Answer
Just because a security camera is wireless doe not mean it is an IP ir wifi camera.

For example:
http://www.frys.com/product/6778605
Is a "wireless" camera that transmits video (not using wifi) to the base station; the base station plugs into a computer network capable DVR like
http://www.frys.com/product/7168062
This way, you get to the DVR over a computer network - the DVR records the video.

BUT, please understand that "wireless" systems are not all wireless. Here's why:

The camera needs power. Wire #1.
The Base station needs a wire to the DVR for the video. Wire #2.
The Base station needs power. Wire #3.
The only thing wireless about the wireless camera is the wireless video transmission.

Also, your first statement is a bit confusing. You want to access the camera using your computer - which means a computer network (usually IP based), but you don't want an IP camera. If the camera is no using IP then it needs to connect to something - in the example I provided, the DVR provides the connection to the IP network.

If you read through the DVR description, you will see that Windows connectivity to the DVR is possible. Smartphone access is also possible byt downloading the client to your phone.

Keep in mind, if you go the IP camera route, where do you plan for the video to be stored? Computer storage can be expensive. A DVR is designed to be on 24/7 recording away...

Need help buying an IP security camera for home?

I am looking at buying 2-3 IP outdoor cameras which will passively upload images to the internet. I am away from home a lot and I want something which will take pictures either when it detects movement, or takes pictures intermittently(preferably). I have a router for internet access which I want the cameras to connect wirelessly. Will I just need the cameras or is there something else I will need? And if you have any recommendations on cameras that would be great.

Thanks.

Answer
you can buy these cameras in China, there are many IP camera manufactures, you can buy 1.3 MP bullet IP cameras with IR lights, so you can see the video clearly at night, check this one:
