What is the best way to use an iPad while travelling?

Wanderer

I'm going to Europe and have always been a PC user. I now have an iPad and don't want to lug my bulky HP laptop around Europe just to be able to download pictures and videos like I'm used to, so I'm bringing the iPad and leaving the laptop at home. Now I'm having the issue of what apps to download. I use Picasa to edit pictures and Windows moviemaker to edit movies for YouTube. I am wondering what the best options are for picture editing and movie making from an iPad. I have the SD card reader for the iPad so getting the pictures on the iPad isn't an issue. I just have no clue what to use to edit them and how I can still make high-quality videos for YouTube, Facebook, Blogging, etc...

Help?? :)

Answer
First of all, I would get a security (anonymity) app for private browsing and tracking-free iPad security. This is important if you'll be using your iPad on public WiFi connections in Europe:

For video editing on the iPad, I recommend the "Magisto" app. It's availabe on iTunes. For photos and editing, there's:
- Photo Editor by Aviary
- GroupShot
- Panorama 360 Camera
- Photo Soft Box Symbols HD

To create your own travel blog, there are two iPad apps -- TravelPod and Travelog.

iPad security for children - What precautions can I take both for myself and the children?

Also, is there a security app I can install for online security and email privacy?

Answer
Other than having separate email accounts for yourself and your children (if they are old enough to have one), there are a couple things you can do regarding iPad security.

Firstly, if you want to selectively share your iPad itself with your children then use the iPad's "Restrictions" feature to temporarily disable apps that you do not want shared. You can find this under Settings > General > Restrictions, and also set a 4-digit passcode for it. This lets you set restrictions for communications-centric apps like Safari, iTunes, YouTube, Camera, FaceTime and Ping.

Other than app restrictions, you can also have online restrictions in the form of data privacy & Internet encryption. This keeps your IP address anonymous and your children's browsing activities un-trackable by online services.

For this, I use an app called HidePad on my own iPad. It's a great little security application for children and parents alike, specially on a shared iPad.
