that happened since Pangaea, the massive super-continent, was broken up by tectonic plates. Maybe this wasn't the end of the world. Amber had a feeling this had something to do with the insects. But there were not enough to tackle the hole. Amber took the files she brought home from the lab and saw on the page in bold "<font;_bold>three hundred captured of about one hundred million found</font>". Probably they called the others to help. That's why the black hole turned green. The bugs glowed green. She looked up "black hole" on Wikipedia. There was an article on how it could evaporate. It said Black holes could emit a thermal spectrum of radiation. This effect is known as Hawking Radiation, based on the the theory by Stephen Hawking. And the light came from the hole completely evaporating, with the luminosity of 200 times the sun, which is already blinding to look at. But what caused the evaporation of a hole that big so fast? She looked at the sky, and kne

i don't usually like these kind of stories but you really hooked me in which is a really good achievement. I mean I actually learnt a few things that my science teacher had been trying to teach but failing and through the story you nailed it. Well done. I think the additional details weren't needed as it left it up to the readers imagination but once again really good job.

Just got a DBA, Do I have to file taxes?
Chelsea
Hi! So recently I got a DBA for my photography business. I've had now 20 clients in 2 months, so I figured it was about time I got one. I plan on writing off on expenses my camera, props, film etc. so I probably won't technically make money this year. Do I still have to file taxes even if I'm 'in the red'? Thanks!
